The design focus for this North London Victorian terrace home design project designed by Charles Tashima Architecture was the refurbishment and reconfiguration of the ground floor together with additional space of a new side-return. Photography by Oliver Perrott.
.
“Orienting and organising the interior architecture to maximise sunlight during the course of the day was one of our primary challenges solved.
While the front of the house faces south-southeast with wonderful direct morning light, the rear garden faces northwest, consequently less light for most of the day.
At the encouragement and inspiration of our famous client, we made the somewhat counter-intuitive decision of relocating the kitchen to the smallest room at the back of the terrace house, rather than in the larger room extension in the garden.
This move had advantages. The kitchen gained the strategic position to serve both the garden living area to the back and breakfast room at the front. It’s important to note that the living and family dining areas are set (about 7 steps) lower than the main ground floor of the house.
In order to improve the connection and flow of the two levels, we designed a stair with a generous half landing – a space between. Just above this landing, we introduced a glazed cube for light as well as head-height. The stair is made of reclaimed oak, blackened steel and polished brass handrail.
To improve the use and volume of light within the existing extension, we added a number of windows and skylights in addition to a side return and window seat, projecting into the garden with a direct view of a beautiful magnolia tree. In the late afternoon, there is a brief period when light cuts across the house on the garden side and light does have a moment of direct engagement.
As to the character of the rooms, our client asked for an eclectic approach, using a rich variety of materials – including reclaimed flooring, concrete worktop, Moroccan cement tiles, coloured glass and steel windows – to work together with a variety of colours and rich array of their furniture.
We sought to create atmospheric and warm spaces with bespoke joinery. It was important that the room had the dual feel of being a place to read the newspaper and have breakfast, while having the warmth and comfort of surrounding books and photographs.”

How to Organize an Unforgettable All-Girls Trip in London
According to MasterCard, London is the second most visited city in the world. Every year, the city attracts almost 19.8 million visitors. People who come here enjoy doing the usual things such as taking a picture of Big Ben, checking out the Buckingham Palace and enjoying a fantastic view of the city via the London Eye.
Exploring like the rest of the visitors would be the best option, especially if it’s your first time in London. However, if you want to make your trip more memorable, you should try and deviate from the usual travel plan. For example, why not try to include more peculiar activities to your schedule.
No idea what sort of weird but fun things you can do in London? The article below has all the details you need to know about the unusual
#1. Find the Soho water pump
In the late 18th century, around 10,000 people died from Cholera. A physician named John Snow found out that the disease was caused by the contaminated water coming from the Soho water pump. To save the people, he had the pump handle removed. Thanks to his efforts, the cholera outbreak stopped. He was able to save the lives of many Brits.
To find the ever famous Soho water pump, you have to be extra attentive. It’s a small black water pump located somewhere in the Soho district. Aside from checking the pumps, don’t forget to visit the pub nearby. They serve all kinds of alcoholic beverages and snacks. You can relax in the pub before you proceed to your next stop.
#2. Enjoy drinking coffee in a refurbished Victorian toilet
Have you ever seen an old Victorian washroom? Have you ever tried drinking coffee inside one? The Attendant Cafe in Fitzrovia is the best place to go to if you’re tired of going to an old-school cafe.
The cafe is built inside an old Victorian toilet. It’s quite easy to find this cafe because of it’s unique iron fencing.
The entrance looks so authentic that some people easily mistook it as a real Victorian washroom. Once you find it, you should follow the staircase until you get inside the quirky coffee shop.
Besides drinking their freshly brewed coffee, make sure to try their brownies, protein balls as well as banana bread. Their frequent customers highly recommend their baked treats.
#3. Check out the Clown Museum
Are you a fan of Pennywise? How about Justin Fletcher? If you don’t feel any slight discomfort when you see clowns, you can head over to London’s Clown Museum.
It has the most extensive collection of clown-related artefacts such as make-up, costumes, and props. Most of the items here came from renowned British clowns.
The museum was established back in 1946 as a project of the International Circus Clowns Club. The members of the club used to meet in St. Joseph Church but then chose to relocate at the Holy Trinity Church.
A few years later, someone started posting paintings and pictures of members in a small room behind the Holy Trinity Church. This prompted the organisation to create a museum to tell the story of their craft.
#4. Visit the house of a famous English architect
Sir John Soane is one of the most celebrated architects in England thanks to his masterpieces such as the old building of the Bank of England. He also designed countless halls and church extensions. Learn more about this gifted man by visiting his home.
His house has been transformed into a quaint museum to show off his drawings, building models and other crafts. You can tour around his house and learn about his story free of charge.
#5. Show off your artsy side during a drawing session
Ever tried joining a life drawing party? It’s that cheeky and modern hen party activity that many brides-to-be include in their hen celebration. In London, you can readily hire a professional model to pose nude while you and your friends try your best to draw.
If you coordinate with a good party vendor, you will even get free art materials and props for the drawing session.
Regardless if you’re coming to London to celebrate your own bachelorette party or try something unique and exciting, then availing a life drawing package may be a great option for you.
#6. Marvel at the century-old subterranean railway system
London has been around for at least 2,000 years. That’s why you can find plenty of old buildings with a Neoclassical, Gothic, Baroque or Romanesque design. Among the fascinating buildings you should check out in London is the Postal Museum.
The UK postal service has started opening its door to the public back in the 16th century. The building comes with an underground railway system to deliver mail back in the early days. Today, the railway is no longer operational, but it’s open to the public for tour purposes.
Check out the old tunnel system and learn their story by booking a guided tour with the Postal Museum.
#7. Enjoy kayaking along the Thames
Thames is one of the most iconic bodies of water in the UK. Kayaking is the best way for you to enjoy viewing the river and the districts, towns and cities that it traverses. Nowadays, you can easily find a kayaking tour company that can cater to your needs. They can provide you with basic training in paddling. They will also give you instructions on how to keep safe while you kayak along the river.
If you’re an experienced kayaker, taking the tidal section is recommended. It will give you the adrenaline-pumping action that you need.
#8. Take pictures in front of the most amazing street murals
When you visit London, you will immediately notice all the beautiful and eclectic street murals. The art community, as well as the locals and the UK government, are warmly embracing graffiti as a form of art.
As long as the artist secures a permit to paint the murals, he/she can create the art without getting reprimanded. If you wish to see some of the craziest murals, you can check out Beers & Buns, Brick Lane market and Parkland Walk.
If you’re too lazy to find street murals on your own, you can book a guided mural tour. There are several companies that specialise in this field such as Free Foot by Tours.
#9. Feast your eyes on the best neon lights junkyard
Do you love neon lights – especially the vintage types? Make sure to drop by God’s Own Junkyard. It’s a small shop filled with all sorts of lighting fixtures, vintage signs and a wide range of other pre-loved neon lights products. If you also want to get customised neon signage, you can also go to this junkyard. They can create the signage you need for a reasonable price.
#10. Sip the finest cup of tea at the Twinings Café
Last on our list of travel to do list is enjoying a cup of freshly brewed tea. While it doesn’t really sound weird or quirky, it’s definitely an activity that you should not miss to include in your travel itinerary.
Britons absolutely love drinking tea. And for good reason! Tea provides a lot of health benefits.
According to surveys, On average, Brits spend about $20,000 on tea on their entire lifetime. Among the famous tea brands in the UK is Twinings.
Instead of buying a regular Twinings tea bag, you should try drinking it straight from their cafe. Aside from enjoying tea, you can also enjoy choosing from a wide array of flavours and even treat yourself to a decadent baked treat.
Love the tips and tricks we shared above? Which ones are your favourite so far and which activities would you include to your own travel plan? We hope you have a good time when you visit London!

Hoxton House, East London
Hoxton House, East London Home, Building Renovation Images, Residential Architecture Project
Hoxton House in East London
26 Jan 2021
Hoxton House
Design: Bradley Van Der Straeten
Location: East London, UK
This Hoxton Terrace House received a colourful, full interior refurbishment. For a client who is a Barbican enthusiast, the palette was able to be strong and eclectic. Beautiful existing features of the building were celebrated, like the exposed steel beams and the old basketball court floors.
With an already open plan kitchen, the existing layout didn’t meet regulations – the challenge was to keep the open functionality and feel while bringing it up to current requirements. Fire rated glazed doors were incorporated on the ground floor to retain visual connections but also contain the kitchen acoustically and for fire separation.
Upstairs, the colour continues with the bedrooms and bathrooms using block colour and simple tiling to make a colourful statement.
What was the brief? A full renovation of a three storey Victorian terraced house. Create an improved open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area whilst meeting the fire regulations. The existing property had a kitchen/dining area that was not meet the current fire safety standards. Create an en-suite bathroom for the first floor bedroom. Improve the daylight intake in the lounge area. Improve connection to the courtyard with large sliding doors. Creating fun spaces.
What were the key challenges? Compactness of all spaces. The existing property had no hallway from the front door to the stairs up to the upper floors, something that doesn’t meet fire regulations. The challenge was to keep that open plan feel whilst meeting the fire regulations.
What were the solutions? A glazed set of steel fire rated doors provide the open plan feel with the hallway, whilst meeting the current fire regulations. A new set of aluminium doors give out to the newly paved courtyard. A walk on rooflight was inserted in the roof of the existing ground floor extension, letting in more light, whilst not compromising on the practicality of the first floor terrace from the rear bedroom. Insertion of a small but colourful mint bathroom on the first floor. Remodeling the family bathroom that housed not only a separate shower and bath, but also a stacked washer/dryer and new boiler above the hidden cistern of the toilet. This same bathroom was injected with bold pink and peach tiles making it very striking as soon as you walk in through the door. Reinterpretation of the typical Victorian dado-rail across the rooms with painted datum lines set out at different heights to inject interest and colour in both bedrooms. Design with light fittings in mind. The Flos String light is a very architectural fitting, allowing the designer to work with the cable in an interesting way.
How is the project unique? The eclecticism of the material choices. Colourful design with simple ideas and tiles. Being bold with colour and persevere with the execution of the design concept from initial sketch to construction. Curation of upcycled pieces of furniture with new fixtures and fittings creating a very personal and unique feel of space.
Who are the clients and what’s interesting about them? Wants to be as anonymous as possible.

11 July 2020 Peter Morris’s Camden Cloud House Approval
The Cloud House is the vision of architect Peter Morris and TV producer Emily Kennedy. This extraordinary fantastical architecture has been approved for small back street in Gospel Oak.
Peter and Emily have applied for permission to demolish their Victorian home in Vicar’s Road and replace it with two houses.
It is an interesting street, very eclectic, and not in a conservation area.
The couple had initially considered remodelling their homewhich dates from around 1880.
It does not function well, suffering from being damp, draughty and extremely difficult to heat.
The Cloud House will incorporate the current building by recycling its bricks to create a herringbone patterned floor.
