Amplifyre: Diversity & Inclusion in the Tech Industry| AskTheHub
As companies strive to add diversity and inclusion to their core values, how can the tech industry contribute? This week David had a chat with Heike Gramkow, the CEO of our #AmplifyreHub partner, auticon GmbH, about #neurodiversity and inclusion in the tech industry. Check it out! Do you have any questions for auticon about #diversity and #inclusion? Leave us a comment below, and we are happy to answer! #AskTheHub is the series where we take questions from the community about business, technology, and product development topics, and talk to one of our partner companies who specializes in the topic.
David: Welcome to a new episode of AskTheHub the series where we work with experts
from the Amplifyre hub about technology, business and product development topics. Today,
We have Heike Gramkow the managing director of Auticon and the topic is, “Inclusion and diversity in tech companies.” Hello Heike, how are you?
Heike: Hello, yes thank you very much for the invitation to the interview today.
David: I am glad you found the time, so the first question would be what is Auticon about and what kind of company it is?
Heike: Yes Auticon is a IT service provider like so many others on the market of course but specialty the unique thing we do have is all of our consultants are in the Autism Spectrum
David: So how long has the company been around and where is it based?
Heike: Yes so we are now actually already in the tenth year, we founded the Auticon in Berlin are then expanded to every major city in Germany in and went abroad a few years ago ,so we are in Switzerland, we are in England, we are in France, we are in Italy, we are in USA, we are Canada and even in Australia
David: Okay, so it has already grown very strongly, but it all started in Berlin you say?
Heike: Yes Exactly, the start was in Berlin. Then we moved to all big cities because autistic people are people of habit that means they don't travel, that's just that a bit different from other service providers therefore we have branches in every big city in Germany.
David: Where did the idea for Auticon come from?
Heike: Yes our founder Dirk Mueller Remus himself has an autistic son in range. Drik dealt with the topic a lot and inquired in groups and noticed that quite a lot of autistic people, even very gifted people were unemployed ,in early retirement or had never worked.
and then we founded and we are the only company in Germany that does that in this environment
David: Exciting so when I say as a company, okay I want to have inclusion and diversity, first of all what would you say are the benefits of it, why should i think about it, think about having inclusion and diversity in the company. Especially in relation to autism?
Heike: Of Course i can only deal with the topic, there are, of course, very, very many
advantages that our colleagues have, they have any special interest i said and there you have it you can also use very deep know-how nobody pretends there either. They are very precise, they are very structured, they are very quick in what they do, but of course only works because we precisely design the workplace in such a way that they can just survive to 100%.
David: Okay that means you provide the framework around them. Tell us a little more about this framework
Heike: So in addition to our consultants, we have educators in our consultants, the so-called job coaches and we have project manager, the job coaches precisely have the task of the customer to crawl up on the subject of autism that can enter on the part of that is there start project that means, for example it can be that a colleague doesn't like, if you shake hands with him, because he feels physical pain with this as a result. It is important that we prepare a proper work environment for autistic people. For Example Autistic People does not like to sit with their back to the door, because they are always distracted when someone passes by because they don't know where are they being addressed or whether they are requested and so precisely we make sure that the workplace is perfect for our people of course that the company is simply briefed in general on the subject of autism, of course we don't just want to find, right projects for our colleagues, we want the topic autism simply as what is perfectly normal, spread in Germany and for it we stand up and we fight for it every day
David: I saw the slogan on the site. I believe the slogan is “Autism is not system failure but just a different operating system. That shows a very nice approach that you have on the subject. My last question would be, what trends are you currently seeing in labor market or you see that the job market changes when it is when it comes to inclusion and diversity, this has changed over the past few years changed or is it exactly the same as before ten years
Heike: No, it has changed extremely. So I think the fears are no longer there, since you notice now inclusion officers in every large company. That Everyone, diversity lives, gender lives everything that goes with it so that has become more open and we are happy about that
David: of course very much that there are more colors company and new approaches new way of thinking that you might not have otherwise
Heike: Exactly.
David: Thank you so much for yours time for this interview
Heike: It was all my pleasure
David: And for the audience out there if you guys have questions about inclusion and diversity or about Auticon in general, then please let us know in the comments section and
we will be happy to answer
See you next time!

Amplifyre: Developing Apps in a Modern PaaS Solution| AskTheHub
Do you know what is a PaaS solution? Do you want to learn how it affects software development? Then check out our latest #AskTheHub interview. This week David had a chat with Jonas Kröger, the Lead Solutions Architect at Platform.sh, about PaaS solutions and the benefits it provides to software development. Do you have any questions to @Platform.sh about #PaaS or #softwarearchitecture? Leave us a comment below and we are happy to answer! #AskTheHub is the series where we take questions from the community about business, technology, and product development topics, and talk to one of our partner companies who specializes in the topic.
David: Welcome to another episode of AskTheHub. The series will take questions from the community on business technology and product development and talk with the experts in the fields From the Amplifyre Hub today, we have Jonas, The lead Solutions architect of Platform.Sh. And the topic is when and why to develop your apps on a modern PAAS solution. Hi Jonas, how are you doing?
Jonas: I'm fine. How are you?
David: I'm doing good as well. And thank you very much for taking the time for the chat today.
Jonas: Pleasure to be here
David: Before we dive into the topic. Let's talk a little bit about Platform.Sh. What is this company about?
Jonas: So Platform.Sh wants our customers to focus on what matters the most, we want them to thrive, we don't want them to think about you much about infrastructure. We want to facilitate a collaboration between between teams and developers, especially building
experiences on the web. That can be a single website, that can be a large fleet of different websites. That doesn't really matter. We want to have the platform that facilitates all that and just abstracts infrastructure away from them under the hood. We are a remote company. So we've been founded around 2010. The product is actually a little bit older, even as a remote company from the beginning. So, even before the pandemic, we were working from all kinds of different places around the world. Right now we are 250 employees, and we have clients like UNICEF, University of Missouri, Cambridge, audio or mentors that trust and host their websites on our solution.
David: For the people out there, who are not so technical, They might know SAAS, Right? SAAS is likely the most commonly known one. But then there's also PAAS and IAAS, Yes. So, for these people could you explain a little bit. What is meant by the PAAS solution?
Jonas: When we talk about infrastructure for web applications, There are a lot of different options, Of course, on the market. Traditionally, even before infrastructure as a service or IAAS People would need on-premise infrastructure on-premise needs either their own data center or a renting space in a data center from someone else, but actually buying hardware, bringing in cables and everything infrastructure as a service like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud platform. But they provide basically an abstraction layer on top of that.
So instead of bringing physical hardware to the place, you can use Virtual computers in the
end. So you still get a computer from them. And you still have to do a lot of stuff on that computer, installing an operating system, making all the configuration, everything. But you don't need to worry about a disc that's erroring out, or something like that. You don't have to exchange that physically. Someone else's doing that for you, and on top of infrastructure providers infrastructure as a service providers, we as Platform.Sh being a platform as a service provider, we go even further in terms of the abstraction level don't need to worry about operating system updates about back up your data about the tiny little details That is, all the infrastructure sector configuration that you would need. And then you have software as a service provider where you don't have the flexibility to run your customers software, right? You need to be lying on what they provide and the options they give you on a PAAS. You can actually bring your own system and host it and have access to the data and have access to the source code and make changes to it, Whereas on the SAAS You probably don't have that possibility. So it's really about flexibility, abstraction, and not needing to worry about specifics.
David: Would you say, these are the reasons why I should use the paas? I mean, when we talk about this, the general question is, is this right for me or not? Is it then about the flexibility, or is there some other reason to own it?
Jonas: First of all, when running infrastructure is actually hard, I mean, there's a reason why there are so many companies who are specialized in that field. So it requires work, it requires people, it requires a lot of skills these days. Like I said, it's not getting less complex. and so complexity is a huge part of the topic and part of the decision. And the other one is, as you said, of course, flexibility and as well as agility. So I talked about collaboration and quick feedback in the beginning. For example, this is something that if it's integrated in your day-to-day workflow, and it is very flexible and not relying on a very static process, It actually makes you go faster. It brings you faster to the Market. And at the same time, you have the Ability to bring in people as needed, and don't need to worry too much about setting up everything. Let me tell you quickly how that works on Platform.Sh. So you get an idea of what this feels like in an actual project. Let's say you want to have a new website, or a new E-commerce system, or any kind of web application, and want to run it the way it works on Platform.Sh. You would just click and create a new project, Maybe even based on one of our templates. So you could start with a Drupal website already, and then make changes according to your specific needs. At some point You would bring that website live and receive traffic, get orders on your store. For example, Stuff like that. And then this is not a static site, Right? It lives. It is, there's changes. You want to improve your checkout process. The marketing department is requesting other features changes to the website. So the development team can go ahead and work on those features. But they don't have to work on them in a completely separated world. They would just create a new git branch. everything on Platform.Sh is actually based on git. So you create a new git branch in every git branch and it can be its own environment. Environment means basically, you get back a domain. A URL where you can make any changes, so you can push your new source code to it. Make changes, and you can send that to anybody involved stakeholders like QA teams, your product owner, or even customers, asking them for their feedback on the feature. And then you can integrate that feedback, Make a change, and tell them to check the site again, since it's a completely separate environment. You have all the features to do whatever you need to do. You can modify data. You don't need to worry about your production system, because that's still running. And at the same time, you can just share that domain. Right? So it's very fast to iterate over any changes. And then when you're done, you get the feedback. And you want to deploy that to your production set. That's also easy. And the production system makes sure it scales, together with the receiving growth that you have.
David: Let's say, I want a new feature that I would like to do. And I would like to see it fast and easy. What is the outcome? I want to compare different versions of its right And traditional development setting. This is, well, quite a cumbersome operation, or takes time. And here with Platform.Sh, when should I think about changing to a PAAS solution?
Jonas: What we see in our customers is actually a wide variety of different types, right?
We have large scale corporations that look for a The solution where they can host all the different kinds of projects, even different architectures, different text, and have a platform that is secure, compliant, easy to use for everybody, not only internally, but also external people like agencies, while at the same time being future-proof, right?
If you want to switch Technologies tomorrow, and we'll use a different content management
system, you don't want to be locked into anything. And then we have small teams who just don't have the luxury to have a devops team that is available twenty four seven. We have agencies that just want to focus on delivering great experiences and improving their Core Business for their customers, and want to make sure the money that they're spending is actually spent on the right place. We also have Freelancers who just want to have a easy and stable and modern solution that they can rely on without having to deal with anything related to infrastructure. So you can see that there's a lot of different use cases. And I think this is what you should expect from a modern PAAS these days. It should abstract all the infrastructure and make you less worried. But at the same time, you should have a lot of flexibility How it's used, how its integrated and what you actually bring to host.
David: So thank you. Jonas, for telling us about PAAS Solutions And when and why we should use them
Jonas: My pleasure, great to be here.
David: For the viewers out there If you have any questions on Platform.Sh, or on PAAS solutions in general, please leave them down in the comments. We are happy to answer them.
See you next time.!

Amplifyre: The Benefits of International Teams | AskTheHub
Having a global team can bring a lot of value to a business. Want to find out how exactly? That’s the theme of our latest #AskTheHub video! Check out the talk David had with Yannick from Jobbatical - our relocation expert partners. Do you have a topic you want for our next #AskTheHub videos? Leave us a comment below! #AskTheHub is the series where we take questions from the community about #business and #technology topics and talk to one of our partner companies who specializes in the topic.
David: Welcome to another edition of AskTheHub. In this series we take questions on business technology and product development and talk with experts in the field from the Amplifyre Hub. Today, We have Yannick Kwik, the head of growth of Jobbatical and the topic is managing International Teams. Hi Yannick, how are you doing?
Yannick: Hi, David, I'm very good. Thanks. How are you?
David: I'm doing great as well. Thank you for taking the time.
Yannick: Thank you for inviting me
David: My pleasure. Cool. So let's start off. The first question would be, what is Jobbatical about? Tell me a little bit about the company.
Yannick: In Jobbatical, we help companies to hire the best talent, regardless of where they're from. Basically, we make immigration and relocation easy through technology, but also through our Immigration and Global Mobility experts. So on the one hand we offer tech enabled services. And on the other hand, the Standalone software that really helps companies and agencies around the world and saves a lot of time by automating the immigration process.
David: What would you say are the benefits of having an international team?
Yannick: I think the benefits are so big and in so many ways. First thing, I would say, to be honest, is just the possibility of having the best team members In your team. So the best talent, regardless of what stamp they have in their passport, in most of the occasions, you don't have the best talent just around the corner and so you can either just get what you have locally and be okay with it in might work for you, or you can have a possibility of really bringing the best talent and form a international team. And I think it's really good also in terms of diversity, that having people that have different cultural backgrounds who think in different ways can bring a lot of positive things to the table and that can take us to creative thinking and Innovation, which I think is crucial for management and for decision taking and for being on top of the game.
David: Yeah, I mean, when it comes to the diversity aspect, this is definitely something that I can also relate to . At Amplifyre We have more nationalities than people in the company, because, you know, several people have even several nationalities. They, you know, have been born in one country, have been living in another country, then living again in another country, and it really makes a difference. You know, it really makes a difference in the way of thinking and the way of dealing with different topics. So on one side, we have all these benefits that people talk about.
Do you also see challenges when somebody is hired in the national team. Might there also be difficulties that somebody can encounter?
Yannick: Correct? Yeah, The same way in an international team can bring diversity and can bring different ways of thinking for creativity. These different ways of thinking can become a challenge if we don't do some work to help our players understand that we have different cultures involved, that they may think differently, they may act differently. It happens the same. That's just an example when you say, how are you to someone from the north? I work a lot with people from Estonia astrobotically located in Estonia. They are going to tell you really how they're feeling. So as a Spanish person, you might get the impression that they're very straight. And I actually didn't really want to know how bad you were today.I just wanted to ask a soft opening question. In Spain we’d say, eah, we're super good. Thank you. And maybe you are just crying inside. So what's a very little anecdotal difference? But really, that can bring challenges on ways to ask for things on ways to get feedback, so that there's some work that needs to be done on that. But other than that, I think in general, the balance has a much more positive side of things.
David: Nowadays, many companies are also working remotely. At Amplifyre it is something that we are doing a lot right now. Very few people are at the office and other situations where one is better or the other is better. What do you say for companies that are thinking about different options here? What should they do?
Yannick: Think what really needs to be considered is what works best for your business and what works best for your employees. Some employees are extremely happy with being remote and have that Accessibility. Some others really would love to be relocated because they get a visa, and perhaps they're living in some country, and they have the possibility of getting a visa to live in a different country that is really appealing to them and to their lifestyle. So that is a benefit, you bring into the talent. Some companies actually have a hybrid set up where they have some people that are physically in the office. Some of them relocated, some of them are local hires. And some people that work remotely even in the same country are remotely somewhere else. And you need to consider time differences as well. Do you really want to have people working in different time differences or not? If you have a town hall meeting with all the companies, What time do you do it? If you have people working in India and Australia in LA or Mexico or in Germany? So what is the best time to make it somehow reasonable for everyone to be online? So there's several things you need to consider, but I wouldn't be afraid of different setups and seeing what works best for you for the business and for your employees.
David: Yeah. Thanks a lot for your insights. And thank you for the interview.
Yannick: Thank you David, it was my pleasure. Thanks for inviting me was very nice chatting with you
David: Yeah and for me as well. And for the viewers out there, if you have other questions when it comes to managing international Teams or to Jobbatical, please leave them down here in the comments, and we are happy to answer them. See you next time.
