Started rewatching Amphibia and the attention to detail and continuity in this show is incredible. The very first episode has a quick Mayor Toadstool campaign moment to introduce his character. Then Anne Theft Auto has multiple Toadstool campaign signs casually appearing in the background, setting up for his campaign to be his motivation for working with Anne in Breakout Star, which is the very next episode. There, Toadstool says that the election is coming up next month and that he embezzles, which becomes a major plot point later in Toad Tax. All this building towards the race between him and Hop Pop in Hop-Popular, which in turn sets up for Toad Tower’s crackdown at the end of the season.
Breakout Star also features a throw away line about the Plantars being broke, which becomes the climax of Girl Time, then the entire plot of Plantar’s Last Stand, which again leads into Hop-Popular.
That’s just really good writing right there

Jess Watches // Fri 5 Apr // Day 191 Synopses & Favourite Scenes & Poll
Sugar (with mum) 1x01 Olivia
After solving a case in Japan, private eye John Sugar returns to LA to help find a missing woman with ties to a Hollywood legend.
Was some of this filmed on an iphone? Some shaky handcam usage throughout. His immediate obsession with a young woman was a bit iffy being that we don't know anything about him. But he made up for it when being seduced by Amy Ryan and not sleeping with her drunk. And did he somehow lose time in the shower? It wasn't clear what happened. Also, remembering his life in the style of an old classic Hollywood movie makes him seem like an unreliable narrator. A vague opener tbh, a mystery to be solved.
Loudermilk (with mum) 1x09 Highway 10 Revisited
Loudermilk, Ben, and Claire hit the road for New Orleans with the intention of crashing a wedding. Left to their own devices, the group goes off the rails.
The group, and show, goes off the rails.
Chicken Nugget Ep 8
Baekjung and his group set out to find their long-lost machine - discovering Sun-man and Baek-joong confronting Dr. Yoo and Tae-man.
I actually liked the alien storyline. It fits in with the silliness of earlier episodes, which I loved. If they cut the scientist guy out, the pacing would've been a lot better. Hoping for a strong finish.
Amphibia 1x05 Anne Theft Auto / Breakout Star
In an attempt to learn to drive the family snail wagon, Anne and Sprig take it for a joy ride. / Anne's pimple breakout makes her a celebrity in Wartwood.
This is a fun little show but the episodes are pretty standalone and I like a backstory spread throughout. Does it get that way in future eps or remain standalone?

Ultimate Episode Guide for Amphibia
In this post i’m going to make a list of which episodes are important in Amphibia to help people who are just starting the series or want to rewatch it. Keep in mind that Amphibia is a character driven series. That means that characters and their relationships are what usually matters the most in the narrative. I also highly suggest watching almost all the episodes from this arc for the subplots and continuity.
The episodes that i consider most important are marked in black like this. Adding (Don’t skip) to episodes that shouldn’t be skipped when watching this arc.
Let’s start:

Note
digging through "the temples are wrong" tag and there was speculation early on "these temples are not for them". If you were to send different girls to different Temples, who would you swap and why? Or even the Ancient/Divorce Trio - Would any of them pass their tests?
When I said that, I was still arguing for the idea that there was no prophecy, destiny is bullshit, and the temples were a diversion created by Andrias. I turned out to be partially right - there is a prophecy, but it seems like the Amphibians didn't know anything about the heroes beyond what they could tell from the prophecy itself. The temples weren't designed for the girls specifically, just the chosen in general.
That said, swapping the temples around is something I have thought about (and is part of my gem swap au). My first instinct is to reverse them, so that each of the girls gets the temple associated with their weakest trait - that's heart/responsibility for Sasha, strength/persistence for Marcy, and wit/humility for Anne.
I think that mostly works! Marcy started this whole mess in the first place by essentially 'giving up' on reality and her life. As for Sasha, Amphibia has a kind of loose definition of exactly what responsibility is, but the Second Temple seems to be testing for a willingness to put others before yourself, and that's certainly something Sasha could use a lesson in. Anne's is the weakest, but if you think about how Anne acts in early episodes like Breakout Star and Contagi-Anne, or even Swamp and Sensibility and Lost in Newtopia, I think there is something to humility for her.
The Divorce Trio is an interesting question. The thing is, the temples aren't really there to teach you something, just to test you for it. The puzzles and tests are designed to get you to demonstrate a quality you already have, not develop a new one. I also don't think that any combination of Andrias, Leif, and Barrel is meant to directly parallel the girls, but each of the classic trio is more of a jumble of all of the calamity trio.
Thinking about it, I'd say that Andrias could demonstrate persistence, but not responsibility and certainly not humility. Similarly, Leif realizing the music box needed to be stopped was an act of responsibility, but she ultimately decided that she knew what was best for everyone and ran away. Barrel fills out the trio by being humble, but not being responsible enough to side with Leif, and not being persistent enough to catch her.
The difference between Andrias and the other two, though, is how their lives played out after that moment. Andrias festered, refusing to grow or develop in any way. Leif and Barrel learned from their mistakes and became better people. Barrel became such a mighty and noble warrior that toads still talk about him with reverence to this day. Leif settled down, and began to raise a family that, generations later, would continue to carry on the legacy of love and acceptance that she founded (with Anne, with Emma, with Frobo. One of the found families of all time).

Mystery Monday #30: Elections
The US just had Congressional and statewide elections this week, so I figured this was a good week to analyze Amphibia's mayoral "elections"!
Let's start with what we know for sure:
As of the present time period, toads have run for office uncontested for generations (likely about 1000 years)
Despite this, it is still possible for a toad to lose an election if they become vastly unpopular with their constituents (Breakout Star)
All election related activities are conducted by the local newt
If contested, an election will consist of multiple trials to test various skills, culminating in a vote
The entire town affected gets to vote, as well as the surrounding towns
However, it is possible to live to 68 years old, and still not know that towns vote for each other's mayors (of course, Toadstool and Duckweed knew this, but he may have found out from the other toads)
The first two points tell me that occasionally, toads run against each other for mayor. But the last point tells me that this has probably not happened in Frog Valley for decades.
This could be because the mayors are able to easily intimidate any would-be challengers. It could be because the toads see the mayoral job as a step down from the tower, so no one wants it. It could be that it's been so long since an election happened, Hop Pop didn't remember voting in it. Or it could be that Hop Pop is just kinda stupid.
Whatever the case, it's clear that Amphibia's "elections" are typically little more than a formality before The Party's chosen candidate takes control. Much like the 2020 "election" and some of the 2022 midterms in the US.
See you next time on Mystery Monday!
