The Pity of it All Review
Today I finished The Pity of it All: a History of Jews in Germany, 1743-1933 by Amos Elon. I picked it up because I'm a USAmerican who's probably specializing in German-Jewish studies and I'd heard of it as one of the most famous texts in the field. For the sake of record-keeping, I've got a non-comprehensive pros and cons list for the book.
Pros:
Because it's written for a wider readership than academic histories, Elon's writing is really compelling. I kept surprising myself with how excited I was to read the next chapter, even for a narrative with which I am familiar.
My feelings about Heinrich Heine were never simple but boy did they get more complex!
A lot of the problems I have with the book come from its fame. It's easier to see what it ignores or could have been because I'm familiar with other corners of the field, and when it came out, it was probably reacting to scholarship of which I am not yet aware and which presented a similarly-limited portrait.
There are translations of poems which I did not know existed in translation!
Cons:
Well, it's limited. Because it's interested in German Jews' contributions to German cultural life, it mostly retells the lives of prominent artists and writers. Because it is a narrative of assimilation, it mostly depicts the assimilated middle and upper classes, even during periods where immigration was higher. And because it starts in 1743, before the first waves of unificatory nationalism, it doesn't commit to a geographic scope. Its interest in Austria-Hungary extends to Kafka and Zweig but not to social conditions in Vienna or Prague. And while I, a Herr Moses in Berlin enjoyer, appreciated the focus on that city, Elon admits that it was never where most ordinary German-Jewish people lived. A greater focus on social history might have made for a more comprehensive portrait.
When offered the choice between narrative or explanation, it tends to choose the former. The snippet of Chamisso's "Abba Glusk Leczeka" which Elon quotes is not, as he frames it, the voice of the poet, but that of the main character, an 18th-century figure speaking to Moses Mendelssohn, not his son Abraham. Likewise, because the book begins with Mendelssohn's entry to Berlin, it has to end with an exit.
The translations of the poems were not usually very good. I think I could make better ones if I had the time, and for some (eg "Abba Glusk Leczeka") I might need to.
Next it's back to academic articles with Berlin's Forgotten Future!

Amos Elon - The Pity of it All
Two things interesting here i thought -
1) Germany wasn't uniquely antisemitic leading into the 20th century - it may have even been uniquely multicultural in some senses! Useful for understanding the root causes of antisemitism and the Holocaust.
2) 19th century eugenicist ideology/race science was present also among Jewish european intellectual cohorts. Important for giving context to the racialized thinking of early zionist settlers.

So I finally have the time to translate this whole thing, and wow! This helps a lot with worldbuilding!
It's all Felps, baby! He found Richas and brought him home, and it all sort of spiraled from there.
You'll see what the Favela Five are like together in the fic itself. Cellbit should even have himself a sidekick or two in the next chapter, so that'll be fun!
Hombre Misterioso hates the Federation. Roier, meanwhile, works at a cafe with Tina right by the Federation's downtown building. He's Very Complex, and He's Very Sad. (We should be getting a Jaiden appearance sooner rather than later.)
I imagine the Federation of Heroes to a sort of commentary on for-profit charity, I guess? It's very corrupt, but it's ingrained in absolutely everything in the world. It has hands in the police, the fire department, the hospitals, the government, the schools. Imagine if Elon Musk ran a superhero agency, it's sort of like that. It has a lot in common with the OG Federation of Heroes from my original superhero au from last fall, so go and find that if you want more secret information.
My Hero Academia is still real. Take that as canon.

The above video ⬆️ is an excellent share that shows the actual state agents confiscating Amos Miller’s food. The transcript is below 👇 .
You can see the depth and breadth of the scope of this lawsuit, which affects every Private Member Association (PMA) in the USA, including those that are formed by doctors who left the medical system and practice as tribal practitioners.
Click to Help AMOS MILLER with Legal Fees
Amos Miller, the Amish Farmer in Bird in Hand PA has been raided and is being sued by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture in 2024. In this video I am going to provide you with details surrounding the January 2024 raid of Millers Organic Farm by the State of Pennsylvania; a raid which comes just one year after the conclusion of the Federal Government’s lawsuit against Miller in the United States vs Miller Organic Farm case.
PLEASE SHARE THIS VIDEO: there has been very little media coverage of the most recent raid and the scope of this suit is too large to be glazed over.
I covered Miller’s Federal case which spanned from 2019-2023 in 2 videos, linked below.
As it stands in the USA today, every meat and dairy product that is sold at the retail level must be either directly inspected by a USDA or state agent, or (as in the case with dairy) must be processed by an establishment with license and/or permits from the state or federal government.
Private membership associations like Miller’s Organic Farm, as well as herdshares, etc. are final avenues through which small farmers can provide product direct to consumers without government mediation.
Even moreso, it is the final avenue through which YOU the consumer can opt-out of a dangerously centralized agricultural system, a system that is at present a threat to National security.
Henry Kissinger, National Security advisor under Nixon and Ford said this: “Control oil and you control nations, control food and you control people.”
If the state or federal government can de-legitimize or bankrupt Miller’s 4000+ member Private Membership Association, it could signal the beginning of the end for thousands of other small farmers across the USA who are operating under the same framework.
If you are local to Pennsylvania, or can at all make the trip I want to encourage you to be present at the Lancaster County Courthouse on February 29th at at 11:30 am for the COURT RALLY that will directly precede Amos’s Court Hearing at 1pm.

Ask a big fan of your YouTube channel I have a pretty good idea of the movies you like, but I'm curious what kind of music you're into, of you're a music kinda person?
I have no clue how to classify my own music tastes... but some of my favorite bands/musicians include Nine Inch Nails, Tori Amos, Rage Against the Machine, St Vincent, Stevie Wonder, T. Rex, Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Garbage, Louis Armstrong, Weird Al, Rare Earth, Talking Heads, Agnes Obel, Loreena McKennitt, Lady Gaga... and some pre-Elon Grimes.

The Pity of it All - Amos Elon
This was exactly the reason i wanted to read a book like this actually - to read about the conditions of the jewish minority in Europe, not from the perspective of christians looking in, nor the perspective of rich jews looking down, but from the masses of the community itself - the book rarely achieved this, but here's an example at least.
