help maryland find a new state song
with the horse race this weekend it has come to my attention that maryland uninstalled (/disowned? /deplatformed??) its state song 2 years ago and has yet to select a replacement. for some reason they haven't asked for my input yet, but naturally my dad & I compiled a list of popular songs by musical artists from maryland and now I need your help determining which one should be maryland's new state song.
here's the playlist:
disclaimer: I am not from Maryland but I have been there several times. love those pink highways
if you have any suggestions not listed here, please comment/reply/say in the tags <3

Alvin Childress
Tumblr media
Alvin Childress (September 15, 1907 – April 19, 1986) was an American actor, who is best known for playing the cabdriver Amos Jones in the 1950s television comedy series Amos 'n' Andy.
Alvin Childress was born in Meridian, Mississippi. He was educated at Rust College, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. When he initially entered college, Childress intended to become a doctor, enrolling in typical pre-med courses. He had no thoughts of becoming involved in acting, but became involved in theater outside of classes. Childress and Rex Ingram in the Federal Theatre Project production of Haiti (1938)
Childress's first wife was the former Alice Herndon, who established herself as a successful writer and actress under the name of Alice Childress (1916–1994); the couple was married from 1934 to 1957 and had a daughter, Jean Rosa. From 1961 to 1973, Childress worked as an unemployment interviewer for the Los Angeles Department of Personnel and in the Civil Service Commission of Los Angeles County.
Childress moved to New York City and became an actor with Harlem's Lafayette Players, a troupe of stock players associated with the Lafayette Theatre. Soon, he was engaged as an actor in the Federal Theater Project, the American Negro Theater, and in all-black race film productions such as Keep Punching (1939). His greatest success on the stage was his performance as Noah in the popular drama, Anna Lucasta, which ran for 957 performances. He also worked at Teachers College of Columbia University. Childress also operated his own radio and record store in New York City. When he learned about casting for the Amos 'n' Andy television series, Childress decided to audition for a role. He was hired a year before the show went on the air.
In 1951, he was cast as the level-headed, hard-working and honest Amos Jones in the popular television series, The Amos 'n' Andy Show, which ran for two years on CBS. Childress originally tried out for the role of The Kingfish, but Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden cast him as Amos. Since he had been hired a year before the show began, Gosden and Correll turned the search for an actor to play "The Kingfish" over to Childress. In a 1979 interview, Childress shared information about some of the candidates. Cab Calloway was considered but found wanting by Gosden because of his straight hair. Childress said there were many famous men, with and without actual acting experience, who wanted to play the role. Eventually, old-time vaudeville comedian Tim Moore was cast as the Kingfish.
Shortly after the television show had ended, plans to turn it into a vaudeville act were announced in 1953, with Childress, Williams and Moore playing the same roles as they had in the television series. It is not known if there were any performances. In 1956, after the television show was no longer in production, Childress and some of his fellow cast members: Tim Moore, Spencer Williams, and Lillian Randolph along with her choir, began a tour of the US as "The TV Stars of Amos 'n' Andy". The tour was halted by CBS as the network considered this an infringement of their rights to the program and its cast of characters. Despite the threats which ended the 1956 tour, Childress, along with Moore, Williams and Johnny Lee were able to perform one night in 1957 in Windsor, Ontario, apparently without legal action. When he tried for work as an actor, Childress found none as he was typecast as Amos Jones. For a short time, Childress found himself parking cars for an upscale Beverly Hills restaurant.
Childress also appeared in roles on the television series Perry Mason, Sanford and Son, Good Times and The Jeffersons and in the films Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and The Day of the Locust (1975). When Childress appeared as a minister in a 1972 episode of Sanford and Son, he was reunited with two former cast members: Lillian Randolph of Amos 'n' Andy in the role of Aunt Hazel and Lance Taylor, Jr. of Anna Lucasta, with the role of Uncle Edgar.
Childress suffered from diabetes and other ailments. He died at age 78 on April 19, 1986, in Inglewood, California. He was buried at National Memorial Harmony Park in Landover, Maryland.

The band had experienced multiple line-up changes, with Leon Schneiderman, Dale Turner, Sam Phipps, Danny Elfman, Steve Bartek, and John "Vatos" Hernandez being the constant members for most of their history. As a rock band, Oingo Boingo started as a ska and punk-influenced[6][7]new wave octet, achieving significant popularity in Southern California. During the mid-1980s, the band adopted a more pop-oriented style, until a significant genre change to alternative rock in 1994. At that point, the name was shortened to simply Boingo and the keyboard and horn section were dropped. The band retired after a farewell concert on Halloween 1995, for which they reverted to the name Oingo Boingo and readopted the horn section.
The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo began as a street theater troupe in Los Angeles, founded by Richard Elfman.[9] The name was inspired by a fictional secret society on the Amos 'n' Andy TV series called The Mystic Knights of the Sea. The earliest version of the band employed as many as 15 performers at any given time, playing over 30 instruments, including some instruments built by band members.
Richard's brother Danny Elfman joined the band in 1974 and later became its leader. The group gradually moved away from its street theater origins and transformed into a dedicated musical theater act. The group performed an eclectic repertoire, ranging from Cab Calloway covers to instrumentals in the style of Balinese gamelan and Russian ballet music and, later, original songs by Danny Elfman. Guitarist Steve Bartek joined in 1976 as musical co-director. That year, the troupe appeared on the TV talent contest program The Gong Show, which they won.[10][11]
In 1979, Danny Elfman reformed the group as a dedicated rock band, under the new name Oingo Boingo, at which point most existing members left. Steve Bartek and a brass trio of Dale Turner, Sam "Sluggo" Phipps, and Leon Schneiderman continued with the new band. Various reasons were given for the restart as a rock band, notably Danny's emerging musical interests, and reducing the need for transportation and set-up of multiple stage sets and props. Elfman stated the shift was inspired by ska revival bands such as the Specials, Madness, and the Selecter, new wave bands like XTC, Devo, and Fun Boy Three, as well as the "energy and speed" of punk.[12][13][7][14]
The name Oingo Boingo was settled on in 1979, at which point their early song "I'm Afraid" appeared on the Rhino Records Los Angeles rock and new wave "up and coming" compilation, L.A. In.
That same year, the band self-funded a promo EP record, known as the "Demo EP", for distribution to radio stations and recording industry A&R representatives to help land a contract. The effort paid off, as the record caught the attention of I.R.S. Records, who released a revised version of the EP in 1980: the Oingo Boingo (EP).
Did you know that: Oingo Boingo (/ˈɔɪŋɡoʊ ˈbɔɪŋɡoʊ/) was an American new wave band formed by songwriter Danny Elfman in 1979. The band emerged from a surrealist musical theatre troupe, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, that Elfman had led and written material for in the years previous.[5]Their highest-charting song, "Weird Science", reached No. 45 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Oingo Boingo was known for their high-energy live concerts and experimental music, which can be described as combining elements of music such as art, punk, ska, rock, pop, jazz, and world, amongst other genres.[8] The band's body of work spanned 17 years, with various genre and line-up changes. Their best-known songs include "Only a Lad", "Little Girls" (yes, that's an actual song), "Dead Man's Party" and "Weird Science"
now isn’t that
wacky?

In the 1930s and 1940s Black performers were relegated to a collection of nightclubs and theaters known colloquially as the Chitlin Circuit.
Whereas the old TOBA circuit of vaudeville featured comedians with props, pratfalls, and costumes, the new generation of Chitlin Circuit comics pined for mainstream success. They traded their flamboyant checkered suits for tapered tuxedos and emulated wise guy comics like Bob Hope. Soon a line was drawn between the old TOBA style and the new Chitlin Circuit upstarts.
Stand-up comic Nick Stewart was a bridge between the two. Considered an innovator by old people and an Uncle Tom by the young, Stewart was a regular at the Lafayette, America’s top Black theater prior to the Apollo:
“See, there was a Black theater circuit, understand? And the circuit included nightclubs and theaters … and all of those theaters in those days were owned by whites … The comedy was ignorant and profane. The comedy was low burlesque … Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore - big bands, stand-up comedians … low comedy...
“When I came up the kids were roaming the streets in New York in little gangs. Early on my parents were Garveyites. You ever hear of Marcus Garvey? He had advocated that we should go back to Africa and build a nation of our own. So I was raised in that culture … I started with that mentality. I also became disenchanted with getting an education. I said, ‘What am I going to do with an education?’ I knew I couldn’t do anything with it … Everyone with an education was a Pullman porter …
“We used to roam the streets in packs and get in all kinds of trouble … but one of the good things that happened to me… I stumbled into a place called the Hoofer’s Club...
“The Hoofer’s Club was where all the great dancers like Bill Robinson would come and play cards. And then they’d go in the back room and sometimes challenge each other to dance. So I came by this Hoofer’s Club and I saw the owner did the sweeping. I said, ‘Let me sweep for you.’ He let me sweep. He let me come in the backroom and watch the great Bill Robinson and that’s how I learned to dance … many of the kids that came in, that’s how they learned to dance … We went down to this Hoofer’s Club and we used to form acts … the Four Step Brothers, Honi Coles … and around the corner was the Musician’s Club and that’s how a million bands got started.”
Stewart danced in Cotton Club musicals like Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky. He formed a comedy team with comic Sammy Gardiner and they toured the Chitlin Circuit as Sawdust and Sand. Their stage names were typical for the era. Among his Chitlin Circuit contemporaries were Porkchops Patterson, Hamtree Harrington, Crack Shot Hackley, Pigmeat Markham, and the comedy team Stump & Stumpy.
“See, in those days, all Black comedians had funny names: Porkchops. Rassa. Pigmeat … Blacks had their own little group that couldn’t get downtown. The act played at the Lafayette Theater. It didn’t pay us any money, fifteen dollars at the end of the week, but I got the act on the stage.”
Stewart hitched his star to the big bands and became a resident comic with Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. He taught bandleaders the Sawdust and Sand routine and made each jazz star a straight man.
“I went on the road with Cab Calloway as a featured comedian. I taught Cab the routine ... When we would play the South in the 1930s … Blacks couldn’t come to the theaters. Well, we broke the barrier … We were before the Civil Rights. We broke the barrier in the 1930s.”
