For months, forcibly transferred children, ages four months to 18 years, were listed in a public Russian adoption database without mention of their Ukrainian origin. That they were in the database at all was not widely known until May 31, when the Russian dissident outlet iStories exposed its use in an article alleging that the children were being made to sew camouflage nets for the Russian military, which some were even forced to join.
The iStories revelations prompted Russia to scrub the database of all information about the Ukrainian children. Fortunately, much of it had been scraped by at least one group of open-source intelligence (OSINT) investigators who asked not to be named in order to continue their sensitive work. Such groups are scouring publicly available databases, social media, precision satellite imagery showing the locations of camps, and other sources to track the disappearing Ukrainian children.
The Ukrainian government officially estimates that about 19,500 Ukrainian children have been taken to Russia since the start of the war. The exact number is unknowable, and keeping track of all of the children is nearly impossible—some of the parents have been killed or lost touch with their children as Russia shifts them from place to place.
At the beginning of the war, some parents in eastern Ukraine sent their children to what the Russians told them were summer camps. The parents believed that the camps would keep their children safe, or provide them with enough food to eat, Syniuk says. Reports have since alleged severe abuse at the camps. No matter the conditions, the camps now appear to have been a pretext for luring the children away from their parents and into Russia. As Raymond said: “They can be given caviar every day, riding horsies and having the best day ever, and it’s still a war crime.”
Dozens of these camps are scattered across Russia, according to Conflict Observatory, an American NGO that collects and analyzes evidence of war crimes in Ukraine. The camp farthest from Ukraine is 3,900 miles from the border, in Russia’s Magadan Oblast. The facilities apparently specialize in political reeducation; some reports suggest that military training is also part of their program.
When Ukrainian parents are ready to bring their children home from camp, many are told that the children will remain in Russia, or that there is a “delay.” Some families have managed to recover their children, but only with great difficulty; others report that their children are not allowed to leave, have been transferred to different camps, or have become unreachable. Now, says Veronika Bilkova, an author of an Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe report about the forcible transfer of children published in May, “it seems that really the Russian Federation is getting ready, legally speaking, to be able to adopt these [camp] children as well.”
Not all of the Ukrainian children in Russia came by way of the camps. Others are evacuees, removed by Russian soldiers from areas of Ukraine that Russia’s shelling had made perilous. Anya belonged to this group. Still others were transferred through a process of filtration, in which they were separated from their parents at camps like Bezimenne, in Donetsk, where Russian forces detain and interrogate Ukrainian citizens in Russian-held territories. And then there are the children from Ukrainian orphanages raided by Russian troops, taken across the border to orphanages in Russia.
Many of these supposed orphans actually have parents: In both Ukraine and Russia, families who fall on hard times commonly send their children temporarily to orphanages, experts told me, expecting to later recover them. But once the children are in Russia, according to the OSCE report, “the Russian Federation does not take any steps to actively promote the return of Ukrainian children. Rather, it creates various obstacles for families seeking to get their children back.”
At the moment, the younger the child is, the bleaker the prospects of a return to Ukraine. The only children to have made it home so far, according to legal and human-rights advocates I spoke with, are those old enough to have called their parents or guardians—provided that they have any. Some of those who have made it home reported seeing younger children they knew in Russia—but with the carousel of stolen children still spinning, those sighted likely won’t stay in the same place for long.

Americans are exhausted by political news (AP) As a Democrat who immersed himself in political news during the presidential campaign, Ziad Aunallah has much in common with many Americans since the election. He’s tuned out. “People are mentally exhausted,” said Aunallah, 45, of San Diego. “Everyone knows what is coming and we are just taking some time off.” Television ratings—and now a new poll—clearly illustrate the phenomenon. About two-thirds of American adults say they have recently felt the need to limit media consumption about politics and government because of overload, according to the survey from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Smaller percentages of Americans are limiting their intake of news about overseas conflicts, the economy or climate change, the poll says.
Cutting the Deficit Is Easy—It’s Just Unpopular (WSJ) The federal deficit reached $1.8 trillion, or 6.4% of GDP, last fiscal year, a record outside of war, recession or emergency. Musk and Trump have promised to attack it by cutting federal spending. One simple step would be to stop adding to it. And yet last week neither stood in the way of Congress’s $300 billion in new spending. The reason is obvious: Spending is popular with voters and both parties. This is why commissions, think tanks and earnest outsiders have been papering Washington for decades with ideas to cut spending and the deficit—and mostly gotten nowhere.
Panama’s president calls Trump’s Chinese canal claim ‘nonsense’ (BBC) Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino has denied claims by US president-elect Donald Trump that there are Chinese soldiers stationed at the Panama Canal. In recent days Trump has threatened to take the canal back into US control, accusing Panama of “ripping off” the US by charging high shipping rates. In a message posted to his Truth Social account on Wednesday, Trump wrote: “Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal”. Mulino called the claim “nonsense” and said that there is “absolutely no Chinese interference”. Mulino also rejected the possibility of reducing tolls for US ships or ceding control of the canal, a major shipping channel which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. “The canal is Panamanian and belongs to Panamanians. There’s no possibility of opening any kind of conversation around this reality,” he said.
Finland Says Vessel Suspected of Cutting Cable May Be Part of Russia’s ‘Shadow Fleet’ (NYT) The Finnish authorities seized an oil tanker on Thursday on the suspicion that it was involved in cutting vital undersea cables and said the ship might have been part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” aimed at evading Western sanctions. In a statement, the police in Finland said the authorities had boarded the Eagle S tanker in Finnish waters. The ship, which is registered in the Cook Islands in the South Pacific, had been sailing from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Port Said, Egypt, when it was detained. The police said they were investigating whether the vessel was involved in the cutting on Wednesday of the Estlink 2 submarine cable, which carries electricity between Finland and Estonia. The Finnish authorities said Thursday that four other cables carrying data also had been damaged. The police called the latest cable cuts “aggravated vandalism.” The Finnish authorities said the tanker might be part of Russia’s shadow fleet, which emerged as a way to circumvent Western-imposed price caps on Russian oil transported by sea.
Ukraine’s military intelligence says North Korean troops are suffering heavy battlefield losses (AP) North Korean troops are suffering heavy losses in the fighting in Russia’s Kursk region and facing logistical difficulties as a result of Ukrainian attacks, Ukraine’s military intelligence said Thursday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week that 3,000 North Korean troops have been killed and wounded in the fighting in the Kursk region. It marked the first significant estimate by Ukraine of North Korean casualties several weeks after Kyiv announced that North Korea had sent 10,000 to 12,000 troops to Russia to help it in the almost 3-year war.
China’s Xi orders a stop to a spree of mass killings known as ‘revenge on society crimes’ (AP) The order came from the top. China’s leader Xi Jinping wants the recent spree of mass killings that shocked the country not to happen again. He ordered local governments to prevent future “extreme cases.” The attacks, where drivers mow down people on foot or knife-wielding assailants stab multiple victims, are not new in China. But the latest surge drew attention. In November alone, three took place: A man struck people at an elementary school in Hunan province, wounding 30, after suffering investment losses. A student who failed his examination stabbed and killed eight at a vocational school in the city of Yixing. The most victims, 35 people, resulted from a man mowing down a crowd in the southern city of Zhuhai, supposedly upset over his divorce. While pinpointing the exact motive of such attacks can be difficult, there is an overwhelming feeling of being pressured within Chinese society, experts say. “On the surface, it seems like there are individual factors, but we see there’s a common link,” Wu Qiang, a former political science professor, said. “This link is, in my personal opinion, every person has a feeling of injustice. They feel deeply that this society is very unfair and they can’t bear it anymore.”
Taiwan is preparing more than just the military for a China invasion (Business Insider) Taiwan's Presidential Office held its first-ever tabletop war games on Thursday in a sign of heightened tensions with Beijing. The exercise simulates a military escalation with China, which claims Taiwan as its territory. The three-hour wargame exercise involved central and local governments, as well as civil groups. It simulated various scenarios, including one in which self-governed Taiwan is "on the verge of conflict" and "high intensity" grey-zone warfare, Lai said. Liu Shyh-fang, Taiwan's interior minister, said the island's government aims to train over 50,000 volunteers to respond to emergencies by next year. Authorities hope to involve a range of people, including taxi drivers and security guards, in the effort.
South Korea’s opposition-controlled National Assembly votes to impeach acting President Han (AP) South Korea’s opposition-controlled National Assembly voted Friday to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo despite vehement protests by governing party lawmakers, further deepening the country’s political crisis set off by President Yoon Suk Yeol’s stunning imposition of martial law and ensuing impeachment. The impeachments of the country’s top two officials worsen its political turmoil, deepen its economic uncertainty and hurt its international image. The single-chamber National Assembly passed Han’s impeachment motion with a 192-0 vote. Lawmakers with the governing People Power Party boycotted the vote and surrounded the podium where assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik was seated and shouted that the vote was “invalid” and demanded Woo’s resignation. No violence or injuries were reported.
Israel Loosened Its Rules to Bomb Hamas Fighters, Killing Many More Civilians (NYT) At exactly 1 p.m. on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel’s military leadership issued an order that unleashed one of the most intense bombing campaigns in contemporary warfare. Effective immediately, the order granted mid-ranking Israeli officers the authority to strike thousands of militants and military sites that had never been a priority in previous wars in Gaza. Officers could now pursue not only the senior Hamas commanders, arms depots and rocket launchers that were the focus of earlier campaigns, but also the lowest-ranking fighters. In each strike, the order said, officers had the authority to risk killing up to 20 civilians. The order, which has not previously been reported, had no precedent in Israeli military history. Mid-ranking officers had never been given so much leeway to attack so many targets, many of which had lower military significance, at such a high potential civilian cost. It meant, for example, that the military could target rank-and-file militants as they were at home surrounded by relatives and neighbors, instead of only when they were alone outside. The military leadership changed its rules of engagement because it believed that Israel faced an existential threat, according to a senior military officer who answered questions about the order on the condition of anonymity.
Israel’s plan to double the number of settlers in the Golan Heights (AP) A dry mountain wind whipped through a cluster of Israeli flags at the entrance of a kibbutz in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, where the tranquility belies the tumultuous events unfolding nearby. Earlier this month, Syrian President Bashar Assad was ousted after nearly 25 years in power. Within hours, Israeli tanks rolled past a razor wire-reinforced fence into the Golan’s demilitarized buffer zone in Syria, created as part of a 1974 ceasefire between the countries. Israel said it was a temporary move to secure its border. Days later, the Israeli government approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s $11 million plan of financial incentives to double the population of Israeli settlers in the Golan Heights, which Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. Israel will “continue to hold onto it, make it flourish and settle it,” Netanyahu said. The international community, with one exception, considers the Golan to be occupied Syrian territory, while the United Nations lists Israeli settlements there as illegal. In 2019, the United States became the only country to recognize Israel’s 1981 annexation.
Israel Bombs Yemeni Airport and Ports After Houthi Missile Launches (NYT) The Israeli military on Thursday unleashed a significant air assault on parts of Yemen controlled by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia in retaliation for the group’s missile attacks against Israel, striking back at an adversary more than a thousand miles away. The Israeli assault comes after a week of the Houthis’ near-nightly launches of ballistic missiles and drones against Israel. At least four people were killed and 21 others injured in the attack on Thursday after Israel struck the international airport in Sana and the city of Al Hodeidah, the Saba state news agency said, citing Yemen’s Health Ministry.
Choir named world's oldest during Christmas concert (BBC) A choir with an average age of 94 have sung their way into the record books as they have been crowned the oldest in the world. The Prime Timers, made up of 17 members from seven care homes in Warwickshire, broke the Guinness World Record during a Christmas carol concert in Stratford-upon-Avon on Thursday. The singers, aged between 87 and 99, were joined at the Crowne Plaza Hotel by Tony Christie and the show was hosted by actor Sian Reeves, who advocates for therapeutic use of music. Speaking before the performance, member Chris Righton, 91, said he wasn't feeling nervous, adding: "You can't have nerves. You've got rid of them all by the time you're 90."

"- all that said, Trump is a smart guy: but I don‚t see why a boarder wall got an appropriation bill passed in support, after his administration. Now because the money was raised for that, Biden has to use it for that.-",
"- But if it was done sooner like a Great Wall of China style, the migrant crisis might not be as bad. You make all this fuss about illegal immigration, but then legally, under the label of migrant, people come over, inciting the reaction of the American natives who are jobless.-",
"- I don‚t understand this thing with the wording behind laws. Apparently under the Impediment act, if another president wanted a bill passed for a wall, the next president can‚t use the money for anything else. In this case, a wall should be built.-",
"- There‚no room for being sentimental about it. Your not hurting someone by maintaining the structure of a country. For proponents, it‚like they‚re saying, why can‚t we have more illegal immigration.-",

"I think when most people shop for coke or cola or soda, they typically buy what‚on sale. Sure companies like Coca Cola and Pepsi try to push their brands as something more attractive, but I don‚t think people are that picky when it comes to the taste between them.",
"Coca Cola is iconic. It has less sugar than Pepsi, the last time I checked, which admittedly was years ago. I think for subtle taste buds, that small decrease in sweetness adds to the taste. It‚not heavily advertised like Pepsi with its Michael Jackson sponsored concerts‚-",
"U can now get the Mexico sugar cane glass old school Coca Cola bottles at Chipotles or an H mart. I think at ShopRite you can get medium& small sized plastic bottles. Ive heard not so pro male rumors about Pepsi‚other brand Mountain Dew.Comparatively, I think Sprite is better.",
"I like how Pepsi adopted the blue color for its bottles after yrs of a predominantly white can. But there‚a nice feel to bottles Coca Cola uses vs the dominant can style drinks of Pepsi.-",
"Maybe Ive had Coca Cola polar bear engraved in mind from Christmas time, but I prefer that during holidays. Maybe it‚the red color of the can/bottle during the green&red Christmas colors season‚combine it w/a possible white (from snow) Christmas,&U feel like a cozy polar bear.",
"But Pepsi has arguably some good brands. Like Tropicana for instance. But they sell a same taste less sugar version called Trop50 for a higher price. Doesn‚t it cost more to add more sugar? Or is the cost of the added sugar less than the cost of charging more for less sugar? -",
"Trop50- the less sugar version of Tropicana orange juice should just be the regular Tropicana. With obesity on the rise, why bother with the added sugar?",
"Something that Pepsi did right is the Bubly brand. While you get a watered down version of it for free at the PepsiCo locations, what they sell in the cans has sugar free reasonable flavor. It‚a great alternative to seltzer or even water.-",
"I personally drink Bubly after adding two capfuls of the separately purchased flavor to the 1 liter of carbonated water from my SodaStream machine.-",
"Bubly is good for home drinking, but if I were 2 buy soda at Chipotles or McDonalds, for whatever reason, I‚m inclined 2 buy pre-made/pre-bottled Coca Cola. Maybe it‚because I cannot make that with water and a soda stream machine.-",
"But Pepsi seems to acquire some solid brands. It has Pizza Hut pizza (though I also like the Brooklyn style pizza of Dominos or the Little Caesars good low price pizza). It has Starbucks, though I think America is missing out on Nescaf√© Dolce Gusto coffees‚-",
"But that said, regarding Pepsis and Coca Colas 2nd-ary brands like Mountain Dew or Sprite, respectively, I think after a workout, if I want sugar, Sprite in its lime flavor would be more favorable/refreshing than Mountain Dew. But then lime flavor Bubly isn‚t a bad choice either.",
"- I guess the overall point I‚m trying to make is why companies charge more for less sugar or what makes us choose one brand over the other in terms of similar products‚-",
"Another ominous type thing probably worth breaking my silence here and elsewhere, in plain English, is:Has anyone noticed the amount of blue eyed people in movies or amongst American actors? I started watching Charlie Wilson‚War, &U just seem to see a lot of blue eyed people.-",

Recent apprehensions indicate that Putin is discreetly attempting to curtail the influence of some of his most efficacious proponents of the conflict in Ukraine.
Putin is discreetly attempting The Russian administration seems to be tightening its grip on military bloggers — even if a substantial number of these war-focused bloggers overtly endorse Russia's incursion into Ukraine. While these weblogs serve as an effective tool for disseminating propaganda and rallying public support for the war, their robust critique of errors made in Ukraine could potentially erode backing for Vladimir Putin's regime. The detention of several prominent bloggers hints at the extent of the Kremlin's apprehension. In August, American researchers Donald Jensen and Angel Howard wrote in The Kyiv Independent that milbloggers have "gradually, securely, and subversively — even if unintentionally — challenged the Kremlin's management of the war in Ukraine, the performance of the Russian military, and, consequently, the competence of the state." Milblogs, primarily hosted on the Russian messaging platform Telegram, have not only gained popularity among a Russian populace wary of official media but have also evolved into an indispensable resource for Western governments, think tanks, and media outlets seeking to monitor the Russian war campaign. DOMINIQUE FAGET/AFP via Getty Images These blogs have brought to light blunders such as Russian troops assembling in formation only to be decimated by HIMARS rockets. They have also exposed how Russian soldiers are being dispatched into battle lacking sufficient arms and ammunition or are being used as expendable pawns in brutal confrontations, as seen in Bakhmut. In times of war, media censorship is a common practice in democratic nations. Both the U.S. and British governments monitored and censored news reports during World War II to safeguard sensitive information and bolster morale. Even today, Israeli media is subject to scrutiny by military censors, and the British government can issue DSMA notices to request news organizations not to publish certain stories. Nevertheless, the intricate relationship between Putin and milbloggers exemplifies the complexities of social media in an authoritarian regime. Many milbloggers are fervent nationalists with deep-seated connections to the Russian military and intelligence apparatus. This symbiotic alliance benefits both parties: leaked information enables bloggers to amass wealth through increased web traffic from information-hungry audiences, while the leakers gain a degree of influence over the milbloggers' agendas. Putin Putin engages with residents during a visit to the Ukrainian city of Mariupol on March 18. POOL/AFP via Getty Images The mere existence of milblogs amid the Kremlin's crackdown on most other media outlets signifies that the Russian government acknowledges their value. Blogs also serve as weapons in the fierce realm of Russian politics. Influential politicians, such as Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, clandestinely sponsor milbloggers as conduits for their political objectives, as noted by Jensen and Howard. Putin, whose reliance on the military, security services, and affluent oligarchs is accompanied by a sense of distrust, employs blogs to indirectly convey his preferences and signal the rise or fall of individuals. Factions within the government also utilize blogs to discredit adversaries and shift blame for errors, such as military setbacks. However, there exists the peril that milbloggers may become uncontrollable forces. Igor Girkin, a former KGB officer who has emerged as a prominent pro-war blogger, was detained in July after labeling Putin as a "base individual" and a "timid coward." In August, a Moscow court ordered Girkin's continued detention for at least another month. Another figure, Andrey Kurshin, an ultranationalist who frequently criticized the Russian military's actions in Ukraine, faced arrest in August as well. Russia court Igor Girkin Strelkov Russian nationalist critic and former military commander Igor Girkin behind a glass enclosure for defendants during a court hearing in Moscow in August. REUTERS/Maxim Shemetov Nevertheless, the Kremlin must tread a precarious path. On one hand, milbloggers actively promote a pro-war narrative, motivating Russians to enlist and contribute funds to the soldiers ("a portion of which they undoubtedly misappropriate," according to Jensen and Howard). Perhaps even more crucially, milbloggers serve as a release valve for a Russian populace that was never enthusiastic about invading Ukraine and now bears the brunt of Western economic sanctions. On the other hand, the roots of Russia's failure in Ukraine can be traced back to the country's senior leadership. Despite years of substantial defense expenditures and Putin's assertions of possessing "invincible" weaponry, Russia has been unable to subjugate its smaller neighbor, Ukraine, which has launched a counteroffensive threatening to expel Russian forces from Ukrainian soil. Blame can be apportioned in many directions, but the crackdown on milbloggers suggests that the Kremlin is keen on preventing them from directing their criticisms at Russia's ultimate decision-maker: Putin. Michael Peck is a defense writer whose work has been featured in Forbes, Defense News, Foreign Policy magazine, and various other publications. He holds a master's degree in political science. The Taliban have detained multiple foreign nationals, including Americans and Europeans, in Afghanistan in what appears to be a systematic roundup by the group, which has a history of holding Westerners hostage to trade for political advantage. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently said “several” U.S. citizens are prisoners of the Taliban. Others in Taliban custody include British and Polish citizens, their governments confirmed.
The detention of an unusually large number of Westerners, possibly more than a dozen, comes amid an alarming rise in hostage diplomacy—in which citizens of one state are captured and traded for advantage by another—by countries hostile to the United States. Russia detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in late March and accused him of spying for the United States, an accusation the Biden administration has denied.
The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, a media advocacy organization named for a U.S. photographer murdered by the Islamic State in Syria in 2014, found that the number of Americans wrongly held abroad has risen by 580 percent in the past decade, while the length of time they’re held has increased by 60 percent. Its 2022 report said “Iran, China, Venezuela, Syria, and Russia account for 75% of U.S. nationals currently wrongfully detained,” some for as long as four years, and that detentions are outpacing releases.
“There are rising concerns that U.S. nationals are being increasingly targeted for detention in order to secure political leverage against the United States,” the report said.
There are any number of theories behind the Taliban’s recent dragnet. The sweep could be a sign that the Taliban aim to rid Afghanistan of any Western presence as they impose their extremist values, such as banning girls from post-primary education. Some security sources think the Taliban may be planning to use the foreigners as collateral for prisoner swaps, as they have several times before. Others think it’s a move to pressure the Biden administration to release billions of dollars in foreign reserves frozen by U.S. financial sanctions. Still others believe the hostages are meant to secure, at last, U.S. and Western recognition of an outlaw regime that still is persona non grata a year and half after its violent takeover of Afghanistan.
“The Taliban’s primary objective in abducting and detaining Western civilians is to compel their governments to establish direct communication with the Taliban regime instead of relying on nongovernment organizations,” said Mirwais Naab, a former deputy foreign minister of Afghanistan. The Taliban are also concerned about the potential for NGO workers to conduct espionage for the United States, he said.
Rafi Fazil, a former deputy national security advisor to the Islamic Republic, said this “new wave” of detentions was a reaction to diplomatic isolation “to build pressure on the West because they are not being recognized, and that is taking a huge toll.” De facto Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has complained that the Taliban have met all conditions for diplomatic recognition and yet remain out in the cold.
The Taliban have long found hostage-taking to be an expedient method of extracting favors from the United States. U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was held captive for five years by the Haqqani network, a Taliban affiliate headed by their current de facto interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani, after the soldier deserted his base in southern Afghanistan in 2009. He was swapped in May 2014 for five Taliban operatives who had been in custody at Guantánamo Bay, in what was seen as a huge victory for the Islamists.
Last year, the Taliban released former U.S. Navy diver Mark Frerichs after more than two years in return for Bashir Noorzai, a drug trafficker who was 17 years into a life sentence in the United States for conspiracy to traffic heroin. Filmmaker Ivor Shearer was released in September after four months’ detention. The Taliban claimed it was a goodwill gesture, and the U.S. State Department said no money or prisoners were exchanged for his freedom.
At the same time, Taliban leaders have been demanding the return of more than $9 billion in Afghanistan’s foreign exchange reserves held in banks in the United States and Europe. U.S. bans on financial transactions with sanctioned terrorists and institutions under their control were triggered when the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. (Many Taliban leaders are listed by the U.N. Security Council as terrorists, though not the group itself.) The resulting cash crisis is contributing to economic disaster. Anger at concerns that they’ll help themselves to the money could conceivably have pushed the Taliban back to their tried-and-tested tactic for getting what they want.
Blinken revealed the presence of Americans in Taliban detention to the House Foreign Affairs Committee last month. “There are several Americans who are being detained by the Taliban. We are working to secure their freedom,” he said. “As we speak, American citizens who identified themselves to us who are in Afghanistan—some of whom have been there since the withdrawal, some of whom went back to Afghanistan— … that we’re in contact with, [there are] about 175. Forty-four of them are ready to leave, and we are working to effectuate their departure.”
In a statement to Foreign Policy, the State Department confirmed that “there are several U.S. nationals who are being detained by the Taliban.” No details were given “due to privacy considerations.” The U.S. government prioritizes the safe return of citizens held abroad and like many governments believes publicity exacerbates danger—which could explain the long silence on the Afghanistan detentions, some of which date back months.
The State Department also reiterated advice against travel to Afghanistan due to the threat of civil unrest, armed conflict, terrorism, and kidnapping: “Travel to all areas of Afghanistan is unsafe. The Dept. of State assesses the risk of kidnapping or violence against U.S. citizens in Afghanistan is high.”
The number of Americans held by the Taliban could be a lot more than “several,” and perhaps as many as a dozen, according to sources familiar with the state of play.Three British detainees have been confirmed by the U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office. Poland’s foreign ministry confirmed one citizen captive. Another Pole who was detained at the same time was released for health reasons, the sources said. French and Australian citizens are also possibly in Taliban custody; this could not be immediately confirmed. It’s not clear when or where all the detentions took place.
The British government has confirmed the detention of three U.K. citizens, including two men with extensive experience working in Afghanistan on legitimate contracts and another who was traveling independently to make videos for social media. The two men on contracts were taken from a residential compound in Kabul on Jan. 11. One, 53-year-old medic Kevin Cornwell, whose family gave British media permission to name him, was working with a charity called Iqarus International, liaising with U.N. agencies to deliver aid. The man detained with him was the compound manager. Relatives said they were accused of possessing an illegal firearm, though family members say the gun was licensed by the Taliban and never used.
The men are in a wing for foreigners in a Kabul prison operated by the Taliban secret service, the General Directorate of Intelligence. After their detention was reported on April 1, they were allowed phone calls to families. Security sources say they may be moved to Kandahar in a possible first step to their release.
Poland’s foreign ministry said it was “aware of the case” of a citizen detained in Afghanistan, adding in a statement: “We cannot share any details with respect to the privacy and security of the person and their family.” It is believed that two Polish citizens were traveling with the British social media influencer, Miles Routledge, when he disappeared in early March. The British government has confirmed that Routledge is in Taliban custody, though his whereabouts and condition are unknown.
Throughout the 20 years of the republic, which was propped up by the United States, NATO, and allies until its collapse in August 2021, thousands of foreigners lived in Kabul and elsewhere in the country. Many were diplomats, journalists, aid workers, and military contractors whose major threat was kidnapping for ransom or trade. Purpose-built compounds popped up on the outskirts of the city to provide secure accommodation, catering, and other creature comforts. The Taliban are believed to have targeted these compounds, which still provide services for the many foreigners who have returned to work with humanitarian organizations, as well as some hotels in the capital.
Afghanistan doesn’t have a functional justice system, and all previous laws have been canceled. As the Taliban are not recognized as the legitimate government, there’s no diplomatic representation for foreigners in custody, and they have no access to consular support. Most embassies closed when the republic fell, and many moved to Doha, the capital of Qatar.
“By taking hostages and applying similar tactics employed by some of Afghanistan’s neighbors in the past, the Taliban hopes to coerce Western countries into engaging with them in a more diplomatic manner,” said Naab, the former deputy foreign minister. He criticized the way that Western governments and the United Nations have done little to actually curtail Taliban excesses, after enabling their takeover with the 2020 Doha peace deal and withdrawal agreement.
“These developments are the outcome of dealing with terrorists and terrorist group propagators as a legitimate government, reflecting a myopic and poorly defined approach.”

I talk about terrorism because that's what the response post was bothering me as well as the journal? Because I think it's nuanced from all sides?
It isn't terrorism if you attack soldiers, especially when it's controversial like when political conflicts happen such as invasion, occupation or oppression. Terrorism is specifically against civilians, it's the whole point: scaring or submitting civilians to an ideology or to a group. Cops and the army aren't civilians. If you have police from another country that you feel is invading your territory, you're gonna resist it. Otherwise, again, you're calling several resisting groups during history terrorists, and it is a stance that is nowhere factual nor neutral in regards to history.
Even if they are prisoners, political prisoners don't make Israel look good if their only crime is resisting an inviting political power. "Hostage" is a loaded word if you are from the Israeli side because you consider that they were unlawful in regards to the Israeli government. From a Palestinian partisan, this is absolutely a hostage situation as they are victims of being detained for resisting the oppressor, in exchange for things (people, cease fire etc), which they are.
"Political prisoners" is more neutral (in my opinion, I'm not a historian or anything), "criminals" is definitely not. It's all semantics, it depends which view you have over the conflict. It will condition which words you use, and how much you think it's loaded or manipulation, but it's not manipulation in this case, at least not as much as you seem to think.
I sure hope you wouldn't call Ukrainian resistants criminals, just because Russia would consider them as such. Just like you would not consider Northern Irish resistants as criminals because they wanted to be their own country away from the English who invaded them before. French Résistants were also criminals in regards to Pétain and Nazis. The native Americans who resisted weren't criminals either, etc etc.
Being unlawful towards a political power that is oppressive against you doesn't make you a criminal from the perspective of the victims, nor historically as we remember it after (unless propaganda).

Small, well-built Chinese EV called the Seagull poses a big threat to the US auto industry (AP) A tiny, low-priced electric car called the Seagull has American automakers and politicians trembling. The car, launched last year by Chinese automaker BYD, sells for around $12,000 in China, but drives well and is put together with craftsmanship that rivals U.S.-made electric vehicles that cost three times as much. A shorter-range version costs under $10,000. Tariffs on imported Chinese vehicles probably will keep the Seagull away from America’s shores for now, and it likely would sell for more than 12 grand if imported. But the rapid emergence of low-priced EVs from China could shake up the global auto industry in ways not seen since Japanese makers exploded on the scene during the oil crises of the 1970s. BYD, which stands for “Build Your Dreams,” could be a nightmare for the U.S. auto industry.
Mexico Prepares for a Potential Trump Win (NYT) They’re studying his interviews, bracing for mass deportations and preparing policy proposals to bring to the negotiating table. As Mexico heads toward its presidential election next month, government officials and campaign aides are also girding for a different vote: one in the United States that could return Donald Trump to the presidency. The last time Mr. Trump took office, his win surprised many of America’s allies, and his threat-filled diplomacy forced them to adapt on the go. Now, they have time to anticipate how Mr. Trump’s victory would transform relations that President Biden has tried to normalize—and they’re furiously preparing for an upheaval. For some, the memory of negotiating with Mr. Trump the last time he was in office, when he used extreme threats against Mexico, looms large. What it took to reach a deal with Mr. Trump’s team back then? “Time, patience, cold blood,” the former Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard said in an interview. “You can win, if you understand this. It’s not easy.”
Russian Forces Push Deeper Into Northern Ukraine (NYT) In the past three days, Russian troops, backed by fighter jets, artillery and lethal drones, have poured across Ukraine’s northeastern border and seized at least nine villages and settlements, and more square miles per day than at almost any other point in the war, save the very beginning. In some places, Ukrainian troops are retreating, and Ukrainian commanders are blaming each other for the defeats. Thousands of Ukrainian civilians are fleeing to Kharkiv, the nearest big city. As anxiety spreads, some hard questions loom: How far will this go? Is it just a momentary setback for the underdog Ukrainians? Or a turning point? Ukrainian soldiers, by all accounts, are exhausted. More than two years of trying to fight off a country with three times the population to draw from has left Ukraine so depleted and desperate for fresh troops that its lawmakers have voted to mobilize convicts, a controversial practice that Ukraine had ridiculed Russia for using in the first half of the war.
Russia is ramping up sabotage across Europe (Economist) The fire that broke out in the Diehl Metall factory in the Lichterfelde suburb of Berlin on May 3rd was not in itself suspicious. The facility, a metals plant, stored sulphuric acid and copper cyanide, two chemicals that can combine dangerously when ignited. Accidents happen. What raised eyebrows was the fact that Diehl’s parent company makes the iris-t air-defence system which Ukraine is using to parry Russian missiles. There is no evidence that this fire was an act of sabotage. If the idea is plausible it is because there is ample evidence that Russia’s covert war in Europe is intensifying. In April alone a clutch of alleged pro-Russian saboteurs were detained across the continent. Germany arrested two German-Russian dual nationals on suspicion of plotting attacks on American military facilities and other targets on behalf of the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency. Poland arrested a man who was preparing to pass the GRU information on Rzeszow airport, the most important hub for military aid to Ukraine. Britain charged several men over an earlier arson attack in March on a Ukrainian-owned logistics firm in London whose Spanish depot was also targeted. The men are accused of aiding the Wagner Group, a mercenary group that has been active in Ukraine and is now under the GRU’s control. On May 8th Britain announced that in response to “malign activity” it was, among other steps, expelling Russia’s defence attaché, an “undeclared” GRU officer.
Georgia: Agents of foreign influence (Foreign Policy) The Georgian Parliament’s legal committee on Monday approved the third and final reading of a controversial foreign agents bill that has brought tens of thousands of Georgians to the streets in recent months to protest what they see as a Russian-style effort to chill free speech. Lawmakers took only 67 seconds to review and greenlight the legislation. Parliament is expected to pass the bill on Tuesday, and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has promised to back it. Opposition members, who have recently been denied access to Tbilisi’s main government building, did not attend Monday’s vote. Under the proposed legislation, civil society organizations and media outlets that receive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad must register as “agents of foreign influence.” In April, the ruling Georgian Dream party introduced the bill, which is modeled after a Russian foreign agents law that President Vladimir Putin enacted in 2012 and has since used to crush dissent. Mass demonstrations have erupted in the capital in response to the proposed law, marking some of the largest rallies in Georgia since it declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
India’s mammoth election is more than halfway done as millions begin voting in fourth round (AP) Millions of Indians across 96 constituencies began casting their ballots on Monday as the country’s gigantic, six-week-long election edges past its halfway mark. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third straight term with an eye on winning a supermajority in Parliament. Monday’s polling in the fourth round of multi-phase national elections across nine states and one union territory will be pivotal for Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, as it includes some of its strongholds in states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The staggered election will run until June 1 and nearly 970 million voters, more than 10% of the world’s population, will elect 543 members to the lower house of Parliament for five years. The votes are scheduled to be counted on June 4.
Malaysia’s appetite for oil and gas puts it on collision course with China (Washington Post) In the open sea off the coast of Malaysian Borneo, industrial rigs extract massive amounts of oil and gas that fuel the economy of Malaysia. Slightly beyond that, in waters Malaysia also considers its own, Chinese coast guard vessels and maritime militia boats maintain a near-constant presence, say Malaysian officials. For 10 years, their country has done little to contest them. But Malaysia is running out of oil and gas close to shore. Increasingly, it has to venture farther out to sea, raising the likelihood of direct confrontation with Chinese forces in the South China Sea. As tensions rise throughout the South China Sea, one of the world’s busiest and most contested bodies of water, energy demands are drawing Malaysia deeper into the fray and testing the country’s long-standing reluctance to antagonize China, according to interviews with more than two dozen government officials, diplomats, oil and gas executives and analysts in Malaysia.
More bodies found in Indonesia after flash floods killed dozens and submerged homes (AP) Rescuers recovered more bodies Monday after monsoon rains triggered flash floods on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island, bringing down torrents of cold lava and mud, leaving 41 people dead and another 17 missing. The heavy rains, along with a landslide of mud and cold lava from Mount Marapi, caused a river to breach its banks. The deluge tore through mountainside villages along four districts in West Sumatra province just before midnight Saturday. The floods swept away people and submerged nearly 200 houses and buildings.
Sleepy far-flung towns in the Philippines will host US forces returning to counter China threats (AP) The far-flung coastal town of Santa Ana in the northeastern tip of the Philippine mainland has long been known by tourists mostly for its beaches, waterfalls, fireflies and a few casinos. But that’s changing after the laid-back town of about 35,000 people, which still has no traffic light, became strategically important to America. The United States and the Philippines, which are longtime treaty allies, have identified Santa Ana in northern Cagayan province as one of nine mostly rural areas where rotating batches of American forces could encamp indefinitely and store their weapons and equipment on local military bases under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. Thousands of U.S. forces withdrew from two huge Navy and Air Force bases in the Philippines in the early 1990s at the end of the Cold War, ending nearly a century of American military presence in the country. In recent years, Washington has been reinforcing an arc of military alliances in Asia to counter an increasingly assertive China, which it now regards as its greatest security challenge.
The flow of food and other aid into Gaza has almost entirely dried up over the past week, the U.N. says. (NYT) The flow of aid into Gaza has almost entirely dried up in the past week, according to the United Nations, at a time when humanitarian agencies say the enclave needs a drastic increase in the amount of food, medicine and other goods to tackle a looming famine. Since the start of the war, most aid for Gaza has entered through two border crossings in the southern end of the territory. Israel shut down one of those, Kerem Shalom, after a Hamas rocket attack nearby killed four Israeli soldiers on May 5. The next day, Israel’s military seized and closed the second, in Rafah, on the Egyptian border, as part of what it called a “limited operation” against Hamas, bringing the flow of aid to a near-total stop.
Christian presence quickly dwindling in Gaza after seven months of war (Baptist Press) At Easter, Gaza Baptist Church leader Shady Al-Najjar described those sheltered in the church’s remnants as “too tired to suffer,” living “very difficult” and “useless” days. Al-Najjar has since fled to Egypt, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have set up shop in what remains of the church compound damaged in the war, former church pastor Hanna Massad told Baptist Press May 8. Al-Najjar is among many Christians who are fleeing Gaza with a renewed vigilance, International Christian Concern (ICC) said as the Israel-Hamas War enters its eighth month, speculating whether any Christians would remain. ICC estimated 25 percent to half of the 900 to 1,000 Christians who lived in Gaza before the war have fled, and that an additional 25 percent are applying to leave.
Hospitals overflowing in besieged Sudanese city as final battle looms (Washington Post) Dozens of people were killed in fighting in the Sudanese town of El Fashir this weekend, a civil society group said Sunday, raising fears for more than 2.5 million civilians trapped there as paramilitary forces encircle the city—the last one in the region outside their control. “Today was one of toughest days we have ever witnessed … The attack was from three directions,” wrote a member of the city’s Emergency Response Room in a message to The Washington Post. “The fighting was inside the populated areas, all kinds of weapons were used.” At least 38 civilians were killed, 189 injured and “many houses” destroyed, he said. “The hospital is calling for blood donations, they say the numbers of wounded are over their capacity.” Abdo Musa Hassan, the medical director of El Fashir South Hospital, said on Sunday he was too busy to give a death toll. But he said the hospital was already overwhelmed and patients were being treated on the ground, in a tent or on balconies. Medical resupplies had been cut off two weeks ago after the RSF seized control of the Melit area, which links El Fashir to the rest of Sudan, he said.

Dec. 17, 2015. U.B.C.S Sgt. Nikolai Zinoviev was sent out to [REDACTED] in the territory of Siberia, Russia. Upon arrival, Sgt. Zinoviev was informed of movement picked up via radar and accompanied a group of Umbrella trained soldiers to track down the source.
Once arriving at the location, Zinoviev was met with a deep gorge separating the flat snowcapped land from the dense forest. Zinoviev and his men rappeled down into the gorge, and were met with a gruesome sight; in the middle of the gorge laid a man, roughly late 20s/early 30s, lifeless.
-----------------------------------
The man bore B.S.A.A. standard issued clothes and gear. Both left and right legs had been taken out by a large caliber sniper rifle, lower right arm bore a open-compound fracture and left arm had been dismembered from the elbow down. A half-inch diameter hole is present in the man's head, most likely shot execution-style.
-----------------------------------
Sgt. Zinoviev recalls approaching the deceased and kneeling down to look for any identification when the eyes of the deceased man reacted in response to Zinoviev's flashlight.
According to Zinoviev, this was his cue to call in a helicopter and transport the barely conscious man back to base. His actions proved to be justified, as the man was miraculously saved by the men and women of Umbrella's medical team.
-----------------------------------
Umbrella's IT department recovered body cam footage from the man's gear, revealing the events leading up to his discovery.
The man is revealed to be Agent Leon S. Kennedy, a survivor of the 1998 Raccoon City Incident. The body cam footage shows Kennedy deployed on a "Mission" with B.S.A.A special forces, only to be shot down and executed by B.S.A.A Captian Chris Redfield in response to a "Betrayal".
----------------------------------
Umbrella's North American branch searched Kennedy's name through official databases, only to be met with the same line in every file; "Status: Deceased. Died in Combat."
We have reason to believe the B.S.A.A does not know that Agent Kennedy is in fact alive and highly aware of his situation.
Agent Kennedy expressed hatred and malice towards Captian Redfield and the B.S.A.A. and here at Umbrella, we plan to help him utilize that hatred. END FILE.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT ANY UNFILTERED CONTACT WITH THE SUBJECT STATED IN THE FILE ABOVE WILL RESULT IN AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR OF THE SUBJECT FOLLOWED BY THE RAPID DISMEMBERMENT AND CONSUMPTION OF THE OPPOSITE PARTY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Under the cut: Russia places a lifetime ban on 963 Americans (some of whom are already dead); Ukraine willing to open talks with Russia as long as Russia does not harm the defenders of the Azovstal steel factory; Russia to consider exchanging Mariupol defenders for Medvedchuk; Portugal will provide up to 250 million euros in financial support to Ukraine; A hotline has been set up for Russian soldiers who want to surrender to Ukraine; President Biden signed a bill providing another $40 billion in aid to Ukraine; Russia has cut gas supplies to Finland because Finland refuses to pay in rubles.
“Russia on Saturday released a list of 963 Americans it said were banned from entering the country, a punctuation of previously announced moves against president Joe Biden and other senior US officials.
The country, which has received global condemnation for its 24 February invasion of Ukraine, said it would continue to retaliate against what it called hostile US actions, Reuters reported.
The lifetime bans imposed on the Americans, including secretary of state Antony Blinken, US senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, defence secretary Lloyd Austin and CIA head William Burns, are largely symbolic.
They came on the same day Biden signed a support package providing nearly $40bn (£32bn) in aid for Ukraine.
Several on the Russian government’s list of undesirables wouldn’t have been able to make the trip anyway: they are already dead.
John McCain, the former Republican US presidential candidate and long-serving senator; Democrat Harry Reid, who served as senate majority leader from 2007 to 2015; and Orrin Hatch, whose 42 years in the chamber made him the longest-serving Republican senator in history; are all included.
McCain died in August 2018 at the age of 81; Reid died last December, aged 82; and Hatch died on 23 April at 88.”-via The Guardian

“Ukraine has suggested that it is willing to resume talks with Russia as Moscow claimed to have taken full control of the besieged city of Mariupol – its biggest prize since it invaded Ukraine in February.
Speaking to a television channel on Saturday, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said that “discussions between Ukraine and Russia will undoubtedly take place”.
“Under what format I don’t know – with intermediaries, without them, in a broader group, at the presidential level,” he added. “But the war will be bloody, there will be fighting and [it] will only definitively end through diplomacy.
“There are things that can only be reached at the negotiating table. We want everything to return [to as it was before] but Russia does not want that.”
However, he warned that the precondition for resuming negotiations was that Moscow did not kill Ukrainian troops who had been defending the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol. “The most important thing for me is to save the maximum number of people and soldiers,” he said.”-via The Guardian

According to AFP, Leonid Slutsky, a senior member of Russia’s negotiating team, the prisoners might be handed over if Ukraine gives up Viktor Medvedchuk, a wealthy businessman known as the “dark prince” of Ukraine politics who was detained last month for a second time.”-via The Guardian
