Hiding in the event of a School Shooting
Tumblr media
In this post I’m going to list what are the safest places to hide within a school if there isn’t a safe way outside or you are not safely in a classroom going through lockdown procedure. This is entirely hypothetical; you won't necessarily be involved but in the event of a school shooting it’s best to know how to stay safe just in case.
- A janitor's closet that can lock from the inside (preferably one that is not within the main parts of the school.)
- An elevator (make sure it’s closed and not moving.)
- Sub-rooms within room (storage rooms in music and art rooms most likely would be some of the safest.)
- Offices within the guidance/main office (navigating through the guidance/main office is times consuming, rarely have windows, and lock from the inside, making them fairly safe.)
- If you can, within a locker (an active shooter will most likely not look through all of the lockers in the school.)
- If there is a basement or area that only has pipes (it most likely won’t come into an active shooters mind to check, just avoid any electrical rooms/sections.)
- Small storage cabinets within an empty classroom (the shooter most likely would not enter an empty classroom to begin with and the cabinet would safely conceal you.)
- 1 person bathrooms (they typically have better locks on the doors of 1 person bathrooms and a shooter most likely wouldn’t think about them.)
** In the event that you can get outside GO OUTSIDE, and if there are no police outside already here are some helpful tips: **
- Hide behind cars (make sure you’re concealed from any windows.)
- Get away from the school grounds (nearby neighborhoods/businesses.)
- When running out/away from the school, run zigzags (this makes you a harder target.)
- Even if you don’t have a set destination, keep running until you feel as though there is absolutely no way you could be seen from the school.
!!!NOTIFY AUTHORITIES!!! Even if you think somebody already has, do it anyways. Also, if you saw/know the shooter give a description to the police (it could help them.)
Again, this is entirely hypothetical, but safety is key, and these are just some things that came to mind, feel free to add more.
I understand Mental Health is extremely important too, but should it ever get to there being an active shooter please read these, so you know what to do in that unfortunate situation.
Please be safe in schools.

From the article:
"Assistant Superintendent Bridgette Exman had a difficult task — How could she vet 42 books, several of which she hadn't read, to determine if they needed to be removed from Mason City's school libraries, as a new state law required?"
Did "read, or at least skim the books" come to mind? Did "check reviews of the book" come to mind? Did "ask colleagues who have read the book" come to mind?
No. Of course not.
Back to the article:
"Her conversations with colleagues across the state gave her an idea: Maybe AI could help."
"So the Mason City Community School District administrator took a list of 42 titles for review that the district had compiled from banned book lists around the U.S. and called up ChatGPT on her computer.
"Then she typed: 'Does [book] describe a sex act?' plugging in a book title, and waited for the answer."
No considerations of whether the "depictions of a sex act" were within a context that was appropriate, for example, in a sex education book, or in the case of Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, a non-graphic discussion of masturbation.
It's going to get worse from here.

So how do school transfers go? Not all schools have the same curriculum so do they decide their classes before the switch? Do they get assigned a new House with the first years or privately?
School transfers are generally very rare, but they do happen! Essentially, schools are preparing students for the LAMP and SALEM tests — standardized tests that allow the Department of Magical Education to ensure that basic magical knowledge is known across the country. These tests are only given for some of the "core" subjects — Charms and Magical Theory, Transfiguration, Potions, Astronomy, Herbology, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and History.
(I may not agree with it, but that's how it works. Just be glad the tests are given for each individual subject, so that at least those who score low in Transfiguration can still get an "Exemplary" in Charms.)
There's an interscholastic board that meets with members of the DME to discuss the best curriculums to make sure students can be successful in the standardized tests. Ultimately, it's up to the school and the individual teachers to determine what is best.
So with that explanation, basically, all "core" classes will be generally the same across all schools, but other electives probably won't be. You may just have to hope that whatever school you transfer to has the class you want.
However, all of the officially-recognized schools are boarding schools, so you would rarely need to transfer anyway, especially after your second or third year.
When that does happen, though, the transfer student will be Sorted with the first-year students.

Tiny rant about the American school system (and capitalism) from someone who missed several days of school
Tw for cursing because you know me
The American school system is so fucked. I missed a week of school for a concussion TWO WEEKS AGO and I'm still several days in debt for school work.
I have been working my ass off to catch up while still juggling concussion symptoms. I have a 50 in a class where I'm the only one who raises my hand and I got the highest grade on the midterm. How does that happen?
Instead of pushing students to learn the material they push productivity because of the way it's set up. Why does no one bat an eye at it?
And my father needs to hire someone to be a greeter at his job but they won't let him because they're not "doing anything". Yes. They are. They are greeting people, that is their job.
This country is so fucking dead set on production and it screws us over time and time again. I'm good at what I do, I'm not a shitty student and yet I'm failing one of my best classes.
On top of all of this we talk about how hard people are working, what they're producing, how much effort can we squeeze out of them before they collapse?
Why do we do this? A man at my father's job worked a double shift and died of a heart attack at 60 because he worked himself to death. And we're just okay with this?
Students are raised to work and do the same thing every day, that's how this system was designed. But it's bullshit. Today the school knew no one was going to show up today (I live in Pennsylvania and the Philly eagles lost the Superbowl last night) but fuck it everyone still needs to go in.
And now half the school is going to be behind.
I wish it was better. I wish I didn't half to cram to study for a test because I was too busy catching up and studying and doing the work I'm supposed to right now to be able to devote enough time for it.
Something's gotta change or we're going to work ourselves into early graves.

shaking crying screaming trembling school is Important school is Necessary school is fucking Government Mandated how are we letting this Happen how are more people not Talking About This
the goal is to literally prevent “leftist indoctrination” via public education how are we just fucking letting this happen?????
how are we letting the schools close down because they don’t have enough teachers???? how are people sitting complacently as public schools literally shut down across the country? how are we allowing teachers to teach in a 40:1 classroom???
how are we letting the requirements for teaching get so bad that no one wants to do it???
we are literally living in a dystopian society and nobody is doing anything about it

It's getting worse.
From the article:
"Having just finished a unit centered around protest art, I wanted to use this activity to connect students with books related to their chosen interests. As many students showed interest in LGBTQ+ rights, I included Juno Dawson’s nonfiction book This Book is Gay, which I found on the American Library Association’s Rainbow Project book list.
Our class book exploration happened on a Monday. By that Wednesday, I received an email from a parent who attached pictures of Dawson’s book asking me to justify my professional decisionmaking. Before contacting me, the parent had also sent these pictures and their own interpretation to a conservative local radio news station.
...Within a week, everything that I had known for 20 years was taken away from me. The school board approved my settlement release, and I was no longer employed as a teacher. Blindsided by these abrupt actions, many supportive parents, students, former students, and community members came forward to speak on my behalf at the school board’s community forum, which was held ahead of the board’s vote on my settlement release, but it was too late."
