everything i know about interview with the vampire (amc), from someone who has not watched interview with the vampire (amc) and has only consumed it via mutuals rb'ing gifsets but plans to watch it soon
this is my pre-gaming for watching this show. dipping a metaphorical toe into the fandom. i haven't read the books either.
there are 3 vampires: lestat, louis, and armand
armand's name may or may not be amadeo?
lestat and louis had a daughter named claudia
claudia was unhinged (which is fair. i would be too if i was stuck at age 15 forever)
claudia had a girlfriend named madeline
claudia and madeline died together (without even having kissed each other. true love? sapphic teenagerism? perhaps both)
claudia's death caused lestat and louis to break up after like a century of dating or something
armand killed claudia?
there was a play involved in claudia's death...? i am incredibly confused about this one
either it was a play or an execution
the love triangle seems convoluted
armand is in love with louis and lestat is also in love with louis and lestat & armand have definitely also fucked each other
louis should just get the hell out of there actually. free my boy louis !!!
the interview is being done by daniel molloy who is bi (?) and definitely into that kinky shit
daniel molloy fucked either louis or armand in his youth (during the 80s maybe?). possibly he fucked both. the human pet of the marriage
daniel's memories got messed with to... forget fucking the vampires? idk. p sure armand did it though
that seems to be the consensus for most things in this show
armand did it.
claudia died? armand did it. daniel's memory got wiped? armand did it. louis stubbed his toe? armand probably did it.
armand needs to be sent to vampire jail this guy's a menace
also lestat had a midlife crisis after louis left him for armand and became a rockstar. i hope they release his songs on spotify as marketing. i wanna hear it
BONUS: lestat's album flops? armand did it.
anyway now daniel is old and interviewing armand and louis in dubai?
armand eats suicidal ppl?
daniel causes armand and louis' marriage to fall through
that's louis' 2nd failed marriage
surprisingly not his fault either time i think
armand turns daniel into a vamp
this is signficiant because armand has never turned anyone into a vamp
armand is going to fuck that old man
that old man has kids apparently
and swore someone out on live tv
BONUS 2: daniel got turned into a vampire? armand did it.
seriously what the hell is armand's problem (said affectionately. i have a feeling he's gonna be my fav when i watch)
does lestat know daniel?
claudia may or may not return from the dead
if she does i'll blame that on armand too
is armand french or not? he lives in dubai. has a french accent (?) but also not.
lestat is french. louis and claudia are american.
surprisingly, the americans are the nicest of the bunch. rare american W
also can lestat fly? did he throw louis from like... a 4 story height? ppl on twitter were mad abt it like last year
are there any other characters in this show except the ones i've named. it's been 2 seasons. 6 characters cannot be all there is.

GBC - FM RADIO - PRESENTS
Fifty years ago, in 1974, the age at which a person attained their legal majority in France was lowered from 21 to 18. This changed the lives of millions of young people; for instance, they could now get married at 18 without parental consent.

Is it possible to be a happy gay Jew?
The theater lights are about to dim at Prayer for the French Republic, a new Broadway play that tracks the journey of a Jewish family in Paris from World War II through the 2017 French presidential election and the country’s rise in antisemitism. My companion leans over and asks earnestly, “Why do the Jews get a country and no other religion?” Playwright Joshua Harmon’s cast of characters debates the question for nearly three hours, as do we over post-show cocktails. I suggest, perhaps with a bit of earnest strain in my voice, that it might have something to do with millennia of persecution, from the biblical story of Exodus and the pogroms of the Russian Empire to a CNN poll indicating that a third of Europeans believe Jews use the Holocaust to advance their own positions or goals. But does that give the Jewish people a right to land also claimed sacred by Palestinians?  I was born and raised Jewish — jumping through the Bar Mitzvah and confirmation hoops and celebrating the High Holy Days with requisite challah and subsequent fasting. I visited Israel in 2015 for Tel Aviv Pride, thinking I’d feel an immediate kinship with my fellow Jews. I didn’t. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our daily newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. While I fell in love with the city, pulsating with the youthful sun-kissed glow of tech millennials, I didn’t feel any more “Jewish.” Upon my return home, I resided myself to the fact that my Russian and Polish ancestral roots — pale skin, receding hairline, perpetually nervous stomach — was my lot in life, and my desire for a larger sense of community needed to be cultivated from within.  Tel Aviv Pride. Photo by Matthew Wexler Though rarely asked before the horrific Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, and subsequent retaliation by Israeli forces that has left upward of 22,000 Palestinians dead, I would describe myself as Jewish but not Zionist. But it’s not that simple.  In a recent interview with the New York Times, Anti-Defamation League chief executive Jonathan Greenblatt said, “Zionism is fundamental to Judaism,” comparing it to the civil rights movement by suggesting that to be anti-Zionist but not antisemitic is the equivalent of saying, “I’m against the civil rights movement, but I’m also against racism.” The article’s author, Charles M. Blow, further dismantles the argument, questioning, “There are several forms of Zionism, and people in these debates rarely seem to be explicit about which form they are for or against. Political Zionism? Cultural Zionism? Religious Zionism? Some combination of them? Does it matter?” I ask myself the same questions regarding my gay identity. Am I politically queer? Culturally queer?  In a recent interview with LGBTQ Nation, out actor Danny Kornfeld told me, “One of the things I love about the Jewish religion is the encouragement to ask questions, to say, ‘Why is this?’” Related: These singers barely survived WW II. Their story is an LGBTQ+ wake-up call. Barry Manilow’s “Harmony” unearths the story of a musical group impacted by Hitler’s Germany. Marginalized communities see the terrifying connection. So I’m asking why.  On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, I’m asking how this near extermination came to be. And January 29, the anniversary of the Bear River Massacre that left hundreds of Native Americans. And June 12, when Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured more than 50 at Pulse Nightclub. And on September 11, when I watched the plumes of smoke and disintegrated souls hover above lower Manhattan from my apartment window.  Depending on the algorithms of one’s digital search history, the day’s social media feed may be flooded with Holocaust-related content, or scrolling might look like any other, filled with reels and TikToks and stitches and tweets and posts. Made-up words and content that often pretends to be rooted in reality.… http://dlvr.it/T1yPlB

JEWISH TERRORISM & GENOCIDE OF PALESTINIANS IN THE OCCUPIED HOLY HAND SINCE 1948, AND STILL CONTINUING BY KILLING OF HELPLESS & INNOCENT CHILDREN, WOMEN AND OLD PEOPLE UNDER THE EYES OF IMPOTENT WORLD LEADERS, GOD FORBID, AMEN.
July 3, 2014, Rabbi Noam Perel, Head of the largest Orthodox Judaic youth movement, B’nei Akiva, calls for indiscriminate murder:
July 4, 2014, Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai, Minsiter for Strategic Threats Moshe Ya’alon, and Chief of Israeli Central Command Major General Avi Mizrahi honor the racist Rabbi Dov Lior who endorsed the manual on killing gentiles, Torat Hamalech.

July 14, 2014, Israeli Member of the Knesset for the “Jewish Home” party (and Justice  Minister since 2015) Ayelet Shaked stated that all Palestinian mothers should be killed so they do not raise any more “little snakes.”
“On Monday [June 30, 2014] Shaked quoted this on her Facebook page: ‘Behind every terrorist stand dozens of men and women, without whom he could not engage in terrorism. They are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their heads. Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Otherwise, more little snakes will be raised there.’
‘They have to die and their houses should be demolished so that they cannot bear any more terrorists,’ said Shaked. Standing behind the operations on Gaza, ‘they are all our enemies and their blood should be on our hands. This also applies to the mothers of the dead terrorists,’ Shaked added.
A day before Palestinian teenager Muhammad Abu Khudair was kidnapped and burned alive [above] allegedly by six Israeli Jewish youths, Shaked published on Facebook a call for genocide of the Palestinians

Anatomy of a Scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The two movies I chose to analyze are a comedy and a drama. The first movie I analyzed is the 2003 comedy film Lost in Translation. The movie starts with the American actor Bob Harris in a car. He went to Tokyo, Japan, to shoot a Japanese Whiskey commercial. Bob is an aging movie star who was very popular and famous in his youth. Then, there is Charlotte, who is a newlywed. She is also accompanying her husband, a celebrity photographer, to Tokyo, Japan. They are strangers who meet at a bar at the hotel where they are both staying. They form an emotional connection as they seem to have marriage issues. Throughout the movie, they spend much time together, going to bars, restaurants, karaoke, etc. In the end, when they say goodbye, Bob stops the car to look for Charlotte again and whispers something to her in her ear. After that, they kiss for the first and final time, leaving the viewers in suspense since it is not said what he whispered to her. The movie was fast-paced but was not rushed.
The second movie I analyzed is the 1942 drama film Casablanca. The movie takes place in December of 1941, in the refugee town Casablanca, where people go there to be safe and protected. It is set during World War II. Rick Blaine, one of the main protagonists, owns a nightclub in this town. French and Germain officials, including people seeking refuge in the U.S., go to his nightclub. Rick has in possession letters that guarantee safe passage to the U.S., and his former lover Ilsa and her husband Victor need the letters to go to America to continue their work. However, Rick refuses to give them the letters or sell them. Ilsa tries to make him believe that she still loves Rick to get the letters. In the end, Rick puts Ilsa and her husband on a plane so they can leave Casablanca, and with a friend, Rick will go to a French colony in Africa. The scene I chose to analyze from this film is when Ilsa tells Rick she loves him. It is a dramatic scene because of the raw emotions Ilsa is portraying to the audience. The background music gives it the touch to make it more dramatic, and then she threatens Rick with a gun to get the letters. During the scene, many close-up shots show more of the characters' emotions and increase the drama and suspense. It does a great job at attracting the viewers.

Rain Fontanilla-Sy is the Lieutenant and OIC of Narcotics Division, hailed as the most powerful woman in the Police Force. She heads the Task Force Padrino which is a joint force between DEA and the Philippine Police. It is an effort to capture multinational drug crime syndicate that has main operations in the Philippines. They are mixed of Latin Americans, Northern Americans, and Asians.
Personality
Her leadership skills is lauded. Soft spoken with her children but tough in the workplace. Although considers herself lawful, she engages unethical tactics like giving deals, and manipulation when needed. She is also appreciated for her beauty and seemingly eternal youth, looking like 20 something. She uses this and her charm to sway her bosses.
She does not think twice about using violence when needed.

She is multilingual as requirement in standard education in the Philippines. She can speak English, Tagalog, Chinese, Spanish and some local languages. Also in additional, German,Japanese, and French. She is a black belter in Aikido, and a really good boxer. Skilled also in swordsmanship especially Katana. She relies mostly in close combat than guns.
She uses a stun gun but later used real guns.
Relationship
She's a widow, her husband, a Fil-Chinese Economics professor, died of 35 at the Plaza Miranda bombing during a student protest in 1980. She is at that time 6 months pregnant with their last child and son, Anton.
7 years later, after being teemed up with the DEA, she meets Edward Heath whom she resented at first due to his misogynistic remarks. They keep on arguing until when Arstrom Sanchez, Rain's predecessor at Violent Crimes died together with another DEA agent, Rockwell, Rain approached Ed. She offered that they work together surreptitiously to remove biases and corruption hindering their anti drug operation success. Ed agreed to trade Intel with her and be her eyes and ears inside the embassy.
When confronted about Ed and Rain's unusal unofficial meetings, Ed lied about having an affair with Rain. In which at that time, he is going through a divorce with his wife, Sara.
Rain was asked too but gave vague answers but still confirming Ed's lie.
Ed finds himself attracted to Rain and he tells it to her while drubk as he attempted to kiss her but Rain refuses saying she can't handle having a relationship.
Ed goes back to the states for the extradition of Zhang Wen Xi, and Rain comes along as a supporting witness.
While in America, Rain and Ed has gotten closer.
Eventually, Rain and Ed became sexually involved as they do not want to commit in serious relationships first.
The task force Padrino was abolished when Zhang, Licauco and Valores were captured. The DEA left except for Ed who still oversees the anti drug operations in Asia.
Ed is divorced and has sought chances for romance with Rain.
Rain, being ready, agreed. Ed has become closer with Rain's kids, too, especially finding himself fond of Anton. During a beach vacation with Rain's family, he proposes marriage. Rain accepts.
They got married eventually. Ed stayed in the Philippines permanently and became a permanent official for the Americans but won't give up his American citizenship. Eventually being transferred to the Anti-Terrorism when Islamic terrorism was on the rise.
They didn't produce any children.
Original story
Rain Fontanilla-Sy or Rain Fontanilla Heath is a real person but her real name is Irianne and her nickname is Rain. She was one of the most influential woman in Philippine history, having the highest position in the Department of Defense as a Secretary appointed by President Luno in 2005.
She is in the late 1980s and early 90s criticized and sibject d to senate trial avout her unethical methods such as extrajudicial killing and human rights violations. Though she admitted on the stand, she was not suspended nor punished as she was very effective in the war of drugs. So removing her will be a death blow.
She is also criticized of her marriage to an American citizen and official. Edward Heath never surrendered his American citizenship to remain a government official. Many believe it could be a conflict of interest especially in her appointment in the Defense Department.
Her second husband, Ed Heath, who was 10 years older than her died in 2016 after 22 years of marriage.
Her twin daughters, Ji-Xin and Chisana, are Sepak Takraw champion player and Women's football professional player, respectively. Her son, Anton, is a nuclear engineer. In the series, it is shown that they didn't have children but Rain actually gave birth in 1992, to a boy, Ritter Heath who is currently living privately.

Flappers:
Young ladies with short hair, cigarettes dangling from their painted lips, and dancing to a live jazz band experimented with their newfound liberties defined flappers in the roaring twenties. The flapper is the most iconic cultural icon of the 1920s. A young woman with a short "bob" hairdo and a cigarette dangling from her painted lips dances to the sounds of a live jazz band. Flappers revelled in the new freedoms brought about by the end of World War I and the beginning of a new period of wealth, urbanisation, and consumerism. The decade began with the enactment of the 19th Amendment, which granted white women the right to vote. Women also increased their labor-force participation, actively engaged in the nation's emerging mass consumer culture, and enjoyed greater personal independence. Despite the exhilarating freedoms epitomised by the flapper, true liberty and equality for women remained elusive in the 1920s, and it would be left to subsequent generations of women to fully benefit from the social transformations wrought by the decade. The precise origins of the term "flapper" are unclear. While the actual origin of the term "flapper" is uncertain, it is said to have originated in Britain before to World War I, when it was used to characterise gawky young adolescent ladies. Following the war, the term became synonymous with the new generation of 1920s women who wore skirts that skimmed their knees, smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol while dancing in jazz clubs, constantly surrounded by fawning male suitors.
Tumblr media
youtube
Flappers were identified by their clothing, dancing, and conversation. According to Joshua M. Zeitz in Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern, flapper fashion would not have been complete without the creeping hemline, which reached a frightening 14 inches above the ground by 1925 or 1936. The scandalous appearance was complemented with sheer stockings, which were occasionally rolled below the knees. Flappers wore their skirts shorter to show off their legs and ankles, but also to dance. They were especially fond of the Charleston, a 1920s dance fad that included waving arms and fast-moving feet and was pioneered by African Americans, initially in the South and then in Harlem. Dancing was difficult in traditional women's attire, not only because of lengthy gowns, but also because of traditional corsets, which firmly constricted a woman's abdomen and highlighted her waist. Around 1923, French designer Coco Chanel popularised the "garçonne style," which included not just high hemlines but also lowered or nonexistent waistlines and straight, sleeveless shirts. This innovative style allowed ladies to dance freely by using lighter and more flexible undergarments that generated a straight, slender profile. Flappers were defined not only by their clothing, but also by their demeanour and attitude. Flappers were youthful, fast-moving, quick-talking, daring, and unconcerned with prior social conventions or taboos. They smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol, drove vehicles, and kissed and "petted" various guys.
Tumblr media
youtube
The flapper emerged from a changing American landscape. For the first time in the country's history, more Americans (51 percent) lived in cities rather than in rural areas by 1920. As a result of the country's urbanisation and economic expansion, an increasing number of women were entering the labour market. By 1929, more than a quarter of all women, and more than half of unmarried women, were gainfully working. However, for the most part, the growth in working women did not pose a threat to established gender norms. Domestic servants made up over one-third of all working women in the 1920s, with the remainder working as clerical employees, manufacturing workers, retail clerks, and other "feminised" professions. Even trailblazing female politicians encountered gender-based obstacles: Most female officeholders focused on "women's concerns," preventing them from gaining too much authority inside their political parties. It was progress, though, with a few women elected to the United States House of Representatives (but none to the Senate) and many more serving at the state and municipal levels. Not only were women hitting a glass barrier in terms of career opportunities, but workplace discrimination and income inequalities were also prevalent throughout the '20s. According to Gail Collins' book America's Women, the average weekly pay for males in 1927 was $29.35, but it was just $17.34 for women. Although their incomes did not match those of their male counterparts, working women utilised their purchasing power to participate in the nation's emerging mass consumer culture. "Certainly, the character of household life changes for metropolitan women in the '20s," Dumenil adds. Nearly two-thirds of American houses had electricity by 1927, and new consumer items such as the washing machine, refrigerator, and vacuum cleaner were transforming housework and family life. Many of the new items, such as domestic appliances, apparel, and cosmetics, were aimed primarily towards women.

I started to type this in French four times already ugh. Under a cut because I couldn't explain my existential crisis in a concise manner.
I guess, seeing your fine artwork had me flash back to my youth, thoughts I had long forgotten resurfacing. So I went and re-read and re-watch some stuff and I realized Jolly Jumper is fucking queer coded. Well, I don't know about the newer stuff, but I pulled up the 1984/bédés stuff and yeah.
Like, I've always felt that Lucky Luke had huge bisexual vibes, even if I didn't have the words to explain it. Luke's softness and mannerism is so different from the "american cowboys" I saw in other media. I did some poking around and there's this german artist Ralf König that talks about queerness in relation to Lucky Luke and it was weirdly validating and emotional.
But watching Jolly Jumper as an adult hit very very differently. His humour lands much better now than from what I remember from my childhood (Rantanplan was my fav it was no contest). I hadn't really kept up with this franchise after I 'grew up' out of it sometimes in the early 2000's.
Revisiting, I was floored. What a sassy horse lmao. Also, Joe wants to kiss Luke so badly it hurts.
So my thoughts were: holy shit, I never connected the dots but now it's so obvious. None of that would have happened without this art, so thank you!!!
Tumblr media
Totally not very desperately trying to figure out what Jolly would look like as a human.
He has a bit of a sophisticated way of talking so I think he would wear nicer clothes whenever possible. Color scheme red because his saddle cloth is red with black on it, but also a lot of white/ bright grey for is fur.

I’ve mentioned before being forced! by The Algorithm to listen to synthwave, of which my favourite is Nina’s Synthian. As someone who is philosophically committed to never experiencing an emotion that can’t be sublimated, I am predictably into expressing melancholy through a hyper-precise artificial re-creation.
In the retro-fastidiousness synthpop mode, I’ve also been enjoying Chromatics and Wolfclub, while in the more pop-y synth-inspired mode, Carla Wehbe’s “Don’t tell Me” is particularly good, along withEden XO’s “American Youth French Kissing” and Kit Major’s “Miss Sixteen”. Ultraflex shift a bit more into Sally Shapiro italo territory.

April 23, 2014, Israeli settlers release wild pigs on Palestinian farms
IMEMC 21 Apr by Chris Carlson — Palestinian farmers in the Salfit district appealed all to Palestinian and international bodies to stop the continued destruction of their crops caused by the Israeli pigs [wild boars] in the district. Farmers said, “We have encountered heavy losses in our wheat and barley crops, where the pigs destroyed them completely.” They added, “We tried to get rid of the pigs with all available ways but we have failed,” pointing out that the only way is to shoot them; which is difficult due to the miltary’s monitoring towers and checkpoints in the area. Furthermore, according to Al Ray, Palestinian researcher Khaled Maali explained that the settlers found launching wild pigs toward the Palestinian farmlands was the best effective way to fight the Palestinian farmers without significant cost. paradiso - part one
Tumblr media
Pairing: young!Javier x fem!reader
Part ONE (of 5)
Rating: Teen
Summary: This will be a 5+1, short but sweet fic about you and Javi. He's an American student and you're an Italian heiress - your love is young, fun, and bittersweet. Lots of romance and fluff ahead.
Warnings: Smoking, tooth-rotting fluff, mention of alcohol
Word count: 1.8k
A/N: I needed something to distract me from finals week, so you all get this. :) I saw a tiktok about Pedro in like an old-money Italian aesthetic and the idea of it just would not leave me alone! Very much my ideal romance situation tbh. Anyways enjoy, the next part is partly written but no promises on when it'll be up. As always, no use of Y/N and please do lmk what you think! :)
The first time you kissed him, you could taste the champagne he’d had earlier that night. Not enough to get drunk, or even really buzzed, but enough to leave his lips and tongue flavorful under your own.
His strong hand was wrapped around your waist, keeping you close, fingers steady over the thin fabric of your dress. Javi held you like this often - from lunches on your parents’ boat to strolling casually through the piazza, he had definitely adopted the Italian tendency to show public affection through touch. All your male friends here do it, but with him it’s different.
Javi is so very different.
Tonight he looks even more like a dashing prince than usual. His dark hair is perfectly messy and his white shirt is unbuttoned just enough, his leather shoes shiny and understated. You’d smiled when you noticed his shoes - they’re the first nice pair he’d been able to afford while living here.
You met him four months ago, when spring was ending and summer soon approaching. He arrived early for his studies abroad, an American political sciences major in the heart of Florence.
Hardly a penny to his name, on a meal plan and receiving a generous scholarship or two, Javi had no business flirting with you. He did it anyway, and you found yourself charmed by his roguish smile and kind eyes. He paid for your gelato, like a typical American gentleman would, and bought some of his own. He ordered the same flavors as you. He hasn’t tried anything different since.
As you kiss him, the sea wind sweeps over the two of you on the secluded terrace where you stand, causing goosebumps to flutter over your skin. You shiver, pressing closer to Javi’s warmth.
He breaks the kiss, looking down at you with a concerned crease between his brows.
“You cold?” he asks, voice rough and deep in a way you don't recognize.
You can’t help but smile at him. He’s so handsome, looking at you like this. Holding you close. “Only a little. You’re warm enough for both of us.”
“This dress,” he murmurs, eyes flitting down to look at your lips. His fingers toy with your dress’s low backline where his hand rests beneath your shoulder blades. “No wonder you’re chilly.”
When your parents first met Javi, they were skeptical. They thought he was taking advantage of you, that he’d insert himself into your life for your wealth and your name.
He’d spent the past four months convincing them otherwise. Now your mother loves him and your father smiles at his jokes, which is something that can’t be said for many people. You can count on one hand the number of people who have made your father laugh, and Javi’s one of them.
He wants to join the FBI, or the CIA. One of the two, you could never get the acronyms straight. He told you about how there’s rigorous training, both physical and professional, to even be considered. Javi keeps himself in good shape for this reason, though your cook’s fine meals have added a bit of softness to his midsection. He complains about it, but you secretly love it. He’s so strong and disciplined that it’s lovely to see just a hint of vice in his features.
You run a hand up his bicep, feeling the muscles that he keeps hidden beneath his shirt.
“Do you like it?” you ask demurely. You bought the dress last week with the express purpose of looking good for him.
Javi takes his hand from your hip and places it on your cheek, his touch tender and gentle.
“You always look beautiful. Especially tonight.”
The party’s for one of your friends from school. She’s moving to the UK to continue her studies and this is her last big hurrah. You’d been invited, with the option for a plus-one, and Javi was the obvious choice.
You’d felt the gazes of the girls in attendance on you and Javi when you both arrived. He’s a few years older than you are, but you know they’re looking because they’ve never seen him before. He’s not part of the rotation of wealthy Florentine boys they all seem to cycle through like clockwork. He’s a stranger, and most importantly, he’s got you on his arm.
The music plays in the distance. Voices float up through the evening air, laughing and exuberant.
You lean into his touch, eyes closing against the comfort you feel with your cheek in his palm.
This must be what heaven feels like.
Javi had taken it slow with you. He earned your friendship before anything else, chatting with you about life and TV and his favorite sports teams back home. He told you about Texas, though when you expressed a desire to visit his hometown, he’d scoffed, calling the place a ‘shithole’.
You still want to visit, someday. Shithole or not.
Perhaps your friendship was the reason things did not progress very quickly between you. You knew he found you attractive and you most definitely felt the same, but for the longest time it just didn’t feel right to try and move things along.
There’d be moments, however, when you wished so desperately that he was yours it almost physically hurt.
One such moment was late one afternoon, on the deck of your family boat. You’d gotten out of the water first and you stood there, watching, as he emerged from the waves in his short swim trunks, the synthetic material clinging to his body ever so perfectly.
You’d seen the outline of… well. You’d seen the outline of something big, something that made you blush and look away, distracting yourself with drying your hair.
Another of these moments was an unremarkable Friday morning spent in one of your favorite bookshops, not too far from Javi's student apartment. You'd been browsing the shelves as he stood outside to smoke. Before long, you found a few paperbacks that looked interesting, and you paid for them with a kind smile to the elderly gentleman working at the register.
You'd exited with a "grazie!" and that's when you'd noticed Javi was speaking to someone, eyes bright and posture relaxed as he exhaled smoke through his nose.
He smiled at you the moment you exited the shop, and as you walked over, you listened to their conversation.
Javi was speaking to the stranger in Spanish. You recognized the sound of it, but could not understand it, having learned English and French and Arabic in your youth.
The other man, older with a salt-and-pepper beard, glanced over to you and then back at Javi. You stood beside your friend, books tucked safely under your arm.
"¿Esta es tu novia, Javier?"
The words caused Javi to blush, but he covered it by taking a drag from his cigarette.
"No, aún no. Algún día pronto."
It was the first time you'd heard him speak Spanish. The words rolled off his tongue with such ease that you couldn't help but glance up at him, intrigued by this new lilt to his voice. You wanted to hear more of it.
Javi snaked his hand around your back to your hip, fingers tucking into the belt loops on your jeans, and he pulled you into his side. You went easily, the motion a familiar one.
But something about hearing him converse in his first language, combined with the feeling of his firm hand on your hip, made something inside your heart shift. It was a small moment, miniscule in the grand order of things. It meant so very much to you.
Javi’s compliment makes you smile softly, his gaze full of such tenderness that it makes your heart ache. You put a hand on his chest, your cool palm a stark contrast to his furnace of a pectoral.
“You don’t look too bad yourself, Peña.”
He chuckles, smiling, his breath a short burst across your face that makes your hair flutter.
Javi's always been good at avoiding praise. "I look the same as always, hermosa."
You run a hand up his shoulder and neck to tangle in his dark curls, warm at the base of his skull. He smells like the cologne you'd helped him pick out - something from a small shop he'd never have found on his own, something woody and deep and fragrant. It was mostly selfish, that shopping trip, because all it makes you want to do is bury your nose in the collar of his shirt where the aroma is strongest. You think you could breathe in that scent for the rest of your life and never get tired of it.
"Exactly," you murmur, glancing over his shoulder at the glittering coastline and then back up to him. "You always look handsome."
It's impossible for him to hide his blush this close. "Yeah?" he asks, like he doesn't believe you. Like he wants to hear you say it again.
"Yes. Even when you wear those ugly sports shirts.”
He makes a face like he’s offended, and you laugh. “Hey, you can never go wrong with a Cowboys jersey.”
You smile and lean up to press a kiss to the corner of his mouth. It seems as though now that you’ve started, you’re trying to make up for all the times you haven’t kissed him.
Javi goes quiet, looking at you like you’re the most beautiful girl in the world. You decide to open your heart just a bit more to him - it must be in the air, because something about the night is making your want of him that much stronger.
“I thought you were handsome the moment I saw you in the gelato shop," you tell him, thinking back on that day.
Usually Americans tended to annoy you, never conscious of local etiquette and manners, always too loud and disruptive - but Javi was so sweet. His brown eyes had glimmered at you like jewels, his lips quirked in a smile that gave life to a thousand butterflies in your stomach.
He'd sat with you for over an hour, listening to you like he'd known you your whole life. The warm sun gave his skin a glow that you remember clearly to this day. Long after you both had finished your food, he was there, as if he had all the time in the world for you.
Javi presses another soft kiss to your lips, slow and mesmerizing, before drawing back again.
"You looked so beautiful," he murmurs, nose brushing against yours. "I never thought you'd give me the time of day."
You can't help but smile. "I knew I'd regret it if I didn't."
It feels like the two of you are on that balcony for the whole of the evening, the blissful joy of finally admitting your feelings - and having them reflected like a mirror in him - taking precedence over all the celebrating going on below you.
Eventually, however, you must return. You walk back to the crowd and one of your good friends gives you a look like she knows exactly where you just were. A blush rises to your cheeks, but when Javi loops a casual, more-than-friendly arm around your waist, you find you don't care all that much about what your friends think.
