Jester Hairston

Jester Joseph Hairston (July 9, 1901 – January 18, 2000) was an American composer, songwriter, arranger, choral conductor and actor. He was regarded as a leading expert on black spirituals and choral music. His notable compositions include "Amen," a gospel-tinged theme from the film Lilies of the Field and a 1964 hit for the Impressions, and the Christmas song "Mary's Boy Child."
Hairston was born in Belews Creek, a rural community on the border of Stokes, Forsyth, Rockingham and Guilford counties in North Carolina. His grandparents had been slaves. At an early age, he and his family moved to Homestead, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh, where he graduated from high school in 1921. Hairston was very young when his father was killed in a job-related accident. Hairston was raised by his grandmother while his mother worked. Hairston heard his grandmother and her friends talking and singing about plantation life and became determined to preserve this history through music.
Hairston initially majored in landscape architecture at Massachusetts Agricultural College in the 1920s. He became involved in various church choirs and choral groups, and accompanist Anna Laura Kidder saw his potential and became his benefactor. Kidder offered Hairston financial assistance to study music at Tufts University. from which he graduated in 1929. He was one of the first black students admitted to Tufts. Later he studied music at the Juilliard School.
Hairston pledged the Chi chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity in 1925. He worked as a choir conductor in the early stages of his career. His work with choirs on Broadway eventually led to singing and acting parts in plays, films, radio programs and television shows.
Hairston sang with the Hall Johnson Choir in Harlem for a time but was nearly fired from the all-black choir because he had difficulty with the rural dialects that were used in some of the songs. He had to shed his Boston accent and relearn the country speech of his parents and grandparents. Johnson had told him: "We're singing ain't and cain't and you're singing shahn't and cahn't and they don't mix in a spiritual." The choir performed in many Broadway shows, including The Green Pastures. In 1936, the choir was asked to visit Hollywood to sing for the film The Green Pastures. Russian composer Dimitri Tiomkin heard Hairston and invited him to what would become a 30-year collaboration in which Hairston arranged and collected music for films. In 1939, Hairston married Margaret Swanigan. He wrote and arranged spirituals for Hollywood films as well as for high school and college choirs around the country.
Hairston wrote the song "Mary's Boy Child" in 1956. He also arranged the song "Amen", which he dubbed for the Sidney Poitier film Lilies of the Field, and arranged traditional Negro spirituals.[16] Most of Hairston's film work was in the field of composing, arranging and choral conducting. He also acted in more than 20 films, mostly in small roles, some uncredited. Hairston starred in John Wayne's The Alamo (1960), in which he portrayed "Jethro," a slave owned by Jim Bowie. In 1962’s To Kill a Mockingbird Hairston portrayed the uncredited role of the father of accused rapist Tom Robinson. In 1967’s In the Heat of the Night, Hairston portrayed the butler of a wealthy racist being investigated for murder. In both films, Hairston shot scenes along side men who won an Academy Award for Best Actor in those respective films for portraying white Southerners navigating their jobs through a racially divided culture.
In 1961, the U.S. State Department appointed Hairston as Goodwill Ambassador. He traveled all over the world teaching and performing the folk music of the slaves. In the 1960s, he held choral festivals with public high-school choirs, introducing them to Negro spiritual music, and sometimes led several hundred students in community performances. His banter about the history of the songs along with his engaging personality and sense of humor endeared him to many students.
During his nationwide travels, Hairston checked local phone books for other Hairstons and reunited many people on his family tree, both black and white. He composed more than 300 spirituals. He was the recipient of many honorary doctorates, including a doctorate from the University of Massachusetts in 1972 and a doctorate in music from Tufts in 1977.
In his later years, Hairston served as a cultural ambassador for American music, traveling to numerous countries with choral groups that he had assembled. In 1985, he took the Jester Hairston Chorale, a multiracial group, to sing in China at a time when foreign visitors would rarely appear there.
Hairston died in Los Angeles of natural causes in 2000 at age 98. For his contribution to the television industry, Hairston has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame located at 6201 Hollywood Boulevard. He is interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California.

The Post-Eurovision ranking and comments from an American that nobody asked for:
1. Switzerland 🇨🇭 Gjon’s Tears - Tout l’univers: I absolutely was enamored by this song, its artistry, and the artist. He can really sing and one of my early favorites from this year. So happy for him to get in the top 3 bc it was well deserved. 100/10
2. Italy 🇮🇹 Måneskin - Zitti e Buoni: Deserved winners. As queer as you can get and I am here for it. Another early favorite of mine constantly fighting with Switzerland for the top spot. 100/10
3. Iceland 🇮🇸 Dadi og Gagnamagnid - 10 Years: A beautiful song dedicated to his wife and deserved Top 5 for sure. Last year’s song would have won hands down so I’m bummed he couldn’t win the first one for Iceland but brilliant song and I hope the group stays together to produce more music. 99/10
4. Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Victoria - Growing Up Is Getting Old: Eurovision fandom will forever say Imaginary Friend or Ugly Cry was the better song to send, but I don’t think they would have won the contest either. This year was strong, and I personally think Growing Up was a perfect choice from Victoria. It deserved top 10 so I was pissed that it came 11th on the night and received so few televotes. 97/10
5. Ukraine 🇺🇦 Go_A - SHUM: To all y’all who said this wouldn’t qualify when the new version came out, eat those words hun. This was a masterpiece, and the live performances just elevated it further. Honestly, Kateryna could step on me, and I would let her. Who doesn’t love an ethnic modern fusion rave? 95/10
6. Serbia 🇷🇸 Hurricane - Loco Loco: I honestly have to say when it came out, it was never breaking my top 20, but here we are. This group of gals is amazing. The choreo, hairography, and the still great vocals won my gay ass over. They served and deserved top 10 in my eye. 90/10
7. Greece 🇬🇷 Stefania - Last Dance: Much like Serbia, I kinda dismissed this as a top 10 song at first, but after many listens and then the live shows, it was one of the best songs this year. Last year’s song was nowhere near a qualifier for me, and then I thought they had a good chance of being top 5 this year. Amazing improvement and can’t wait to see what comes next from Stefania. 80/10
8. Malta 🇲🇹 Destiny - Je me casse: Not going to lie, the studio definitely did more for me. It was up with Italy and Switzerland for winner contention until the live shows. Don’t get me wrong, Destiny is still amazing live, and the song is a deserved top 5 song. However, the costume and staging just really didn’t add to the song and I think detracted a bit. Her song last year was also much better in my opinion. 75/10
9. San Marino 🇸🇲 Senhit ft Flo Rida - Adrenalina: Oh boy this was a party, and the fact Flo Rida actually was there made it even better. The staging and costuming was absolutely camp, and I was here for it. This was definitely not underrated by fans beforehand, but the jury and televote were beyond robberies in my opinion. Granted I know the backing vocals were carrying the chorus a lot so in terms of vocals, I can see where this song got dinged, but this should have been San Marino’s best ever result at Eurovision, and it wasn’t so I’m mad. 60/10
10. France 🇫🇷 Barbara Pravi - Voila: The new Edith Piaf and probably one of the most representative of the country’s culture for a song. A definite deserved runner up on the night but for me 10th place. I loved the staging, the costume, the emotions. It was all right for Eurovision and me. 50/10
11. Cyprus 🇨🇾 Elena Tsingarou - El Diablo: Come through Cyprus with another female pop banger. I’d say if the formula ain’t broke don’t fix it, but wasn’t really enough to crack top 10 this year. Another early favorite of mine this year but soon got eclipsed. Still going to be listening to El Diablo for a while. 49/10
12. Russia 🇷🇺 Manizha - Russian Woman: I can’t lie that at first, this song was absolutely trash to me but quickly rose the ranks and became one of my faves. Same thing happened last year with Uno. We also always love a good female empowerment moment with the native language thrown in. Manizha is a girlboss without the gaslighting and a true queen. Deserved top 10 the night of. 40/10
13. Lithuania 🇱🇹 The Roop - Discoteque: An earworm for first listen and was top 10 for a while for me but like Cyprus, lost out to some others. No doubt this is a deserved top 10 the night of. 35/10
14. Croatia 🇭🇷 Albina - Tick Tock: The first song to get me pressed on it’s placement. Deserved to be in the final over both Israel and Norway (please come for me I don’t care). They freakin rocked that stage during the semis and the song is absolutely a bop. Albina deserved better. 30/10
15. Sweden 🇸🇪 Tusse - Voices: A beautiful song by an amazing artist. Sure the lyrics were a bit cliche Eurovision but guess what...it’s Eurovision. I can hear the voices. Keep carrying on Tusse. 25/10
16. Albania 🇦🇱 Anxehla Peristeri - Karma: This song grew on me a lot. I liked it but wasn’t a don’t skip for a while on my playlist. The live performance changed it for me. She slayed and the staging was everything for Miss Thing. Also native language brownie points. 24/10
17. Finland 🇫🇮 Blind Channel - Darkside: Before you come for me for having this at 17th, keep reading. I’m not a big fan of the lyrics but the song is absolutely fantastic. This style of music isn’t something I pull out on a playlist often, but I had my middle fingers up for this one (and pointed at Germany but we’ll discuss later). Deserved top 10 as they rocked it on stage. 20/10
18. The Netherlands 🇳🇱 Jeangu Macrooy - Birth of a New Age: I absolutely do not understand the hate for this song. I was also a huge fan of Grow last year so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised for being generally alone again. The fact it got 0 points in the televote and only 11 in the jury is not surprising but extremely disappointing to me. This song is a masterpiece much like the ones ranked above it. Jeangu, you are amazing and deserved so much better than this. 20/10
19. Belgium 🇧🇪 Hooverphonic - The Wrong Place: Fantastic song but fantastic artists. Always here for a dark pop moment. Gonna go get my own Johnny Cash T-shirt. 15/10
20. Spain 🇪🇸 Blas Cantó - Voy a Quedarme: Such a heartfelt ballad. I enjoyed it quite a bit and don’t understand the hate it has. Didn’t deserve 0 points in the televote. 14/10
21. Denmark 🇩🇰 Fyr og Flamme - Øve Os På Hinanden: Look we all know this song is cheesy but it’s the cheesiest Velveeta queso loco so it’s ranked so high in my opinion. This is a nod to the whacky and weird Eurovision I love. It’s always in my head and I always find myself dancing along. Deserved to be in the final over two of the songs in Semi 2. 13/10
22. Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 Efendi - Mata Hari: As far as the song goes, it’s enjoyable, but the stage show was a hot mess in my opinion. The choreo looked a mess and the different sheer legging configurations on the backup dancers was not the correct fashion choice in my opinion as I was distracted by the thought of why are they all different. Did deserve their spot in the final though. 12/10
23. Moldova 🇲🇩 Natalia Gordienko - Sugar: The studio version of this song is a heavily replayed one on my playlist bc of the drop and dance-ability of the song. However the downfall of the song was it’s live performance. The staging was fine and the choreo was great but those attempted sexy whisper vocals were not the choice to go with. I don’t want to sugar-coat this 😝 so they were terrible. Glad she made it but I felt her position in the final was one of just pure luck. 11/10
24. UK 🇬🇧 James Newman - Embers: The nul points was a huge ass oof. This song isn’t bad but I can see where people didn’t vote for it bc it’s not super memorable in terms of who all was participating this year. I like the song and always sing and dance along. 10/10
25. Israel 🇮🇱 Eden Alene - Set Me Free: This is how to do a revamp and be successful. Eden is a fantastic artist who can clearly sing, but the live performance was not all that sans the whistle tones. Yet the whistle tones aside, the song is lacking a lot. When looking back at the songs available, this one should not have been the selected one. I was always on the fence with this one and still am. 9.5/10
26. Czechia 🇨🇿 Benny Cristo - Omaga: The live definitely hurt this song in the first minute and a half. The second half was absolutely what should have happened in terms of vocals. Still like the song and listen to it often. 9.25/10
27. Ireland 🇮🇪 Leslie Roy - Maps: This song was a victim of a super strong bloodbath and shoddy staging ideas. The song is arresting and a bop. Leslie’s gruff voice mixed with the modernized Irish sounds is a match made. The staging of this song that required Leslie to run along with the beat and the distracting and constantly changing bits of the performance we’re definitely it’s downfall. It didn’t deserve last place in Semi 1 though. 9.25/10
28. Portugal 🇵🇹 The Black Mamba - Love Is On My Side: I am the first to admit that while I don’t like the song, it deserved the final. The staging and atmosphere elevated the song. 9/10
29. Austria 🇦🇹 Vincent Bueno - Amen: In the battle of the Amens, this one wins solely based on the classy and amazing staging. Don’t get me wrong, Slovenia’s was also elevating but this one did it better. 8.5/10
30. Australia 🇦🇺 Montaigne - Technicolor: This song is a fantastic one for studio. The live since the Sydney Mardi Gras performance has been rough and didn’t necessarily improve. I feel bad bc I do really love this song but it definitely didn’t deserve to qualify. This being said, I love Montaigne, and Don’t Break Me was my runner up last year, and I still listen to it as my anthem when I’m feeling down. I wish I could rank this higher but I can’t. 8.5/10
31. Romania 🇷🇴 Roxen - Amnesia: This song is great in the studio but it got old real fast for me and I don’t know why. This mixed with the poor vocals and the bizarre costume:stage combo was really what did this in and got this low in my ranking. 8.25/10
32. Slovenia 🇸🇮 Ana Soklic - Amen: The loser of the Amen battle, but just barely. The song and vocals are better in my opinion but the whole package was just barely edged out in the end. 8/10
33. Latvia 🇱🇻 Samanta Tīna - Moon Is Rising: Look, this song is nowhere near as good as last years. The queeeeeen sashayed away with that annoying trap beat. 8/10
34. North Macedonia 🇲🇰 Vasil - Here I Stand: Leave it to the gays for bringing musical theatre to Eurovision. The song honestly isn’t that special or memorable but he’s higher up bc his stage and voice are amazing. 7/10
35. Norway 🇳🇴 Tix - Fallen Angel: A great message on mental health outside of the song and Tix seems like a quality fella but I do not like the song. I preferred it in Norwegian. And this low ranking is not at all influenced over him beating out Keiino (but maybe a slight bit tho). 5/10
36. Estonia 🇪🇪 Uku Suviste - The Lucky One: While this was 1000% better than last years entry, it still was relatively boring. The stage was equally as boring so sorry Estonia, but you didn’t make the mark. 4.5/10
37. Poland 🇵🇱 Rafael - The Ride: This throwback to the 80s was a bad one. The attempt at a one hit wonder vibe really hurt it along with the artist’s terrible vocals. Also half the time, he was behind the pyro and relying on backup vocals. 4/10
38. Georgia 🇬🇪 Tornike Kipiani - You: You really should not have to wait so long for the more upbeat rock ending of this. If it was that last 30 seconds for 3 minutes, it would be much better. A definite step back from last year. 1/10
39. Germany 🇩🇪 Jendrick - I Don’t Feel Hate: Jendrick might not feel hate but I do bc that is all I feel when this song comes on. 0.5/10

my eurovision 2021 ranking (before rehearsals)
hey!! 🤍 i’ll try to keep this short & sweet (and bear in mind some of these are subject to change & depend on my mood) but this is my rough ranking of this year’s entries based solely on the studio cuts <3
dislike:
39. 🇩🇪 jendrik - i don’t feel hate: i knew this would be my last place since i first heard it. he seems like a nice guy but this type of music is just. not for me? in fact i don’t think i’ve ever even managed to make it all the way through since my first listen :/
38. 🇱🇻 samanta tina - the moon is rising: i love love LOVE samanta & think she is an absolute gem but this song & me simply do not go together. that being said i appreciate both her voice & the message
37. 🇵🇱 rafał - the ride: while this is slightly catchy & seems to be an ear worm for me, i cannot take this song seriously. rafał looks ridiculous in those sunglasses in the music video. the lyrics are awful too
neither like nor dislike:
36. 🇦🇱 anxhela peristeri - karma: this is very strange because usually i am the no. 1 fan of ethnic influenced ballads at eurovision, but i just do not get this one. i can definitely see the appeal but it’s not for me
35. 🇲🇰 vasil - here i stand: i think his voice is great however the song doesn’t do much for me. i find it quite forgettable & think he was definitely capable of giving us something better which is a shame
34. 🇫🇮 blind channel - dark side: i enjoyed this quite a bit when it first came out but it’s quickly slid down my ratings. the lyrics are too edgy for me & it’s a throwback to a genre of music that i don’t really enjoy anyway. but i can appreciate that it sticks out & does something different
33. 🇨🇿 benny cristo - omaga: i was a massive fan of kemama last year & while i liked this upon first listen, i have to say its far too generic to really stick out after a while. plus some of the lyrics are a bit creepy lol. having said that i think seeing him perform it live could definitely change my opinion
32. 🇸🇪 tusse - voices: another year, another generic well produced pop song from sweden. should we be surprised anymore? it’s okay, i don’t hate it, but i’m struggling to find anything i like about it. plus the lyrics are the most “eurovision cliche lyrics” i’ve ever heard
31. 🇬🇧 james newman - embers: okay while this is ranked relatively low, i have to say this is better than anything we’ve sent since 2017. it’s a nice song, i enjoy it when it’s on, but i don’t have an urge to play it, if that makes sense?
30. 🇲🇹 destiny - je me casse: i know this is probably blasphemy but i just do not understand the hype around this song. destiny has a great voice but i don’t see how this song sticks out in anyway that it’s the favourite to win? it’s another one that i won’t skip but i won’t seek out to listen to
29. 🇦🇹 vincent bueno - amen: i do enjoy this, but i wish it just had a bit more oomph. the lyrics for the verses are good but the chorus is just lacking something. i do think this could be a dark horse to qualify though
28. 🇸🇮 ana soklič - amen: i just realised the two amens are right next to each other on my ranking lol. anyway, this is only so high because of her amazing voice. the song doesn’t really do anything for me, but you have to appreciate that level of talent
27. 🇺🇦 go_a - shum: this is one i know i’ll appreciate more live, but i just can’t get into the studio version. plus i really liked solovey last year so this one seems worse in comparison
26. 🇲🇩 natalia gordienko - sugar: this is good but i think all “dream team” songs are a little bit dated nowadays. however saying that i love the music video & moldova always improve live
25. 🇵🇹 the black mamba - love is on my side: this has been a big grower. it’s not a favourite, but i think it definitely has its niche, and i can appreciate that
24. 🇳🇱 jeangu macrooy - birth of a new age: grow was in my top 5 last year, so it was always gonna be hard for jeangu to deliver something as good. this has grown on me, but i’m still not 100% on board
like:
23. 🇳🇴 tix - fallen angel: i didn’t like this at first because i was so heartbroken that keiino didn’t win the national selection, but i’ve gotten over it now lol. it’s cheesy but in a good way, i think this act doesn’t take itself too seriously either which makes it more enjoyable
22. 🇸🇲 senhit ft flo rida - adrenalina: it’s fun, catchy, even has a surprise verse from flo rida! probably san marino’s 3rd best entry ever (justice for complice & crisalide 💔)
21. 🇨🇾 elena tsagrinou - el diablo: it’s just a very good pop song. i’m not in love with it but it’s of a very good quality (well. apart from the lyrics). i’m sure the staging will improve it even more
20. 🇬🇷 stefania - super girl: greece is one of my biggest growers from last year, i think this is a MUCH better song than supergirl was. i’m really rooting for stefania
19. 🇪🇪 uku suviste - the lucky one: this has been such a big grower, it’s insane. i can recognise it’s not the best song but i just really like it for some reason.
18. 🇪🇸 blas cantó - voy a quedarme: i’m a sucker for native language ballads, and this is a pretty standard one, but it’s good to me. blas seems like a real sweetheart too, which helps :)
17. 🇨🇭 gjon’s tears - tout l’univers: this is another one of those songs that i really should love, and while i like it, i can’t really connect with it. gjon’s entry last year was my second favourite, and unfortunately this doesn’t scratch the same itch that did, it’s still a very good song & i completely understand why it’s one of the favourites to win
16. 🇧🇪 hooverphonic - the wrong place: i really don’t like hooverphonic as a band (actually it’s mostly alex callier that i dislike) but this is just a good song. i am still upset that luka didn’t get to go to eurovision though :/
15. 🇮🇪 lesley roy - maps: another massive grower! i much prefer this to her song last year. i really hope ireland can get their shit together & give this song the staging it deserves
14. 🇦🇿 efendi - mata hari: this is basically a carbon copy of cleopatra, and i guess i liked that so i like this. however i will say it has dropped in my ranking a bit. i’m ranking this solely on the song, efendi herself is a different matter & i’m not really educated enough on what’s happening in azerbaijan/armenia to comment but from what i’ve seen it’s not the best, let’s say
13. 🇱🇹 the roop - discoteque: i prefer on fire from last year, but this is definitely not a bad effort. i can’t see it as a contender for the win though. another one i will probably enjoy much more live
12. 🇷🇴 roxen - amnesia: i really like the message of this song. i just wish she would work on her english pronunciation, but that’s a minor complaint. but i really like roxen as an artist
love:
11. 🇷🇸 hurricane - loco loco: i love girl groups, and this is no exception. vocally they’re really good, i love that it’s in serbian, & i also just really love sanja vučić lol
10. 🇭🇷 albina - tick tock: i wish this was fully in croatian, but i think it’s a great song regardless. i loved her performance at dora so hopefully they’ll do something similar/even better at esc
9. 🇧🇬 victoria - growing up is getting old: i preferred tears getting sober from last year but this is still really good. the lyrics are some of my favourite of this year, they really resonate with me. victoria is a really interesting artist & i’m really glad she got introduced to me through esc
8. 🇮🇱 eden alene - set me free: the revamp has made this move like 20 places up in my ranking lol. she is so talented & i just hope they have a good staging concept!
7. 🇮🇸 daði og gagnamagnið - 10 years: think about things was good but i think this is even better! i love the retro influences & the lyrics are so sweet
6. 🇬🇪 tornike kipiani - you: i might be one of the only people who adores this song. the lyrics paint such a clear picture of a simple, strong love. and i think it’s quiet but powerful at the right moments. i know i will be heartbroken when this doesn’t qualify :(
5. 🇫🇷 barbara pravi - voilà: i played this too much & ruined it for myself, but i love it again now. very authentically french but without overdoing it (cough 2017 staging cough), just a beautiful song
4. 🇮🇹 måneskin - zitti e buoni: i’m not a massive rock fan, but a song like this i just vibe with. it’s just so good. italy is always either my no. 1 or in my top 5 since they returned (apart from 2012 & 2014) and they’ve done it again. this is definitely a contender to win
3. 🇦🇺 montaigne - technicolour: this song is eclectic but i love it. i didn’t like don’t break me, but this is so much better, and so much more authentic to montaigne as an artist. i know it’s divisive, but i’m on the side that loves it
2. 🇩🇰 fyr og flamme - øve os på hinanden: this is just so fun. i love the 80s vibe, the performance at the national selection was simple but still very engaging. this is one i will play for many years after the contest
1. 🇷🇺 manizha - russian woman: where do i even start. native language, ethnic influenced sound, important message, charismatic performer. this song is amazing. and i’m so glad i’ve found manizha to listen to!
so that’s it!! if anyone wants to chat about their thoughts please message me!! 🤍

Hi this is definitely not Gaia but imagine if captain scarabee decked you out in gold and jewels and took you dancing at some big underground gala where you met the other conglomerate captains
The moon shone like a pearl, set with stars like diamonds in the velvet expanse of the night sky. Out of nerves, your hand went to your throat, where an emerald pendant set in gold rested against your skin, dangling between your collarbones. Your ears felt heavy, weighed down with solid gold earrings, bangles and baubles dripping from your arms and hands; Scarabee had even insisted on fastening a delicate gold chain with a tiny bell on it around your ankle. "So I can find you it we get separated, cherie," he said with a wink.
There was some sort of gala tonight, a gathering that was more political than frivolous, and he had covered you in glittering finery for the occasion, insistent on showing you off. You felt clumsy, off-balance in your heeled shoes, your range of motion limited by the absurd gown he had laced you into. But he had given you a wolfish grin when he was finished rolling you up, nearly licking his chops as he eyed you hungrily. "No one will be able to their eyes off you, ma belle petite. Least of all me."
Deep breath. Your ribs strained against the boning of the corset, painted lips pursed on the exhale as he led you inside. The ballroom was buzzing with quiet chatter, thankfully not terribly crowded. You snagged a flute of champagne from a passing waiter and took a sip, hoping for courage, and at your side, you heard Bee exclaim.
"Ah, my friends! Cherie, you must meet my associates." He steered you to a group of four men, who turned to face you at your arrival, and you suddenly felt as if you were being skewered by four separate piercing gazes. One was tall, with a scar running across his eye. Another dressed lavishly, gloved fingers curled around the head of an expensive-looking walking stick. The amber eyes of a third seemed to gleam as brightly as his silver teeth as he grinned at you, smoothing back his hair. The fourth was the shortest, his hair fashionably long and loose against his shoulders, nursing a glass of amber liquid. Scarabee proudly introduced you, practically glowing, then introduced his associates by name. The tall one was Zhuk, the regal one Scarafaggio, the grinning one Escarabajo, and the shortest was Ciarog. As each name was said, its owner took your hand, lifting it to their lips for a kiss; you told yourself it was nerves that caused the feeling of an electric current running up your skin with each press of their lips.
"Gentlemen," you said, dipping until a shallow curtsey, "it's an honor."
"The honor is ours, dear lady." Zhuk smiled, turning his gaze to Bee. "You've been hiding her from us, moy drug. Where did you find such an enchanting creature?"
They struck up a conversation, discussing trading and territorial disputes; who knew piracy could be so dull? You let your gaze wander, not truly paying any attention, until you heard a voice cut through the chatter.
"Honestly, can't you see you're boring the lady to death? If you insist on talking business, will you allow me to entertain her with a dance?"
You smiled gratefully at Scarafaggio, accepting his request before Bee could interject and letting him take your arm. He led you out onto the floor, placing his hand on your back and folding your hand in his, smoothly stepping into the waltz without missing a beat. "You dance beautifully, signore."
He laughs. "No need to be so formal, piccola, you may call me Gio. Most of my associates do." Over the music, he kept an engaging conversation, until there was a tap on his shoulder. There stood Zhuk, that gentle smile back on his face.
"May I cut in?"
Gio laughed, kissing your hand once more before placing it in his colleague's. "You may need to lead, my dear, this man has two left feet and no sense of rhythm."
Zhuk shot his back a withering look, then turned back to you, folding your much smaller hand in his as the band took on a slower melody. Scarafaggio hadn’t been entirely wrong, his movements weren’t as fluid or graceful, and he did seem a bit off tempo, but his gentle hold and captivating stare kept your focus away from his sub-par ballroom skill. “Tell me, roza, how is it that a scoundrel like Scarabee ends up with such a lovely flower on his arm?”
You can feel your cheeks turn pink, and you recount how you met the captain, sneaking your way onto his ship to steal ammunition only to be caught. He had been impressed with your stealth and your skill at hand to hand combat, and had decided to employ you on his crew. Naturally, he hadn’t been able to keep his hands off of you for long, and Zhuk chuckled good-naturedly as you admitted that you had more than once pointed a dagger at Bee’s nethers before giving in and letting him take you to bed. The Russian’s eyes only left yours to dart down to your lips, and the pink didn’t leave your cheeks the entire time he had you in his arms, the chatter of the ballroom seeming far away, unimportant.
This song was shorter than the last, and when it ended, another of the group appeared to take Zhuk’s place; the long-haired one, Ciarog, his scotch long gone but his grin still firmly in place. Zhuk surrendered you with another kiss to your hand, the shorter captain gleefully pulling you close; you had to admit, it was nice to be eye to eye with your dance partner, instead of having to crane your neck. “M’afraid my dancin’ skills are more suited to jigs than a waltz, but I hope I’ll be satisfactory to ye, lass.”
You laughed softly, shaking your head. “You’re doing just fine. Ciarog, right?”
He beamed as you remembered his name and its correct pronunciation. “You got it, darlin’. But you can just call me Cia, if ye like.” His dancing was more energetic than the previous two, more enthusiasm than form, but it was refreshing, the band seeming to follow his lead, beginning a more upbeat number. The soft lilt of his voce relaxed you, his jokes put you at ease, made you toss your head back and laugh; perhaps this gala wouldn’t be so boring after all. Especially not with such handsome dancing partners.
The last chord of the song had barely begun to fade when the last of the group approached, silver teeth flashing as he sent a suggestive look your way. “I believe it’s my turn with the lady, mi amigo.” Ciarog huffed and rolled his eyes, but placed your hand in his, giving his friend a good-natured jab with his elbow. You noticed right away that this one was more forward than his compatriots, pulling you flush to his body, his hand straying toward your waist as his eyes bored down into yours. “I’ve been waiting to have you in my arms all evening, mariposa. Shame on Scarabee for not bringing you along with him before; we could have met that much sooner.”
Your cheeks turned red, your stomach twisting, trying hard to concentrate on the steps so you wouldn’t tread on your partner’s foot. “I...well, I haven’t been a part of the crew for long…”
“And such a pretty thing, to be running with pirates.” He grinned, and your heart stuttered in your chest when you saw the flick of his tongue against one silver tooth. “You seem like the type of woman to chase the thrill of adventure, querida. Perhaps sometime you and I could-”
A silk-gloved hand interrupted him, smacking the back of his head as you looked over Escarabajo’s shoulder to find Bee, his eyes narrowed. “If you want to keep your tongue inside your head, mon ami, you’ll stop that thought right there and unhand her.”
The Spaniard rolled his eyes, but stepped back from you, his fingers lingering in the dip of your waist. “If you ever feel the need for a change of scenery, mariposa, you just call for Bajo. I’m at your beck and call.” He tipped you a wink, sending Bee a rather smug look as he sauntered away, and Bee muttered something venomous in French at his retreating back.
He gathered you into his arms and ushered you off the dance floor, sighing as his fingers traced your cheek. “I’m sorry to be away from you for so long, cherie. Those scoundrels weren’t too boorish, I hope?”
You smiled, leaning into his hand. “Not at all, I’m having a wonderful time. Your friends are...very kind.” Bee raised a brow at that; there were many things you could call his associates, but kind was rarely one of them. He noted the blush on your cheeks, and the way your eyes seemed to shine. The others had certainly seemed smitten with you, and a slight, lopsided grin touched his mouth at the thought; it wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world, to share you among the five. If you were amenable to it, that is. After all, they shared nearly everything else. Perhaps tomorrow, he’d discuss it with you. Tonight, he planned to keep you all to himself.

Writing Update 05
Guess who finished. guess. go on guess. That’s right it was me!!
It was pretty intense because my playlist had finished and so I was sat feverishly typing the last paragraph out in silence and then when I went round for the final spell check I was listening to Achilles Come Down by Gang of Youths and it finished as I finished and it was a moment.
So so so. in total we have
69069 words (nice) and 102 pages spread over 23 chapters and 5 parts. I can actually go into the plot and stuff now too because I know what that is from start to finish. I won’t go into that here I’ll just talk about the last chapters. Buckle up this ones gonna be long.
Whence last we left off there were 17 chapters and now there’s twenty-three. Chapter seventeen also has an actual name too so yay.
Chapter 17 – Pinches of Catgut
Chapter 18 – Yours Forever, Echo
Chapter 19 – Ink’s Tarnish
Chapter 20 – Red Room
Chapter 21 – Crosshatched Scars
Chapter 22 – Chasing Sundust
Chapter 23 – Amen
Chapter 17 originally is now what chapter 18 and chapter 23 isn’t really an epilogue but it also is y’know? Like the last two chapters are the endings in their own right (I say as if I didn’t stop reading The Darkest Minds seven pages from the end)
But c’est la vie!
Chapter 16 (I can finally explain this stuff woo) we had the fallout to the guy’s being told they have to pay the devil – who isn’t really the devil and is actually a god in his own right but that’s beside the point – back for everything he’s done for them. this one focuses on Valentine and Albert having a bit of a moment where I realised ‘oh gosh everyone is a foil to everyone oh gosh’
Chapter 17 is kinda the same but from William and Basil’s side where they have their own conversation about who Will killed Charlie by accident….yeah…William is still baby he just killed someone that’s fine. This is fine.
Chapter 18 is where shit hits the fan because oh my god James is back!!!!! Idk if I mentioned this but James is Enoch’s dead bf who wasn’t dead at all and I’ve been hinting at it the entre god damned book. I almost didn’t include it but after a talk with one of my friends I realised that James’ being alive would bring in more tea than ever before and well,,,,,,why wouldn’t I?
Oh yeah James also tells Enoch that everyone is coming to find them.
The way I'm explaining this seems like stuff just happens, but I swear I do add threads throughout! I'm just disjointed in my thought process.
Chapter 19 is the beginning of the end. We have a rush to pack as they’re trying to get out and they would have more help from James but Basil doesn’t trust James, Enoch is drunk, William has lost a lot of blood and both Al and Valentine had been asleep so they’re slow and groggy and it’s raining because England and winter and the coast is just a great combination.
Enoch and James end up going ahead cus people are getting close and they need to get their stuff away from there. There were three cases left to tie but they didn’t have time so while James and Enoch go ahead the others are carrying the last three cases to the docks so they can tie and run.
Chapter 20 is where Enoch wraps his beef with Aristide up. kinda. He originally planned on just saying goodbye but then stuff happens and he feels bad for Aristide so he just gives him to the devil without the murder part of it.
Chapter 21 valentine kills his uncle and gets closure™
Chapter 22 this chapter is so good. I love it, I love it so much. I'm still kinda feeling funky about it because its got a flashback and the rest of the book hasn’t got anything exactly like this – unless you consider the small titbit in chapter 17 a flashback. But I really delve into Sebastian’s psyche and before then I kinda hated Sebastian but it feels like he's had a whole ass character arch and I love it. I really love this chapter so much.
And finally chapter 23 is them running and the last of the setup for the next book
I want to include memes but they’re all old stuff. If I have anything new, I’ll insert it if not I’ll keep 5 random facts about the boy’s as my transition.
Albert
When he was a bab he wanted to meet keats before he realised the mans is dead.
Can write in shorthand in both Russian and English just so long as he doesn’t focus too hard on it
Albert is his middle name, Lyonya is his first name
Is a cat person.
Orders the same meal at every restaurant even if they don’t serve it. if they don’t serve it he has a tiny crisis.
Also defo has one of the others order for him
Basil
Defo a gifted and talented student if he was alive today
He's technically an accountant and low key enjoys it
Can fight but is a pacifist by choice
Skipped class once and got bored and never did it again
When they were still at school he would look after the groups deeds to land and do all the legal stuff for them because they had no clue. He still has all of Valentine’s papers and so could technically steal valentines land and nobody would care.
Enoch
Isn’t gay is actually bisexual
Is really good at science but just doesn’t care about it
He ate leek and potato soup exclusively for three weeks on a dare
Once played Mercutio and tripped on stage. Managed to hide it pretty well but hasn’t lived it down.
Would live in an old theatre if he could just for the aesthetic and bragging rights
Valentine
His family is of German heritage
Bakes as a stress relief but gets hyper focused on one thing for ages (tarts is the big one of the year)
Is the mum of the group but wouldn’t ever admit it
Cannot do maths for shit. or much else. He can just speak a lot and paint.
It’s a continuous joke irl and in novel universe that he’s called Valentine, but his birthday is on February 15th because his parents thought it was still February 14th when he was born.
William
Allergic to honey but would eat it anyway
Joined classes three years after everyone else
Is the only one in the group that understands people
Has a really bad centre of gravity and falls over a lot
He's 6’7
Bonus – a wild Sebastian appeared.
Acts 50 is 20
Is just brine
In a constant state of identity crisis
Was he born or did he just appear fully formed? Nobody knows
Always stuck as Benvolio. No matter what. forever. He hates it.
Excerpts! –
“you are a walking disaster.” Basil sighed
“I'm your favourite disaster though.” He could hear the smile in Enoch’s voice.
I just like these lines. Nothing too deep just thought they were funny.
Basil placed a hand on his knee hoping the rain could drown out what the music that followed William could not.
My mans being a supportive friend
He finished pulling the manuscript together and reached for the box Albert kept all his current writings in. it was a small box with darker patches between the broken veins where ink had spit and flowed between the cracks.
i have nothing to say about this
They only had real tenderness with some of the fragile things. A school given copy of A Midsummer Night's Dream, a book by a man called Sashenka Potemkin, teacups with still blooming meadows painted onto them, a book about a monastery, a violin case that had nail marks embedded into the leather, an easel.
Y’know keepsakes are Important but if you’re running shouldn’t you pack light? Probably but these guys are sentimental bastards
The shops were alive with people, the two pubs were open and selling even the tailoress was in business. He wasn’t entirely surprised; worms came out during a storm. They thrived when the squawking of the gulls had disappeared.
We live in a society – Enoch 2019
The gate yielded under his hand, the closest he got to acceptance in the high walls. It seemed colder once he’d walked into the threshold, urging him towards the sickening feeling of unbelonging that sat in his gut. It made him want to turn away and never come back some of the time. How much he didn’t belong there.
Sebastian is yearning™
Basil reached into Albert’s pocket and pulled the crocus out. Albert didn’t react as he did so. he stared at it twirling it between his fingers staring at the petals and their untarnished glory despite having been used to kill them all at least once.
And while that isn’t the last line that’s the end of this. I'm taking a break from beginning anything big and while I want to move onto writing Adalius, Ariane and Adionis’ story I’ll wait for a moment before I do. just because I cant bring myself to think about how I'm starting this yet.
Anyway. That means no updates for at least 3 weeks. I know you’re all distraught. But yeah.
I hope you have a good day.
Thanks for reading this!

Internationaux de France  Ladies LP Pt. 1
Good afternoon, my friends! And welcome to my new followers! I hope you enjoy my Marvel posts, anti Endgame posts, and my figure skating recaps. I have a constant running queue of posts but if you ever wanna chat, feel free to send me a message, I’ll be happy to respond!
So this afternoon we have the ladies long programs. Two Russians sit at the top followed by two Americans. Who’s going to come out on top? Let’s find out in France!
Nicole Schott starts us off. Interesting music combination of a cartoon about a kung foo panda and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She seems a little tight but she’s mostly landing her jumps with some turn outs. This program is much better for her than her short but her chorerography still leaves a lot to be desired. I do think this style fits her much better. She still needs some connection to it and the audience but it’s not bad.
Maria Sotskova is our first Russian. I really like her dress. It’s pretty. I love that she’s trying for a more mature style. I’m not sure she’s quite ready for it yet though. She’s not landing her jumps which is affecting her presentation as is usually the case. I’m undecided about this program, honestly. I like her skating. She seems very pleasant and lovely and I got glimpses of her personality but this program doesn’t really highlight that. It’s more mature than the baby Russians but I’m not sure she’s ready to pull it off yet. Hmmm. I need to sit with this one I think.
Lea Serna is next. She’s skaking to Game of Thrones. Lovely triple lutz-triple toe loop to start. She’s not the most elegant of skaters and could use some refinement, but there’s a lot of potential. She’s has nice transitions between jumps and there’s choreography and content throughout the whole program. She making some costly jump mistakes. Overall, I like this program. It builds in the drama and is intriguing. I think if she keeps working with Brian Joubert, she’ll have some success in the coming years. Not her best performance but I think she’ll be one to watch.
I am not sure about Yuna Shiraiwa’s dress. It looks like it’s supposed to represent a bloody wound in her side and blood dripping down. I’m not familiar with the music so the dress must be related to that. Okay, I looked it up and the music is from the movie, Amen, and explores links between the Vatican and Nazuu Germany. The plot as most movies about the Holocaust should be is sad and horrifying, so the ‘wound’ on the dress makes sense. Yuna is a lovely skater though. She struggled a lot on the jumps, but she very soft and elegant.  There’s intricate and interesting chorerography throughout, but I’m not sure this type of dramatic style is right for her particular style.
I did not know that Mae Bernice Meite was the current French champion! That’s great to hear. She is a fan favorite and one of mine as well. As usual, her dress is beautiful. She’s skating to Adele, a dofter ballad for her. While I still think, she would do better with a more powerful piece, I do appreciate that she tries different styles with each program. She struggling on the jumps and is kind of all over the place but she’s putting heart and emotional into it. She’s not the most elegant skater but she’s compelling and lovely to watch. I like that program and she’s obviously very well loved in France. I also really love Slyvia and John as coaches. I hope she can skate that program clean. It would be an amazing program if she can do that.
Alright on to the next group!

About the words in the heart The words in the heart
Just to you alone

You must be thinkin’ something
But you ain’t sayin’ nothing
You remember me
I used to be your boyfriend
There ain’t no point in reason
It only gets defensive
Why should we ruin the purity of the moment
It’s a laugh, what a laugh
It’s so stupid I gotta laugh
And the funny thing is everyone thought
We were forever
It’s a laugh, what a laugh
It’s so stupid that I gotta laugh
And the other thing is I really thought
That we were special
Maybe I should feel guilty
Is that the American way
But I just look at myself
As if I were above me
You must be thinkin’ something
But you ain’t saying nothing
You remember me, I have been here always
It’s a laugh, what a laugh
It’s so stupid I gotta laugh
And the funny thing is everyone thought

It’s so stupid I gotta laugh
And the other thing is I really thought

It’s so stupid I gotta laugh
And the funny thing is everyone thought
We were forever
It’s a laugh, what a laugh
It’s so stupid I gotta laugh
And the other thing is I really thought
That we were special
So strange but it’s a laugh, what a laugh
It’s so stupid I gotta laugh
And the other thing is everyone thought
We were forever

Jester Hairston
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jester Joseph Hairston (July 9, 1901 – January 18, 2000) was an American composer, songwriter, arranger, choral conductor, and actor. He was regarded as a leading expert on Negro spirituals and choral music. His notable compositions include "Amen," a gospel-tinged theme from the film
Lilies of the Field
and a 1963 hit for The Impressions, and the Christmas song "Mary's Boy Child".
Early life
Hairston was born in Belews Creek, a rural community on the border of Stokes, Forsyth, Rockingham and Guilford counties in North Carolina. His grandparents had been slaves. At an early age he and his family moved to Homestead, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh, where he graduated from high school in 1920. Hairston, who gave up studies at Massachusetts Agricultural College in the 1920s, went on to graduate from Tufts University in 1928 and studied music at the Juilliard School. Hairston pledged Kappa Alpha Psi (Chi Chapter) in 1925. He worked as a choir conductor in the early stages of his career. His work with choirs on Broadway eventually led to his singing and acting in plays, films, radio programs, and television shows.
Career
Helped by benefactor Anna Laura Kidder who saw his potential, Hairston graduated from Tufts University, near Boston, Mass. in 1929. He was one of the first black students admitted to Tufts.
He sang with the Hall Johnson Choir in Harlem for a time but was nearly fired from the all black choir because he had difficulty with the rural dialects that were used in some of the songs. He had to shed his Boston accent and relearn the country speech of his parents and grandparents. (Johnson had reportedly told him, "We're singing ain't and cain't and you're singing shahn't and cahn't and they don't mix in a spiritual.") The Hall Johnson Choir performed in many Broadway shows including Green Pastures. In 1936, they were asked to go to Hollywood to sing for the film,Green Pastures. At that time, a Russian composer, Dimitri Tiomkin, heard Jester and invited him to collaborate with him. This led to a thirty-year collaboration during which time Jester arranged and collected music for the movies. He also wrote and arranged spirituals for Hollywood films as well as for high school and college choirs around the country.
Hairston wrote the song "Mary's Boy Child" in 1956. He also arranged the song "Amen", which he dubbed for the Sidney Poitier film Lilies of the Field (1963), and arranged traditional Negro spirituals. Most of Hairston's film work was in the field of composing, arranging, and choral conducting. Hairston also acted in over 20 films, mostly in small roles, some of which were uncredited. Among the films he appeared in were bit parts in some of the early Tarzan movies, St. Louis Blues (1958), The Alamo (1960), To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), In the Heat of the Night (1967), Lady Sings the Blues (1972), I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988) and Being John Malkovich (1999).
In 1961, the US State Department appointed Jester Hairston as Goodwill Ambassador. He traveled all over the world teaching and performing the folk music of the slaves. No matter where Jester performed in the US, he checked the phone book for Hairstons and was responsible for reuniting people on his family tree, both black and white. He composed more than 300 spirituals. All of his research and work has been documented for history. He was the recipient of four honorary doctorates, including an honorary doctorate from The University of Massachusetts in 1972, and another in music from Tufts in 1977.
Hairston appeared on The Amos 'n' Andy Show. He had been in the radio program that was the basis for the TV show. He also played the role of Wildcat (1974–1975) on the show That's My Mama. In his senior years he appeared in the show Amen as Rolly Forbes (1986–1991). His last television appearance was in 1993 on an episode of Family Matters, a sitcom. Hairston also played the role of "King Moses" on radio for the Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall show Bold Venture.
In his later years, Hairston served as a cultural ambassador for American music, traveling to numerous countries with choral groups that he had assembled. In 1985 he took the Jester Hairston Chorale, a multi-racial group, to sing in the People's Republic of China, at a time when foreign visitors were still quite rare in that country.
Death
Hairston died in Los Angeles of natural causes in 2000 at age 98. Born in 1901, Hairston's life spanned each year of the 20th century. For his contribution to the television industry, Hairston has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame located at 6201 Hollywood Blvd. He is interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California.

"HEAVEN ON EARTH"
G-d lives on the 6th floor.
G-d's on the subway coming home from work. She couldn't get a seat again has a headache, and her feet are killing her. G-d makes mental note about urban congestion, and stress. it’s been a problem since Ur, or was it Babylon? Anyway it was that time she was a snake charmer.
Oh the carnivals! Music theatre. These are the best things humanity has come up with. It's among the reasons she loves them so much. It's their saving grace,...literally.
The train pulls in She has to struggle out of the crowded car. No one will get out of her way. Polite consideration still a vague idea. However they are learning they are trying. G-d joins the wave of tired people ascending together out of the grimy station. On her way some lite deli shopping. A pint of vanilla ice cream oranges mint tea. You know, the brand with the nice pictures. Bread sticks, and dried figs. All the major food groups. G-d browsed Her way to the counter, and pays in Aztec jade, Roman silver, and Weimar bank notes. The Haitian family that owns the deli is used to their special customer paying in odd currencies. The woman behind the counter gives change in Barbados dollars, American dimes, and Kenyan pennies. The two are friends so gossip, and other pleasantries which are cut short by other customers. G-d adds a lotto ticket to her purchase. The two bid each other goodbye till next time. Outside G-d sees a homeless man. She knows him his name is Thomas. Though he doesn't remember his true name is Azzarel, He is an Angel. In time he'll remember. G-d put a silver shekel once earned by a certain Judean carpenter into his cup. Doing this smiling She went on her way. G-d blinked, and there was Light. G-d sang, and there was Life. G-d smiled, and there was Love. The "Lord of Hosts" got to her building. She lived on the top floor of a six story walk up. G-d liked it up there it was convenient to the roof. If it wasn't raining she'd spread a blanket. She'd lay, and watch Her sky, Her clouds, and at night Her moon, and stars.  Bounding up the stairs She enjoyed the aromas of cooking from half a dozen ethnic groups. Her neighbors were preparing, and settling down for their evening meals. The "Divine" enjoyed the music the symphony's of all their various languages, and the emotions.
At last G-d got to Her apartment,..6-B. She put Her keys into triple Medico locks, and went in. Her cats Caine, and Able were waiting for her. It was well past their dinner time, and they were more than slightly annoyed. Her pets didn't care if She was G-d,...they were cats, and 'they' were hungry. __________________________________________ "LISTENING" The Mother of Isis the G-d of Abraham, the Lord of Gandhi, the Mother Creator of all that was is or will be was on the roof of Her sixth floor walkup. She was laying on a blanket listening. It was well past midnight hints of snow in the wind. G-d was listening to prayers. The Lord Creator listened to prayers the way we listen to the radio. The music of souls was in the air. The sky was bathed in prayer they danced over the city like sparkling aurora's. G-d watched, and listened. She listened to each,...and...every...one. __________________________________________ "REVELATION" The Lord was on a bus, She was headed to a dentists clinic,...dreaded root canals. She was seated on those hard plastic bench's toward the back, and was looking out the window. The ebb, and flow of the traffic reminded Her of the start stop gliding of schools of fish.  G-d looked at the passengers. Almost all the tribes of humanity were here. New York Constantinople Babylon how they gathered the family together.  There a Russian plumber a young African school girl telling secrets to her best friend. A Korean house painter two Mexican women in animated conversation about the new bookstore they were going to open.  An old woman. A woman who had lived most of her life in rural China. She was staring. Staring at G-d. The woman looked from behind crinkled lids with clear brown eyes. Eyes that held recognition. Eyes that beheld G-d on a bouncing downtown bus on an unremarkable day. This didn't happen often. Being seen, being recognized. When it did it was usually small children or the dying. Those entering or leaving this life. This woman that saw G-d was neither. Her name was Violet. This woman who could behold the Creator of the Heavens, and the Earth. Violet spent most of her life as an herbalist. She learned how the Earth was life giving. She used this knowledge to cure illness, assist childbirth, and ease death. G-d, and Violet just sat, and beheld each other as New York blared, and blinked around them. Till at last Violet asked G-d, asked in a calm voice,..."Are you sure you know what you're doing?" She who laid the foundations of worlds with a touch of a gentle smile on her lips said,... "Yes." The bus eventually pulled up to Union Square. Violet got up to leave, but turned at the last moment, and asked...
"Are you happy?"
The Creator gave a wink. The woman nodded, and went on her way. That night G-d thought again about Violet’s last question. How wise Her children were. Happiness was the whole point of this creation. Joy fulfillment. The Lord smiled. Oprah is closer to the Truth than she knows. Cain, and Able G-d's Persian cats meowed loudly. They were demanding their dinner. She who painted eternity with dreams knelt on her kitchen floor fed her companions, and looked to her window. She saw the night sky danced with aurora's of prayer's. She will listen to the Dreams, and Nightmares of Her children. G-d who birthed eternities will listen to the prayers of the this world. Though tonight she will pray too. Tonight G-d will Pray with Her Children.
Amen. __________________________________________ "HEAVEN ON EARTH" Epilogue, G-d is not far away in some golden heaven, ruling some distant Paradise. G-d is here with us. Always has been. Always will be. Because G-d's Heaven is on Earth. The blue, and fruitful world continued to sail around it's golden sun. Life went on with all it's joys, sorrows, and mysteries. The years gathered into centuries. The centuries into millennia, and the millennia into ages. Ages that melted mountains, lowered, and raised seas, and rearranged the stars. In this time all life was in the sea, as it was in the beginning. Humanity had long since transcended to their bright realities. Oh! How that pleased G-d! She was still with them, and loved them in their new realms. Though She'd followed her children as they scattered themselves amongst the stars. She still remembered, and abided on the earth. Now She dwelled in the seas with her newer children. This as the land rested, and healed from it's long work. G-d, the maker of Worlds, the founder of Dreams swam in clouds of plankton. She maneuvered amongst schools of fish, burrowed with worms, swayed with sea weed, 'and' Contemplated with Whales. Whales, and the others of their kind were the next of Her children who would find their way to the stars. She would learn with them wonder with them pray with them till at last they too found their bright place in eternity. She would do this for them as She had for all of Her children on all of the Earths. With Patience She would Watch. With Patience She would Guide. With Patience She would Love. Amen.

The Adventures of David Dashiki-Story of an African American Hero-Black History Month-the PROPOSAL
Tumblr media
The Proposal
DADDY DASHIKI..
Daddy Dashiki, my Daddy and Mentor, always possesses some intriguing ideas about issues pertinent to our people, The Black Community. This particular one captured my interest immediately. February is a very important and significant Black History month for us. Daddy Dashiki made this grand proposal to all Black folks. This month must be overall a working month, a month in which we render labor and service to our historical legacy. Surely, we will celebrate our accomplishments. Indeed, there are many. Still, we must examine our progress. plan and develop strategies for even greater achievements in the future. Daddy proposes clear divisions during the month...done weekly. Week 1-Science and Technology. Week 2-Education...Week 3-Politics and Government...Week 4-The Arts, Music  and Sports...Week 5 ( Because we are always late) - Community, Local, Neighborhood Services.  These are flexible in that Daddy is cognizant of the fact that Black folks must and will add some funk to the junk. Black folks will switch things up. Black folks out of necessity build on whatever to fulfill some spiritual compulsions...predilections. Let’s examine further. February will be a work month because we know about work. We will discuss work and its importance in the life our people. We will discuss all the labor we surrendered to America without compensation. We will show capacity and skills for our work throughout the month. We will respect that work and make the knowledge available to other groups. Here it is folks. We revel in our work, We provide you the evidence of it. We are workers... This is what we did. This is who we are, workers. Our work allowed America to achieve its greatness via a free labor force.
What is even more significant is that we celebrate and evaluate our labor. Yes, we have been successful, but are we better off this year than last ?This question and its answer will indicate the path and direction of the year’s efforts and our future pursuits. Let’s examine further the field of education. We have accomplished many things in the past year.... However, ( You knew this was coming) we are still the educational underclass in America. We inhabit the worst performing schools in the country. Our children are absent more than they attend class. Our students are suspended more and are registered for special education classes at a rate higher than any other ethnic group. If these facts are not cause for alarm, take into account the fact that the schools which Black students attend are inferior to those of white children. Their edifices are bright, glowing, warm, inviting, caring, loving, happy, smiling, effective, modern and progressive . Classes include: CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, ALGEBRA, BIOLOGY, GEOLOGY, METEOROLOGY, ANATOMY, CALCULUS, STATISTICS, US GOVERNMENT, PSYCHOLOGY, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, WOMEN’S STUDIES, ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, ASTRONOMY, ZOOLOGY, OCEANOGRAPHY, FORENSIC SCIENCE, BOTANY, GERMAN, AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE, JAPANESE, CHINESE, RUSSIAN, ARABIC, CHOIR, JAZZ BAND, DANCE,DRAMA, DRAWING, PAINTING, DIGITAL MEDIA, PHOTOGRAPHY, SCULPTURE, CERAMICS, ACCOUNTING, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, MARKETING, PERSONAL FINANCE, WEB DESIGN, MUSIC PRODUCTION, COMPUTER SCIENCE, WORD PROCESSING,, CULINARY ARTS, NUTRITION, FASHION DESIGN,  COMPUTERS, CODING AND CAD. These schools are a microcosm of what the present attendees will encounter in college and the real world. Black children are not attending college in correlation with their numbers in the population. It you watch a major college football game on a Saturday afternoon, you will note that  there are some 20-25 Black athletes on the team. However, in the stands, are almost 100,000 fans who are caucasian. That is the competition, 100,000 -25. Again we are providing free labor while others relax, and enjoy the performance.  There are fewer Black teachers. The curriculum does not reflect our children in any significant way.  The education system represents two distinct societies, the educated and advanced versus  the under-educated and the underclass. These are the work projects that Black History month should be designed to uncover and attack...Yesssss !!!!  It is always about the work. Our research and findings must determine our REQUIRED work until the next year of Black History celebrations, discovery and action. This is the proposal. This is our purpose. This is our work. AMEN!!!.

The Lure of a Better Life, Amid Cold and Darkness
Andrew Higgins, NY Times, Dec. 3, 2017
NORILSK, Russia--Blessed with a cornucopia of precious metals buried beneath a desert of snow, but so bereft of sunlight that nights in winter never end, Norilsk, 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, is a place of brutal extremes. It is Russia’s coldest and most polluted industrial city, and its richest--at least when measured by the value of its vast deposits of palladium, a rare mineral used in cellphones that sells for more than $1,000 an ounce.
It is also dark. Starting about now, the sun stops rising, leaving Norilsk shrouded in the perpetual night of polar winter. This year that blackout began last Wednesday.
Built on the bones of slave prison laborers, Norilsk began as an outpost of Stalin’s Gulag, a place so harsh that, according to one estimate, of 650,000 prisoners who were sent here between 1935 and 1956, around 250,000 died from cold, starvation or overwork. But more than 80 years after Norilsk became part of the Gulag Archipelago, nobody really knows exactly how many people labored there in penal servitude or how many died.
The Norilsk camp system, known as Norillag, shut down in 1956, when Nikita Khrushchev began to dismantle the worst excesses of Stalinism. The legacy of repressive control, though, lives on in tight restrictions on access to city. All foreigners are barred from visiting without a permit from Russia’s Federal Security Service, the post-Soviet successor to the K.G.B.
“Norilsk is a unique city, it was put here by force,” said Alexander Kharitonov, owner of a printing house in the city. “It is like a survivor. If it had not been for Norilsk, there would have been another principle of life in the Arctic: You came, you worked, you froze--and you left.”
The residents of Norilsk have stayed, turning what until the 1930s had been an Arctic wilderness inhabited only by a scattering of indigenous peoples into an industrial city dotted with smoke-belching chimneys amid crumbling Soviet-era apartment blocks and the ruins of former prison barracks.
The population dropped sharply after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, which sent the economy into a tailspin. It has risen again, along with Russia’s economic fortunes. Around 175,000 people now live year-round in Norilsk.
Beyond the city, which is 1,800 miles northeast of Moscow in northern Siberia, extends an endless, mostly uninhabited wilderness.
“Everything else is a vast wild land with a wild nature and no people,” said Vladimir Larin, a scientist who lives in Norilsk. “This is where the last wild mammoths died. When they dug the foundations of the buildings, they found the bones of mammoths.”
The bones of former prisoners also keep resurfacing, appearing each year when winter finally breaks in June and the melting snow carries to the surface these buried remains of the city’s grim and, in official accounts at least, still mostly smothered past.
Some residents are the descendants of former slave laborers who stayed on simply because it was too hard to leave a place so remote that locals refer to the rest of Russia as “the mainland.” There are no roads or railway lines connecting Norilsk to parts of Russia outside the Arctic. The only way to get in or out is by plane or by boat on the Arctic Ocean.
Many residents, however, came voluntarily, lured by the promise of relatively high salaries and steady work in the city’s metallurgical industry, a sprawling complex of mines and smelters owned by Norilsk Nickel. The business is a privatized former state company that is the world’s largest producer of palladium and also a major supplier of nickel, copper and other metals.
It is also one of the world’s biggest producers of pollution, turning an area twice the size of Rhode Island into a dead zone of lifeless tree trunks, mud and snow. At one point, the company belched more sulfur dioxide a year than all of France. It has since taken some steps to reduce its output of toxic waste but was last year blamed for turning the Daldykan, a river that runs by the plant, into a flow of red goo. Locals called it “blood river.”
The company gets its products to market through a port at Dudinka on the Yenisei River, the largest of three great Siberian rivers that flow north into the Arctic Ocean.
Dudinka, as well as providing Norilsk’s main outlet to the outside world, also offers a glimpse of the region’s past. The settlement’s natural history museum displays tents used by the four main indigenous peoples in the area. The biggest of these today are the Dolgans, a nomadic Turkic people that used to live off hunting and reindeer herding but were themselves herded into collective farms during the Soviet era.
There are now around 7,000 Dolgans, many of whom have given up their ancestors’ shamanistic beliefs in favor of Christianity. Smaller native groups include the Entsi, of which there are only around 227 left in the region, which is known as Taimyr.
Despite the horrendously harsh climate, choking pollution and absence of sunlight from late November until January, many residents are fiercely proud of Norilsk--and their own ability to survive in an environment that even the hardiest of Russians living elsewhere would find intolerable.
Last winter, temperatures plunged to minus 62 Celsius (minus 80 Fahrenheit), and early winter this year has also been unforgiving, with temperatures in November already falling to around minus 20 Celsius, about 4 below Fahrenheit.
The cold has spawned a booming freelance taxi business because it is too cold to walk even short distances. Taxis charge a fixed price of 100 rubles (about $1.70) to go anywhere in the city. There are also buses, but it is too cold to wait outside so passengers crowd into nearby shops to shelter until their bus arrives.
But even the bitter cold is for some a source of delight, with the frigid waters of Lake Dolgoye attracting swimmers who revel in the bracing experience of bathing in ice. “After bathing, I have the feeling that I have been on vacation for a week,” said Natalia Karpushkina, a 42-year-old who runs a local walrus club. The lake freezes only partially because of hot water pipes from a nearby power plant.
The city also has a large indoor swimming pool for those less keen on bathing in ice water.
Most of the work and leisure takes place indoors, particular in the winter period of perpetual darkness. Life inside became considerably less monotonous recently thanks to a long-awaited breakthrough: After decades of serving the digital economy by providing materials needed to make cellphones and computers, Norilsk got its first reliable internet service.
But even without the internet, it had replicated as best it could the amenities of a normal Russia city. The Norilsk College of Arts offers ballet lessons. Norilsk Greenhouse, a local company, grows cucumbers in heated shelters, while the Zaboi Bar offers revelers home brew and live music.
The bar’s 30-year-old manager, Anton Palukhin, who moved to Norilsk with his parents from Kazakhstan when he was 5, said that he still struggles with the climate and that whenever he travels to warmer parts of Russia on vacation, dreads having to return to the Arctic.
“I really do not want to go back and am ready to give anything so that I don’t have to fly,” he said. All the same, he keeps coming back.

The 2019 Brazilian Heart Celebration!
Por Katia Moraes
Tumblr media
This is one of the most exciting times of the year for me.
In 2012 I’ve created a show to celebrate the lives of Brazilian singer/songwriters. In 2014, after Maria Bethânia’s celebration, I made the decision to transform it into a musical, and since then the magical show includes more than a dozen Brazilian artists celebrating International Women’s Day.
Researching to write the script of the Brazilian Heart Celebration is like a puzzle. This year’s theme kept changing in my mind until all seemed to focus and make complete sense. In the beginning I wanted to celebrate 50 years of 1969, so I found out about the Brazilian hit parade of that year. Then, the political vibe of the present moment pushed me towards songs of protest and change in Brasil and the US. I read many books. 33 Revolutions Per Minute, Marching for Freedom about MLKJr, Gilberto Bem Perto about Gilberto Gil, and many biographies. I watched DVDs about Woodstock, Harry Belafonte and the Civil Rights Movement, Caetano and Gil’s exile in London, interviews with Belchior, Geraldo Vandré, documentaries about Woody Guthrie’s life, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and the music festivals in Brasil. After awhile, my brain usually mixes everything and I don’t know how to start. Then, I go through a restless period waking up in the middle of the night with vivid ideas of connections among composers, stories, and transition songs.  Finally a light bulb comes on! Here we are: Songs of Protest and Change plus Honoring Gilberto Gil.
Since 2012 the show also celebrate  the International Women’s Day. This year I invited singers Diana Purim and Emina Shimanuki, bassist Poliana Magalhães (just arrived from Portugal,) and drummer Ana Barreiro. I also invited Kanami (Kanushka, my Russian sister) to be our Vocal Director. I strongly believe in the power of group energy so artists stay on stage during the whole show.    Nothing more intense than 12 women singing, playing, and acting with open hearts.
The moment is definitely asking for revisiting our acts of social and political change through music.  Each singer will be singing two solo tunes, one in English and one in Portuguese. I suggested historical songs and after they were chosen,  I worked on the stories and quotes around them, adding transition songs as well. My friend and actress Mariana Leite collaborated with me.
For many years I wanted to pay homage to singer/songwriter and Tropicália master Gilberto Gil.  I admire him immensely and had the honor of opening his show at the House of Blues in Hollywood many years ago with my old band Sambaguru (thank you, Tita Lima.)  When I went to see his duet with Caetano Veloso  two years ago in downtown Los Angeles, I finally felt it was time to pay homage to him. Gil is a philosopher and a visionary. It was not hard to choose some of his songs, but I was left with the feeling that I would miss not playing many more.
I remember watching Gil at Canecão (show place now gone) in Rio about 30 years ago. The audience asked him to come back on stage three times. When he returned for the last time he said: “I’m getting old, guys,” and then laughed. What a charming and loving man. In his manners, words and actions.
Every year I invite new artists who besides being talented, are also kind and supportive. It’s fundamental that they enjoy sharing their craft and emotions with each other. I think this cast trust my ideas and opinions as well. The theme made us open up and face different political opinions, what I consider a great opportunity to practice compassion. The show requires one meeting to read the script and two musical rehearsals. I consider this experience a miracle!
Another miracle is to find sponsors who believe in your vision. I’m blessed for I’ve found some angels! The sponsors come in all shapes and forms. First, Marcia Argolo and Jorge Vismara who are with me since 2012. They open their home with smiles and excitement, take pictures, listen and also feed us! No words to thank them. Peter Lownds is always there when I need a translation or an English version, besides helping us with our pronunciation, and appearing on stage as well.  Deborah Edler-Brown (who had been part of two celebrations with us) was so kind in correcting and suggesting changes to the press release.
Another couple of angels are Dolores and David Mead, who take care of the lease of the theater. This year Dolores invited two other couples to share the costs of it.  Friends helping friends. :-)
And finally, thank you to Miriam Pellegrino of Ubatuba Açaí (present since 2017), Odete Pashaie of Brasilian Blow Dray Hair Salon (thank you, Sonia,) Judy Mitoma (who understands the importance of a helping hand after many years producing The World Sacred Music Festival,) John Crahan (who always shares links of Amy Goodman and Democracy Now with me,) Bengi and Peter (Turkey and Belgium represented), Mandy and John (East coast supporters,) Melinda Kelly (I call her Mel=honey), Paula and Phil Glosserman (Phil was part of the Brazilian Heart group I started in 1998), Cecilia Noel (my Peruvian sister who I had the honor of sharing the stage in my beginning years in Los Angeles), Suzanne Alpert (you never forget who visits you when you go to a hospital,) and Nicole Wesley, a lawyer who loves to support the Arts and showed up at the last minute by the hands of Sarah Pontes. And last but not least, my husband Neal Barbera with whom I learn every day.
A successful performance  is a product of sweat, talent, luck plus joy and respect  among all involved. I’ve been at fault thanking every supporter for my memory fails once in awhile with the responsibilities my dream entitles.  So, let me take the opportunity to thank Brasil Brasil Cultural Center (Amen and Nayla Santo), Ana Laidley (the best samba teacher and therapist ever!), Soul Brasil (Lindbergh Junior and Magali), Ana from the Brazilian Consulate, Maggie Lalique, Sergio and Sasha (KPFK FM), Patricia and Tatiana, Thiago Barreiro, Maria Alice Jacob, Viver Brasil Dance Company (Linda Yudin and Badaró), Beto Gonzalez and Samba Society, Bob Easton, Thalma de Freitas, Fabiano do Nascimento, Simon, Fabio, Bill Brendle, Flavio Medeiros, Isaías Elpes, Clarice Cast,  Felipe Fraga, Antonio de Sat’Anna, Leo Costa, Mitchell Long, Ted Falcon, Catina deLuna, Anna Beatriz, Mariana Goulart, JP Mourão, Carla Hassett, Mi Medrado, Maria Jacob, Caro Pierotto, and every artist who I collaborated with in the previous celebrations. I’m forever grateful.
If you still didn’t get your ticket, do it now. Witnessing magical moments do wonders to the soul. CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS
Thank you, for taking the time to read this story. Each one of us love what we do, and I’m sure you will feel it on Saturday, March 2nd.

Best Hotels in Krasnoyarsk for 2019 Winter Universiade | Miss Tourist
“Winter Universiade” is an annual student and youth winter sports competition attended by people all over the world! This event includes various competitions of snowboarding, ice hockey, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing and more!
The 29th edition of the Winter Universiade will take place between 2nd – 12th March 2019 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Krasnoyarsk city is located right in the heart of Siberia and it has a long history of sports, especially winter sports. Being in Siberia, you should be aware that the Krasnoyarsk climate is very cold and the highest temperature in March is 0° and the lowest is around -11°, so be careful to pack warm clothes! Be sure to check the Krasnoyarsk weather in advance as well!
If you are thinking of attending the 2019 Winter Universiade, then you are probably looking for a good accommodation option for your stay! Well, I have to warn you that, because this event is so popular all over the world, the hotel rooms are starting to book fast, so it is best to book yours as soon as possible!
The event will take place in different places and sports arenas that are scattered all around the city, so my opinion is to book an accommodation that is as close to the city center as possible, so you will be close to all transportation options, or one that fits your budget range best.
If you want to visit more cities in Russia during your stay, here is my article about awesome things to do in Moscow and in Saint Petersburg.
Here are some of the Winter Universiade 2019 venues where the Universiade games will take place:
Universiade Village (the campus of the Siberian Federal University)
Winter Sports Academy Regional Sports and Training Complex
Funpark Bobrovy Log
Platinum Arena Krasnoyarsk Sports and Entertainment Complex
Crystal Ice Arena
Biathlon Academy Multipurpose Complex
Arena-Sever Multi-Functional Complex
Leninsky Komsomol Stadium
Ivan Yarygin Sports Palace
Yenisei Ice Stadium
Rassvet Ice Palace
Pervomaisky Ice Arena
Even though some hotels are already sold out for the dates of the 2019 Winter Universiade, I have made my research and I have found some of the best Krasnoyarsk hotels, apartments and even guesthouses that still have some rooms available.
Here is the Krasnoyarsk map with all the hotels I am recommending:

Besides, you will also get free Wi-Fi and I’m sure you will relax during your time there!
Apartments on Vesny – This apartment is not located in the city center as well, but it is one of the best budget options out there. The rooms are clean and cozy and the staff is super friendly and always willing to help you and answer your questions! Plus, the fully equipped kitchen is a nice bonus and a money saver!
Guesthouses/Villas
If you are traveling to Krasnoyarsk in a larger group, I totally recommend you book your stay at one of the guesthouses or villas in the city.
Here are some of the best options:
Guesthouse Dobr Bobr – I am starting my guesthouse recommendations with this luxury villa perfect for 2, 5, 10 or even 16 people! The rooms are simple but cozy and you will also get a delicious continental breakfast each morning at the accommodation! And if you’re a fan of skiing, you can do it near this guesthouse!
пос. Овинный ул. Западная, 30 Villa – If you are looking for a middle-priced villa for you and your friends, this is a very good option for a group of 12 people! This villa looks simply gorgeous, it has a classical décor and even a billiard table and its own private gym! What more can you wish for?
House Hostel Krasnoyarsk – Another good middle-priced option is this superb villa! You can rent single or twin rooms in this accommodation and you can enjoy the cool outdoor swimming pool. You will also get free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV and some rooms even have a balcony. Plus, the decor is really beautiful and the entire place has a very cozy overall feel!
Bobrovy Log house Guest house – My third middle-priced guesthouse recommendation is this accommodation located right in the middle of nature! Although a bit far away from the city center, this guesthouse is perfect for a group of 6 people. The best part, you can relax and unwind in the beautiful garden and even use the grill facilities!
Желенодорожников 22г Guest house – If you are traveling to the city on a budget and you want to share a 2-person room in a nice guesthouse for a really good price, this is your best option! During your stay, you will benefit from clean rooms, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV in your room, plus a very calm atmosphere! The best part? You can even do hiking near the accommodation, which is a nice bonus.

Important information about the Russian Visa
By Russian law, every foreigner is supposed to register in an Immigration office on the day (!) of arrival. If you are going to Krasnoyarsk for the Winter Universiade 2019, you can apply for your visa before and the organizers will issue a visa invitation through the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and forwarded to the Consulate or Visa Centre of your preference.
Further information and assistance can be asked from the organizers through email: [email protected]
Once registered, they will give you a registration slip that you need to save until you leave the country. You will be fined if you don’t have this paper when you leave the country, so it is better to be safe than sorry.
Conclusion
These were all my accommodation recommendations for Krasnoyarsk, Russia, including hotels, apartments and guesthouses and villas, all sorted by price range. All of them have fabulous reviews and great facilities!
I hope you will find the best option for your stay and I also hope you will have a great time during your Krasnoyarsk travel at the Winter Universiade in March!
If you wish to further explore the magical land of Russia, you can read my articles about what do to in Moscow and in St. Petersburg!
As always, if you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comments below. I am happy to help!

Grecotel - Luxury Resorts Greece - Family Holidays Greece
The story of the largest and most successful Greek luxury hotels Greece group is above all personal. Nikos Daskalantonakis started his long journey in tourism from his birthplace of Rethymno, Crete. Nikos Daskalantonakis, along with his older brother Takis, looked further ahead, realizing that blue skies and sparkling seas were only enough to attract visitors’ interest: high standards of quality and responsiveness to tourists’ needs were the key to keeping them and to the future. And it’s this vision that powers the Grecotel’s unique concept of hospitality that is rooted in Greek culture and style.
Today, Grecotel properties occupy prime locations around Greece and are far more than just resorts—they are destinations. Grecotel resorts on the islands of Crete, Corfu, Rhodes, Kos, Mykonos, and in the prime mainland regions of Sounio south of Athens, Halkidiki in the north and Kyllini in the legendary Peloponnese have their own character, from ultra-luxury boutique hotels to magnificent resorts on sprawling estates and family-friendly or all-inclusive holiday-lands for quality vacations or romantic hideaways and luxurious spas. But they all share three things in common: a quality environment, signature service, and singular locations.
