Hi Joy,
Sorry if you have answered this before, but I was wondering which purchasing platform actually gives you the most money (or is most beneficial to you if there are other factors in play)? I would prefer my purchase to benefit you the most.
I have, but thanks for asking!
I gain the most money from my Payhip storefront, where I'm able to offer DRM-free editions of all my work.
But if that doesn't work for you, anywhere you buy from is good for me as it helps boost my sales ranking.
For paperbacks, I do earn slightly more from BookShop.org because they offer better affiliate rates (Flirting Edition) (Fluff), but otherwise I earn roughly the same flat rate across the board for all paperbacks regardless of how much the bookstore is charging, with the exception being Australia where the conversion rate faffs things.
My paperback rates will be going up in the last week of February to accommodate for the price hikes the publishers are pushing again, so if anyone's been thinking about it, now might be a good time.
(I list the books as $14.99, but retailers are allowed to take that as a suggestion and charge significantly more. I'll likely be raising it to $17.99 on my end because, at present, I'm earning 90 cents per paperback, or in the case of Australia, $00.01 🙃)
For audiobooks, I'd appreciate it if people bought from my Payhip rather than Audible, as Audible takes 80% of my royalties and doesn't let me set my own prices. As requested, I'll be uploading large files along with the chapter-by-chapter files for those who wanted that. (I'm actually doing that just now!)
But again, if Audible is more convenient or you've got credits, great! That boosts my sales rankings which makes it more likely for the algorithm to push it.
Speaking of algorithims, once a book or audiobook gets more than 50 reviews, the Amazon algorithm starts pushing it to wider audiences, so that's another great way you can help authors! So if anyone ever feels guilty about only ever being able to afford Amazon, please know authors still appreciate the sales, but we'd love it even more if you left reviews!

hello! i absolutely adore yuki, i love how soft he looks and the fur over zir eyes is super adorable!! (apologies if i got the pronouns incorrect!) it inspired me to want to get a sunlemon plush of my own-- what would you recommend as a good place to purchase one? i live in australia and all i'm getting is either amazon (don't want to support them/they're rather sketchy anyway) or japanese import storefronts over here in au (i'm cautious on whether or not they're legit). thank you so much for the help!!
I got Yuki from Plaza Japan which is a very legitimate website, in case that's an option for you. Otherwise, I'm not sure what other sites could work for you since I don't live in Australia, but if you have a few websites in mind but you're not sure if they're legit or not, I can always take a look at them for you and see!

Part 3 Entertainment - Books Part 2
I finally(!) learned about Stuff Your Kindle Day (SYKD), which is a bit of a misnomer as it's
Not amazon- or kindle-exclusive
Multiple times throughout the year
but it's a day where indie publishers/author promo groups all sell free books at once, adding up to dozens or hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of free books at a time, for a single day. If you were thinking about getting some ebooks to help pass the time at consults/after surgery, it wouldn't take very many out of those large number of free books to have plenty of reading material. I've been able to confirm that, outside of the US, this is also available in Canada, the UK, and Australia. Other countries may be participating as well, but I'm struggling to confirm one way or another, and the same book may not be free in all regions.
It's worth mentioning that Kindle, Apple, Nook, and Kobo all have free apps if you don't have an ereader (or would rather use a tablet than have a dedicated ereader), and that all of these storefronts are, to my knowledge, participants in all of these events. I will say that I was initially hesitant to get an ereader and waited a long time to get one, but I don't regret it. I have been, in particular, VERY vocal in recommending them to people who struggle to read paper books because you can change the font/font size/margin to make them more accessible, including using the OpenDyslexia font.
SYKD originally was romance-exclusive, and the "official" STKD events are still heavily romance-focused, but there are other publishers and groups coordinating similar, smaller events in other genres ("Book Blast" seems to be the current popular name for discount events not associated with the original group running SYKD).
If you know me at all, I am a pretty prolific category romance reader (especially at places like the doctor's office, where a romance novel is a nice time-waster that doesn't require wifi and allows me to not be fully immersed while I listen for my name to be called), so I'm quite excited for the official announcement for STKD, likely happening in March. In 2023, for some measure of comparison, SYKD happened on March 31, June 30, September 20, and December 27.
Romance Bookworms is the home of the "original" SYKD and allows you to sign up for email alerts (or substack) when they announce the dates for 2024, which are a closely guarded secret. SYKD is the largest of events by FAR with about 2,000 books available in the December 2023 event. Romance is the primary genre, but other books in other genres are free for SYKD as well. Several sources indicate that Romance Bookworms has sections on their SYKD listings specifically for BIPOC authors and for books that feature LGBTQ+ protagonists.
Romance Book Lovers is an unrelated group that is hosting a Romance Book Blast, with the next listed date as April 23.
The Cozy Mystery Book Club has coordinated several Cozy Mystery Book Blasts in the past, including in January of 2024, with the next event listed publicly as April 25.
Witchy Bookworms coordinates the Witchy Book Blast, which ran last on January 27 and already has the next date listed publicly as April 27.
Fantasy Book Dragons just ran their first "Stuff Your Kindle with Fantasy" event in January and have mentioned plans for another event in June with no date announced yet.
YA Bookworms runs a similar YA-focused event, the last one I can find info on happened on October 7. They also have a substack.
Terrify Your Tablet seems to run on October 31 only each year (This is the same event as Spook Your Kindle; they changed the name to clarify that it's not amazon-exclusive).
Thriller Blast appears to be a similar event for mystery, suspense, and thriller books, with a similar hook of waiting on an email announcement for dates and no clear indication on the landing page when the last event was held. I also wasn't able to confirm anyone participating it in via reddit, or anywhere else, so your guess is as good as mine.
Romance Audiobookworms also runs a similar event for audiobooks, Stuff Your Earbuds, with an event announced for spring but the date still unannounced, just like SYKD. This is still a relatively new event, unlike SYKD.
There's a lot of whining online about the quality of the books available for these events (especially SYKD, which I'm sure is unrelated to the fact that it's mostly romance and the general feelings most people have about romance as a genre), but the fact of the matter is that books available on kindle, especially for free, vary wildly in quality all the time no matter what. I've quit reading a lot of duds in the year I've owned an ereader, but I've read a lot of things I liked, too, and I assume the offerings for these events are a similar mixed bag.
Considering how many new events have cropped up in the past 18 months or so, I'll be excited to see in any new author groups decide to run similar promotions in the future or whether more groups decide to align with SYKD.

The goddess who saves the lives of others with her own palm, the firemen who rescue those who have been in an accident at the risk of their own lives, their courage and their ability to save is the reason why others do not die if they are caught in a fire or in an accident. International Firefighters Day is celebrated on May 4 every year to recognize and appreciate their work and to create awareness. It was established on January 4, 1999, after a proposal was made following the tragic deaths of five firefighters in a wildfire in Australia. The names of the deceased are Gary Vredveld, Chris Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong..!

Increasing popularity of Cycling Jersey!
There is no doubt that cycling jerseys are considered as the hottest as well as the sporty fashion trends that are available these days. Although these jerseys are designed well in original for cyclists, however there are several other sports enthusiasts that still use these jerseys as well. Moreover, such kind of jerseys are also used not just for any of the sports events, but they are also used in various outdoor activities.
These days, Cycling Jerseys Melbourne have become the rage amongst bikers, particularly among those who value both a fantastic style and a bit of playful self-expression in their riding attire. After Lance Armstrong and his player won the Tour de France trophy despite sporting Cycling Jersey Melbourne using an image of the old U.S. Mail emblem from almost 30 years ago, the trend reportedly took off.
Whether or not this is the genuine basis of their popularity, sales of Cycling Bib Shorts are increasing every day, especially as accessibility to purchasing them online becomes easier as a growing number of companies set up shop by placing e-commerce on their websites. Vintage cycling jerseys of Australian Cycling Apparel Brands can be obtained in an extensive selection of colours and designs. Today's vintage cycling jerseys feature a wide variety of pop culture icons, from Betty Boop and Bozo the Clown to Sesame Street regulars like Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird.
The retro image apparel company that offers the Best Cycling Bib Shorts Australia is an online shop that sells vintage bicycle jerseys with beautiful vintage graphics. Their collection relies on photographs from the 'Horton collection line,' which features well-known pictures like:
The 216-kilometer World Championship Men's Jersey Race of 1935, held in Belgium on the country's notoriously dangerous cobblestone streets.
Reproduction of Henri Grey's 1896 "Women's Phebus" cycling poster, featuring a female cyclist.
Men's Cataluna, a poster design from 1943 for a cycling competition in Spain known as the Vuelta Catalonia.
The Green Eggs and Ham jersey, a brightly coloured piece of clothing adorned with images of the characters and events from the Dr. Seuss story of the same name, which was first published in 1960.
The website and storefront of Amazon.com are a second wonderful place to find vintage cycling jerseys and there you can also find Cycling Bib Shorts Australia and novelty bike jerseys. Bike jerseys, along with other cycling apparel, footwear, and accessories, are widely available for purchase on Amazon. ModernBike.com is yet another retailer that provides a wide selection of both modern and vintage cycling jerseys, in addition to a wide selection of other cycle equipment, cycling apparel, Buy Cycling Bibs as well as the cycling accessories, and footwear.
You can also check out the wide selection of Cycling Apparel Online and novelty cycling jerseys available online if you want to have a little fun with your style as you ride. On the other hand, The retro image apparel company that offers the Best Cycling Bib Shorts Australia is an online shop that sells vintage bicycle jerseys with beautiful vintage graphics.

Above the table or Under the table
Imagine you’re being asked to design a country’s tax law. You have to be fair, but firm. You’d think the best approach is to simply tax a business based on its country of origin — See where it’s incorporated and let the tax authorities there take care of matters. However, what if you find out a company is incorporated elsewhere but seems to do a lot of business in your country. It’s only fair then that they pay their dues here. So you squeeze in an additional clause stating companies will have to pay taxes in your country so long as they have a fixed place of business through which they carry out the business of a foreign enterprise (in part or in full). You call it a Permanent Establishment and start taxing all this income.
What if the foreign country also taxes this income? After all, this company isn’t incorporated in your country. So, it’s only safe to presume that they’ll be taxed once again in the country of origin. To get around this problem, most countries sign Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAAs) with foreign nations in a bid to prevent this mess altogether. Meaning once you tax them in your country, they won’t have to pay their dues elsewhere.
Mastercard did most of its business in India through a Singapore Based enterprise — MasterCard Asia Pacific. Mastercard Asia Pacific set up a liaison office in India. This office hired all the staff and harboured assets that could help the company conduct its business in our country. The Indian tax authorities deemed this office as a Permanent Establishment. Mastercard agreed. And they paid taxes on all income accruing out of business conducted in India.
Until in 2014, when they switched things up. Mastercard restructured its Indian operations and transferred all the assets and staff from the liaison office to the subsidiary in Singapore. After the restructuring, the company stated they no longer had a Permanent Establishment in India. Their contention was simple. Even though they conducted business operations in India, the nature of this business post-restructuring was of a preparatory or an auxiliary character. Meaning the activities were of such insignificance that the authorities couldn’t possibly tax this income in India. Especially since the India-Singapore DTAA explicitly forbids it.
And so, Mastercard approached the Authority for Advance Rulings (AAR) — a quasi-judicial body to offer a binding ruling on the matter. The hope was that AAR would agree with their assessment. Unfortunately, they thought otherwise. Their argument was this — Granted you claim that you have no fixed place of business here anymore. But what about the Mastercard Interface Processors (MIPs) — those servers you’ve installed in every Indian Bank branch to route Mastercard related transactions to the global payment system. You use these systems to conduct taxable business in India. The banks pay your processing fee all thanks to the MIP. This income is royalty income that’s diverted to the Singapore entity. It has to be taxed in India.
Mastercard soon escalated the case to the Delhi High Court, and the matter is yet to be resolved. But wait! That’s not where this story ends.
Mastercard also had to contend with another problem — the equalization levy.
A retail store located in the UK can sell clothes directly to Indian customers without a single storefront or an actual salesperson. A gaming company located in Australia can have players all over the world congregate on its platform using remote servers. A streaming giant in the US can push its content digitally anywhere anytime, without a hitch.
So technically some businesses can render services in India without a physical presence and avoid paying taxes altogether. The government believed this was a travesty. So, on 1st April 2020, they decreed that foreign entities will have to pay a 2% levy on all digital transactions generated through the sale of goods and services in India. This tax will kick in when the goods or services are supplied to an Indian resident, or when they are ordered through an Indian IP address. So, if there are individuals and businesses out there ordering goods through say, an Amazon US or booking a hotel room through a foreign website, the customer is expected to pay a 2% tax on the finale sale price.
While you could contest that the foreign company isn’t actually bearing the burden here, it’s still bad for business since it’s affecting affordability.
And Mastercard…
Well, since the company offered services to Indian merchants, they fit the bill and there were liable to pay a 2% equalization levy on all revenues generated in India. So, whilst you're forcing them to pay taxes on all profits generated in India, you can’t possibly ask Mastercard to force their customers to pay an extra 2% (equalization levy) on the processing fee. That’s simply not tenable.
Task at hand:
You are the regional head (division president) of Mastercard India and you have a meeting tomorrow with top officials from Indian Tax Authority.
Come up with a background story and reason why Mastercard MIP’s weren’t taxed in India earlier.
Strategies to convince the India Tax Authority that Mastercard won’t be paying Equalization levy of 2% if it starts paying taxes on MIP’s.
Influencing the officials to reduce the penalty (undisclosed amount) and close the case as it is affecting the reputation of the company in India.
PR strategies on how Mastercard plans to increase brand awareness in the country and compete with Visa.
Creatives

#1yrago Amazon bars Australians from shopping on its non-Aussie sites to put pressure on the government to rescind tax rule
Australian retailers are required to collect 10% Value Added Tax on every sale; Amazon's Australia store collects this tax, but the company has rejected any suggestion that its non-Australian stores should collect the tax on shipments bound for Australia.
After a long-fought battle that pitted Australian retailers against Amazon, the Australian government passed a rule requiring that Amazon collect and remit the 10% VAT on its worldwide sales to Australians. Rather than comply, Amazon has blocked Australians from shopping anywhere except its Australian storefront.
From what I can tell, the Australian government did a reasonably good job of implementing this rule. The alternative is to hold international purchases in customs warehouses and send tax-demands to the purchasers, along with a handling fee (often $5-10), which may have to be paid in person after lining up at a post-office. Such a system (which is pretty typical around the world) would have a much more negative effect on Amazon's sales than merely assessing the tax on global purchases when the shipping address is in Australia.
Amazon clearly sees this as the thin edge of the wedge, though, and doesn't want to get in a position of having to collect variable rates of tax depending on the shipping address for, say, 180 countries (or even thousands of states and provinces with their own VATs). This would be a tiresome set of business rules and accounting practices for Amazon to set up, but it's hardly back-breaking labor for a firm with entire buildings full of accountants who are already extremely attentive to the minutae of tax rules all over the world as they chase the most tax-advantageous way to book Amazon's income and and avoid paying tax on it.
Moreover, Amazon already attends to far more fine-grained regional restrictions than mere sales-tax rules, tracking on a country-by-country basis who can buy books, stream videos, or purchase gadgets where there are exclusive territorial rights deals. If Amazon can figure out whether a contractual arrangement struck 20 years ago at the Frankfurt Book Fair allows an Australian to buy one individual book out of ten million books at all of their worldwide stores, they can certainly keep track of whether they need to charge that Australian sales tax before they sell it to them.

Disaster Relief
2020 has not been the best of years. I know that many had hoped the start of a new decade would bring new dreams and hopes. It was a time to set new goals and to make the best of a rough few years.
Alas, in these first few months, we’ve battled pandemics, watched Britain leave the European Union and read about Trump’s impeachment trials.
In Australia, many of our states had experienced terrifying bushfires that were mostly due to climate change. And even now, rural towns and those industries reliant on trades such as hospitality are struggling. Is it any wonder that a short story emerged from these joint experiences?
Unfortunately, this isn’t a happy-go-lucky story. But I wanted to explore and not forget about the people that are still doing it tough in these times.
Here’s a brief snippet of the story. The rest can be found on my Fictionpress account: https://www.fictionpress.com/s/3345997/1/Disaster-Relief

16 September
The lilac purple of the summer was slowly beginning to fade. In their place, the leaves of the deciduous trees, painstakingly planted so many years ago, were beginning to change. It should have enticed droves of tourists into the mountains. Hundreds upon thousands. Business should have been booming. But the fires had seen to that. If they hadn’t destroyed businesses or homes, they had blanketed the entire region in a hateful smog.
What should have been a flood was but a mere trickle. Even when the rain came, people were hesitant. And only a few brave souls had cared to risk the visit up the mountains to the small town I call home.
I can’t rightly blame them. Anyone would be fearful. People’s memories are long and it was only a month ago when so many lives had been lost to the flames. I heard there was an inquest, actually, into the whole reason behind the fires: whether it was poor reduction practices or arsonists. It’s all bullshit.
How long have we been in drought? How many years has it been when it seemed like summer would never end? The answer is staring us right in the face but our politicians are refusing to call it for what it is: climate change!
Sometimes when I watch the news, I just want to throw a bottle at the smug expression on the president’s face. He has no idea what it’s like to see small local business close up shop. To see friends and neighbours move away, giving up the dream of a lifetime. Or entire family lineages uprooted.
This wasn’t just a bad year.
It was a complete and utter clusterfuck.
Sorry. I’m just trying to get my feeling down. Writing all this down is new to me. But I read somewhere online that it might help with all the anger. God. My family can’t even afford a fucking therapist.
Is it any wonder that some of the younger kids, still fresh out of high school, are going out for joyrides and lapping it up at the bar despite being underage? I heard from the local sheriff that it’s only going to get worse. Vandalism now, break-ins and property damage in just a few weeks.
My family has been lucky. Dad had been saving up a small nest egg just for emergencies. We’ll be able to live all right for a while. If business doesn’t pick up soon, though, we might just be like the others. Forgotten.
I haven’t told my family but I set up a storefront on Etsy, Ebay and Amazon. It might help keep us afloat because we deal with unique and quirky items. Yet, I can’t help feeling that it won’t be enough. It’s hard to stand out on those kinds of sites. A picture might be worth a thousand words, but it’s not the same as holding a hand carved trinket and feeling the weight in the palm of your hand.

Amazon Australia : A Complete Guide
Are you considering launching an Amazon FBA company in Australia? If so, you've arrived to the correct place. This manual will assist you in becoming familiar with the fundamentals of Amazon AU FBA selling, including why sell in Australia, how to register for the marketplace, what to consider when assessing a product for listing, where to get a trustworthy and affordable supplier, and much more. Let's start with the fundamentals before we get right in. What is FBA on Amazon? An Amazon fulfillment program for sellers is called FBA. It enables you to transport your merchandise to Amazon warehouses, where it is picked, packaged, and shipped to your consumers for a modest cost by Amazon employees. With the FBA program, even returns and refunds are taken care of by Amazon, thereby automating a major portion of your operation. Running a private label or wholesale company on Amazon in this way is the most practical. The second selling option on Amazon is known as Fulfillment by Merchant and is somewhat less common (FBM). You are in charge of handling the logistics in this situation, including product storage, delivery to clients, and timely refund processing. Most dropshipping sellers and those that deal with heavier commodities favor this strategy. Is Amazon Fulfillment available in Australia? Since 2018, Amazon has made its FBA services available in Australia. It only had one fulfillment center at the time, and it was in Melbourne's Dandenong South. Selling on Amazon FBA in Australia has additional advantages, such as: Minimal oppositionThe Australian market is still in its infancy compared to other Amazon markets. There won't be many sellers vying for the top positions in a certain niche. With less competitors nearby, building your brand is much simpler. Low-budget launchesYou don't require a significant expenditure to launch a product in Australia because there is less competition. You may get started with a reasonably low investment, which is a luxury for merchants on the established Amazon marketplaces in the US, UK, Japan, and other countries. Effective MeasuresAmazon is aware that it needs to entice more vendors if it is to overtake eBay as Australia's top online marketplace. As a result, it has taken a more forgiving stance toward sellers, and will likely not terminate your account or punish the listing even if you break some of its rules.Of course, this does not imply that you can or ought to cross certain lines. Amazon isn't as severe as it would be in the US or UK markets, that's all it implies. No monopoly of AmazonThere are many product categories in the US and UK markets, with Amazon itself being the largest seller. Due to this, price competition with Amazon is all but impossible. To uncover effective keywords for your listing, use Keyword Spotlight and Keywords on Fire. Once you're finished, click Save and Finish. How Do I Set My Product Prices? A listing's ability to sell can make or ruin it. If you raise it too high, you risk losing clients. If you set it too low, you can find it difficult to bring any money home once all of the expenses have been paid. Incorrect pricing can cause your item to drop in the rankings. The ideal approach is to copy what your rivals are doing, and if you can, attempt to maintain your price point below the going rate for the market. How can I promote my FBA goods? You can use paid promotions to market your product in addition to having it rank naturally on Amazon. To increase traffic to your listing, try using several ad types including Sponsored Product advertisements, Video ads, and Display ads. Additionally, you can request evaluations from your clients, which may boost your marketing efforts. But refrain from requesting glowing recommendations. Amazon may suspend your account if this happens. What Not To Do When Selling on Australian Amazon Mistakes do occur. They are inherent to life. The Amazon Marketplace is a great place to sell used books, music CDs, and instructional DVDs, but mistakes are not a good strategy to grow your used book business. Believing that the client wanted a thank-you note. The original plan was to establish a rapport with customers who made purchases from us in order to encourage them to visit my Amazon Bookstore page and acquire additional goods from a contented customer. However, Amazon owns the consumer, not us. The Terms of Service (TOS) of Amazon permit the addition of a "Thank You" remark, but it doesn't assist you in making money. What Errors Should Be Avoided When Selling on Australian Amazon? Avoid markets where major brands predominate since it will be difficult to find the products at a price that is profitable. Ignore categories that are focused on generic merchandise aimed at both sexes, such as apparel. Conclusion Australian clients have long been making purchases from US and UK websites. Although still quite few, the number of clients has dramatically increased during the past six to twelve months. It actually keeps growing, which is extremely concerning for other Australian retailers. Although many businesses are employing various techniques to compete with Amazon, many retailers are still unsure on how and where to begin. Market observers agree that Amazon's entry into Australia was a significant statement and that its impact on the retail industry will undoubtedly be one of the biggest ever. Knowing the brand, the product, the target demographic, and the online marketplace that could result in the most sales can therefore make a significant difference in the success of the company.
