Good Golly Miss Amazon Molly!
The Amazon molly (Poecilia formosa) is a species of fish found only in the Tuxpan River, the Rio Grande, and the Nueces River in northern Mexico and the southern United States. Within these rivers, P. formosa typically prefers slower moving streams and ditches with plenty of vegetation, and are usually found in freshwater systems.
Amazon mollies are rather small and plain. The body is teardrop-shaped, and adults only grow up to 10 cm (3 in) long. They are mainly silver in color, although they may have rows of small, light brown spots running down their sides. In addition, some individuals may have black spots along their dorsal and tail fins.
Like most other mollies, the Amazon molly is an omnivore. They may feed on algae, seaweed, insects, and mosquito larvae. In turn, they themselves can be prey for larger aquatic insects like giant water bugs, other fishes, alligators, frogs, egrets and herons, and racoons. To avoid predators, P. formosa tends to stay in groups where it is less easy to be singled out.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Amazon molly are its reproductive habits. This species is entirely female, and reproduces via a process called gynogenesis. First, females are courted by males from other molly species such as P. latipinna, P. mexicana, P. latipunctata, or P. sphenops. Mating triggers the release of eggs, but the male's sperm is destroyed before it can fertilize them. Instead, the male gets the advantage of increased attractiveness to females of their own species, as these females are more likely to mate with males that have already mated with P. formosa.
After mating, the female broods her eggs for 30-40 days. She then gives live birth to anywhere from 60 to 100 fry, which are all clones of their mother. These young recieve no further parental care, but are fairly independent and are fully capable of reproduction after about 1-6 months, depending on the temperature of the water; warmer waters increase the rate of maturity. Individuals can live anywhere from 1-3 years in the wild.
Conservation status: the IUCN considers the Amazon molly to be Least Concern. However, one of the species that are used to trigger reproduction, the broadspotted molly (Poecilia latipunctata) is Critically Endangered. Primary threats to the Amazon molly include habitat degradation or loss due to construction and damming.
If you like what I do, consider leaving a tip or buying me a ko-fi!

BOTD: Yellow-headed Parrot
Photo: Ami Nia PapaMossi
"Because it can be trained to imitate human speech, this chunky parrot has been popular in the cage bird trade. As a result, it is now endangered in the wild. Formerly widespread in Mexico and northern Central America, it is thought to have declined by 90 percent in it native range. Escaped cage birds have established feral flocks around Los Angeles and San Diego, California, and locally in southern Florida. The few seen in southern Texas are probably escapees also, although some might possibly be wild strays from the population in Mexico."

the Hulurama episodes suck so bad holy shit.
#every single episode is just 'how do you do fellow kids'#futurama is best when its being an extrapolative satire not a satire on things that are happening now#i dont need futurama to make fun of nfts or covid or amazon!#im already doing that right now in real life!#the worst of the comedy central era was the beginning when they immediately hit you with the iphone parodies and stuff#like thats not the future thats right now#the later comedy central episodes were so much better because they focus on the characters#and their relationships and the world#but no they gotta jump right out of the gate with the how do you do fellow kids bits#the only silver lining is freela is in its marriage engagement era which honestly has some super cute moments#futurama#shiv.txt

K, you know what? I'm gonna say it. I think this new Julian character should date Bart. I don't typically have preferences when it comes to shipping (and tbh if Bart got another love interest I'd be for it too) but I think DC should confirm Bart as Queer and that's sure as fuck not happening without a love interest (unless they pull a Hawke which I would love but unfortunately life isn't that nice to me)
DC isn't gonna fuck with other 'families' so they'd either keep the love interest in house or make up a new person but uhhhhh Jules is honorary Flash fam and a Force user. And a Central resident. Dude does rodeo shows. Jules is a country boy. Bart is a country boy.
I just, I don't know, I think it'd work!
Also I don't want Julian to have the same fate as Jess and Hartley and literally only get featured during pride month. Setting up a mini series or something would be good for the character I think. I really like Jules and I want him to stick around and be in stuff.
#Bart's most common love interests are Carol Preston Tim Kon and Ed#but Carol and Preston haven't shown up since Impulse and likely won't unless Impulse comes back#Tim has his own thing going on and Kon would require DC making ALL of YJ queer. because lets be real Cassie is an Amazon#and idk if dc would do that? after Justice League Queer idk if i WANT them to do that. theyd be weird about it i think#and Ed is great in YJA but in the comics him and Bart haven't met and he's a different guy#so I'd love it but i don't think itd work. kinda like how Jackson falls flat when compared to Kaldur'ahm#its just different and it won't be the same you know?#so yeah i think Bart just needs a new person and hey! here's a Central City resident with a Flash obsession with similar and opposite#powers! its great!#they're the same age and I think itd be great#but thats just my two cents on it#dc#dc comics#the flash#kid flash#impulse#bart allen

haha so cute, amazon making a little joke about their disgusting multi-industry dominance in the trailer for the new show about how capitalist imperialist hubris exploded the world haha so quirky & definitely not a bad omen about how the show will handle the subject matter!
#fallout#look i aint immune to propaganda i am cautiously excited for this show#but my expectations are already more subterranean than a vault & this little trailer moment isnt helpful#one day amazon will be destroyed & i pray i am alive to bear witness#the bethesda fanboys are already mad that a thin hot cis white woman is playing one (1) central role#and i hope for all our sakes that we get a gay ella purnell performance in this to piss them off properly#*kicks the dirt* probably wont be any gay with our current 1 luck stat#the costuming and effects look... okay. still mad they yassified the ghouls & ive seen better backyard cosplay PA but big fan of the geckos

The Beautiful Boto
Also known as the Amazon river dophin or the pink river dolphin, the boto (Inia geoffrensis) is a species of toothed whale native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in South America. Because they reside mainly in rivers, lakes and mangroves, the boto occupies a large range; nearly 7 million square kilometers (435 thousand square miles). Despite being related to whales and dolphins, I. geoffrensis cannot tolerate saltwater and is only found in freshwater.
The Amazon river dolphin is the largest of the four river dolphin species, weighing in at 98-185 kg (215-407 lbs) and measuring 1 to 2.5 m (4-8 ft) in length. Males are larger than females, and are a bright pink to the females’ dull grey. A significant part of the length comes from the dolphin’s distinctive long snout, which is used to hunt for crustaceans and small fish. The boto’s body is designed to be highly flexible, which comes in handy when navigating through flooded forests. One adaptation in particular that makes I. geoffrensis stand out is the unfused neck vertebrae, which allows them to bend at up to a 90-degree angle. Botos also use echolocation to navigate murky river waters. which is enhanced by the large melon on their foreheads.
Breeding for the pink river dophin occurs between May and June, during the rainy season when flooding is at its peak. Males will fight for access to females, and will also perform courtship displays that involve carrying a number of objects-- like branches, fish, or even live turtles-- and slapping them into the water. Successful pregnancies last 11 months, and after giving birth mothers raise their young in the slow-moving waters of flooded forests. Weaning takes about a year, although mother-child pairs will often stay together for much longer. The average lifespan of the boto can be anywhere from 10 to 26 years, as they have no natural predators.
Outside the mating season, I. geoffrensis is a solitary creature. It’s rare to see groups of more than three at a time, and do not heavily defend set territories. However, they are very curious and have been known to readily approach canoes or play with debris in the water. Individuals have also been seen hunting fish in loose cooperation with other species like giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis). The bota is crepuscular, active mainly at dawn or dusk, and generally stay close to the surface of the water. Deep dives are rare, as they can only hold their breath for 110 seconds.
Conservation status: Hunting pressure and pollution, as well as dam building and deforestation, are major threats to the amazon river dolphin, which has been classified as Endangered by the IUCN. Conservation efforts are being made, but the species is difficult to keep or breed in captivity so most work is being done in the wild.
If you like what I do, consider leaving a tip or buying me a kofi!
