A PSA about the latest Vulture article to drop about Neil Gaiman -
Do not fucking read it if you are not in a stable state of mind.
Triggers include, but dare I say, are not limited to -
Sexual assault and misconduct
Anal, digital, oral, and vaginal rape
Forced urine/faeces consumption
Vomit/forced vomit consumption
Financial abuse
Gaslighting and manipulation
Sexual conduct in front of a minor (NG's son)
Sexual humiliation and degradation
Disordered eating, anorexia, and bulemia
Suicide, suicidal ideation
Self-harm
Child abuse
Scientology
Cult abuse
Drowning
Corporeal punishment
Intentionally painful penetration
Exploitation
Grooming
COVID-19
Classism
Overt and implied threats of homelessness
Endangerment of vulnerable women by parties who knew or suspected harmful behaviour/complicity in harmful behaviour
Homophobia - specifically, disregarding stated LGBTQIA+ identity during proposition/advances
Most of these things are discussed in explicit detail multiple times.
To be very clear, the above is not a list of allegations, it is subjects that are mentioned within the article. Yes, some of them are the allegations, but not all.
It's harrowing and heartbreaking to read. Even if these are not specifically triggers of yours, I beg, take a second to really have a think about whether you're in a place to take this on.

oh and btw, it's fuck neil gaiman till the end times. and fuck amanda palmer too.
to brand yourself as a feminist, as this tender writer, and then assault women in some of the most vile and disgusting ways i have ever heard of... not to mention being A WOMAN, KNOWING your husband has priors of this nature, and you willingly bring in new girls and then manipulate them to take hush money... VILE.
fuck neil gaiman & fuck amanda palmer for all eternity.

i can't get over Amanda Palmer's complicity and how nonchalantly she admitted to the victims' faces that she knew her husband was a rapist before leaving them alone with him. like i was a fan of Gaiman for years and so of course i knew of her, and i always felt her whole "im a punk rock feminist icon" schtick was annoying and performative but she seemed harmless. i never could've imagined she would be this fucking awful. get the kid out of there bc neither one of them should have custody

This part of the article breaks my heart:
Pavlovich assured them Palmer would participate. “I said to them, ‘She’s a public feminist, and she knows what happened. She’ll want to protect me. I’m sure she’ll speak.’” When the police contacted Palmer later that year, she declined to talk with them.

Amanda Palmer KNEW Scarlett Pavlovich would be alone with Neil Gaiman that first day. Palmer made the play date for her son. Amanda Palmer is not a hapless innocent in this. Fourteen women had complained to her about her husband’s behavior, and she did nothing.

Imagine having to rely on Amanda Palmer to not act like a self-absorbed narcissist for once in her life.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for the women who came forward with the allegations against Neil Gaiman. Their stories (particularly those of Scarlett Pavlovich, Kendra Stout and Caroline) are utterly horrific, and their bravery and resilience in discussing the heinous things they suffered at the hands of Gaiman (and Amanda Palmer) cannot be overstated. I hope that all of these women live happy and successful lives going forward, and that no one suffers at the hands of this depraved predator ever again.
(And to any victims of his that have not come forward yet or who will never feel ready to come forward, your experiences are just as valid and your courage/perseverance is just as strong.)

Honestly, Amanda Palmer's belief in not distinguishing between friends and fans and thinking it's enlightened kinda reminds me of the pre-2010s era of people thinking "colorblindness" was the ultimate anti-racist sentiment. Like, just because you believe in total equality as an aspiration doesn't mean inequality doesn't exist and acting like it doesn't will make it go away. It doesn't matter if you think you're nothing special, no better than anyone else, not that famous, not that successful, not that talented, etc... when the other person looks up to you, hangs off your every word, desperately needs your validation, would do anything for your attention, would be torn to shreds by your fanbase if they ever said a word against you, could be blacklisted from their dream career if they lost your favor, etc... You don't get to choose who you have power over and you can't relinquish that power just by declaring you don't want it. People are going to give it to you whether you seek it out or not and you have a responsibility to recognize that and respond to it by making ethical decisions.
And that's assuming the sentiment is genuinely extremely naive idealism and not just an excuse made by a charismatic sociopath to frame their exploitation of their vulnerable fans as "just friends doing favors for each other".

Neil Gaiman should be fucking drawn and quartered in a public square. the vulture article is one of the most horrific accounts of sexual abuse i've ever read in my life. disgusting and depraved beyond comprehension. i can't wrap my head around how this man wrote such warm and empathetic and thoughtful stories and preached for years about inclusivity and representation and championed fans etc etc only to have been doing this utterly depraved shit behind closed doors. i genuinely feel physically ill. kill him. and Amanda Palmer too for knowing and not only staying silent, but pushing vulnerable women his way too. she's an accomplice and they will both rot in hell.

Did I mention I was a fan of Amanda Palmer before I was a fan of Neil Gaiman? I don't feel anger. I'm just so tired.
If the paywall comes up, try to put the link into this: https://www.removepaywall.com
Posting in the spirit of not staying quiet about this.
I strongly suggest you read this—all of it, because it’s long. Lila Shapiro is the journalist who wrote the investigation into Joss Whedon btw and won an award for it, so maybe people can finally stop making this all about Tortoise Media.

Where I've basically landed with this whole Neil Gaiman situation:
It sucks that Neil Gaiman seems to have had a very abusive childhood being raised by two parents very high up in Scientology. Sounds like there's issues he should've started working on a long time ago.
That abusive childhood does not excuse or absolve him of any of the acts of sexual abuse/assault he's committed against multiple women. I'm glad to hear that these women are in contact with each other so if nothing else, they'll at least be able to support each other in processing these traumas.
If you're a fan of Amanda Palmer, do not, under any circumstance, do free labor for this woman. She's proven more than willing to exploit her relationship with her fans which has led who knows how many of them to become victims of Neil Gaiman.

I've just seen a post where somebody said
"Judge neil gaiman more harshly because his work reflects that he knows how to be a decent person, he just chooses to be the opposite"
And
I couldn't have put it any better myself.
Fuck Neil Gaiman. Fuck Amanda Palmer.

I will add to this that I have read the Vulture article, and Amanda Palmer doesn't come out looking well, either.
So the same advice listed above holds true for fans of her work as well.
And yes, please, take care of yourself *first*. Don't read the article(s) if the content is going to retraumatize you.
Anyway, more verified reporting on Neil Gaiman is out and it's real bad, folks, it just is. I'm not going to link it here, but there are plenty of free links floating around.
I cannot stress this enough, if the topic of sexual assault and graphic details are going to be severely distressing for you, please do not read it. That is not something you have to do to yourself. You do not have to do penance for finding his work meaningful, previously praised it, or enjoyed interacting with him on Tumblr. This is not on you. No one needs that from you, no matter how it may feel.
If this is personally devastating, you can (and should!) take some time to process it. You don't owe the internet a hot take or force yourself to feel the right emotion. Just take a break until you find the right headspace to be in. Please take care of yourselves.
