I’m not the biggest fan of zombie films, especially when they’re by-the-numbers brain-eating gore-fests, or tired re-treads of ‘humanity is the real monster’ trope (looking at you, “The Walking Dead”) so I’m pleased to say that Jim Jarmusch has avoided all of those tired clichĂ©s with his trademark mischievous wit.

#MeToo: More Than a Hashtag
Tumblr media
#Me Too
A hashtag with just five letters, “Me Too”, holds so much power. #MeToo swooped social media around the globe for the past two years since 2017. With its exceptional ability to spread information timelessly and widely, the #MeToo movement has become a model for the new practice of interconnected communication in media. It liberated unheard voices, it proliferated the prosumer culture, and it gave the power to a social movement for a change.
Following the famous New York Times’s breaking story of actress Ashley Judd’s accusation of Harvey Weinstein and Alyssa Milano’s tweet in 2017, without a doubt, social media has had and continues to have a significant impact in expanding the Me Too movement. As reported in the “Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2019”, most people today access news contents through social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.), and it is clear for the case of Me Too that journalism and various social media platforms worked together to spread the urgency to solve the issues of sexual violence.
This new method of intertwined communication between the content producers and consumers cultivated an active engagement, which then led to activism and social changes. In countries like China, even with government censorship, the public’s dedicated participation “creatively spread discussions on sexual harassment cases on social media and saved censored information through screenshots and blockchains” (Repnikova and Zhou, para. 3). Yes, this article, “#MeToo movement in China: Powerful yet fragile”, highlights the challenges of further enlarging the Me Too movement facing the limited freedom of spreading information. Though, it underlines the significance of the public’s determined participation through social media that allowed “the seeds of activism planted in the pre-Xi era continue to grow”(Repnikova and Zhou, para. 12).
Tumblr media
Graph from Statistics Canada’s report, “Police-reported sexual assaults in Canada before and after #MeToo, 2016 and 2017″ by Cristine Rotenberg and Adam Cotter.
Exemplified by the #Me Too movement, hashtags in today’s world clearly aren’t just a combination of words. They are political. They carry out the potential to generate social changes. According to Statistics Canada, there has been a sharp increase in numbers of police-reported sexual assault cases after #MeToo in 2017 (Statistics Canada, 16). This evidence measures the success of the Me Too movement’s vision, “[to] de-stigmatize the act of surviving by highlighting the breadth and impact of a sexual violence” (Me Too, para. 2). Plan International, a not for profit organization that advocate for empowering girls and rights for children, through its online survey has found positive impacts that #Me Too brought to the individuals, specifically young girls and women in Canada: The majority of survey respondents believe that movements like Me Too became the source of empowerment for women and girls for sharing their experiences and had a positive impact on building more safe and equal environments in schools and workplaces.

Image from Plan International’s article, “This International Women’s Day, Plan International Canada Releases New Data Highlighting the Behavioural Impact of the #MeToo Movement”.
The viral #Me Too movement begun as the shocking “spill the truth” stories revealed to the public by investigative journalists. Soon then, with the social media’s capability to spread contents, celebrities, supporters and individual survivors transformed it into activism that fostered social changes. This enablement of participatory prosumer culture introduced the interconnected flow of information and its powers to make a difference from bottom-up.
As Tarana Burke said, “[Me Too] is bigger than a moment. It’s the confirmation that we are in a movement.”
