Altars
Tumblr media
A witch's alar is a divine place. it's unique and sacred. There will never be 2 of the same. Each altar is personal, one of a kind. Most altars, however, will have similar or the same items, such as a cauldron, candles, an athame (a small blade), and a symbol to represent the craft of the individual (pentagram, flower of life, etc.). There is no set of items to make an altar an altar.
You do not need to go out of you way to get expensive for specific items for your space. You may only need a regular bowl as the cauldron and some herbs with a grimoire. Another's space may have incense or a smelly candle. Some alters are decorated for the season, special festivals, items for specific deities or even spell jars. Should you want to decorate your dedicated space traditionally, it would have a specific layout, particularly during spell work.
How to Set Up an Altar
Typically, a cloth will be placed on the table (but it isn't a necessity). A pentacle/pentagram will be placed on the table and there will be 4 corners to represent the elements.
North = Earth = crystals, bowl of salt, a plant
East = Air = incense or/and burner
South = Fire = candles or something that holds a flame
West = Water = a body of water (bowl or cup).
Other witches may have many more objects on their alter, or they may keep it minimal. If an individual works with deities, they may included a candle or item to hold a space on the altar for that particular spirit/deity. Items also differ based on their belief system.
Most commonly, witches use:
Pictures or statues of the deity to honour them, or/and a symbolic item to represent their certain God, should they work with or worship one.
A chalice may be used to represent the feminine aspect in the Great Rite (Wicca), which is usually filled with wine, juice or spring water.
A bell can be used to mark the start and end of a ritual or used to sound cleanse a space.
The Athame is a blade to represent the male or masculine of the Great Rite, to direct energies and cut doorways in the circle. Also can be used in rituals to 'cut ties' energetically and spiritually with another person.
A wand to direct energies and create the temple of the protective circle (usually cast before doing spell work)
Crystals to promote, banish or maintain specific energies.

Altars do not need to be in one spot or a specific way. Altars can be spread out over shelves, tables or even over several rooms. Alternatively, they can even be pocket sized for your own convenience! It's your space - make it how you like it and what works for you and your situation. An Altar is designed and tailored to fit the witch using it.
Some witches don't even have altars, but most do. Altars are not a necessity in your craft and neither is what you put on it, so there should be no pressure as to make one.

West Dean artworks

I took a watercolour course at West Dean College this week. What a fabulous collection of of objet's d'art they have, just lying around in their corridors. Tapestries designed by Rubens.

☪ (Remy, matt)
[send a thing, get a dream || accepting]
It's quiet in the cathedral, sunset streaming in through the stained glass to color the pews and the floor in a living rainbow. The place smells of candlesmoke and incense, as though mass has just ended; the altarcloth is pristine and gleaming in a combination of sun and candle-light…truly a beautiful scene. Peaceful. Pure.
A voice is praying softly, familiar words, spoken with genuine feeling rather than mere habit. Our father, who art in heaven… It's a prayer Remy knows by heart. And he knows the cadence, the rhythm, how it sounds when spoken on its own as opposed to now, spoken as part of a rosary.
He's not sure when he figured out Matt is Catholic, but it's one more thing they have in common. And now here's Matt, seated in one of the pews, head bowed, beads in hand. Praying. For what, Remy doesn't know. Absolution, perhaps? Forgiveness? But those won't be found simply by praying.
Remy reaches down to touch Matt's shoulder in silence. There's no need for words here. Just why, Remy neither knows nor cares; he just knows they're not needed. The praying stops at his touch, Matt looking up from behind those round, dark glasses he always wears. Remy's sorely tempted to remove them, to take a look at the sightless eyes the conceal, but not this time. Not this time.
Instead he simply guides Matt up, leads him out of the pew and down the aisle towards the altar. The rosary gets wound carefully around Matt's wrists, around a heavy candlestick as Remy guides him forward to bend over the altar itself. If Matt truly wishes to pray, to earn whatever forgiveness or peace he seeks, then let him try and earn it. How well can he focus on his prayers with Remy unfastening his slacks, working them down? How long will it take Matt to cry more fully to God?
How long will it take before that pristine altar cloth is no longer unstained?
Remy never finds out; as much as he tries to cling to the dream the light streaming in through his apartment window draws him out of sleep and back to the waking world. He lies there for a moment, staring at the empty side of his bed - though he generally sleeps alone Remy still has a king-sized bed purely for the luxury of it - before just chuckling softly and shaking his head. Hell of a dream…but maybe one worth revisiting for a little while longer, if his imagination can pick up where the dream itself left off.

Introducing The Third Eye Tarot Cloth
Hi, I’m Lily, an independent artist and psychic reader living in the Pacific Northwest. I’m excited to be announcing my first big design project, the Third Eye Tarot Cloth, coming to Kickstarter this April.
This project has been in the works for awhile and your support would help me begin living out my dream of sharing my art with the world!
About
The Third Eye Tarot Cloth is designed to incorporate some magic into your daily life! It can be used as a tarot cloth, altar cloth, or even as a bandana to add some witchy vibes to your outfit. This piece (and the accompanying stickers, prints, and other designs that I’ll soon be sharing) are designed with intention and love and are all created by me. Each tarot cloth will be 22”x22” and will be printed in the U.S. on 100% cotton. The printing run will be limited, so if the design speaks to you, be sure to follow my page or sign up for the Third Eye Tarot email list for launch updates! And of course, feel free to get in touch to ask any questions 🧿
Sign up here to be notified of the Kickstarter launch date

the dream clung to my conciousness, visions of searching muddy waters for crystals and items of worth. around noon i decided to make the trek, feeling called further than i’d previously been. the river, huge and stately, beckoned.
the driftwood has a perfect shelf to burn insence and cleansing smudges, and the rock holds personal significance in its shape and elements. i’m very thankful for how perfectly these items will fit with the rest of what i’ve collected. (items that quite naturally appeared, seemingly under my nose.)

New altar cloths for this Sunday’s update at 8pm ET! 🌙 Over the last few years I’ve saved all of the antique linens I’ve found that had floral embroidery in hopes of one day creating a spring collection in honor of Floralia and Beltane. This is the year! As with all of my one-of-a-kind altar cloths, each is an antique linen that has been dyed by hand here in the studio and screen printed with the Printshop’s original artwork. This handmade transformation ensures each cloth is totally unique and one-of-a-kind, never to be duplicated! Because of this, there are a limited number available and they usually sell out fast, so be sure to set an alarm if you want to get one. Also, keep an eye on my stories for more previews as the update nears! 🔮 #poisonappleprintshop #antiquemeetshandmade #altarcloth #witchaltar https://www.instagram.com/p/Cck35Kxr6Qr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
