New video essay! On the Reverse Gish Gallop - how conservatives can ignore 90% of your argument and still appear to be winning.
If you would like more of this, subscribe to Nebula and/or back me on Patreon!
Transcript below the cut.
Say, for the sake of argument, you’re watching a political debate on TV. The conservative candidate has used their opening arguments to dump a truckload of dubious claims on their opponent. You recognize this maneuver: that’s the Gish Gallop! The debater makes point after dubious point, and, if the other debater doesn’t rebut every single one, they will appear to have lost the argument. These points don’t have to be good or hard to disprove, there just has to be a lot of them.
Oh, but what’s this? The liberal candidate seems to have come prepared! That’s new! They succinctly and efficiently dismantle each of their opponent’s arguments, offering a clear rebuttal to every single one. It’s obviously not the first time they’ve heard this particular gallop. So, the conservative’s petard has just fully hoisted them. [“What a hoisting!”] They’ve just lost their own game and have to go on the defensive… right?
Turns out, no! The conservative points to a minor error - maybe the liberal said their program would cost $40 million but is actually estimated to cost 43 - and treats them as an ignorant sap who can’t even count correctly. That is now the subject, everything else has been forgotten, and the liberal is backpedaling.
Wait, you exclaim, how does that work?! The liberal has to rebut each and every point but the conservative takes issue with one and stays in the driver’s seat? Are audiences fooled by this? Are liberals that easily snookered? The answer may shock you!
You’ve just borne witness to The Reverse Gish Gallop, where an entire argument falls apart if any of it can be disputed. These disputes, again, don’t have to be good, they just have to call the airtightness of the argument into question.
A good example is how conservatives obsess over gaffes. (Which, fuckin’... really guys?? [W, Trump]) Some Democrat will be all “conservatives want to shut down post offices as a form of vote suppression; they’re pushing voter ID laws and the post office is where many people get IDs; also we are relying more and more heavily on mail-in voting; they overwhelmingly try to shut down offices in Black and Latine neighborhoods; a lot of services like healthcare and courts still use physical mail by default and there can be serious consequences to getting it late; many elderly people still don’t use email, and, hey, maybe some of them like getting junk mail” “AH BA BA BA THAT’S IT THAT’S YOUR WHOLE LIFE NOW FOR THE REST OF YOUR CAREER YOU’RE THE ASSHOLE WHO SAID OLD PEOPLE LIKE JUNK MAIL.”
Your mistake was assuming that dishonest people abide by the same rules they impose on everyone else. When I was a teenager, some friends of the family would invite me along when they asked my parents to dinner, because I would play with their five-year-old and let the grown-ups chat in peace. And he’d make up games where we’d bat a balloon back and forth or whatever, and change the rules on the fly when it suited him. Because the rule wasn’t actually “you can only touch the balloon once per turn;” the rule was “Andrew wins.”
The purpose of a Gish Gallop is to establish a narrative not through argument or logic but force and volume. Once established, it takes a lot less effort for them to maintain than for you to establish a new one. If they shake confidence in your argument, the audience will often revert to the previous argument, whether or not that one was ever proven. It’s a not about which story is true, it’s about who sets the parameters for all stories going forward; who got there first. This is not a debate; this is a Zerg Rush. Understand: a dishonest argument is Lego - you haven’t dismantled it until every brick is separated. But an honest rebuttal? An honest rebuttal is Jenga.

Yes, and stop acting as though whether you successfully label his gesture a Nazi salute is what determines whether someone is a Nazi. If someone has gone on how his “Asperger's” makes him superior to “low functioning autistic” people, and why he and people like him should be having as many babies as possible with as many people as possible, and boosts posts that “prove” the “white race”'s superiority to Jewish/Black/Asian/whichever other group of people, that is Nazi behavior. You don't need to wait for someone to say a special Bad Word or do a special Bad Gesture.
Moreover, if you base your Nazi identification on whether they said a Bad Word or did a Bad Gesture, you will lose every time. The entire point of dogwhistles is you can plausible deniability your way out of them for days, and if folks catch on, you can change them to anything else. They made someone's random cartoon frog a Nazi symbol. They convinced people the OK 👌 gesture was a Nazi dogwhistle. They let us debate whether “transgender” is the Good Word and “transsexual” is the Bad Word while they took all trans Americans' self-identification rights. They will exhaust you running on euphemism treadmills while they put their energy into their actual goals. It is good and interesting to know the history of symbols co-opted by Nazis, but if you find yourself so deep in their game you are trying to figure out a major political player's worldview by debating whether “my heart to you” is Good Gesture and Roman salute is Bad Gesture, you may need to look across the table and realize they left ten moves ago.
I know it doesn't fit as nicely in a tweet or a 7-second video clip, but please look at what people like Elon Musk have actually said and done in recent years, at the end points of the policies they have pushed for, and at how they responded when anyone pointed out who their policy goals would harm, and you can figure out how fashy their worldviews are without waiting for them to go this mask-off.
what do you mean elon musk did a nazi salute on live tv at the united states presidential inauguration twice and is now erasing the evidence off the internet by replacing the footage with the crowd cheering instead?
would be a shame if people reblogged this, wouldn’t it?

The correct term for nazi sympathizer is still nazi, and this series is only going to get more relevant over the next few years. I suggest watching/rewatching it now, creating your own reading lists from the reference page and making a list of things to look up on your own time, because I bet you anything these will get taken off youtube before we can blink. Look at the censorship on tiktok.

Now I try and look for nuance in many writings I come by, trying to analyze the story and the characters... but there are times when I just feel some undying hatred for those in the city, despite knowing that there are a few—if not many—who do not approve of the society that they were born in.
It's harder to look past the characters who easily take the lives of others with such ease. But then again, they were probably fed the wrong information and told horrible falsehoods that make them believe that the murder of the "savage" clan cats is somehow justified, when in fact they just killed a child that had so much ahead of her and took the life of a mother that still had many more things to laugh about with her daughters and teach them.
There are (hopefully) more cats like Schmidt, Luna, and Jo that'll be able to help change a few of the perspectives within the city. I don't have any theories as to how the city dwellers would've known (?) to attack during the gathering, but I'm sure Sardine or another may have merely been speaking to Mystique, which ended up in her mentioning the gathering and perhaps in a fit of sorts, mentioned the fact that she had children back by the clans. I'd like to think that she didn't just willingly spew out all the information that Sardine needed for his barrage... she didn't want to be a mother in the first place, so why would she intentionally help bring them back?
Anyway! Just wanted to share my thought process/thoughts. Love you're writing!
(Formerly known as Vonmunin/Vonrozen, I just have a very indecisive mind when it comes to online aliases, but we change as we grow right?)
Thanks for making study breaks entertaining!
You're definitely not in the wrong to hate Sardine and his gang. As much as I think trying to empathize with fascists and see them as real people and understand why they are the way they are is important, it definitely never means that you have to like them or excuse the harm they do or not punch them in the face when necessary.
I think the important thing is to let yourself get angry but make sure you're never dehumanizing them into a totally evil Other. That's where we get into dangerous territory. Dehumanization always leads to bad things, no matter who is being dehumanized.
If you'd like to try empathizing with hateful, violent people who may have been taken advantage of or lied to by more powerful fascists, I recommend this video from The Alt Right Playbook called "How to Radicalize A Normie."
youtube
Or this one which is a bit more in depth, "Isolation, Engulfment, and Pain: Why the Alt Right is Like an Abusive Relationship"
youtube
These videos are some of my favorite things on the internet and they really helped me understand how most alt righters are (or at least start out as) victims of other fascists. Really, I strongly urge all of you to watch.
As for Mystique, I think the last piece we saw her in where Sardine reached out to her shows that she is in a very vulnerable place and he is willing and able to manipulate her while she's in that state. She says out loud "I'm not going to help you kill them all" or something like that, so it stands to reason, whatever information she gave she gave under false pretenses.

New video! Another miniature Alt-Right Playbook, about how Far Right recruitment is not dissimilar from pick-up artistry.
Back me on Patreon. Transcript below the cut.
Say, for the sake of argument, you’ve been having a knock-down-drag-out online with a reactionary for weeks. It’s been going long enough that you don’t remember how it started, or, entirely, what you’re talking about. The argument seems to center around the nation of Israel. You’re fuzzy on what his position on Israel is - he seems to think of it as a religious ethnostate, which he likes, and wants to use as a model for the US, but it’s a Jewish state and he has a lot of awful things to say about Jews. He also has a lot of awful things to say about you! He’s been giving you every incivility you can imagine - and a few you’ve never heard of - since this began. It’s not helped by the fact that, while you know your position on ethnostates and antisemitism - they’re bad! - you don’t actually know a lot about the history, founding, or government of Israel, so he often catches you out by infodumping and then mocking your ignorance.
He’s just so rude and conceited and you’re absolutely desperate to show the guy up, trying to bulk up on history every day before logging on, but then something unexpected happens. All of a sudden, he stops insulting you. He’s still saying awful things about everything you’ve ever claimed to believe, but now it’s directed at a “them.” Liberals, commies, SJWs, what have you. But he’s not calling you any of those things. He’s treating you like you’re smarter than all those limp-wristed leftoids, smart like him. Better than them. It’s like he sees potential in you. And after weeks of trying to one-up this guy, suddenly having his respect is actually kind of cool.
This is a recruitment technique. This is the outer edge of the onion. It centers around treating a person badly so they fixate their attention on you, seek some kind of recognition, and maybe have their confidence undermined, and then turning around and treating them very well. The nearest analogue is actually pick-up artist techniques like Negging and Love-Bombing.
If anyone does this to you, understand: you are being groomed.

if you want a good summary of where i feel like we are at from a voice on YouTube that i actually trust and who has done an amazing job at spelling all of this out, even when it seemed like people weren't listening, you should take 8 minutes out of your day and watch this video with an open mind. i promise you it is worth it, regardless if you agree with any of the shit that i say on this blog at any given time. i'm not asking for anyone to come up with a plan right now or anything else, only that you take the time to gain this perspective in the belief it will benefit everyone to hear it in the long run.
creator's channel is here: Innuendo Studios.

Anyone else see the latest video of Alt-Right Playbook series from Innuendo Studios? (ft Philosophy Tube!!). This particular one honestly reminds me sooo much of the methodology used by anti-transID and anti-endo folk, as well. You don't have to be entirely right-wing to use their tactics, afterall.
Wanted to share for anyone not familiar with the series!

Sidenote: this is also why I hate (and I know "hate" is a strong word, but in this case I do sincerely hate) people who go on and on about how we're supposedly getting "dumber as a society." Nine times out of ten, they don't need much incentive to go off on some "Reject Modernity, Embrace Tradition, But Couch It in Vaguely Leftist Language" bullshit.
#The amount of cryptofash nonsense that I've seen from supposed 'leftists' on this website is appalling.#If you're gonna borrow any rhetoric from the Alt-Right Dipshit Playbook to make your point I'm straight up not gonna listen.#the schemer speaks#this freaking site
