What I would choose all over again in our home {and those I wish I hadn't!}
Can you believe we've been in our home almost two and a half years already? It feels like we've been here much longer...it felt like home even before we moved in. I forgot how long it takes to really get a new home the way you want it -- not just decor, but things placed where they work best, organization, figuring how we use the spaces. It's been a really fun process for me! There are things I LOVE about our home that I would recommend to anyone, and there are a few items I kick myself almost daily for doing the way I did. I thought I'd share them here in case you're considering any of these projects or building your own home! Let's start with the parts I love, shall we? I adore our whole house, so this is easy. But there are certain things in particular that would hard to go without now.
1. Master bath upgrades
Our master bathroom is HUGE and I love it. I am SO thrilled with our big shower -- it is a dream come true! We had a tiny shower before and this still feels so luxurious:
If you have the ability to add a bigger shower -- go for it!! You won't regret it. We didn't add double shower heads, it's an expense I'm glad we didn't add on. (Although I do kind of wish we added a rainhead fixture.)
**My husband thinks the bigger shower is colder -- I think it's just as toasty. Something to consider!
Another bathroom upgrade that I absolutely love is our soaking tub:
We had a corner jetted tub in the old house and loved it -- we actually used the jets quite often. We priced out a stand alone tub with jets because we thought we'd really miss it. It was going to be another three grand or something crazy like that, so that was a nope. Turns out I ADORE the deep soaking tub. I've taken more baths in this tub in two years than our old one in 14 years! It's so warm and toasty and I would never go back! :)
2. Our open layout
Ten years ago or so the master on main floorplans were gaining in popularity. With a toddler at the time, I told my husband there was no way I'd consider it. Now, it's probably my favorite thing about this house. :) Living on (mostly) one level is amaaaaazing. :) Can you tell I like it?
One thing I noticed immediately was how clean our master stays compared to our old one. We can easily take trash or dishes out where they belong. It's also much easier to keep up with laundry and just putting things away in general.
I know it's not an option for many with young kids, but if you're building a house and plan to stay there for a long time, I encourage you to think past the baby/toddler years. It's the number one recommendation I make to anyone building!
Also, overall the layout of this house just fits our lifestyle better. We entertain a lot and LOVE having the open layout. Our family room, kitchen and morning room are all one big space and it is ideal when we have friends or family over:
This post may contain affiliate links for your convenience.
See my policies and disclosure page for more information.
Instead of dining, living and family rooms, we just have the one large space. Because I turned our old dining room into a library, we used those rooms more than most do, but we would have preferred to have that square footage in the family space.
If you are building or renovating and want less rooms but more space, I don't think you'll regret one big living area.
3. Door handles instead of knobs
This is such a little thing but it's something I think about nearly every day!
I am SO glad I chose handles instead of knobs for our doors:
I picked them because I loved the look of them...no other reason. But we've learned they're so much easier to use.
I especially love the handle on the door from the mud room to the garage. It's SO nice when our hands our full -- we can just push it with our elbow and open the door. If you have little ones I'm not sure you'd love them (I'm sure they have some kind of baby proofing gadgets for them) but if not, I highly recommend the handles! (And they just look good! These have a bit of a curve to them but are the same matte black.)
4. Mud/laundry combo
I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this because we had this combo in the last house and I hated it! I eventually moved our laundry to the basement because I disliked it so much.
The key to this working is SPACE. If you don't have enough space for both, don't do it (ours in the old house was basically a hallway). But if you have room, go for it!:
I love having this utility space all in one. We have a lot going on in here -- a cleaning closet that serves multiple needs and a folding table that hides our cat litter as well. We keep our messes in here and most guests would never know.
I also LOVE that when we walk in from traveling, I can just open the suitcases and throw the laundry in the machines. It's pretty awesome. :)
Now, a very short list of the things I'd change if I could go back in time. All of these items are really lovely...but they don't function great.
1. Our bathroom vanities
I hate them. I hate them so much. 😂 I am an idiot for choosing them from all the options we had!:
Now I LOVE having the vanities separate -- that's not what bothers me. It's that they have very little storage.
For some reason I thought I picked an option with drawers down the sides. I didn't. 😢 What makes it worse is they middle section can't be used for bins or storage because the plumbing was run right through the middle. I just hate them all around. Loathe. Ha!
My advice -- think STORAGE in the bathroom!!
2. Our son's segmented bathroom
I've talked about this before and how I've kicked myself for doing this. I had just finished knocking down a wall in his old bathroom and making his two room bath into one before moving into this house.
I thought this one wouldn't bother me for some reason, but it does. Oh yes. It does:
It's not a big bathroom anyway, so having it cut in two (sinks in one section, toilet and shower in the other) makes it feel SO tight.
If I had just made it one room, I could have saved myself a ton of work. But now this is on my project list for the year because it's bugged me so much.
3. Our engineered hardwood floors
I love the color and look of our floors. And overall they have held up OK to moisture, animals and life in general:
But they are MUCH softer than our old floors. Every time we drop something it dents or damages the wood. EVERY time. Thankfully I have a stain pencil that fills the nicks in well enough that no one would see it, but the dents are still noticeable. We had finished on-site hardwoods at the old house and they are more expensive, but worth it. I wish I would have at least priced out the difference for this house. (Our flooring is from Diamond Living but was discontinued right after we moved in.) Again, the things that I would change are still beautiful, they just don't function quite as well as I'd like. I need both form and function! :) I'm pretty thrilled that those are my only problem areas in this house, especially considering how quickly I had to make decisions. We LOVE our home! Do you have any of my favorites or problem items in your home? What would you have on your list? Hopefully this is helpful to any of you who are remodeling or building a home in the future! Binu Binu’s Soaps Combine Korean Bathhouse Culture with Modern Design
The following post is brought to you by Squarespace. Our partners are hand picked by the Design Milk team because they represent the best in design.
In a day and age when looking after one’s mind and body is the ultimate in self care, Binu Binu is a brand of modern soaps inspired by the age old ritual of the Korean public bath. Like the spaces themselves, these soaps are based on the idea of daily ritual, intergenerational bonding, and the infamous Korean scrub treatment “Seshin,” an incredibly vigorous exfoliating treatment found at the baths. “Binu” means soap in Korean, and was chosen for its simplicity as well as the fact that it’s not an immediately recognizable word or associated with anything in the English language.
Binu Binu founder Karen Kim used Squarespace when launching their website to help create a beautiful online presence right from the start. The clean lines of their templates were in line with the brand she was beginning to form, and the other services the all-in-one platform offers would help build her business as it grew. We talked to her about Squarespace, Korean bathhouse culture, and why you might want to pick up one of their Scrub Towels!
Up until starting Binu Binu, Kim had been working in New York’s fashion industry with a focus on product development, editorial, and buying. Doing so gave her the opportunity to come to know so many brands and designers with fascinating stories who had created their own creative worlds, and it got her thinking.
“I got to the point where I just felt that it was the right time to create my own products and put them out there, as a way to share my vision with others. I think I always had an obsession with soap. One of my earliest childhood memories is of being scrubbed to the bone by my grandmother, watching what I thought were bruises disappear with just a bar of soap and determination. I thought it was magic.” she said.

“Later on, on a trip to Korea with my mother and aunts, we would visit the public bathhouses every day and I loved how it was contrary to North American spa culture – which seems focused on the self and the idea of luxury. The Korean bathhouse (“jjimjilbang”) was more about a communal, everyday wellness ritual that was social, intergenerational, and seemed to lack vanity and self-consciousness. I found that to be so refreshing and wanted to bring some of that mood to Binu Binu. To me, a bar of soap represents something universal, ancient, with the simple aim of becoming clean. So Binu Binu was born from the idea of a simplified soap and water routine (the opposite of the complicated 10-step skincare routines popular in K-beauty brands) as well as a celebration of Korean bathhouse culture,” Kim explained.

Once she decided to follow her passion for soap and culture, Kim dove right into the process of figuring out just what she wanted Binu Binu’s soaps to represent.
“Each soap starts with a story, and the formulation and ingredients flow from there. A lot of the inspiration for the collection comes from strong female role models in Korean culture. For example, the Haenyeo Sea Women are sea divers on Jeju Island who dive tank-free for the catch of the day. Many are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, and are still out there every day in the icy cold water. Because seafood is such a large part of the economy, Jeju is a matriarchal society led by these incredible women. Our Haenyeo Sea Woman Soap, an homage to these women, has sea salt, seaweed extract, refreshing peppermint essential oil and is a bluish grey color, like the water,” she shared.

“While doing a deep dive into the history of Korean cleansing and purification rituals, I learned about Shamans in Korea, women who perform purification rituals to cleanse the mind and body prior to conducting ceremonies to heal you of whatever ails you. It’s a practice that persists even today. So we developed a Shaman Black Charcoal Soap, inspired by the use of charcoal in these purification ceremonies. It’s our most popular soap,” Kim said.

Kim makes all of the various soaps by hand in their Toronto studio using the cold press method, which involves combining lye with oils and letting the mixture harden and cure for four to six weeks, to best retain natural oils known to benefit skin. The base of every batch contains “boricha,” the well-known Korean roasted barley tea. Every 100% natural bar is fragrance-free and does not contain palm oils, synthetic detergents, artificial colorants, parabens, sulfates, or animal products. So you know this is a product you can feel good about purchasing and using in a multitude of ways.
Of course Kim uses her own soaps, and has the other soap-related wares Binu Binu offers in her bathroom. Each product has been thoughtfully designed and put to the test to be both a functional and beautiful addition to your bathing space.
“I like to cycle through various soaps, whatever I’m in the mood for – lately it’s been our new Creamy Clay Complexion Soap. I absolutely love using clay in soap, as I find it adds a really nice richness to the lather as well as adding a beautiful color. The Hibiscus Clay Facial Soap is always a perennial favorite, since my skin can be somewhat dry the extra shea butter makes this really gentle and moisturizing,” she says of her favorites.
Of her other go-tos, Kim said, “My other must-have is our Seshin Korean Scrub Mitt and Towel. I love to exfoliate and this is just such a satisfying way to do it, where the results are immediate. A Korean scrub at the jjimjilbang is an amazing eye-opening experience. You leave feeling cleaner-than-clean and wondering how you could have ever walked around with so much extra baggage, so to speak. I became obsessed with the little cheap and cheerful neon-colored striped scrub mitts they use, so I designed an elevated, neutral-toned version for the line so you can scrub at home in the bath or shower. The towel version is to reach your back if you don’t always have a friend present to scrub it for you.”

When Binu Binu’s soaps are paired with their Marble Soap Dishes you can see just how well both complement one another. To create them Kim works closely with artisans who specialize in marble bath wares – everything from sinks to counters to full-on marble free-standing bath tubs. Together they design and develop the dishes, selecting the various stone varieties for each batch as they go.
“I love the combo of our Marble Soap Dishes with our soaps. Working with natural stones is endlessly fascinating, because each piece is truly unique and beautiful. The ones with swirl patterns that speak to me make their way into my own personal collection. I’m partial to the Blue Marble, a glossy teal with white and sepia tones that looks like the Earth from space, and the Green Onyx, which is translucent and almost ethereal – like it glows from within.”
You can’t help but be struck by each bar’s gorgeous angles and almost monumental aesthetic. It turns out that their sculptural qualities are just what drew Kim specifically to bar soaps in the first place.
She said, “I knew that I wanted to create a shape that was pared down, with clean edges and no extraneous details, but also something archetypal and iconic that wasn’t commonplace. Our bars can stand upright like a column, and can also fit perfectly in the hand. By shifting from a more ubiquitous flat rectangle to a monolithic shape, it turns an everyday object into a little sculptural object for the bathroom.”

We’re crazy about everything Binu Binu creates, so we asked Kim what’s on the horizon for the brand in the foreseeable future and what she’s most excited about.
She answered, “So many new things! One that we are most excited about is our biodegradable soap case for travel. It’s inspired by vintage designer soap cases, but modernized – definitely not something you would find in a drug store aisle. I think being able to simplify a toiletry bag is important. Instead of traveling with a million little bottles, you can pack a beautiful, discreet case (bonus: since the soap is solid, it’s TSA approved). It launches in October, just in time for the busy holiday travel season. Moving forward further into the future, our focus is on gradually building a world of modern bathhouse-inspired products that are also beautiful objects in and of themselves.”

Like many first-time business owners, Kim was less intimidated by Squarespace than other available options, which was a main factor in choosing them for Binu Binu’s website. Their abilities matched well with her burgeoning brand’s needs and left room to grow as a business, even offering tools that might help along the way.
“When I first started my business, I was drawn to Squarespace because it enabled me to effortlessly create an e-commerce site that was simple, yet considered design and functionality. I found that I could customize as I go, which is important to any new business as its needs change. At first we started with the Galapagos template, and now we use the Pedro template. I appreciate the flexibility, ease, and clean design principles that Squarespace keeps in mind.”

A Luxury Home With A Jungle Gym Bedroom
Some designs stand out from the crowd with their loud colors and flashy finishings, but this contemporary abode takes a different approach. Designer and visualizer, Tolko Interiors, did an amazing job creating a unique apartment that is both elegant and stylish. This 140 sqm. home located in Moscow, Russia is encapsulated by neutrals and adorned with accents of moss green, gold, and marble. There is nothing quite like it! We were especially blown away by the playful turn of décor in the kid’s bedroom, with a full section dedicated to an indoor jungle gym. It isn’t every day that you see a neutrally colored kid’s room look so energetic and enticing!
Washed in a flood of natural light, this living room has a rich color palette filled with an array of neutral and unsaturated hues. This project was named the “Oregano Flat” due to the accents of deep and dark oregano green that you will see throughout this home. In this room, the deep green really contrasts against the unique coffee table with its gold and white glossy finish.
The same gold finish on the coffee table is carried throughout this open-concept layout to highlight both the cupboards and the walls. This apartment measures 140 sqm., so the use of an open-concept living room/eat-in kitchen really helps maximize the space.
A view of the living room and all its oregano green goodness. We see that this color has been used on both the ceiling-to-floor curtains, as well as the two accent chairs in the seating area. The combo of both sheer and heavy curtains is quite the dynamic duo in this room, with the sheer curtains making sure that natural light is fully utilized and the heavy green curtains adding a dramatic flair.
The gold, green, and brown color palette chosen for this space feels rich and earthy. We can clearly see that the designers took a page out of Mother Nature’s design book with the textured accent chairs reminiscent of moss and the wooden accents used throughout the home.
This living room perfectly demonstrates that patterns don’t always need to be big and bold to make an impact. The herringbone patterned wood floors and checkered rug add visual interest to this room and undoubtedly enhances the rest of its features. With the use of mainly neutrals, varying shades, patterns, and texture is vital to create a design that doesn’t feel monotonous.
In this corner, we find a small, white built-in bookcase wedged between the unique fireplace and large windows. Custom shelving is always a great way to ensure that you are maximizing the amount of space you have by creating a perfect fit. Floor-to-ceiling shelving is also a wonderful idea since it can help a room feel taller, which in turn makes it feel more spacious.
A small eat-in kitchen equipped with a marble dining table and seating for 6. This room is perfect for a double date or an intimate get together among friends. Just look how cozy it is!
The unique dining room pendant lights in this eat-in kitchen are hard to miss. Their round design and uneven spacing make them a fun, yet elegant lighting choice for this contemporary space.
The kitchen table is complete with a mix of decorative vases and containers. The use of both clear and opaque table decor was a divine choice that helps keep things interesting.
A peek in to the bedroom and we find the same color palette along with a gold designer table lamp and marble headboard. The lamp seen on the left is called an Atollo lamp and can come with quite the steep price tag. However, those who love the look but are on a tighter budget can find cheaper replicas on Ebay.
The low platform bed with its custom headboard and gold side table becomes the centerpiece of this bedroom. The plush rug and neutral coloring makes it extra cozy and perfect for lazy Sundays in bed or snuggling up with a good book.
Standing proudly beside the built-in end table is a simple and chic floor lamp. Floor lamps or wall sconces are a great option for those who need extra lighting in the bedroom, but don’t want to give up valuable end table space.
A floating marble shelf that seamlessly matches the custom headboard hovers below a mounted flatscreen TV. This bedroom has also decided to forgo a regular dresser and has instead traded it for a stylish floating cabinet.
In case this bed couldn’t get any cooler, it turns out that the backside is equipped with a full makeup vanity! A makeup vanity just steps away from a cozy bed? Yes, please!
A close-up gives us a better look at the velour vanity stool. You might of noticed that the same fabric has been used to upholster the bed frame.
A glass shower keeps things fresh and open in this luxury bathroom. This flat has a really uniform look thanks to elements like the black and white marble and herringbone flooring being carried from room to room.
A double sink with a unique configuration. Instead of sitting directly atop the vanity cupboard, like the majority of counters, this one floats a foot above it. This leaves plenty of room to display bathroom pretties like folded towels, bath products or candles.
To complete the luxury bathroom experience, this corner has been fitted with a large soaker tub. The side has been paneled with the same material as the cabinets to create a flow of dark brown that contrasts beautifully against the white counter and other light finishings.
This bedroom is brimming with Scandinavian charm! Everything from the kid’s study space to the ride-on airplane is pure perfection.
A swivel chair and Flos Snoopy lamp help create the perfect workspace for getting a bit of homework done. One of our personal favorite features of this room is the whole wall of built-ins. Having that much storage undoubtedly contributes to this bedroom’s clean and uncluttered aesthetic.
The AIM pendant light draped from the ceiling is a tangle of modern charm and youthful style. A wonderful lighting option for rooms that are looking to incorporate more playfulness in to their design.
This bedroom knows how to do kid’s decor in a big way. Let’s be honest, what child wouldn’t love their own personal climbing wall? Plus, there is also a swinging rope and rings hanging from the ceiling. It’s like having your own personal park!
For when the little one is all tucked out from play, a cozy single bed is situated in the corner. This space goes a bit more playful with its pattern and opts for arrow and chevron bedding.
No bedroom would be complete without a side table. This design uses a small side table to store a few books and a Lego toy. Its white and brown coloring and fun shape seamlessly blend in to the aesthetic of this awesome kid’s bedroom.

One Space Two Design Options
We rarely get to see two different interior designs for the same space, but this pair of visualisations let us do exactly that. Visualised by Alex Yagodin, both options have a swish modern feel with curvaceous furniture and commanding monochrome backdrops. However, by adjusting the colour palette, the ambience of the space is completely transformed. ‘Option 1’ is a fresh feeling space that utilises upbeat accent colours, which are then tamed by charcoal grey blocking. ‘Option 2’ is a cohesive colour story of midnight blue feature walls and textiles, sumptuous and sultry. Whether you like to change it up or match it through, this set of non identical twins shows both sides of the coin.
The main part of the home is almost circular in its floor plan, which makes for an interesting layout. Curvaceous furniture has been selected to tie in with the bowed line of the external wall, and the same lounge furniture pieces are used in both of the design options for this space. What does differ in ‘Option 1’ is the jarring pop of primary red at the centre of the lounge, where a vibrant coffee table switches up the vibe of the charcoal grey and white room.
A cluster of three large modern pendant lights dangle above the red coffee table, and perimeter lighting adds more glow to the bright room. A corrugated panel adds a modern edge to the tv wall decor.
Bold green chairs are set by the staircase in a spacious foyer, alongside a set of black side tables. A modern chandelier makes a starburst of light over the arrangement. Grey wainscot decorates the walls around the contemporary staircase design. Clean cut monochrome pattern fills the floor.
Disc-like dining pendant lights hover over a glass table and cheerful yellow chair combo. A monochrome circle rug adds another dimension.
From here we can see that the living room fireplace is in fact dual sided – making it useful on the dining room side too.
A chandelier trio span the ceiling of a modern home office space.
The high gloss black desk stands upon a black and white circle rug. A piece of monochrome art is casually propped against a set of bespoke bookshelves.
A designer table lamp brings another circular design to the room.
Wood effect herringbone flooring fills the office, matching that of the lounge and kitchen diner.
Russet walls contrast with charcoal inside a modest shower room. A copper decorative vanity mirror adds some sheen.
White sanitaryware brightens the dark toned scheme.
In ‘Option 2’, we’re met with an inviting blue rug in the lounge. The tv wall decor has been smoothed out for a sleeker, softer look, and a larger white fireplace replaces the black mid-sized alternative. Plain charcoal window drapes now become a two-toned fall of black and pale grey.
A gloss black coffee table replaces the uber-modern red one. A solo pendant light occupies the centre spot of the ceiling.
In this alternative visual for the foyer, the monochrome flooring has a much busier design – one which can be seen through much more of the house than in the original. Blue accent chairs pull together with midnight blue wainscot to evoke drama, and make high contrast with the white staircase. A twinkling long drop chandelier descends from the rafters down to the chairs, and meets with the glow of under-tread stair lights.
A white decorative mirror looks crisp against the dark blue wall.
In the kitchen diner, a cluster of orb lights replace the duo of discs over the table. The dining table itself becomes a gloss black option instead of glass and wood. Petite yellow dining chairs have been switched out for blue upholstered comfort.
Wood herringbone is no longer in the kitchen diner, instead the floor is engulfed with optical illusion laminate.
An island has appeared between the dining suite and the black and white kitchen, which could serve as culinary prep area or as a small side table serving the dining area.
This time around we journey into the two bedrooms. The first decor scheme is an energetic monochrome affair with a modern 4 poster bed. You can find more options for 4 poster beds here.
A pair of matching bedroom chairs squeeze onto the edge of the rug.
Another accent chair sits by mirrored wardrobe doors.
The second double bedroom in the home has an unusual fabric covered bed frame that is made even more eye-catching with the addition of decorative screening at the headboard. White bedroom pendant lights with tassels add to the layered effect.
A metallic chartreuse bedside table adds contrasting colour.
Two-tone curtains provide a pretty border to the room.
Pink accent chairs crouch by a black side table.
The luxury bathroom encompasses a paler shade of blue.
Enormous modern light fixtures are angled at a freestanding tub, making it the star of the show. You can see more beautiful bathrooms with bathtubs here.
The rest of the bathroom is kept simple and white.
The shower room (which also featured in ‘Option 1’) has the same russet shower walls and monochrome pedestal basin, but this time the ensemble is teamed with blue feature walls.
A stronger floor design also changes up the look.
Ground floor plan. The floor plan illustrates the round nature of the building, which is outlined by a sweeping balcony.
Upper floor plan.
