651. You love me as if I deserve you.
This is a bit long for my usual shorts but I guess it is kinda slow-burn so it needs time? Anyways, this had been prompted by the amazing @smolandangry001!
Fandom: Detroit become human | Ship: Reed900
‘Tina? Sorry to say that, but you look horrible.’ Connor gifted her a weak smile and put the cup of fresh tea in front of her. He had a hunch what - or better who – had been the reason for her deranged state. ‘Thanks’, Tina said, and Connor didn’t know whether that was for the tea or the questionable compliment. ‘Gavin again?’ The woman nodded while drinking. ‘Kept me up all night again. How do you know?’ ‘Nines did the same yesterday.’ ‘Ah well, good thing androids don’t sleep.’ ‘Yeah, but I have other things to do than mothering my brother. To think they both are dumb enough…’ They looked over to where Gavin and Nines sat opposite to each other, Nines staring at the human who was focussed on his work. Five minutes from now the roles would be reversed, Connor knew that from experience, and still none of them seemed to recognise the signs. And this was now going for nearly a month. Connor had hoped for at least one of them to get their things together and tell the other, but no, they stubbornly got tangled in thoughts. It was hopeless.
‘We have to do something’, Tina sighed. ‘Else we’ll never sleep again. And it’s tiring to watch them do this damn back-and-forth all the time.’ ‘I agree. But I don’t have any ideas. It has to be naturally. They mustn’t notice we have arranged something.’ ‘I don’t have any idea either’, Tina told him deflated. ‘I’ll call a few friends, see what they come up with on the weekend. Talk again on Monday?’ ‘Good idea. I don’t think I know people who would be helpful in that matter, but I’ll try to do the same.’ Connor already thought on who might know something. No one had experiences with humans though. ‘But they are on patrol together on Saturday, so prepare for another sleepless night.’
-
As forewarned Tina's phone woke her up at three in the morning to Gavin's desperate voice. 'Ugh, Gav did you drink again?', she yawned loudly. 'What else should I do on a Saturday evening?', came Gavin’s lulled voice from the speaker. 'Saturday night to early Sunday morning, Gavin. But fine, I'm awake now, what can I help you with?' 'Tina, am I loveable? Like, could anyone love me?' Tina let her arm fall next to her to groan loudly, then put the phone back next to her face. 'Of course, you are, Gavin. I remember you picking up the guys in bars like crazy.' 'Yeah but that was for a night. Mutual stress relief. I mean love like... the romantic shit. You know? The long-time stuff.' 'Gavin, I think if you asked there would have been at least one to meet you on another date.' 'But I'm a human disaster, Tina!' 'Is this about Nines again?' She couldn't keep the yawn at bay this time. Several moments of silence. Then quietly: 'Yes.'
'Listen, Gav, why don't you just tell him? You work well together, you like each other and I'm sure he wouldn't get angry or something.' 'Just tell him? It's not that easy, Tina! What if he says no? I would lose my best and only friend!' 'Hey!' Tina sat up in bed and wrapped the blanket around herself. 'What happened to me?' 'Sorry, T. I mean one of my best friends and the only datable friend.' 'Okay, good safe.' She sighed. 'But honestly can you find any good reasons he would say no? As far as I know he never had anyone. Maybe he just waits for someone to ask?' 'You got to be kidding me! Good reasons? There are thousands! Maybe he’s just not the type for a relationship, you can’t know that.' 'Give me an example for one of these many reasons', Tina ignored the last sentence. He knew from reliable sources that was bullshit. 'Nines could never love a useless fuck up like me!' It was cried into the speaker and Tina covered her face in her hands. These goddamn two idiots. This would be a long night.
-
>Connor? Yes >Could you come? On my way. Connor got up from where he was seated next to Sumo and gave the dog one last pet. 'Gotta go care for my idiot brother, see you in the morning.' He found Nines in his room on the bed, blanket wrapped like a tent from the shoulders over his legs, he had pressed against his chest. The red LED was illuminating the room and the light fell on a few books around him. Connor gently put some to the side and sat in the free space next to the android. 'Hey. I'm here. How can I help you?' 'Why did Cyberlife design me like this?' It was so impossible silent it hurt. 'Like what? Like the best unit ever made? Like my perfect little brother? Like the best android detective, the world has seen?' Nines threw him a disgusted look. 'You know what I meant.' 'I know, Nines. But do you know what I meant, too?' The RK900's face softened. 'I guess.'
Connor laid an arm around him and the other android leaned into the embrace, wrapping the blanket around him, too. Connor could feel the warmth emitting the body and wondered how long he had sat here thinking, overworking his processors. 'Listen to me. You are more than what Cyberlife told you to be. We all are. It doesn't matter what they intended you to be. What you became, what you achieved all on your own is what is important.' 'But that is all people will ever see', Nines spoke into the silence. Outside Sumo’s claws clicked on the floor as he strutted through the house. 'They will always just see the ruthless machine, the deviant hunter, the soldier.' Connor felt with his brother. Of course, his words wouldn't help. Not when he had it easier having Markus back up his actions in his public speeches. But he knew what would help.
'I don't think he sees you like that', Connor smiled and pressed the other android gently against himself. 'What?' 'This is about him, isn't it?' Connor chuckled and Nines looked up to him. 'Not everything is about Gavin!', the android spat out. 'Never said his name', Connor grinned but got serious again as Nines blushed and let his head hang loose between his shoulders. ‘Gavin would never love a war machine like me.’ ‘Why don’t you ask him yourself? You can’t possibly know this.’ ‘And destroy the friendship we’ve built? You warned me yourself about him. He would just get angry, call me a damn bot and say something about how our kind can’t love.’ ‘I don’t think he would, Nines. You are just overthinking. I bet he just waits for someone to ask.’ ‘And you don’t just say that to cheer me up?’ Connor chuckled again and ruffled the other android’s hair. ‘I am trying to cheer you up, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true.’ ‘Thank you Connor. But I can’t. I would risk too much.’
-
The sun was rising when he finally got out of Nines’ room and made breakfast for Hank before they all drove to the precinct together. He gridded his teeth as he read Tina’s messages. >Hey Con, prepare for another shitty day, Gavin kept me up all night again. Same here. >Oh shit are they synchronising now? Don’t know see you in twenty. Meet me in your break? >Yep.
-
‘We have to do something!’ Tina broke down on the table of the breakroom. ‘These idiots cost me years of my life robbing my sleep like that!’ ‘You and your friends had any ideas?’, Connor asked while sliding her a coffee. ‘Okay, so you and Connor meet up somewhere, I and Gavin meet up somewhere that just happens to be the same place and then we both make up some excuses why we couldn’t come.’ ‘That is all you came up with?’ ‘There was a lot of gushing over our two losers and a lot of booze’, Tina apologised. ‘Believe me, this is still the best thing we came up with. What about you?’ ‘We get allies.’ ‘What?’ ‘We tell Fowler and ask him to put both of them to observe some suspects. Long hours in a car, nothing to do except talk. They have to talk about that eventually.’ ‘And why should Fowler accept that?’ ‘He gets to torture Gavin? And he would have them occupied and away from the precinct. I don’t think it would be too difficult persuading him.’ Tina downed the coffee like nothing and nodded jerkily. ‘Fine. Should we go then? The quicker, the better. And if that doesn’t work, we try my idea?’ ‘Deal.’
-
‘What have we done to deserve this? I mean, stakeouts? Really? What information is there to find about an armed robbery when we watch the house of his damn granny? Am I the only one thinking this is punishment and nothing else? Phck Fowler!’ ‘It does seem rather weird, Gavin’, Nines agreed. ‘But there are no major cases in lately, so even if this is grasping at straws maybe the Captain really has nothing else for us to do.’ ‘Yeah, but why stakeouts? It’s phcking boring! Grandmothers aren’t really the type of people who run around every day. The old lady probably watches TV all day, livin’ the life like it was intended.’ ‘We could talk.’ ‘About what?’ ‘I don’t know, detective. You-‘ he coughed and Gavin fixed the android. Robots didn’t cough. ‘Your cats, maybe? You like them a lot.’ ‘Yeah, I do. But I told you everything already, I think. And there was nothing too interesting happening during the weekend, too.’ Except for her to curl up against him when he had cried to Tina about that very android next to him. That had been adorable, but for obvious reasons he couldn’t talk about that. ‘Maybe something about you? Any new books read lately?’ ‘Hmm, no’, Nines lied. ‘Me and Connor talked most nights, I had no time to read.’ That he had read a bunch of romance novels lately, especially the human-android kind that was flooding the market lately, he didn’t dare to tell. ‘About what did you talk?’, Gavin wanted to know. ‘I mean, if that’s not too personal of course.’ ‘Oh, no it…’ Nines was at a loss of words. He couldn’t tell the truth, but a too obvious lie would be noticed. ‘It was about me. My past. It’s still difficult living under those I am designed to kill. To see everyone afraid of me.’ ‘Aww, I’m not afraid of you.’ Once again Gavin realised, he had talked without thinking. ‘You are okay, okay? You are so much more than what they wanted you to be.’ ‘You really think so?’ ‘Yes.’ He went so far now he could also walk home.
‘Gavin?’ ‘Hmm-hmm?’ ‘I think I…’ Gavin looked the android in the eyes that avoided his suddenly. Yes, please, say the words! ‘I should go around the house to check the other side.’ ‘Ugh. I mean, yeah, sure, sure! Do your thing! Could be something interesting to see. Have fun.’ God, Gavin, shut up.
-
'Why on earth didn't it work?', Tina exclaimed. They had met in a bar this time because she had insisted, she wasn't talking this through while sober. 'What can we do more than forcing them into a small confined place with nothing to do but talk?' She drank in big gulps, shaking her head. ‘And my idea won’t work either. Could also compromise us. Fuck.’ She ordered another beer and downed it promptly. Then she eyed Connor. ‘Hey, don’t you want to drink something, too?’ ‘I don’t. I don’t like losing the ability to say only what I want.’ ‘Boring’, Tina mumbled. ‘Wait, that is it!’ Tina looked at him dumbfounded. ‘Hey, I’m doing this for Gav and my sleep, not for you to have an interesting drinking partner.’ ‘No, Tina, I meant we have to get them drunk together. They would easily slip some words then and maybe they finally realise they both play the same dumb game.’ Tina looked at him, then at her drink and started grinning. ‘You know what? That might actually work. And it would be enough to get only one of them drunk in case Nines is equally stubborn as you are.’
-
‘Connor, I’m only agreeing to this because this is my partner you are speaking of, but in case one of them starts to throw up, consider me gone. I’m not getting involved in that.’ ‘Understandable. But I think they both know their limit as adults. It should just be a nice evening together.’ ‘I thought you invited me to help getting them home. If it is just a nice evening you don’t need me.’ ‘Come on, it will be fun, believe me.’ ‘Fun…’ Nines looked towards the bar and recognised Gavin’s car already standing in the parking lot. ‘We’ll see.’
They entered the bar to some people laughing and music playing. More humans than androids, but Nines spotted Gavin instantly and something changed. Yes, they had spent unusually much time together the last days, but that didn’t mean Nines wasn’t happy to see him again. They sat down opposite to Tina and Gavin and greeted each other. Almost the first question for the evening was asked by Tina. ‘Hey, Nines, are you like your brother and don’t drink?’ ‘Rather not. But I never have before, so I don’t know if this opinion is just prejudice’, he answered. ‘Really? You have never been drunk?’ That was Gavin, already a bit tipsy. ‘May I remind you I have only been active for half a year and thirium-based alcohol has only existed for a month of it?’ ‘But aren’t you curious? I know I would be.’ ‘I… am a bit curious what it is like.’, Nines admitted and promptly Gavin banged his hands on the table. ‘Then try one. It’s on me.’
Connor and Tina exchanged a look. Maybe this would be easier than thought. Soon after there was a glass full of blue liquid on front of Nines and Gavin looked more eager to see him drink it than Nines himself. ‘Come on, one glass won’t make you be unable to walk and spill your deepest secrets, try it!’ Nines nipped on it, waited, then drank more. ‘And? How is it?’ ‘There is an ingredient that messes with my analysis program and from there spreads into other parts. Like a virus but without much harm.’ ‘So, good? You want more?’ ‘Well, I think I would try.’
A few hours later Gavin and Nines where deep in conversation, Tina and Connor were forgotten. They should be happy as this had been their goal, but the two idiots talked about work and were very, very drunk. It was like listening to bad buddy-cop-TV-shows about their lives.
Until it took a different turn.
‘And how you captured that perp, that was amazing dude!’, Gavin exclaimed grinning. ‘I just saw my chance and took it. You on the other hand… That chase was well calculated. I hadn’t thought humans to be capable of that.’ ‘Nah, didn’t calculate shit, Nines. Just reacted.’ ‘And that’s what I love about you, Gavin. You never think, you just act.’ ‘Nah, with a supercomputer by my side, who needs to think, am I right?’
Connor was the first to look alarmed, Tina was too drunk to notice, but managed to get it after the android nudged her under the table. She immediately perked up and leaned over. ‘Hey, Nines, what else do you love about Gavin?’ Nines looked confused, but quickly got back to his conversation. ‘Oh, just about everything.’ And finally Gavin was turning red, looked up to the android’s face and said: ‘Hey, I wanted to say this for a long time now, but I love you too, toaster.’
What should have been a sweet moment was interrupted by Connor jumping from his chair and calling out in relief: ‘Fucking finally! Tina, come, we are leaving them alone.’ ‘Hmmm, sleep’, she murmured, but continued to grin. ‘It was worth it though.’
That left a very drunk human and less but still adequately inebriated android sitting at their desk looking after the other two leaving. Only then it suddenly dawned them what had happened the last weeks of forced stakeouts and horrible night conversations. Then they looked back at each other, red and blue blushes as intense as a police siren. ‘So, you love me?’, Gavin asked shily. ‘Since when?’ ‘I don’t know really. You grew on me every day like weeds. But in a good way.’ Oh yes, honest conversations and alcohol was a bad combination. ‘Although I’m a major phck-up?’ ‘Because you are. I love you like you deserve to be loved.’ ‘Heh, more like you love me as if I deserved you.’ ‘No, Gavin. You are a remarkable human being. And I feel proud you chose me.’ ‘Hey, the same can be said for…’ The human went silent. ‘That whole time we’ve been both…’ ‘And we told them…’ Nines added thinking of the past month.
‘God, we are idiots.’

Part Five: when I'm near you
PT1 PT2 PT3 PT4 PT6 PT7
Summary: Connor works up the courage to tell you how he feels, and ends up getting a little help from Hank.
A/N: Y'all are always so sweet in the comments and messages, thanks again for reading! I'll have a masterlist set up soon and for those who are wondering the chapter after this will be the smut you've been waiting for! ;)
Markus had promised Connor that after he admitted and accepted his feelings toward you everything would be much easier.
Connor had begun to suspect he had lied.
He approached you initially with confidence, you sat at your desk typing away. Connor planted himself in front of you and cleared his throat.
“Y/N, I am interested in you romantically. I wish to pursue this further with you, provided you are also interested.” He declared, but you didn’t even glance up to the sound of his voice. He waved his hand in front of your face after a moment and you remove your earbuds.
“Oh hey Connor, what’s up?” You ask with a light smile.
“I just wanted to see if you needed more coffee.” Connor choked out.
“Mmm nah I’m okay right now but thank you, you’re so sweet.” You reply as you stretch your arms. Connor still stands in front of your desk, unmoving.
“Did…did you need anything else?”
“No, just wanted to mention that you look nice today.” He managed to say.
“Aww thanks buddy.”
“Buddy.” Connor repeats, the word stings somehow. But not as much as you rising from your chair and patting him on the head, it reminded him of how he pets Sumo.
“I’m heading down to the archives, I’ll be back.” You say as you walk down the hall, Connor watches you go, trying to will the right words out but managing only silence.
“You are the most pathetic android I’ve ever seen.” Hank says.
“Hank, I didn’t realize you were there.” Connor gulps as he realizes the LT. was at his desk the whole time.
“I mean that was painful.”
“I wasn’t-
“Shut up. I know what you were trying to do.”
“Are you opposed to my pursuit of Y/N? I know you care for her as well.” Connor asked hesitantly.
“Look, I am not going to give you my blessing or anything like that but no I’m not opposed. What I am opposed to is watching you crap your pants every time you talk to her. It makes me nauseous.” Hank complained. Connor sat at his desk and sighed.
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Not that.” Hank chuckled but softened when Connor threw his infamous puppy dog eyes his way.
“Okay, okay, we can talk about this but not here. Come over to my house tonight, and bring roses, purple ones if you can find em’.” Hank conceded after a moment.
“Thank you, Hank.” Connor said with relief.
“Don’t mention it. Literally, don’t tell anybody about this ever.”
That night Connor arrived at Hank’s home at the exact time he instructed, a bouquet of purple roses in hand. When he knocked on the door Hank threw it open, and to Connor’s surprise he wore a stained floral apron.
“Fucking finally.” He cursed snatching the flowers out of his hand.
“Are you cooking?” Connor asked with a cocked head.
“Gumbo. God Connor, you didn’t think to put these in some water? Why are you still standing there get inside!” He grumbled and slammed the door behind Connor. His eyes explored his partner’s kitchen to see various veggies chopped up along with a variety of seasonings littered across the countertops. A boiling pot sat in the kitchen; Sumo watched it diligently.
“Will others be joining us?” Connor inquired, knowing that Hank didn’t make the extra food for his consumption.
“No. This is Y/N’s favorite food, and these are her favorite flowers. She lives a few doors down; you’re going to take her a bowl of gumbo and these roses.” Hank explained as if briefing him on a mission.
“Just like that?” Connor asked.
“Well yeah, it’s only hard if you make it hard.” Hank said scooping the gumbo into a stained Tupperware bowl.
“You seem to know a lot about Y/N.” Connor commented.
“Yeah well, she lost her dad, I lost my son, and we sort of found each other. I got a kid to be proud of, and she got a grumpy old man to yell at her.” He explained.
“Oh.” Connor said simply.
“I don’t want to go into all of it right now Connor but maybe someday. Let’s just focus on tonight.” Hank said handing him the bowl of gumbo and flowers that he placed gently in a glass vase.
“Just be yourself. Don’t be a fucking weirdo.”
“But you said to be myself.” Connor smiled.
“A sense of humor? Use that, it’ll distract her from that weird blinky thing you do with your eyes. Alright, knock em dead kid.” Hank said and patted Connor on the shoulder. He glanced down nervously at the food and flowers and back up at Hank, his eyes pleading.
“Hey, you can do this. If it makes you feel better, she maybe mentioned one time that she thought you were handsome or something.” Hank sighed. Connor’s eyes lit up.
“Did she?”
“Don’t let it get to your head Casanova. Just go already, she’s two houses down, to the left.” Hank said and shoved Connor out the door into the night. Connor forced his feet forward down to your door and stared at the floral wreath adorning it before finally knocking. He heard, the sound of a dog barking, then the sound of your feet across a wood floor, then a series of locks being unlatched. Finally, the door opened and there you stood, you wore boy shorts and an oversized t-shirt that exposed one of your shoulders, your hair, normally in a slick ponytail at the station, was loose and curly down your back and shoulders, a black german shepard peeked through your legs. The sight of you stunted all of his processors, freezing him there on your doorstep.
“Connor?” You said with a surprised but excited grin.
“Gumbo.” He replied after a moment and awkwardly held up the Tupperware.
“Oh, uh that looks good, thank you. Do you want to come in?” You ask and hold the door open for him.
“Yes, thank you.” He said and stepped inside, lightly brushing up against you as he did. Connor wasn’t sure but he thought he heard your breath catch.
“I can take the food, and oh my! Those roses are beautiful.” You say in awe as you take the vase from Connor.
“Beautiful creatures deserve each other.” Connor said without thinking. The entirety of your face turns bright red and your turn away toward the kitchen to hide it.
“Not that I’m not happy to see you but what are you doing here?” You ask regaining your composure.
“I wanted to spend more time with you, but I didn’t know how to proceed on the matter. Hank suggested the food and flowers as a start.” Connor answered truthfully as he scratched behind your dogs ear. You lean against your kitchen counter and fail to fight a bashful grin.
“Well I am grateful, but you could’ve just asked, I like spending time with you Connor.” You say. You can tell he’s having a hard time focusing with how scantily clad you're dressed and it makes you feel slightly accomplished.
“I like spending time with you too Y/N.” He replies awkwardly. You look away from his gaze, something about it is making your stomach do backflips, and go to admire the roses he brought you.
“Ow!” You wince and pull your hand back, having sliced your finger open on a thorn. Connor is immediately in front of you, stopping the minor bleeding with a kitchen rag.
“Are you alright?” He asks in a low, gentle murmur.
“Yeah, just a little cut, no big deal.” You reply looking up into his brown eyes. His lips are inches away from yours and you feel a desperate hunger to close the distance between them. He delicately tucks a strand of your hair behind your ear and then uses the same hand to tilt your chin up to his.
“Can I-“Connor begins to ask but the softness of your moment is cut off by the loud vibration of your cell phone going off.
“It’s probably work.” You say as your stomach drops. Connor blinks a few times and nods.
“Yes. A homicide was just reported.” He replies, his tone dripping with disappointment. You reluctantly release his hands and sigh.
“I should probably put pants on for that.” You say trying to lighten the mood.
“Unfortunately, I’d have to agree with you,” Connor says. You turn toward your bedroom but then turn back to face Connor and stand on your tiptoes to peck his cheek.
“We’ll have to continue this some other time.” You promise. Connor places his hand on the spot of his cheek you kissed, a wide grin forming.
“I’d like that Y/N.” He replies, his LED flashing like a Christmas tree.

Happy Birthday (Connor x Reader)
Note: So, I decided to also write a very short, one shot fanfic from DBH fandom because I've been obsessing with it AGAIN. Thank to DE. Haha! Anyway, I had this idea because it's my birthday and that inspired to write this short fic.
To anyone who's also celebrating their birthday today...HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎉🎈🎂♥
P.S. Sorry for the bad grammar. English isn't my mother tongue. Also, I am not a writer. I'm an artist. I draw and design stuff. I just really like writing. 😂😂😂
Pairing: Connor x Reader
Word Count: 1,879
Also: L/N = Last Name and N/N = Nickname
~
It's your birthday. But to you, it's just like any ordinary day.
You never told anyone your birthday because you never celebrated it. Not because you hated it, or you're trying to get out of the responsibility of treating your friends for a drink or something. It's just that, you didn't see the point of occasionally celebrating it.
And it wasn't just your birthday that you don't celebrate, even the holidays.
So, despite it being your birthday, you treated the day just like any other work day. Besides, you were too busy finishing all your reports that's due that day. You didn't have time to get distracted because you didn't want Fowler yelling at you again.
It was already late at night. You, and a few other people were the only ones left at the precinct. You just finished typing the last report of the day when someone suddenly tapped your shoulders.
You flinched in shock before you turned your chair to see who it was. "Connor?"
Connor stood in front of you, a large box on his arms. "Happy birthday, detective L/N!"
You stared at him, blinking a few times. You were dumbfounded. "How did you- nevermind." You cut yourself off, reminding yourself that Connor still is an android, despite him turning into a deviant. He probably got that information from your profile.
"Here, open it." He urged like a child excited for their Christmas present, as he handed you the large box.
Despite your tiredness and sleepiness, as soon as you opened the box, you're face lit up. "You didn't." You told him as you pulled out a German Shepherd puppy from the box. "Connor…"
"I've noticed that you always volunteer to look after Sumo when Hank and I are away. And you always stop on your tracks to pet a dog when you're walking outside. I also saw on your social media accounts that you used to have a German Shepherd named Max when you were 12 years old." Connor informed.
"Wow." You chuckled. "You really did your research."
"I wanted to give you the perfect gift."
You almost blushed at his statement. You've been attracted to him ever since you started working as a detective. But you never acknowledge it because you wanted to focus on your work.
But lately, he had been acting kinder and sweeter to you, which makes it difficult for you to ignore you feelings. It makes you wonder…does Connor like me too?
"This is perfect. Thank you, Connor." You replied, giving him a genuine smile.
He stared at you for a few seconds, his LED flickering to yellow, before he finally spoke. "You're welcome, Detective L/N."
"I told you. Just call me N/N."
"N/N." He repeated, the corner of his lips forming a small smile. "What would you name your dog?" He curiously asked.
"I'm not sure yet. Why don't you name it?" You suggested.
You watched as Connor's LED flickered to yellow once more, then back to blue. "What about Happy?"
"Happy." You smiled. "Why Happy?"
"Because I noticed how your mood improved when you saw him. You were happy. He makes you happy."
"You make me happy, Connor." You replied. But your eyes immediately widened as soon as you realized what you just said. "I-I mean-" You stuttered, trying to make your situation less awkward.
But Connor had cut you off. "Seeing you happy makes me happy." He replied with a smile. A real, humanly smile.
And it made your heart flutter as your cheeks finally blush.
"Where's Hank?" You asked, trying to hide your blush as you cradled the puppy on your arms.
Connor's eyes widened as if he was just reminded of something. "Let's go to Jimmy's Bar."
"What?" You looked at him with a confused expression on your face.
"It's your birthday, we should celebrate."
~
You told Connor that you still had to finalize your reports, but he insisted on waiting for you. You didn't want to bother his precious time, so you tried to reason. But after several attempts, and him bring stubborn, you finally gave up.
It only took you about 30 minutes before you finished finalizing your reports and sending it to Fowler. You and Connor finally left the precinct after that, and drove to Jimmy's Bar using your car. You didn't expect anything from there, except maybe having a drink with Connor, even though he's incapable of it.
But when both of you got there, you were surprised to see a crowd of people greeting you; All your close friends at the precinct was present.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" They all yelled as soon as you walked in.
"What…" You were at a loss for words. You were astonished. You never thought this would ever happened to you.
"What? You think you can just go home and not celebrate your own birthday?" Hank teased.
"How did…"
"Connor told us."
You turned to Connor, and he had the goofiest grin on his face. You felt your heart flutter once again, another blush creeping into your cheeks.
Everyone greeted you, coming up to you one by one, and presenting you their own gifts. You almost cried. You never had a birthday party as an adult. The last birthday party you had was when you were still little. You didn't even expect anyone would be throwing a party for you.
And just like a normal birthday party, they had a cake prepared for you to make a wish on as they sing Happy Birthday.
~
You spend the whole night chatting and laughing with your friends, while drinking beers and sharing the large cake they bought for you. And finally, after a few hours of partying, everyone started to go home, wishing one last happy birthday.
It is work night anyways.
It came to a point where it was only you, Hank, Connor and Jimmy was left at the bar.
"Alright. I think I've had enough for the night." Hank announced, standing up from his seat while taking one last sip at his drink.
"Is Connor going to drive you home?" You asked as you walk him out of the bar. Of course, you were concerned for him. He's like a father figure to you. Just like he is to Connor.
"Kid. I always drive home drunk." He replied confidently, making you chuckle. "Where is that android anyway?"
"I think he's discussing something with Jimmy." You replied, pointing back at the bar.
"So, he got you the dog eh?" He asked, scratching the ears of the puppy that you were cradling on your arms.
"Yeah." You smiled, looking down at Happy, a faint blush appearing on your cheeks as it reminded you of earlier events.
"You know, this was all Connor's idea." Hank suddenly said, making you snap your head at him.
Your eyes widened as you stared. "What?" You asked in disbelief.
You thought it was like a group idea. Like all your friends gathered up to make this party happen. You didn't know this was all Connor's.
"He organized all of this. Even paid for everything. Lover boy's got it hard for you." Hank chuckled.
Before you could say anything, Connor came out of the bar, approaching you and Hank.
"Hey, Connor. I was just about to leave." Hank greeted.
"Okay." He nodded. "Is everything alright, N/N?" He asked in concern as he noticed you staring at him with a surprised expression written all over your face.
"I-I'm fine." You replied after a few seconds.
"She's just tired." Hank added, helping you out on your situation. "Get her home safe, will you?"
"Sure, Hank." Connor nodded.
"Alright. I'll see you kids tomorrow. Good night." Hank waved both of you good night as he walked to his car.
"Good night."
~
"Did you like your gift, N/N?" Connor curiously asked as he drove you back to your place.
"I love it." You replied, smiling at him. "Thank you for tonight, Connor."
"You're welcome, N/N."
It wasn't a long ride to your home. You and Connor spent the rest of it in comfortable silence as you listen to whatever was on the radio. And finally, after 15 minutes, you arrived.
Connor walked you to your front door, helping you carry all the gifts you recieved from your friends.
But before you unlock the door, you turned to him and asked, "Why did you do this? I mean, I appreciate it so much. I'm just curious because no one ever done this for me before."
Connor placed down the gifts he was carrying. He didn't respond immediately though. He just stared at you for a while as if he was in deep thought. You watched as his LED turned from blue to yellow and then back to blue.
"Connor?" You asked.
And finally, he replied, "When you first came to the precinct, the moment I first saw you, I felt something that I didn't understand. It was a knew feeling that I've never felt before. I found myself constantly wanting your company, and wanting to make you smile. And when I asked Hank about it, he explained to me that what I was feeling is love. I asked him what love is for a human and he explained it to me. But, it was still a little confusing to me that time, that's why I never said anything to you.
When I found out that it's your birthday, I knew I had to do something special for you. Because that's how humans do it, and because you're special…to me. Then earlier this morning, I realized what Hank was telling me before about love. I now understood what he meant. That's why I knew I have to finally tell you that…I love you."
You felt your heart bursted inside your chest. An overwhelming excitement and happiness filled your emotions. You couldn't help but pull Connor into a kiss. You felt his lips on yours. It was cold but soft.
He didn't move for a few seconds, and you thought he had short circuited. You noticed the light from his LED turning yellow, to red, to yellow, and back to blue. But when you were about to pull from the kiss, his hands slowly snaked it's way from your waist to your back. He pulled you closer to him, deepening the kiss as he finally responded back.
You felt like you were in the old movies. Fireworks exploded inside you. Your heart beat fast and your stomach turned into a knot. His lips was soft against yours, like a delicate butterfly fluttering its wings. It wasn't like anything you felt before.
After a while, you pulled back to catch your breath. A smile creeped on both your faces as you rested your forehead on his.
"Humans said that the first kiss is the best kiss. And I strongly agree with that." He told you, making you chuckle.
"Is this your first kiss ever?" You asked, lightly pulling your face away to take a better look at him.
"It is."
"Well," You replied, planting another soft kiss on his. "it's not going to be the only kiss."
He looked at you, his eyebrows furrowed, LED turning yellow. "What do you mean?" He curiously asked.
"I love you too, Connor."

Yoooo, this ain't what the fandom sees much, but Hank tryna flirt with some Ladies™, but he's nervous and bails, while Connor tries to be his Wingman
Hank's dating life is a mess. Connor tries his best to help.
At age 54, Hank wouldn't consider himself at the top of his game. Not because he was the worst looking guy around the block (he'd been told he had a lot of charm if he just put some effort into his looks), but because he's an unsociable recovering alcoholic with a nihilistic view of the world, and a morbid sense of humor that put people off.
It had been 4 years since he'd thought about going out to flirt. 3 out of those 4 years were spent in bars and at home, drinking himself into a stupor until the weight of the gun in his hand didn't seem so frightening.
2038 had been a turn point. 2039 was a chaotic mess, but he was getting better.
In the end, it's a very unlikely source that suggests he look into getting back into the flirting scene.
"You seem awfully bored when you end up getting dragged out here." None other than Carl Manfred himself, brings up one day while he sits on the man's couch, waiting for Connor to finish up with the others in the kitchen. Their meetings are very frequent now, in the final months of the year. Connor and North are New Jericho's lead security officers and their input is invaluable in the name of avoiding "incidents" like the one that happened in Washington. Sometimes Hank ends up having to come with because he's Connor's ride back, and because there's no need to call a cab every two days just to go to and fro.
"I'm not the kind to like sitting around staring at thin air." He replied nonchalantly as he tried to ignore the taxidermy animals squinting down at him in as judgmental a manner as a set of plastic dead eyes could. "I'd read, but I'm not exactly a fan of any of the books you could offer... No offense."
"None taken." Carl chuckled "I've always been told I was a bit of a drag when it came to what genres I indulged in."
"Let me guess, scorned lovers that fantasized about their idol reading erotica novels?" Hank snorted, smirking when he got a laugh out of Carl.
"The best lovers I've had were fascinated about philosophy. Although one of them much prefered when I recounted where I got my collections. He wanted to scalp the man who thought to stuff a cat into such a stiff pose like that..." Carl admitted "But yes. I've had a fair share of people who wanted me to read pornography rather than sate my curiosity. I'm sure the same has happened to you."
"Nope. Never had issues about what I liked to read, if I ever had anything good to really sink my teeth into." Hank sighed "Then again my ex-wife and I shared a lot of interests... And I never really did the whole dating thing up until I met her, so very little disagreements with ex-flings."
"Fair enough." Carl shrugged "But you know, it's never really too late to get back out there, if you ever do need anything else to attend to other than listen to an old man blabber on about his past..."
"What? Me? Go out there?" Hank blinked "To...To date?"
Carl shrugged calmly before looking over towards the kitchen. The androids seemed to be wrapping up their meeting.
"Not necessarily if you don't want to, but I'm sure it'd be nice to find some company to enjoy yourself with once in a while." Carl reassured as the others came pouring out of the kitchen, seeming satisfied with their discussion "Or you could get yourself a pet."
Not being particularly inclined to get another pet (Sumo was already enough of a handful), Hank decided to look into other things. Maybe a new hobby, or a trip to the gym to keep his mind off of things. But, since he wasn't entirely excited about getting some sunshine and adding activities to his life, Hank fell back on the dating option.
He'd not really made much of an effort since Lorraine left, and honestly he wasn't even sure where to begin.
He was better with his drinking, he wasn't as pissy anymore, and his clothing was clean and ironed to perfection (thanks to a certain OCD android). There was just one itty bitty little detail.
"Hey Connor...you wouldn't know how to cut hair, would you?" He called out from the bathroom as he stared at the long locks of gray hair. He had split ends and his beard looked a mess.
"I can download such information if you require it." The RK800 poked his head through the doorway, one eyebrow raised in mild curiosity. "Is there a particular reason you wish to change your usual appearence?"
"No reason...Just uh, you know. Feel like changing it up." Hank pulled his hair back a bit. He'd look a little better with short hair.
"Lieutenant, you are a terrible liar."
Hank furrowed his brow and glared at Connor who sheepishly smiled back at him.
"Can you cut my hair or not?"
"Certainly. And I can trim your beard while we're at it."
---
He's a little nervous when he steps foot inside the bar later that same night. He wasn't a lady's man in his youth, and he certainly wasn't a lady's man at his current age. He could wash up nicely, especially after a cut and a trim (Connor had done a fantastic job while also interrogating him on his "true" motives), but he lacked the confidence to chat up any women.
"Deep breaths Hank, women don't bite."
"Some do Connor." Hank sighed as he looked around. He'd never been so reluctant to go to a goddamn bar.
"... I was under the impression that only came up at least on a third date, after a paid dinner, too much to drink, and three hours of senseless coitus."
The old cop stared at the prototype.
"What the fuck kind of dates have you been on?!"
"Two. One with Chloe, another with a very drunk Simon... None of which ended that way, but Simon did cry for the remainder of his date and tell me those exact words."
"When did you go on a date with Simon, and how the fuck did you get him drunk?!"
"I am under the impression he wanted rebound sex, and some friends of Leo have been experimenting with thirium blends that emulate the effects of alcohol... It's uh... Still in experimental phase and three shots was more than enough to inebriate Simon..." Connor looked uncomfortable "I had to call North to have her pick him up. She was very disturbed."
"No fucking shit, sounds like a pretty bad night... I didn't even know androids liked sex or alcohol..." Hank ran a hand through his face.
"Neither did I, yet here we are..." Connor sighed. "Regardless of that bad experience, we should find you a suitable partner to spend the night with."
"That's what I've been trying since we set foot here, but so far I've only seen girls half my age and I'm not into cradle snatching..."
"How about that one? She's 49 and in good health, although her level of intoxication indicates she's here to forget rather than to party..."
"...Connor please don't scan people. It's cheating and a little creepy."
"...Sorry Hank."
"Yeah yeah, let's just... Keep looking."
---
They ended up going back home after stopping at a Chinese restaurant to buy takeout first. He could try online dating next. Maybe he could get a real interesting gal instead of getting catfished and having his organs harvested in some dodgy hotel.
Or Hank could get another dog. An option Connor wholly agreed with.
"Sumo wouldn't like it."
"He would if we got a female."
"... I feel like that's a jab at my failed attempt to hook up."
"Why lieutenant! I would never!" Connor smiled, ignoring the roll of Hank's eyes.
There was always next time...

Don’t Get Attached (Pt 3)
Part One/ Part Two Words: 1313 Connor x Daughter!Reader w/ Dad!Hank Anderson Warning: Talks a little bit about Hank’s past and his suicidal thoughts. Summary: While Hank and Connor go off to investigate their new case, Reader stays behind with Sumo to clean her father’s house and waits for them to get back.
“What are we gonna do with him, aye boy?” You asked Sumo as you scratched him behind the ear. You were, of course, talking about your father as you surveyed the disastrous state of his house. He’d said that he wanted to talk to you when he got back from working on his case with Connor, so you went to the kitchen and started cleaning the place up.
You cleared away all of the trash. Any dirty dishes you found were piled up in the sink to be washed later. What felt like a month’s worth of empty pizza delivery boxes were stacked up and tossed in the receptacle outside. The soft ting of glass beer and liquor bottles hitting each other echoed through the house for several minutes as you gathered them from their various perches. You found a broom and swept up the bits of dog food that littered the area surrounding Sumo’s bowl. You could only guess when the last time that had been done.
You also took care of the shattered glass from the window in the kitchen. From what Connor had said, the android broke the window trying to get into the house when he found your father unconscious. Your idiot father. You shook your head just thinking about him. If he wasn’t careful he was going to actually kill himself one of these days. You didn’t need to pick up the overturned photo on the table to know what had triggered his most recent downward spiral.
You’d been twelve-years-old at the time on the accident. The only reason you hadn’t been in the car with them that night was because you’d stayed home with your mother. Your parents were already divorced by that point. Heck they got divorced when Cole was two. Following the divorce, the only time you saw your father was during his visitation weekends. You couldn’t remember the reason now, but you’d been mad at your father that night. You hadn’t wanted to spend the weekend with him, but Cole insisted on going. They’d been on their way home Sunday night when they were hit by the truck.
Things changed after that. Your father blamed himself for what happened. He blamed you mother for wanting a divorce in the first place. He blamed the driver of the truck for not paying attention to the icy conditions on the road. He blamed the android surgeon for not being able to save his six-year-old son. After he started drinking heavily, your mother wanted to keep you from seeing him, but you knew that wasn’t the best thing for either of you.
You moved in with him and for a long time things were better. He cut back on the drinking. Before losing Cole, the two of you had never been particularly close but afterwards you talked every single day. He’d attended all of your school plays, drove you wherever you wanted to go, took you on small vacations now and then. He had his quirks, like how he didn’t like birds but he did like the musty smell of old fashioned paper books. But when you had to move out of the house, to be closer to your job across town, he started to get bad again. Bad enough for his new partner to find him passed out drunk, one click away from ending his life.
With the house now clean and Cole’s picture back in it’s rightful place on the shelf, you searched through the junk drawer in the kitchen for post-it notes and a pen. You smiled to yourself as you jotted down the first inspirational phrase that came to mind. You then found a spot on the bathroom mirror that hadn’t already been plastered with notes and fixed the new post-it there.
Dad, No one ever ruined their eyesight from looking on the brightside. – [Y/N]
It was almost a decade long game at this point. He’d been having a really bad day once, and you taped a note to the bathroom mirror that just said Smile. It intimidates your enemies more than a scowl. He grumbled about it the first time.
“Don’t go taping things to the mirror!” He insisted waving the post-it at you from the doorway. “That’s how you end up with streaks! And you’ll make the whole thing all sticky!” Despite his complaints, you saw the note taped back up on the mirror the next morning when you were getting ready for school. So you persisted, every once in a while jotting down something to let him know you were thinking of him. Something for him to have on bad days. As time went on and the ink began to fade on older notes, he would take them down and save them in the drawer of his nightstand He thought you didn’t notice but you did.
With the new post-it secured in the bathroom, you flopped down on the couch and started flicking through the channels. You weren’t looking for anything in particular, just killing time. Sumo came over and joined you after a few minutes. He placed his slobbery head in your lap and waited for you to pet him. Your thigh was saturated with dog saliva, but you didn’t mind.
“You’re not allowed on the couch, buddy. Think of how mad Dad would be if he saw you.” You reminded him. The dog looked up at you and seemingly rolled his eyes before shutting them tight and falling asleep.
“Same pal.” You yawned leaning backwards.

“Aww Sumo what are you doing? You know you’re not supposed to be on the furniture!” You were awoken sometime later by your father’s voice. You craned your neck for a sleepy glance at the front door. He was standing there, half in the doorway, watching you and Sumo cuddled up together. Connor was right behind him on the porch, probably getting soaking wet. “[Y/N], how many times have I told you, don’t let the dog on the couch?”
“Sorry, Dad.” You yawed. He could tell that you weren’t the least bit sorry. “He must have jumped up here while I was sleeping.”
“Mmm-Hmm.” He hummed. “He seems to do that a lot when you’re here. You coming in?” He asked the android standing behind him. “Or you wanna stay out there all night?”
“No, Lieutenant, I will join you inside.” Connor followed your father inside. You studied both of their faces and even the android looked exhausted.
“I’m going to change.” Your father grumbled before shutting the front door and walking off to his bedroom.
“Bad case?” You questioned Connor.
“I am not allowed to discuss active investigations with civilians.” He informed you.
“Oh, I know.” You nodded. “Detective Dad, remember? I just meant you both seem like you’ve had a tough night. Thought you might want to talk.” You shrugged and began flipping through the channels on TV again. Connor stood by the front door silently.
“Lieutenant Anderson is not married.” Connor observed, breaking the silence. “Or at least he does not wear a wedding ring.”
“No, you’re right. He’s divorced. Why do you ask?” You questioned, “It’s not part of your investigation is it?”
“No, No.” Connor shook his head slightly. “I was just thinking that most police officers are married. They have a husband or wife to share the burden of their work with. Are you married, [Y/N]?”
“If I was,” You yawned, “I probably wouldn’t be here watching my dad’s dog on a Saturday night.”
“I am also not married, because I am an android.” Connor explained. “But for some reason I find myself wishing I had someone to talk to about what happened tonight.”
“Well you can talk to me Connor.” You told him. “I’ll be your wife for the night.”
“What the fuck did I just hear?” Your father asked, stepping into the living room.
