Any thoughts on Tommy's new serious video?
I saw the “serious video” phrasing of this ask and had a moment of alarm that I missed something dark before I hit up the updates account and found yet another Tommy channel. This man is determined to take up a tenth of the channels I follow.
It's funny because the style of video he’s doing comes from the line of “older gent gives life advice while shooter footage plays in the background,” and after passing through Schlatt who lowered the legal age of advice giving to whenever he felt like it now we’ve got Tommy strutting onto the scene at eighteen and being very sincere but also still fairly naïve. Both of them were eager to start emulating a style of content that they loved without fully checking themselves, once again similar in an unlikely way.
There’s something tragically endearing about him listing off a series of YouTube trends / meta / waves gone by and calling them ‘sheer creativity’ because he’s got fond memories of them. Something being the product of cause and effect and circumstance doesn’t make it less genuine, but a lot of the moments that came before happened in a context and weren’t as pure of intention as he’s pitching them. (The song parody moment of YouTube was particularly rough.) It was a heartfelt idea with unfortunate evidence to try backing it up, an interesting start that kind of showcases where he’s at mentally.
If I could ask the universe for anything it would be to make the Tom channel a video blog channel, like an actual ‘blogpost but out loud’ channel. The format is interesting but aside from being encouraging + inspirational I’m not super sure he’s going to be able to handle an advice column by himself yet—he’s still the asker at this point in his life (as is the right and good thing for him to be, a normie would be a student for at least two more years) so I wonder what this feedback loop is going to look like as it plays out.
