"SAY IT."

I groan. "Salil, cut me some slack."

She keeps staring at me, which is usually not so intimidating, but right now she has the opportunity to tell Mom about what's going on, and I'd rather not get in trouble for what's really just a misunderstanding... At least that's how I'd try to explain it.

"Fine," I sigh. "Almil needed help with something, so I'm dropping stuff off for him at the ocean exit from Silmgal that he showed me."

"You can't do that!" She hisses.

I set my chin. "I can, and I will. He's a friend."

"He's on the other side! Do you even know what it's like down there without Ilr's protection? You've had that your whole life on the half-decent side! You can't just waltz into Clm's side and expect to walk out a free person," she scoffs. "Gods you're stupid."

"Salil, have you even seen the ocean exit? I'm bringing stuff in there and it's completely secluded. It's not even in one side or the other of Silmgal, it's in neutral territory. Clm doesn't know about it." I shake my head, frustrated at how much time she is making me lose here. Almil is waiting for me, and we run the risk of being caught the longer this takes.

"Neutral territory is a fancy name to say that Clm has his eyes everywhere. If his son knows about it then he knows about it.

"Whether or not Clm knows will be irrelevant in about fifteen minutes," I growl, zipping up the diving suit and pulling back my hair. "I'll be in and out. I'm dropping the package off and catching my breath and then immediately turning around. I won't be gone longer than 30 minutes, fifteen there and fifteen back. Tops." I pull on the special made gloves that I swiped from Mom for this. They've got extra grip and will help me crawl along the slippery rocks in the tunnel. "Hand me the harness would you?"

Salil reluctantly passes over the harness she's been keeping a death grip on. "What's your package even got in it?"

"Nothing relevant to you," I say coldly. If she had a little more faith I might have told her that it was plans from me and Mom and Myl to start tearing about Clm's side to make a take over easier and less chaotic. If such a thing was possible. At a minimum it was a plan to undermine faith in Clm, and establish faith in Almil, at least among Clm's men. If that was possible then we had a chance of being able to shut things down.

"At least be careful. You have forty minutes after you leave before I call Mimi and let her know what's going on." Salil hands me the package and watches me strap it into the harness. "Don't die, please."

I grin. "Well I haven't died yet. I might if you tell Mom though."

She rolls her eyes. "As if Babi would let her kill you. Don't be late."

I paste a serious look on. "Yessir!" I say, snapping to attention and giving a Mortdari salute. "I won't let you down!"

"Just go."

I grab the breathing equipment sitting by my feet and pull it on. "If you say so boss. Later!" I jump into the water, letting the cold wash over me. Forty minutes. Let's do this.

Person A: “What the fuck are you doing?”

Person B: “…Please don’t make me say it.”

I sigh and wince as I unwrap the bandage from my leg. I don't think it's supposed to hurt this much. "Dad, can you take a look at this?" Aside from watching what I'm doing, I try to avoid looking too much at the injury. I'd gotten on the bad end of a scuffle with Almil when Clm had come across us having a meeting. He'd shot a blast of magic at my leg, and that had shredded through my pants completely, leaving a bloody mess behind. Salil had helped me bandage it to try to avoid grabbing Dad and Mom's attention. That's clearly working so well right now.

Footsteps come down the hall in time with the throbbing pain from my calf. "What happened this time?"

I try to hide my grimace as he steps into my room. "I had a bad run-in underside." I don't think it should feel like my leg is burning.

Dad kneels next to my chair, and picks up my foot, tilting it so he can get a better view. He's silent for a moment too long before he looks at me again. "Astin, what happened?" His voice is as serious as the one night I saw mom stumble inside, blood pouring down her face. Then, he'd asked her what had happened, and then guided her upstairs immediately. She didn't come down for several days.

"I got caught in crossfire when I was talking to one of my informants," I say. That should be vague enough he can't figure out what happened.

"Was it a spell, or straight magic that hit you?" He sets my leg down, and runs a hand over his chin. "This looks badly infected."

I grimace. "It was straight magic. I tried cleaning it out the best I could. It's been like this for a couple days now."

Dad's head snaps up. "Days? When did this happen exactly?"

"Three days ago." I can feel I'm shrinking in on myself. "I didn't think it would get this bad."

Dad grabs the roll of bandages on the bed and starts rewrapping my leg. "We're going to Stlyl's immediately. He'll be able to see if he can heal this."

A wave of panic crashes down. "We can't."

"You don't get a choice in this." Dad's voice is rough. "This is not looking good. Grab a change of clothes just in case, and something to keep your mind occupied." He stands. "You have five minutes."

I grimace as I watch her be chained to the railing. The faucet will turn on any second now, spraying directly into her face, which still has the hood over it. "Answer our questions now, and we can negotiate further terms."

"Eat shit you motherfucker," she rasps through the hood. "Kill me alrea-"

Water sprays down onto her, drowning out the rest of her words.

I grip my nails into my palms. Since when did my father become like this? Why was I doing this for him? To her?

"Stop the water," I say.

"But Almil-"

"Stop the water," I say with more force. "She is too valuable to kill, and is better off alive in Ilr's hands than dead in ours. Turn. It. Off."

There's a creak as the water turns off, leaving her gasping on her knees, shoulders twisted painfully behind her as she sags to the ground. She's hacking water out of her lungs, but at least she's alive.

Thank whatever gods are listening, she's alive.

Have you ever felt angry at Clark Kent/his actions in the Smallville series?

Oh good lord, yes. More than once! 😆 But none so much as during the Arc of Suck, I imagine.

I would love to go back and rewatch the series after not watching it for a while, just to see how my perception has changed in retrospect. When the series was ending, I remember reading an interview with AlMiles in which they admitted they always found Clark/Superman boring. It explained SO MUCH about several of their choices over the years, including some that made me angry.

Hi, you know what Tom Welling thinks of the relationship between Lana and Clark. If he prefers Clois to Clana. Did he ever talked about it?

Thanks for the ask! I think other people have answered this better than I can, and while I don't like to force fandom/shipping on actors who are just paid to do their jobs, from what I can tell, Tom Welling does seem to prefer Clois. I don't pay much attention to the actors personal lives or really their outside interviews, but when asked to compare the ships, he did talk about Clois being a more mature relationship, which is why he felt it worked better. He's probably answered similar questions like this in the past, but I'm not quite sure where to find them. He spoke positively about Clana in the early years but even as early as s4, he mentioned how Lois brought out a different side to Clark and wanted to try something new. I think he seemed happy with the Clois when it finally happened.

Plus, he is a decent actor but I've always thought he looked kinda checked out in s7. Neither he nor KK seemed thrilled with the rehash. I'm not surprised that 1) she left and 2) he wanted to get producer credits in s9. Maybe hoped to have a little say and control, especially since AlMiles barely seemed to listen to him.

Almil strolled down the street towards the Hidden Eyes, a tavern recommended by one of her friends. As she approached an ally twilight mist started to pour out of it and fill up the street. Almil slowed to a stop as heavy footsteps sounded out from the mist, and a very tall figure appeared out of the mist. At first Almil thought it was just a really tall person but as they approached Almil they could see key differences. Everything about them was too long and they seemed to have too many parts. As they got closer another two sets of arms appeared from behind their back and all of them had an extra joint. They stopped in front of a frozen Almil and 8 eyes peered down at her.  “ohh…” She gulped, “Can I help you?”

So, basically you're saying they're keeping DP around due to the cronyism that got her hired and because they think writing for the title character, Barry, is boring now? Well, all of those people need to leave then! Were those first showrunners of Smallville fired or pushed to leave? And why would the WB allow irrelevant characters to damage both shows? I'll even add how Fe ruined Error. Same m.o. Made up or est. character from another hero's story who's white, nerdy, and bland.

I think a lot of times, it seems like CW shows are unwilling to let people go who have been around for a few years, even when it would help the show to move on. I’m sure when you’ve worked with someone for several years and they’re nice and friendly (to you, at least), you like want them and don’t want to write them off before they want to leave (essentially firing them). I don’t know that it never happens - I don’t watch a lot of CW shows - but the CW seems more reluctant to get rid of longer-running actors than other networks or shows I’ve seen.

As for the show runners... I’m not talking about Eric. As far as I can tell from interviews, he does seem more interested in Barry’s story than we’ve seen in the last two years. I don’t know if AJK or TH admitted for finding Barry boring in the same way that AlMiles said they’d always found Superman to be a boring character. But I think it’s pretty apparent in how Barry was treated in S4. And even in S5, IMO. I remember at one point last year wondering - outside of explaining why Barry’s gone and Nora had powers, how much did it really matter that Barry was the Flash? How much was S5 about Barry’s growth versus, say, Nora’s? I know some don’t agree with my assessment of S5, but I certainly didn’t feel the compelling interest in his character in the writing last year. But unless TH comes out and talks about his perception of the character as AlMiles did, we may never know for sure.

As for why the show runner’s left Smallville...depends who you ask, I suppose. They left when KK did, and they clearly saw the show as the telling of the tragic romance between Clark and Lana. So maybe they decided to leave with her. But at least one article back then claimed “inside sources” said they left because of friction with the cast, specifically Welling. That Welling was burned out and unhappy with the writing for his character and he kept talking about wanting to quit. But the WB made boatloads is money from the show and were determined to go 10 years. So they got rid of the original show runner(s) because of friction between them and Welling. Other sources claimed it was due to budget cuts. So who knows?

I will say that four show runners stepped in after AlMiles left to helm the show. And after the debacle of S8, which left almost every group in fandom alienated and enraged, it was announced two would be leaving for another show. Voluntarily, or at the behest of TPTB? Again, depends who you believe. We do know that the president of the WB sat in on contract negotiations with Welling to make sure he got what he wanted to renew his contract. Which reportedly included the show runners laying out exactly what his story would be in S9.

As for why the WB let them do what all they did...well, they made it very clear back then that they considered the show to be an “Elseworlds” AU. That it was its own thing, that had no impact on their comic or cinematic universes. And my understanding is that WB is now and always has been VERY compartmentalized, with movies kept distinct from TV kept distinct from comics, etc. (It’s part of why they tend to remove rights from TV shows to use characters when they’re going to be used in movies - with the only real exception so far being Flash because they can’t write him out for the movies without ending the show. At least to my understanding of how they run things.)

I think they kept that same “hands off” mentality with the current ‘verse was launched. However, with Johns making his displeasure over some of the choices made known (specifically the treatment of BC), I wonder if they are more hands on with shows launched now and in the future. But I suspect it’s hard to retroactively evert more control. I’d have to ask my brother (since he worked in TV for a few years), but just thinking from a contract standpoint. If you sign over rights to use characters with the only restrictions being X and Y, you may not really be able to go in later and add a new restriction Z. At least not easily. And because of the compartmentalization, I think WB really does want to more or less let the shows have the creative freedom to do what they want to do. As long as the shows make them the money they expect to make from them, I think they prefer to take a stance of noninterference. But if that gets needlessly put in jeopardy (as happened with Smallville), we might see them more willing to step in, like they did with Welling. Because they were DETERMINED to get 10 seasons out of a show that was very lucrative for them.

However, as licenses for characters are handed out post-BC being killed off, I’d be curious to watch and get a sense if they’re tightening restrictions at all. Flash was licensed before that happened, though, so I don’t think you’d see any difference there.
