Carter was 18 when he knew that you were the one he was going to marry. You had been together since 9th grade, you followed him everywhere for hockey, and you had always been the biggest supporter in his life (besides his family). It just made sense that one day he would man up and ask you the question.

Even though Carter knew so young he wanted to be with you forever it took years in Philly for him to find the strength. He debated on the perfect restaurant, the ring, and the audience. No matter how much planning he put it–he could just never do it.

Until the two of you were laying in bed one night.

“Carter, are we ever going to get married? I don’t mean to sound weird but like, we’ve been together since we were 14,” you asked in a small voice as you faced away.

Shit. Carter knew about the ring in his bedside table drawer. Silently, he shuffled to grab it. You rolled over to watch him.

“Hun, this isn’t the way I wanted to ask,” he gulped in a breath of air, “but no matter what I asked–I always knew that we could get hitched and have a couple of kids. If you want that to happen sooner rather than later then I have a ring in this hand for you. Just say yes.”

“Of course! Although, can we wait on the ‘kids’ part for a bit?”

“Yes,” he giggled and pulled you close to him so he could slip on the ring.

Change is good, at least that’s what everyone kept saying. Moving to a new city? That was good. Meeting a new person that wasn’t Your stupid ex? That was hard, but better than staying alone.

You thought it would always be awful, but it turned out great. Colorado welcomed you with open arms.

Still, Cale worried that he wasn’t as good as your past was. Of course, you liked to reminisce and talk about your hometown. Never to put Cale down, though.

“Are you sure that you are happy here. You always talk about your past like you aren’t.”

“Cale,” you said as your palms pressed to his rosy cheeks, “It’s not the same, as it was. It’s better.”
