AITA for communication problems causing tension?

I’m friends with person B, and we’ve been friends for years. I’m potentially a system and transmasc (relevant later). Several parts dislike B and do not want to be close to her, while others are the exact opposite. This results in our behaviour towards B changing drastically. Sometimes we seek out touch from B and want to be close to her, other times we can’t stand to be close to her and get uncomfortable when she touches us. Sometimes this even includes using a different version of B’s name so people don’t think we’re dating (B is transfem and uses both her ‘deadname’ and a slightly girlier nickname of her deadname. She uses both, I’m not fully deadnaming her, but she slightly prefers the nickname. However when others, especially those that don’t know she’s trans, hear the nickname they assume we’re dating and that often makes us viscerally uncomfortable.).

This is a special situation around B — she has expressed interest in us (both /x and /r), and is generally very touchy/affectionate with us in a way few of our other friends are. She treats other friends (and strangers lol) with the same amount of affection, but the amount/consistency of it is a bit higher with us. B also rarely asks for consent before touching people, even those who have previously expressed mixed consent, like us, and seems oblivious to nonverbal cues that someone may not be enjoying it (even fairly obvious ones, like moving to another side of the room). This whole problem has only appeared in the last year or so, after she started trying to touch us. I have trauma stuff that results in a hell of a fawn/people-please response. I also feel rude having such drastically different responses (one day ‘sure you can lean on me’ and the next ‘please stay 6 feet away’) and would hesitate to directly communicate even without that. So she only responds to direct verbal cues to stop, I can’t give direct verbal cues to stop (without therapy to work though my issues first), and we’re stuck.

Our major behaviour switches are definitely confusing for B. It doesn’t harm our friendship overall, but it creates some tension as she assumes previous consent still applies and tries to touch us as we continuously move away from any attempts. It might also create some personal worries for her that we all dislike her or hate her or something, although this is a little more speculative. I’ve tried to mask over it, pushing down discomfort and not expressing wanting more/less touch in order to try and present a single, unchanging comfort level to make things easier between us, but have had limited success.

It’s so funny when conservatives point out a problem with neoliberals but then miss why the problem is bad and then pin it on leftists because they can’t tell the difference. Like the issue with “woke tv shows” is that corporations are marketing people’s identities to them while simultaneously taking money from people who want to massacre them. Yes, it’s disingenuous. Not because it’s representation, though, because it’s bad representation.

They use this a lot to give themselves the benefit of the doubt. Like they’ll say something about not trusting doctors and the leftists they’re talking to know that medical fraud and imperialism is real so it’s not like they can disagree with them on that point, but what they really mean is that they think COVID isn’t real and they’re flat earthers. They won’t tell you that. They’ll wait until they’ve gotten you on their side enough to show you their cards because they like to pretend to be misguided moderates until they’re able to use their ideologies to their advantage, but they aren’t saying doctors are racist they’re saying that sick people are only sick because they victimize themselves and only white supremacist assholes are trustworthy doctors. They aren’t actually stupid, it’s all pretend. They’re trying to make you sympathetic.

Some of their followers are actually just missing the point, though. And even if they aren’t it makes them easier to debate with because when they are so hellbent on pretending to be on the same side it’s hard for them to actually disagree with you. Most people get so upset at the idea of being on the same side as these people that they lash out, but the trick is to keep having the same take as them but with a nuanced opinion (i.e. corporations having diverse characters is bad because they don’t actually care about these people and they just try to make their identities more marketable to the centrist public) and then watch them scramble to disagree with you without just admitting that they think trans people should die.

I first really noticed this when I was arguing with someone about representation in a YouTube comments section because I am that dumbass. They said something about having nothing against trans people and having a trans friend and just disliking “forced representation.” They gave a bunch of examples of corporate tv shows making shitty representation that actually harms the community they’re supposed to be representing so they could make money. I wondered for a moment if these examples were actually chosen because they knew the writing was bad and they just were missing the point of what made it bad, or if they thought the problem was that people were allowed to be represented in the first place. I wondered if they even knew which point they were trying to convey.

Then I accidentally clicked on their username. YouTube has this thing now where you can see the last comment someone made on the channel whose video you are currently looking at. Their comment was them deadnaming and misgendering Elliott Page intentionally and calling trans women perverts. I told them I saw it and that shut them up. It was amazing,

That’s the whole thing that channels like Prager U pull. They say something that everyone agrees with for different reasons, and once they have you on their side they slowly funnel the logic they used for that into more and more absurd political opinions. The goal is to appear logical at first and then funnel you into extremism, and they have the people who listen to them repeat the same politically vague arguments elsewhere to achieve the same affect and make their side appear more reasonable than they are.

Whenever a conservative think tank says something that you agree with but for reasons that you don’t agree with, that’s intentional. Don’t pretend you don’t agree with them, that’s what they want. Agree with them and wait for them to make the next move. Trust me, tell them that their conclusion is actually antiracist if they’re making it for the right reasons. They will blow up. Tell them that yes, the government is suppressing people’s freedom of speech and give the examples of black people being thrown out of court rooms and disabled people and trauma victims being publicly gaslighted. Turn their two faced logic into the fuel for your nuance. Not just because it makes things easier, but also because it’s funny.

Something that really messed me up as a kid was listening to my mother hate herself.

She hated her body. Always saying she was fat and her boobs were too small and that she wanted implants one day (never happened). She also expressed dislike about my appearance to me. My posture and my acne were big ones. I was taught to hate my appearance because my mother hates her appearance and disliked mine. I look just like her. I always have. If you put a photo of me next to a photo of my mother at the same age we look like the same person. So to listen to her be so vocal about hating how she looks was so fucking damaging to me. And I don't know how she couldn't have realized that. I don't understand how she didn't see that by hating herself she was teaching me to do the same. She always treated me like an extension of herself, wanting me to do the things she wanted to do, but couldn't. She always pushed me to do things like be a nurse (no) and to marry a nice Christian boy (no) and have a bunch of babies (NO). She also never cared to get to know me because she had this version of me she had created in her head and she was still trying to mold me into that. She refused to accept that I wasn't and would never be that person and that I am my own person. She has refused to get to know the real me.

I have wanted so badly to have a real relationship with my parents, but I don't think it'll ever happen. I am too many of the things they hate. They are too full of hate. I just crave love and they don't want to offer that to me unless I be what they want me to be. I am not valuable to them as the person I am.

My parents are getting older. And I'm terrified of losing them, I'm terrified of them dying. Because I don't have a relationship with them at the moment and I want one so bad. And if they go before we fix things (if we fix things) I think it might ruin me a little. I just want so so badly to have my family back and to be loved by them. Right now I don't see it ever happening and that hurts a lot. My mother doesn't care, tho, if I'm hurting. She's made it clear that her feelings are the only ones that matter. I have to sacrifice mine in order to have a relationship with them and I'm just not willing to do that.

My sister is also queer, but somehow she tolerates them. I don't understand how. Probably because she's the golden child and can do no wrong by them and she is so perfect. She gets treated so much better than I ever have by them so I guess she isn't as bothered by it, but I have received basically no decent treatment from them my whole life. I've always felt like a burden and a failure to them. It's funny how my sister and I have had such contrasting childhoods and experiences with our parents.

Ngl, I always found it interesting how Tom has a "Muggle" or mundane last name, but I find the word "Riddle" to be one of the most mysterious and unique names in the HP canon, considering the definition of the word and all. I know Tom dislikes his name, but I can't help but think that "Tom Marvolo Riddle" rolls off the tongue quite nicely.

Tom Riddle is a wonderful name! I strongly dislike that the stupid anagram idea gave us ‘Marvolo’ and kept his first name as Tom and not Thomas, but that’s all anger at JKR (as though I needed more reasons). In-universe, it’s one of the best names we get.

And, because I love the name, I like to play around with Tom’s dislike of it. Sometimes it’s fun to play it straight—I’ve mentioned before that I am fond of Lord Voldemort as an allegory for the trans narrative, and taking on a new name and appearance can be a cornerstone of that. In that context, the people who insist on deadnaming him become particularly horrible. It’s always a great angle to explore in the Albus and Voldemort relationship.

But when I don’t want to focus on the significance of renaming oneself, I love exploring other ways he might feel about his name. For example, does he have any reason to hate it if he has a passable relationship with the father who shares it? Or, maybe a Tom who has grown older and begun to reflect on his life, who is not yet living as Lord Voldemort full-time, recognizes that the revulsion towards his name was a symptom of adolescence. Perhaps he‘s able to make peace with it as part of making peace with other parts of himself in a story where he decides not to start a war.

Other characters can be fun foils, as well! I’ve let his romantic partners express that unique names aren’t necessarily better, they simply have a different set of challenges. Hermione laments the oddness of a name that nobody can pronounce in ‘You Should Know.’ Thoros has called out his disconnect from the home culture of his name a few times. ‘Tom’ comes with no expectations; Tom Riddle is allowed to define it.

Dissatisfaction with a name comes in many forms, and not all of them necessarily mean the dissatisfied person wants to change their name. We learn to live with all manner of things we dislike about ourselves.

“a local not-well-known young superhero (Glimmer) gets a huge crush on other superhuman girl’s alias (She-Ra) and dreams of teaming up with her and kicking ass together, until she accidentally meets the girl in question (Adora). she is flustered and embarrassed and stops her fangirling, only to realize she’s actually falling for her now friend and teammate, this time for real”

a more detailed summary follows

Glimmer is a second-gen superhuman (teleportation powers obviously); her mom’s a first-gen with an impervious immune system who worked closely with a group of scientists to figure out the nature of her and other superhumans’ powers, which is how she met Micah (a scientist)

Glimmer juggles being a vigilante behind her mom’s back and attending college (tho skipping classes quite a lot). she exhausts and stresses herself out but refuses to quit because she wants to actually use her powers and make a difference. her and Bow are a hero duo (Bow is a regular human but is smart as fuck and one heck of an archer) and have matching costumes. they mostly watch over the protesters on rallies making sure cops or provocators don’t bother them. very occasionally there are actual criminals they get to stop, but usually nothing serious, just stolen bags and stuff. Glimmer is antsy and wants to do something big

one day a new superhero catches everyone’s attention. she’s strikingly different from everyone else: she doesn’t hide her face, she doesn’t talk to press, she vanishes from the scene as suddenly as she appears, and people only know her supposed name from the letters engraved into the massive blade she carries: SHE-RA

Glimmer gets a very obvious huge crush on her, which Bow won’t stop teasing her about. but it’s not only that ’girl pretty’ (altho, yes, that too): Glimmer is also absolutely enamoured by She-Ra’s seeming courage and confidence. while she has to hide her powers from everyone, wear contact lenses to mask her eye color and unnatural glitter, avoid other college students because she can’t trust herself to not accidentally blurt her secret out over lunch, while she feels like the whole world (and most often her own mother) is telling her to be ashamed of herself, She-Ra’s walking the streets without a mask on. Glimmer won’t stop dreaming about finding her and teaming up with her - until she bumps into a homeless blonde girl in some shady bystreet and the oh so familiar sword falls out of the girl’s backpack

Adora is a subject of an organization that experiments on kidnapped orphaned kids, trying to artificiality enhance their DNA and raising them to fight superhumans who are deemed dangerous. the organization considers itself kind of like a counter-force to the growing population of people with mutated genes and wants them under governmental control

being one of the most resilient and strong trainees, Adora is chosen for the project “SHE-RA”, gets injected with the DNA of a deceased superhero which gets triggered through the exposure to radioactive materials in She-Ra’s sword (specifically the stone). during the procedure things get out of hand, Adora is overwhelmed and loses control over her body, goes full berserk She-Ra mode, crashes the lab in a frenzy and escapes with the sword; she finds her way to the nearest city and, suffering a temporary memory loss, wanders its streets scared, confused and alone, only vaguely remembering that the sword is important and clinging onto it

she finds herself near sites of accidents more frequently than she would like to, and in these moments feels the sword responding to her emotion and desire to help. she doesn’t like the feeling of it almost forcing itself into her hands and is pretty scared of her powers - but can’t seem to let go of the blade. until it’s forcibly taken away from her by a total stranger (who apparently can teleport?), and the stranger is very angry and demands to know who Adora is and how she got her hands on a superhero’s property

Adora’s pretty angry too - both at the accusations of her stealing the damn thing and at the yelling girl herself. and wary of her, ready to take her down. she still can’t recall how she got where she is now but she does remember her childhood, her training and the things she was told: superhumans are unstable and dangerous

they both immediately dislike each other out of various prejudices and are this close to throwing hands while Bow is desperately trying to mediate the conversation. after somewhat diffusing it he asks Adora about her situation and offers her help. she, altho reluctantly, accepts it: she doesn’t have any better options, and these two seem... nice? Glimmer too starts feeling quite empathetic towards her very soon, finally noticing that Adora’s tired and clearly hungry, completely anihilating Glimmer and Bow’s lunch subs in under a minute. however she is still not entirely sure she trusts her, especially since Adora herself can’t really explain how she got She-Ra’s sword - that is until Glimmer get to see the transformation with her own two eyes, and is. quite overwhelmed. she’s only seen She-Ra on tv before, and now she is right here in her full radiant glory and that is a bit too much to handle

the squad of three starts their investigation trying to figure out what happened to Adora, at first unaware that the Horde is on their tail looking for their project

actually meeting Adora and getting to know her better makes Glimmer stop unconsciously idealizing She-Ra; she finally gets over her fangirly crush. eventually tho Glimmer catches herself developing actual deep feelings. the thought of Bow’s a) intensified teasing, b) happy excited meddling is terrifying

Adora is going through a lot. she doesn’t want to fail people who helped her, and Glimmer, not fully understanding the complicated feelings Adora has about her powers, comes off as a bit pressuring when she talks about the asses the three of them are going to kick together, now that She-Ra is on their side. they go through some communication issues, but eventually through her actions Glimmer manages to get it across that she genuinely cares about Adora’s well-being, making it easier for her to open up, so they can finally work it out. Adora in her turn learns about Glimmer’s complicated feelings about her powers and capabilities, how she desperately wants to be herself unapologetically and prove that she is worth something and use whatever power she has to make the world a better place. over time they both get to really know each other and learn how to help and support each other, growing closer and closer and developing warmer and warmer feelings. it’s a nice and cozy slowburn

George was a part of the scientists’ group Angela worked with; after a horrible accident that costed them lives of superhumans and scientists alike (including Micah) he quit and cut off everyone he knew from it; the only exception is Spinerella and Netossa, because wlw/mlm solidarity. he and Lance needed another gay couple of their age to have brunch with

Spinerella and Netossa (that have. other names. normal ones) also helped Angela raise Glimmer and were her cool gay aunts. they had to move cities when Glimmer was 5 or 6 tho which Angela was quite happy about: it was painful and unnerving being around people from her old team, and she didn’t want her daughter following them on their path since the couple continued being superheroes. it was too late for that tho because her aunts were Glimmer’s biggest inspiration both through coming out and starting her vigilante business

Angela herself quit being a hero after losing Micah and currently works as a doctor, and is brilliant at her job. she often volunteers to work in quarantined areas, putting her immunity to a good use. it is possible that she doesn’t age and is immortal, they never got around to defining the exact limit of her powers

Angela, Micah, Casta, Spinerella, Netossa and George all knew Mara and worked with her. she died before the team fell apart, her sword and body were preserved by her friends. Weaver was a part of the research group as well and left when things started going south. she took (i.e. stole) some samples, including Mara’s sword and DNA, which she then used to bargain for a higher position in the Horde. project “SHE-RA” was her initiative

needless to say, everyone who knew Mara was deeply shocked by the new She-Ra suddenly appearing on the news. which makes Glimmer double as unwilling to let her mom in on what’s been going on in her life: Angela clearly doesn’t want to hear a single word about the new super in town

Started drawing their own sonic OCs on MS paint. All of their friends minus about 3 of them were from the internet, including their best friend Rachel and another person who emotionally abused Remy around ages 14-18. Said person is no longer in their life, yet it wasn’t a one-sided abuse(both were way too young to really know what they were doing to eachother was bad until it was too late). They were battling depression from as early as age 9 when their grandmother passed away from cancer, but really escalated in ages 11-14. They swear that the friends they made on the internet helped them get through it. Were big into anime and manga, with Jpop/Hello!Project becoming a huge part of their life in around 9th grade.Started dubbing under the stage name Pikaru and did dance covers. Many parental issues/self hate issues. Started working at 16 and dedicated their life to the company by the time they graduated, swearing it was the only thing they were genuinely good at/the only thing their parents were truly proud of. Went to their first concert senior year, Berryz Kobou at an anime convention. Went to a Metal concert a few months later. the morning before the concert ultimately severed the bond of Remy and their mother after their mother screamed ‘I hate you’ while in the middle of a heated argument. Since then they can’t say ‘I love you’ back to their mother and doesn’t believe any compliments given to them from her.  Describe their  adult years (20+): Moved in with their boyfriend for about 1.5 years after Remy’s parents had to move out of state for their dad’s job. Very toxic living situation do to things beyond their/their boyfriend’s control. Went through a depression so bad it almost ruined their relationship. Started experimenting with gender and name around age 19, but started really getting there from age 21-23. Moved back in with their parents to another state when the situation became too much. The toxic friend from the internet officially broke ties with Remy about a year after they moved back in with their parents, completely shattering them(though in the long run being the best thing for both people involved). Worked two jobs for about 8 months with little to no days off, working about 3 months straight with no day off. They landed themselves in a mental clinic for a week between their PMDD, stress from work, and the loss of their ‘friend’. Had to quit their 2nd job. At age 22 they went to Japan for 21 days, a life long goal, and felt more at home there than anywhere in America. Planned to start getting their life together, find an apartment or at the very least start schooling.. until they found out they were moving a couple months later. Moved to the literal hell that was Florida, where it is dangerous to be out and open and where rich white people like to degrade everyone within their path. All of their dreams for a future were thrown in the garbage, and now they are just trying to work their remaining years away. Wanted to go to Tokyo International University for business economics but with the current state of America and the impending doom of another world war, they’ve just about given up on that dream.
