Alfred Burke strikes a husbandly pose as concerned neighbour Mr. Barnes in The Man Upstairs (1958)
#fave spotting#alfred burke#the man upstairs#1958#british cinema#public eye#character actors#the film is about Richard Attenborough as a tenant of a boarding house who has a breakdown and the reactions#of the other tenants (and authorities etc) to the situation. alas‚ of all the tenants‚ Alfie is the only one out of the house at the time#and returns (and thus enters the film) only at about the halfway point. this means that whilst the others have all had rather nice little#characterisations set up and been introduced to the viewer‚ Mr Barnes ends up having little personality beyond 'husband of Mrs Barnes'#Mrs B being one of the main supporting roles. needless to say Alfie attacks the role regardless and manages to bring out some subtle shades#of indignation at injustice (and even a hint of socialist conscience) to a fairly underwritten part. also of note‚ Mrs B is played by noted#Australian star Dorothy Alison‚ so Alf finds himself doing a modest little attempt at an aussie accent... I'll be honest i didn't even#notice the first few times he spoke‚ but it come out a little more when he's heated (a nice touch of realism actually)

What the Ghosts have been watching on TV
Everyone
Channel 4 Home renovation shows: They're free with ads and there's an infinite amount of them so Alison puts them on for the whole gang when she and Mike have work to do in same way people put on YouTube videos for their dogs. This has backfired slightly as all the ghosts now have very strong and conflicting opinions on how Button House should be renovated.
The Great British Bake-off: A whole family event, they all get very invested. Kitty thinks Alison Hammond is the funniest person in the world. The Captain feels normal about Noel Fielding. As well as a watching it live, I'm sure they've also watched the whole back catalogue together.
Mama Mia: This where the Captain learnt his ABBA songs from. Pat and Julian enjoy the nostalgic music and I think the others are just bewitched by the story and music
Robin
Anything David Attenborough: For obvious reasons. I think he'd get a kick out of trying to do his voice. The others sometimes join in.
Cunk on Earth/ Britain: I think they've got a similar attitude towards history and I think he'd find serious historians trying to answer silly questions incredibly funny
Horrible Histories: He watches this with Kitty, they both find poop jokes funny.
Humphrey
Antiques Roadshow: I'm not sure why. I honestly think he's just glad to watch anything.
Mary
Gardener's World: I think she misses being able to look after plants and I think she'd be endlessly fascinated by how hosepipes work.
Mio Mao: She loves them fucking plasticine cats. She will not stop singing the theme song
Honestly think she'll watch anything with anyone and would get invested, she seems like the ideal person to watch telly with.
Kitty
Ru Paul's Drag Race: I think they all watch this every so often but Kitty is invested. There's bright colours, fun outfits and drama, it's definitely Alison's go to when she needs Kitty distracted.
90s and 2000s romcoms: I believe that every couple of weeks Alison and Kitty have a "girl's night" where they watch all the romcoms that Alison used to watch with her mum, mostly because I love watching romcoms with my mum and Kitty deserves that. Kitty is particularly fond of Twilight.
Thomas:
Any Jane Austen adaptations: He watches them with Fanny as they were both big fans when they were alive (its the only thing they agree on). Kitty also joins sometimes. His favourite is the 1995 Pride and Prejudice tv show.
Fanny:
Grey's Anatomy: I haven't seen it but my mum's a big fan and there's millions of seasons, I think she'd pretend she's not that into it but she definitely is.
Call the Midwife: Same as above.
The Captain:
M*A*S*H: I've seen about half an episode of this but it seems to be about fit young men in a war so it sounds like his thing. Probably Pat's recommendation.
Our Flag Means Death: I think Alison has been trying to sneakily show Cap gay media under the pretence of saying "it's just a fun show about pirates". I think the whole gang watched it together. The Captain definitely didn't cry at the end of season 1 why would think that?
Pat
Taskmaster: I think this is one they all watch together but it's definitely one of Pat's favourites. He probably attempted to set up his own version of the show with the ghost which ended horribly.
Doctor Who: I think he watched the original run when he was alive and was absolutely ecstatic to find out they made more. Julian makes fun of him for it.
Julian
Have I Got News For You: Has been airing since 1990 so he definitely watched it while he was alive. I think he likes to keep up with current politics but not in a very serious way so this is his middle ground.
Succession: I haven't seen this show but it seems to be about horrible men in suits being horrible to each other which seems right up his alley.
The Thick of It: Speaking of horrible men in suits being horrible. I think he watches this with Robin who has absolutely no idea what's going on but just laughs when Julian does and they have the best time. Julian is constantly pausing to add his own anecdotes
What We Do In The Shadows: Alison put this on as a 'let's show the Captain it's ok to be gay' show and the Captain was immediately horrified so Julian adopted it. He identifies with Lazlo.

Finally getting round to this! I was tagged by @little-deathly-goose ♥️🪿
Three ships: I am such a multishipper so sorry, I cannot limit this to 3. I will limit it to Ghosts though. I'm a cap girlie at heart, so anything Cap is 😍. Top 5 would be Julian, Thomas, Pat, Humphrey, Mike. Outside of Cap, Julian/Robin is cute, Mike/Alison is amazing, and Alison/Thomas can do something to a person. I've also enjoyed Fanny/Mary, Mary/Annie, Kitty/Thomas, Mary/Kitty and tbh any combination you can think of. If it's well written I'll probably fall in love.
Last song: I don't keep track of my listening, so I'll give you the songs I'm playing on guitar at the moment. Rainbow by Dodie (cap-coded), and Youth by Daughter.
Last movie: probably puss in boots but like a couple months ago. I don't really watch films regularly, I don't have the attention span
Currently reading: The picture of Dorian Gray. I'm trying to read a load of classics so that I start to understand references.
Currently watching: Binging Taskmaster from the start (on series 2) and Clarkson's farm, week-by-week Taskmaster series 15 and Wild Isles (David Attenborough)
Currently consuming: permanently on my desk are chocolate digestives and butter mintoes
Currently craving: sleep
Tags: I'd like to tag @cursedskull-666 @brightsunnydaysofcastamere @friendlyneighborhoodkinkshamer @thesharkapologist and @revanchistsuperstar if you want to join in ^_^

I really need to make note of random thoughts I have cause last week I randomly thought about the trapdoor spiders that were as big as cats in the episode of animal planet or something it might have been Attenborough or someone, where they showed a reenactment of a spider going back to it’s burrow and then getting struck by lightning which fossilised it… and today I see an article about Australia finding a fossilised trap door spider that’s around 11 million years old .. like the amount of times this has happened to me. Like one time a long while ago I randomly had the thought of alison moyet and I was like why did she come to mind, of all ppl. I had to Google her name and it came up she was performing in my city and I had no idea. I’ve thought of random ppl I’ve met in my life and then I meet them…
why can’t it happen for other ppl or events to happen, maybe cause I never randomly think of them 🥲

The Foxes as dumb things people I know have said: part 2
(Warning: really dumb + swearing)
Neil: is Friday the 13th on a Saturday?
Aaron, holding Nicky’s phone: what’s your password? Nicky, without looking up: nipple
Matt, a slushy in front of him, about 10 straws connected together leading to his mouth, looking very pleased with himself: I can drink this like a flute
Nicky after watching shrek: I wouldn’t mind being donkey, I’d fuck a dragon
(Andreil babysitting Matt n Dan’s dog for the day) Neil: can it get down the stairs? Andrew: just throw it down and see what happens
Aaron: never kick a man in the balls. Alison: you’re not a man
Neil: you’re like my nan...dead
Dan: you can’t spell legendary without leg day
Nicky, tired of defending Andrew and his habit of holding knives to people: we love a sister stabber
Neil, restless runner boy who needs to stretch his legs: wanna go for a walk? Andrew: no Neil, v e r y restless runner boy: I smell that you do
Kevin: Do you think Apollo’s nipples are Suns?
Seth: I bet Nicky cries when he fucks
Neil, staring Nicky straight in the eye: my favourite actor is David Attenborough
Renee: I can sense deep in your soul that you’re a lesbian
(Headcannon that Seth dyed his hair pink at one point) Matt: the pinkness of your stoned eyes matches your hair Seth: wanker! Matt: It was an observation not an insult!

David Yates, director: Newt’s a real sweetheart. He’s obsessed with magical creatures so he’s quite geeky, very knowledgeable, but not very good with people, so he’s a little detached from society and the real world.
Eddie Redmayne: One of the things I love about Newt is that he's like a good wizard, but he's not like an extraordinary wizard.
Newt goes and finds fantastic beasts that are in danger, because they're a threat to the statute of secrecy [in the Wizarding World] and he looks after them. He's quite an idealist. He believes that – with the right education programs – fantastic beasts should be able to exist in magical society.
There's something in the script that J.K. Rowling describes as Keaton-esque in the way that he walks. He's not someone that's used to big cities and that was where I sort of started with him.
Alison Sudol: It’s not just about Newt coming into contact with new people; it’s like an entirely different universe for him. He’s been out in the wild for a while so it’s really extra new for him.
David Yates, director: Newt’s absolutely charming and very knowledgeable – he’s like David Attenborough in the wild world, except he deals with these crazy animals that are off the scale of extraordinary.
He’s really absorbed with the beautiful things in nature, the most amazing things in the natural world and so in this movie his journey is really to sort of appreciate what it is to have intimacy with things other than amazing beasts.
Eddie Redmayne: He does have a vulnerability but it's not like he's striving for a connection with humans. At the beginning of the film, he's very happy in himself. He's seemingly completely content in his skin, but it's only when he realises that he can have a connection, that he sort of begins to fall for Tina. He connects with Tina and it's very slow burn but it's been wonderful to play. They start as antagonists, finding each other deeply frustrating, but by the end there's a kind of sense of something.
David Yates, director: What’s lovely about Newt is that he’s very funny but very lonely at the same time, so there’s something really compelling about him. I think the audience will feel for him but they’ll also find him very endearing and very funny.
And he has a dark secret – as some of Jo’s [JK Rowling] characters do – which we discover as the movie unfolds.
Eddie Redmayne: film takes place over 2 days, so it's a short period, and I love that. But these four people find themselves unexpectedly thrown together and they really are kind of very different people – two sisters and the muggle – which is Jacob – and then myself, and this is not a natural fit at all.
Katherine Waterston: Tina's a recently demoted witch. I don't think I can tell you why she was demoted but obviously, as it would do to just about anyone, her confidence isn't at an all-time high at the moment, at least not when we first meet her at the beginning of the film.
Colleen Atwood, costume designer: Tina is a very smart kind of person, very nerdy, not thinking about clothes. She’s also at the same time, very modern – she’s the only character other than Seraphina [Picquery, the President of the MACUSA, the American Ministry of Magic] who is ever in trousers as a woman.
She’s definitely not thoughtful about the process – she’s an eccentric person. Her clothes are a little bit messy always and a little bit off kilter, but they’re solid clothes and she pretty much wears the same thing the whole movie.
Katherine Waterston: Tina has a sister who she lives with, Queenie, who is a very different woman. And they're very close. She's sharp, she's her own worst enemy at the beginning of the film when you meet her, because she's got good instincts, she's just not trusting them.
Her relationship with Newt? I think if you're peculiar, it's nice to meet other peculiar people. Whether it's romantic or not, it's lonely when you feel like you're the only peculiar person out there. I think Newt and Tina are both kinda offbeat and have a lot of qualities that have often been attributed to geeks. I don't really think of them as geeks, just a little bit unusual.
I'm a weakling so I feel like the role is really physically demanding, but I don't know if a normal person who has muscles would feel the same way. But I had this wand duel last week and the next day I have what I can only describe as Wand Elbow – it's like Tennis Elbow, you know? This aching, miserable feeling in my elbow. And I was just completely broken.
David Yates, director: Newt gets a buddy in this film, played by Dan Fogler, so he has a mate, and there’s a sort of bromance that goes on.
Dan Fogler: My character is a baker. He very much wants to be a baker and have a bakery – it’s in his blood. He’s just fresh back from World War I – he’s like, the last guy back from World War I.
He’s extremely loyal, and he’s the kind of guy you give him an order, he gets it done no matter how ridiculous or crazy it sounds. He comes back home to New York to get a loan to open up a bakery.
He’s got this case full of all of these delicious pastries that he’s made and he bumps into Newt who has a very similar case filled with creatures… a giant zoo of magical creatures.
And they swap, and later on I’m down on my luck and I’m like ‘all I want is just one of my Danish’s’ and I open up the case and release all the creatures out into Manhattan and we spend the rest of the movie trying to track them down.
David Yates, director: Dan Fogler plays Jacob and he’s Newt’s buddy in this movie. He’s the only non-wizard in this story, and he’s a real presence. He’s very funny and he can be very moving at the same time. He’s a real comedian.
Dan Fogler: Jacob’s a very likeable guy and very sociable and he knows the New York streets and he’s definitely on the other side of the spectrum to Newt.
Newt is very cerebral, he’s like the Charles Darwin of magical creatures and I’m just this guy from New York that wants to open a bakery, you know? That’s it, he’s just a really loveable, likeable guy and the two of them kind of balance each other. It’s like a Sherlock and Watson situation.
Alison Sudol: Queenie is just the most wonderful, playful, empathetic, kind, funny, fun human being ever.
She’s a delight to play, she is horribly bored in her dead-end office job and so when the possibility of an adventure comes up, basically it’s the best thing that’s ever happened. Even when things are scary or difficult or whatever, she is just thrilled by the fact that she’s not doing whatever it is that she does in the office
Queenie is able to read minds. Everybody else is just traditionally more about wand magic, but Queenie’s magic is just inside her. It’s much more about her understanding of human beings and her ability to tune in that she leans on more than traditional spells, which I think is quite different for this world.
There’s this wonderful simplicity to Queenie’s presence. Not simple in a bad way, more that she’s very pure and very present and very herself.
David Yates, director: The reason I went with Alison for Queenie is that she’s a really pure spirit – she’s very funny, she’s utterly charming.
I saw hundreds of auditions of really experienced actresses and not-so-experienced actresses being that character. It’s a really difficult character to pull off and she does it beautifully. There’s a real purity and innocence.
Alison Sudol: She doesn’t dress or look like anybody else in the film – she’s just her own thing. She just has a very particular way of putting herself together, and it’s not over the top – she’s not overboard, she’s not being showy.
Coleen Atwood, costume designer: Queenie is like, lighter than air so she’s sort of a kind of bubbly character so her costumes are light. They’re pale colours, they reflect that sort of energy that she has.
Alison Sudol: But she’s incredibly feminine and there’s a real delicacy to the way that she dresses. She just enjoys being a girl, which I find really wonderful because I grew up feeling like you had to choose between being nice and having friends or being smart or being pretty – there was no duality. She’s just like, ‘I’m a girl and I like to be a girl and I can be kind and I can be young and I can also be angry if I need to’. She’s just all of the things that women are and she dresses like that and it’s fabulous.

The Man Upstairs (1958)
"Miss Grey! You keep saying that you're to blame, that you want to help! Well now's your chance, do you want to help or don't you?"
"Yes, of course I want -"
"Well, then tell them the story yourself, it will help them to understand better."
#the man upstairs#1958#british cinema#alun falconer#robert dunbar#don chaffey#richard attenborough#bernard lee#donald houston#dorothy alison#virginia maskell#kenneth griffith#patricia jessel#alfred burke#charles houston#maureen connell#amy dalby#walter hudd#edward judd#patrick jordan#within its own specific context (as one of the glut of cheapy brit thrillers that were produced in the late 50s and early 60s by budget#filmmakers) this is something close to a masterpiece. shot in a naturalistic style without music‚ dissolves‚ and unfolding in real time#we follow Attenborough's troubled lodger as one sleepless night and an incidental reaction snowballs so out of control that by the end of#the film literally even the army have become involved. it's a fascinating study of a situation spiralling way beyond the control of any of#the parties involved‚ but it's just as notable for its sharply critical view of the police approach to handling a case involving a mental#health crisis (something that still feels horribly relevant some 65 years later). Bernard Lee is repugnant as the aggressive police#inspector who seems dead set on escalating events and cares nothing for Attenborough's vulnerable stranger; Dickie himself is astonishing#but takes a back seat for the second half as the film moves to concentrate on his fellow lodgers (a narrow array that might be meant to#represent society as a whole‚ one of the only parts of the film that doesn't quite work). a surfeit of great brit character actors all pull#their weight‚ but it's Australian Dot Alison who shines out as the tentative voice of kindness and understanding
