"We've been planning this for months now, everyone knows where they're going and what they're doing. Don't forget, if things look suspicious, say the codeword through our private comm line and we'll retreat back here. Any questions?"

The Azerulans were far less humanoid than you'd been told, each alien bearing two extra arms and glowing multi-coloured eyes. They sported a variety of different skin colours and wore minimal clothing. They were also incredibly tall, the shortest in your immediate sight measuring a good seven feet.

Taking a deep breath, you locked down your ship and activated the theft alarms. Then you set out, your crew falling in behind you as you exited the hangar bay and entered the city.

Your senses were immediately assailed with bright flashing lights and an overwhelming mix of smells that made your eyes water. This had not been at all what you were expecting of the calm-looking blue planet, and it caught you off guard slightly.

Recovering quickly, you turned and spoke to the others in a low voice.

"This place is far busier than we were planning for, so make sure you stay with your partner at all times. We can't afford for anyone to get lost, especially if we have to make a hasty retreat. Got it?"

Everyone nodded and you smiled. "Now, let's get this show on the road!"

After a good half-mile trek through the massive city, you reached your destination: a bar named Star 1117. Taking a deep breath, you pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The bar was surprisingly empty for this hour of the evening, you'd thought the place would be bustling. Perhaps your client was rich enough to buy the place out for the night and keep your transaction completely private.

"My apologies." You and Soobin bowed smoothly in greeting. "There was quite a line at the security gate."

JK chuckled. "Understandable. Azerulas is approaching peak tourist season, so traffic is picking up. Now, do you have what I asked for?"

You nodded. "I do. My crew has it ready to bring in as soon as I see you've brought the money."

"Pretty AND smart! I'm looking forward to doing more business with you."

JK motioned to one of the men behind him who stepped forward and opened the digipak on the table. The pak's holoscreen lit up, showing that it did indeed hold the promised three thousand credits.

"Satisfied?" JK asked, running a hand through his vivid purple hair.

You smiled. "I am." Tapping the watch on your wrist, you opened the private comm line and called for Yeonjun and Huening Kai to bring the package.

A few moments later the duo arrived, a large steel crate swinging between them.

"Two shock guns, a dozen untraceable bombs, and a sniper laser gun. It's all here, just as you requested."

"Very good. You've given me such good service, I almost hate to do this…." JK's voice trailed off as a metal door slid down in front of him.

Before any of you could even think of moving, an explosion sounded immediately in front of you, followed by another to your left, a third to your right, and a fourth from behind you. Heat blossomed everywhere, rapidly filling the room with fire, and you dazedly felt yourself fall to the concrete. Your ears rang as the flames steadily grew, and smoke began to gather in your lungs. You coughed dryly, trying to find your crew as you felt your consciousness begin to fade. You saw Soobin and Yeonjun lying together in a heap, with an arm sticking out from beneath them that you desperately hoped belonged to Huening Kai. Spots danced before your eyes, blending together into a dark curtain that shrouded your vision as you passed out.

You were brought back to wakefulness by a hand pressing gently against your forehead. Your eyes slowly fluttered open, vision blurry until you blinked a few times. You were greeted by the startling sight of an Azerulan male’s face mere inches from your own and jerked back slightly, a hoarse cry scraping your raw throat. The male looked at you apologetically, leaning back to give you space.

“Wh-Where am I?” You asked, afraid that the alien was an associate of JK. “Where’s my crew?”

"They are safe. Do not worry, my friends are tending them as we speak." The Azerulan smiled and continued. "My name is Yunho. My friends and I saw you go in before the explosions, so when they went off and none of you had come back out we grew concerned and ran to see if you needed assistance."

Gratitude filled you as you smiled back at him. "Thank you Yunho. My name is Y/N, and it seems my crew and I owe our lives to you and your friends."

Yunho stood from his seat, all four hands raised in protest. "Nonsense, we were simply doing what any respectable citizens would do. Though I will say, it's not every day I get to rescue a pretty little human."

You blushed, not used to such compliments. Yunho excused himself to go see how his friends were faring with your crew, leaving you alone to process the recent chain of events.

It was clear now JK had set you up from the start, probably itching to get his hands on the bounties for the six of you. This was mainly due to the fact that the government could never catch you no matter how hard they tried, and so the rewards for proof of your death had skyrocketed the longer you evaded capture.

Unbidden, your thoughts suddenly turned to Yunho, and you wondered if his friends were as attractive as he was. You'd be lying if you said you hadn't fleetingly considered jumping his bones once you got over your initial shock of seeing him.

At six feet tall Yunho was the shortest Azerulan you'd seen so far, but he was by far the best looking in your opinion. His skin was a rich forest green with lighter green undertones and hints of brown in shadowed places. His eyes were a mix of blue and yellow with slit pupils and he wore only a long moss-green loincloth, leaving his sculpted torso bare. Elegant gold tattoos sprawled across his chest, arms and legs; an indicator that he held a fairly high position in Azerulas' society.

You shook your head, trying to clear it of the not-so-innocent thoughts floating through it. Yunho had saved you and your crew from death, tended your injuries and given you a place to stay. It would be incredibly inappropriate to repay those kindnesses by trying to get with him. Besides, he probably already had a girlfriend. There was no way a hottie like him was still single.

The next day Yeonjun and Huening Kai both woke up, and you were able to go visit them. That same morning Taehyun and Beomgyu had run into one of Yunho's friends and were brought back to the place you were staying. You were beyond thrilled to see them, relieved that they'd been unharmed. It was during reunion visit that Yunho came to inform you what was going on in the aftermath of the explosions.

JK had slipped from the burning building unseen, then went around telling everyone he'd dispatched the most infamous pirates. He'd even somehow managed to come up with some convincing photographic proof and ran off to some distant planet with the reward money.

You weren't quite sure how you felt, being presumed dead and all. None of you were actually, and it seemed Yunho could tell this, as he said the six of you could stay until you figured out what was next.

You never imagined you'd want to give up pirating so easily, but all of you had just been handed fresh starts on a golden platter and you would all be fools not to take them. So when Soobin woke up a few days later, you all sat down to figure out what to do.

Huening Kai had never gotten to fulfil his dream of going to college, so he decided that he'd like to finally go through with it. Beomgyu liked this idea as well, and said that he'd tag along.

Yeonjun and Soobin, who'd been dancing around their feelings for each other for an unbearably long time, finally decided to take the plunge and start dating. They weren't quite sure where they would go, but said they'd figure it out together.

Taehyun wanted to go back and visit his family, then travel to some of the places he'd always wanted to see.

As for you, you had no clue at all what you wanted to do with your life. You had no family to speak of, and no real ambitions that had been put on hold. Yunho, ever the gracious host, allowed you to continue staying even after the boys had all left.

In the silent days that followed, your initial attraction to Yunho grew stronger. And though you were no expert on alien behaviours, you started seeing some signs that maybe he was starting to feel something for you too.

Jolting awake you bolted into a sitting position, eyes darting about wildly. Where were you? What had happened to Yunho? Why were you in a library?

Then reality came rushing back and the fear left your body. Seonghwa had spoken rightly when he said you would forget what was real the deeper you went. Even now, a part of you wanted to dive right back into the book and find Yunho.

Shaking your head, you lifted the key that had appeared in your palm. It was gold, decorated with deep green emeralds. It joined the first two and you stood, catching your breath as you pondered your next move.

Perhaps it would be best to get the worst over with before you were fully sucked into the false realities. Yes, you decided, the Horror section would be next.

YESSSSSS MY GIRLSSSSS OKAY RAMBLE FOR ALL INCOMING

Kala is introduced to Maeverse super early on! In it’s hypothetical season two, she ends up on earth and be friends the turtles for a little mini arc, being one of their first exposures to the larger scale of the worldbuilding. Like in 87, her home in Dimension X is overrun by war and constant fighting that she just can’t stand, so when she’s on earth she gets practically addicted to the feeling of freedom and never wants to leave, especially when her and Mikey really hit it off due to her bubbly and fun loving personality. Eventually though, Dask and Zak show up and beg Kala for her help in the rebellion, and when faced with the fact her home is being destroyed while she’s out here enjoying herself, she reluctantly but determinedly leaves. She doesn’t appear again for a while, until Mikey meets her again when he ends up in Dimension X and discovers the full extent of what the Krang have been doing to Kalas home.

Oh, also Kala, Shini and Renet start a girl band-

Next is Mona Lisa! She’s a human turned axolotl mutant, who was abducted one day by Captain Filch (who in this is a space pirate!) and even though she escapes, she stays in space both to put a stop to him and because, well. Out in space she knows she fits in with every other alien now. She’s scared of returning home, because she knows she won’t be able to get her own life back and she doesn’t want to face the potential rejection from her family at the sight of her as a mutant. It’s only after she meets Raphael and Filch is defeated that she eventually gets the courage to return to her planet. Outside of that though, she’s very much a trickster who loves making one liners, with a passion for science. Her and Raphael share a love for standing up and fighting against people in power doing the wrong thing, but she likes to take the long con, planned out route in contrast to Raphael just storming into things pfft

And then finally! Lotus! Lotus is very new to Maeverse in comparison to Kala and Mona, so I don’t have tooooo much for her yet, but I already adore her inclusion to the worlds character roster AHA

Her backstory as of now is very, mysterious, in the sense that none of the characters really know anything about her, but she’ll always appear in episodes whenever the turtles least expect her. If they travel to a new location, there’s a 60% chance Lotus is already there. I posted her first sketch sheet a bit ago, but in that I basically said that the rule for her character is that she can be literally anywhere a plot is happening, it just needs to make sense that she could be hired by someone to get there. She’s not really an antagonist, it’s more of a playful “fancy seeing you here!” situation where her goals will either align with the turtles or clash, she’s not a bad person by any means and honestly has no hard feelings towards the turtles, she just makes it very clear she always prioritise her job.

Also yeah I just find the idea of them always randomly encountering her really funny-

AvP, a female predator named Tia'ra and a male human named Max are trapped on a prison planet with many other humans and aliens. As they try to find a way to escape, as well as fall in love, they meet a Xenomorph whose been experimented on and given human speech and thought, a little girl whose been wrongfully taken there, a woman and her pet Xenomorph, (note, this is my character Violet and Xander from my story, the Android and The Mutant), and a male cyborg, the group find out about a plot that threatens to destroy the universe. 4. OFF, Batter x Queen AU. The Judge sends a regretful Batter to a time before Hugo lead his world to ruin, and thus, starts to form a relationship with the Queen. 5. A continuation of my story, UnderFell Mob. In this, Frisk is now an adult, working with her monster family to maintain peace. Soon, a new menace rears its head to threaten Frisk and those she cares about. 6. Godzilla Apocalypse Story involving OCs, humans and monsters from Godzilla, Gamera, Mothra and King Kong movies. When the world is turned into a wasteland, it's up to a small group of humans to try and create peace between the monsters and themselves. When Ling Ghidorah threatens the last of humanity, it may be up to a certain radioactive creature to maintain peace. 7. Invader Zim X Gaz AU, if this one wins, or if I ever decide to do it in the future, I might do another poll on where you'd want the setting for this AU to be. 8. Tom, Toonamis glorious host, is sent on a Sci-Fi adventure that will have him meet several faces. And they're all his own! (Basically, our current Tom ends up stranded on a desert planet with a new larger, more mobile version of SARA, Georgia the worm, and Clyde 56s, and they end up finding the factory that built Tom, and in doing so, they find the previous models of Tom, but discover that they have their own personalities!) 9. An OC ends up on a cosmic adventure with Quenn Tyr'ahnee, (aka: The Martian Queen on Duck Dodgers). On their journey, the two fall in love as they are chased down by a group of space pirates, (who may or may not look like classic Looney Tunes villains). 10. Years into the future, the Teen Titans, (comic versions mostly), are now lead by a new generation. The son of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle, the daughter of Dick Grayson and Starfire, the daughter of Raven and Garfield Logan, an ageing Victor Stone, the grandson of Slade Wilson, and an orphaned monster find themsleves coming together to carry on the legacy of the Titans before them... 11. A crossover between Super Mario Odyssey, and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In the story, set in an AU, A weakened Ganon creates a spell that merges his world with the one housing a certain Italian plumber. When he forms a shakey alliance with Bowser, it's up to 2 heroes to save the day. A plumber with his talking cap, and the Hero with the sword that seals the darkness must save their world's from the Koopa King, and the Demon Lord... 12. Who loves Smash Bros? I Do! So I thoight, why not make it into an actual story? Keep In mind, due to so many characters In the games, and several games at that, I made it a more simple plot by making my own that's loosely based on the first game. I will have various characters from certain games In it though. Some as heroes, some as villains, and some as side characters. In my story, a dimensional rift created by Master Hand brings various worlds together. This includes the Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, Link, Fox Mccloud, Samus Aron, Solid Snake, Megaman, Kirby, Red and his pokemon, Ness, Lucas, Donkey Kong, Pit, (aka Kid Iccarus), and Captain Falcon. Characters such as Bayonetta, Lucas, Banjo Kazooie, various Princesses, the Wario Bros, (Yes, I'm putting Waluigi in there), will be forced to hold up together while our heroes work to stop Master Hand and his minions. 13. Mad Marvel. A Mad Max style universe involving various Marvel characters. For my main leads, Spiderman with his Karen AI, She-Hulk, (note that I'm toying with the idea of Spider-Man and she hulk as a couple for this story) Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Wasp, and Thor. The villains would be an immortal Joe version of Thanos, Hela, Magneto, Red Skull, MODOK, Dr. Doom and Abomination. Other characters like the X-Men, Deadpool, the Hulk, and other Avengers would pop up in other groups. The main one is the characters I listed. 14. Spiderman: Great Power. A very loose adaptation of the PS4 game. It has variations, like the action, and certain changes to the story. Such as Peter having his AI Karen and his drone from SM: Homecoming, Peter is in a relationship with She Hulk, he is friends with the Avengers, and side characters like Ned being involved on the side lines. 15. A Ben 10/ Fallout harem romance story. It loosely follows the combined plots of Fallout 3 and 4. An alternate Ben's universe is destroyed by a black hole, and so Paradox, feeling bad for him, sends him to an alternate dimension where he was unknowingly killed by an insane pyronite. Ben is brought to a fallout style dimension where various alien species have come to the Earth before and after the nukes turned it into a wasteland. As Ben works to save this world from being torn apart, he also finds himself in a harem style relationship with various woman from the series. Influenced by the story, "Ben's Harem", by GreyKing46. 16. A Smash Bros AU. In this story, Samus Aran is the captain of a group of space mercs. This team consists of Aran, Sonic from Mobius, a Pikachu tested in in a lab, a baby Metroid, Link as a Luke Skywalker type character as boy coming from a backwater planet, Mario as a space mechanic, Fox Mccloud, a cyborg version of Snake, Megaman and and Kirby as a mysterious space outlaw. 17. A fantasy story maybe? When a feared yet gentle barbarian is taken hostage by a tribe of ogres, he is soon thrown into an adventure involving high stakes danger, and romance. He soon finds himself in a relationship with several females! Yeah, trying to delve into harem style storytelling. He finds himself with an orc warrior, a runaway dwarf princess, a human thief, an enslaved centaur, a flirtatious elf, a hard headed goblin and a shy nymph. 18. A simple romance story where Peter Parker, Spider-Man, and Jennifer Walters, She-Hulk, become a couple, fighting against various enemies as members of the Avengers.

PROLOGUE

“On the clearest of nights, when the winds of the Etherium were calm and peaceful, the great merchant ships with their cargos of Arcturian sura crystals felt safe and secure.” A large, bright wooden ship sailed through open space, drifting through golden clouds. A deep, dramatic male voice narrated its journey. “Little did they suspect that they were pursued by pirates.” A smaller ship with red sails followed behind, seemingly coming out of nowhere, led by an alien with sallow features, fangs, and bony hands. “And the most feared of all these pirates was the notorious Captain Nathaniel Flint.”

Virgil watched with rapt fascination as the book’s technology bent light into moving pictures, turning the story into a 3D movie in front of him. Pirates and merchant crew alike broke out into conflict, firing upon each other. The sounds of wood splintering and cacophonous shouting rang out, only slightly muffled by the fact that the scene was, in fact, a sort of illusion. Men fell from the ropes as they were shot, descending into nothingness as their forms surpassed the limits of the book’s projections. The six-year-old pulled the book closer, grinning as he laid on his stomach and his feet kicked idly behind him, the glow of the book the only light in his otherwise dark bedroom.

His room was a decent size, mainly wood, with the back wall made of plaster and stone seeing as it was one of the building’s outer walls. He had a small desk that he almost never used, cluttered with space maps and schoolwork, of course. A modest rug was pinned under his bed, a chest at the foot of said bed, and several shelves were anchored to the walls, holding many of his toys – mostly alien figurines; either pirates or superheroes or something of the like, though tonight Virgil’s attention was focused on the projection before him.

“Like a Candarian sap-wing overtaking its prey-”

The door suddenly opens, and Virgil’s feet still, heart stopping. His eyes widen as light from the hallway spills into his room, illuminating a strip of his bed.

“Virgil Alexander Shae!”

Virgil rushed to shut the book, the pictures disintegrating and the narration slowing to a stop as the book fell to the bedsheets. He put his chin in his hands, looking anywhere but his dad. Maybe if he played it cool, he wouldn’t be as mad. That’s totally worked before, right?

Thomas sighs, hands on his hips. “I thought you were asleep an hour ago.” Virgil sits up and shifts so he’s sitting against the headboard, pillow against his back. His dad walks into the room, pale blue pajamas hanging off of his broad frame slightly wrinkled and short brown hair a mess from a long day of running his fingers through it. He sat beside Virgil, giving him an expectant look.

“Dad,” Virgil whines, grabbing for the book again, “I was just getting to the best part!” He smiles up at him, hugging the book to his chest. “Please?”

His dad laughs and he perks up slightly. Maybe he’d let him finish after all?

“Goodness, not the puppy eyes, you know I can’t say no.” He continues to smile up at his dad. Thomas lets out a put-upon sigh, moving to sit beside his son. “Scoot over then, love.” Virgil’s smile widens as he does what the older male asks. Thomas sits beside Virgil and wraps an arm around him and Virgil opens the book, the picture of Nathaniel Flint’s ship still front and center on the page. The narrator’s voice warms up, starting out slow and warped as it picks up where it left off before the deep and enthralling tone resumes its tale.

“Like a Candarian sap-wing overtaking its prey, Flint and his band of renegades swooped in!” The voice exclaimed. The pirates’ ship jumps off the page, sailing through the air. Metal claws dug into the merchant ship, anchoring it to Flint’s. The pirates grabbed onto their ropes, swinging over the cavernous distance to land on the deck of the merchant ship. Smug cheers rang out from the group as they descended upon the merchant ship’s crew. Conflict rang out. Weapons fired. Crew from both sides fought tentacle, claw, foot, and gun trying to either take the ship or defend it. Deflected shots crashed into the ship’s wood, sending splinters into the air and starting a blaze in the wreckage. Smoke billowed into the starry sky, the fire’s glow illuminating the all-out war between crews.

Flint’s men made it down to the captain’s private quarters, locating his personal riches. A sword swung up into the air, only to be brought down upon the golden lock, severing it in two and mangling the metal of the chest’s clasp. The chest was tipped over onto the floor, gold and jewels spilling out only to be scooped up in bony hands. Nathaniel laughed darkly, stuffing the riches he held into coat pockets before directing his men to take the chest back to the ship.

“And then, gathering up their spoils,” Nathaniel’s ship sailed off into the stars, heading straight for Virgil’s illuminated face, “vanished,” the ship glowed green before utterly disappearing from the page, and Virgil flinched. That part always got him, no matter how many times he read this story, “without a trace.”

“Whoa.”

Virgil looks up at his dad as they both speak, amusement dancing in Thomas’ eyes. He turns back to the book, turning the page, and blue light washes over their faces, fog coming off the pages.

“Flint’s secret trove was never found, but stories have persisted that it remains hidden somewhere at the farthest reaches of the galaxy,” the fog moves as the picture zooms further into the dark depths of deep space, idle meteors drifting past until the silhouette of a planet pushes through the fog, “stowed with riches beyond imagination.” The planet looms closer, two rings bracketing it in an ‘X’ across its center, one of them a glowing, misty green. “The loot of a thousand worlds.”

Virgil grins, speaking in time with the narrator. “Treasure Planet.”

His dad gently shuts the book with a fond smile. “Okay, time to go to bed, mister.” Virgil pouts. “Nope! None of that, you need to sleep.”

Virgil sighs. “Fiiiiiiine.” Thomas moves to get up, setting the book on his bedside table. Virgil scrambles up onto his headboard, standing shakily on top of it, his small feet just barely fitting. “How do you think Flint did it, dad? How’d he swoop in out of nowhere-” He jumped from his headboard onto his bed, his dad reaching out to catch him but being too slow. Virgil rolls onto his back, looking up at Thomas. “And vanished without a trace?”

“I have no idea.” His dad sighed and shrugged, moving closer to Virgil. “Now... Come here!” He snatches Virgil into his arms, laughing lightly as the boy struggled to get away through his own giggles. “I’m gonna get ya!” Thomas pulls Virgil’s shirt up over his stomach and blows a raspberry into the skin, making him shriek with laughter. He settles, smiling down at his son. “Alright. Time for you to go to sleep, my little spacer.” He moves to tuck him in, tapping the tip of his nose and kissing his forehead.

“You think someone will ever find Treasure Planet, dad?”

Thomas smiles sadly, brushing a hand through Virgil’s hair. “I think it’s more of a… legend. A myth. I don’t think it’s real.”

Virgil looks up at him, his expression a mix of confusion and disbelief. “I know it’s real!”

He sighs, smiling. “You win. It’s real.” He tucks Virgil in, kissing his forehead once again. Virgil smiles and closes his eyes.

“Nighty-night, dad.”

“Nighty-night, sweetheart.”

He gets up and leaves, closing the door behind him.

Virgil shuffles under his blanket and opens the book, its light bathing the small pocket of space he occupies and lighting his shadow. “There are nights when the winds of the Etherium are so inviting in their promise of flight and freedom, made one’s spirits soar!”

Happy New Year, @jemmahearteyessimmons!!! For a second year in a row, I am your FitzSimmons Secret Santa!! I’m sorry I didn’t get this posted when I said I would, but I hope you enjoy it!!

Summary: Fitz and Jemma record an episode and then go out to celebrate Fitz's birthday with their friends.

Jemma entered the studio and smiled at the sight of her best friend sitting at their desk reviewing his script. “Fitz!” she cried cheerfully, “happy birthday!”

Fitz looked up and smiled at her. “Thanks! You’re coming to Hawkins’ Pub with the group tonight, right?”

“Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Jemma told him.

She sat down next to him and a comfortable silence fell as Fitz went back to reviewing his notes and Wendy came over to apply make-up. There was a map of Greenland and the Arctic on the desk in front of them. Jemma pulled out her own copy of the script and reviewed it quickly.

“Okay, are we ready?” the director asked, coming over to stand in front of the desk. Jemma and Fitz nodded and put their scripts away. The director moved behind the camera. “Three, two, one, action.”

“Today on Buzzfeed Unsolved,” Fitz began, “we’re looking into the miraculous discovery of Captain America. Captain America, also known as Steve Rogers, was born on the 4th of July, 1918-”

“Very patriotic,” Jemma commented.

“Very patriotic, indeed, Simmons,” Fitz said. “When World War II began, Steve Rogers joined the army as soon as he was able, serving first as an actor promoting war bonds, before finally joining the famous Howling Commandos, where he got to see a bit of action. Steve Rogers’ plane went down in the Arctic Ocean in 1945 and he was assumed dead. However, in July 2011, Steve Rogers was found, still alive. Now, we know the story we’ve been told, that Steve Rogers was given a super serum that made him into a real life superhero and that serum allowed him to survive in ice for nearly seventy years, but what exactly that serum was, was never released to the public. If there actually was some kind of magic potion that could change people the way it allegedly changed Steve Rogers, why haven’t more people recreated it and used it for themselves?”

“Others have tried,” Jemma said. “Bruce Banner, for one. And Peggy Carter wrote in her autobiography that the serum was deemed too dangerous to keep.”

“That’s assuming the serum is in fact the truth,” Fitz said.

“You have other theories?” Jemma asked.

“I do have other theories,” Fitz confirmed. “Three, to be exact.”

Jemma sighed. “All right, let’s hear them.”

“Theory one: This man claiming to be Steve Rogers, is not, in fact, the real Steve Rogers.”

“So, he’s like the Dread Pirate Roberts?”

“Yes,” Fitz agreed, “or maybe Anastasia.”

“So, you’re saying the real Steve Rogers is actually dead, and this man is an imposter.”

“Yes.”

“That’s depressing. And how is he faking the super strength? That’s not really something you can fake.”

“Maybe he has a punishing exercise routine?” Fitz suggested.

“I don’t buy this theory,” Jemma told him.

“Okay, then theory two: Cloning.”

“Like Dolly the sheep?”

“Yeah, like Dolly the sheep. What if Captain America did crash in the Arctic, but was rescued before he died? He knew the world would continue to need superheroes, so he had his rescuers take DNA samples, in order to be used for cloning purposes.”

“But why wait until 2011 to reveal this cloned Captain America?”

“Maybe the first attempts at cloning didn’t work out?” Fitz suggested. “Plus, they would have had to wait until the clone grew up and was the same age as the original.”

“Well, this theory is a bit more likely than the super serum, but I’m still not fully buying it.”

“Well, wait until you hear my third and final theory,” Fitz told her. He paused for dramatic effect. “Aliens!”

Jemma rolled her eyes. “Ugh, Fitz!”

“What if, when Captain America’s plane went down, aliens happened to be passing by Earth and decided they needed a superhero of their own?”

“Some kind of guardian of the galaxy?” Jemma asked sarcastically.

“Exactly! Captain America helped the aliens fight their battles, and then requested that they drop him off exactly where they found him.”

“Then how do you explain him not aging?”

Fitz shrugged. “Erm, they kept him in cryo-freeze when they didn’t need him?”

Jemma rolled her eyes again. “Look, as improbable as it sounds, I believe the initial theory that we were told about Captain America.”

“But you only believe it because Peggy Carter says it’s true.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“Because what if she only says it’s true because she was forced to say it’s true?”

“What?”

“I dunno, some Men in Black type agency feeds her this lie in order to cover up the alien abduction.”

“Ugh, Fitz!”

Fitz smiled at the camera. “You know what I believe; you know what Jemma believes; now, you lot will have to decide for yourselves about the truth behind Captain America’s miraculous discovery.”

“Cut!” the director called out. “That was good, guys. Jemma, maybe you could add a little more eye rolling? And Fitz, a bit of a longer pause before the alien theory. Okay, let’s go again, guys.”

They spent the next few hours re-shooting with different camera angles, new line additions, and various reactions. When they were finally done, Jemma was more than ready to relax at the pub with Fitz and their friends.

Some would call Hawkins’ Pub--with its 80’s theme--hipster, but Jemma preferred to think of it as charming. She and Fitz entered and immediately spotted their friend, Daisy Johnson, at the bar, flirting with the young, 20-something bartender who had a glorious mane of hair.

“Hey, guys,” Daisy said cheerfully when they approached her. “I was just telling Steve here all about your birthday, Fitz. He’s promised us some free drinks.”

“Happy birthday, dude,” Steve said, handing over a tray of shots.

“Cheers, mate,” Fitz told him as he picked up the tray.

Daisy led them to a large, round booth where Mack, Elena, Piper, and Prince were waiting. There was a chorus of greetings and “happy birthday”s as Fitz and Jemma slid in.

“Davis texted,” Piper announced. “Their babysitter fell through, so his wife is gonna stay home while he comes to celebrate.”

“They could’ve just brought the baby,” Hunter commented as he and Bobbi approached the booth. “That’s what we did.”

“We didn’t really have a choice,” Bobbi said, one hand rubbing her rather large, pregnant belly. “Get me a chair, Hunter; I won’t be able to fit in the booth.”

“Yes, dear,” Hunter said.

“So, what crazy theories did you record today?” Piper asked Fitz and Jemma once everyone had settled into the booth.

“Captain America was abducted by aliens to be a guardian of the galaxy,” Fitz told her and everyone at the table began to laugh.

“What if he’s some sort of programmable robot?” Elena suggested.

“Oh, that’s a good one!” Fitz said. “Maybe we could do another quick reshoot tomorrow?” he suggested to Jemma.

“Maybe,” Jemma said, “but we’re supposed to be filming about that little girl from Indiana that people claimed was telekinetic.”

“Telekinetic, that would be a cool superpower,” Hunter commented.

“Oooh, let’s go around and name your ideal superpower,” Daisy suggested. “I’ll go first! Um, well, telekinesis would be nice, or maybe super strength. What about you, Fitz?”

“Erm, the ability to talk to animals?” he suggested.

“Animals, or just monkeys?” Mack asked.

“Well, I’d mainly use it to talk to monkeys,” Fitz admitted.

“You could have a monkey sidekick!” Daisy suggested.

“Yeah!” Fitz grinned at the idea. “He could help me get through laser fences with his adorable little hands.” He turned to Jemma. “What superpower do you want, Simmons?”

Jemma thought, one hand tapping her chin. “Oh, I know! The ability to breathe in places where humans typically can’t, such as underwater, or in outer space.”

Mack chose the ability to know if someone was a robot or not, Elena chose super speed, Hunter chose X-ray vision or invisibility, Bobbi chose healing powers, Prince chose teleportation, Piper chose flight, and Davis, when he arrived, chose the ability to see the future. Fitz and Davis then got into a discussion/argument over the possibility of being able to change the future.

Jemma smiled as she listened to their friendly bickering, chiming in occasionally to help Fitz prove his point about spacetime. She really did have the best friends. Her mind drifted toward Steve Rogers. If he really was a man out of time, like they’d all been told, and not some sort of clone or alien, then all of his friends were dead. How sad.

She was quiet as she and Fitz walked back to her apartment, her mind still on Captain America and everything he had lost. They stopped outside her door, and Jemma fidgeted with her key.

“Fitz,” she said, and he turned to look at her with an expectant smile. “I’ve been thinking a lot about how much Steve Rogers lost, being frozen for nearly 70 years, and I just want you to know--you’re my best friend in the world, Fitz.”

Fitz smiled. “I love you, too, Jemma.”

Jemma kissed his cheek. “Happy birthday, Fitz.”
