Beloved show tunes will get a fresh perspective when Broadway Backwardsreturns with gender-reversed and star-studded twists on classic and modern favorites.
The evening features performances from stars of stage and screen with men singing songs originally intended for women, and vice versa. Artists will honor the great songs of musical theatre while celebrating the LGBTQ community and creating an environment of equality, awareness and love.
The one-night-only event will include performances by Clyde Alves, Tony winner Len Cariou, Lilli Cooper, Tony winner Gavin Creel, Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Darren Criss, Tony nominee Ariana DeBose, Lea DeLaria, Nathan Lee Graham, Tony winner Rosemary Harris, Robyn Hurder, Tony nominee Christopher Jackson, Caitlin Kinnunen, Caissie Levy, Isabelle McCalla, Tony winner Donna McKechnie, Bonnie Milligan. two-time Emmy Award and Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth, Nicole Vanessa Ortiz, two-time Tony nominee Andrew Rannells, Tony winner Alice Ripley, Alexandra Silber, Tony nominee Jarrod Spector, Academy Award, Tony nominee Kathleen Turner, Ana Villafañe and Teal Wicks, plus the Grammy Award-nominated Broadway Inspirational Voices. Performers are subject to change.
Broadway Backwards will be hosted by Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella, who is currently inspiring Broadway audiences eight times a week as pilot Beverley Bass in the hit musical Come From Away. Colella’s accomplished career on Broadway also includes roles in If/Then, Chaplin, High Fidelity and Urban Cowboy.
Broadway Backwards is produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and benefits Broadway Cares and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City. Colella is a longtime friend of Broadway Cares and The Center and a passionate advocate for and member of the LGBTQ community.
Creator Robert Bartley will return to direct the show. He will be joined by Mary-Mitchell Campbell as music supervisor and Ted Arthur and Christopher D. Littlefield as music directors, with Jeff Brancato as production stage manager. The show will be choreographed by Bartley and Robbie Roby, with additional musical numbers staged by Paul McGill, Mimi Quillin, Stephen Reed and Tony Yazbeck.
What began as a small, grassroots concert performed at The Center in 2006 quickly grew into a highly anticipated event presented in Broadway’s best theatres. In its 13 editions, Broadway Backwards has raised more than $4.1 million for Broadway Cares and The Center.

Alice Ripley is an American actor, singer, songwriter, and blended media artist acknowledged for her diverse roles on Broadway in musicals, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal (2009 Tony Award, Best Actress in a Musical) and Side Show (one particular998 Tony nomination). She is currently performing in Paula Vogel’s play, A Civil War Christmas. She has way too prepared and designed albums with her band, RIPLEY.
RIPLEY’s clean single, “Beautiful Eyes”, was released on February 21, 2012 and the accompanying music video on April 17, 2012. On February 15, 2011, co-producer Sh-K-Boom Records released Alice Ripley Daily Practice, Volume 1, a stripped-down collection of acoustic rock covers with Ripley accompanying herself on guitar. Ripley stars opposite Kathleen Chalfant in the upcoming feature, Isn’t It Delicious?, by Aquapio Films.
