We crack open a new Warlord Games Mystery Box! #warlordgames #boltaction #blackpowder #hailcaesar
Earlier this year, Warlord Games’ mystery boxes were back for about $120. Boxes include a selection of miniatures, books, sprues, and accessories from the publisher’s various games. Each box brings a solid amount of savings, but is it worth the price? Beyond the Gates of Antares – Algoryn AI Squad – $34.50 Konflict 47 – US Tesla Anti-tank Gun – $56 Black Powder – Chosen Men – British 95th…

Algoryn! Got these for Xmas at least a year ago and was going to paint them differently to the small amount I already had. But when it came time to finish them off I ended somewhere in between with a more metallic version of my original. Also Command and Medic teams are set apart with separate colours #beyondthegatesofantares #warlordgames #algoryn #antares https://www.instagram.com/p/B3q937vHdyr/?igshid=z7va7hx13zdb

Birthdays are great for picking up extra models, and with that in mind I asked for some extra Beyond the Gates of Antares models and happily walked away with an Algoryn Starter Army! This Attack Skimmer is the first assembled from that box and it is a fantastic little kit. I was a little worried about the number of pour gates left on the model, but they cleaned up really easily and assembly was a breeze. I went ahead and magnetised the weapon options so I could tailor it for games and how many points I have available. -Askanidog

Three’s Company Part 2
It’s been a little while since the last update. February is a big month for Warmachine for me, but now it’s over, I can focus on Antares again!
We’re back with another Three’s Company article, where Dave, Matt and I discuss our new faction and how we’re getting along with them. Of course, only Dave has played any games with his faction so far, as he took Boromites in our beginners league.
We’ll start with Matt:
Matt: So my freeborn have finally arrived and just after I had a great weekend up visiting the guys at Warlord HQ, I got a few behind the scenes looks at the upcoming models and also got to watch Wojciech 3d sculpt the upcoming boromite hauler, all I will say is that it is nothing like the Starbug in the rulebook.
While I was at Warlord I also got given a gift of Hansa, Tovan and a C3M4, its like they knew I was starting a Freeborn force. Thanks again Charlie.
So having seen the upcoming stuff for freeborn i am definitely going to be sticking to my mainly feral theme to begin with. One to try out a different play style and two because I really like the models and conversion potential as well.
I built up my 500pt starting force and have primed them with a desert theme in mind. Will hopefully have test painted a couple miniatures very shortly. So approaching the build the ferals are all single piece metal miniatures so very simple there, the skyriders took a little bit of figuring out but again very simple once you realise where everything goes, the bikes themselves are 4 pieces, body, head and two wings. Whilst the riders all all two pieces, these did need filling with greenstuff as the cloaks left a reasonable gap. Finally we had the attack skimmer, which sadly due to a transmat incident and supply lines getting mixed I ended up with an Algoryn skimmer body, Warlord sorted this extremely quickly though(i had the correct body in 2 days) and I put this beautiful little beast together. I'm not one for magnetising so i have gone with the plasma light support on this one and will probably pick up another to give it the plasma cannon soon. Only thing I havent built yet is the C3M4 as i will not be needing it just yet. But from experience it is a lovely kit to put together.
Dave: Unfortunately life has been getting in the way of hobby since the first article but that is not to say there has been no progress at all.
I have basecoated a chunk of my force and got a paint scheme i am happy with i just need to find the time to roll it out to the whole force hopefully this will be done in the next few weeks.
And here is the first painted gangfighter it is close to the studio scheme in the end but i am happy with it . Games During the narrative league have been a mixed bag of success and failure. But each game i have changed my list significantly to try new units and ideas.
This has left me, I hope with a better idea of what i will use more often and what my lists will be when our gaming group makes the trip up to Tim’s Antares Boot Camp: The Shamasai Simulations, this trip should be a lot of fun for all involved. Impressions of the boromites after a few games, i have found the boromites high command stat is a great boon keeping them in the game far longer than I expected (in most cases) though a couple of games the dice have betrayed me leaving my units down and ineffectual.
The Lavamites are as good as people have claimed though do start struggling when whittled down in number, if nothing else they do absorb and awful lot of the enemies fire-power. I love vorpal charges but I have always been a fan of random and fun wargear in games so I am sure I will be using these a lot.
I still have a pile of terrain I ordered and a matriarch yet too build and a brood mother on her way so I will be hitting my painting and construction pile hard in the near future.
Aston: My Algoryn are starting to look good! At least in terms of bulking out the size of my army. With 3 AI squads, 2 X launchers and a medic team built, I’m pretty happy with my 500 point army. I’ve been base coating all my units in a lovely shade of green, but I’ve had trouble deciding on a colour scheme. Here is an early first attempt.
I wasn’t a fan. Too much green, your eyes just roll off him without picking up any detail. So I tried again! Unfortunately, I risked not scrubbing him down before hand, and now I have a very fairly chunky squad leader.
My new scheme incorporates white on the shoulder pads, kneecaps and gloves, and I’ve stuck to the traditional red mag guns, just to add some contrast.
Otherwise, I have plans to make 2 units of AI Assault squads using the base AI squads, but giving them “scythe blades” on their arms as a replacement for the D spinner, and I’m still considering how to incorporate a bulkier backpack.
That’s all for now. After the 18th and the Shamasai Simulations I’ll be giving the Ghar a break and focusing full time on the Algoryn! Stay tuned!

Felices partidas!!

Hobby Log #2
So I went down to my local game store to get some primer, and of course I couldn't just get primer, so I bought myself a sweet T-34/76 that I wanted super bad! And I have got to say, I love Warlord stuff, but this model has to have the highest ratio of work to satisfaction I've ever experienced, cause it took like twenty minutes to build and I'm so happy and it looks so cool.
Primed and ready to go! Besides that I've done some more work on Brunhilda and more writing for my RPG. I'm really hoping the guys enjoy it as much as I like making it.
After that there's my Algoryn, with work moving steadily along. Antares models are so cool! I was tempted to buy the big Antares starter today and the tank was the only thing that stopped me.
Let's see how much I can get done for next time! With Brunhilda mostly done I wanna focus on my Algoryn and get them all painted cause they're so darn cool looking and fun to paint.

All my Algoryn painted now! Sure they don’t match exactly and I have departed from the original, but the first 750 force was painted up super quick so I could start demo-ing the game when it first launched. I’ll just work out a story for the older models being a garrison and have since been reinforced by units with newer updated equipment. #warlordgames #beyondthegatesofantares #antares #algoryn https://www.instagram.com/p/B3tuv5DnXpS/?igshid=51i6pvy988p9

Three’s Company
Hello! Welcome to another ongoing article I’ll be covering every other week or so. Basically... three of us at our local shop have recently picked up a new faction. We’ll be documenting our trials and tribulations, thoughts and games on here for all you lovely people.
From left to right we have Dave, and his Boromites. Myself, with my new Algoryn, and Matt, with his hippy wusses, freeborn.
Army Choices
A: As some people might know, Matt and I have been eyeing up the new factions for a while, and unable to settle our differences like men, we took it to a public forum, like government. The long and short of it is that I now play Algoryn! Personally, I was happy either way, I love the skimmers, the avengers, the double micro x launchers... and especially the infiltrators!
D: When I first looked at beyond the gates of Antares it was the Boromites that first made me want to play I loved the sculpts and the background of the faction. The league and these articles have given me the excuse I needed to jump in and bring my own guild to the table.
M: Soooo where to begin, having had the chance to start playing much more GoA, I felt the need to consider getting another faction to go alongside my Isorians. Chatting to Aston who also wanted to get another faction we both decided on Freeborn or Algoryn. Like any adult decision we decided to put it to a public vote on facebook, first faction to 50 votes would be my new faction and Aston would get the other. Well I was actually quite surprised by the result...So here I now am looking at what to get for my new Freeborn faction.
First Thoughts
A: For me, the Kara nine set was a no brainer, 3 sprues of Algoryn, an A5 rulebook. ideal, shame I got the sprues and not the rulebook ;). It’s not a lot to go on, and it’s not a 500 point list, so I have some purchases to make! (after my Ghar are painted...) I love the algoryn’s weaponry and sleek, straight line approach to armour. So sexy.
D: Having played a few games with my concord to just get to grips with the rules I had a god idea of what I was working with when I looked at the Boromites list in the main rules book. Hardy troops, High command though the lack of spotter drones for every squad will take some getting use too.
M: I am going to start with the Freeborn Scout force 500pt army, I did this for my isorians as well and feel it really gives you a solid core to the force. Also Nick Simmerson said he designed this particular scout force so its his fault if it does badly (sorry Nick).
A solid core of 3 feral squads, weaker troops than what I am used to so adapting to that will be interesting, a Skyrider squad which i think look fantastic and again something that will be different than what I am used to and finally the attack skimmer another great looking model that i can't wait to ruin with my lack of painting skills.
What I quite like about this list is the lack of drones, not that I have a problem with drones but its just different not to have loads of them flying about.
Paint Schemes
A: I fully admit I have an addiction to grey. For as long as I can remember, my first faction has always been shaded grey + some other colour. Grey elves, Grey Retribution, Grey Ghar...
I’m breaking that with the Algoryn... I haven’t decided if I’m going purple or blue or green yet... I’m shopping around ;)
or maybe...
D: I have not put much thought into this area yet, though I have a good idea it will be an arid basing style to go with were the narrative league is set and I will be taking advantage of the idea that Boromites create distinct clan marking that all members share.
M: Paint scheme wise I am thinking of going with a Red scheme or possibly a Desert scheme. Didn't want to do blue as my Isorians are a dark blue now.
Future Purchases
A; Straight up, I’m heading for Infiltrators and a camo drone as plan A. Plan B includes a medic team and an x launcher. Basically a chance to play with everything I don’t have with Ghar. I don’t plan on jumping in and buying *everything* for this army... I want to build slowly... savour the moment. (hold me to that).
D: Currently I have no future plans as I bought both the scout force and the combat force which will keep me busy for the moment and has plenty of nice options to start out, though without a doubt the brood mother will be on my future purchase list as it is an amazing model.
M: Looking forward to future purchases, I will likely be waiting till march to see what plastic freeborn get released, also I will be adding a Nuhu Meld and I have some models i plan to use as misgenic rejects and last of the urgent purchases will be an x launcher to help pin those Ghar battle suits I always seem to face. My plan is to try out a force that is very different to what I am currently used to and I think the Freeborn give me the perfect force to do that with, so thank you Antares community. Hopefully you will follow all of our progress over the next few weeks and maybe get inspired to try something new or get into Antares for the first time.
Lists
A: Well... as I don’t have enough models for a list yet. I’ll hold off here!
D:
Overseer squad w/ Tractor maul
Gang Fighters
Work Gang w/ Reflex armour
Boromite support team launcher w/ Scoot and net
Boromite support team w/ mag light support
Total : 397 pts
Conclusions
Well that’s it, the glowing start of our new factions! Lots of possibilities... Lots of bloodshed. Keep reading! This will be a regular feature.

Army Thoughts 5 - Algoryn
And hot on the heels of the Boromites, we have everyone's favourite boys (and girls) in red. The Algoryn Prosperate!
With Kara Nine being released soon, now seems the perfect time to delve into this faction, and get an idea of what's going on. Plenty of people are starting to re-consider this faction as a second (or third... or fourth) army, given the new plastics. After the recent poll on the Facebook page, Algoryn were selected for my third army, so you can tell I put quite a bit of thought into this article! ;)
Brief Intro The Algoryn are not *quite* human. Not as different as the Ghar, but not quite as "human" as the C3. The Algoryn prosperate have been fighting for survival for hundreds of years, their arch enemies are the Ghar, and the Algoryn fight hard given the fact that any loss could mean the destruction of a planet. Their society is broken down into castes, honouring courage above all else and their centuries of war have forced them to adapt. Whilst the C3 and Isorians rely on drones, the Ghar on crude distort tech weaponry, the Algoryn use a fair few manned vehicles, and men and women are considered equal in terms of taking up arms. All in all, I get the feeling of a brave and ancient culture, fighting hard to keep the barbarians from the gate. The Algoryn have it rough, facing IMTel integration from one side, Ghar destruction from the other.
Army Playstyle The Algoryn are interesting, their standard troops don't usually have the flexibility of the C3, due to having Mag Guns rather than Carbines, but they each serve a rather distinct purpose, and they do it well. Algoryn can put on the pressure early with things like X launchers and infiltrator squads, and following it up with deadly assault troops and skimmers. Expect lots of blasts from their AI squads (armoured infantry, not artificial intelligence) with double micro x launchers!.
Their units seem relatively cheap when compared to the other armies base options, giving you quite a bit of flexibility in customising your army!
Unit Breakdown Tactical Algoryn have 5 tactical choices
AI Command Squad
The three man command squad every faction has, boasting a great command stat, the follow rule and the ability to reroll 2 RES tests. At just about 100 points, each man armed with plasma carbines, they're a nifty squad that will see a lot of options. You can give them a few more men, or a spotter drone, or a medi drone, making them and other nearby squads even more durable. The commander comes armed with an x sling too, and for a few extra points you can tack on slingnet ammo for extra pins, or overload ammo, for when you need to penetrate that drone armour. You might not be reaching for these at small points games, but they're solid.
AI Squad
Your usual 5 man band, at under 100 points, they're cheap and come withman x sling and a micro x launcher as standard! On top of that you can swap out any of their mag guns for a mag repeater or another micro x launcher for free. 2 OH templates is gold, just remember to add a spotter drone for LoS purposes. Upgrading the leader to have a mag gun or a mag repeater is probably worth while, just so he's of use at range. Otherwise, like most Algoryn squads, you can tack on slingnet or overload ammo. If you want the full boat of 8 troopers, with 2 micro X launchers with overload ammo and a spotter drone, plasma grenades etc, you're looking at around 180 points.
AI Assault Command Squad Required if you want more than 1 Assault squad in your lists. They're marginally more expensive than the standard command squad, and they come with Distort spinners, making them quite effective in melee too. They can be topped up with spotter drones or medi drones, or give the leader slingnet or overload ammo. Again, solid, but expensive. I'd pick the standard command squad over these guys unless you wanted more assault squads.
AI Assault squad
1/3 more expensive than the standard AI squad, they all come armed with mag repeaters, meaning you're pumping out 10 shots a turn with ease. Close under a hail of fire, then charge with the distort spinners, a squad of these could probably take out a vehicle without too much hassle. You can give them a homer drone, which whilst not always useful, in certain scenarios can be really worth while.
AI Infiltration Squad
Around the same cost as an assault squad, this 5 model squad comes aremed with mag repeaters and a free spotter drone. Their infiltration special rule lets them get up the table very quickly early on, great for getting into a building ready to ambush or homing in on an early objective. They can be given a camo drone, which means if they're down (or react to go down) shooting them becomes a futile exercise. This is usually a psychological bonus, you're opponent won't want to shoot them until they've activated, simply because they could go down. You can give them solar charges... Super grenades which are going to shred anything.
Support Algoryn have 5 supoort options
AI Intruder Skimmer Command Squad
Required to take more than 1 skimmer squad, these cost just under 200 points for 3 mounted troopers. They're fast, meaning they move pretty damn quick! They're armed with twin mag repeaters, allowing the three of them to put out 12 shots a turn, or they have carbines for when you need them. A compactor drone gives you a way of deploying a support weapon in a decent position early in the game.
AI Intruder Skimmer Squad
Just over 100 points again, 3 men, 12 shots a turn, they're a simple and effective unit comparable to a standard AI squad in terms of durability and output. There really isn't much to say about these, other than the fast rule means they can carry out hit and run attacks like nobody's business.
AI Support Team The standard support unit, at around 40 points, 50 with a spotter you can't go wrong. Where C3 get lots of plasma options, the Algoryn settle for mag weaponry. As standard it comes with an X launcher or a mag ligh. The x launcher, with the potential for all the amazing ammo that it can have, it's definitely worth picking up one or two. The mag light is a slightly weaker plasma light, SV2, decent range, 3 shots. Great if you want to lay down fire that will be killing infantry with ease. Otherwise, for a few extra points you can give them a mag cannon, which is the weapon of choice for taking out light and medium drones. Massive damage means that it's fairly unlikely that those pesky C3 drones will survive for a second round of shooting.
AI Specialist Team The big guns! With a plasma light support at standard, it's rarely worth double the price of a standard support team, instead you can give it a plasma cannon, which is great for killing Ghar, or a fractal cannon which slowly increases in SV every time it shoots (ish).
AI Avenger Attack Skimmer
This is where the algoryn get interesting! They probably have the easiest access to vehicles and MOD 2 outside of the Ghar, all for roughly 120 points, meaning you can fit it into 500 point games without much hassle. It comes armed with a mag light, but you can give it twin mags (i.e: the ability to wipe out a unit a turn) or a mag cannon for a few extra points. The real money is in its durability, for 160 points you can push it to RES 12 with a batter drone, meaning things are less likely to hit it, and you need some big guns (which are usually single fire and therefore more likely to miss compared to a hail of bullets) to take it down. Well worth taking your first action to go down simply to force your opponent to make bad choices.
Strategic Algoryn have 7 strategic choices, spoilt for choice!
AI Heavy Support Team
The support team's big brother, nearly 100 points gets you a mag heavy with an insane 5 shots a turn, but its a lot to pay for infantry shredding. Otherwise you can give it a mag mortar (if you need some high damage explosions) or an x howitzer (if you need long range explosions) or a heavy mag cannon (if you have a command crawler to kill). Giving it a batter drone gives it some much needed survivability.
AI Specialist Heavy Support Team
And the grandfather of the supports, it costs as much as the attack skimmer, just for the plasma bombard (which is not a bad thing), the plasma bombard will ruin the day of any enemy vehicle within its LoS, putting it on ambush can royally screw your opponent's plans.
Otherwise its a fractal bombard for a few extra points which gets stronger every time it hits. As with the heavy support, a batter drone and a spotter drone wouldn't be the worst option to tack on either.
AI Defiant Transport Skimmer The equivalent of the C3 transport drone. At 160 points you get a relatively durable mod 2 vehicle with a mag light. Honestly, unless you really need to get stuff up the table quickly, there are better vehicles. With only a single gun a lot of your other options can out-damage this, and the strategic slot is better used for something with a little more "table presence". That being said, a couple of shield drones, self repair and a batter drone give you a fairly strong battering ram to deliver a unit of assault troops to your enemies face.
AI Liberator Combat Skimmer - Hi Mag Comes armed with 2 mag lights and a spotter drone for 180 points! This is a nifty little vehicle can be upgraded to have a twin mag light support too, which increases your firepower by a third. Or you can just give it a mag cannon, and send it vehicle hunting itself. If you feel like it, 2 batter drones give this a fairly wide area to protect infantry on their way up the field, and shield drones to counter those anti tank shots. As a strategic choice it gives you a lot of durability at higher points levels, where people are taking more than 1 strategic choice.
AI Liberator Combat Skimmer - Plasma Destroyer
Same vehicle, different gun. Is the fact this comes armed with plasma lights rather than mag lights worth the extra 60 points? Maybe not, but you can swap one out for a Plasma Cannon for some highly mobile shredding power. As with the Hi mag option, batter drones and shield drones optional.
AI Liberator Combat Skimmer - X10 Special
Again, the same as the other two liberators, but with a mag light and a fractal cannon. With MOD 2 it can get some great use out of the fractal lock rule, but you can swap it out for a compression cannon for free. The key thing to remember for all three vehicles is that all of these weapons are light, letting you fire and move in the same turn. With an advance order that’s a lot of shots whilst advancing 10″. This one is the “just right” price range, half way between the plasma destroyer and the hi mag.
AI Bastion Heavy Combat Skimmer
In a 1,000 point game, this would be half your army almost. At its base cost it’s almost 400 points, but with a RES of 15, its easy to see why! When you’re investing this much in a model, you really want to take self-repair and a shield drone or a batter drone, pushing the cost above 400.
It comes with a mag light and a heavy mag as standard, the heavy mag is a heavy (duh) weapon, meaning it can’t fire it and move in the same order. To mitigate this you can upgrade the mag light to a twin mag, making it a force to be reckoned with even when it’s forced to move. Or you can pay an eye watering 30 points to change it to a plasma light support... I know where I rather spend my points (twin mags and a batter drone!).
Auxiliary
Algoryn have 3 choices for auxiliaries
Targeter Probe Shard
The standard auxiliary, base to base with the enemy for +1 Accuracy! It’s so simple. Many Algoryn weapons focus on OH blasts or rapid fire, so these will help mitigate some of the penalties. They’re also a bargain basement way of adding in an extra dice into the bag and just generally being a hassle for your opponent.
Scout Probe Shard
How do you make your opponent cry? Take a mag mortar or X howitzer and a scout shard. Why? Patching from almost anywhere on the board! Flitting freely around, into all those awkward places to give you line of sight to where you need to go. With lots of OH templates flying around, you can always find a good sue for these.
Medic Team
Going infantry heavy? Consider these guys. At 30 points you get rerolls, giving your algoryn a second chance at life. It’s a little costly, but you can give them mag repeaters to put out a few shots, or an extra medi drone for an additional reroll if you feel like it!

The Biggest Vote of the Decade: Matt v Aston
Anyone who frequents the Facebook page for Antares will have seen the recent poll that was put up. Both of us have 2 armies, Matt with his Isorians and C3, me with my Ghar of both garden and wild varieties.
The new plastic algoryn, and the fact that no one around us played freeborn enticed both of us, and unable to settle our differences like real men (with tiny small soldiers and lots of dice) we put it out to the masses.
In a typical “First past the post” democratic style, it was a first to 50, with both factions ending the day at a tie at 28. By lunchtime the next day both we still tied, but eventually, Freeborn won out, and Matt’s new faction was decided.
So instead of shopping around for funky misgenic rejects and ferals, I’m now eyeing up the Kara nine starter box and of course, the super skimmer support selection!
Over the coming weeks and months we’ll be stacking this blog to the rafters with our progress on our new factions, from our first baby steps to the dawn of a new empire! A civilization faction to stand the test of time.

Hobby Log #1
So I thought I'd start keeping a hobby log to keep me on top of my painting and modelling! I've just recently bought and ordered a number of Warlord Miniatures and I've been having a blast assembling and painting them. The impetus behind a lot of it was a desire to create an army that represents a homebrew sci-fantasy world I created a number of years ago; inspired by Nausicaa and Origin: Spirits of the Past, my friends played world war 2-esque soldiers in a fantastical world, stopping a dastardly group of bandits and using their trusty old mech to defeat a robot monster hellbent on eating them!
To that end I bought a box I've wanted forever: Soviet Infantry from Warlord Games' Bolt Action range, and what a blast it's been so far. The kit is lovely and the options make assembly a ton of fun. I also bought a KV-1/KV-2 tank from the same range and I fell in love. I love this tank! Let me show you how the old lady looks so far.
Yes, she is teal, and that's because she is a Capitol Union Army tank! My favourite thing about miniatures is that you can make them your own; they can be whoever or whatever you want. So Brunhilda is a lovely old teal tank ready to stick it to some evil robots in my upcoming RPG one-shot with the boys.
My other project was kinda unexpected, and that is a large number of models from Warlord Games' Beyond the Gates of Antares range. My local game store had a first come, first serve deal where buying an Antares starter set would get you $55 Canadian of free Antares models, so I bought their Strike on Kar'a Nine box and what I thought would be a fun little addition to my collection has actually got me hooked. I love the way the Algoryn models look and I'd like to show you one that I painted.
Now that I've got the other 14 base painted I can't wait to dance them up and get them all finished. Let's see how much I get done before the next hobby log!

Hobby Log #3
So I'm still painting! Which is great cause so often I get burnt out. I'm loving my Antares models and I finished painting the three squads of Algoryn Armoured Infantry that I got in that box, and I love them!
I've started basecoating that avenger attack skimmer in the back and I still need to do the support team and base the spotter drones, but otherwise I'm very proud. Not super fancy or anything, I'm not particularly good at painting, but super fun and satisfying. I love my hobby! After that I built a squad of soviet infantry and that was super fun cause warlord does great work.
I still have the T-34/76 to get started on, and also my sister loves the look of those concord in the picture so she might paint them and we might actually play! With miniatures painting and modelling is the real hobby for me but I'm still excited at the idea of my Algoryn walkin' and talkin'.
