A Court of Thorns and Roses - Fancast
Ok, so hear me out. I just finished A Court of Frost & Starlight and am in serious withdrawl. So, naturally, I started googling info about the casting of this movie and it appears that it's in the works. But as with every series I've ever loved, none of the picks are lining up with what I've got pictured in my head. So, I'm taking it upon myself to do my own casting! And LET ME TELL YA, I'm asuaging the withdrawls with this research.
First in the lineup...
Feyre.
If Pheobe Tonkin got some glacial gray contacts, we'd be in business. She is the epitome of strength that Feyre portrays. After seeing her in tvd and the originals, I can't help but totally picture her pulling off Feyre without a hitch. All archs of her character.
Elain.
Ok, so. Here's the thing. When you think sweet, blue eyes, and brown hair, do you not immediately picture Alexis Bledel out in the garden and doting on her crippled father? Cause, I DO! It took me a second to find a good pick for Elain, but I truly believe she'd match that energy very well! Throughout the whole storyline.
Nesta.
When you read about Nesta standing, stone-still, with rage in her eyes, do you not get Claire Holt vibes? Because, I most DEFINTIELY do. Then, I friggin' found this instagram photo of Claire Holt with brown hair and it all fell into place. Agree to disagree, maybe, but I am voting for this one fooooooooor sure.
Tamlin.
So, I saw all of the Hemsworth bros support, and I gotta say... not doing it for me. But Alexander Skarsgard? With LONG HAIR? 100%. Just, picture it. Him prowling around his estate, forcing Feyre to stay put, doing shady things for love? PLUS the STEAMY biting-of-the-neck part after the rite? Mhhhhm, perfect fit. If not, sorry not sorry, this is for sure a winner for me.
Lucien.
Ok, but why have I not seen this idea yet? I read like 50 dream cast threads, and none of them had Domhnall Gleeson for Lucien. And my only question is, why? Tell me you can't see him anxiously checking on Elain and loyally sticking with Tamlin through all of his bad decisions? And Under the Mountain, coming to Feyre's aid when he could? CONVINCE ME.
Rhysand.
The one I am the most iffy to post. But do me a favor, go to Google, search "Henry Cavill Immortals" and just scroll through that gloriousness. Now, clean him up a little, add a few years, and viola! Rhysand reincarnate. Yes, no? Maybe not. Honestly, the Rhys I have in my head isn't a human on this planet. At least not one that I know of. And I just can't with anymore Somerhalder ships. I mean, at least Cavill is 6'. A solid 3+ inches on good ole' Ian. Never hate, just... Rhys needs something different. And after the Witcher, I can totally see Henry giving Rhys a convincing go.
Azriel.
Not gonna lie, this is the one I'm the MOST excited about. I feel like Tyler Hoechlin got a bad beat in Teen Wolf, and since hasn't really had any good breaks. But being the silent, brooding, impossibly deep shadowsinger? SIGN ME UP! Nuff said.
Cassian.
Alright, alright, I know. I know. Emmett vibes, so strong. But like, just stick with me: Kellan Lutz with a messy man-knot. Plus he's got very big commander of the Illyrian army energy, does he not? It was HARD to find an actual actor, who I've seen and think could pull it off for Cassian. Plus, I hope after Twilight and Immortals he's honed in his skills for this sort of thing. *shrug*
Mor.
Honestly, the moment I saw this photo of Natalie Dormer it screamed Morrigan. For me, at least. Can't you just see her sitting at the Court of Nightmares, stone cold and fierce, but laughing and being doted on by her Illyrian buds? Just me? Maybe, but I'm standing strong with this one.
Amren.
This one was D I F F I C U L T. But, like, can't you see her with the silver stormy eye thing, saying "Careful, Girl." Cause, I can. That's all.
This is just the base cast. If this gets any love, I may follow up with a part 2 with the extended characters! Already have my sights set on Charlize Theron for Amarantha. I mean, take the White Queen and give her some crimson red hair, and that's Amarantha right there.
Tell me what ya think! Be kind, I'm proud of these, but also open to options. Creative ones ;-).

💘 + lottie & casper!!
where they first met and how
They first met back in high school!! Almost everyone around town knows the last name “Dupont'' because of how long the family has been there and with what they are associated but i’m guessing hadn’t put her face with the name until one day she caught him and his friends pranking her locker (you know that gilmore girls gifset where they are writing a phone number and then the dude says “write mine” when he sees Alexis bledel? well like that lol)
how long their ‘flirting’ phase was before feelings got involved
aksjasa Casper has been flirting with her since the moment he saw her and the boy hasn’t stopped even after all these years of rejection. She started to “flirt back” only some months before feelings get involved (her flirt back is calling him an idiot, sending him spicy pictures and then blocking him lol)
who fell for who first ( if applicable )
this one is easy, Casper ahahah. Boy has been wiped since he was a teen ahahaha
where their first date was and what it was like
first real date when they are like, officially dating? Casper took her out for dinner and some drinks to a small restaurant with a view to the beach where they would sometimes meet each other before dating, it’s small enough to keep it intimate but also casual. Second date he takes her to see his band play and honestly she goes 👀👀 Their first is a little weird at first, i mean they have known each other for years now and Lottie has a hard time being emotionally vulnerable, but she tries so things gets better once the food is on the table ahahaah
who asks who out and how ( with a sign? spelled out on a cake? just a simple ‘will you go out with me’? )
i think casper has asked lottie out in every way you can imagine, but one of the biggest was when he asked out for prom; he did this big public thing and it officially backfired
who proposes first
casper, hands down! I honestly don’t know if marriage is something that Lottie ever thought she needed in her life, like she would be happy without it but if he wants to then she would say yes without thinking ♥
if they keep / kept their relationship secret or let everyone know right away
well they started making out and sleeping together (before an official relationship) and they were done kind of in secret, i think? mainly because of Lottie and her refusal to admit she had feelings or was actually interested in Casper
where the proposal happens and how ( kiss cam at a baseball game? on a hillside surrounded by ducks? at a disney park? )
Casper proposes the same way he asked her for prom (the one that backfired lol) it’s really big and almost identical, his way of reminding her how long he has liked her. Lottie can’t believe she is saying “yes” to this but in a way can’t stop smiling and feels so lucky to have him in her life
if they adopt any pets together
My take is that they adopt another cat to keep lottie’s cat company!!!
who’s more dominant
In bed? definitely Casper hahaha
where their first kiss was and what it was like
I’m thinking their first kiss was either in the middle of the night in an empty street or in a really dark pub. It was definitely heated and angry; when things that have been building for a while inevitably explode (context: casper was probably teasing her and pushing Lottie’s buttons while they were arguing about something and she kind of snapped and kissed him)
if they have any matching couples stuff ( mugs? sweaters? pillowcases? )
Maaaaaaaaaaybe deep in the relationship they get matching mugs? I can’t really see Lottie wearing matching sweaters AT ALL nasbajkshajk. Oh and at some point she gifts him the same necklace she has with her birth stone
how into pda they are
I would say that once they are dating they are very into it. Lottie has no problem in making out in public or sitting on his lap
who holds the umbrella when it rains
Casper ♥
where their usual ‘date spot’ is ( if applicable )
I think they meet a lot in each other’s home, mainly because it’s the place they are more comfortable doing whatever they are doing. But there is also this small bar/restaurant with a view to the beach where they accidentally met a few times that Lottie really likes. It’s small and comfortable and their official first date was there
who’s more protective
This one is a really close one but I think i’m gonna give it to Lottie, I think? She doesn’t have too many people she REALLY loves but she would fight with claws and teeth for the ones she does loves
how long it is before they sleep together ( can be as in ‘had sex’ or as in ‘shared a bed’ )
after they finally kiss? jashajsa not long at all, maybe some weeks after it i’m guessing?
if they argue about anything
pre relationship? about everything lmao. Well mainly Lottie argues and Casper just pressing her buttons. In relationship they still do but not as much or seriously enough
who leaves more marks ( lipstick, hickeys, scratchmarks etc. )
Casper aksjasa (i mean that photo of Lottie with the hickeys👀)
who steals whose clothes and how often
she steals A LOT of his tshirts
how they cuddle ( spooning? facing each other? )
spooning!!!
what their favourite nonsexual activity is
mmmm I like to think that Lottie ends up asking Casper to teach her how to play the guitar, she finds it super sexy and she would really enjoy him teaching her. I think they would also enjoy sharing time together, she with a good book while he plays with his guitar in the same sofa
how long they stay mad at each other
Lottie can stay mad for weeks if the situation deserves, but a good number is probably some days and after that she slowly starts to let go. Casper gives me the vibe he can’t stay mad for too long ahahah
what their usual coffee / tea orders are
Casper likes his coffee with tons of sugar and Lottie orders one of those super sweet frappuccinos that are more sugar than coffee lmao
if they ever have any children together
Both Casper and Lottie are a little scared for being parents for different reasons, but after she accidentally gets pregnant and they kind of freak out at first, they kind of settle into it and are great parents
if they have any special pet names for each other
Lottie just calls him Casper or “idiot” lol
if they ever split up and / or get back together
once they get together they don’t split up again ♥
what their shared living space is like ( messy? clean? what kind of decor? )
I think it would be some kind of messy order if that makes sense? like clean dishes on the counter and maybe some clothes on the floor, probably a lot of things like books or paper over the tables but they know exactly where everything is. Definitely a lot of plants and candles
what their first christmas / hanukkah / etc as a couple was like
I think their first new year together is actually kind of nice? I’m thinking Lottie invites him to have dinner with her grandma and her! maybe he can bring his father if he wants too!! Her grandma is great at cooking and Lottie makes a delicious apple pie (honestly the only thing she knows how to bake lol). When midnight comes she doesn’t say anything but slowly and delicately interlaces their fingers; it's small and simple, but it means a lot. Lottie’s house is at the outskirts of town, so if it’s too late or there is too much snow, then he (and his father if he came) are more than welcome to stay the night…….
what their names are in each other’s phones
Casper's name changed a lot through the years lmao, at first it was “??????” then it move to “Casper Nahm” to “C*****” to “Casper DO NOT PICK UP” and now is just “Casper” lmao
if they have any ‘couple traditions’ ( buying a new mug for their collection every year? baking every friday evening? )
Casper waits until Lottie closes the store and then walks her home talking about their day. Every Thursday they meet for lunch at the diner (maybe they also do it other days too but Thursdays is a must). And every anniversary, Lottie gifts Casper a guitar pick (plus his other gift)
who falls asleep first and who wakes up first
askjasa i think Lottie is the first one to fall asleep but also the first to wake up, honestly she can fall asleep everywhere ahahah
who’s the big spoon / little spoon
Casper is the little spoon!!! And Lottie is the big spoon and totally loves it!
who hogs the bathroom
Casper, I didn’t have to even think about it haahhaah
who kills the spiders / takes them outside
Lottie kills the spider with a lot of strength and passion hahahah
#thank you so much Isa 💕💕💕#yakovasilyev#ask#smalltownverse: casper x lottie#isa🐰#subjected to possible changes#lolol#this was fun!

5 moments from The Handmaid’s Tale that are scary because they’re true.
Based on the novel written by Margaret Atwood over thirty years ago, The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu isn’t afraid to punch us in the gut. In truth, the show is so relevant that it’s actually extremely uncomfortable to watch.
There are many moments in the first season of The Handmaid’s Tale that are so disturbing because they seem so real, but I’m only limiting myself to five because if I didn’t, the list would be upwards of 100.
So, here are (only) five moments from The Handmaid’s Tale that are way too real.
1. Whose fault is it? Her fault
In a flashback at the red center, where they train potential handmaids for duty, one character named Janine confesses to being sexually assaulted as a teenager. Aunt Lydia, their handler, asks her group of girls who is to blame for what happened to Janine.
The handmaids raise their red arms in unison, point accusatory fingers to Janine, and chant, “Her fault.” If that is not an allegory for the victim-shaming that is still so prevalent in cases of sexual assault, then I don’t know what is.
When people ask victims of sexual assault today, “What were you wearing? Did you have a lot to drink?” what they are really asking is, “Whose fault is it?” And what they’re really saying is the answer is it’s your fault.
2. A group of men sign new bill into law. What’s wrong with this picture?
The show takes place in a country where female reproductive habits are governmentally regulated to such a degree that it’s virtually impossible for women to decide when and how they get pregnant. Did I mention it’s called Gilead and not the United States? Really, in The Handmaid’s Tale they are one in the same.
It’s not overtly stated, but I cant help but notice the abundance of Y chromosomes in any scenes involving Gilead’s lawmakers. I need only remind you of that photo of President Trump signing an anti-abortion executive order last January featuring lots of white men and nobody else. No matter your beliefs about female reproductive rights, representation is important.
3. The shunting aside of Serena Joy
One of the most fascinating characters of the show is Commander Waterford’s wife, Serena Joy, played by Yvonne Strahovski. She’s married to one of the most powerful men in Gilead, but she’s a woman, and that means she has very little power.
Serena Joy was the one to come up with the idea of handmaids in the first place, and yet, she resents her handmaid the most. She helped create a society whose regulations she thought wouldn’t affect her daily life, but they do, and now she can’t do anything about it.
Serena Joy is a cautionary tale that even though you may think an issue doesn’t affect you now it may become one of the biggest issues of your life.
4. The fate of Emily and her lover
By far one of the most disturbing images in The Handmaid’s Tale occurs in episode 3, “Late. In Gilead, homosexuality is illegal, so as lesbians, Emily and her lover are arrested. Because Emily is fertile and fertility is a rare commodity in Gilead, she isn’t given the death sentence.
She’s handcuffed and gagged, unable to defend herself at her own trial, and watches her lover be strung up and hanged as the van she rides in drives away. There is so much to unpack in this scene, not to mention the allusions to violence against the LGBTQ community that still happen, but Alexis Bledel’s vivid blue eyes speak so much even though she’s not allowed to speak at all during this episode.
If that weren’t enough of a gut-punch, there’s the final scene. To cure Emily’s sinful sexual impulses, they’ve performed female genital mutilation on her body without her consent. As the realization of what happened dawns on Emily, we are reminded of “cures” like conversion therapy for LGBTQ individuals, and that female genital mutilation is still practiced in many countries today.
5. This will all be normal
Offred’s introduction to the red center and her new role as a handmaid is brutal, to say the least. She is brainwashed and witnesses disobedient handmaids chastised with cattle prods.
All the while Aunt Lydia soothes her by saying though it seems strange now, “Soon this will all be normal.” Although we do not live in Gilead, we wonder along with Offred how things that are just part of normal life now like school shootings were once extraordinary.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Postmortem: Max Minghella on Nick’s Reveal
Max Minghella as Nick in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ (Photo by: Take Five/Hulu)
Warning: This post contains spoilers for the “Faithful” episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Despite their puritanical leanings, the Founding Fathers of Gilead haven’t been able to completely eliminate sex from their evolving society. The ongoing fertility crisis makes procreation a necessary practice. What they have achieved is successfully removing the concept of romance, of pleasure — for men, and especially for women — from sex. Every bedroom encounter we’ve witnessed in The Handmaid’s Tale to date deliberately resembles, in the words of series star Elisabeth Moss, a sexual assault rather than a passionate coupling.
That changes in the final scene of the show’s fifth episode, “Faithful.” Leaving her attic room under the cover of night, Offred (Moss) heads directly to the apartment above the garage where the Waterfords’ driver Nick (Max Minghella) sleeps. No words pass between them as she removes his shirt and pants, followed by her own Handmaid habit. And then, they’re on top of each other, caught in the grip of a physical longing that’s been too long suppressed. Director Mike Barker makes the conscious choice to keep the camera on Offred throughout; Nick’s present in the room, but he’s almost incidental to her emotional (and erotic) experience.
“That scene, to me, is really about release for June,” Minghella tells Yahoo TV, referring — as he will throughout our interview — to Offred by her pre-Gilead name. “I felt like I was the least important factor. This society is so terrified of female pleasure specifically, so these moments of reprieve are important. That scene was simple to shoot [because] it was more primal than anything else I worked on. Mike is uniquely gifted to shoot such scenes — he’s a man with no filter. And Lizzie and I are very close and trust and respect each other. It’s was a very effective combination of people to tackle a scene like that.” (Fun fact: Barker has directed multiple episodes of Outlander, another show famous for its energizing sex scenes.)
Elisabeth Moss and Minghella in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ (Photo: George Kraychyk/Hulu)
That Offred chooses Nick as the person to release herself with is a decision that, for her at least, seems based more on proximity than affection. While the enigmatic chauffeur has been a source of fascination for her since entering the Waterford residence, she’s more attracted to figuring out his deal than his personality. (She’s also clinging to memories of her husband, Luke, who we see in the flashbacks that are sprinkled throughout “Faithful” revealing how they fell in love. It’s a storyline that also gives the episode it’s semi-ironic title: Luke was married when he and June met, and he left his wife for her.) That fascination doubles after Ofglen warns her that there’s an Eye living in her household — and process of elimination makes Nick the most likely suspect.
Sure enough, he discloses his status as a member of the secret police to Offred midway through “Faithful,” getting a jump on a revelation that’s saved for the final pages of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel. As Minghella explains, the fact that he confesses this early in the series signals that Nick is far more into Offred than the other way around. “There was a lot of discussion about how easy that confession should be,” he says. “I like the notion that June has this power over Nick that causes him to make decisions that aren’t necessarily [ideal] for his self-preservation. The power of love is a strong thing.”
Moss and Yvonne Strahovski in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ (Photo: George Kraychyk/Hulu)
Nick’s intense attraction to Offred, as well as his equally intense survival instinct, are both motivating factors behind his decision to agree to Serena Joy’s (Yvonne Strahovski) proposal that he be the one to father the Handmaid’s child in place of Fred (Joseph Fiennes). So with his boss’s wife standing guard, alternately watching them and looking out the window lest any of the household staff wander into this illegal arrangement, Nick has his own “breeding ceremony” with Offred, and it’s about as awkward and unpleasant as her evenings with the Commander — a direct contrast to the wild, unobserved sex they both enjoy later. “It’s sort of a miracle she forgives me after that,” Minghella says, chuckling. “I don’t think that Nick is delighted by that scenario; he has real feelings for this woman, and it’s an awful way for that to be expressed for the first time.”
The exact nature of Nick’s feelings for Offred remains more opaque in the novel — a side effect of the fact that he withholds key pieces of information from her until the narrative rushes to its conclusion. With the expanded timeline, and shifting points of view, that have accompanied translating the book to television, Minghella had to make specific performance choices that bring the character into sharper focus. Early on, for example, he decided that Nick should have a very “militant” physicality that complements his status as a secret government agent, and hints at a larger backstory that Minghella says will be disclosed in a future episode. “It felt a bit like doing Kabuki theater,” he says of the character’s deliberate movements. He relies on them to keep his face expressionless, avoiding any flashes of emotion that could leave him emotionally or physically vulnerable.
Now that Nick’s Kabuki mask has slipped, somewhat, in “Faithful,” Minghella teases that more of his true feelings may escape as The Handmaid’s Tale passes the halfway point in its 10-episode run and looks ahead to the just-announced second season. “What’s amazing is that you get to the end of this season and you really feel how rich [the show] is. It’s full of discovery and revelation, and yet we’re just getting started,” he says. Being able to grow with a character over the course of these 10 episodes has been a new experience for the 31-year-old actor, who — apart from a recurring role on The Mindy Project — has primarily appeared in feature films, including The Social Network and The Ideas of March. (Minghella is the son of Oscar-winning English Patient director Anthony Minghella, who passed away in 2008.)
“I found it fascinating to be behind the story,” Minghella says of his first brush with serialized television. “I was really learning about the person I was playing with the audience, week by week.” In fact, he signed onto the series not even aware of the prominence Nick would come to have in the story. “I think Nick had only three lines of dialogue in the pilot script,” he says. “It was interesting to discover that Nick would become such an intrinsic part of the story, and a pleasant surprise to be given a lot of challenging stuff to do.”
New episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale premiere Wednesdays on Hulu.

Are they or aren't they? Aside from “who shot Fred Andrews?,” fans have had a huge question on their minds. Bughead loyalists everywhere were delighted when gossip began to swirl indicating that the actors behind their beloved character couple were linked romantically off screen. Are Cole Sprouse and Lili Rienhart dating? The man behind Jughead Jones himself finally addressed the rumors about the cast's relationship status.
The cast of was interviewed for ’s Fall TV Preview and (in an excerpt reported by Just Jared) Cole weighed in on how the fandom affects their personal lives, saying,
Since the show began, people have wanted Lili and I to be together. People have wanted Lili and Camila to be together. People have wanted KJ and I to be together. People have wanted every actor on this show to be in a union that they could make real…
So, is #Colehart a thing? The stars have reportedly been spotted out together and since the news of their potential relationship broke, naturally fans have been bugging (or Bugheadding?) out ever since. Sprouse continued,
Truthfully, it's very pleasing that people talk about Lili and I in that way because it means that we're resonating so strongly that people really want that to be true.
The rumors have not been confirmed, but that doesn't mean social media doesn't fuel the fire. Cole, perhaps trolling the life out of us, recently posted a throwback photo to his Instagram story that featured a young fan who happened to look suspiciously like a baby Lili.
The pair isn't shy when it comes to posting about one another. Sprouse, who is quite the impressive photog, has a few memorable shots of the talented lady behind Betty Cooper up on his gram.
And Lili has made it clear she's got love for her co-star. Although, to be fair, a scroll through her social media reveals she's pretty tight with everyone.
It appears that the cast is super close, so naturally the rumor mill has been spinning ever since the show first premiered. Skeet Ulrich, who plays Jughead's dad, even remarked on their “great chemistry” last month. “It seems like it. It seems like it, yeah,” he told when asked if they have “special connection.” “You just hear them talking to each other like they've been best friends for 20 years. So it's a good sign.”
Giphy
is returning for Season 2 in October and while we don't know about Lili and Cole IRL, we do have some insight into the fact that Bughead is in trouble. ’s interview went deeper into their their romantic future. Producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that Jughead goes on a pretty dark journey and that's the tension in Betty and Jughead's relationship.” Reinhart says that their story “might tear some people's hearts out” and she likens the drama's narrative to “Romeo and Juliet.” Yikes. Maybe a civil war really is coming to Riverdale.
Teen dramas have a history of making real-life love connections, so if Lili and Cole are dating it wouldn't be new TV's social history. Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody ( ’s Seth and Summer), Blake Lively and Penn Badgley (’s Serena and Dan), Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush of and Gilmore Girls' Milo Ventimiglia and Alexis Bledel A.K.A. Jess and Rory are members of the club. Whether Lili and Cole are dating or just buds, we're glad to know he's “pleased” that fans ship them so hard. We hope this is just the beginning of a long-lasting relationship, off and on screen.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Postmortem: Alexis Bledel on Ofglen’s Plight
Alexis Bledel as Ofglen in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ (Credit: George Kraychyk/Hulu)
Warning: This post contains spoilers for the “Late” episode of The Handmaid’s Tale as well as the 1985 novel.
Offred’s story in The Handmaid’s Tale is one of loss: loss of choice, loss of autonomy, and, above all, loss of family and friends. Individuals vanish with alarming frequency from her personal narrative, in most cases never to be seen again. Making matters worse is the fact that their disappearance isn’t accompanied by any sense of finality; there’s no corpse for her to view or tangible memento that’s been left behind. They’re simply gone, and their fate often remains unknowable to those who loved them. More than any of the rigidly enforced rules that govern the Republic of Gilead, that threat of being erased is what keeps women like Offred in their designated place. Even her regimented life is preferable to joining the ranks of the disappeared.
In a bold choice — not to mention a risky one in that it substantially departs from Margaret Atwood’s novel — the third episode of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, “Late,” shows viewers what happens to one of the disappeared: Ofglen (Alexis Bledel), Offred’s assigned traveling partner when she’s out in public. After being mutually suspicious of each other for some time, the Handmaids found common ground in the series premiere when Ofglen reveals that she’s privy to certain details about the inner workings of Gilead. At the end of the episode, though, Oflgen vanished, replaced by another woman answering to that name. This switch also happens in the novel, where, in a rare instance, Atwood allowed her heroine some closure, with the “new” Ofglen informing Offred that her predecessor hanged herself moments before being taken prisoner.

As we learn in “Late,” this version of Ofglen doesn’t have the same sad, but mercifully short, end. Having been captured by the all-seeing police force, the Eye, the Handmaid quickly passes through what passes for a justice system in Gilead. It’s the first time in this version of The Handmaid’s Tale that we’re presented with a point of view other than Offred’s, and are exposed to aspects of this society that were previously left to the narrator’s imagination on the page. “It was exciting to know that [showrunner] Bruce Miller had created part of Ofglen’s storyline,” Bledel tells Yahoo TV about steering The Handmaid’s Tale into these uncharted waters. “I remember getting the script and thinking he had handed me the most amazing opportunity for an actor.”
Having been ripped out of the public eye, Ofglen’s journey begins in a gleaming white prison, her voice stolen by a Hannibal Lecter-like mouth guard that remains in place until the episode’s closing moments. “That forced me to make very distinct choices in expressing emotion,” Bledel says about having to give an essentially silent performance. “I had to be very deliberate and clear about what Ofglen is thinking with my eyes and my physicality.” Literally manhandled from the moment she’s ushered through the prison doors, Ofglen has no sense of what awaits her and neither do viewers — whether we’ve read the book or not. “Right away, I could feel her plight. Even though she’s probably the most informed Handmaid out of anybody, because she has information she’s not supposed to have about the Commanders, she has no idea what’s going to happen to her,” Bledel says. “There are things in this world that she can’t even imagine.”
It’s that fear of the unknown that drives Ofglen to bravely fight back with the only commodity she has at hand: sex. In the hallway prior to her hearing, she tentatively reaches her hand out to touch her male guard’s crotch, silently suggesting what she’s willing to offer in exchange for her freedom. And Bledel points out that if you look closely at the way director Reed Morano frames the scene, you’ll notice an “Exit” sign deliberately positioned behind the guard’s head, putting into words the thoughts that are running through her mind. “That Exit sign is just out of the corner of her eye, and she thinks, ‘I’m going to get past this guard.’ She’s still trying to find a way to survive, even though she’s fighting against such huge odds.”

Ofglen’s desperate proposition, which fails resoundingly, is all the more significant based on what we learn about her past when she comes before the court. Standing alongside a Martha who stands accused of another crime, Ofglen is found guilty of “gender treachery,” Gilead legalese for “gay.” And even though the state views that as a sin that merits being “sent to an eternity of suffering,” she’s instead sentenced to a “Redemption” that turns out to be anything but. First, though, she has to witness what her fate could have been. Shoved into the back of a van alongside the Martha, they’re driven to a construction site where the other woman has a noose slipped over her neck and is slowly hoisted into the air via a crane. This execution plays out in one extended take, with Ofglen observing it all through the van doors — an effect that almost makes it feel as if she’s watching this horrific event being acted out on a TV screen as opposed to happening in reality.
“It’s all too real and doesn’t seem real at the same time,” Bledel says in agreement. “You can’t believe that it’s happening. I remember when we were shooting that scene, we had an issue with the van doors. One of them wouldn’t stay open — it kept closing. That happened a few times. We shot it two times, and in the second take, which we use in the episode, there was a small flock of birds flying around the crane. It was eerie. There was a strange energy to that entire day, because the scene is so grim.”
Even grimmer are the episode’s closing moments, when Oflgen and the audience discover what exactly court-mandated “Redemption” is. Waking up in a hospital bed in intense pain, she raises her hospital gown and sees surgical bandaging where her underwear used to be. Her mouth guard is gone, but she’s too stunned to speak: she’s the victim of genital mutilation, although her jailers have been careful to leave her reproductive organs intact. “You can still have children, of course, but things will be so much easier for you now,” Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) says, her voice dripping with cruel kindness. “You won’t want what you can’t have.”
“I certainly know that [genital mutilation] is something that happens in our world,” Bledel says. “It’s a really shocking practice. So when I realized that’s what happened to this character, my heart just sank for her. Filming that scene in the middle of the night in an empty hospital made it feel like a scene out of a horror movie. It’s definitely her lowest point, and Aunt Lydia only makes it worse, sending her even deeper into despair, shock, and horror.”
Will she find a road back from this despair, and back to Offred? Bledel neatly sidesteps questions about Ofglen’s post-“Redemption” future. “There’s a bit more, but beyond that, I don’t know — I want to know as much as you do! I loved working with Elisabeth Moss and Ann Dowd, and I love the scenes that Ofglen has on her own,” she says. “It was all great to shoot.”
The first three episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale are currently streaming on Hulu. New episodes will be released every Wednesday.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Finale Screening! Or How Elisabeth Moss Is Simply Amazing To Fans! Autographs and More!
The Handmaid’s Tale is one of my favorite shows of all time. It’s so well done, and the series just celebrated it’s third season finale.
The series had a special finale event in Westwood and the cast was there for a q and a and red carpet.
Now, I wasn’t on time, so I missed who I really need, Anne Dowd. I hear she did come over to sign, but I didn’t get her. Doh.
But, Elisabeth Moss didn’t sign…

The Handmaid’s Tale FYC Panel! Meeting Elisabeth Moss! Alexis Bledel! Joseph Fiennes! Yvonne Strahovski! And More!
Last night I was invited to a special screening of The Handmaid’s Tale. This is a new series on Hulu and I was really looking forward to it. Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is a look at a future where having children is next to impossible and the women who can have children are forced to be Handmaid’s for the elite of society. The screening was followed by a panel with:…
