#7 Cal Advances to NCAA Quarterfinal

Bears Defeat No. 10 Long Beach State 3-1

GULF SHORES, Ala. – For the second consecutive year, the Golden Bears are moving on to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championship.   The No. 7 California beach volleyball team defeated No. 10 Long Beach State 3-1 for its second NCAA Championship win in program history. The Bears also defeated Long Beach in last year's opening round, and to draw an even further parallel from 2023, Cal will now face No. 2 UCLA in a quarterfinal rematch.   With all five pairs playing at the same time, the action moves quickly at Gulf Shores. Cal (22-13) claimed three first sets in a span of five minutes to swing the momentum in its favor. Soon after, the Bears had a 2-0 lead with wins on courts five and two.   Playing on court five for the first time together, junior Ella Dreibholz and graduate student Lara Boos earned the first point of the dual in dominant fashion, 21-11, 21-6. Dreibholz posted a double-double with 19 kills and 13 digs. Her kills mark paced the team and her .720 hitting percentage ranked second.   The rookie/veteran pairing of freshman Emma Donley and graduate student Kendall Peters succeeded in its NCAA Championship debut, earning a 21-17, 21-9 win on court two. Donley had an errorless, 10-0-16 performance for a .625 hitting percentage to go along with a team-high five. Peters swung at a .722 clip with 14 kills and seven digs.   Despite the Bears taking a 2-0 lead, the momentum began trending towards Long Beach (28-10) after it  took the first set on courts one and three and forced a third set on five. Long Beach State quickly cut the lead in half with a win on court one.   Needing to win one third set, the court four duo of Jenna Colligan and Portia Sherman jumped out to a commanding lead. The two sophomores got to dual point with a powerful cross-court attack from Colligan and a wide attack from the Beach on the following rally to seal the victory for California. Colligan finished with 16 kills and eight digs and Sherman added 14 kills, five digs, and a pair of aces.

When the retreating column reached this point and saw our cavalry onthe turnpike the panic seized the entire columne.

Here, wagons sotes, the siege gun or 30 pounder, arms, baggage and every thing was abandoned to facilitate their retreat.

This is the flat side of the creek and back to the road does not usually rise more than 15 or 20 feet above the creek bottoms. All enclosed is in cultivation. Opposite or west wide of the creek is bluff.

PENDLETON'S BATTERY came into action at 12 1/12 P.M. This Battery dismounted Rickett's called Sherman's battery and killed 45 horses. General Bee and Col. Bartow, after their retreat from the turnpike formed under Genl. Jackson's command.

When Genl. KIRBY SMITHS reinforcement (Elzy's brigade) came up about 3 1/12 P.M. Beauregard remarked, Elzy you are the Blucher of the day.

The enemy opened fire below Mitchell's Ford in the morning to deceive our officers as to the crossing above at Sudley's Ford. In the afternoon, about 4 o'clock heavy firing was resumed here and was effectual in diverting our troops from the pursuit to this point.

The largest group of the enemy was on the turnpike two miles east of Centreville. The prisoners state they left camp at one A.M. the morning of the 21st July 1861. They turned out at Widow Spindle's about 7 A.M. crossed at Sudley's Ford at 10 A.M., east dinner in the woods and were ready for fight at 12 M. July 21st 1861.

Good skirmishing was done all day by many regiments and stragglers, but Genl. Jackson' brigade held their position during the fight; After they were assigned a place, Seibel's regiment marched 22 in the afternoon.

ENEMY's Camp    Timber felled around about 60 feet wide as abbatis, and the enhancements in front supposed to have been  done under the flag of truce for burying their dead, July the 19th of 1861

   This Battery kept up firing in the morning of the 21st to deceive Beauregard and Johnston. It fired again in the afternoon at 4 o'clock and cause troops to be sent here that should have been used the the Stone Bridge. It is said a Courier was killed who had orders for Gen. Ewell's Brigade on our right wing to flank the enemy. Ewell's Brigade marched across the run in the afternoon, but returned back on account of false alarm.

Following Jax you go to the Robotics room of the school… however you didn’t notice that there was a secret passage in there which he led you down… arriving at a research facility you saw the Robotics teacher Alexandria with her Sister Roberta and aside them the man you saw from the Flashback of Sherman they called Erwin. As you looked past their shoulders you saw Sherman…. that Creepy smile and pale skin was gone… it was like he was a new person… however he didn’t really look 30 anymore… more as if his body was stuck in time. Roberta spoke up.

“He is stable and mainly his brain waves are normal again… however it seems his body has to catch up with his soul…. it might be that he will age a bit slower than us…”

Sherman smiled at her a bit.

“I am just happy I am alive again…. and not trapped in that state…”

Erwin ruffled his hair while Jax went to Alexandra and hugged her…

“You see dorm leader… before I came here I lost my parents a week ago… Miss Alexandria adopted me for now and I couldn’t be happier… I trust her and the others that Sherman will get better.”

Erwin spoke up. “Beatrice also checked over his health but we were mainly asked to look over it given the whole glitching incident during his Overblot but… it seems to have been linked to a curse the person who stole his soul put on him… it wasn’t Miss Fuchsia as it seems more so… from what I got reported by Unosis It seemed to have been her mother…”

Sherman stood up. “Hey, how is Uno doing?”

“He will stop by later… for now you rest and then you can soon get back to work… if you want to at least…”

Bears Take 3 Of 4 At Manhattan Beach

#6 Cal Tops #15 GSU, Comes Back To Beat #13 Hawaii

LOS ANGELES – After kicking off the East Meets West Invitational by knocking off #4 Florida State (14-1) to hand the Seminoles their first loss of the season, the #6 Golden Bears beach volleyball team continued their week with their third straight win over a top-15 team, coming back to defeat #13 Hawaii 3-2 just hours after picking up a 4-1 win over #15 Georgia State.

Cal 4, Georgia State 1 California (12-4) began the day with a quick 4-1 win over the Panthers (9-8), a dual which saw all five matchups decided in two sets.

Jenna Colligan and Lara Boos got things started with a 21-10, 21-13 win on court four. Emma Donley and Alexandria Young-Gomez finished out the opening wave by pulling out a pair of close sets, 21-19, 23-21.

Gia Fisher and Marilu Pally clinched the Bears' victory with a 21-15, 21-12 win on court three. Portia Sherman and Ella Dreibholz sealed Cal's second straight 4-1 win with a 21-17, 21-16 victory on court five.

Cal 3, Hawaii 2 The Bears needed a perfect finish after falling behind 2-0 to the Rainbow Wahine (9-8), but their final three pairs would answer the call.

Sherman and Dreibholz capped off an undefeated weekend with a dominant 21-9, 21-16 victory on court five. The pair improved to a team-best 14-2 record on the season.

The dual would go down to the wire as the final two matchups went to three sets. Fisher and Pally won theirs 21-18, 18-21, 15-13 on court three. In the match-deciding battle on court one, Caffo and Peters bounced back from a tough opening-set defeat to pull out a 16-21, 21-19, 16-14 victory and seal Cal's third straight win.

Lumi forgot where the catering was and she was opening each door, she had a box of Vanessa favorite fruit and she wanted to add them to the cake that made special for her.

Most of the doors were locked except one and when she open it her eyes widen seeing her soon wife dress in white with a red ombre with some gold speks.

Vanessa was also in shock, but she chuckled a bit, "What are you doing here shortcake?" She asked, but Lumi was to stunned to speak and her face heated up, "Y-you look beautiful..." She finally said.

Hearing that made Vanessa blush and smile, "Oh look at you being cute," She chuckled, "You should probably leave though just in case my parents see," She give Lumi a wink and she nodded closing the door. Lumi was fluster but she knock on the doors for the rest.

Lumi had a lot friends however, the one she was close to was Greg even though he does consume the desserts she makes.

Greg was getting Mentor by Nakamura as she approached, Nakamura noticed and gave a sigh, "I'll give you 10 minutes," This wasn't the first time Lumi interrupted their session. Greg smiled brightly seeing his friend, "Did you bring me something?" She shook her head and showed the engagement ring Vanessa gave her which made his eyes widen, "Oh my God I'm so happy for you!" He gave her a bone crushing hug as she yelp in pain before he let her go.

"I just wanted to ask if you wanted to be my best man..? Or maid of honor whichever that you're comfortable with," Greg was shocked and he nodded in excited, "It would be an honor as long as I get a table for myself," Lumi chuckled and nodded, "I'll make sure that table has enough sweets for you." Greg nodded before he heard Nakamura yelling times up which Greg waved.

During Alexandria and Erwin wedding it was time for her to throw the flowers, Sherman encouraged Roberta to go, though she believed it was silly, but he just wanted her to have fun and did slightly tease saying she could catch it making her face blush a bit.

She did go participate with Sherman giving her a supportive thumbs up. Alex soon threw the flowers and the women and possibly some men tried to catch it.

However

Roberta was the one to catch it which surprised her. Alex saw and seemed very happy, Roberta looked at Sherman who face was red though he was teasing the fact it happen made him smile a bit. After all he did have a surprise for at home, he was gonna wait til he felt was safe, but this felt like it was destiny, "Look at you," Sherman said making her fluster more.

• 761st Tank Battalion

The 761st Tank Battalion was an separate tank battalion of the United States Army during World War II. The 761st was made up primarily of African-American soldiers.

Immediately before and during World War II, U.S. military leaders had reservations about using African American soldiers in combat. General Lesley J. McNair, the commander of Army Ground Forces, successfully argued that "colored" units should be employed in combat. At McNair's suggestion, the U.S. Army began to experiment with segregated combat units in 1941; the program was supported by, and given national exposure in, Life magazine. The 761st was constituted on March 15th, 1942, and activated April 1st, 1942, at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. The battalion began training in M5 Stuart light tanks. They learned how to maneuver, mount, dismount, and maintain the vehicle's 37 mm main gun and .30 caliber machine guns. Final training was at Fort Hood, Texas, where they were upgraded to the M4 Sherman medium tank, which had a 75 mm main gun, two .30 caliber machine guns, a .50 caliber machine gun. Most of the black tankers had to train in installations located in deep Southern states such as Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas. In the days before the civil rights advances made in the 1960s, black people were still treated harshly in the South and often considered an inferior race there. The men of the 761st trained for almost two years, conscious of the fact that white units were being sent overseas after much less training.

Black soldiers of that time and place were subject to many racist crimes perpetrated by white soldiers, including a bloody riot between members of a neighboring segregated tank battalion and white military policemen in Alexandria, Louisiana on January 10th, 1942. Several members of the 761st vowed to retaliate. They commandeered six tanks and a half-track but were persuaded to stand down by Lieutenant Colonel Bates who promised to straighten the situation out. The most famous member of the 761st was First Lieutenant Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson. During the 761st's training, a white bus driver told Robinson to move to the back of the bus. Robinson refused and was arrested. Battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Paul L. Bates refused to consider the court-martial charges put forward by the arresting military policemen. The post commander transferred Robinson to the 758th Tank Battalion, whose commander was willing to sign the insubordination court-martial order. Robinson was later acquitted of all charges. After the war, he was instrumental in desegregating professional baseball.

General Ben Lear, commander of the U.S. Second Army, rated the unit "superior" after a special review and deemed the unit "combat ready." After a brief deployment to England, the 761st landed in France via Omaha Beach on October 10th, 1944. The unit arrived (with six white officers, thirty black officers, and 676 black enlisted men) and was assigned to General George Patton's US Third Army at his request. As the 761st was about to enter combat, General George S. Patton reviewed the battalion and made a speech to the men which offered a guarded vote of confidence in their abilities; "Men, you're the first Negro tankers to ever fight in the American Army. I would never have asked for you if you weren't good. I have nothing but the best in my Army. I don't care what color you are as long as you go up there and kill those Kraut sonsofbitches. Everyone has their eyes on you and is expecting great things from you. Most of all your race is looking forward to your success. Don't let them down and damn you, don't let me down!"

The battalion first saw combat on November 7th, 1944, fighting through towns such as Moyenvic, Vic-sur-Seille, often at the leading edge of the advance. The fighting that 761st engaged in at Morville-lès-Vic was particularly brutal. The unit endured 183 days of continuous operational employment. The 761st Tank Battalion suffered 156 casualties in November 1944; 24 men killed, 81 wounded, and 44 non-battle losses. The unit also lost 14 tanks evacuated and another 20 damaged in combat. In December, the battalion was rushed to the aid of the 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne. As part of the effort to drive the Germans from the vicinity of Bastogne, the battalion fought to capture the city of Tillet, less than 15 km west of the town in early January 1945. Supporting the elements of the 87th Infantry Division with just 11 tanks, the battalion take control of the city from the 113th Panzer Brigade. After the Battle of the Bulge, the unit opened the way for the U.S. 4th Armored Division into Germany during an action that breached the Siegfried Line. The 761st smashed through dozens German cities and towns in their rapid advance through the Reich. In the final days of the war in Europe, the 761st was one of the first American units to reach Steyr, Austria, at the Enns River, where they met with the 1st Ukrainian Front of the Soviet Red Army. The 761st was deactivated June 1st, 1946 in Germany. They have been called "one of the most effective tank battalions in World War II." In all, the battalion earned about 300 Purple Hearts.

Returning soldiers of African-American units (the 761st had been the first of many segregated combat units, including the 92nd Infantry Division and the famous Tuskegee Airmen) often did not receive a warm welcome home as most white units did. Their unequal treatment was a source of much disappointment and discouragement. However, the distinguished service of many black combat units helped convince the government, now under President Harry S. Truman, to finally desegregate the US Armed Forces soon after the war ended. On November 24th, 1947, the 761st was reactivated (as an integrated unit) at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and assigned to the Regular Army, where it served until again inactivated in March 1955. A monument dedicated to the 761st Tank Battalion was unveiled at Fort Hood, Texas, during a ceremony attended by surviving veterans on November 10th, 2005, as a permanent tribute to soldiers who had served and continued to serve throughout the world for liberty, honor, and democracy.
