Another war on the way?
Turkey attacked around 500 Kurdish targets in Iraq and Syria. The airstrikes follow a bomb blast on Istanbul's busy Istiklal shopping street on November 13, 2022, which killed six and wounded 81. Turkey blames the PKK for the attack, although the banned Workers' Party and the Syrian Kurds deny their involvement in the attack.
Turkey launched a military offensive against Kurdish units in northern Syria the following Sunday. The attacks are against the bases of the banned Kurdistan Labor Party (PKK) and the YPG, which Turkey sees as the Syrian offshoot of the PKK.
Turkey had already carried out five military offensives in the north of the civil war country Syria. They have occupied areas near the border and cooperated with rebel groups.
How involved are other countries? Well, Russia supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The US supports the YPG, which played a major role in expelling the Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia from Syria. But Turkey sees them as an offshoot of the PKK. The PKK is also considered a terrorist organization in Germany, while the YPG is not.
According to German Interior Minister Faeser, the situation is likely to escalate. Both Germany and Russia are calling on Ankara to exercise restraint. "Of course, we will ask our Turkish colleagues to exercise restraint in order to prevent an escalation of tensions not only in the north and north-east of Syria but throughout all of Syria," said the Russian President's Syria Envoy, Alexander Lavrentiev. According to him, Russia was not informed in advance about the Turkish air strikes. Turkey has called on "all of its partners", especially the US, to stop supporting the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG.
So far, the air strikes have even taken the lives of civilians. There is also a threat of possible ground offensives. He left open the possible start of these offensives. Turkey is more determined than ever to secure its southern border with a security corridor. The territorial integrity of Syria is taken into account, as is that of Iraq.
I find it interesting to see that Sweden recently visited Turkey and promised to crack down on groups and take action against those close to the PKK. Why do I find this interesting? Because Turkey rejected the NATO enlargement aka inclusion of Finland and Sweden, among other things, because they allegedly supported the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG. Turkey clearly wants to take action against the PKK and the YPG and eliminate them. Sweden agreeing to the requirement looks to me like a small "voluntary-forced" step toward Turkey's favor and approval.
We will see what the threat of possible ground offensives is all about. But I sincerely hope that Turkey will listen to warnings from the US, Russia, and Germany and not start another war on European/Asian soil. It is clear that Turkey thinks it could eliminate violence with violence. - I personally condemn any kind of terror and violence. No matter where in the world it happens. It is and remains a cowardly act. For me, Turkey's reaction is a bit exaggerated. I think that the terrorist attack is seen as the ultimate act of provocation, although the actual perpetrator is not yet known. Turkey's air strikes aren't just targeting the PKK or the YPG, they're clearly killing innocent civilians.

Turkey is attempting to convert Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the largest al-Qaeda-affiliate in Syria, into “moderate opposition,” Russia’s envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev said during an interview with the Syrian daily, Al Watan.
In the interview, which was published on October 20, the senior diplomat reveled that Turkey’s attempts are backed by several Western states in a clear challenge to the United Nations that designates HTS as a “terrorist group.”
Lavrentiev said that Turkey has not yet fulfilled its commitment under the 5 March 2020 agreement on the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, which is ruled by HTS and its allies. The agreement calls for neutralizing all terrorist groups in the region.

NUR SULTAN, Kazakhstan Russia condemns recent attacks against Türkiye in Syria, Moscow's special envoy for the war-torn country said on Thursday.Speaking to reporters in the Kazakh capital Nur-Sultan after the 18th round of Syria talks in the Astana format, Alexander Lavrentiev said recent attacks by "Kurdish groups," referring to the PKK/YPG terror group, in northeastern Syria against both Türkiye and locals needed to be discussed.Touching on Ankara's possible cross-border anti-terror operation in northern Syria, Lavrentiev voiced concern that such a move could trigger "separatist groups" in the region and argued that other solutions should be pursued. The PKK/YPG terror group often mounts attacks on Jarabulus, Afrin, and Azaz from the Manbij and Tal Rifat areas in Syria. The terrorists often target Turkish security forces who provide security in the Euphrates Shield, Olive Branch, and Peace Spring operation zones, and try to infiltrate the positions of Syrian opposition fighters from regions that the terror group was supposed to withdraw from under the agreements with the US and Russia.Since 2016, Ankara has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable the peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019).In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot.UN-led diplomatic process in GenevaAlso noting Russia's intentions to move the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee from Geneva to another location, Lavrentiev said Switzerland's attitude towards Russia was the main reason for this.Consensus on an alternative venue will be decided by Türkiye, Russia, and Iran, the guarantors of the Astana process, as well as the Bashar al-Assad regime and Syrian opposition.Lavrentiev said Moscow had conveyed this wish to the other guarantorsAbu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, as well as the Omani capital Muscat, and Bahrain were among the candidates, he said, adding that Algeria had also said it could host the next session of the Constitutional Committee. The Astana peace process was launched in January 2017 at the initiative of Türkiye, Russia, and Iran. Its meetings also contribute to the advancement of the UN-led diplomatic process in Geneva.Syria has been ravaged by a civil war since early 2011 when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protesters with unexpected ferocity.
