Bolton Valley, VT 16FEB2024
A couple of skiers trudge up toward the Vista Quad amidst the very heavy snowfall delivered by our most recent Alberta Clipper system. The clipper that began affecting the area yesterday evening was definitely potent – by the time I headed up to the mountain early this morning, we’d already picked up 7 inches of new snow at the house. I couldn’t really get a sense for accumulations heading up the…

This just happened.
I’m all About birds in my backyard. I fill the feeder. Then I throw a 20 oz cup of seeds in the ground because Dove, and asshole Blue Jay are too heavy for the feeder.
Just as I chuck the seed, Alberta Clipper arrives and blows half the seed into my face and hair. I had to shake myself off before going back inside.
Stupid Clipper! No one likes you.

just. big fuckin boat. not like a cartoon boat or anything, they just painted a boat on the wall in our gym
I don't know why, nobody knew why
I cannot emphasize enough that I went to high school in Alberta, which last I checked, was not anywhere near any ocean. they don't have giant seafaring boats there

It's coming
Today is supposed to reach a high of -7C or -8C, after which the temperatures are supposed to drop. An Alberta Clipper weather system is blowing its way through the prairies. The snow is supposed to start this afternoon, for a total of up to 15cm over 36 hours. We already have a light dusting of snow right now. I didn’t get a head count, but the cats definitely prefer to be in the sunroom, or…

Bolton Valley, VT 24DEC2024
Erica on Sprig O’ Pine as we enjoy some of Bolton’s great Christmas Eve ski conditions thanks to 8 inches of snow from our most recent Alberta Clipper system As of their early morning snow report, Bolton Valley had received 8 inches of accumulation from the clipper that began affecting the area yesterday evening, so I headed up for some morning turns with my wife and our younger son. We’re not…

⛄️ ─ build a snowman
@tczier
The storm had been sudden, an Alberta Clipper dropping seven inches of snow on them and effectively shutting down most of the state. Technically, Ben could do a lot of work from home, but where was the fun in that? By his logic, he wasn't at his home in Texas, and was therefore lacking all his home office essentials, like notes and a drafting table. And WiFi. Kidding. The power was fine, but as long as he wasn't answering any calls, nobody had to know that. There were some perks to owning his own firm.
There was a snowman half-constructed on the lawn, and he might have been humming "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" under his breath without realizing it. He didn't even have any kids he could blame it on. He just liked Disney movies. The top-heavy second snowball had started to slide off, and Ben had dropped to his knees to catch it, an oomph sounding as it turned out to be heavier than expected. "Doc, I think we're losing him," he laughed, shifting to try to leverage it back on without dropping the whole thing.

Ewwwww
The very LAST thing I want to do is go out in this nasty, stinky crap, but one of the interviews is in person. The other is zoom. Canada sends so much shit to this area - Alberta clippers, polar vortexes, nor'easters & now stinky, nasty smoke. The joys of living on the 'northcoast' (that's all the states that border the Great Lakes).

Member Ceci: Given that the government has not yet held public consultations on this $20 billion giveaway – all they’ve done is hold a few closed-door meetings with a select group of people and friends – and given that the Premier lobbied for this giveaway before becoming Premier and hired another lobbyist into her office to orchestrate this giveaway and given that the minister has said that there won’t be anymore details about this handout until after the election, why is this government hiding this $20 billion giveaway from Albertans? Are they too scared to run on it? Run on it.
Mr. Guthrie: Let me provide you with a proof point here, one regarding the provincial board of the NDP. On this board sits Gil McGowan of the Alberta Federation of Labour, who was supposed to be a champion of Alberta workers, but, Mr. Speaker, that’s not the case. He opposed Trans Mountain. He opposed Energy East, opposed Keystone, opposed Northern Gateway, opposed the Alberta Clipper, and that’s not all. In 2016 the NDP appointed him co-chair of a committee to diversify the oil and gas sector, and by diversify we mean eliminate, one more reason the NDP cannot be trusted.

Alberta clipper
Tumblr media
Northern Tier, dragging a cold front behind it. The low slides along the building trough into the U.S. to deepen.Īt this point, the Clipper starts to move. This pulls Arctic air southward from northern Canada, causing a building upper-level trough across the central U.S. A fresh area of low pressure forms as the energy passes over the Rockies and moves into the Prairies. Typically, high pressure is in place along the Pacific Coast, forcing the atmospheric energy to speed northward along the jet stream into Canada. Several ingredients are needed for an Alberta Clipper to form. This then forms into a new storm system that sets out on a path southeastward into the northern U.S. However, the energy in them isn't lost, it keeps moving along. The rest of the name comes from where they generally form, Alberta, Canada.Īreas of low pressure moving from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest tend to fall apart as they cross the northern Rockies, unable to strengthen in the dry air of the Canadian Prairies. So, where do they come from? The name, "Alberta Clipper," comes from the fact that the storm quickly clips across the northern tier of the U.S., similar to how fast 19th-century sailing ships known as "clippers" sped across the seas. However, they do bring cold, Canadian air that can drop the temperature by 30-degrees or more. Since they form well away from a body of water, Alberta Clippers tend to not have much moisture associated with them, so they are not big snow producers. It's a winter storm system that usually starts just north of Montana, in the Canadian province of Alberta.Īlberta Clippers typically form just east of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. No, it's also not a hockey team from Canada, but you'd be close. It's not one of your father's power tools either. Alberta Clipper is a funny sounding name.
