This discussion was recorded in the Magic Castle when we worked together there in March 2023. In our conversation, Jamy covers the gamut of magic from those who have influenced his life to an esoteric discussion of equivoque and the power of magic has on our audience and a deep dive into a theoretical talk about magic. Nearly everyone who is anyone in magic had their name dropped in this week’s chat by someone who intimately knew them all quite well. Jamy truly is the conjuror’s conjuror.

What not so important things did we learn about:
Callen: From Deptford. Sam: Family is from Peckham. Kensi: A Bromley twist-and-twirl. Deeks: Croydon. Eric: See Nell. Nell: Not around. Hetty: Absent.
Who's down with OTP: They are snipering together.
Who's down with BrOTP: Sam and Callen are fine but I loved the friendship and respect Ricky and Frankie shared. True ride or die guys.
Any pressing need for a young FBI Agent: Not unless he could translate British English into SoCal English.
Who is running the team this week? Fans of British Cinema.
Fashion review: Blue checkered buttoned-down shirt for Callen. Sam wears a dark-blue, long sleeve tee-shirt. Kensi is wearing a grey-tee shirt. Deeks has blue tee. At the poker mansion, Callen is in medium blue suit, white dress-shirt with a blue tie and a tie clip. Sam is wearing a red non-suit suit with a black tee. Kensi is in a black, sleeveless, sequence gown. Deeks is wearing a dark blue, pinstripe suit with a cornflower blue polo that has white piping on the collar.
Music: “Green Onions” by Booker T and the MG’s is playing as Ricky sets up the undercover identities. “Every Trick in the Book” by The Allergies is playing in the pub at the end.
Any notable cut scene: No but I was hoping there would be a behind the scenes piece for this episode. There wasn’t.
Quote: Rick: “They spotted the old bill.” Callen: “English?” Frankie: “We invented English. It is our language. We can do with it what we want.”
Runner up: Sam: “Enough of the rhyming. I hate rhyming.” LL Cool J hates rhyming – you saw it here first.
Anything else: The previously-s are Granger promising to help Jennifer Kim on the Santa Monica Pier, Jennifer working with Callen and Sam, Granger apologizing for not being around as Jennifer’s father.
In Hampstead Heath, England, four men exit a SUV outside a fancy home. Two are wearing ski-masks. The man without the mask, a Mr. Cooper, is taken to the door and ordered to turn off his burglar alarm. Also, if Cooper types in teh panic code, the police will learn about everything Cooper has inside his home. Cooper thinks his captor’s breath smells like cat pee.
Inside the home, Cooper is ordered to open the safe. As a warn to his captors, Cooper promises to kill their families and their pets if he learns their identies. The fellow running the show threatens to blow off Cooper’s head but that won’t get teh safe opened. A threat to amputate finger and then other more delicate places makes Cooper a bit more cooperative. There are bars of gold in the safe. The three men leave with duffles filled with the gold bars.
Traveling to the Royal Air Force Base Lakenheath in England, the thieves are all dress members of the English Air Force. In an airplane hanger are coffins draped with US flags. The gold bars are going into an empty coffin before being sent to Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. A man in a dark suit and a hearse is there for the special coffin.
The hearse and its driver wind up in a garage where a large man is grilling. The driver turns over the casket and wants a meet set up. The man grilling is surprised to see the gold bars – didn’t think the man in the dark suit and his associates could pull it off. He has a buddy mocking the man in the suit. The man grilling does as well.
The man in the dark suit gets a phone call from Frankie, the leader of the thieves in London. Frankie will be in LA in 16-hours. They are going to get the man in the suit’s “girl” back. While the call is going on, the griller – Andy – is mocking the man in the suit. He asks Frankie to remind him to kill Andy when they’ve everything is wrapped up.
Sam and Kensi are waiting in the Challenger – Deeks’s CI gave them the location of a buy. Kensi points out the minivan they were told would be there. Sam is a little out of sorts – Kensi asks if he wants to talk about it. Sam doesn’t know what to talk about. Kensi suggests why she is working with Sam while Callen is “forced to work with Deeks today.” Sam is angry that Callen showed up at a Halloween party they both attended dressed as a clown. Sam doesn’t like clowns. When Callen showed up to work wearing a clown nose that day, Sam thought it was best if Callen annoyed Deeks instead. Callen has lost his Hellcat privileges, according to Sam.
Kensi laughs at the concept of Hellcat privileges until she realizes that Sam thinks riding in the Hellcat is truly a privilege. Callen and Deeks facetime Sam wearing clown noses, wondering if they should pick up the people in the minivan. Amused, then suddenly serious, Kensi calls Callen and Deeks disrespectful – asks if he wants her to talk to Callen and Deeks. Kensi of course, is also wearing a clown nose. Sam remains unamused.
The minivan leaves with Sam and Kensi in in tow. Callen and Deeks are in the big black SUV, cutting off the minivan. Inside are Frankie, the man who picked up the coffin, Andy and his buddy. Inside the trunk is nothing. Andy’s buddy was Deeks’s informant. Whatever he promised Deeks was not in the back of the minivan.
In a very talky but entertaining bit of exposition, the two men - Frankie and friend Ricky (the man in the suit) - explain that Andy the griller was their boss years ago but now is helping with a problem. The men wouldn’t mind a spot of tea, either. When not grilling, Andy is an arms dealer who stole the MAHEM weapons system. MAHEM shoots molten metal into armored vehicles. The two men think the weapon sounds “very Star Wars-y.” NCIS thought the weapon would be in the van. Ricky and Frankie can’t help so Callen and Sam hope they enjoy the next 15-years in jail.
Ricky would like NCIS to help him. He starts cooperating. Andy stole the MAHEM system but was looking for far more money than anyone was willing to pay. Ricky was approached by a man named Steve McMillian. McMillian wanted Ricky to get Andy to lower his price. Ricky has been out of the crime business for years – he’s reformed, changed his life. After Ricky turned him down, Rick’s daughter Angela was kidnapped. Ricky told Andy to sell the system – Ricky would make up the price difference.
Frankie jumps in. He “acquired” the necessary funds from a despicable criminal in London and shipped the funds to the US. Frankie joined Ricky in LA and traveled to Santa Clarita to drop off the weapon system and that’s where NCIS “jaspered the whole thing.” NCIS’s involvement had McMillian’s people run and Ricky still doesn’t have his daughter.
Fatima comes on comms with a British accent. Callen and Sam are not amused. Sam is also not aware it is Fatima – he thinks it Nell (who is visiting her Mom). Callen wonders why does everyone in Ops pretend to have an accent. Sam wants to know what Scotland Yard told Fatima but without the accent. Ricky and Frankie were criminals but have been clean for years. Frankie even volunteers at a hospital. Andy Green, the arms dealer, is wanted for a long list of crimes, including murder. The British government wants him extradited right away.
Kensi and Deeks arrive. They see Ricky and Frankie as good guys who made bad decisions for the right reasons. Micky, Deeks’s informant and Andy’s buddy, is a complete idiot according to Deeks. He confused the weapons drop location with the kidnapping drop. Deeks starts dropping into an English accent, much to Callen and Sam’s dismay. Ricky really doesn’t care what happens to him – he just wants his daughter back.
Ricky thinks if they are going to get MAHEM and his daughter back, Steve McMillian is the place to start. Fatima finds a Steve McMillian she thinks could be the right guy and Ricky confirms it is. Frankie thinks Fatima is the name of NCIS’s supercomputer – like Alexa and Siri. Callen won’t confirm or deny. Kensi and Deeks are going with Ricky and Frankie to see McMillian. Now Kensi has an English accent and Callen is really not amused.
In the Chevy Excursion SUV, Deeks drives with Kensi in the front seat, Ricky and Frankie in the back. Deeks approaches McMillian’s house only to see the door forced opened. He enters with Kensi – is leaving Ricky and Frankie outside to their own devices a good idea – and finds McMilian shot and bleeding out on his living room rug. Kensi asks McMillian who shot him. “Bottoms” is the answer just before McMillian expires.
Home security shows McMillian opening the door to a man he seemed to know only to be pushed into the residence with several men in hoodies following. McMillian grabbed the man at the door’s throat – he should have DNA of his attacker under his fingernails. Using McMillian’s GPS, Fatima found he regularly visited a home in Lake Sherwood. Sam thinks it looks like a rock star’s mansion.
Kensi shows the mansion to Ricky and Frankie. Ricky doesn’t recognize the place but Frankie does. It is owned by “Super Fat” Willie who runs a big poker game every day. There are five or six tables going at any time and all the players are British. There is no way the team can just pull up and ask questions. Kensi mentions “Bottoms”. Deeks thinks that’s the name of an arms dealer. Frankie disagrees – it could be a card player/cheater, someone who deals from the bottom of the deck. Frankie was a card cheat – “a damn fine one” – he knows things. Deeks thinks this is great – they all go to the house, Frankie spots the card cheat and they have the killer. It doesn’t work that way, Frankie explains. British citizens only. Deeks thinks they can pass – he’s seen “Mary Poppins”. Ricky doesn’t think looking like a skateboarder is going to get Deeks in.
In a terrific montage, Ricky explains that everyone’s look, jewelry and mannerisms have to be right. Callen is from Deptford, Sam is from Peckham, Kensi is a Bromley twist and twirl (a girl) while Deeks is from Croydon. Everything matters here – the jewelry, the cologne, the clothes are all specific from their fake hometowns. The vehicles they drive also have to be fine British cars. Kensi and Deeks arrive as a couple followed by Callen, Sam, Ricky and Frankie.
Super Fat Willie acts as a matre’d – assigning Kensi and Deeks to one table, Sam to a second and Callen a third. Ricky is moved to the back while Frankie floats over to Callen. Frankie notices right away that their dealer is dealing from the bottom of the pile. Franke winds up winning his hand. Callen walks away, Frankie takes his winnings and moves to the bar.
Ricky approaches Frankie. Frankie misses the life a little. Ricky talks him down. The dealer at Callen and Frankie’s table was cheating with help from the player at his immediate right. Looking around, however, Frankie sees a lot of people cheating. He wonders if this is nothing more than one big con being run by Super Fat Willie. When Callen’s dealer steps out for a smoke, Callen and Sam follow. The dealer is Michael Giger and he tells Callen and Sam, who have identified themselves as NCIS, that he doesn’t know Steven McMillian.
Joining Kensi and Deeks, Frankie notices immediately that their dealer is also working from the bottom of the deck. He’s also not nearly as smooth as the first dealer. Under the table, Kensi is working her foot up the dealer’s leg. She leaves and the dealer asks to be relieved. The dealer follows Kensi up to a bedroom in the mansion. Deeks pulls up the rear. In the bedroom, the second dealer doesn’t recall knowing Steve McMillian. While Callen and Sam are questioning their dealer and Kensi and Deeks are questioning theirs, a fight breaks out in the cards room. It seems Frankie was cheating – “it’s like a reflex.”
Both the dealers accuse the other of being “Bottoms”. Ricky wants to beat the truth of them. He’s happy to show Deeks how if someone has a crowbar. They dealers are off to the boat shed. Frankie approves – there are likely more crowbars and hammers there. Frankie even mentions a dentist drill. Good thing Deeks is putting one of the dealers in a car when that suggestion was made.
Fatima tells Callen and Sam that the FBI found DNA on Steve McMilian. Callen is worried about search warrants and time – they need to get the DNA from the dealers now. Irish whiskey is suggested by Frankie.
At the boat shed, Callen brings in the whiskey, courtesy of Hetty. He explains that they aren’t in all that much trouble and the dealers both enjoy a glass. Callen pours seconds just before Kensi arrives to announce last call. She bags and tags the dealers’ cups. Sam explains the wonderful world of DNA to the men.
A few hours later, Deeks arrives with the results. Sam takes Callen’s dealer to interrogation downstairs while Callen and Deeks handle the other dealer. Both dealers are being sold the same story – their DNA matches the DNA found on Steve McMillan’s body. Kensi and Deeks’s dealer let the killers into McMillan’s home. The dealer’s brother was threatened by a group of North Koreans. Callen and Deeks share a glance before Ricky breaks in. He’s ready to kill the dealer but the dealer is like Ricky – had a family member threatened. Sam knows someone with a background in North Korean spies. The dealer who was threatened is going to sit with a sketch artist to see if they can figure out who it is.
Kensi brings Jennifer Kim to the boat shed. She is doing well in the country. Even tried her hand at gardening until everything turned yellow and died. Frankie suggests composting – as an Englishman, he knows gardening. After bringing Jennifer up to speed about Ricky’s daughter Angela and the MAHEM weapon, she is shown the sketch of the man who killed McMillian. She recognizes Seok Nahng – he’s in the US under one of a dozen alias. If they want her help, Jennifer needs a deal – she needs to speak to them in private. In interrogation, Jennfier isn’t looking a deal, she was looking for some privacy. Angela is likely dead and if she’s not, she is going to wish she was. Nahng is a skilled torturer.
Since moving the MAHEM weapons system is too risky (and difficult), North Korea likely has engineers in LA learning everything they can about the weapon. They will take it apart, download all the computer codes. The spies won’t have to worry about transport the weapon if they know how it is built and how the computer internals work. The North Koreans don’t one weapon, they want hundreds.
Fatima pops up on the boat shed plasma. Frankie thinks she’s a virtual image created by the NCIS supercomputer. Nahng has two U.S passports, one as Michael Lee and one as Michael Park. Michael Park has a cell phone that is sitting Chevy Tahoe that is parked outside a warehouse in Pacoima. The team is on their way.
The team enters the warehouse but it is largely empty. There are remnants of what is likely one of the weapons system’s computers is on a work table. The cell phone was a set up to get the team to the warehouse. Sam realizes the North Koreans knew they were coming.
Tracing Nahng’s other cell phone, Fatima found a call made from Super Fat Willie’s phone. Only that call was made at the boat shed. That makes no sense to Fatima so she calls Super Fat’s phone. It rings in Ricky’s jacket pocket. Ricky stole the phone from Super Fat during the fight. Ricky thought he could save his daughter by tipping Nahng off. He agreed to trade Jennifer Kim for his daughter. North Korea wants their traitor spy back. And since Ricky tipped them off to NCIS’s movements, he’s earned some trust. Frankie thinks it is a bloody, brilliant plan.
Jennifer does not think it is a bloody, brilliant plan. She’s furious at NCIS but believes they were in the dark. North Korea wants her dead. Ricky tries to explain that Angela is a true innocent. Everything changed the day she was born. But he doesn’t think NCIS cares about Angela – only the weapons system. Sam fights back – they have been trying to save his daughter but Ricky made his own deal and one that is outside the normal risk. Ricky wants to know who is at risk besides Angela. Jennifer answers – she’s at risk.
The team is going to the meet and try to bluff that Jennifer is available to be traded. If they can’t get Angela, at least they can arrest Nahng. Jennifer wants to know how involved Ricky was with Angela’s life. Telling Jennifer he was in prison when Angela was born, Ricky first saw her at seven-months old and was with her every day after he was out of prison until she left for college. She’s the reason he’s a reformed criminal.
Nahng calls. He puts a crying Angela on the phone. When Nahng returns, he give Ricky an airplane hanger for the swap – Angela for Jennifer. Anyone else shows up, Angela dies. The swap is at a small airport in San Bernadino. The idea is to make the exchange and leave the country. Callen wants the REACT team a mile out. They will all barely get to the airport in time for the swap. Sam asks Fatima to call the FBI and have them monitor all aircraft in and out of the airport. Standing, Jennifer Kim agrees to help.
The airport should look familiar to Jennifer Kim since it looks like the Salt Lake City airport where Granger picked her up. Also looks like the airport where Spencer Williams sold guns to ATF. Deeks and Thapa may have been there too in “Frozen Lake”. Anyway, Jennifer agrees to be cuffed and walks toward the North Koreans. Feigning a struggle, Ricky thanks Jennifer. Jennifer tells Ricky he was always there for his daughter, unlike her father. “You did good, Ricky.”
Four men in a pick-up truck pull up. One is riding outside in the truck bed. Kensi has the truck in her sniper’s scope. Deeks has the FBI waiting – if the plane starts to take off, they’ll put firetrucks on the runway. Kensi can’t see Angela in the truck. Nahng leaves the truck, telling Jennifer it is time to go home. Ricky wants his daughter. After Nahng has Jennifer, then he’ll tell Ricky where he can pick up his daughter. Ricky walks, talking Jennifer with him. Nahng sees that Jennifer is handcuffed as they move away. Nahng calls them back – Angela is in the bed of the truck.
Deeks is set up with a long gun but thinks the “this is a long shot for me.” He is focused on one of Nahng’s bodyguards. Kensi is read to shoot the body guard holding Angela. That leaves Jennifer with Nahng. Jennifer starts making her way to Nahng but her handcuffs are now off. She also has a weapon. Jennifer is not moving quickly enough for Kensi to fire. When Nahng threatens to kill Jennifer on the spot, Kensi tells the team to “execute” and the shooting begins.
Kensi takes out the guard with the gun pointed at Angela. Jennifer does the same to Nahgn. Deeks misses his target initially, allowing the man to get off two shots – one hitting Ricky, one hitting Jennifer – before Deeks takes him down.
Angela races to her father as Callen and Sam arrive. Kensi notices one of Nahgn’s injured men was about to shoot Angela so she takes him down. Ricky had on a bulletproof vest but was shot in the shoulder. Jennifer’s bulletproof vest to the bullet intended for her. She’s has the breath knocked out of her but she’s fine.
In a British-style pub, Callen tells Jennifer that the MAHEM weapon was retrieved. After all she did today, Callen wants Jennifer moved to witness protection. No more guards, back to living a normal life. Jennifer explained that while she was working as a spy, she truly believed she was doing the right thing. After today, saving Angela and bringing her home to her father, she was doing a good thing – it defines who she is. Callen thinks she’s Granger’s daughter. The two talk about estranged fathers who aren’t bad men, just aren’t around.
Ricky arrives at the pub – he escaped the hospital. Angela and Frankie are with him. The group toasts to tough guys, fathers, daughters, old criminals, friends and the little gangster in all of them.
What head canon can be formed from here: The idea of doing a really different episode once a season is interesting, especially when it is this well done. CSI use to have an episode like this every season – the corpses in autopsy would review their unfortunate demises, the story was told from the point of view of the criminal. Some worked, some didn’t. But it was a nice way to mix things up. The high quality guest stars – Vinny Jones and Steve Valentine were excellent choices
I think this episode was wonderful. Wouldn’t want it every week but it was a treat.
Episode number: Episode 246 – nice round numbers. Episode six of season 11.

392: Martin Lewis - A Study In Experience
Martin Lewis is an enigma and a most creative genius. His creations are integral parts of many professional magicians including David Copperfield and many others.
Time Stamps for this podcast:
00:01:54 - Martin talks about Earthquake Magoon's in San Francisco, California where a cache of Carter the Great paper was found; his late father, Eric Lewis; Harry Corbett and his puppet, "Sooty"; his inspiration that launched his career; dealing with nerves before a show; the importance of listening to your audience; the development of his "Cardiographic" Rising Card effect; how he envisions creativity; impromptu magic tricks;
00:49:54 - Product Review: "Quantum Angel" by Paul Harris and Bro Gilbert which is an improvement on Paul's "Cardian Angel" where an angel on the Bicycle card animates as you flip through the cards and a miniature envelope is revealed that contains a secret message. Recommended.
00:54:32 - Product Review: "Trojan Horse" by Steven Himmel is a DVD that contains four routines for using the card gimmick plus instructions on how to make additional gimmicks. Basically, this is a "Sandwich Card" effect where the card can disappear or transpose to another colored card or even a coin. Recommended.
00:56:47 - Product Review: "Screen Test - Pocket Edition" by Steve Dimmer is a mentalism effect where you correctly divine the name of a freely selected movie from a random group of movie poster cards. This is the pocket version of the larger, postcard sized effect. I use it and like it. Recommended.
