Fantasy Guide to Dukes and Duchesses
Tumblr media
This new series will offer an indepth view of each noble title in the standard European hierarchy of noble titles. Here we will discuss what they are, their lands, their jobs and everything you need to know when writing them.
What is a Duke exactly?
Tumblr media
A Dukedom is the highest rank in most noble hierarchies. The Duke rules a section of land within the Kingdom known as a Duchy, for example the Duke of Lancaster or can be a standalone title, Duke of Rothesay. A Dukedom is inherited through the family line, from father to so but the title is bestowed on the by the monarch. Monarchs can also give their children Dukedoms, and often do. For example the second son of the King of France would be the Duc d'Orleans.
Titles, Titles
Tumblr media
The Duke is the highest ranking in the land. They are the first among the nobility, among the wealthiest, with the most prestige. A Duke is referred to as 'Your Grace'. If one is meeting a Duke in a social setting, nobles would call them Duke whilst underlyings would call them "Your Grace". A Duke would also hold subsidiary such as an Earldom or two, a Barony or three. But would go by Duke as it is the highest title. Fun fact, Carlos Fitz-James Stuart (pic above) has the most titles:
He is: Carlos Fitz-James Stuart, Duke of Alba, Grandee of Spain, Duke of Berwick, Grandee of Spain, Duke of Huéscar, Grandee of Spain, Duke of Liria and Jérica, Grandee of Spain, Count-Duke of Olivares, Grandee of Spain,Marquess of Carpio, Grandee of Spain, Marquess of La Algaba, Marquess of Barcarrota, Marquess of Castañeda, Marquess of Coria, Marquess of Eliche, Marquess of Mirallo, Marquess of la Mota, Marquess of Moya, Marquess of Osera, Marquess of San Leonardo, Marquess of Sarria, Marquess of Tarazona, Marquess of Valdunquillo, Marquess of Villanueva del Fresno, Marquess of Villanueva del Río, Count of Lemos, Grandee of Spain, Count of Lerín, Grandee of Spain, Constable of Navarre, Count of Miranda del Castañar, Grandee of Spain, Count of Monterrey, Grandee of Spain, Count of Osorno, Grandee of Spain, Count of Andrade, Count of Ayala, Count of Casarrubios del Monte, Count of Fuentes de Valdepero, Count of Fuentidueña, Count of Galve, Count of Elves, Count of Modica, Count of San Esteban de Gormaz, Count of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Count of Villalba, Viscount of la Calzada, Lord of Moguer.
The Family of the Duke
Tumblr media
The wife of a Duke is a Duchess. If a Duke is married to a man, while there is no real world examples, I would personally say they would take one of those other subsidiary titles I mentioned above. Same thing with a ruling Duchess and her wife. However, a ruling Duchess's husband usually sticks with whatever title he came with. The heir of the Duke usually inherits their parent's next highest title, usually an Earldom. The other children are styled as Lord/Lady Firstname.
The Role of the Duke
Tumblr media
As the Duke is leader of the Duchy, which is a large section of the kingdom. They are in control of this section, the highest power in law and order, politics and all things in that section with only the monarch above. They handle administration at the highest level, raising troops from their duchy for the crown in times of war, see the collection of taxes and sometimes they might even advise the monarch if they are offered a place of the monarch's council. They would also attend the monarch at their coronation.
Cribs
Tumblr media
Dukes like a lot of nobility would have multiple houses, manors, estates etc. Their homes would be the grandest in the land and the social hubs for the Duchy and even the country. A Duke would sometimes live at court when invited but would also have the homes in the capital. This vast portfolio can become a source of income as the Duke can rent them out or a handy way to shelf relatives who depended on them.

For the get to know me asks, how about 2? (yo llamaria a los mios alba y césar 🤍)
2. what would you name your future kids?
omg I love alba for a girl too!! i haven't really given it much thought + it depends on my partner's culture/language. i think i'd like a name that is spanish in origin but accessible/easy for french people too. for example i was almost an aitana or an ainhoa but my dad thought the french would butcher the name incessantly so they went for something much more classic. maybe alba for a girl and esteban for a boy<3

The House of the Spirits - Isabel Allende
The House of the Spirits is the debut novel of Isabel Allende. The novel was rejected by several Spanish-language publishers before being published in Buenos Aires in 1982. It became an instant best-seller, was critically acclaimed, and catapulted Allende to literary stardom. The novel was named Best Novel of the Year in Chile in 1982, and Allende received the country's Panorama Literario award. The House of the Spirits has been translated into over 20 languages. The story details the life of the Trueba family, spanning four generations, and tracing the post-colonial social and political upheavals of Chile – though the country's name and the names of figures closely paralleling historical ones, such as "the Candidate/President" (Salvador Allende) or "the Poet" (Pablo Neruda), are never explicitly given. The story is told mainly from the perspective of two protagonists (Esteban and Alba) and incorporates elements of magical realism.

High School Lit Tournament Round 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Importance of Being Earnest: Cecily Cardew and Gwendolen Fairfax are both in love with the same mythical suitor. Jack Worthing has wooed Gwendolen as Ernest while Algernon has also posed as Ernest to win the heart of Jack's ward, Cecily. When all four arrive at Jack's country home on the same weekend the "rivals" to fight for Ernest's undivided attention and the "Ernests" to claim their beloveds pandemonium breaks loose. Only a senile nursemaid and an old, discarded hand-bag can save the day!
The House of the Spirits (La casa de los espíritus): In one of the most important and beloved Latin American works of the twentieth century, Isabel Allende weaves a luminous tapestry of three generations of the Trueba family, revealing both triumphs and tragedies. Here is patriarch Esteban, whose wild desires and political machinations are tempered only by his love for his ethereal wife, Clara, a woman touched by an otherworldly hand. Their daughter, Blanca, whose forbidden love for a man Esteban has deemed unworthy infuriates her father, yet will produce his greatest joy: his granddaughter Alba, a beautiful, ambitious girl who will lead the family and their country into a revolutionary future. The House of the Spirits is an enthralling saga that spans decades and lives, twining the personal and the political into an epic novel of love, magic, and fate.

LA ORQUÍDEA
En el instante en que me pregunto
si la orquídea va a morir
ella florece

Note
I’m halfway through the house of spirits.
Esteban Trueba is an absolute piece of shit, but is it wrong if I find him the most interesting so far? I think he is my favorite character and I don’t know how to feel about that.
He is so deep in denial, his actions alienate his family, (Blanca and Alba didn’t deserve any of his shit) I’m sure the people of las tres Maria’s are going to do an uprising and turn on him (and good for then when they do) his views are absolute trash and he still has the audacity to try to claim he is a good person.
But damn isn’t he an interesting character?
I think I'm not the person to have this conversation with. I read that book around three years ago, and it probably put me off reading Isabel Allende forever. I hated her writing style and above all else, I hated Esteban Trueba. Each of us can take something different from a book, so if you enjoy reading about him, I hope you have fun with the rest of it.
For me, that man is barely a character. He has no depth and he' only works as a symbol and one for all things I despise. I read this for a book club and I'm not exaggerating when I say every time I had to read about him I wanted to burn that book. I don't know you so I can't know how you're approaching it but for me it's not about his denial or his feelings. I don't care about him nor about his feelings. (I did care about how his actions affected others)
He's a stand-in for the ideal of patriarchy, for latifundiário/terrateniente. He's the story of the dream of climbing the social ladder with a very strong desire to oppress others. The social and political dynamics fell flat for me. There was no depth, only stereotypes for me, and, still, were it not I would not have cared for it.
He's a stand-in for the ideal of patriarchy, for what means to be latifundiário/terrateniente. He's the story of the dream of climbing the social ladder with a very strong desire to oppress others. All the social and political dynamics in which he's involved fell flat for me. Maybe if I weren't brazilian and weren't so familiar with the themes Allende uses I would have felt different but I can't work with what-ifs.
Despising a character doesn't necessarily mean I don't enjoy reading about them or from their pov but with Trueba there were only stereotypes and I need more than that to become interested.
I will say I enjoyed the stuff with the Victor Jara-like character but that's about it.

Sagarana [study guide (in Brazilian Portuguese) linked, as Goodreads had only the Spanish version]: Sagarana is a book by João Guimarães Rosa containing a series of short stories, published in 1946, all set in the rural landscape of Minas Gerais, where the author is from. The stories discuss of myriad of complex themes through odd characters, experiences and situations both private and universal, exploring reality through magical tales, and being inspired by real events lived by people from this region. The book also shines a light on superstitions and folklore, putting the popular myths and folk practices of the common man on the center stage of high literature. Despite the regional aspect not being as important as in later works by Guimarães Rosa, the book also features intricate and detailed descriptions of the landscape of Minas Gerais and the animals that inhabit it, adding to the immersion of the stories (found, paraphrased, and translated by @dhiibvulk - various sources, primarily the site linked above).
