The Alaska SeaLife Center's rescued baby walrus has a name... Ukiaq! "Uki" is one of the only walrus calves ever successfully rehabilitated, thanks to the collaborative efforts of walrus experts from around the country. Due to her young age, Uki is not a candidate for release and will find her forever home at SeaWorld Orlando.

Sea Lion - August 2023 Sea lions are very awkward on land, but in the water they are extremely graceful… and deadly. This sea lion was swimming past a window in its tank when I captured this image. He is definitely fat, but very much streamlined and attuned to flowing through the water. There is a sense of peace and power in this image. MWM

Baby walrus by Thomas Gorman Via Flickr: Looks like a very big baby walrus from this zoomed in shot. The orphaned walrus has grown since coming to the center [Alaska SeaLife Center, Seward, Alaska]. Does Baby get to meet Bindi Irwin, a conservationist and Steve Irwin's daughter, in person? I personally feel she deserves it × 5000
oh man, i also feel that she deserves it x 5000. baby definitely watched a ton of "bindi the jungle girl" reruns as a kid (who all remember discovery kids?? forget disney, baby was a discovery kids kid) and liked watching all of the irwins in their nature/conservation projects, even if she sometimes didnt like what they did re: going into habitats and partnering with certain organizations (ex seaworld). it would be very cool for baby to get to meet bindi one day, maybe thru one of baby's academic programs or maybe even in the future when baby is working in conservation at the alaska sealife center!! she would definitely be a little 🥺 starstruck throughout the entire conversation

July 19. Seward Alaska. 55-57 degrees. Rainy.
We visited the Alaska SeaLife Center and went horseback riding with Bardys Trail Rides. Fun day. We both thought we would fall down after getting off our horses but we recovered quickly. We rode through woods over rivers and to a field. 2 hour trail ride.

I'm sorry but the fact that Seward is a dot on this map is absolutely sending me
Like yeah theoretically if you could take a train from Edmonton to Irkutsk you would be able to take a train from Istanbul to Fairbanks, AK and take the Alaska Railroad from its northern terminus in Fairbanks to its southern terminus in Seward, a town of 2700 people, and go visit the sealife center or whatever... An intercontinental railroad passing over the bering strait would have some interesting consequences for Alaska, that is for sure.
I have a new favourite batshit rail idea
Please build it for the funny please please please
#honestly i just wish tickets to fairbanks and seward were affordable or had an appreciable resident discount idk#like the Alaska Railroad is great and I have some good memories but the tickets are competing with plane tickets for my travel budget#it's hundreds of dollars for one person. like i could get a plane ticket to visit prev or my siblings or one of my friends who moved away.#capitalist hellscape

New accommodations and the train to Seward
Monday, June 7th, 2021
CAL - It’s only been a few days, but I think that I am starting to get the hang of life in Alaska. Our newest home is a single room with one, extra-large window. I particularly enjoy single-room housing as it means I can lay on the bed all day while I stare at Michele as she works on her computer. In fact, the bed here is so well placed that I can see both Michele and the large tree outside of the window at the same time. I can conduct my daily surveillance without even lifting a paw! Life is great.
MICHELE - After moving into the worst Airbnb I have ever experienced, I finally took a break from complaining to customer service to take the Alaska Railroad down to Seward for the day. Given the bad smell and obvious mold infestation of the Airbnb, some fresh air and a new adventure were just what I needed.
I booked the round trip ticket from Anchorage to Seward almost 2 months ago and it’s a good thing I did! The station was packed and the train, while running at 75% capacity for health purposes, was completely sold out. I booked a first-class ticket, also referred to as a “Gold Star” and when I checked in they gave me a gold star to wear so that the staff would know that I was in the correct car. I sheepishly pinned it to my jacket and then tried to cover it up with my hair.
The ride down to Seward is about four hours and is stunningly beautiful the entire way. The train conductor excitedly pointed out moose, swans, bald eagles, sheep, and one black bear. I guess the train has been running for so long that most of the wildlife is desensitized to it. We also pass Spencer Glacier and I can’t stop smiling at my first glacier encounter.
Upon arrival to Seward, I opt to spend the day exploring the town. The train stops just about a mile away from the town center, but the brisk air makes it an easy and refreshing walk. I start out at Resurrection Coffee House, which is a quaint little cafe set in a restored church. They sell local art and make one of the best cappuccinos I’ve ever tasted. I sit quietly with my laptop while I eavesdrop on a group of tour guides that are complaining about the tourists. I feel like I am on an undercover mission.
Next, I pack up and walk over to the Alaska Sealife Center where I spend about an hour and a half watching fish, birds, and seals enjoy their afternoon. One tank even featured a 2000-pound seal, which an employee explained to me was extra active due to the approaching mating season.
With only 3 hours left, I wandered over to Zudy’s cafe for a cold beer and an amazing view of Resurrection Bay. While enjoying the sunshine on the patio some of the locals point out a humpback whale that is feeding all around the bay. I watch for nearly 30 minutes as the whale surfaces multiple times with a wide-open mouth. It’s an amazing sight.
I start ambling back towards the center of town passing through the starting line for the Iditarod trail and following a lovely walking path through Waterfront Park. I end up at Alaska Seafood Grill where I enjoy a fresh basket of fish and chips. The day ends at the second-story bar at Mermaid Grotto where I chat with a lonely bartender while watching the fishing boats come in for the evening.
The train ride back was relaxing and about halfway through we were surprised with dessert on the house. I am irrationally grateful, though admittedly a little buzzed from all the beer.
All in all, the train to Seward and back was the perfect idea for a weekend outing.

In happier beluga related news, Tyonek the beluga recently celebrated 5 years at SeaWorld San Antonio! In 2017, Tyonek was found stranded as a neonatal calf, in such poor condition that the individuals who found him initially believed he was dead. He was nursed back to health by the dedicated team at the Alaska SeaLife Center (as well as experts from other aquariums who flew in to assist!) and, after being declared non-releasable by NOAA due to his incredibly young age at stranding, moved 4,000 miles south to SeaWorld San Antonio to join their pod of belugas and Pacific white-sided dolphins, which includes several experienced mothers and other youngsters to grow up with.
Tyonek is a member of the endangered Cook Inlet population of beluga whales and serves as a wonderful ambassador for his wild family, as well as providing valuable insights to researchers. He is the first beluga ever to be successfully rescued and rehabilitated!

Horned Puffin - August 2023 We saw quite a few puffins in the wild, but they float very low in the water and tend to fly away as your boat draws near. At the Alaska SeaLife Center, however, they have an interior bird area with many different species. There the puffins– or at least some of them– are a little less skittish and allow for a neat image like this one. MWM

Walrus saved in Alaska nursed back to health, and cuddles
A walrus calf is being taken care of after being found on its own about four miles inland by oil workers in Alaska. The male Pacific walrus was found Monday and flown across the state the next day to Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward.
Crantor (sensitive, nurturing and passionate) square Sedna (sea creatures (walrus saved in Alaska nursed back to health, and cuddles)).
Staff with the nonprofit research facility and public aquarium are caring for the animal, which weighs roughly 200-pounds and was found to dehydrated and fighting possible infection. They also give the poor thing cuddles to keep him calm and he is already taking formula from a bottle. Get well soon, baby walrus!

the winner! sold out on the wild republic store but you can still buy it from jeff bezos's evil empire. i haven't chosen a name yet but in my heart it'll be whatever the eventual name of this baby walrus at the sealife center in alaska will be, because i went there on the same trip where i got this pal (the baby walrus was not available for the public to see but there was an informational video about her)
tag game: pick stuff from your room and have people vote on which one they want to take home (ty for the tag @bropunzeling)
i'm in my living room and don't feel like moving into the bedroom for inspiration so that's where the items are located. this doesn't matter at all for the poll itself
tagging @eponymiad @justshellies @nonimaginaryfriend @postoperation and anyone else who wants to do it
