HemlockClan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Founders: Luminous and Hemlockseer
Current Leader: Coniferstar
Current Seer: Scarletseer
Territory
HemlockClan’s territory is made up of evergreens, only a few deciduous trees here and there, bordered by WolfClan and LightClan. The forests, especially the West and East dense forests, are incredibly dark. The other Clans think they might have night vision because of how easily they hunt in the forests, but really they’re just used to the shadows. The Lynx’s Cave once belonged to a lynx who was friends with one of Hemlockseer’s kits. They slept together there every night and when they passed, they were buried together there. That cave now marks the HemlockClan graveyard.
The deep pond is where the Clan fishes during the hot months. During Frost, the cats play games on the ice.
HemlockClan cats avoid the Wolf Hills.
Aboveground Camp
HemlockClan’s camp consists of three of the tallest hemlock trees in the territory. The three trees are the leader, warrior, and apprentice den. When a new apprentice is named, they lay on the forest floor until they learn to climb up to the dens. While the leader’s den has a hollow where the leader sleeps, the warriors and apprentices all sleep on the branches of the trees together. The elders’ den and nursery are both made up of maple shrubs, which turn beautiful orange and red colors during the colder months. The queens usually choose to wait to go to the nursery, some even waiting until their kits are born, wanting to keep climbing the hemlocks and sleep in the branches.
Unlike most of the Clans, the medicine den actually leads into the underground camp, where they keep their herb store. The den is just under a large rock, dug out by the first HemlockClan healer. It’s rumored that they kept digging until they hit the cave underneath and put their herbs there. They were named Moledigger by Hemlockseer for their talent.
The sunning stones belong to the elders’. Other warriors are only allowed to stay there if invited by an elder.
Underground Camp
The underground camp is similar to most of the underground camps in the other Clans. The campfire is close to the elders’ den to keep them warm, brought down to embers at night to keep the plants enclosing their den safe. The medicine den connects to the aboveground medicine den. They place large ferns over the whole Moledigger dug out to keep it warm from the Frost air. The nursery is one of the warmest dens besides the elders’ den, stuffed full of moss and plants to keep the kittens warm. The leader’s den is in a small cave in the wall, elevated from the rest of the camp. This is where the leader addresses the Clans.
Lore
HemlockClan was founded by Hemlockseer, one of Luminous’ eight kits. Hemlockseer always blended in with the shadows with their dark brown pelt. Having come from the same litter as Caveseer, they could see very well in the dark, making it easy to hunt in the shadowy evergreen territory. They also learned from their mother how to climb even the tallest trees. Luminous gave them their favorite forest as a gift, and Hemlock fell into a deep love of the trees, along with the rest of their Clan. They grew stronger when they were in the trees, even believing that they had lose their ability to hunt outside the forest. HemlockClan cats dislike being outside the forest and avoid open areas unless they have a specific reason, such as going to gatherings.
It’s believed that every HemlockClan cat inherited Hemlockseer’s eyesight, able to see in the shadowy forest well.

Kinda want to make a set of warrior clans in Alaska or something and do some major worldbuilding and play them in clan gen as kind of a "basis."
Downside is I know nothing about Alaska

psst! hey! guess what! i make warriors name generators based on specific places!
-- central american (+ mexican) names -- florida names -- tundra names -- desert names (american & australian) -- new england, america names (made this one for my coastal fanclans, since they're based in maine) -- alaska names -- mesa biome names -- canadian names -- prairie names -- north carolinan swamp names -- u.s. desert names -- cave names (worldwide) -- southeast asian names -- californian coast names -- arizona names -- gobi desert names -- vermont, usa names
here's a generator with all of the prefixes/suffixes i use regularly! -- moth's name gen
and here's a whole clan generator! -- moth's clan gen
(go ahead and yell at me if you find something missing/something that shouldn't be there)

sort of an out of the blue ask, but I remember when Weed was first introduced, she and Tundrafrost were said to be old friends and they were being pretty touchy and blushy with each other and Chickadeeblur seemed kinda jealous. Did they actually have a thing for each other, or did Chickadee just misinterpret it that way?
…also I can imagine Weed sort of being the wine aunt to Tundra’s kids and that’s cute to me lol
Tundrafrost and Weed did in fact "have a thing" in their much younger years. Tundrafrost and Chickadeeblur didn't grow up in the valley, and throughout their journey to it Tundra had many non-serious flings, of which Weed was one. When Weed was looking for a place to settle down for her old lady years, she reached out to Tundrafrost, whom welcomed her to the clan. Chickadeeblur had no real reason to be jealous, as she has no interest in taking a mate at this age, and the three are very good friends now. You're so right though, they definately do a kid trade where Tundra and Chickadee get to enjoy Cavepaw's baby phase and take him exploring out of camp to get his energy out while Weed settles down to talk Kingfur, Sockeyepelt, and Chumpaw through their standard teenager drama.

I try to keep the names the game gives me if it doesn't contradict with the setting. Things like "Owl", "Weed", "Jagged", or "Fierce" while not being Alaska specific are things or ideas that would be accessible to the cats and therefore I leave those. But names that do contradict or just seem boring to me I do try to change to something similar but more specific. Sand -> Silt, Chicken -> Chickadee, Prarie -> Tundra, Dog -> Dogwood, etc. It's not that any of these couldn't exist in nature in alaska, they just didn't feel like they fit the story at this point. In the first couple of hundred moons I tried to make sure that litters were named thematically based off of the oldest kit's name and their parent's personality, but after time this just became too much work and I think the random names are fun too. That's why the Tundra x Chickadee babies are all types of salmon and the healer kits all have long plant names. Some themes are definately looser than others. I do definately change the sillier names and try to balance out the "weird", for example, the fish babies all have pretty plain suffixes because their prefixes are pretty out-there and nothing else seemed to pair very well with them. "Kingflight" is just a little much, to my ear at least. Also the healer kits will have short suffixes because their prefixes are so long and just from a purely mechanical standpoint I can't fit "Dogwoodcaterpillar" or "Rosehiptadpole" in a comic panel.

Thank you! And go for it! I'd love to see people use my ideas in their own ways! If you want to give a little "insert idea inspired by @loudclan-clangen" I'd appreciate it a ton, (mostly cause I want to go see what you guys are making), but if not that's totally fine. I'm definitely not the first person to do a lineage challenge, but I'm glad that you like my system!

Anyway. Hooker clan lives long enough for cellphones:
Mae: stereotype. On it 24/7. Blue screens normally wouldnt bother vampire eyes but she's using it an unholy amount. Someone physically has to take it from her hands. She's also the one who sets up the group chats (one with everyone, one with everyone but jesse and diamondback), and probably has little rhinestones glued to hers. Three thousand stupid cutesy selfies of her and Caleb.
Homer: videogames, conspiracy theory addict, trolls people for fun. Will not answer a call or text but FREQUENTLY calls Diamonback at the slightest concern that he might need help or something is wrong. Has her in his phone as "mom" but claims its sarcasm.
Caleb: inevitably ends up trying to contact old friends, family. Sarah asks him where he's at but her Facebook has pictures of wooden stakes and a flame thrower behind her in a workshed so he tells her they're in Alaska. Because it's dark 24 hours. Sarah reminds him its summer, and therefore daylight, and that he's still as stupid as he was alive.
Diamondback: All The Pictures. Mae and Caleb are the only ones smiling unless no one knows shes taking them. When she was alive she had a Kodak but this is so much better since it doesn't take film, and she can do videos too. Severen made the mistake though of going through her camera roll and found a video of her and jesse hunting that he'll never unsee .
Severen: thinks this is the dumbest thing they've ever tried to adapt to and hates it until he realizes he can irritate the hell out of everyone with it. Uses fake dating profiles for hunting (Mae and Caleb's idea that he stole) and matches with Caleb on the regular as a joke(?). They're fucked if he ever loses it though because he doesn't have a password on it and he takes selfies with corpses, with timestamps.
Jesse: had a phone for two days, 'accidentally' dropped it in a parking lot and then 'accidentally' ran it over.

Drifted Ashore House
Klatle-Bhi
from the website: Drifted Ashore House is the name of a Tlingit clan from Tongass, Alaska and speaks to Klatle-bhi’s family lineage. It was a Tlingit woman from this clan that married a Kwakiutl man, and was lineage to the Hunt family of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation; the lineage of Klatle-bhi’s family. The panel is a representation of the long history he has to the Tlingit people, and this clan in particular, with the two faces on the panel meant to represent the male and female ancestors and balance of that line.
"This my interpretation of a Tlingit House from Alaska that I come from. It’s a testament for many of us who have ties back to this sacred place. Through my Grandmother’s lineage, and many others. The strength and culture that is still being passed down through generations still exists, to this day." - Klatle-bhi

I just found this and I'm LOVING it so much. Cat tools/semi-advanced warriors who ALSO live by the coast (some of my favorite territories for warriors)???? That's amazing!! I also LOVE your art style!
Are we going to get to see how the cats go about making any of their tools and whatnot? I'm super interested in how they do it. I currently am working on a Clan set in Alaska and I have a role like your spootpelts but I haven't decided on tools or anything yet. I'm trying to balance it being realistic and semi-fantasy and having a really hard time so I'm curious on how you go about it!
Thank you so much!! I love developing their tool systems, it's one of my favorite things to do within the story.
We'll get into specific roles more relatively soon. There will be some focus on the Salty-Paws (the tanners). When I finally introduce Fossilfang, she'll give some insight into how the specialized roles work. The roles will also be brought up when I get to the first gathering, in a few more chapters.
Here's my advice for developing specialized roles and tools:
-figure out physical limitations
establish what your cats are physically capable of. ask yourself... can they temporarily stand/walk on their hind legs? can they use their dew claw/fifth toe as a thumb? are they capable of grasping/holding items in their paws? how will they utilize these abilities to make tools? in what ways will their tools be adapted to their anatomy?
-establish rules
figure out what is off limits or inaccessible to your cats. do they use metal? leather? wood? stone? something else entirely? how do they go about collecting/harvesting/utilizing those materials?
-research research research!
now that you've established your cats physical limitations and the rules surrounding what they can and can not use, look into what natural materials are found in the area your clans live. learn about how it's harvested, how it grows (if applicable), and how it is utilized. apply this research to what you've already established about your clans, and integrate it accordingly.
also learn about the processes that you're incorporating into your story. look into different methods and the tools that are required for them. how would a cat go about doing that specific task?
in my opinion, this step is the most fun!!
this is a very methodical approach. you don't have to follow my steps exactly-- or at all-- but i hope that you, and anyone else who is looking for this advice, at least find it insightful and helpful!

Oceanclan’s couriers
Swiftcurrent - A bit of a withdrawn cat who absolutely hates living in Oceanclan. She became a courier as an excuse to be away from the camp as much as possible, and her clanmates only see her sparingly. She hates the clan culture and the stress of living there, but feels too pressured by family to consider changing clans.
Stormpetrel - Son of Ternfeather and Horizonshine’s cousin. The tom is conventionally handsome and has had a string of lovers across all four clans, and he revels in the attention. However, this behavior has left damage in his wake, culminating in him accidentally fathering three litters of kittens he refuses to take interest in, with angry mothers to match.

Shannen's Native American Descent
We all know Shannen Doherty was of Irish descent through the paternal side of her family.
The Doherty / O’Doherty family is an Irish clan based in County Donegal. The O’Dohertys are named after Dochartach (c. 10th century), a member of the Cenél Conaill dynasty which in medieval Irish genealogy traced itself to Niall of the Nine Hostages. The O’Doherty clan and family name is one of the most ancient in Europe. The clan traces its pedigree through history, pre-history, and mythology to 2BC. (Source)
Tumblr media
Shannen and her dad, John Thomas Doherty, in Ireland ca. 1996/97.
Shannen was also from English and Scottish descent through her mother Rosa Elizabeth née Wright. The red-haired Southern belle also has Native American ancestry, most concretley the Chumash people (Source), and thus has Shannen (Source).
Tumblr media
Shannen and her mum spending time in nature, ca.2024.
Shannen explained that she wasn't able to be with her dad when he passed away on the 4th of November of 2010. Her best friend Chris Cortazzo told her to spend some quality time with her mother and him at his ranch in Tennesse, which is surrounded by Native American ground. When she was there suddenly the wind shaked the plants and trees and she felt her father’s arms go around her and say “It’s ok baby, I love you. I’m here" (Source) (Source).
Her mother Rosa said that one of her great-great-grandmothers (she doesn't know the grade) was forced to move in the called "Trail of Tears", the forced displacement of approximately 60,000 people of the "Five Civilized Tribes" [Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminoles] between 1830 and 1850, and the additional thousands of Native Americans within that were ethnically cleansed by the United States government (Wiki). Furthermore, she said her ancestor was from the Chumash people and was forced to move from Mississipi to Oklahoma (Source).
Rosa also said about Shannen's Native American's heritage:
"The whole Indian heritage to Shannen was very, very important ... Shannen swore when she bought this property [a ranch in Malibu to live with her mum, her friends, and to do a shelter for horses]… she says, I just feel it. She says, I know that this is where I'm supposed to be. And she just felt that whole Indian."
Also she was proud of having directed "Charmed"'s episode "The Good, The Bad and The Cursed" that features a storyline involving American's First Nations people's and Native actors Kimberly Guerrero (from Colville and Salish-Kootenai native peoples from Alaska) and Michael Greyeyes (Nêhiyaw (Plains Cree) from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada).

The Chumash are a Native American people of the central and southern coastal regions of California (Wiki), in portions of what is now Kern, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, extending from Morro Bay in the north to Malibu in the south to Mt Pinos in the east. Their territory includes three of the Channel Islands: Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel; the smaller island of Anacapa was likely inhabited seasonally due to the lack of a consistent water source.
Modern place names with Chumash origins include Malibu, Nipomo, Lompoc, Ojai, Pismo Beach, Point Mugu, Port Hueneme, Piru, Lake Castaic, Saticoy, Simi Valley and Somis. Archaeological research demonstrates that the Chumash people have deep roots in the Santa Barbara Channel area and lived along the southern California coast for millennia.
The Chumash lived in over 150 independent villages, speaking variations of the same language. Much of their culture consisted of basketry, bead manufacturing and trading, cuisine of local abalone and clam, herbalism which consisted of using local herbs to produce teas and medical reliefs, rock art, and the scorpion tree. The scorpion tree was significant to the Chumash as shown in its arborglyph: a carving depicting a six-legged creature with a headdress including a crown and two spheres. The shamans participated in the carving which was used in observations of the stars and in part of the Chumash calendar. The Chumash resided between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the California coasts where a bounty of resources could be found. The tribe lived in an area of three environments: the interior, the coast, and the Northern Channel Islands. Some researchers believe that the Chumash may have been visited by Polynesians between AD 400 and 800, nearly 1,000 years before Christopher Columbus reached the Americas.
Tumblr media
Chumash Family by American sculptor George S. Stuart
The maritime explorer Juan Cabrillo was the first European to make contact with the coastal Alta Californian tribes in the year 1542. Spain claimed what is now California from that time forward, but did not return to settle until 1769, when the first Spanish soldiers and missionaries arrived with the double purpose of Christianizing the Native Americans and facilitating Spanish colonization. The Chumash people moved from their villages to the Franciscan missions between 1772 and 1817.
Mexico seized control of the missions in 1834. Tribespeople either fled into the interior, attempted farming for themselves and were driven off the land, or were enslaved by the new administrators. After 1849 most Chumash land was lost due to theft by Americans and a declining population, due to the effects of violence and disease. The remaining Chumash began to lose their cohesive identity. In 1855, a small piece of land (120 acres) was set aside for just over 100 remaining Chumash Indians near Santa Ynez mission. This land ultimately became the only Chumash reservation, although Chumash individuals and families also continued to live throughout their former territory in southern California.
No native Chumash speak their own language since Mary Yee, the last Barbareño speaker, died in 1965. Today, the Chumash are estimated to have a population of 5,000 members.
Tumblr media
Map of the Trail of Tears
Chumash worldview is centered on the belief "that considers all things to be, in varying measure, alive, intelligent, dangerous, and sacred." "They assume that the universe with its three, or in some versions five, layers has always been here."
Human beings occupy the Middle Region, which rests upon two giant snakes. Chronological time is unimportant, though the past is divided into two sections: the universal flood that caused the First People to become the natural world and, thereafter the creation of human beings, the arrival of the Europeans, and the devastating consequences that followed."
The middle region (sometimes referred to as 'antap), where humans and spirits of this world live and where shamans could travel in vision quests, is interconnected with the lower world (C'oyinahsup) through the springs and marsh areas and is connected to the upper world through the mountains. In the lower world live snakes, frogs, salamanders. The world trembles or has earthquakes when the snakes which support the world writhe.
Water creatures are also in contact with the powers of the lower world and "were often depicted in rock art perhaps to bring more water to the Chumash or to appease underworld spirits' at times of hunger or disease." Itiashap is the home of the First People. Alapay is the upper world in Chumash cosmology where the "sky people" lived, who play an important role in the health of the people. Principle figures of the sky world include the Sun, the Moon, Lizard, Sky Coyote, and Eagle. The Sun is the source of life and is also "a source of disease and death." The Sky Coyote, also known as the Great Coyote of the Sky or Shnilemun, is considered to be a protector and according to Inseño Chumash lore, “looks out for the welfare of all in the world below him”. During the creation of mankind, the Sky Coyote was present among the other important cosmological figures. The Eagle, also known as Slo’w, is the force that maintains momentum and order among the other stars so that they do not fall down on and destroy earth.
Tumblr media
Chumash pictographs.
The Chumash cosmology is also centered around astronomy. Rock art and arborglyphs that have been found within Chumash sites are thought to have depicted Polaris (the North Star) and Ursa Major (the Big Dipper). These two astrological entities were paramount to the Chumash belief system as well as their perception of time. It is believed that the Chumash used these constellations to determine what time of the year it was depending on the position of Ursa Major around Polaris.

I love that Shannen showed her respect to her ancestry in some "Charmed" episodes, like in 2x10 "Heartbreak City" (click to see if bigger):
Tumblr media
Charmed 3x01 "The Honeymoon is Over" (click to see bigger):
Tumblr media
And the already mentioned 3x14 "The Good, The Bad and The Cursed" (click to see bigger). Her love for horses also comes from that connection:

One thing I found slightly goofy in Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans was that despite it being however many centuries in the future, with giant robots, spaceships, colonies on Mars, neo-feudalist warrior clans, all the cities on Earth looked almost exactly the same as they do now.
Did all the buildings survive the robot apocalypse unharmed, and they never built any new ones?
Maybe a Japanese audience wouldn't have noticed with the cities in Alaska and Canada, but I literally live here lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, they've got the Schwerer Gustav/Energia-Buran Grasshopper double-rail setup for hauling mobile suits around, but they're still using 20th century diesel locomotives in almost the same Alaska Railroad color scheme.
