Kashmala Tariq
Kashmala Tariq (born January 24, 1972 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan) is a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from the Women Reserve Constituency NA-277 for the province of Punjab. She belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) or PML-Q. She is also actively involved in women's rights.
Career
Kashmala graduated from the Lahore School of Economics in 1998 with a major in International Trade Laws (Banking and Finance). She was a member of Pakistan peoples party and elected into parliament in 2001. She is also involved in women's rights and much of her work in politics have centered around this issue. She introduced two bills regarding women in parliament, on honour killings and amendments to the Hudood Ordinance respectively.
She is among the critics of the Hudood Ordinance and questions its legitimacy in Islamic theology as claimed by the proponents. She identifies laws on gender discrimination, sexual harassment scandal and domestic violence among her priority issues and criticizes the feudal mindset along with a male-dominated culture as hindering progress and laws in these areas. In March 2005, when Tariq's sponsored bill on Karo-kari (honour killing) was rejected by voice vote in the National Assembly, she criticized the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) calling its leaders ‘self-styled’ experts on Islam saying they were exploiting Islam and the constitution and that they used Quranic verses to suit their points of view.
Tariq had suggested 3 amendments related to the issue of Wali (legal male guardian), compoundability and the remission of sentence but the opposition, i.e. MMA and Law Minister Wasi Zafar opposed the bill calling it "un-islamic". In August 2006 as a member of the NA Select Committee on Women’s Protection Bill, Tariq proposed that a husband, who had sex with his wife without her consent should be tried under rape charges. Due to outspoken manner against corruption and nepotism, her party sought to have her expelled from the party. She maintains that the driving forces behind her opponents are an anti-woman mindset and corruption in politics.
On September 24, 2007, she was elected to chair the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians from 2007 to 2010.
In July 2011, Tariq was a candidate for the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. She lost the first round of the election to Ms Fiamé Mata’afa, the Samoan Minister of Justice and Sir Alan Haselhurst, MP from the United Kingdom. Sir Alan was eventually elected as the chairperson in the runoff.
However She opposed a bill on reproductive health in June 2012 stating that it was not in conformity of Islamic laws and was too controversial.
She is an alumna of the London School of Economics.

MPs don’t need to wear ties in the House of Commons chamber
Speaker John Bercow recently confirmed that male MPs do not need to wear ties in the House of Commons chamber.
Breaking away from tradition, Mr Bercow discussed that it’s not essential for MPs to include ties in their outfit, but should wear “businesslike attire”.
Parliamentary custom is for male MPs to wear jackets and ties in the chamber.
Mr Bercow was speaking after Tory backbencher Peter Bone said he had spotted an MP – who was Lib Dem Tom Brake – asking a question tieless.
Know for wearing rather eye-catching ties in the Commons, Mr Bone said he was “not really one to talk about dress sense” but asked whether the rules had changed.
Mr Bercow responded by saying: “I think the general expectation is that members should dress in businesslike attire.”
He added: “So far as the chair is concerned… it seems to me that as long as a member arrives in the House in what might be thought to be businesslike attire, the question of whether that member is wearing a tie is not absolutely front and centre stage.”
Mr Bercow went on to say that MPs should always show respect towards their colleagues or the House of Commons, he added: “Do I think it’s essential that a member wears a tie? No.”
To laughter from MPs, Mr Bercow clarified that there was “absolutely no obligation on female members not to wear ties, if they so choose”.
The official rule book of parliament – Erskine May – only has a limited set of rules on members’ dress; namely that military insignia or uniforms should not be worn in the Commons and that the custom is “for gentlemen members to wear jackets and ties”.
As a parliamentary factsheet notes, the Speaker has “on a number of occasions, taken exception to informal clothing, including the non-wearing of jackets and ties by men”.
Back in 2009, MP Graham Allen was interrupted by former deputy speaker Sir Alan Haselhurst who told him he was not “properly attired” when he tried to ask a question when not wearing a tie.
Two years later, Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi apologised after a novelty tie he was wearing started playing a tune while he was in the middle of a Commons speech…
