 Jolee Callan
Jolee Callan had her whole life ahead of her. The 18-year-old had a new boyfriend and was about to begin college when she agreed to meet her ex-boyfriend, Loren Daniel Bunner, for one last hiking trip. The trip was, presumably, meant to be a chance for the duo to come to an understanding about the future of their relationship — as friends.
Bunner was possessive and wanted Callan to “spend time with him and his friends only.” Bunner became increasingly jealous. Callan’s previous attempts to break up with him were unsuccessful, as he’d threaten suicide each time she tried to leave. Finally, Callan succeeded in breaking it off with Bunner, but this decision would prove fatal.
Months later, Jolee Callan had a new beau and Bunner contacted her for a hike “as friends.” She agreed and jokingly texted a friend the night before their meetup: “if something happens to me, you’ll know who I was with.”
On August 30, 2015, the pair took Callan’s dog, Kiba, to the Pinhoti Trail in Cheaha State Park in the Alabama countryside. Bunner chillingly chronicled the day’s events on his Instagram page. He uploaded three photos of Callan on their final hike together, with the last photo of her on a cliffside with her back to the camera taken just minutes before he shot her twice with a .22 Bear Claw.
Bunner fired the first bullet into the back of her head. When Callan collapsed, Bunner flipped her over and shot her once more once in between her eyes. Then, he shoved her off the 40-foot cliff.
Bunner returned to his car where he called 911 to admit to his crime. “I want to turn myself in for the murder of my ex-girlfriend Jolee Callan that happened just a little while ago on Cheaha Mountain,” he said in a calm voice. He then waited on the side of the road for the police to arrive. It didn’t take long for police to find Jolee Callan’s body. Bunner was coated in her blood and was quickly arrested and charged with her murder, for which he pleaded not guilty.
On July 13, 2017, Bunner pleaded guilty to Jolee Callan’s murder, though his attorneys pleaded with the courts for leniency, claiming that there was evidence he lived with a mental illness. The judge, however, was not swayed. Bunner was sentenced as an adult and got 52 years in prison.

Episode 181 Trammel Trailhead Pinhoti Trail
Episode 181 Trammel Trailhead Pinhoti Trail Oh boy, I had more fun than I expected on the Trammel Trailhead! This trail had no reviews and was somewhat hidden. Very awesome place and I found some really cool bugs!!!
Today I went out to the Trammel Trailhead Pinhoti Trail in the Talladega National Forest. This trail showed up on google maps and had no reviews and little information, so I thought it was the best place to go! There was afternoon rain forecasted, so I went out early to get a good hike in before the rain started.
I was…

After a long bit of research on both the art of camping and the pinhoti trail, I decided to embark on my first camping trip. I had hiked a particular section of trail east of the Dugger Mountain Wilderness Area several times, and knew of a field several miles out by a lake that would provide quite a bit of serenity and an…

Day 4 Pinhoti Trail - Today was one of those days that sneaks up on you. There were no big climbs, no terrain too tough, and no great source of adversity. But at the end of the day I am quite tired. There were lots of quick climbs and descents, an energy sucking humid heat, and a couple mistakes with water. The day unofficially ended with well over 7,000’ of elevation gain. The heat didn’t necessarily get to me, but caused me to intake fluids quicker than I usually do. In a couple instances I finished all my water and had to log some dry miles. I didn’t experience true discomfort as I have on a fifteen mile stretch through Montana in 95 degree heat, but it did effect my energy. At the Mr of the day I just dropped. It was a good day overall with views of lakes, meadows and green forests. I was even able to take one of my notorious naked plunges into a lake today and found a towel in a shelter to dry off. The route and this side of Alabama have been pretty eye opening. My stereotypes for this part of our country’s wilderness have evaporated and I have enjoyed it thoroughly. Tomorrow I will enter Georgia. Miles 40.7 #DoEpicShit (at Alabama) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx9ypEaFwTZ/?igshid=15l1k1ny21n3e

Pinhoti Trail
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pinhoti Trail. February 09-February 22, 2021. Alabama/Georgia. 108 miles.
The Pinhoti Trail: missed flight, bad weather, scary encounters with loose dogs, gnarly creek crossings, very long road walks, and too much money spent.
The fun times: shelter hopping, lots of joking around, burger king, and the nice reward of a few days of sun light.
Although we bailed on this hike, I don’t really regret it. I did not have the experience I was hoping for and was a bit miserable having wet feet all day and going to sleep cold. Not to mention going way over my budget in a very short amount of time. We just did this hike at the wrong time of the year.

Episode 174 Cheaha Mountain
Episode 174 Cheaha Mountain Woohoo I made it to the tallest point in Alabama.
Tumblr media
On this episode, I traveled to Cheaha Mountain to see what the highest point in Alabama looked like. My first stop was outside of the state park at the Cheaha Trail Head for a morning walk. I thought the Cheaha Trail Head might go up to the park, but the path was the Pinhoti trail and went down the mountain. After walking for…
