Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE) 2017 has attracted over 15,000 visitors, organisers announced at the events conclusion on Saturday.
Held under the theme ‘Once upon a time… luxury,’ the six-day show had visitors and exhibitors alike agreeing it was an exceptional experience. Precious jewels and time pieces from over 400 brands were shown and sold by 40 exhibitors. Meanwhile, unique visitor experiences enabled more than 500 people to delve into the world of artisanship, creating special memories at watch-making workshops by Objectif Horlogerie and portraiture sessions at Studio Harcourt.
Ahmed Al Obaidli, Director of Exhibitions, Qatar Tourism Authority, commented on the success of the show, “DJWE this year has told its visitors wonderful stories of luxury and history, and we are proud to count DJWE as one of our own success stories; a testament to the potential that the business events sector in Qatar holds. We owe this success entirely to the patronage of His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani. Thanks to His Excellency’s support, and to the professionalism and creativity of all our partners and exhibitors, we have enjoyed an exceptional start to this year’s calendar of exhibitions and business events, and we look forward to sharing more successes with our visitors throughout the rest of 2017. I must also express our heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Interior and the General Customs Authority for facilitating the entry of all the elements needed to make this show complete.”
Held at Doha Exhibition and Conference Centre (DECC) in the heart of West Bay, the spacious venue enabled Qatar’s premier retailers to bring creative flair to their exhibition pavilions – taking exhibition-goers on a remarkable journey of art, elegance and legacy.
Bader Abdullah Al-Darwish, Chairman and Managing Director of Darwish Holding, commented: “We are honored to be part of the fourteenth edition of the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition, an event that has become the highlight of the calendar for the watches and jewellery sector in Qatar and reflects the country’s status as a world-class destination.”
He continued, “This year, Fifty One East is proud to stand hand in hand with the Young Qatari Designers initiative. It has always been essential to us that we help realise their ambitions. They are the base for the economic and social development of Qatar.”
Sharing her experience of the show, Dana Al Fardan, Vice President of Alfardan Jewellery, said, “Since the first edition of the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition, Alfardan Jewellery has been keen to support the show and exceed visitor expectations by showcasing the most exclusive and unique high-end brands in the watches and jewellery industry.”
Discussing their participation this year’s show, Jamil Al Majed, Vice Chairman, Al Majed Jewellery said: “This edition of DJWE has brought us new visitor experiences, raised the profile of Qatar and contributed to the nation’s economic growth. We are honored to be part of this world-class event.”
Aman Shahani, Director of Communications, Amiri Gems, commented, “It is always a great pleasure to be part of DJWE. This premier event shines a spotlight on the region’s expanding portfolio of brands, which includes innovative new brands and luxury international jewellery houses from across the globe.”

Speaking on behalf of the collective of Young Qatari Designers, Nada Al Sulaiti, Founder of Hairaat, said. “Dreams do come true: that is what we have learnt from this promising initiative. We thank His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, for his support and we promise to do our best for Qatar. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Qatar Tourism Authority and the sponsors for facilitating this.”
Brands at DJWE unveiled special events at their booths: Swiss diamond house, Mouawad, revealed a USD 3.5 million jewellery box encrusted with diamonds, sapphires and lapis lazuli, which was certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s most valuable jewellery box. Meanwhile Robert Wan, House of Pearls offered ‘Pearlsonality tests’ that enabled participants to discover which pearls suited their character.
Attendees were also able to get the expert services of Artcurial, the famous French Auction house who provided watch valuations, helping visitors to build their own watch collection.

Hosting four to five complimentary watchmaking sessions per day, watch specialists Objectif Horlogerie gave enthusiasts an insight into the precision and complexity of handcrafting each timepiece. Over the course of the exhibition more than 100 visitors were able to take part and leave with an accredited diploma commemorating their participation.

The 14th edition of Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition 2017 hosted a ladies’ breakfast this morning, inviting ladies of Doha to shop, meet brand representatives, and enjoy spending time together at this special event.
Among the stakeholders of the jewellery and watches industry are many talented women who are also taking part in DJWE. Established designers who founded their own jewellery labels, businesswomen taking on the legacy of their family business, young Qataris passionate about celebrating the country’s culture; and all of them can be met at DJWE.
New to this year’s edition are members of the ‘Young Qatari Designers’ initiative, which offers emerging local designers dedicated exhibition space for their collections , and includes Fajr Al Attiya (Trifoglio), Ghada Al Bouanain (Ghada Al Bouanian), Noor Al Fardan (Noudar), Nouf Al Meer (Nouf Jewellery), Sarah Al Hammadi (Sarah’s & Co), and Nada Al Sulaiti (Hairaat).
Al Sulaiti began the craft of jewellery making in 2008. “Knowledge is key”, she said, sharing advice with other young women dreaming of opening their own jewellery business. “Gain as much information about your craft and how to operate a business as you can, as it will take you places. I use Qatar as inspiration for my pieces as I want to show the country’s rich culture to the world. It’s important to do something you are passionate about.”
Beyond emerging talents, DJWE also features heritage brands, led by charismatic ladies. Specialists in handcrafted luxury pieces is the iconic international Egyptian brand, Azza Fahmy whose driving force are a mother and her two daughters. Together, they launched The Design School in Cairo to empower jewellery designers and entrepreneurs with the techniques to complement their skills and break into the industry.
Another family collaboration at the show are mother and daughter Suzanne and Patile Kalan from Los Angeles. The family named jewellery collection, Suzanne Kalan, is participating for the third year running at DJWE and showcases designs now exhibited in leading retailers, such as Nordstrom. The inspiration for the collection came from Suzanne, who wanted to spend more time at home when she became a mother, so began making a few pieces of jewellery. What started off as a small project has now turned into a successful family jewellery business, exhibiting and selling pieces all over the world.
Also at the exhibition is Fadia Al Zain, the great granddaughter of one of Bahrain’s earliest pearl merchants. Fadia is participating in DJWE as a jewellery designer and brand ambassador for the Robert Wan House of Pearls, presenting an exclusive Qatar pearl collection inspired by the Arabian Gulf’s pearling heritage and the sacrifices of brave divers.
Entry to DJWE 2017 is free (reserved to visitors above 12 years of age) and registration can be completed at the venue or online at www.djwe.qa. This year’s official DJWE partners, Qatar Airways and Shangri-La Doha, are offering travellers discounted rates to visit Qatar, explore the exhibition and discover the endless rich experiences the country has to offer.

In this edition, the esteemed Swiss watchmaker, Rolex, which Fifty One East represents since 1951, will charm visitors with many applauded designs from BASELWORLD 2016 including the ultimate Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona with its new Monobloc Cerachrom bezel in high-tech ceramic. Signature de CHANEL is the first High Jewellery collection entirely dedicated to the quilted pattern, which was so dear to Gabrielle CHANEL. She used to say “elegance is Line”, when giving greater fluidity and freedom to her silhouettes, which was the inspiration of this collection. Multiplying, it spins its web over the entire surface of the jewellery piece transforming it into a tactile material, making each piece follow the body’s every movement. One of the unique pieces which will be presented is the Les Éternelles de CHANEL “Signature Grenat” secret watch which won the “Jewelry’ category at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève ceremony in 2016.
Guests will be swooned by the TUDOR Heritage Black Bay family that is growing with the arrival of the Black Bay Bronze model, Black Bay 36 and the Black Bay Dark model with the latter having  a steel divers’ watch entirely in black steel fitted with a mechanical movement, developed, manufactured and assembled in-house. TUDOR will also present the new Pelagos model launched outside of BASERLWORLD targeted to the “left-handed”, with its winding stem on the left of the middle case so that it can be worn on the right wrist.
This year along with the sophisticated style of internationally renowned design houses, there is also a vast range of choices to suit more eclectic tastes with collections from emerging brands who have the same focus on quality and craftsmanship. Attendees can see captivating pieces from designers such as Pandora, Deaken & Francis, Lelune, leBebé, Takara and Speake-Marin.
Fifty One East will also shine a spotlight on remarkable local talents by proudly giving young Qatari designers the support to showcase their designs to the visitors in their own dedicated space. The young talents are Noor Al Fardan (of Noudar); Nada Al Sulaiti (of Hairaat); Sarah Al Hammadi (of Sarah’s & Co); Nouf Al Meer (of Nouf Jewellery); Fajr Al Attiya (of Trifoglio); and Ghada AlBuainain (of Ghada AlBuainain) – enabling up and coming jewellery designers to introduce their work to a local and international audience.
The marriage of old and new is a consistent theme for Fifty One East this year: to commemorate the store’s long heritage in Qatar, its exhibition pavilion will be complemented by a photo exhibition gallery that showcases significant moments in the retailer’s history – VIP guests can view exclusive snapshots of the company’s history that reveal major milestones such as the first Rolex landing in Qatar in 1951.

The exhibition brings the most impressive array of jewellery and accessory brands from across the globe to Qatar – enabling visitors to learn more about fine jewellery, unique watches, gemstones and diamonds and shop for attractive pieces that will enhance their own collections.
