I get the contest entrants for the Akron Hamburger Festival contest, and the strangers for the first eating contest -- but surely Archie knows he has no chance and that battling Jughead is futile.

These are alternate covers of the 182nd issue of “Archie’s Pal Jughead”. As you can see, after an eating contest, Jughead sports a bloated belly (you can even see his belly button).
I haven’t been able to find the issue itself. I got curious because this cover is related to the first story inside, “Chompin’ Champion”. Basically, Jughead and his friends go to the National Hamburger Festival (Akron, Ohio), and tries to become the hamburger-eating champion so that Pop erases his debts.
This story sounds like a good material for some stuffing and bloating scene. Has any of you his or her hands on the issue? If so, could you share with us any potential kink-material?

We are Locksmith and will al lot of Links5
We take a look at the enigmatic origins of the world's most popular meal...the Hamburger!
If you look back a few thousands of years, you'll find that even the ancient Egyptians ate ground meat patties, and down through the ages ground meat has been shaped into patties and eaten all over the world under many different names. But exactly when and where the modern hamburger was born is much harder to pin down. Several folks over in the US - from New Haven, Connecticut, to Tulsa, Oklahoma - confidently claim their ancestors invented it.
As controversial as it is, the history of the hamburger is truly a story that has been run through the meat grinder. Legends say it began with the Mongols, who stashed scraps of beef, lamb or mutton under their saddles as they spanned the globe in their campaign to conquer the We are Locksmith and will al lot of Links :-)) known world, much as McDonald's has done in the last half century.
The softened meat was formed into flat patties, and after enough time spent sandwiched between the asses of man and beast, the meat became tender enough to eat raw - certainly a boon to swift-moving riders not keen to dismount.
When Genghis Khan's grandson, Kublai Khan, and his hordes invaded Moscow, they naturally brought their unique dietary ground meat with them. The Russians adopted it into their own cuisine with the name "Steak Tartare," (Tartars being their name for the Mongols). Over many years, Russian chefs adapted and developed this dish and refined it by adding chopped onions and raw eggs.
Later, as global trade picked up, seafarers brought this idea back to the port city of Hamburg, Germany, where the Deutschvolk decided to mold it with breadcrumbs into a steak shape and cook it, making something that, outside of Hamburg, was referred to as "Hamburg steak," a dish now most popular today, in of all places, Japan, where almost every menu lists it under Western fare as "steak cooked in the Hamburg style" or "hanbagu."
But enough fishing in European and Asian waters; let's cut bait here. Somehow ground beef gets to America. Somehow it's put on a bun. But by whom? Surely, the historical record should become clearer once we land on American shores. Sadly, it doesn't.
While some have written that the first American hamburger (actually Hamburger Steak) was served in 1834 at Delmonico's Restaurant, New York City, this oft-quoted origin is not based on the original Delmonico menu but rather a facsimile, which was debunked; the published facsimile could not possibly be correct, as the printer of the purported original menu was not even in business in 1834!
If a ground beef patty served between two slices of bread is a hamburger, then credit goes to Charlie Nagreen of Seymour, Wisconsin, who, at the age of 15, sold hamburgers from his ox-drawn food stand at the Outagamie County Fair. He went to the fair and set up a stand selling meatballs.
Business wasn't good and he quickly realised that it was because meatballs were too difficult to eat while strolling around the fair.
In a flash of innovation, he flattened the meatballs, placed them between two slices of bread and called his new creation a hamburger. He was known to many as "Hamburger Charlie." He returned to sell hamburgers at the fair every year until his death in 1951, and he would entertain people with his guitar and mouth organ and this jingle:
"Hamburgers, hamburgers, hamburgers hot; onions in the middle, pickle on top. Makes your lips go flippity flop."
The town of Seymour is so certain about this claim that it calls itself the "Home of the Hamburger," holds the record for the world's largest hamburger, and hosts a hamburger festival every year.
To be fair, though, descendants of county fair concessionaire Frank Menches, and If If restaurateur Louis Lassen, also claim their ancestors invented the hamburger - served on bread - in 1892 and 1900, respectively.
Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, claims to have invented our favourite meal. From its website: "One day in the year 1900 a man dashed into a small New Haven luncheonette and asked for a quick meal that he could eat on the run. Louis Lassen, the establishment's owner, hurriedly sandwiched a broiled beef patty between two slices of bread and sent the customer on his way, so the story goes, with America's first hamburger."
This claim is countered by the family of Frank and Charles Menches from Akron, Ohio, who now operate a small chain called, not surprisingly, Menches Bros., and claim that their great-grandfather Charles and his brother Frank invented the dish while travelling in a concession circuit at fairs, race meetings, and farmers' picnics in the Midwest.

Single Review: "White Man’s World” by Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit
Music is at its best when it’s touching on the sensitive subjects. The topical ones that people tend to shy away from discussing publicly or even all together, either important social or political issues that, while uncomforting, need to be discussed out in the open. It’s starting some sort of dialogue about topics of such things that allow people to gain perspective and perhaps even come to a new understanding on the issues; and the most recent single from Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit’s The Nashville Sound (out June 16th via Southeastern Records) serves as a vessel for the singer to address his personal views on race and even gender in the U.S.. The “dreaded” term “white privilege” is never mentioned, though that’s precisely what so much of the song is hinting at. “I'm a white man living in a white man's town…”, “I'm a white man living on a white man's street…”, “I'm a white man living in a white man's nation…”. Those are a few of the lines that open up some of the verses, Isbell discussing the entitlements that comes with that, even if it’s from things few even think about. “…I've got the bones of the red man under my feet. The highway runs through their burial grounds…” may well be the most striking couple of lines in the whole song, an aspect few may even consider nearly a couple of centuries out from the atrocities committed against the Native Americans, though it’s an outlook everyone should take into consideration. In regards to more modern racial tensions, “White Man’s World” impressively navigates a fine line of being aware how new a thing such as equality is, stressing the importance of that without ever exuding any feeling of shame over it. Nor should there be, because no one alive today should be held accountable or blamed for the actions of their ancestors, yet there does needs to be a conscious effort to continue progressing and striving for full equality.
Isbell uses his wife (and band mate) as an example of gender inequality (“…Momma wants to change that Nashville sound, but they're never gonna let her”), while their daughter helps represent a certain degree of fear in the future, knowing she’ll grow up in a world that is more generous towards the opposite sex. All of that is brought home by what almost assuredly sprung from the results of America’s last election cycle, those verses serving as the book ends for the song, so to speak – reaffirming Isbell’s view that this is a white man’s nation. While calling attention to some of the ignorance that still plagues the system, Isbell also offers up what could become a rallying cry of sorts in helping to fix it, the chorus centering around the fact that everyone is part of the same race, the human race, all sharing much more in common than what can be seen on a superficial level. “There's no such thing as someone else's war. Your creature comforts aren't the only things worth fighting for. You're still breathing, it's not too late. We're all carrying one big burden, sharing one fate.” The idea could easily even be construed as naïve, though it’s so simple that it makes too much sense. Musically, “White Man’s World” is just as transfixing, a steady, deep drum beat setting a mostly slower pace that allows the listener to take everything in. It’s behooving of it, the moody guitars and occasional use of the piano; the breakdown proving to be the most engrossing part, the soulful riffs adding to the emotion, while the fiddle creates a bit of a Celtic vibe at times, adding an extra flare to the track. Whether you agree with the sentiments of it or not, “White Man’s World” is an unbiased look at the world, at least in accordance to how Jason Isbell views it. It succeeds in creating a sort of dialogue and offers up some valid points for listeners to mull over. There’s no sort of agenda that it’s pushing, other than the fact that we as people need to do better to make things more inclusive, and furthermore that men need to use their station to make that happen. Contributing Op-Ed Writer: Designing a More Inclusive City

Contributing Op-Ed Writer: Designing a More Inclusive City
“The Arsenal of Exclusion and Inclusion,” a forthcoming book by Tobias Armborst, Daniel D’Oca and Georgeen Theodore, who lead the architecture, planning and research collective Interboro, refers to such things — which include cul-de-sacs, cold water, “No Loitering” signs, the Fair Housing Act — as “weapons.” They are the policies, practices and physical artifacts used by planners, policy makers, developers, real estate brokers, community activists and others to draw, redraw or erase the lines that divide us.
“It really is a war out there,” says Ms. Theodore, who explains that the use of the term “weapons” is meant to show that it’s a fight — while also highlighting the agency of the people who can wield these weapons for good or bad.
Once you first notice the sort of weapons “Arsenal” discusses, you can’t stop noticing them: those seemingly decorative “anti-homeless” spikes installed on the exterior ledges of buildings, benches with metal armrests set close together to prevent anyone from lying down, even classical music piped through outdoor speakers to deter teenagers from congregating in front of convenience stores.
Photo
Benches often feature “armrests” that can make benches more accessible for the elderly and people with disabilities. These armrests also deter the homeless from sleeping in public spaces. With the Archisuit, Sarah Ross, an artist, creates something that allows the wearer to “fit into, or onto, structures designed to deny them.” Credit Interboro, left; Sarah Ross
None of this is illegal, and collectively we seem resigned to it. These are subtle gestures, but they’re becoming ubiquitous. (There are many far less subtle examples, such as the “pee paint” deployed in cities like Hamburg and San Francisco, which makes urine bounce back at the offending urinator.)
Ms. Theodore recounted that Heinrich Zille, the early-20th-century illustrator and chronicler of life in the Berlin tenements, once said something like “You can kill a man with an apartment as with an ax.” The same could probably be said about a map: 1930s residential security maps (through redlining) cut off entire neighborhoods from investment, rigging the game against those neighborhoods’ mainly nonwhite residents.
The fact that life expectancy in Baltimore’s poorest ZIP codes is about 20 years shorter than in the richest ones, Ms. Theodore says, “is certainly not the result of ‘bad choices’ on the part of poorer residents, but is the direct result of earlier planning decisions. So, yes, space matters, and sometimes it is being used as a weapon.”
Tools of exclusion aren’t new, but we are gaining a much more comprehensive understanding of the innumerable ways they are being deployed. Richard Rothstein’s recent book “The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America,” for example, shows how policy pursued by the federal government after World War II was designed to subsidize the development of suburbs on a condition that the homes be sold only to white families and that deeds prohibited resale to African-Americans.
Mr. Rothstein’s writing is measured, but everything he relates is chilling in its deliberateness and intent. Page after page reveals the extent to which segregation was implemented, resulting in the divisiveness that so characterizes us today.
“The Arsenal” goes less deep but broader, addressing private, public and shared spaces. A series of essays by Interboro and in-the-trenches contributors show that the ways we plan and design our built environment, and allow (or forbid) access to it, have a serious impact on everything from economic mobility to public health.

One entry describes the “Ugly Law,” a city ordinance created in Portland, Ore., in 1881. In 1916 a woman making a living selling newspapers on the street who was told by authorities that she was “too terrible a sight for the children to see” and given money to get out of town. A flurry of such laws were passed throughout the United States between 1867 and World War I, targeting those we would now refer to as disabled. More recently, “blood relative ordinances” have been proposed by white communities, requiring tenants to be related by blood to their landlords, as well as “kinship ordinances” that require prospective tenants to secure a letter of recommendation from a current resident.
We see variants of this everywhere these days. This past summer’s tourist crackdowns in Italy, for instance, were understandably intended to stem the tide of selfie sticks and Trevi-fountain-wading but also placed restrictions on so-called indecorous behavior, obstructing access to city centers to anyone officialdom deems undesirable.
Another entry in the book addresses the bike lane, which today is one of the most volatile flash points of civic life. Many believe bike lanes make a city more accessible, while others see them as a tool of gentrification.
Not all of these tools are exclusionary. In New York, Ms. Theodore says, “they also seem to stoke people’s imagination when it comes to devising new inclusionary tools to make the city livable for a greater number of people.”
She also cites limited-equity co-ops, naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs) and rent control as “accidental” inclusionary tools, things that weren’t designed to be inclusionary but end up making the city accessible for a greater number of people. The flat transit fare is another example. “All subway trips, whether you’re traveling three blocks or 38 miles, cost the same set price of $2.75,” Ms. Theodore notes.
So what can we do as citizens? To begin, as the Interboro team suggests, start noticing these barriers to inclusion. Make small gestures that can have a big impact.
Involving communities in the process is a clear way to err on the side of inclusion. Take your cue from a great group like Build a Better Block and get your neighbors out in the streets: Place exhibits and pop-up stores in vacant storefronts, host a street party. Actions like these can even help to change restrictive zoning: When Build a Better Block’s Jason Roberts first closed off a street for a festival, he and his team placed signs everywhere saying that their interventions were in violation of existing codes. They then did a walk-through with City Council members, who, recognizing the absurdity of many of the regulations, later worked to change them.
Take action to make others feel welcome. Support (with votes, dollars, your presence at community meetings) practices designed to build more accessible towns, cities and suburbs — things like community land trusts, inclusionary zoning and projects such as the recently opened Exchange House, a vacant house in Akron, Ohio, that was converted into a cultural hostel and gathering space. It provides temporary housing plus health and social services and programs for the neighborhood’s immigrant community. Another great effort? On Friday, the Gehl Institute announced the Public Life Data Protocol, which aims to develop a common language around public spaces so that they can be better designed for those who use them. (They’re working with San Francisco’s planning department to reimagine the Civic Center Plaza, by the way. Seating will be part of the plan, along with data the protocol collects — from all users of the plaza.)
Inequality is escalating, and these spaces make that reality visible. It doesn’t have to continue this way. Everyone has the potential to act and, in a way, to be the designer of his or her environment. This is a call to action.

Single Review: "If We Were Vampires” by Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit
Upon hearing the title "If We Were Vampires”, one might be certain that there’s some sort of humor to be found in what is the latest single from The Nashville Sound (out June 16th via Southeastern Records), though one listen is all it takes to realize it’s one of the most sincere and painfully self-aware songs that Jason Isbell has crafted. It’s beauty is found in that honesty and the acknowledgment of the passage of time, bordering on being poignant and even morbid, yet never totally committing to such simple emotions, instead transcending to become something more grand, much like the true love that’s alluded to in the lyrics. In it Isbell touches on the things that are appealing about his spouse, the deeper characteristics that are admired and respected, though is quick to profess that genuine love goes much deeper than that. Instead, focus is put on the beauty that is to be found in the fact that nothing can last forever, the fact that everything, including love, is destined for the same fate as every living creature, and how knowing it will end should push one to savor it all the more. Make the most of the experience and enjoy every last second you’re able to spend with the person you care for.
“It's knowing that this can't go on forever. Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone. Maybe we'll get forty years together, but one day I'll be gone. Or one day you'll be gone.” That chorus says it perfectly, springing from the mind of a man who (seemingly) has come to terms with their mortality and is keenly aware of how the end game will play out: either being left alone or leaving his wife alone. Those are the type of traits that define truly excellent songwriting - conveyed marvelously in this instance - Isbell briefly speculating on what love would be like for immortals (“If we were vampires and death was a joke we'd go out on the sidewalk and smoke…”) before quickly deeming it near impossible to truly appreciate something if there wasn’t some sort of fragility to go along with it. “…Maybe time running out is a gift…” he wonders, posing it as a question almost, and hitting the nail on the head with that sentiment, understanding that is what makes the human experience just that: an experience. The gentle picking of an acoustic guitar adds immensely to the strong, heartfelt emotions already portrayed by the lyrics, the tender ballad quickly rising to be one of the best songs Isbell has ever penned, further cementing him as one of this generations most revered singer/songwriters.
