Ajit Agarkar on Choosing Suryakumar Yadav Over Hardik Pandya as India's T20I Captain
Ajit Agarkar, the Chairman of the senior selection committee, recently shed light on the decision to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain over Hardik Pandya. According to Agarkar, Suryakumar was chosen due to his consistent availability and impressive T20 credentials, while fitness concerns played a role in Hardik’s exclusion from the captaincy role.
Tumblr media
The Decision-Making Process
Agarkar explained the rationale behind selecting Suryakumar Yadav, emphasizing his suitability and skill set for the role. “He is one of the deserving candidates. He is one of the best T20 batters in the world. We feel that Surya has all the necessary qualities to be a good captain. We wanted a captain who is likely to play all the games,” Agarkar said during a press conference. He highlighted the importance of having a captain who is consistently present and can lead the team effectively over time.
Hardik Pandya’s Fitness Concerns
While acknowledging Hardik Pandya’s invaluable contributions to the team, Agarkar pointed out that fitness issues were a significant factor in the decision. “As far as Hardik is concerned, he is still a very important player. And that’s what we want him to be, those skillsets are hard to find,” Agarkar stated. He elaborated that managing Hardik’s fitness has been challenging, and the selectors preferred a captain who would be more consistently available.
Role Clarity and Future Plans
Agarkar emphasized the open communication with players regarding their roles and future plans. “We speak to every player about whether their role has changed. And yeah, we’ve spoken to him [Hardik]…” he said. This approach ensures that players are aware of their standing and expectations within the team.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Role
Currently, Suryakumar Yadav is being considered exclusively for the T20I format. “At this point, Surya is being seen just as a T20 player, not being considered for ODIs,” Agarkar clarified, indicating a focused approach to utilizing Suryakumar’s strengths in the shortest format of the game.
Clarification on Ravindra Jadeja
Agarkar also addressed rumors about Ravindra Jadeja’s exclusion from the ODI squad. He clarified that Jadeja was not dropped but was rested considering the upcoming Test workload. “Jadeja was not dropped from ODIs. The decision was made considering the Test workload coming up soon after,” he explained, assuring that Jadeja remains a key player in India’s plans.
Conclusion
The decision to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain underscores the selectors’ strategy of prioritizing consistent availability and form. While Hardik Pandya remains an essential player, fitness considerations have led to a more strategic distribution of responsibilities. As the Indian cricket team moves forward, clear communication and role management will continue to be pivotal in maintaining a balanced and effective squad.
Stay tuned for more updates and insights into the Indian cricket team’s evolving dynamics!

India's Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma spoke at length to the top bosses in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and chief selector Ajit Agarkar in a review meeting held on Saturday. India head coach Gautam Gambhir was also present in the meeting as the BCCI top brass sought response from the Indian team management over the recent run of results, particularly the 1-3 Border-Gavaskar series defeat to Australia and the 0-3 home sweep against New Zealand. In the meeting, it has been reported, that Rohit expressed his intentions of remaining the team's captain for a few more 'months'.
Questions over Rohit's long-term Test future intensified over the course of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, particularly because of his form with the bat. Rohit even decided to bench himself for the final match in Sydney, though India lost that encounter too.
During the meeting with BCCI, where Agarkar and Gambhir also expressed their views, Rohit is said to have told the board that he wants to remain the team's captain for a few more months. The BCCI, meanwhile, has been asked by Rohit to keep searching for a new captain...Read To More

The Champions Trophy final judgment on Bumrah's availability on February 11
Tumblr media
On February 11, when the final squads must be submitted to the ICC, India will make a definitive choice over Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the Champions Trophy, despite ongoing doubts about his fitness.
According to information obtained by ESPNcricinfo, Bumrah recently underwent a back scan at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Before a decision is made, the medical staff of the BCCI will now consult with the selectors and the management of the India squad.
The Champions Trophy unofficial 15-man roster was named on January 18 and featured Bumrah. However, he has been unable to participate in India's final ODI series against England, which takes place on February 19. Although it was anticipated that Bumrah would be able to play the third ODI on Wednesday in Ahmedabad, he has instead traveled to Bengaluru.
Bumrah was not "likely to be fit for the first couple of games" in the England ODI series, according to information given by the BCCI medical team at the time, chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated in January when he announced the provisional selection for the Champions Trophy. Bumrah was "asked to offload for five weeks" from bowling, according to Agarkar, before having further back scans performed in the first week of February.
Since he was unable to bowl during Australia's second innings of the Sydney Test in early January, Bumrah has not participated in a game. It is known that he needed to relax for five weeks due to a stress reaction in his back.
Harshit Rana, who participated in the first two ODIs against England, may be India's replacement if they believe Bumrah won't play in the Champions Trophy. However, India may decide to keep Bumrah in the 15 and replace him later, pending ICC consent, if there is a chance he will become available in the later stages of the competition. Any substitution after February 11 requires the technical committee of the tournament's approval.
India, which is in Group A of the Champions Trophy with Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand, will play all of its matches in Dubai since the Indian government has denied them permission to visit Pakistan, the tournament's official host. On February 20, they play Bangladesh to start the campaign. On February 23, they play Pakistan, and on March 2, they play New Zealand.

[ad_1] Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma (PC: X) Nagpur, February 6 and Rohit Sharma – does the association strike a chord? The Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium was the venue of his heartbreak then, in 2010. Circa 2025, and Nagpur is set to host the India ODI captain at a time when his international career is at crossroads. Yes, it’s coincidental that the first ODI between India and England here is on February 6. But the date allows the opportunity of a throwback. On that dreaded February 6 morning 15 years ago, Rohit had hurt his ankle during a practice session 15 minutes before the start of a Test against South Africa that was set to be his debut. He had to wait another three years to play his first Test. But Nagpur hasn’t always been unkind to him. It is the place (Bansod near Nagpur) where he was born before his family shifted base to Mumbai. And the VCA Stadium has always opened its heart and hearth to the son of the soil. Rohit boasts a Test average of 82.33, including two hundreds, at this venue. His ODI average here is 68.00, embellished with a century. The 37-year-old needs to draw inspiration from the past to take care of his present and the future. On Tuesday, as the Indian team hit the nets, a picture of Rohit went viral on social media. Images can be photoshopped, but going by how it appeared, the skipper looked a bit out of shape. Close on its heels popped up another image – Virat Kohli flexing his biceps. The keyboard warriors from both sides – the Rohitians and the Viratians – sprung into action and turned social media into social disgrace. Kohli, too, is walking a tightrope, but ODI is different format and he is not at the receiving end of the trickle-down effect of his red-ball failure as yet, unlike Rohit. The latter probably can’t afford to fail, especially in the Champions Trophy. Before that he will have to use the three-match series against England as a springboard to set himself up for the ICC event. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Rohit Sharma (L) and Ajit Agarkar (R). (PC: X.com) India’s previous ODI series was six months ago in Sri Lanka and amid the batting implosions, and a series defeat, Rohit was the sole exception. He scored 157 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 144.44. His high-octane batting approach, en vogue since the 2023 World Cup, has served him very well in white-ball cricket, although it has affected his defensive game in Tests. A return to the ODI fold might make his mind uncluttered and allow him to move into a better headspace. Fielding restrictions in the shorter formats could work to his advantage. “I think both Rohit and Virat, they add so much value to the dressing room,” Gautam Gambhir had parped at the BCCI annual awards a few days ago. “They add so much value to Indian cricket as well. They have got to play a massive role in the Champions Trophy.” The head coach added: “I have said it before as well, those guys are so hungry, they want to play for the country. They have the passion to play for the country and deliver for the country.” Irrespective of how their dressing-room equation was in Australia, the coach and the captain need to be on the same page for India to have a successful Champions Trophy campaign. For Rohit, this ODI team is his baby and he should assert his authority. To do that, however, he needs runs under his belt. It’s probably now or never. Virat Kohli Suffers Neck Injury as BCCI Issues Strict Order to Play Ranji Trophy
Tumblr media
Ranji Trophy 2025: The suspense over Virat Kohli's return to the Ranji Trophy is almost clear amidst the swirling rumors about his availability for the upcoming matches of Delhi in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25.
Kohli has been named in Delhi’s probable squad for their crucial Ranji clash against Saurashtra on January 23. However, Virat Kohli has reportedly suffered a neck sprain that was severe enough to require him to take an injection, raising doubts about his availability for the Ranji clash in Rajkot.

DDCA awaits update as Virat Kohli battles neck sprain before Saurashtra clash in Ranji Trophy 2024-25
But surprisingly, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) claimed that the state body has not received any official update on Kohli's condition. However, Virat Kohli is likely to be included in Delhi's squad with "subject to availability."
A source was quoted as saying by TOI: “Virat Kohli had a neck sprain and even took an injection for the same. There is a possibility of him skipping the first of the two Ranji Trophy games left, and a clear picture could come if the DDCA selectors are given an update.”
On the other hand, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has confirmed that he will play in Delhi's next Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra. However, some DDCA officials are hoping that Pant will play in the final Ranji Trophy 2024-25 game against Railways at home.

Virat Kohli likely to train with Delhi squad in Rajkot
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli’s participation in Delhi's upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024-25 encounter against Saurashtra remains uncertain, but there are high chances of him being named in the squad for the match. It is being said that Kohli might join the Delhi cricket team in Rajkot and train with them.
The Delhi squad is set to depart on January 20, with two practice sessions scheduled before the match in Rajkot. According to a senior DDCA official, Kohli is likely to be named in the Delhi squad, but with “subject to availability” alongside his name.
However, Kohli’s case will become clearer after a key meeting at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on January 17. This meeting will be held between the men’s senior selection committee and coach Sarandeep Singh, who will finalize the Ranji squad after a net session with the probables.

Will the BCCI give Virat Kohli any relief after releasing the strict guidelines?
Meanwhile, the BCCI has made it mandatory for all international players to take part in domestic matches to remain eligible for India selection and a central contract. So, it will be interesting to see whether Kohli returns to Ranji cricket after 12 years if he gets clearance.
However, BCCI can give relaxation to those only in "extraordinary circumstances" with approval from Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the senior selection committee, and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Since Kohli retired from T20I cricket and the ODI series against England is two weeks away, the former Indian skipper is highly likely to be asked to play for Delhi if his neck problem is not that severe, especially given his terrible form with the bat on the recent Australia tour.
