Themes and Trends in 2024
While Bollywood has always had a mix of genres, some prevailing themes and trends in 2024 reflect the evolving tastes of audiences and the industry’s response to global cinematic developments. Here are some key trends to watch out for in this year’s new Hindi movies:
1. Social Issues and Realism
More filmmakers are delving into narratives that explore social and political issues, creating a blend of entertainment and awareness. Films like Article 15 (2019) set the trend for cinema tackling caste, religion, and inequality, and in 2024, movies continue to take on these subjects. From biopics like Sam Bahadur to dramas centered on migration like Dunki, Bollywood is increasingly focusing on stories that resonate with real-world issues, sparking conversations across society.
2. Pan-India Appeal
Bollywood movies are increasingly aiming for a pan-India appeal by incorporating elements that can connect with audiences from all over the country, transcending language and cultural barriers. Films like RRR (2022) set the stage for Hindi cinema to compete on a national level with films from the South Indian film industries. In 2024, many new Hindi movies include multilingual releases or feature actors from other industries to cater to a broader audience base.
3. Strong Female Characters
The portrayal of women in Bollywood is undergoing a significant shift, with more films focusing on strong female protagonists who break away from traditional stereotypes. Movies like Raazi (2018) and Thappad (2020) paved the way for female-driven narratives, and 2024 is no different. Actresses like Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, and Kriti Sanon are leading films that center around women’s empowerment, and more directors are choosing to focus on female-led stories.
4. Technological Advancements and Visual Effects
Bollywood is increasingly embracing advanced filmmaking techniques, including cutting-edge visual effects (VFX). Films like Brahmastra (2022) showed the potential of Indian cinema to match the visual grandeur of Hollywood productions, and 2024 sees even more integration of VFX, CGI, and motion-capture technology. Big-budget films, especially in the action and fantasy genres, are pushing the envelope when it comes to special effects.
5. OTT Platforms and Experimental Cinema
With the rise of digital streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ Hotstar, Bollywood filmmakers are exploring more experimental and unconventional content. This trend is visible in 2024’s slate of films, where filmmakers take greater creative risks, making movies with more nuanced narratives, darker themes, and complex characters. Streaming platforms provide filmmakers the space to experiment, leading to a diversification of content in terms of genre and tone.
Key Actors and Directors Dominating Bollywood in 2024
The Hindi film industry in 2024 is driven by a mix of seasoned actors, new talent, and visionary directors. Some of the major stars and filmmakers making waves this year include:
1. Shah Rukh Khan
Even after decades in the industry, Shah Rukh Khan remains the King of Bollywood. With films like Jawan and Dunki in 2024, SRK proves that his stardom is still unmatched, and he continues to draw in huge crowds, both domestically and internationally. His films often combine commercial appeal with thoughtful storytelling, and his ability to adapt to changing cinematic trends keeps him relevant in every era.
2. Alia Bhatt
Alia Bhatt has solidified her place as one of the most talented actresses in Bollywood. In 2024, she continues to shine with a mix of commercial and critically acclaimed films. Her ability to portray both lighthearted and serious roles with ease makes her a favorite among filmmakers and audiences alike.
3. Rajkumar Hirani
Rajkumar Hirani is one of the most respected filmmakers in the industry, known for his ability to combine humor with socially relevant messages. His films have universal appeal, and Dunki is expected to follow the tradition of his previous works, leaving audiences entertained while also reflecting on important issues.
4. Rohit Shetty
Known for his mass entertainers, Rohit Shetty remains a key player in Bollywood. His cop universe and action comedies continue to attract a massive audience base. In 2024, Singham Again is expected to be another big hit, and Shetty’s expertise in creating action-packed spectacles remains unmatched.
Conclusion
Bollywood in 2024 is an industry in flux, adapting to new challenges, technologies, and audience expectations while staying true to its roots. With a diverse lineup of films, Hindi cinema is set to captivate both Indian and global audiences. Whether it’s the high-octane thrills of Tiger 4 and Baaghi 4, the social commentary of Dunki, or the emotional depth of Sam Bahadur, Bollywood’s offerings this year promise to be both entertaining and thought-provoking.
As the industry continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: Bollywood’s magic, with its signature blend of drama, emotion, and music, will continue to be a dominant force in the world of cinema. Part 3: ★ Highest Grosser of The Year from 1990 to 2020: Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan dominate, as Hrithik Roshan climbs the ladder!
Dec 29, 2020
In the first part of the highest grosser of the year series, Bollywood Hungama did an in-depth analysis of the actors with maximum highest grossing film of the year spanning 73 years from 1947 to 2020. While Salman Khan was crowned the biggest Bollywood superstar since independence with 10 highest grossers of the year, Dilip Kumar bagged the second spot with 9 films in the list, whereas Aamir Khan was third with 7 films in the list. Shah Rukh Khan on the other hand had 5 films in the list, while Hrithik Roshan was fast climbing the ladder of success with 4 highest grossers of the year in merely 20 years span. The top three stars contributed 26 of the total 73 highest grossers of the year, which in percentage terms is 35%. In the second part of the series, we came up with a detailed decade by decade analysis of stars fighting for the top spot in the respective decades from 1957 to 1989. Now, in the third and final part of this Bollywood Hungama exclusive, we are back with the number crunching analysis from 1990 till 2020. Interestingly, in a span of these 31 years (From 1989 till 2020), the three Khans – Salman Khan (10), Aamir Khan (7) and Shah Rukh Khan (5) – in total delivered 22 highest grossers of the year, whereas Hrithik Roshan delivered 4 more, leaving just 5 spots in three decades for some 25 plus actors of the industry to score the biggest hit of the year. Here’s a 3-decade analysis
1990 to 1999: Sunny Deol, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan take charge
In terms of sheer box-office pull, this decade was dominated by three names – Sunny Deol, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, though Anil Kapoor and Govinda too were going strong in terms of hit count this decade. While Deol delivered one highest grosser of the year this decade in Border, he maintained his supremacy with constant flow of releases. Ghayal (1990) too managed to surpass the collections of Dil, if we take reruns into account, taking his total to two films.
Salman on the other hand rose like a phoenix with Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989) and followed it up with three other highest grossers of the year in the 90s – Saajan, Hum Aapke Hai Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain.
Shah Rukh Khan was the biggest find of the 90s, particularly for the kind of consistency he showed at the box-office – both in terms of opening as well as lifetime collections. He delivered two highest grossers of the year in the 90s – Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He became a superstar within two years of arriving in the industry, and with every passing year, bettered his standing. As the 90’s came to an end, the trade already started to label Shah Rukh Khan alongside legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar. In-fact, in times to come, he became the biggest superstar India has ever seen in the overseas market (more on this later). Though Salman has a lead in terms of HGOTY in the 90s, the consistency gave Shah Rukh an edge over him for the top spot of 90s, with him and Sunny following suit. However, in terms of highest grossers of the year, Salman scored big, and without any doubts, it was in the 90s itself that he cemented his position as a superstar as he had some solid openers, massive blockbusters and big grossers under his kitty within 10 years in the industry. Sunny Deol on the other hand saw the lead in terms of sheer raw mass fan following in the 90s. Anil Kapoor and Govinda too had one HGOTY year in Beta (1992) and Aankhen (1993).
2000 to 2009: Shah Rukh Khan’s supremacy challenged by Hrithik Roshan
This decade saw a major turnaround of things, as Shah Rukh continued to scale new heights in the beginning, whereas Salman Khan was seeing a slight downfall due to controversies in the personal space, whereas Aamir Khan had taken a break from acting due to some issues in personal life following his divorce. While everyone thought that Shah Rukh Khan will be undisputed number one star of 00’s, there came Hrithik Roshan to challenge the supremacy and following the release of Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai, there was no looking back for him. He became a superstar overnight and just the second actor after Salman to make his debut with a highest grosser of the year. Till date, Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai is considered the biggest launch vehicle for a Bollywood actor, and one had to witness the euphoria surrounding Hrithik post his debut, to believe it. It marked the arrival of a superstar, probably the last of Hindi cinema. In the first seven years of this decade, Shah Rukh Khan delivered three highest grossers of the year in Devdas (2002), Veer Zaara (2004) and Om Shanti Om (2007), whereas Hrithik Roshan too had three highest grossers of the year in Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai (2000), Koi Mil Gaya (2003) and Dhoom 2 (2006). In-fact, in 2006, the top 2 grossers of the year (Dhoom 2 and Krrish) belonged to Hrithik. Towards the decade end, Aamir made a comeback and delivered back-to-back HGOTY in Ghajini (2008) and 3 Idiots (2009). Salman and Sunny Deol had one HGOTY each in No Entry and Gadar, with latter being the biggest grosser of all time in India. Akshay too was strong for a period of 3 years between 2006 and 2008, with back-to-back hits and bumper openers, however, none of his releases could find a place in the prestigious list of highest grosser of the year, and till date, though a major film star, he awaits his turn to open his account in this aspect. The decade belonged to Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.
2010 to 2020: The Salman Khan Era, with some cameo’s by Aamir Khan
It would not be wrong to say that the decade of 2010 to 2019 belonged to Salman Khan as the superstar delivered five highest grosser of the year – Dabangg (2010), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), along with three second highest grosser of the year – Ready (2011, overlapping with Bodyguard), Kick (2014) and Sultan (2016) – indicating that 7 of the 10 years belonged to him, an unheard phenomenon in Bollywood history, easily putting him in the list of all-time greats.
Aamir comes at the third spot with three highest grossers of the year, which all proved to be all time grossers – Dhoom 3 (2013), PK (2014) and Dangal (2016). 8 of the 10 years belonged to these two mighty Khans, dominating like no other decade post-Independence. Hrithik Roshan took the tally of his highest grosser of the year to 4 films with War becoming the highest grosser of 2019. He is just a film away to tie with Raj Kapoor, Dharmendra and Shah Rukh Khan, and all this within a period of 20 years. Ranbir Kapoor opened his account this decade with his first highest grosser of the year with Sanju (2018), and Ajay Devgn too, after an illustrious career of over 25 years, delivered his first highest grosser of the year with Tanhaji (2020).
To put the last 3 decades in a nutshell, Salman Khan (10 films) + Aamir Khan (7 films) + Shah Rukh Khan (5 films) topped the year 22 times since 1989, whereas Hrithik topped it 4 times since 2000 – Putting these 4 as the top 4 stars of Hindi cinema since the new millennium aka 2000. While the three Khans have at most 5 more years to continue as leading heroes until they reach the age of 60, Hrithik still has ample of gas left in his tank to keep climbing the ladder, and aim at the sky. Salman, Aamir and Shah Rukh can add a film or two more to their kitty and in the years to come. Given the current pattern of working adapted by the actors, it would be near impossible for anyone to reach the double-digit mark in terms of highest grosser of the year and dethrone Salman from the top spot with 10 films at the moment, which is highest for any actor in history of Hindi cinema. Aamir, with 7 films as biggest grosser of the year at present, however can aim at the second spot - a tie with Dilip Kumar, who has ended his career with 9 highest grossers of the year.

Kumail Nanjiani gets swole for Marvel’s Eternals, shares pics: ‘Never thought I’d post a thirsty shirtless’ - hollywood
Tumblr media
Pakistan-origin actor-comedian Kumail Nanjiani’s latest post, where he’s seen flaunting a muscular physique has set social media alight. Nanjiani has a new physique for upcoming Marvel superhero film The Eternals, reports aceshowbiz.com.He took to Instagram on Monday to post two shirtless shots showing off his perfect ripped body and made clear the transformation, for his role as Kingo in the star-studded comic book adaptation, took a full year of intense training and dieting.  View this post on Instagram I never thought I’d be one of those people who would post a thirsty shirtless, but I’ve worked way too hard for way too long so here we are. You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. I found out a year ago I was going to be in Marvel’s Eternals and decided I wanted to transform how I looked. I would not have been able to do this if I didn’t have a full year with the best trainers and nutritionists paid for by the biggest studio in the world. I’m glad I look like this, but I also understand why I never did before. It would have been impossible without these resources and time. So big thanks to @grantrobertsfit who started working with me at the beginning of the year and made me understand true physical pain for months and months. Then, once we started shooting, a massive thanks to @davidhigginslondon and his team (@ellispartridge, @thebeardypt, @tomcheesemanfitness) for training me almost every day and making me strong, limber and injury free. I can almost touch my toes now. (And thank you for forcing me to do cheat meals David.) Matthews Street Catering for their delicious and healthy meals. And finally, the biggest thanks goes to @emilyvgordon for putting up with me complaining and talking about only working out and dieting for the last year. I promise I’ll be interesting again some day. #thirstyshirtless (Photo by @markupson.) (edit: I left off one very important person: @lancecallahan who trained me for 6 years and helped me build the foundation I could use to do this. Thank you!) Bharat director Ali Abbas Zafar says he actually needs to work with Aamir, SRK, Ranbir and Varun, however ‘Bhai isn't leaving me'
http://tinyurl.com/yynsmntb Salman Khan’s Bharat — one of many largest and most anticipated movies this yr, is Ali Abbas Zafar’s third collaboration with the famous person after Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai. Firstpost caught up with the director for a free-wheeling chat about (amongst different issues) making Salman work tougher with every movie, adapting a Korean movie to an Indian context, his final minute casting of Katrina Kaif and the way ‘Bhai’ isn’t prepared to go away him. Excerpts: Salman Khan, is in any other case identified to be an informal actor, however for you he appears to go that further mile in terms of prepping up for the function. Earlier it was Sultan, then Tiger Zinda Hai and now Bharat. How come? (Laughs) Really he’s a really onerous working actor and each time I take a script to him there’s something very difficult for him to do. Even for me, I really feel that in the event you do easy stuff you may get very complacent. With SK (Salman Khan) once I go and inform him, ‘Sir, this time we must work even tougher as in comparison with what we did final time’, he enjoys it. He has his good days and dangerous days, he’s moody. However he enjoys the method. Ali Abbas Zafar. Picture from Fb How difficult was it adapting from a Korean movie? After Sultan, Salman gave me this DVD and mentioned, ‘Why do not you watch this? It is a quite simple story a few displaced household and a promise {that a} son makes to his father. The germ of the movie could be very Indian. However I needed to utterly rewrite the movie to suit it into the Indian context, and that too, in a mainstream Hindi movie. The movie is historical past and greater than that it’s an evolution of a full character. Salman’s character begins when he’s eight-nine years previous and he goes until he’s 72 years previous, so he has to play the identical individual in numerous age teams and but must be very in line with the story-line. At coronary heart, it’s a quite simple emotional story of a displaced household in partition however the impression of the story could be very excessive as a result of not solely do you see him, however you additionally see the nation change. Individuals round him change and the way these adjustments maintain impacting his life. So it’s a very difficult movie as an actor which he understood on the script degree. He has achieved an impressive job. The movie can be fairly difficult for me. It was like making six Salman Khan movies as a result of he’s there in six completely different seems. And since we’re capturing six or seven many years of his life, each decade turned a movie inside itself, each chapter has a starting, center and finish. So while you watch the movie, it’s such as you’re watching six movies inside one movie. Additionally, each chapter of his life is sort of a quick movie. Each chapter has some new character which comes and goes. It was like a nightmare…after which to maintain the emotional continuity going all through the movie was very difficult. However we’ve got additionally saved it mild and entertaining with lot of humor in it as a result of humor works with Salman, and also you additionally really feel for the drama. The movie is about within the center lessons of India which is a really vibrant social strata with lot of individuals round him. What was Salman’s response after watching the movie? When Salman doesn’t say something after watching his movie it means you’re on good grounds (Laughs). It is the identical with Salim (Khan) uncle. Each didn’t say something so I’m blissful. Was Salman affected person sufficient with the look and weight achieve and loss? Sure, he was. He’s nonetheless very unpredictable like he was from his very first movie with me, however now he has develop into little affected person and he understands that no matter preparation was occurring was occurring for the appropriate trigger and for the required impression from the movie. His oldest look is the best one and he has portrayed it within the coolest means. However he would say on a regular basis that what I used to be making him do. He would inform me that first you do that make-up, first you put on this beard and moustache and present me that previous look. Throughout Sultan he would inform me to put on the chaddi and are available into the mud (laughs). Did he have lot of questions for you? He has good days and dangerous days. Some days he won’t ask you something, whereas some days he would need to sit an additional hour and ask lot of questions whereas having his espresso, after which once more he would rise up and say, ‘Okay, now it’s achieved’. How has Salman advanced as an actor through the years? He’s a really versatile actor. He’s somebody who can do movies like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and likewise do a movie like Bharat and on the identical time additionally do a Chulbul Pandey. However folks do not have a look at him that means as a result of he doesn’t speak very significantly about his performing abilities. If he begins utilizing these heavy obligation phrases that I acquired into the character and I didn’t sleep for 2 days, folks would take him significantly. He is an outstanding actor and that’s the reason he has this large mass join. Many new data are being set with Avengers, Baahubali…after which Salman himself breaks his personal file. Is there a strain? Sure, there’ll at all times be strain with an enormous movie. Additionally it is a landmark movie. However someplace or the opposite we’re all very clear that if the movie is sweet, data will observe mechanically. So the thought whereas making the movie ought to solely be about placing your finest foot ahead to make one of the best movie on that day and that’s what we work in the direction of. And we’ve got at all times seen that if the movie is sweet it’d simply begin sluggish however finally it does lot of enterprise. That’s the strategy we normally take. Although your Tiger Zinda Hai was an enormous success, there may be additionally Salman’s Race 3 and Tubelight that didn’t meet the expectations. Does that fear you? I’m okay, I don’t suppose that may have an effect on something. Salman remains to be an enormous star, the form of buzz that Bharat has created with the trailer and the songs, is phenomenal. We have now been getting messages from commerce folks that the vibe of the movie is trying excellent. Now all of it boils right down to the content material and story. When the viewers finds that this movie is bringing one thing new, they’ll go for it. You clearly didn’t need Katrina Kaif as she and Salman had simply achieved TZH. Now that the movie is prepared for launch what are your ideas? Getting Katrina on board was a really aware choice. When Priyanka couldn’t do the movie for X motive, I instructed Katrina, “You learn the script however you must perceive one factor that I’m not going to vary something within the movie as a result of there’s a sure edge to Kumud Raina’s (performed by Katrina) character.” So when Katrina learn the script she understood why I don’t need to change something after which she labored backwards to get into the character for which she did lot of performing and language workshops and additional she was styled for the half. We began from the scratch and I believe her efficiency in Bharat will likely be properly appreciated as a result of it is vitally new for her and the viewers. You could have mentioned that the romantic scenes between Salman and Katrina comes very naturally… They actually look good collectively, so the issue is that you must write scenes which aren’t love scenes as a result of in the event you write love scenes then these will look very clichéd on each of them. So I try to write actual scenes that are about actual issues and actual conversations and mechanically simply with the way in which they have a look at one another it turns into a love scene. You’re already engaged on the third franchise of Tiger. Sure, I’ve form of narrowed down a narrative for the third instalment of Tiger franchise however we haven’t made any announcement but. I’ve shared that story with Salman and Adi (producer Aditya Chopra) and each are fairly excited. So as soon as Bharat will get out of my system, we are going to begin working in the direction of it. As a director what’s your tackle the business, how is it evolving? The monumental success of Raazi, Stree, Andhadhun, Badhaai Ho — the midsize movies that defied the field workplace guidelines. Content material pushed movies have at all times labored. Deewar, Lagaan…these have been all content material pushed movies. Good movie has solely labored as a result of it has a narrative, so let’s not begin calling story content material. Each time a director makes a movie which is new for its instances, is at all times going to work. Who’s your audience for Bharat? This can be a pan India movie, there isn’t a audience. From a seven-eight-year-old to a 100-plus, it has everybody within the movie. You could be eager to work with different actors as nicely? I actually need to work with Aamir, Shah Rukh, Akshay, Ajay Devgn, Ranbir, Varun, Arjun — they’re all excellent actors. You simply have to seek out the appropriate story to do with them after which all of it clicks, however proper now ‘Bhai’ (Salman) isn’t leaving me (laughs). ★ Bharat director Ali Abbas Zafar says he really wants to work with Aamir, SRK, Ranbir and Varun, but ‘Bhai is not leaving me !
Seema Sinha | Jun 02, 2019
Salman Khan’s Bharat — one of the biggest and most anticipated films this year, is Ali Abbas Zafar’s third collaboration with the superstar after Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai. Firstpost caught up with the director for a free-wheeling chat about (among other things) making Salman work harder with each film, adapting a Korean film to an Indian context, his last minute casting of Katrina Kaif and how ‘Bhai’ isn’t ready to leave him. Excerpts:
Salman Khan, is otherwise known to be a casual actor, but for you he seems to go that extra mile when it comes to prepping up for the role. Earlier it was Sultan, then Tiger Zinda Hai and now Bharat. How come?
(Laughs) Actually he is a very hard working actor and every time I take a script to him there is something very challenging for him to do. Even for me, I feel that if you do simple stuff you can get very complacent. With SK (Salman Khan) when I go and tell him, ‘Sir, this time we will have to work even harder as compared to what we did last time', he enjoys it. He has his good days and bad days, he is moody. But he enjoys the process.
How challenging was it adapting from a Korean film?
After Sultan, Salman gave me this DVD and said, 'Why don't you watch this? It's a very simple story about a displaced family and a promise that a son makes to his father. The germ of the film is very Indian. But I had to completely rewrite the film to fit it into the Indian context, and that too, in a mainstream Hindi film. The film is history and more than that it is an evolution of a full character.
Salman’s character starts when he is eight-nine years old and he goes till he is 72 years old, so he has to play the same person in different age groups and yet has to be very consistent with the story-line. At heart, it is a very simple emotional story of a displaced family in partition but the impact of the story is very high because not only do you see him, but you also see the nation change. People around him change and how these changes keep impacting his life. So it is a very challenging film as an actor which he understood on the script level. He has done an outstanding job.
The film is also quite challenging for me. It was like making six Salman Khan films because he is there in six different looks. And because we’re capturing six or seven decades of his life, every decade became a film within itself, every chapter has a beginning, middle and end. So when you watch the film, it’s like you’re watching six films within one film.
Also, every chapter of his life is like a short film. Every chapter has some new character which comes and goes. It was like a nightmare…and then to keep the emotional continuity going throughout the film was very challenging. But we have also kept it light and entertaining with lot of humor in it because humor works with Salman, and you also feel for the drama. The film is set in the middle classes of India which is a very colourful social strata with lot of people around him.
What was Salman’s reaction after watching the film?
When Salman doesn’t say anything after watching his film it means you are on good grounds (Laughs). It's the same with Salim (Khan) uncle. Both didn’t say anything so I am happy.
Was Salman patient enough with the look and weight gain and loss?
Yes, he was. He is still very unpredictable like he was from his very first film with me, but now he has become little patient and he understands that whatever preparation was happening was happening for the right cause and for the necessary impact from the film. His oldest look is the coolest one and he has portrayed it in the coolest way. But he would say all the time that what I was making him do. He would tell me that first you do this make-up, first you wear this beard and moustache and show me that old look. During Sultan he would tell me to wear the chaddi and come into the mud (laughs).
Did he have lot of questions for you?
He has good days and bad days. Some days he will not ask you anything, whereas some days he would want to sit an extra hour and ask lot of questions while having his coffee, and then again he would get up and say, ‘Okay, now it is done’.
How has Salman evolved as an actor over the years?
He is a very versatile actor. He is someone who can do films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and also do a film like Bharat and at the same time also do a Chulbul Pandey. But people don't look at him that way because he doesn’t talk very seriously about his acting skills. If he starts using those heavy duty words that I got into the character and I didn’t sleep for two days, people would take him seriously. He is a phenomenal actor and that is why he has this huge mass connect.
Many new records are being set with Avengers, Baahubali…and then Salman himself breaks his own record. Is there a pressure?
Yes, there will always be pressure with a big film. It is also a landmark film. But somewhere or the other we are all very clear that if the film is good, records will follow automatically. So the idea while making the film should only be about putting your best foot forward to make the best film on that day and that is what we work towards. And we have always seen that if the film is good it might just start slow but eventually it does lot of business. That is the approach we usually take.
Though your Tiger Zinda Hai was a huge success, there is also Salman’s Race 3 and Tubelight that didn’t meet the expectations. Does that worry you?
I am okay, I don’t think that would affect anything. Salman is still a huge star, the kind of buzz that Bharat has created with the trailer and the songs, is phenomenal. We have been getting messages from trade people that the vibe of the film is looking very good. Now it all boils down to the content and story. When the audience finds that this film is bringing something new, they will go for it.
You clearly didn’t want Katrina Kaif as she and Salman had just done TZH. Now that the film is ready for release what are your thoughts?
Getting Katrina on board was a very conscious decision. When Priyanka couldn’t do the film for X reason, I told Katrina, "You read the script but you have to understand one thing that I am not going to change anything in the film because there is a certain edge to Kumud Raina’s (played by Katrina) character." So when Katrina read the script she understood why I don’t want to change anything and then she worked backwards to get into the character for which she did lot of acting and language workshops and further she was styled for the part. We started from the scratch and I think her performance in Bharat will be nicely appreciated because it is very new for her and the audience.
You have said that the romantic scenes between Salman and Katrina comes very naturally...
They really look good together, so the problem is that you have to write scenes which are not love scenes because if you write love scenes then those will look very clichéd on both of them. So I try and write real scenes which are about real things and real conversations and automatically just with the way they look at each other it becomes a love scene.
You are already working on the third franchise of Tiger.
Yes, I have kind of narrowed down a story for the third instalment of Tigerfranchise but we haven’t made any announcement yet. I have shared that story with Salman and Adi (producer Aditya Chopra) and both are quite excited. So once Bharat gets out of my system, we will start working towards it.
As a director what is your take on the industry, how is it evolving? The monumental success of Raazi, Stree, Andhadhun, Badhaai Ho — the midsize films that defied the box office rules.
Content driven films have always worked. Deewar, Lagaan...these were all content driven films. Good film has only worked because it has a story, so let’s not start calling story content. Every time a director makes a film which is new for its times, is always going to work.
Who is your target audience for Bharat?
This is a pan India film, there is no target audience. From a seven-eight-year-old to a 100-plus, it has everyone in the film.
You may be wanting to work with other actors as well?
I really want to work with Aamir, Shah Rukh, Akshay, Ajay Devgn, Ranbir, Varun, Arjun — they are all very good actors. You just have to find the right story to do with them and then it all clicks, but right now ‘Bhai’ (Salman) is not leaving me (laughs).

‘Chale Aana’ From De De Pyaar De Is Sure To Tug At Your Heartstrings
youtube
The upcoming rom-com De De Pyaar De has created quite a buzz ever since the makers have released the rib-tickling trailer of the film. While the movie may appear to be all fun and frolic, it does have moments that tug at your heartstrings, and the latest track from the film — ‘Chale Aana’ beautifully encapsulates those moments.
Picturized on Rakul Preet and Ajay Devgn, and composed by Amaal Mallik, who is known for his soulful melodies, Chale Aana is a heart-melting track that talks about the pain of separation and heartbreak, with a 90s flavour to it. The soul-stirring song comes to life in the melodious voice of Armaan Malik and Kunaal Vermaa’s evocative lyrics justify the mood of the song.
Speaking about this high-on-emotion track, music director Amaal said, “Akiv (Ali) is very clear as a director, he knows what he wants and believes in pure melody. We cracked the words and lyrics and it brought about a nostalgic 90s feel to the song. Chale Aana is a 90s song in the year 2019, and I’m really happy with what we have achieved. It’s a heartbreak song, but done in the most heroic way, something that suits Ajay sir.”
What’s more, there is an interesting story behind how Chale Aana got penned. Speaking about it, lyricist Kunaal Vermaa said, “I had penned down a few lines when I was going through an emotional turmoil. One night, Amaal called me up asking if I have an emotional song. I sent him these lines, which he loved instantly. Those lines turned into this beautiful song – Chale Aana.”
Chale Aana’s depth and intensity is truly unmatchable, and the song is hitting all the right chords, including that of director Akiv Ali. He said, “Chale Aana is my personal favourite. It comes at a crucial point when there is an upheaval in Ajay and Rakul's relationship. Kunaal's beautifully penned lyrics combined with Amaal Mallik's soul-stirring music and Armaan Malik's haunting voice seamlessly capture the pain of separation and heartbreak. It is an intense track and I am hoping that it touches a chord with everyone.”
We would be surprised if it doesn’t.
Helmed by Akiv Ali, De De Pyaar De, stars Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet and Tabu in lead roles. The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg, and is slated to release on May 17, 2019.

We’ve seen their jodi grace our screens from 1993 with Baazigar until very recently with their 2015 blockbuster Dilwale. Their chemistry has always been undeniable, and their combined acting powers have made Karan Johar a very successful man. He has directed them from their breakthrough roles in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, and the critically acclaimed movie My Name Is Khan. While their reel charisma sizzled our screens for a majority of the 90s, their off-screen personas lead their own separate lives. Despite the speculation from fans, the actors insisted nothing was going on between the two, and they were nothing more than good friends.

When they were first paired together, Shah Rukh was already married to his longtime partner Gauri Khan, and Kajol went on to marry her ‘first crush’, actor Ajay Devgn. During this time, Shah Rukh and his wife Gauri welcomed their son Aryan Khan, their daughter Suhana Khan and finally their youngest child AbRam Khan. Kajol and Ajay welcomed their first child in 2003, daughter Nysa Devgan and in 2010 welcomed their son, Yug Devgan. While fans were thrilled that their favorite actors were doing so well in life and were happy, they all inwardly wanted to see them sizzle on screen again.
Dilwale

This was the seventh time the on-screen couple were paired together, and Kajol was back to acting after a five-year-long hiatus from the industry. The film was a box office success, and fans were absolutely delighted to see the couple on the screen once more. Their film Dilwale saw a grand opening and was directed by Golmaal director Rohit Shetty.
On the Badshah’s 54th birthday, Kajol took to her Instagram to post a picture of the two from the sets of Dilwale and wished the actor a spectacular birthday. Referring to him as her sweet friend, Kajol and her constant on-screen partner, Shah Rukh Khan have shared screen space since what feels like time immemorial.

And, almost all of their films went on to become blockbusters. Their movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is so popular; it’s even worshipped by those in Western countries like America and the UK (basically wherever Indians have settled down).

Kajol is known for being extremely private about her personal life. She rarely makes an appearance and prefers not to talk about her family during interviews. Despite her jovial and bubbly nature, the actress has stated in the past that she likes to keep certain things private. However, the actress decided to throw aside her convictions and recently decided to do an Instagram “ask me anything”. The actress decided to reply to all the questions with a humorous take and proceeded to answer her fans’ essential questions.

Out of the billion inquiries that Kajol addressed yesterday, there was an essential answer that everybody needed to know “Would you wed SRK on the off chance that you didn’t meet Ajay?” To this, a super-clever Kajol answered, “Isn’t the man expected to propose?” Kajol further proceeded to uncover her inclination as an on-screen character between hubby, Ajay and SRK. The on-screen character shared, “Relies upon the circumstance.” She had likewise revealed some intriguing insights regarding her children and parenthood with Ajay.
When asked if she had plans to have any more children, the actress said she did not and had no dreams of doing so ‘in the pipeline’. She was also asked if she preferred working with Shah Rukh Khan or her husband, and she cleverly retorted “Depends on the situation.” The actress also proudly spoke about how she married the first man she had developed a crush on and that she does get a little envious when hubby, Ajay Devgn pays more attention to their children than her. Although, she claimed the feeling was mutual. Some of her newer fans even wanted to know if her marriage to Ajay Devgn was an arranged or love marriage.
What The Actors Have Said During Interviews

According to news reports from the mid-90s, the public wasn’t the only one who was suspicious of their chemistry. It was reported that Ajay Devgn too was affected by all the rumors flying around and had allegedly requested his love, Kajol to keep a little distance from Shah Rukh. Shah Rukh, however, attempted to quash these claims and said he found it hard to believe that Ajay would ever say something like that. The actor went on to further state that if his wife, Gauri had been an actress, he would not have reacted in the same way. The actor admitted that initially, he didn’t expect his friendship with Kajol to blossom as they got off to a rough start.

In another interview, Kajol claimed that when she and Shah Rukh first met on the sets of Baazigar, he was nursing a hangover and was in a bad mood. As she was talking a lot, the actor asked her to “Please shut up.” Looking back at these moments, the actors shared a sense of camaraderie that can only be achieved through years of friendship. Tell us what you think of this story. Do you believe Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan are a jodi made in heaven?

This Intelligence Officer Doesn’t Let Death Threats Affect Her Duty

This Intelligence Officer Doesn’t Let Death Threats Affect Her Duty
Shivani K Hyderabd040-395603080 August 5, 2019
Have you watched Ajay Devgn’s movie Raid? It definitely wasn’t a super-duper hit in theatres, but there was this particular tagline in the movie that garnered attention — “Heroes don’t always have to come in uniform!” Don’t you think this tagline holds true not just for the reel life but even for real life? This was a movie that was based on income tax raids (high profile ones).
We’re talking of one such Sheroe, an intelligent officer who fought through all the oddities that she had to face both on the professional and personal front with élan just to serve her country. She is Sudesna Sengupta, and her life story is no less than an exciting thriller.
We’ve seen women don the uniform and serve the country. We’ve seen women come out in open and talk about matters that affect the woman gender, and how they’re denied basic rights like freedom of speech, etc. We’ve seldom seen women silently play their role in relieving their country from its problems, right? So, when we came across Sudesna Sengupta’s story, we were inspired and wanted to share it with you. Let’s read about her contribution to her country, India!
Trailer: She carried out an operation to capture a smuggler who was declared wanted in nearly 40 cases. The smuggler was such that he had been successfully eluding the Indian police for six years.
Flashback: Recalling the operation Sudesna says, “After gathering intel, we started the operation at 1 am in hired vehicles as his aides were spread all over the area in Maslandapur (West Bengal). His hideout had multiple exits. At 4:30 am we reached an opening where we had to enter from an iron grill below the door. Barely dogs could pass through it.”
In spite of her team’s insistence that she stays back, Sudesna along with her partner Sudeb Sarkar went ahead and nabbed the smuggler. She says that she just couldn’t miss the golden chance and the gritty officer decided to lead the team from the front (1).
Sudesna is an officer under the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. She works in DRI which handles the combat operations concerning smuggling of illegal goods, trafficking narcotics, thwarting any kind of anti-national activities, and under-invoicing.
Family Support Was The Key To Her Success
Shutterstock
Sudesna, who hails from Kolkata, the city of joy, says that her parents, as well as her in-laws, supported her throughout her career-based decisions. In short, she regards them as her core strength in life. Sudesna says that in spite of having a sibling brother, her father always gave her the priority too and never discriminated between the two of them. In fact, her father took her along when he went around West Bengal canvassing the books he published. Her father motivated her to do something enormous for the society she lived in, and for her country.
In a world where the nuclear family is the fad, Sudesna still lives in a joint family where it’s her mother-in-law who plays the role of the head of the family. Sudesna describes her MIL as a fighter as she managed to raise her two sons without her husband as he had passed away 23 years back.
Sudesna is married to Sourav Sengupta who is a table tennis player on the national level. They have a daughter and a son together.
What Made Her Choose The Path That Contributed To The Society
Sudesna says that for her, studies have been nothing less than first love right from her school days. She loved literature but she chose geography for her honors. She was an active participator in college activities which gave her exposure to several social issues. This led her to join as a member of the Rotaractor Club in Kolkata. She conducted drives that included visits to old age homes, orphanages, and rehabilitation centers — this stimulated her to take up human rights as her subject in masters. And this is where it all began — to contribute to society!
Challenges She Has To Face As An Intelligence Officer
She says that it’s always a challenge for her to work day and night while having two kids to take care of at home. Initially, she was given assignments where the accused were females. ‘Lady Officer’ — this title wasn’t appreciated by her and she had to prove herself for a year so that she was given cases that required midnight raids and strength and energy equivalent to a man.
She says that facing threats has become a common scenario now. Most of the threats go by the accused telling her that once he/she is out, even God cannot save her.
She says that the accused when arrested, remind her about her son, daughter, and husband and threaten her that they will harm her family. She says it’s disturbing, but she doesn’t care! At the end of the day, her contribution towards the nation is her priority. And she surely has stuck by that. Women like Sudesna who dare to do what they love in spite of the sword of danger hanging above their head inspires to not just women but every single citizen of the country. More power to you Sudesna! We salute your contribution to the nation!
