About 100 inmates are expected to stage a hunger strike at the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay, Ont. on Monday morning to protest what they say are inhumane living conditions inside the facility.
Kim Schofield, a criminal defence lawyer in Toronto, said the complaints of inmates are long-standing, but conditions in the prison, northeast of Toronto, have gotten worse since restrictions were imposed on the facility in March to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The hunger strike is set to begin at breakfast and will involve inmates on about five wings of the prison, she said. It will continue until all demands are met by correctional officials. The inmates do not feel heard, she said.
"They have various demands that are really very, very basic," Schofield said on Sunday. "You can't just lock people in a box and not tend to other needs."
Inmates are frustrated about a lack of drinkable tap water, dirty clothing, declining food quality, a lack of programming, no access to family members, no ability to get books or copies of the Criminal Code, a lack of healthy options at the canteen, a lack of good quality hygiene products, limited access to television and bad air quality, according to Schofield.
Religious diets, including Kosher and Halal, are not being accommodated, she added. The quality of food has declined since the pandemic, she said.

dont you dare die on me.
1917 x reader, tom blake x reader, will schofield x platonic!reader
in which the reader dies instead of blake.
warnings: death, mentions of war.
dedicated to @gecrgemackays , @royalbluehues , @willschofield , and @interstellarflare thank you for unknowingly inspiring me to write haha!!
You, Y/N L/N, were quite surprised - yet annoyed - when Blake had woken you up from your light sleep on the green grass.
“Get up, sleepy head.” He chuckled, lightly kicking you with his boot.
“What do you want?” You grumbled, peaking one eye open and seeing Schofield accompanying the former man above you.
“We’re gonna go on a trip.” Blake joked dryly as Will scoffed and rolled his eyes.
“Blake’s supposed to deliver some information to another sector, and he took it upon himself to choose us to accompany him.” Will smiled, his voice sickly sweet but with a backhanded undertone.
“Fine.” You groaned, sitting up and adjusting your helmet. “Let’s go boys.”
You needed no further convincing. You felt useless just sitting in the trenches and waiting for something to happen. If you were gonna be stuck in the middle of the Great War, then you were gonna sure as hell do something.
And you were off, the boys struggling to keep up with your fast pace. Already having all the supplies, the three of you were good to go.
...
After a long walk through no mans land, the soldiers discovered an abandoned German trench which didn’t end well. Having decided to explore, they ended up setting off a booby trap and almost getting buried alive.
Blake grabbed Schofield’s hand as the latter stumbled blindly through the wreckage. All the while, Will grabbed ahold of your hand and practically dragged you out. It must’ve been a sight, if anyone had been watching.
“I-I can’t see!” Will screamed as the dust practically blinded him.
You collapsed on the ground, sputtering for air and coughing up dust.
“Y/N, are you alright??” Tom rushed towards you and cupped your cheeks with his hands to calm you down.
“Will, hand me the water!” He demanded. Will - who was finished with clearing his eyes out - hurried over with the canteen.
“I know, I know. Just hold still.” Tom muttered as he took the water and slowly poured it out and over your face.
The dirt dropped from your eyes, turning into mud. You slowly blinked, your vision coming back. The two men stood above you, a look of worry decorating their handsome faces.
“Thank- thank you.” You praised through coughs.
...
The three soldiers ended up stumbling upon a wood cabin. Will had to hold onto you to make sure you kept up with them for once.
“Woah.” You muttered, looking down at the cherry blossom trees as the boys talked about god knows what.
Running down the hill and towards the stone gate, the two men yelled at you to be careful but you only rolled your eyes.
Maybe there was water, or even food in the house.
The men shook their heads and laughed at you. Just the sight of you getting giddy over something so small made them happy themselves.
The smile on your face immediately disappeared when you found the body of a dead dog right infront of the quant house.
All you could do was stare at the poor creature. The bullet hole in his chest, with the fleas dancing around him was just too much.
Who could be cruel enough to murder an innocent animal.
Turning around, you spotted the bodies of dozens of dead cows littering the field as well.
A sob wracked itself up your throat at the sight.
You kneeled back down next to the pup and took a handful of dirt, sprinkling it over the corpse. It was the closest you could get to burying it in these conditions.
A hand on your shoulder caused you to squeal and fall on your butt in shock.
Will put a finger to his lips as he readied his gun and slowly entered the house, checking for any danger.
...
After the boys checked the house and yard out for any campers, you decided to check out the well and see if the water was still any good.
The whirring of planes over head drew your attention.
“Think those are our friends?” Blake asked allowed.
You simply shrugged and watched the fight between three planes go down.
Two of them overpowered the other, eventually shooting him down.
The boys and you watching in awe as the pilot attempted to keep the plane off the ground.
The sound of it grew closer and closer until it eventually crashed through the barn, catching fire as the pilot screamed in pain.
You fell backwards, clearly startled. Blake rushes towards the wreck and struggled to get the man out. All you could do was stare.
You knew at that moment that if the man died, you would hate yourself for the rest of your life. You didn’t even try to help, too shell shocked you even move.
The man started yelling in German. Your eyes widened, he was begging for water.
You were not going to let this soldier die, quickly deciding to go calm him down, you ordered Will to get him some water.
“Blake, grab the scissors from my pack, we’re gonna need to cut through his uniform.” You jumped into action, quickly thinking back to your knowledge of gunshot wounds - even if this wasn’t a gunshot wound, anything could help.
“Will how’s that water com-“ you were cut off by the sharp feeling of metal piercing your skin. A squeak left your lips as you fell backwards.
“Hey, Hey!! You son of a bitch!” Blake screamed as he readied his gun, but Schoefield beat him to it. Shooting the guy three times, leaving his dead in a puddle of your blood.
“Y/n, hon. Listen to me, can you hear me?” Blake asked gently.
You felt as if you couldn’t breathe. Your hands sat perched on the wound, the red liquid staining your hands as you shook.
Your jaw dropped open to speak, but nothing came out. Wills watchful eyes watered from farther away, knowing there was nothing to do.
“Will, please. What- what do we do?” He cried as he cradled your body.
Your salty tears fell down your face, falling into your wound and making it hurt even more.
“Blake, I don’t want to die.” You sobbed. “But it hurts so bad.”
Will stayed stuck in his position over head. He know of Blake’s feelings towards you, knowing this would be the hardest thing his friend would ever have to go through.
Blake often spoke highly of you. Admiring your work from afar, that is until he was given orders to deliver the message and found the perfect opening to start talking to you.
And god did he regret it.
You sputtered and gasped for air, your face paling as you lost more and more blood.
“Will,” you begged, addressing him by his first name. When he looked down sadly, you turned your gaze to Blake. “Tom, help me please.”
“I-I can’t sweetheart. I don’t know how.”
“Will you write to my mother for me? Just let her know that I made it this far, that I- that I’m sorry for not listening to her and staying at home. I just wanted to feel like I was doing good.”
Your voice got quieter and quieter as your head lulled to the side, resting on Blake’s chest.
“Yes of c- wait no, no! Keep your eyes open. You’re going to be okay! Don’t you dare die on me.” He lightly smacked your face, but it was no use. You were slowly fading. “Wait no, I- I need to tell you something first.”
You glanced up at him with glassy eyes. A way to telling him that you were listening.
“I just- I need you to know that I - I think you’re really beautiful, even with all the blood.” He cringed at his phrasing, yet continued. “And the way that your always kind to everybody, hell, and even the fact that you care so much for men you don’t even know. I’ve practiced this so many times alone, sitting on my bunk. But of course now I can’t seem to put it into words. I just think that I may be in love-“
Blake stopped himself, looking down to see how you were taking this.
A sob made its way up his throat, there you lay in his lap, lifeless. Somehow Blake was still entranced by your beauty. “Blake.” Schoefield spoke up.
“Come on, bud. It’s time to go.”
“No, no she’s fine. Just- just hanging on. She will be okay.” He was in denial.
Hell, who wouldn’t be after they just lost their friend.

Scavengers animal
remove the bodies from the garden and re-bury them elsewhere) – this seems unlikely and scavenging is a more probable explanation. I have heard similar accounts of foxes digging up the bodies of foxes buried in people’s gardens, which has led to the suggestion that foxes may bury their dead (i.e. Roger Burrows described how foxes excavated and removed the bodies of foxes and badgers buried in his garden, in one case removing the head of a dead fox, although this should be treated with caution. Some authors have suggested that this happens during particularly harsh winters, although Stephen Harris observed cannibalism in the relatively food-rich habitat of suburban London (fox remains in six stomachs, accounting for 0.6% of the total diet), as did Brian Coman in Victoria, Australia (fox remains in 27 stomachs, accounting for just under 3% of the diet). red foxes, striped skunks, and raccoons were better able to find bait when it was cool and humid, presumably because such conditions cause scents to linger.”įoxes will occasionally scavenge carcasses of their own species. The researchers found that 66 eggs and 87 starlings were eaten by raccoons, foxes and skunks the baits hung around for longer as wind speeds increased and they concluded that: In a paper to the journal Ethology in 2012, Ruzicka and Conover presented data from their study in which they distributed chicken eggs and dead starlings in various different habitat types around the Willard Bay Reservoir between May and August 2009. By contrast, hot, dry conditions cause scents to be quickly vapourised and dispersed within a few minutes. Indeed, it has been calculated that ideal scavenging conditions occur at wind speeds of between one and four meters per second (2 - 8 knots), with cool, humid conditions to allow the scents to linger in the air and on the ground. The reason for this is that wind speeds above about three metres per second (6 knots) causes air mixing and turbulence, which dilutes odours, making them more difficult to follow. In the Highlands of Scotland, foxes typically live singly or in pairs, so a group of 12 would indicate multiple neighbouring animals making use of this food resource.Ī recent study by Rebekah Ruzicka and Michael Conover at the Utah State University in the USA suggests that the weather conditions and the landscape in which a carcass is lying impact how easily a scavenger can track it down. They had clearly eaten their fill…” A Red fox caught on a remote camera scavenging from the carcass of a deer left out by researchers at the University of Wisconsin. One was rolling in the snow in the centre of the frozen burn, and others were gnawing lazily at the stag. Others were bickering, and their yaps and yells sounded strange in a silence which seemed veritably to hiss. “ One or two of them were lying down, tidying themselves or gnawing the ice from between their toes. In his book, British Wild Animals, for example, Mortimer Batten described “a dozen foxes” surrounding a dead stag killed by the harsh conditions in the Highlands during the memorable winter of 1947. In their Mammals of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Heptner and Nikolaï Naoumov noted that foxes feed on carrion only in the late hours of the evening and overnight, leaving at sunrise (often to lay up nearby, where it may remain for several days, visiting the carcass periodically) – if the carrion is visited by wolves the fox, according to Heptner and Naoumov, follows after them early in the morning.Ī carcass may occasionally attract several foxes that will feed together it is unclear whether such aggregations of an ordinarily territorial species consist of related individuals, although some reports suggest not. shot, but not collected) during the hunting season. Indeed, following 641 miles of fox trails on three study areas in Michigan, USA, during two winters, led wildlife biologist Ray Schofield to 61% of the deer carcasses marked (i.e. They will also make use of any animals killed on roads or by hunters. Foxes are not averse to taking carrion and where they share their territory with larger carnivores (lynx and wolves, for example), they may shift their diet more towards scavenging from their kills.

Chiropractic Care Gives Teenagers Relief From Back Pain

Chiropractic Care Gives Teenagers Relief From Back Pain
Nearly half of all teenagers have musculoskeletal pain. This is the finding of recent scientific research study. This article will discuss teens having pain of the musculoskeletal system, especially neck and lower back pain.
Here in Western Pennsylvania youngsters are returning to school and it is prudent to be aware of some of the common physical stresses that can cause problems. While we’re not surprised that adults engaging in vigorous physical activity may undergo injury to their neck and back some may fail to recognize that children are susceptible to the same deleterious conditions.
For instance, many of our teenagers are participating in various school activities and sports.
I have patients that are involved in the school marching band. They have been in “band camp” which requires them to be practicing daily for many hours. A number of them are carrying heavy instruments like drums and tubas. Some are on the dance team. A percentage of them will develop neck and back conditions.
Likewise, cheerleaders have been undergoing enhanced, preseason training. These students are involved in incredibly acrobatic cheerleading routines. There are girls who are called “flyers” who are literally launched into the air and do gymnastic maneuvers like flips. Then there are the youngsters who are considered the “bases” that must catch the flyers. Cheerleaders actually have a higher injury rate than football players.
Speaking of football players, we all know that they are intensely involved in their preseason practices and it’s not difficult to imagine the physical stresses they are undergoing.
Locally, boys and girls are practicing for soccer. It is common for soccer players to use their head to propel and direct or “head the ball” to a desired location. I’ve seen numerous soccer players who have injured their neck while performing this maneuver.
A recent research study published in BMC Pediatrics, June 2019 reported that nearly half of teens have musculoskeletal pain. The study noted that surveys completed by 1021 teenagers revealed that 46% had pain in one or more body sites. The data showed that teens with musculoskeletal pain in at least one body site and lower quality of life scores and lower sleep quality than their pain free peers. Additionally, participants with pain in multiple sites reported lower quality of life and sleep quality scores and those with pain in only one area.
Clearly our young people are at risk for musculoskeletal neck and back conditions.
Fortunately seeing a Doctor of Chiropractic can help many of these teens. Chiropractic care has always been shown to be a possible solution to children experiencing painful conditions. Chiropractic therapy is effective, safe and does not involve the use of possibly harmful drugs and medications and it does not involve the use of invasive procedures like surgery.
If a child complains of neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain or headaches it should not be ignored. Seeing a chiropractor for consultation is highly recommended.

Canada’s Trudeau vows action after four freeze to death in ‘mind blowing’ tragedy (Reuters) Canada is doing all it can to stop people smuggling across the U.S. border after a family of four froze to death in a “mind blowing’ tragedy, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday. U.S. authorities have charged a U.S. man with human trafficking after the four—a man, woman, baby and teenager—were found dead in the province of Manitoba, a few yards north of the frontier with Minnesota. The four have tentatively been identified as a family from India, part of a larger group trying to enter the United States by walking across snow-covered fields in a remote region during blizzard-like conditions. “It was an absolutely mind-blowing story. It’s so tragic to see a family die like that, victims of human traffickers ... and of people who took advantage of their desire to build a better life,” Trudeau told a news conference. Canada, Trudeau said, was working very closely with the United States to stop smuggling and help people “taking unacceptable risks.”
Rare blast of snow, ice takes aim at Southeast US coast (AP) Freezing rain, sleet and snow blew into coastal areas stretching from South Carolina to Virginia on Friday in a winter storm that forecasters say could snarl a region that’s unaccustomed to winter precipitation. Authorities along the North and South Carolina coast warned that ice accumulations could cause major power outages, while areas to the northeast, stretching into Virginia, could see several inches (centimeters) of snow. In North Carolina, a Delta Air Lines plane with 19 passengers on board skidded off the runway and rolled into mud while taxiing at snowy Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Friday night, according to airport officials. No injuries were reported aboard the flight from Washington, D.C.
Omicron wave leaves US food banks scrambling for volunteers (AP) Food banks across the country are experiencing a critical shortage of volunteers as the omicron variant frightens people away from their usual shifts, and companies and schools that regularly supply large groups of volunteers are canceling their participation over virus fears. The end result in many cases has been a serious increase in spending by the food banks at a time when they are already dealing with higher food costs due to inflation and supply chain issues. “Food banks rely on volunteers. That’s how we keep the costs low,” said Shirley Schofield, CEO of the Food Bank of North Alabama. “The work still gets done but at a much higher expense.”
The pandemic pushed more families to homeschool (Los Angeles Times) During the pandemic, a growing number of families in California and across the U.S. have chosen to home-school. The reasons for doing so are diverse, complex and span socioeconomic and political spectrums: schools implementing too many COVID-19 safety protocols, or too few; the polarizing conversation around critical race theory; neurodivergent kids struggling with virtual instruction; and an overall waning faith in the public school system. What these parents have in common is a desire to take control of their children’s education at a time when control feels elusive for so many people. The proportion of American families home-schooling at least one child grew from 5.4% in spring 2020 to 11.1% in fall 2021, according to a U.S. Census Bureau analysis. The number of Black families choosing to home-school increased five-fold during that time, from 3.3% to 16.1%.
Clashes erupt again over COVID curbs on French island of Guadeloupe (Reuters) One police officer was injured and police faced gunfire during a night of civil unrest over COVID-19 restrictions in Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory in the Caribbean, the island’s local authority said on Friday. Shops were vandalised and there were attempted robberies during the unrest, focused on Guadeloupe’s largest urban centre, Pointe-a-Pitre, the authority said. One police officer was injured and police faced gunfire during a night of civil unrest over COVID-19 restrictions in Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory in the Caribbean, the island’s local authority said on Friday. An 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew has been in force since Jan. 10 in Guadeloupe. Similar restrictive measures triggered violent protests last month in Guadeloupe and also Martinique, another French overseas territory in the Caribbean. In Guadeloupe there has been mistrust of the French government’s handling of health crises since the 1970s when many islanders were exposed to toxic pesticides used in banana plantations.
Despite key win, Venezuela’s opposition split over strategy (AP) Iglenda Monzón lost her restaurant to Venezuela’s protracted economic crisis. Her daughters then emigrated to Colombia to find work and left behind two children. She and the boys sometimes go hungry and often do not have running water, electricity or gas. Theirs is a common tale across the troubled South American country, and like millions of others desperate for a change, Monzón voted in the country’s recent regional elections. Her ballot contributed to a deeply symbolic opposition win in the heartland of the ruling socialist party. But just by casting a ballot, she stepped into the most divisive issue for parties seeking a new government—whether or not to take part in elections most see as deeply unfair. Skeptics doubt the value of participating in contests that most independent monitors still see as profoundly tilted in favor of President Nicolás Maduro’s government. November’s state and local elections were the first in years in which most major opposition parties participated. The outcome underscored the opposition’s dilemma: The government finally accepted a loss in Barinas, but only after it had claimed victory in most other contests nationwide and only after it made things as hard as possible on its rivals.
Chile’s new cabinet (Reuters) As Chile’s incoming Cabinet stood for photos after being unveiled on Friday one could read in the captured image the changing face of the Andean country. The line-up was dominated by women—14 out of 24 ministers—with seven of the Cabinet under the age of 40 and the youngest 32. The average age was 49. President-elect Gabriel Boric himself, a former student protest leader, will be just 36 when he takes office in March. Boric chose an experienced central banker as his finance minister, cheering markets. But an emphasis on political diversity and fresh ideas shows Chile’s first Millennial leader also wants to stick to his campaign promises to shake things up. Some analysts and conservative voters on Twitter said Boric’s young team may struggle, though, given a lack of experience and a divided country, where the election saw an ultra-right rival candidate gain 44% in the second-round vote.
China Holds the Line on ‘Zero Covid,’ but Some Wonder for How Long (NYT) In a glitzy Shanghai shopping district, about 40 people who happened to be at a Uniqlo store were informed that they would be spending the night there. A suspected Covid case had been traced to the shop. Elsewhere in the same city, Anna Rudashko was told to return to an office building she had visited for a meeting the day before. She spent 58 hours there with more than 200 strangers, waiting for test results. China, which has largely kept the coronavirus at bay since 2020, is going to ever more extreme lengths to quell outbreaks that have proliferated around the country in recent weeks, and a growing number of people are finding their lives suddenly upended as a result. At least 20 million people in three cities were under full lockdown as recently as last week, and many more cities across the country have been subjected to partial lockdowns and mass testing. During the past month, at least 30 major Chinese cities have reported locally transmitted Covid cases. With each passing day, the government’s dogged pursuit of “zero Covid” is looking harder to achieve. Many wonder how long it can be maintained without causing widespread, lasting disruptions to China’s economy and society.
Tokyo daily COVID-19 cases hit record for 4th straight day (Reuters) Tokyo recorded its highest number of daily COVID-19 infections for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday as the Omicron variant continued to spread rapidly. The capital city had 11,227 new coronavirus cases, the local government said, a day after reinstatement of curbs on mobility and business activity that are set to run until Feb. 13. The occupancy rate of hospital beds for coronavirus patients in Tokyo rose to 34.3%. A rise to 50% would warrant a state of emergency with more severe restrictions, local officials have said.
Storm blankets Syrian tented camps in snow, at least one child dead (Reuters) At least one child was killed in northern Syria this week when a storm blanketed tented camps in snow and brought freezing temperatures, compounding the misery of thousands of people displaced by the Mediterranean country’s decade-long war. The child died and its mother was in intensive care after snow caused their tent to collapse in the Qastal Miqdad area, as a result of the storm that struck on Jan. 18, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said. Two children were hospitalised due to the cold. The United Nations, which warned about flooding once the snow started to melt, said 362 tents had been damaged in the region as of Jan. 19 and more than 400 families had been affected. The storm also disrupted life elsewhere in Syria. In government-held areas, universities and other educational institutions postponed exams. Syria’s ports temporarily closed.
Crypto Crash Erases More Than $1 Trillion in Market Value (Bloomberg) For Bitcoin, there’s only been one constant recently: decline after decline after decline. And the superlatives have piled up really quickly. With the Federal Reserve intending to withdraw stimulus from the market, riskier assets the world over have suffered. Bitcoin, the largest digital asset, lost more than 12% Friday and dropped below $36,000 to its lowest level since July. Since its peak in November, it has lost over 45% of its value. Bitcoin’s decline since that November high has wiped out more than $600 billion in market value, and over $1 trillion has been lost from the aggregate crypto market.
A professor said her students think average Americans make six figures. That’s a long way off. (Washington Post) The question asked by Nina Strohminger to her students at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania was straightforward: What did they think the average American makes in annual wages? Some of the answers, however, were not what the professor of legal studies and business ethics could have expected from one of America’s most prestigious business schools, she said. “I asked Wharton students what they thought the average American worker makes per year and 25% of them thought it was over six figures,” she tweeted late Wednesday. “One of them thought it was $800k.” Strohminger’s tweet set off a range of reactions from experts and observers wondering if this classroom interaction accurately reflected what future business leaders think about the state of wages in the United States. According to the Social Security Administration, the average U.S. annual wage last year actually was $53,383, with the median wage at $34,612.

Bookend House in Santa Monica
Nov 19, 2020
Bookend House
Architects: ORA
Location: Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Southern California, United States of America
Located blocks from the beach, the 4,820 square foot bookend house is a private compound with three distinct uses – a family home bookended by a guest house and a music studio.
The program for Bookend House mandated optimized site planning, functional relationships, circulation and access among the three uses to reduce the overall building size. Each use required separate access to give the family privacy in their home and garden while hosting long-term guests and daily visitors to the music studio.
Sustainable design strategies influenced by the local climate were required along with low-maintenance, natural finishes to limit resource use.
Informal living spaces housed in a wood and glass bar float over two submerged brick boxes containing the guest house and music studio. Strategically located to organize both indoor circulation and outdoor garden uses, the boxes’ heavy mass with punched openings playfully arranged to juxtapose scale, privacy, daylight and views, contrast the lightness and transparency of the wood bar above.
In response to the context and unique program, the long, narrow building form is oriented to capture westerly ocean breezes, utilizing an active passive cooling system. Glazing is minimized on south and west façades. To the east, deep overhangs and movable wood screens afford shade and privacy, while expansive glass openings take advantage of neighborhood landscape views.
A low-maintenance, drought resistant, native and adapted landscape design is implemented throughout, including topping the brick boxes with a green roof of native grasses connecting the landscape to second floor family spaces.
The Brief The owners’ desire was to build a garden compound with three distinct uses; a modest three-bedroom family home, a guest house and a music studio.
Key Challenges The program mandated optimized site planning, functional relationships, circulation and access among the three uses to reduce the overall building size. Each use required separate access giving the family privacy in their home and garden while hosting long-term guests and daily visitors to the music studio. Sustainable design strategies influenced by the local climate were required along with low-maintenance, natural finishes to limit resource use.
The Solutions The Bookend House is a private compound with three distinct and separate uses. A modest family home bookended by two solid volumes containing a guest house and music studio, contrast the home’s lightness and transparency and organize indoor circulation and outdoor garden uses.
Conceptualized as a bar floating above two boxes, informal living spaces are housed in a simple wood and glass bar, bookended by two brick boxes containing the guest house and music studio. Strategically located on the site to create garden wall enclosures for the outdoor patios, the boxes are submerged below grade, sliding under the bar above.
The bar steps up the site in response to a five-foot site grade change. Conforming to the natural contours, each of the main living spaces has a direct connection to the garden. Glazing is minimized on the south and west façade, and to the east deep overhangs and movable wood screens afford shade and privacy at expansive glass openings.
The heavy mass of the brick boxes contrast the wood bar, with punched wood windows playfully arranged juxtaposing scale, privacy, daylight and views. Topped with a green roof of native grasses, they connect the landscape to second floor spaces. The guest house is accessed from the street through a private courtyard. The music studio functions as a detached space with a separate entry for visitors through a lush submerged courtyard.
The garden was designed with a rugged sensibility and nothing too precious or delicate. A ‘beach meadow’ of native and adapted planting requires minimal water and maintenance. The clients The clients are a young family. The father is a musician and the studio is his workplace. Their home is a true live-work space.
The Unique Project The project is conceived in direct response to its site, context and unique programmatic requirements. In contrast to the housing vernacular typical of the neighborhood, where the tendency is to build large volumes to the maximum allowable footprint, the long, narrow building form responds to the site’s orientation towards prevailing ocean breezes from the west and lush borrowed landscape views to the east.
Sustainability Features Sustainable strategies integrated into the design include: • Optimized site planning, functional relationships, circulation and access between the three program uses reduced the overall building size. • Air-conditioning was forgone except in the music studio. Radiant heating tubes are installed throughout eliminating the need for ductwork, lowering operating temperatures and energy usage. • Active passive cross ventilation is accomplished through series of operable windows and ceiling fans in each space that pull cool prevailing breezes through the house. Warm air is exhausted outside through operable light monitors which serve as solar chimneys. • Solar heat gain is reduced by favoring larger openings to the north and east and through the use of low-e glazing throughout. • Deep overhangs and movable screens protect large glass openings from heat gain while allowing the main spaces to have expansive outdoor connections. Motorized exterior shades protect the light monitors from late afternoon sun. • Submerged below grade, the heavyweight concrete structures of the guest house and music studio with smaller, more discrete windows result in an exterior envelope with a high thermal mass. • A combination of radiant heat barriers installed below an energy star cool roof on the residence and green roofs on the bookends reduce solar heat gain. • The building envelope comprised of FSC certified wood siding, brick, cement plaster and glass is both low maintenance and long-lasting. • Inside, environmentally preferable materials made or harvested within 500 miles, sustainably grown woods and plywood made from rapidly renewable materials, and finishes free of toxins were used whenever possible. • Ultra-low flow water fixtures and solar hot water heating systems used for domestic hot water and pool heating reduce both water use and energy demands. • A low-maintenance, drought resistant, native and adapted landscape design was implemented throughout. • Storm water runoff is captured and filtered on site before being returned to the aquifer. • Solar panels provide 80% of the buildings energy use. • Two car charging stations power the owner’s cars
Building Methods Designed to create a muted backdrop for the informal landscape, the home is constructed of a neutral, earthy palette of manganese iron brick, smooth cement plaster and aged cedar. The brick transitions inside at the bookends contrasting the lightness and transparency of the wood bar. Inside, simple utilitarian interior finishes were selected including; white plaster walls, handmade tiles, warm concrete floors, birch cabinets and custom designed and fabricated cedar doors, windows and movable privacy screens.

New Look Sabres: GM 50 - DAL - Bullshit Rodeo
Every time the Buffalo Sabres face the Dallas Stars it’s like the NHL needs to show off its hottest new bullshit. 1999’s No Goal Stanley Cup Final is the frosting but let me tell you: there are a lot of calories in this cake. Last season’s matchup in Dallas saw a no goal call that I think most casual observers would probably call a goal, this time against the Sabres. For this go around I don’t feel compelled to pour it on a Stars team in the throes of the worst place you can be in Hockey: no man’s land. No, it’s not the basement that’s the worst because most clubs that find themselves there have hope and or a plan around being there. Obviously winning Stanley Cups can’t suck too bad so it’s the no-man’s land in the middle that’s the worst: if the Stars do make the playoffs whose picking them to survive the Central Division’s three headed monster of Nashville, Winnipeg and Colorado? When a club has the weapons to make the playoffs but not go deep, for several seasons on end, that is the worst kind of no-man’s land in the NHL. To make it worse the slow stretch the Stars went through apparently warranted a public roast of their two top talents by club President Jim Lights. Not only is that not how you talk about your team’s best players, it’s a real bad look when the circumstances point to an owner who agrees with the bullshit comments. Our owner Terry Pegula keeps his mouth shut most of the time… like a good owner. That’s all distraction at the end of the day anyway. What’s real is both these teams entered this game 4-5-0 in January. Another fact: the Sabres 0-6-0 record in Dallas going back a decade to January 2009. Buffalo hasn’t won in Dallas since the Ryan Miller Era… well excluding the 2018 Draft. What occurred last night in Dallas was a continuation of the bullshit rodeo we have come to expect with this matchup.
The first period of this game went over like a group of edgy cats getting spooked silly by an air horn. Both teams had axes to grind but neither looked all that cunning at the task of actually scoring goals. The Stars made a tactical choice early: check the big boys and keep them out of plays. Whether it was hits, manned coverage or just disrupting plays the Stars played desperate like a team chasing a two goal deficit. They weren’t, in fact, they scored first when Jamie Benn snuck the puck 5-hole on Linus Ullmark. Benn had gotten the puck from former Sabre Taylor Fedun whom Zach Bogosian threw a no-look back pass to in the high slot. That’s an unforced error and in this game those were going to be the only things leading to scoring plays. Speaking of Fedun, the guy who came to Buffalo in exchange for him, Remi Elie, played in this game. He had four shots in the first which is pretty good for Remi Elie. Nonetheless the visitors got pushed around in the first and it was 1-0 Stars to start the second period. The second period saw the Sabres calm down the game but not shoot enough and not score the equalizer. Captain Jack set up Reinhart for a positively wicked chance in front of Ben Bishop (who has not lost to the Sabres in regulation in his career) but it did not go. I want to complain about all the non-calls we saw through two period of play but this is the Sabres in Dallas we’re talking about after all: it’s the bullshit rodeo down there. One thing worth complaining about is the continued rise of the drop pass in the game plan. If 50% of these drop passes haven’t ended up in a turnover I’d be shocked. The positive balance to that: the Sabres are crashing the net again. Keep that up and a goal must be coming! Ugh.
The third period hurt in a few ways. No one scored. Yes, the Sabres got twice the shots the Stars did in this final frame and pushed real damn hard in the back ten but the bullshit rodeo just bucked on. I am certainly not going to defend the shot differential in a game that had so few shots but this game felt like a goalie duel as it went on. This bullshit is deeper than shots anyway: its voodoo! Marco Scandella got the puck behind Ben Bishop! MARCO SCANDELLA, you know the guy we’re all trying to run Housley out of town over? He got it past Bishop and the goal was immediately called back. Phil challenged it and lost because IT’S A BULLSHIT RODEO! The non-calls were mounting and reached a head in the third. Jamie Benn boarded Jack Eichel in the corner in a Captain-on-Captain crime that gets called in two thirds of the games this NHL season. The refs had their whistles away all game so I suppose they were consistent on that at least. Those last two or three minutes had my heart racing and my feet pacing but the comeback machine didn’t wake up and the Sabres lose their first 1-0 loss of the season. The Sabres ended up getting narrowly bucked off this bull in this edition of the bullshit rodeo. One night they score five, the next night they scored 0. The will to win was there if not the shots to prove it. It sucks because the Sabres don’t need this bullshit rodeo right now; they got to string some W’s together at some point here.
The Good News is that the next seven games are all at home back in snowy Buffalo where the Sabres are 14-6-3 this season. It’s a vital stretch you need ten points out of if not more. There is a separation in the standings growing with Pittsburgh’s win last night between the wildcards and the first team out (Buffalo). The Columbus win made up some ground but the wins got to start coming together here. Tomorrow at home against Chicago is a fun matchup to get something started with. I look forward to ignoring all the “Trade for Kane” takes during my anniversary dinner with my wife. Another take I’ll be gleefully ignoring after this Stars game: “the Sabres need an enforcer.” No, you Neanderthal they need to get a little bit tougher against teams like the Stars who will box them out of games defensively. The tactical problem with last night’s loss isn’t that no one punched Jamie Benn in the face, although it sure looked like Jeff Skinner was ready to, it was that this team’s scorers didn’t convert on their chances. One total goal games are weird, I don’t like them. Let’s not do this again, ok, Sabres?
I have something more important to dedicate the P.S. to today so I’m going to just let you know here that there is a positively awful clip from Pierre McGuire from the NBCSN broadcast of the Penguins game last night. In it he belittles American Gold Medalist Kendall Coyne Schofield before her first broadcast appearance between the benches. It’s real bad and it’s everywhere now. If it materializes a campaign to get Pierre off the NBCSN team than hop on that bandwagon, he’s one of a couple embarrassing guys us Americans need to hear from during most National broadcasts in this country. I know we have better options out there somewhere… say Kendall Coyne Schofield for one. I know I am not your best option for a Sabres fan blog but share this with your internet friends anyway. Drop me a like and a comment if you feel so compelled, I’d love to hear from you. Stay safe out there if you’re reading from the 40% of the country under blizzard and extreme cold conditions. Let’s Go Sabres!
Thanks for reading.
P.S. Bell Let’s Talk is circulating hockey twitter right now and I want to pass the message along that no matter what it is: you can talk to someone about it. If you need to talk to someone about a mental health issue or anything roughing you up right now, talk to me if nothing else.
