The Keychain, Part 1

The 21st Nova Corps were rarely deployed in inhabited regions. It was even less frequent for them to be able to stop in any city they would pass by. This campaign in the Ringlite system hadn’t been an exception until now.
It had started three months ago. Three months during which they had been fighting against the Separatists, planet after planet, without a break. It has been one of their longest campaigns yet.
But they were slowly getting to the end of it. One more month and the System should be back under the Republic’s control. It was a good thing, every trooper was starting to tire at this point.
The 21st was known to be one of the most disciplined and no-nonsense battalions. Even then, the troops were getting especially calm and quiet, these days. The only noticeable incidents were from oversight mistakes born from too repetitive tasks, at worst. No rousing each other, no lighthearted antics during intermittent respites. No jabs nor laughter could be heard in the campement. All of them were saving their energy for fighting, they didn't have the force for not much of anything else, anymore.
In the face of this growing durasteel wall of exhaustion, Ki-Adi Mundi chose to take a break in a small shopping town their basement was close to, before setting off for the next planet and the next fights. It won't replace a proper leave break, but it would still get his men’s mind out of the conflict for just a little bit of time. After all, a handful of days of rest was still much better than none at all. The droids will wait.
Tellingly, Bacara didn't even protest his express interdiction to do any kind of work, physical or mental, for the entirety of those few rotations. It really was time for this campaign to end if even his Commander was seizing the occasion to rest.
With the help of the Force, they might even be able to finally pull out of the Outer Rim for a proper leave, when they’d be over, here. They most likely wouldn't make it to the Core, but the Middle Rim would already be a welcomed change of air. The Jedi surely hoped for this much, and he knew all his troops were feeling the same.

Bacara had found himself wandering into the city’s market. He had agreed to take these few days of complete rest because he knew it would help make his mind clearer for the end of this campaign.
A few hours ago, he finally had been able to send a check-in on the CCs chat and browse the comms he had received since he had last been able to check. Mostly his training batch being their insufferable selfs. They had already planned to make a comm call in the evening, now that he had a small respite. Ponds had also sent him a holo recording of one of his Shinies having a staring contest with a big, bright pink toad for a few minutes before the toad jumped at the kid’s face, who in turn fell backwards with a yelp. Bacara hadn’t been able to hold back a smile at the sight.
The market was lively. This city wasn’t much bigger than a simple village really, but there were still a lot of people milling around. Merchants were selling all kinds of things, jewelry, everyday ustensiles, textiles. A few were hassling the crowd, loudly promoting the quality of their articles. He had passed a few of his troops tasting the local’s food with various levels of success, a few stands away. On one side of the market’s square, a woman was twisting colorful strings of wool in a young boy’s hair. Bacara knew he would find a few of his siblings with similar hairdressing at the end of the day.
Next to him, three persons were enthusiastically showing each other little handmade trinkets, trying to find the perfect one for each other. It drew his attention to the display, full of pendants, keychains, lockets, earrings and other ornaments, in various materials, all looking like little animals’ heads.
His attention was catched on one corner of the stand. Without thinking about it, he reached lightly for the little keychain adorned with some sort of reptile or amphibian’s pendant, he wasn't sure. It was made of a simple braided leather rope to which hung a small, triangular head with two big black pearls for the eyes, carved in a deep purple-blue shaded crystal dotted with vivid yellow inclusions that mimicked scales.
“It’s a salamander. An amphibian common to our forests.” The voice of the seller surprised him, making him retract his hand from where he was brushing the crystal with the tip of his fingers. Good thing none of his brothers was there to make fun of his lack of attention. “Our myths often depict them as protective spirits, even if they always like a little bit of mischief.”
The graying woman smiled at him, knowingly, before reaching for the keychain.
“The stone comes from the next System over. We call it fincree, the best translation would be “changing precious” I believe. It’s a sort of obsidian you see, it has the same translucent colors that change with the light, even if it’s not exactly glass,” she explained while lightly moving the crystal from side to side, to make the bluer reflections hide the more purplish ones. “The yellow inclusions is what makes it precious. It’s both crystal and stone because of them, see ? It’s a strong stone, one that anchors its owner, keeps them whole and guides them where their soul calls.”
Before Bacara could react, still a bit too focused on the charm, she took his hand and placed the keychain in it, closing his fingers around it and keeping them in place with both of her hands.
“It’s for you, young soldier. Take it.”
He didn't have the heart to refuse, the stone cool and heavy in his fist, grounding. He was resigning himself to dig a few credits from his belt pouch when she stopped him again with a laugh.
“None of that, soldier. It’s already yours. It’s a gift isn't it ? Let's keep it that way, then.” She smiled with that knowing glint in her brown eyes shining even brighter than before. She patted his fist sympathetically and then noticeably turned away to her next clients.
Bacara observed the little trinket in his hand for a few instants more, brushing his thumb lightly over the surface to feel the smooth glassy surface alternate with the rougher spots of yellow. He safely stored it in one of his pouches before going back to his exploration of the market.
The keychain would stay safe there until he could give it to its rightful owner.

All the attention in Washington is on the looming government shutdown, and understandably so.
Barring a last-minute spending agreement on Capitol Hill ― which is to say, barring a last-minute outburst of sanity by the extremist House Republicans preventing an agreement ― the federal government will officially run out of spending authority at 11:59 p.m. Saturday night.
Agency workers will be furloughed, except for members of the military, air traffic controllers and other essential employees who will have to work without pay. And while the federal government will keep issuing checks for automatic entitlements like Social Security, within a few days it will have to cut off funds for the Women, Infants and Children system that provides food benefits to 7 million low-income Americans. A prolonged shutdown would affect still more federal services, and likely deal a blow to the economy as well. But whether or not a shutdown happens, and however long it lasts, a whole other kind of fiscal shock is about to hit the country. And while its effects will materialize more slowly than the shutdown’s, they could be more long-lasting.
I’m talking about the end of billions in emergency funding for child care that the federal government has been providing since 2021, as part of its COVID-19 relief efforts. The money was a lifeline for providers who were getting hammered, first by a decline in customers because of illness and public health closures and since then by the need to pay the higher wages it takes to compete for workers in a tighter labor market.
That money also runs out at midnight Saturday, creating what has come to be known in Washington as the “child care funding cliff.” The term is slightly misleading: Because of the way the disbursements move from the U.S. Treasury to states and then to individual providers, the effect will be gradual. But it will be real and it will likely be significant, because providers still need money. They and the families that rely on them were struggling even before the pandemic, because of the inescapable, seemingly paradoxical economics of child care: Reliable, quality programs require salaries high enough to attract and keep talented workers, but the tuition and fees to support those salaries are more than many families can afford on their own. And the gap is probably even bigger now than it was a few years ago.
In that sense, the emergency funding was more like a Band-Aid on a wound that had been bleeding for a while and is still bleeding now. With no more Band-Aid — i.e., no more emergency funding — providers will react by reducing hours or staff, or charging more to families that are already struggling to pay, or shutting down altogether.
Predicting the precise impact is difficult, because the child care market is in such flux. A widely cited estimate by The Century Foundation says the end result could be as many as 3.2 million fewer child care slots. Critics say that’s wildly inflated.
But whichever view is closer to reality, it’s hard to imagine so much money coming out of the sector without providers and families feeling it. The economy could take a hit too, if affected parents cut back their own working hours or drop out of the labor force, though it’s likely many would simply return to more stressful double shifts as workers and caregivers — in other words, a replay of what happened to so many at the peak of the pandemic.
Precisely because it will take a while for the federal money to stop working its way through to providers, Congress still has some time to approve new funding, as Democratic leaders and their allies have been proposing with increasing urgency. But they won’t prevail unless even more elected officials — and the public at large — come to see child care as the kind of national priority the U.S. has never made it.

I write about the climate and energy for a living and even I can’t quite wrap my head around how cheap low-carbon power technologies have gotten. The cost of onshore wind energy has dropped by 70% over just the last decade, and that of batteries and solar photovoltaic by a staggering 90%. Our World in Data points out that within a generation, solar power has gone from being one of the most expensive electricity sources to the cheapest in many countries—and it’s showing little signs of slowing down.
So where does this all end?
Back in the 1960s, the nuclear industry promised a future in which electricity was too cheap to meter. Decades later, the same vision seems to be on the horizon again, this time from solar. It seems, well, fantastic. Perhaps (almost) free renewable power leads to climate utopia. Then again, should we be careful what we wish for?
The Road To Decarbonization Is Paved With Cheap Green Power
1. More renewables = less carbon. The math isn’t complicated. The faster we transition to clean energy, the less carbon dioxide we’re adding to the atmosphere and the fewer effects of global warming we will suffer.While humanity is still emitting more greenhouse gases than ever, the carbon intensity of electricity production has been dropping for well over a decade.
2. Cheap, clean power also unlocks humanitarian goals. Modern civilization rests on a foundation of electricity. Beyond its obvious uses in heating, cooling, cooking, lighting and data, electricity can decarbonize transportation, construction, services, water purification, and food production. Increasing the supply and reducing the cost of green electricity doesn’t just help the climate, it improves equity and quality of life for the world’s poorest.
3. Scrubbing the skies will take a lot of juice. Once we get emissions under control, it’s time to tackle the mess we’ve made of the atmosphere. Today’s direct air capture (DAC) systems use about two megawatt hours of electricity for every ton of CO2 plucked from fresh air. Scale that up to the 7 to 9 million tons we need to be removing annually in the US by 2030, according to the World Resources Institute, and you’re looking at about 0.5% of the country’s current energy generation. Scale it again to the nearly 1,000 billion tons the IPCC wants to sequester during the 21st century, and we’ll need every kilowatt of solar power available—the cheaper the better.
Cheap Power Has Hidden Costs
1. Cheap technology doesn’t always mean cheap power. If solar cells are so damn cheap, why do electricity bills keep rising? One problem is that renewables are still just a fraction of the energy mix in most places, about 20% in the US and 30% globally. This recent report from think-tank Energy Innovation identifies volatility in natural gas costs and investments in uneconomic coal plants as big drivers for prices at the meter. Renewables will have to dominate the energy mix before retail prices can fall.
2. The cheaper the power, the more we’ll waste. Two cases in point: cryptocurrency mining and AI chat bots. Unless we make tough social and political decisions to fairly price carbon and promote climate action, the market will find its own uses for all the cheap green power we can generate. And they may not advance our climate goals one inch.
3. Centuries of petro-history to overcome. Cheap power alone can only get us so far. Even with EVs challenging gas cars, and heat pumps now outselling gas furnaces in the US, there is a monumental legacy of fossil fuel systems to dismantle. Getting 1.5 billion gas cars off the world’s roads will take generations, and such changes can have enormous social costs. To help smooth the transition, the Center for American Progress suggests replacing annual revenue-sharing payments from coal, oil, and natural gas production with stable, permanent distributions for mining and oil communities, funded by federal oil and gas revenue payments.

The Israeli political class has known about the lopsided reality of the U.S.-Israel arrangement for some time, but for the past eight or nine years seems to have decided the farce had some value. For them, U.S. aid is valuable not because it is a good deal for Israel’s military-tech complex, but because the appearance of close strategic alignment with the U.S. serves as a public, tangible pledge, renewed annually, of Great Power backing, in a world that is largely hostile to the country’s existence. Even now, as it’s clear from Washington’s courtship of Iran that U.S. security pledges no longer mean what they once did (ask the Afghans, or before them the Vietnamese, Cambodians, and a long list of other former recipients of U.S. military aid), the value of these pledges to Israel has been based on the belief that other parties believe in them—and are therefore constrained accordingly. The point is for the world’s only hyperpower to be seen publicly putting a big diamond ring on Israel’s finger, even if the diamond is actually made of glass. The more “special” the relationship appears to others, the better.
As the price of its dependency, Israel is now being forced to downgrade its own defense industries. Whereas the previous MOU contained a special provision for Off-Shore Procurement (OSP) that allowed Israel to spend around 26% of the aid it received on domestic products, the new terms require that all aid received from Washington be spent inside the U.S. In 2018, Israel’s Defense Ministry projected that the new MOU would cost the country $1.3 billion annually in lost revenue and cause the loss of some 22,000 jobs. Moshe Gafni, a former chairman of the Knesset’s financial committee, warned of the deal’s “severe ramifications for the delicate fabric of the State of Israel, harming its security.” A separate assessment in 2020 by the Israeli think tank INSS, concluded that “anywhere between several thousand and 20,000 of the 80,000 jobs in the defense industries in Israel will be lost.”
In return for accepting Obama’s aid package, Israel has now become dangerously reliant on U.S. military technology. The result of this enforced dependency, according to the retired General Hacohen, is stunting the IDF. “Israel is so addicted to advanced U.S. platforms, and the U.S. weaponry they deliver, that we’ve stopped thinking creatively in terms of operational concepts,” Hacohen told the U.S. publication Defense News in 2016—two years before the new MOU went into effect.
This is especially dangerous because, having short-circuited Israeli competition and dumped tens of billions of dollars worth of equipment into Ukraine, the U.S. is increasingly having trouble arming itself—let alone anyone else. A recent report from the Government Accountability Office found systemic problems in the U.S. procurement system leading to widespread delays. The report found that more than half of the 26 major defense acquisition programs under review “had yet to deliver operational capability” and were delayed due to “supplier disruptions, software development delays, and quality control deficiencies.” And what does get produced often isn’t up to par. As part of its “special arrangement,” Israel gets preferential access to the F-35, but is then locked into a fleet of aircraft both riddled with technical problems and a poor fit for Israel’s strategic air priorities. At the risk of stating the obvious, it would be nice to be able to shop on the open market.
The consequences for Israel’s economy and to the country’s security posture will get more severe in coming years as the full bill from the MOU comes due. According to a congressional report, the “phasing out [of] Off-Shore Procurement (OSP) is to decrease slowly until FY2024, and then phase out more dramatically over the MOU’s last five years, ending entirely in FY2028.” As a consequence, the report notes “some Israeli defense contractors are merging with U.S. companies or opening U.S. subsidiaries”—in other words, transferring their personnel and capacities from Israel to the U.S.

F-20 Tigershark: an F-5 with steroids

The F-20 Tigershark was a high-level, elegant and robust jet fighter, created to enhance the F-5 model. Northrop Corporation developed it in the 1980s, making it remarkable with advanced avionics, state-of-the-art weapon systems and a powerful engine, reminiscent of a steroid F-5 jet fighter.
It was really an aviation wonder that crossed the line and raised the standards. However, despite being positioned as an important player in the global jet market, military customers did not accept it and the program had to be filed.
The F-20 Tigershark was an updated version of Northrop Corporation's F-5 Freedom Fighter, designed to be a light and affordable jet fighter that could be exported internationally. Northrop had plans to sell to countries such as Taiwan, South Korea and others who were looking for a modern fighter that would fit their budget.
One of the outstanding features of the F-20's design was its fly-by-wire digital control system, allowing exceptional handling and maneuverability. It also included a more robust engine than its predecessor, providing greater speed and better climbing capabilities. In addition, the F-20 incorporated some stealth features to reduce its radar cross-section and used materials that absorbed the radar.

The F-20 Tigershark completed an extensive flight test program during development. In August 82, the first prototype flew from Edwards Air Force Base in California, reaching 20,000 feet and Mach 1.4 on its 35-minute maiden voyage. In the following months, the prototype underwent handling, performance and system tests. In November, it reached Mach 2.05 during a maximum speed attempt, in addition to discreet demonstrations of avionics, weaponry and stealth in flight.

In addition to the tests in the US, the F-20 also had demonstrations in countries such as South Korea and Switzerland to boost sales. High-speed performance, high-G curves, low-level flights and handling impressed potential buyers during these demonstrations.
Overshadowed by the competition
The F-20 Tigershark project faced a variety of challenges that eventually led to its cancellation. The intense competition in the global jet fighter market was a key factor, as the F-20 encountered strong competition from other popular models such as the F-16 and Mirage 2000. Many potential buyers have opted for these established projects, considered safer and more reliable.
Political pressure also contributed to the fall of the F-20. The U.S. government was concerned that the F-20 could reduce the price of the more expensive F-16, produced by General Dynamics, an American company. In addition, there were concerns about the sale of advanced military technology to certain countries, such as Taiwan, one of the main potential buyers of the F-20. This damaged Northrop's marketing efforts and led to limited sales.
Economic factors also played a role at the end of the program. Northrop invested heavily in the development of the F-20, but without significant requests, it was unlikely that this investment would be recovered. In addition, the high cost of production made it difficult to compete with other established models that had already achieved economies of scale.
FX Program
Much of the development of the F-20 was carried out under a U.S. Department of Defense project called "FX". FX sought to develop fighters that would be able to combat with the latest Soviet aircraft, but excluding sensitive frontline technologies used by U.S. Air Force (USAF) aircraft.
FX was a product of the Carter government's military export policies, which aimed to provide foreign nations with high-quality equipment without the risk of U.S. frontline technology falling into the hands of the Soviets. Northrop had high hopes for the F-20 in the international market, but the policy changes after the election of Ronald Reagan meant that the F-20 had to compete for sales against the newer variants of the F-16 and not with the F-16/79 downgraded.
The F-20 Tigershark program was abandoned in 1986 after three prototypes were built (two of which fell after their pilots fainted due to excessive g-forces) and a partially completed quarter.

The cool promotional video of the F-20 above was made in the 1980s and presents an introduction of the super ace Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier, who at the time was a spokesman for Northrop.
In his autobiography, which he wrote after the F-20 was canceled, Yeager praised Tigershark as being "magnificent".
