meet SUNIL KOTA
Hey, isn’t that SUNIL KOTA. I thought they went away for the summer? Did you hear they might be a HUMAN? What I do know for certain is that they’re 31, and they’re BRAVE and NAIVE. They’re originally from MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ, USA and have been in FENRIRSWOOD for 1 YEAR living in SUNE’S HARBOUR. I wonder if they still work at FENIR UNIVERSITY as a RESEARCH ASSISTANT. Best if they stay safe for now.
TW: Military mentions; Plane crash; Death/Injury Mentions
On a sufficiently cloudy night—when there were no stars—the little wooded path behind the boy’s home could almost feel like nowhere. Sunil Kota walked it often, forgetting, on nights like these, that neat homes lay just around the bend and that the dull roar in the air was from cars on distant freeways, not from prowling beasts. But the boy himself, the second oldest of four children and his parents’ first son, was a searcher by nature, bold and brilliant, although he sometimes found only the latter quality encouraged by his elders. Still, the former compelled him into the dark, into the unknown, into the endless pursuit of something just out of reach.
When his backyard plot felt too restricting, then, the public nature reserve nearby, an expanse of protected, forested land, provided ample quarries—sightings of fairies, of bigfoots, of winged demons, and of the vengeful specter of one scorned witch who wandered the roads by night. Sunil himself never caught sight of them himself, of course, but his untamable adventurous spirit would compel him to climb constantly upward, into the trees, branch by branch, flashlight in his teeth, as though only getting as high as possible would provide him an ample view.
And that ascent could only prove natural, as it was, of course, an impetus he had inherited from his own father, who had moved to the United States from India as a young boy. At eighteen, the man funded his own education through the Air Force before working briefly as an airline pilot, eventually becoming the co-owner of an FBO at a small airport in suburban New Jersey, specializing in luxury aviation charters. Sunil himself spent long days at the lounge there, watching the pilots fuel up or commandeering the bronze airplane model atop the reception desk as a toy for the afternoon. He successfully dented its wing by throwing it, with one long motion, out onto the tarmac; it did not take off flying the way he might have hoped.
But despite his sometimes-zealous nature, Sunil himself did do relatively well in school, kept focused by his mother’s attention to his studies and by his father’s penchant for discipline. He excelled, in particular, in the sciences, and by the time Sunil was a teenager, he was, likewise, working odd jobs at his father’s business and eventually earning flight hours of his own. Takeoff was exhilarating, an intoxicating, adrenaline-fueled feeling that he would cling to for much of his young life. And while, briefly, he did consider following his dad into the military, Sunil opted instead to study biology and environmental sciences at a New Jersey college, compelled, at least in part, by returning, now as a young man, to the woods in which he had grown up and seeing them (and their animal denizens) beginning to fade.
Living at home, studying, and working as a flight instructor at that same airport, Sunil strove one day to become a pilot biologist for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. He earned a master’s degree in natural resource management from a prestigious New York university and continued to work toward this goal when a new opportunity arose, largely by a twist of fate. With his family’s blessing, he thus set off for Canada to begin training for the Air Operations team of the British Antarctic Survey, the United Kingdom’s national polar research institute.
He would have to learn to ski, and that was pretty funny, he thought. But the work itself was intensive, including disaster and first-aid preparedness. And setting off, lured by the promise of new adventures in new landscapes, Sunil spent six months working in the field, shuttling the aircraft back and forth from Antarctica, doing general maintenance, and supporting the research teams as appropriate.
During this time, he struck up a friendship with one particular scientist, who became something of a mentor. Sunil was visiting her in the United Kingdom in the winter of 2022 when he, taking a pleasure flight in a rented craft, passed over a small cityship called Fenrirswood. Inexplicably, his plane abruptly veered off course, and he began losing altitude quickly.
He crash-landed in the surrounding wood, his life saved by only his own skill and by the cushions of the trees. But he was in bad shape and would have perished without preternatural intervention.
The young pilot was rescued by members of a local coven, who had been drawn by the disturbance he had caused. They gave him back his strength, asked for it bit by bit, and awed by their gifts, Sunil, scientifically-minded as he was, promised allegiance to them, feeling for the first time that he had finally discovered what he had been looking for all along, some glimpse of the true nature of things.
He remained in Fenrirswood, and with his mentor’s recommendation from his Antarctic expedition, he earned a more permanent research position at Fenrir University. He feels something of a particular calling to advocate publicly for the preservation of wolf territory and habitat.
Today, in a small plane that is rickety but his very own, kept in a hangar some ways outside the city limits, he is more than happy to be the community’s eye in the sky, scoping out intruding game hunters or helping in the search for those who have wandered out and gotten lost. Still, Sunil’s own trusting nature, the part of him that sees the good in the world and those inhabit it, has made him also foolish. He forgets sometimes that he is only mortal and easy fodder for something larger to swallow completely.
Played by Ted. Portrayed by Praneet Akilla.

Top-Advantages Of Buying Marine Exhaust System From Experts
Tumblr media
Exhaust systems are essential and should always be of standard or premium quality. If you have a Yacht then you may not want to compromise with the exhaust system. The right system will always maintain the perfect flow of air in and out of the charter boat.
If you need quality, then it is better to approach an expert manufacturing team. Professionals will always make recommendations of the best yacht exhaust system that fits the performance.
The right exhaust will generate a sufficient amount of horsepower and torque
The perfect system installed in the yacht will also be safe to operate
You may not have to worry about maintenance and service very often
There are many manufacturers but you should only approach the best in the industry. There are reasons why experts are a better choice when it comes to selecting exhaust systems.
Customization
Ready-to-fit exhaust units are easily available in the leading stores. But these may not fit your requirements. It is always better if the exhaust system is custom designed as per the specifications of the yacht.
If you have a brand new yacht then it is already fitted with right sized exhaust unit. If you are investing money in a second-hand yacht, then you can get the exhaust unit custom-made by an expert team. They design the right specifications that your yacht needs.
Quality exhaust flow
The exhaust system will regulate the flow of the air. This is important to maintain fresh air supply in the cabins and the engine. If the engine does not get sufficient air supply, then its performance is affected. The yacht may not function smoothly as the engine gets overheated.
This is why it is better to ask the expert manufacturing team to inspect the yacht. They calculate the exact amount of horsepower the yacht needs. Based on calculations they will make recommendations. You should always ensure that you hire the best marine exhaust manufacturer.
Right-sized pipes
Any exhaust system will make use of pipes to transport the air through the cabins and engine unit. The diameter of the pipe is important. The bends and turns are also important. Having too many turns and bends will lower the air pressure and thus the flow.
You can get the entire yacht inspected by a professional team. They work out the entire layout and then decide to use the right-sized pipe system. This guarantees perfect airflow in and out of the yacht. Experts are concerned about your safety.
Quality material and design
All types of materials might not be the best choice for your yacht. The selection of material depends on the size of the yacht and the engine. Each of the components is also important and some of the components have to be custom designed.
Working out the perfect specification is important. The professional manufacturing team will always ensure that they only use the right grade material. This is important if you are concerned about durability and safety.
The right choice of the exhaust system will also decide the level of sound produced by the engine when it is running. Good quality material will generate less sound.

Antarctica aboard the Ocean Adventurer... and yes there were a lot of penguins!
We made this unforgettable adventure by booking with Expedition Trips who then organised everything with Quark Expeditions. They were all amazing from start to end of the journey, and we would highly recommend them! People of all ages were on the trip, with the eldest woman at 97 years so it’s never too late.
My number one tip is to pack layers and pack less than you think you wil need because the weight limit on the slightly old and wobbly looking jet plane is 15kg per person! The coldest it got was -3C and maybe a little lower with the wind chill. Waterproof clothing is a must, not because of rain but because of the spray while on the zodiacs. It’s a good idea to take along some books as there is quite a bit of waiting time. If you get seasick, then motion sickness pills are also a good idea. Remember you are very far from any medical care so bring essential medicines.
You should try your best to go into the trip with the mindset that you will have to adapt to the weather conditions and Mother Nature is unpredictable. There is not point in getting mad or impatient (though some people spent a lot of energy complaining), because the company and crew are doing their best to get you safely on your way to an unforgettable voyage. The anticipation is great for whether your plane can take off... but when you are on the way it is an exhilarating feeling!
An alternate to the fly and cruise is cruising from Ushuaia, Argentina but be warned that the waters between there and Antarctica are very rough and it takes a lot longer to reach Antarctica.
The beautiful scenery was striking with blue-white icebergs and glaciers in all directions, pristine snowy mountains, penguins, seals, whales and an absence of most vegetation. We saw only one other boat with two people on it, and a few people at each research station, otherwise it was just our cruise ship of 130 passengers plus crew. There is peace and quiet, and being on deck early in the morning felt like an isolated encounter with grand nature all around.
The trip diary:
Our offical arrival day was 15th December though we were there a day early and I’d come straight from Torres del Paine.
15th December - Another day to explore Punta Arenas, the departure city for our Antarctic adventure with Quark Expeditions. We had to get our bags weighed by Quark adventures and pick up our heavy arctic parkas and waterproof boots. The parkas were bright yellow and very warm, and ours to keep! Our main activity of the day was a tour of the Austral Brewery, which was interesting, especially trying 7 different beers at the end. The La Patagonia brewery was started by a German man Jose Fischer and when he died it was passed to his son. His son committed suicide so then the family gave up the business and it was renamed Austral. All of the beers were quite good and I especially liked the Imperial lager and the Calafate ale, which was fruity.
We caught a Taxi to the hotel and arrived just in time for the 18h briefing meeting. We were briefed on the procedures like entering and exiting the zodiac rafts, timing and weather, and the Antarctic treaty and regulations. There were 4 cm of snow on the runway at King George island and the weather for the morning didn’t look favourable so our flight would be delayed. We were to check back after dinner for the timing update. We checked the update after dinner and it said we would have breakfast as normal, lunch at 11h30 check out at noon, depart at 12h30 and attempt to fly at 15h. The excitement and anticipation could be felt in the room and it was hard to sleep.
16th December - Woke up at 8h and got ready but we had some time until the update meeting at 10h, and only about half of the people turned up since they had already announced we would not leave before 15h. The staff announced that we would not be able to fly at 15h. A group that had been waiting for two days due to bad weather already had priority and one flight was in the air with a second planned for mid-afternoon. Normally there would be two planes but two of the three planes owned by the charter company clipped wings in the hangar and were damaged. One had damage to the wing and another to the structure so they were trying to repair the wing damage. Bad luck! A waiting game untl the next update scheduled for 15h.
While we were stuck waiting, Quark arranged meals and if people would be stuck overnight then they arrange accommodation. It must be a nightmare to handle the ever-changing logistics! Many people were complaining but...no one can predict the weather and it’s unfortunate that the planes clipped each other but it was out of our control.
We rested in the lobby since we no longer had rooms, and at 15h we went up to see the update. Good news is we were cleared for takeoff and group one would meet in the lobby at 17h45 for 18h30 departure to the airport. Our flight would depart at 21h and land on King George island at 23h. The second group would depart at 3h and land at 5h tomorrow morning so they will get to have a beautiful view but after a tough long wait into the night.
Excited to get to Antarctica even if it’s 12 hours later than planned! We were in the lobby and boarded coaches at 18h30 to the airport. A separate truck carried our luggage and we checked that in at Punta Arenas airport. We were on an Antarctic Air charter flight and departed around 21h15 so 15 minutes later than planned. We got a cold dinner of sandwiches, yoghurt, fruit cocktail and an alfajore (addictive biscuits/cookies filled with dulce de leche/caramel). The flight went quickly and everyone queued up to use the loo since they announced that there would be no loos until we reached the ship. We then had to get into waterproof pants and boots. It was difficult especially for the older people to have to bend in the small spaces. We landed by 23h30 and then walked 1.4km to the zodiac launch station. When we got out of the plane it reminded me of Iceland with rocks and snow. Beautiful! We couldn’t take photos because the landing strip is on a Chilean air base. We took a zodiac to the ship Ocean adventurer. We did a water entrance so the boots were useful. It was very calm water and no wind so the zodiac ride was peaceful. The oldest passenger on the boat was 97 years old and this was her bucket list trip- good inspiration to keep on living!  We got into the boat via steep stairs and then checked in to our cabin 227 with two narrow twin beds, a starboard window, big double closet and a bathroom. Not so bad for an adventure cruise!
17th December - The second group arrived around 6h and the expedition lead Alison (Ali) announced that breakfast would be from 6h30 until 8h30 and then a mandatory meeting at 10h. We went back to sleep until 7h20. It felt a bit like camp with loudspeaker announcements. But it was much better than camp because looking out of the porthole at any time of the day promised stunning icy scenery in the 23 hours of daylight. We had a briefing and safety meeting at 10h and the expedition team introduced themselves. The ship Dr said the three most common problems are flu, bruises and seasickness. We are far away from any medical care so health insurance can be very expensive especially for the elderly....
We went back to our cabin and prepared for the abandon ship drill, a requirement. That went pretty quickly, though a few people went to the wrong place. The view of Greenwich island, part of the south Shetland islands, was beautiful. We passed a giant glacier and some penguins jumping out of the water on the side of the boat. The jumping is called porpoising - imagine mini dolphins jumping out of the water. Penguins are much more graceful and speedy in the water than on land. Amazing!
We went out on a cruise in the zodiac to see a giant iceberg and there were some penguins sitting on it and jumping off, gentoo and chinstrap penguins. The scenery was stunning with rocks, glaciers and the sea. Then we landed on the rocky beach of Point Fort and walked around to see penguins. One friendly chinstrap penguin, who the guide said they’ve named Charlie, came over to check us out. Many penguins were sitting on their nests as it was just a little early for the main hatching time. Ali the expedition leader introduced some of the staff specialists who gave short lectures on topics like whales and glaciers. Then she explained the upcoming weather conditions and plans for the next day. The plans are always changing depending on the weather and the ice, which can make some passages unpassable. The plan was to go through the Lemaire channel and get to Petermann island then visit Jougla and Goudier islands. We had dinner right after the presentations. I had antipasti salad, red snapper and ginger crème brûlée plus a scoop of coffee ice cream. The food is really delicious on board and we had not at all expected the gourmet dining and excellent service, so it felt like a real luxury.
18 December- We woke up at 6h30 and dressed warmly to go outside and look at the views of the Lemaire channel. It was a stunning clear day and we could see beautiful snow covered mountains and lots of ice. There were penguins swimming and jumping out of the water. We saw a fat weddell seal sunning itself on an iceberg. The captain broke through some ice and we made it partially through the channel but then the ice was too dense so we turned around and went back. Instead we went to Hidden bay for some zodiac cruising. Our driver Jens went very fast so it was fun but very cold! We heard the cracking of moving icebergs but didn’t see any calves. We got back to the ship and had a rest in the cabin until 15h. Sophie from the British antarctic heritage trust at Fort Lockroy came on board to give a short talk. There are 4 women in the team that stay here for 4 months from Nov til March. They run the British post office and museum there, and maintain the site. They have no running water so usually take showers and get fresh food from the passing ships. Tough life! We took the zodiac to Goudier island and visited Fort Lockroy museum and post office. The museum is a restored British research hut from the 1950s and still has canned food from back then including beans and Branston pickle! Our postcards were sent from the post office and it cost $1 to send one anywhere in the world. I walked to see more penguins but the snow was very deep so it was difficult. The lady there told us to try to fill in any deep holes because penguins can fall in to these post holes, get stuck and die. They make a lot of funny sounds, and they steal pebbles from each other’s nests. Very amusing to watch their natural behaviour. People on the cruise were very helpful in general and assisted the more elderly passengers since the zodiacs landed on rock, ice, or sand without any docks. We took a zodiac to the next island Jougla. It was a tough landing with a big step and slippery ice and rocks, then deep snow. It was quite a feeling of awe to make the first footprints in the fresh snow. I walked to see some old whale bones and penguins and cormorants on the rocks. The penguins use their little highways to go between rocks and to the water.
When we got back to the ship, it was time for the pre dinner cocktail with the captain. We got to see him and the main crew. They do an incredible job to take us to these remote places and navigate the ice. For dinner, I had seafood cioppino, prime rib with Yorkshire pudding and baked potato, and a beautiful French opera cake. Two of the expedition team sat with us. Jason from Arizona is a crevasse and ice expert. His job would be to scout the path for tomorrow’s walk to a viewpoint at Neko harbour. Acacia is the photographer and made the photo journal for the trip. She’s from Alaska, works the Arctic season too and spends free time often in Scandinavia. She must like the cold weather!
19 December- We woke up at 6h50 to get ready for breakfast at 7h30. The ship had already anchored in the bay for the landings on the Antarctic continent at Neko Harbour in Andword bay. Until then we had made landings in Antarctica but on various islands. The continent was the big bucket list goal for many of the people on the ship.
There was a rotation of group orders, although many people cheated and jumped on the first boat. My British training makes me follow the queue system out of a sense of duty! This time, we were luckily in the first group of zodiacs to the Neko Harbour Landing. We had to exit the zodiacs quickly because the glaciers can calve (break off into icebergs) and cause sudden waves. The scenery around was beautiful with mountains, glaciers, snow and icebergs. The snow was falling slowly. We took a photo with the Antarctic continental flag since it was our first time on the continent and not an Antarctic island. I took the steep path up the hill to the viewpoint and it was tough but worth it. The glaciers have lots of crevasses and a bright blue colour due to the light reflection. They’re also very active and pieces crack off/calve quite often. I was hot and sweaty by the top of the hill and took off my jacked to just (literally) chill out and enjoy the view until it was time to go down. The snow was deep and slushy. We took a zodiac cruise with Tom, the marine biologist. His specialty is whales and he spotted a minke whale and we saw it briefly breach then it went under never to be seen again. We then went to see a close-up of a Weddell seal and a penguin sitting together on an iceberg. Leopard seals are a penguin predator but Weddell seals are friends. It was fun riding and crunching over small icebergs in the zodiac. We went back to the ship and warmed up with some tea. Then it was time for lunch and the polar plunge. I watched a few people jump in but I decided that was one once in a lifetime opportunity that I could miss out on.
We passed via the Arera channel. We cruised with Cam in a zodiac for an hour and saw a seal, lots of gentoo penguins and a sailboat with an Austrian couple who came out to say hello. We chatted with them and they’d been sailing continuously for 8 years mainly with each other for company. They had just reached the Antarctic via the Drake passage a week ago. Impressive!
We saw a lot of huge glaciers and they were very blue and beautiful, and shaped by the movement of the water. Then it was our turn to visit Cuverville island. We landed and hopped from the water up onto the snow. I went up a small hill and the view of the penguins and icebergs was stunning! I could also see the sailboat. Then I walked the other way to see more penguin colonies. They’re so noisy and smelly, but also very cute! They have well established penguin highways from the water to their nests and some of them climb up a big hill. They have their nests high on the hills because that’s where the snow clears first. Sometimes the penguins decided to use our walkways and even laid on their bellies for awhile, so we had to wait until they moved since they always have the right of way. The day went by so quickly! Tom gave a short talk on seals then Acacia gave a short talk on photography. A passenger named Casey, who has been on the show Bachelorette, gave a talk about his project which was to travel to all 7 continents using commercial airlines in a world record time. He has a website 7 in 72 and has set the Guiness book of world records. He also applied for a drone permit and took some amazing drone footage especially the bird’s eye views of the areas. Ali gave us an update on the weather and plan for tomorrow which included Deception Bay, an active volcano, and a Polish research station on an island which has Adelie penguins.
We went straight outside for an outdoor BBQ dinner. It was cold but the scenery was stunning around us and the sun came out just then. There was so much food and mulled wine. I had a burger, salad, seafood skewer, rice, beans, corn on the cob, curry vegetables, chocolate brownie and bread and butter pudding. Each day is so full of amazement that it is tiring in a good way.
20 December- We woke up at 5h and it was tough to get up but we got dressed and went outside in the rain to see the narrow entrance (bellows) of Deception Island. It is an active volcano and we sailed into it to land at Whalers’ bay. We got out on the zodiacs around 7h30 and walked around the old whaling station. There are a lot of old decrepit buildings including a World War 2 hangar. The wind picked up quickly and the rain was icy. I was on one of the last two zodiacs and they packed it with 15 people (normally we had 10) to hurry back to the boat. The wind was blowing at 70 knots! We missed the landing ramp the first time and had to go back a second time. I was soaked and had to hang everything up. The boat was rocking a lot as we sped along to Arctowski station on king george island to see the Adelie penguins. Then at 11h we went to listen to Paola’s talk about penguins and other animals too. Antarctic toothfish are also known as Chilean sea bass. They are part of the food chain and are eaten by seals and fished (overfished) for humans.
Sometimes the penguins present gifts of stones and food to their partners. They also steal stones from each other’s nests. If a penguin partner doesn’t return with food then the other parent will have to abandon the egg to eat. Survival strategies in the harshest of climates. Intriguing facts!
We went back to the room briefly then went to the lounge to hear the disembarkation process. The airline uses the IFIS website for the weather and SCRM is the Chilean Air base on King George island. We planned to leave in the morning on the plane that brings the next passengers but it depends on cloud cover and the weather.
We landed at the black sand beach and disembarked at Arctowski Polish research station. We could see an Adelie penguin colony on the rocks and with the zoom and binoculars we could see a few penguin chicks. So cute, grey and fluffy! We also saw a lot of penguins on the beach and in the water. There were chinstrap and gentoo penguins around so all three species we had seen during this trip. We saw some whale bones which look very artistic with some of the only green algae visible in the mostly barren rocky areas.
We went back to the ship and the seas were very rough and rocking the boat a lot. It was difficult for people to walk. It was our last dinner on board and we had delicious food and excellent service as we had at every meal. The head of the service crew introduced everyone as they marched in to Despacito. Wow can’t believe it’s already the end of the Antarctic holiday adventure!
21 December- The alarm went off at 5h30 and it was very early! We got dressed and finished packing our checked in luggage. We had to put it outside by 6h. I picked up the China Great Wall station mobile signal briefly and a text came through but no WiFi until Punta Arenas. It was nice to be disconnected for a week. We had to get our carryons and move out of the cabins so we sat up in the main lounge with everyone else. At around 10h the first flight got called to board the zodiacs and go to shore. Then around 10h30 we got called to board the zodiacs and head to shore. Last zodiac ride was fun with Jens driving. We had to wait outside in the cold and wind for nearly 2 hours until we could board the plane and get in the air. As soon as the seatbelt sign went off everyone got up to use the toilets. Neither of the two toilets was flushing so that was kind of gross. The plane in general was a bit dirty cuz they do such quick turn around. We were just hoping that they actually checked maintenance enough.... The flight was only two hours so pretty quick. We got to Dreams Hotel in Punta Arenas and checked in then relaxed in the room until dinnertime with a nice seafood soup at Los Ganaderos.
22 December- We had a day in Punta Arenas as a buffer in case the flight back from Antarctica was delayed. We did some souvenir shopping and then I walked to see the cemetery and pick up some empanadas from Roca Mar for a midnight snack. We ate lunch at Le mercadito in the municipal market again.
23 December - We checked out around midnight and the Taxi came at 00h30 to drop us at Punta Arenas airport. When we went to drop luggage the lady asked if we wanted to take an earlier flight to Santiago at 1h26 so we said sure. We waited for awhile there then had another flight Lima and then finally on the way back to Los Angeles.

Tips to Select the Right Charter Boat
Tumblr media
Fishing charters are the stuff memories are made of. Getting away from everyday life and doing something special as a group – there’s really nothing like it. This could be a regular event or a one-off thing. Either way, you want to choose the right charter and enjoy your dream day on the water.
Hate 2 Lose ,Stuart Florida Fishing Charter, offers charter boat in Stuart, Florida. We make sure that you are always enjoying the sun with our Stuart, Florida Charter boat trips and also private fishing charter in Stuart, Florida. Want to feel a bend in that rod immediately? Willing to pay your way to fishing success?
How to Choose a Fishing Charter
1. Location
Pick a charter that’s close to you, or stay with your friends,  on the West Coast of Florida.
Hate 2 Lose Sport Fishing Charters, Stuart Florida, a Premier Fishing Charters offers one of the most exciting outdoor adventure experiences.
2. Types of Fishing
Inshore Trips. Stay in sheltered waters near land. The fish are smaller and the sea is calmer. Short trips offer plenty of fun, so this is a great option for first-timers or young kids. That’s not to say that pros will get bored – many of the world’s top game fish live inshore, too.
Offshore Charters. Take you so far out that you completely lose sight of land. This is serious sportfishing and usually lasts the whole day. The fish are big and mean. The water can be rough. Offshore fishing is perfect for confident anglers who are looking for a challenge.
3. Trip Duration
The longer you spend on the water, the greater your chances are of getting into fish.
You’re not guaranteed more fish on an all-day charter. The time you plan to spend on a boat is also of major importance at this point, since a weekend at sea can be survived on a somewhat smaller boat, while two weeks cruising vacation can work out well only if everyone has enough space to live comfortably.
The duration of your rental can also affect its cost, as some charter companies offer discounts for longer rental periods, so be sure to decide on this before you start your search.
4.The Captain
His experience, knowledge, and hard work will ensure his guests will have the adventure of a lifetime while reeling in the fish of their dreams
Whether it's trolling for Wahoo or Tuna, reef fishing for Snapper or Grouper, deep dropping for Swordfish, kite fishing for Sailfish or Marlin, or filling the fish box with Mahi in summer months, he and his crew can customize any charter to suit your desires.
5.Boat type
Complete retrofit in 2021. Twin Detroit Diesels with over a 600 mile range. 2 heads, 2 staterooms, a very spacious salon with air conditioning, 42 flat screen with DTV, new carpet, new upholstery, and new granite countertops
Fully rigged with over 40 rods and reels for all fishing occasions including custom fighting chair.
Being as specific as possible to the kind of fishing you want to do will help make sure you’re in the right boat for the trip you’re planning.
Some charter boats have restrictions as to how far they can be from shore, so your deep-sea dreams might not be possible if all the charter has are canoes.
Every charter service is unique and most specialize in a certain style of fishing. Consider the following aspects of your trip and you can narrow down your search massively.
6.Amenities
Other things to keep in mind are making sure the boat has proper safety equipment and whether or not the boat has a fighting chair.
7. Conservation practices
Whether or not you keep a fish is up to you, but you want to be sure your captain knows what’s in season and what isn’t, what any size restrictions may be, whether or not you can keep a certain fish or what the boundaries of any protected waters may be.
8. Cost
Know your budget better than anyone and there’s always the temptation to go with the cheapest option you can, but there’s a fine line between getting your money’s worth and getting what you pay for.
After you’ve decided on people and money, its time to think about the kind of boat you’re looking for and the purpose of your rental.
If you’re planning to sail with a professional crew onboard, go for a beautiful and luxury-equipped sailing boat where relaxation is guaranteed.

Should You Charter Packers And Movers Hyderabad For Your Upcoming Walk?
Moving needs a lot effort. For the people who had already moved for once within past few years knows the story very well; but for those who are relocating for the first time is still unknown to the difficulties one face when packing the house and moving to a new one. Eventually with the packers and movers Hyderabad simply just stays free with every load regarding to pack and move. Local Movers and Packers in Hyderabad serve you a wide range of services indulging from basic of moving services like transport service, warehousing service and etc. but also other full service options that can help you to diminish the load of move is also served from us. Whether you pick Local Packers and Movers Hyderabad for your next move, is a critical decision to take when two other options are running in your mind. Before we go over, what can you expect from your moving company and why should you hire Packers and Movers Hyderabad for your upcoming move?
What are professional packers?
Understand the thing- packers and movers in Hyderabad provide you two different services:
·         Packing - which is served by packers
·         Moving - which is served by movers
So getting you a complete blend of shifting Packers and Movers Kukatpally Hyderabad serves you a combo of relocation services. Traditionally professional packers are responsible for expertly cloaking and boxing up the household items. Unlike us packing is not a once-in-a-while job for them; this is a job they’ve been doing since long which makes them experience of doing this job. As such, they can pack productively efficiently than us who wrap the bags once in a while when needed.
What favors and assistance can you expect from professional packers?
The exact services what packers provide can be more effectively described by the company itself, but what Packers And Movers Hyderabad to Pune  serves you which are already noted with every #packing quotation are described here. Remember this can be manipulating more with your demands.
·         Professional movers and packers Hyderabad arrives with all the packing materials your move will requisite like boxes, packing paper, packing tapes, bubble wraps, containers and air-filled plastic cushioning.
·         They will roam room by room wrapping your each household item protected.
·         They’ll tag each box based on the room that its goods belong to the particular room; so that on your moving day, your movers do not hassle you by opening every single box and then asking where to re-assemble it.
Obvious there lays some limits to the services what professional packers can offer you. While you’re ready to pay extra over the contract for some additional services, there are some things which you shouldn’t expect when you hire packers:
·         They will not help you take inventory of your household goods what to keep and what to donate.
·         They’ll not offer you detailed tags over boxes describing what’s in each box.
Note: when you plan to hire packers for your move- the #fast and #best #Packers and #Movers #Hyderabad advice you to before they arrive to location, take a step to get rid of your clutter. Because when the packers will arrive they’ll just simply warp everything they see because waiting for so long is not in their policy, after all they’ve further commitments to go for. So after the packers arrived and you’re still busy to remove the clutter they’ll wait for a moment and will start packing (may either cover all the unwanted goods which you left and seen to them) or they’ll just leave that moment and hardly come back. Also make sure that sometimes they’re charged on hourly basis so making them wait is disadvantageous to you.

Motives to hire packers for your next walk
·         If you’re relocating out of state and have to make the shift yourself before your goods comes along. Mostly people make plans to which they settled first and then tend to receive the household goods later like within few days. If that’s the case for you, it may be more pocket friendly to have your stuffs wrapped professionally and then got shipped to your destination. This way you can give time to clean your new house and get it ready for next decoration. So instead of travelling back to your home and taking view of your goods, you can leave one your partner to note everything and trust the best and safe household shifting services in Hyderabad to wrap and ship your household goods safely.
·         If you’re disabled. Packing contains intensely physically tasks like you’ve to raise heavy objects to get it clean and pack for move. So if you’ve any physical problem like joint issues, muscle pain, strains or any other disability which stops you to stand and bend for long instant then you’re best to hire Professional Packers and Movers in Hyderabad for packing services who can do it for you.
·         If you’ve to move in a hurry. It’s typically not possible to wrap the house in a well or less time. In some storylines when moving in hurry you need some extra hands to help and if you don’t have friends and family to reach out you and help you to pack in hurry and move then in that case hiring packers as an helping hand will worth your decision. Hire the professional packers and movers in Hyderabad to help you out in packing the house when moving in hurry.
·         If you don’t have time to pack yourself. Due to work, school, kids and other commitments is your reason that you can’t make out time to pack yourself then it’s just fine to accept. Because not everyone is free in entire day to make our time to pack house for move. Especially when you’re single or a small nuclear family with working commitments, sacrificing time in packing becomes steely to you. Also many essential jobs are needed to be done before you move; so if that’s the case then again hiring packers becomes essential to you.

Tumblr media
The debate pits parents against parents, schools against schools, and communities against communities. School board meetings have turned into raucous events that sometimes descend into boisterous demonstrations. And public officials swipe at each other in social media and opinion columns, accusing one another of having ulterior motives.
"None of this was in the "dad manual" when I started a family," Sanders explains, making quote marks in the air. "I'd much rather go back to being a PTO dad planning the Christmas party rather than going to meetings and shouting my head off to save our school."

"We love Inglewood Elementary," Sanders says, although he admits, "not all parents agree with me."
Apparently, neither does the state of Tennessee.
We've Made Your School a "Priority"
As state media outlet The Tennessean reported recently, low scores on student standardized tests and other indicators led the state to designate 15 Metro Nashville Public Schools, including Inglewood, as "Priority Schools."
Advertisement:
"Priority Schools are the lowest-performing 5 percent of schools in Tennessee," according to the state's education department, making them "eligible for inclusion in the Achievement School District or in district Innovation Zones. They may also plan and adopt turnaround models for school improvement."
The plain English translation of that benign bureaucratic speak is that Inglewood has been labeled a failure by the state, which gives the state or district power to do something to it. Often, the something that gets done to a Priority School in Tennessee is to fire the school's principal or teachers, hand the school over to a charter school management organization, or a mixture of the above.
One of the potential options the district has chosen for Inglewood is for the school to be taken over by the KIPP nationwide charter school management organization. The outgoing district superintendent, Jesse Register, has already disclosed the district has signed a contract with KIPP, only he won't say which school KIPP is destined to take over.

Sanders is not the only Nashville parent dreading the fate that could befall a local school.
"Not In Favor Of Chaos"
Across town, Ruth Stewart shares a similar perspective about the fate of a different Nashville elementary school.
Like Inglewood, Kirkpatrick Elementary has also been designated a Priority School and potentially targeted for a charter takeover. Superintendent Register has promised to announce soon which of the two schools – Inglewood or Kirkpatrick – will be turned over first.
Advertisement:
Also like Inglewood, Kirkpatrick serves a disproportionate percentage of children from low-income African-American and Hispanic households. Although Stewart does not have a child attending Kirkpatrick, she speaks admiringly of its teachers, describing how they "take on the duties of social workers – make sure kids get home okay, make sure they have warm coats to wear in the winter."
Stewart, who is white but has an adopted African-American child, says, "Kids at Kirkpatrick don't get the privileges my kids have gotten. So why aren't we divvying up resources equitably to help solve that?"
At a lunch spot in West Nashville known for serving healthful fare, she speaks about her situation in Metro Nashville Public Schools. Between forkfuls of a salad of chicken and mixed greens she describes the "chaotic" situation in Nashville, contrasting it often to what she is familiar with in the practice of medicine. She is a physician.
"Nothing has been transparent about the current agenda. This sows anxiety and division in the community," she says.

Stewart sees the consequences of new education policies in Tennessee as having a "negative impact on people's feelings that schools are part of the community … I'm not sure what to do, but I'm not in favor of chaos."
Nashville has two middle schools facing a similar fate. The two schools, Neely’s Bend Middle Prep and Madison Middle Prep, have both been placed on the state's Priority list, removed from the oversight of the Nashville district, and grouped with other troubled Tennessee schools in the state's Achievement School District.
The ASD was founded as part of Tennessee's effort to qualify for the Obama administration’s Race to the Top grant.
What state takeover means to the students, parents and teachers of Neely’s Bend and Madison is that one of their schools – again, to be announced at a later date – will be handed over to a charter management operation.
Advertisement:
Because the ASD is a charter authorizer, it can designate any of its schools for charter takeover, and indeed has done so numerous times. In fact, the superintendent of the ASD, Chris Barbic, is the founder and ex-CEO of the Yes Prep chain of charter schools. When the ASD rolled into Memphis, another troubled Tennessee school district, the ASD immediately began targeting the district's schools for takeover by charter operations, as a 2013 report from The Atlanticrecounted.
Enforced charter takeovers like the ones being carried out in Tennessee are happening across the country.
We're All Nashville Now
The debate in Nashville echoes themes the nation has heard from New York City and Los Angeles where students, teachers and parents have engaged in prolonged battles over decisions to co-locate charter schools in public school buildings.
Advertisement:
In Newark, New Jersey, a state-imposed plan enacted this year intends to move charter schools into the district's facilities. In Detroit, the state agency in charge of that city's schools has a new plan to convert over 30 percent of the districts into charter schools. In Wisconsin, a bill has been introduced in the state legislature that would make all public schools deemed to be "failures" become charter schools.
Most recently, the school district of York, Pennsylvania, made national headlines when the state announced the city's schools would be turned into an "all charter" district. As a report at The Daily Caller explained, a legal path has been cleared for a state "recovery officer" to proceed with "a plan to place all of the city’s public schools under the control of Charter Schools USA, a for-profit school management company."
The idea of an "all charter" school district has been tried before, in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. The results were disastrous as the charter operator promptly alienated most of the teachers and then backed out of the deal. But that seems to deter no one directing these efforts.
In every one of these charter takeover cases, there have been large numbers of students, parents and teachers who have spoken out in opposition.
Advertisement:
And although takeovers of "failed" schools are often justified as rational responses to "urban decay" or "underutilization," none of these arguments apply to Nashville. Nashville is a city that is experiencing strong growth in population and employment, and public schools are experiencing problems with overcrowdingbecause of high demand for their services. Nashville is a neither a union bastion nor a hardened, bitter battleground of Big City politics. So it's not hard to imagine that if a fight like this can break out here, it could break out anywhere.
What policy leaders and charter advocates contend, in nearly every one of these takeover cases, is that they are following the reform model from Louisiana's state-operated Recovery School District, which took over most of New Orleans' public schools after Hurricane Katrina.
Thing is, there hasn't been another Katrina. Instead, there's been a manmade disaster.
Due to the influence of federal policies, such as Race to the Top, and relentless marketing by charter school advocates, virtually every state has a methodology for designating "low performing" schools as Priority and targeting them for radical solutions like charter school takeover.
Accountability Gone Awry
Back when these plans for targeting the nation's "low performing" schools were unveiled by the Obama administration, the National Center for Education Policy, an education policy research think tank affiliated with the University of Colorado, Boulder, warned in a brief that the Obama plans's accountability system, "which determines how schools will be evaluated" is not substantiated by any legitimate research, and that the "intervention models for low-scoring schools is not developed, much less supported in the research."
Indeed, the notion that education performance of public schools can be turned around by taking them over and converting them to charter schools or co-locating charters in their buildings is particularly unproven.
Even in New Orleans, mass charter conversion has been "disastrous," writes Kristen Buras for The Progressive. After the charter takeover of NOLA public schools post Katrina, the state began issuing letter grades for all schools in 2011, and 79 percent of charter schools in the New Orleans district received a “D” or “F.” In 2014, RSD-New Orleans schools are still performing below the vast majority of the state’s other districts at the fourth and eighth grades in subjects tested by the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program, including English language arts, math and science.
In Tennessee, state takeovers of public schools have so far yielded mostly disappointing results too, according to math teacher and statistical whiz Gary Rubenstein. "They are still in the bottom 5 percent, dead last with the second to last district not even close to them," he writes.
Despite these troubling results, there are powerful advocates for continuing charter takeovers of public schools. Takeovers and other methods of proliferating charters, such as vouchers, have helped push the number of charter schools in America over the 6,400 mark in 2013-14, with more than 2.5 million students enrolled, according to The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. Charters are now the fastest growing segment of our public education system.
Doing the Math
In Nashville, charter school performance varies widely, with some performing significantly better than the rest of the state and better than Nashville public schools, while others are at the bottom of state rankings.
But academic performance doesn't seem to be the most important factor in selecting which schools are targeted for charter takeover and which are not, at least not in Nashville. As Nashville school board members Amy Frogge and Jill Speering point out in a recent op ed, one of the middle schools targeted for state takeover, Neely's Bend, performs better on state assessments than many other Nashville schools do – and better than schools already taken over by the state.
Also, charter schools may pose a drain on public school finances. According to a recent studyconducted by the Florida-based research firm MGT of America, growth of charters will harm Nashville public schools overall. "The loss of even a single student will reduce the revenue received," the report states, because "the reduction of a single student in a classroom will not alleviate the need to have a teacher in that classroom … In fact, the per-pupil cost for that classroom or school would increase because the fixed expenses would remain, but the revenue to support them would be decreased."
The report estimates that the net negative fiscal impact of charter school growth on the district's public schools would be more than $300 million in direct costs over a five-year period. This figure is likely an under-estimate, the report contends, as there are "other indirect costs" of charter schools related to administration that are "not easily identified." Meanwhile, there are no new revenue sources being considered to offset the additional costs. "There appears to be an assumption," the report notes, "that the central organizations supporting the charter schools can continue to do so within existing resources."
The MGT report is mostly supportive of the idea of charters and recommends ways to ensure their success without harming public schools. Nevertheless, it concludes, "New charter schools will, with nearly 100 percent certainty, have a negative fiscal impact" on the school district." (emphasis added)
When It's Your Kid
The numbers arguments don't even begin to capture what's driving a lot of parent anxiety in Nashville.
"I'm not anti-charter," Jai Sanders declares. "I don't advocate closing any East Nashville charters." But he does have specific reservations about turning Inglewood into a KIPP charter school.
He strongly objects to the heavy handed, top-down way Nashville Metro school leaders have gone about the process of pushing charter governance on neighborhood schools. For instance, he is worried about the principal of his child's school, who he is happy with, being forced out.
Sanders says the district has enough charter schools as it is. "Charter schools should be something on the periphery. They were originally supposed to be incubators of ideas and not the standard for schools in the community."
Sanders also has "philosophical problems" with the way some charter schools "go about their business," specifically how they are governed by boards of directors rather than school boards. "This way of doing education doesn't seem like education to me."
Sanders mentions KIPP charter schools in particular, as a model of education he has "reservations" about. KIPP is known for practicing an approach to schooling loosely labeled as "No Excuse," which relies on strict behavioral controls of students. He describes KIPP's approach as a "military school for civilians, with the extreme tracking of students, requiring SLANT, and no excuses." SLANT is a foundational practice in KIPP schools that dictates students must Sit up, Listen, Ask and answer questions, Nod and Track the teachers' movements. There have been numerous, verified reports of KIPP and other charter schoolspracticing the No Excuse approach, using very harsh disciplinary practices, including high rates of suspensions and expulsions, on students.
Ruth Stewart – who describes herself as "anti-charter" but "willing to work with my pro-charter colleagues to have an outcome we all can live with" – also expresses reservations with the charter school she visited, Liberty Collegiate Academy in the RePublic School charter chain. "Not for my kid," she states. "It was very tightly controlled … eye contact, hand clapping, too controlling."
She contrasts the "controlling" environment of No Excuse charter schools to what she has observed in public schools, where she has experienced "a much more nurturing learning environment."
"I understand some parents would choose KIPP and the No Excuse approach," she says. "But something leaves me very uneasy about that kind of control exerted on children of color. So all white kids get to go to a school with a Montessori approach while children of color get eye control?
"What we all want are children who are autonomous, responsible and intrinsically motivated. But I'm not sure these types of charter schools get us where we want to go."
[Editorial note: A pro-charter Nashville parent contacted for this article declined to be quoted on record.]
Another oft-stated reservation with charter schools is their unquestionable link to increased segregation of students based on race and income.
"Studies in a number of different states and school districts in the U.S. show that charter schools often lead to increased school segregation," writes Iris C. Rotberg, a research professor of education policy at The George Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development, in Education Week.
"Even schools that employ a seemingly randomized under lottery system for enrolling students," Rotberg explains, "also choose – sometimes explicitly and sometimes indirectly – and increase the probability of segregation. They limit the services they provide, thereby excluding certain students, or offer programs that appeal only to a limited group of families."
Rotberg cites studies showing, "In some communities, charter schools have a higher concentration of minority students than traditional public schools," while "In others, charter schools serve as a vehicle for 'white flight.' … School segregation increases in both cases."
Some Nashville parents also feel charter school proliferation has led to increased racial segregation of students. "A lot of charter school rationale is based on racial diversity, but it seems to me we're getting less diverse due to charters," Stewart states.
Stewart's observations may or not be accurate. That would require statistical analysis. But parent perceptions are often stronger influencers of public opinion than statistics.
Charter school advocates understand that all too well.
Evolution of a Movement that Is "Bad for Kids"
Indeed, the rhetoric driving charter school advocacy has changed dramatically over the years as proponents of charter schools condition public perceptions to accept the expansion of these schools.
That evolution has been documented extensively in the recently published book "A Smarter Charter: Finding What Works for Charter Schools and Public Education," by Richard D. Kahlenberg and Halley Potter.
The original vision of charter schools, the book contends, was to provide "laboratory schools" to "experiment" with different approaches that could eventually be considered for adopting on a much larger scale. Two foundational tenets to these experimental schools, the authors maintain, were for teachers to have a stronger voice in determining the management of the school and for the student body to have higher degrees of economic and racial diversity than traditional public schools.
However, as states began enacting legislation to create and spread charter schools – beginning with Minnesota in 1991, then ramping up significantly under the presidential administration of Bill Clinton – there was a "more conservative vision" repeated again and again that reinforced charter schools as "competitors" to the public school system – even to the extent of replacing public schools, some argued.
"The public policy rhetoric changed from an emphasis on how charters could best serve as laboratory partners to public schools to whether charters as a group are 'better' or 'worse,'" the book argues. And "over time, the market metaphor came to replace the laboratory metaphor."
Desires to break public school teachers' unions crept into arguments for the spread of charters as well, as "conservative charter school advocates argued that having a nonunion environment was a key advantage – perhaps the defining advantage – over regular public schools," and influential voices in public school policy, such as former Assistant Secretary of Education Chester Finn, who had been initially skeptical of charter schools, gradually became strong advocates for creating more of them.
"Rather than emphasizing diversity and the possibility for breaking down segregation," the authors argue, "charter school supporters began advocating for schools to target minority and low-income group members who are demonstrably in need of better schools." The need to target these student populations has been rationalized by rhetoric to "prioritize" these students and spread the notion they need "a different set of pedagogical approaches," such as the No Excuse approach.
The authors cite numerous examples of charter schools – mostly individual charters rather than the charter school chains providing so much growth of the sector – that adhere more so to the original vision of charters. None are in Tennessee.
The authors conclude, "The current thrust of the charter school sector … is bad for kids." They recommend "changes to federal, state, and local policy" and a greater degree of "neighborhood partnerships" among charters, public schools, foundations and universities if these schools are to "be a powerful vision for educational innovation in a new century."
Enter the Koch Brothers
For sure, charter schools have become a darling of conservative politicians, think tanks and advocates.
One of those powerful advocates, nationally and in Tennessee, is the influential Americans for Prosperity, the right-wing issue group started and funded by the billionaire Charles and David Koch brothers.
AFP state chapters have a history of advocating for charter schools, conducting petition campaigns and buying radio ads targeting state lawmakers to enact legislation that would increase the number of charter schools. In an AFP-sponsored policy paper from 2013, "A Nation Still at Risk: The Continuing Crisis of American Education and Its State Solution," author Casey Given states: "The charter school movement has undoubtedly been the most successful education reform since the publication of A Nation at Risk.," the Reagan-era document commonly cited as originating a "reform" argument that has dominated education policy discussion for over 30 years.
The Koch brothers themselves have been especially interested in public policy affairs in Tennessee generally and Nashville in particular. "Tennessee is a political test tube for the Koch brothers, " the editors of The Tennessean news outlet write in a recent editorial. The editors cite as evidence the influence AFP had recently in convincing the Tennessee legislature to block a bus rapid transit system project in Nashville.
In July of last year, the Charles Koch Institute held an event in Nashville, "Education Opportunities: A Path Forward for Students in Tennessee," to provide an "in-depth policy discussion" about public education and other issues.
As The Tennessean reported, the forum was advertised as "a panel talk with representatives of charter schools and conservative think tanks," including outspoken and controversial charter school promoter Dr. Steve Perry.
Although the emphasis apparently was mostly on school vouchers, according to a different report in The Tennessean, the stage was thick with charter school advocates from Indianapolis-based Friedman Foundation for Education Choice, the Arizona-based Goldwater Institute and Nashville's Beacon Center of Tennessee.
The reporter quotes Nashville parent T.C. Weber, "who questioned the 'end game' of diverting funding from public schools" and said, "'Are you looking to destroy the public system that we already have and build a new one based on your ideas?'"
Weber writes about the event on his personal blogsite: "One of the questions asked of the panelists was what do [you] feel is the biggest obstacle … to the accepting of your vision. The reply was, 'educating parents.'”
The presence of influential conservatives from outside the city "educating" Nashville parents about what kind of schools their children need has created resentment and suspicion in many Nashville citizens' minds. Many fear the drive to expand charters is powered more by powerful interests outside the city than by the desires of Nashville parents and citizens.
We've Been 'Hijacked'
One of those suspicious Nashville parents is Will Pinkston. Pinkston, who serves on the Metro Nashville Public School board, tells a compelling narrative about good intentions gone awry and the actors who have rushed into the wreckage to exploit what they could.
Pinkston graduated from Nashville public schools and currently has a daughter attending one of those schools. Between 2003 and 2010, he was a state employee very much connected to the school policies being implemented in Nashville today.
As a staffer in the administration of former Tennessee governor Phil Bredesen, Pinkston was instrumental in devising the state's successful proposal to receive money from the Obama administration's Race to the Top competitive grant program. Tennessee was one of the earliest recipients of the grant money and has long been considered a model for other states to emulate in their reform efforts.
But what Pinkston sees playing out in Nashville is not very much to his liking. "I can say with a great deal of certainty that what has happened is not what was intended when we created Race to the Top."
"We wanted scalable solutions for every school," Pinkston recalls in a phone interview. "But the charter school movement has hijacked education policy."
In hindsight, Pinkston now sees that RTTT and its other reforms spawned a lot of bad thinking about education.
"Now we have an 'irrational exuberance' for reform," Pinkston contends, using the term Alan Greenspan coined for describing the economic speculation in the country that led to the stock market run-up in the 1990s.
According to Pinkston, the reform frenzy brought on in part by RTTT also brought into Tennessee "a lot of radical reformers who believed, 'This is our time.'"
He is particularly critical of the state ASD, which he thinks has strayed from its original purpose. "I believe in the concept of the ASD. It causes districts to reach and stretch," he says. The ASD was a "product of RTTT," according to Pinkston. "I helped coin the name of it," he claims.
However, the initial intention, according to Pinkston, was to target a small number of schools that needed the most attention and to conduct a temporary leadership change in those schools, "not to occupy them in perpetuity."
What changed that, Pinkston contends, was when state superintendent Kevin Huffman and the ASD leader Chris Barbic turned the agency into a charter authorizer. "That's not turning around a school. That's turning your back on it," he states.
Pinkston also points to the Tennessee Charter School Center as among the actors, along with the Nashville mayor, who are working to "charterize the system."
There's little doubt that TCSC has clout. Last year, the group had eight lobbyists working the Tennessee state legislature to pass a new law allowing charter schools denied locally to get approval instead by the Tennessee State Board of Education. The law passed. For this and other reasons, Pinkston has called the charter school group "a threat to public education in Nashville" in a lengthy email to his fellow Metro council members.
Pinkston contends that education policy leaders in Tennessee had originally articulated a set of priorities for charters, a narrative very much similar to what the book "A Smarter Charter" relates at the national scale. The intention was to responsibly manage the growth of these schools, tap any innovative strategies they may have, take advantage of a glut of abandoned commercial property in parts of town that are underserved educationally, and, yes, convert some low performing schools. "In some places where schools have descended into the bottom 5 percent," he explains, "we've lost our moral authority, making it proper to reach out to the expertise charters may have."
Now, what's happening to Inglewood Elementary and other Nashville schools, Pinkston says, charter conversions are being conducted like a "shotgun wedding."
"Our job is not to engineer hostile takeovers … It's immoral to force this kind of change on people who don't want it. It also diminishes the odds of success."

do u ever think about marcus' background and history and who his dad was because i do a lot
YES I DO AND SO CLEARLY DO LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, so.  Let’s break it down.  What do we know?
We know Kane’s father isn’t in the picture, and hasn’t been for a long time.  Kane never mentions him, and neither does Vera.  Nobody ever says anything about his father.  In a world where slut-shaming still exists (witness “Grounder Pounder” as Octavia’s nickname), it’s unlikely that Vera would retain her revered religious position if she had gotten pregnant by some random guy who then took off, the way we see the guards disrespect Aurora and Bellamy.  But there’s none of that energy around the Kanes, which means he’s probably dead, and has been for a long time.
We know that Marcus and his mother were close when he was young (he’s the one who tended the tree as a child) but grew apart at some point along the way.
We know the Kanes aren’t from the upper classes.  Vera’s church is small and humble and it looks like a bunch of folding chairs in a basement, and if she was a socially-important person, attending her services would be something you do to rack up points with the elite.  But the people who are there don’t look wealthy or fancy and neither does Vera.  From this it seems unlikely that Kane’s dad had a high social position; Vera seems to move very comfortably among the lower classes.
We know that Vera is full of tremendous empathy, shows no judgment of her son no matter how massively he fucks up, and is full of hope that he’ll come back to her faith one day.  She believes in redemption and forgiveness, but not in a naive way.  When she puts her arms around Marcus and lets him cry, she does so with the air of a woman who’s seen some shit.  From there, and this takes us more into headcanon territory, it makes me wonder about whether or not her marriage was happy.
We know that the closest male influence in Kane’s adult life is Thelonious Jaha, whose mental picture of him is staggeringly limited.  Jaha praises Kane’s “strength unweakened by sentiment.”  He values the virtues of being cold, pragmatic, unfeeling, because he believes that is what makes a good leader.  Kane appears, even from the beginning, to have moments where he resists that, but he doesn’t question it or fight back against Jaha until the moment Jaha stops being the guiding influence on Kane’s life and is replaced by Abby.
We know that Kane arrested Jake Griffin, knowing he had a child who would be left fatherless, and we know he arrested Clarke very shortly after her father was arrested, and we see him have very little reaction (that I can remember) to the fate of Wells.  From this, it seems that the Kane we meet in Season 1 is pretty unsentimental about fatherhood and families.
We see that Abby and Jaha wear their privilege comfortably, like people who grew up in the upper classes and just expect that the rules will bend to accommodate them.  We see that Kane is the one who is a stickler for law and order, by the book, never deviating from the Exodus Charter.
We know that S1 Kane holds himself at a physical distance from nearly everyone, like he’s wearing armor, which makes the moments where his mother holds him and where he pulls the half-conscious Abby into his arms palpably startling by contrast.  We know that by the time we reach S3, as Jaha’s influence over Kane fades more and more and his love for Abby grows and grows, that those were artificial learned behaviors.  We see him hug Pike and Jaha with his whole body when they’re reunited.  We see him place a comforting hand on Bellamy’s or Clarke’s shoulder in times of need.  We see him reach out to grab Abby’s wrist and pull her back when she’s walking into danger.  We see Kane initiating touch as a way to give comfort or encouragement or protection, and we see it come naturally to him, but we also saw from the very beginning that for some reason he forced himself to lock that away.  He doesn’t have that kind of intimacy with Callie.
We see Kane’s desperation to pull Bellamy back from Pike’s influence and the frustration he feels when he can’t get him to listen.
Okay, so those are the things that we know, or the things that we can assume from the things that we know.  Here’s what I think.
I think Kane’s dad was an asshole.  Maybe an alcoholic, maybe violent, but certainly distant and cold and uncommunicative.  Certainly it seems more likely that it’s through his dad that Kane knows all about Nygel than through Vera.  I think Kane grew up starved for touch and affection and his mother was all he had.  I think they were poor and came from somewhere like Factory Station and maybe his dad was in the guards too, or maybe worked another steady but lower-class job, the kind of job where you don’t get a lot of respect and there’s nowhere up to go and it makes you bitter and you can’t get ahead.  I think Kane’s childhood home life was terrible and he joined the guards, the way so many poor kids join the army, because it’s the only path out of the life they’re stuck in.  And I think he craved that order and certainty - craved the consistency of military organization, always knowing what time to get up in the morning and what the rules are - because he didn’t have that at home.  I think he threw himself into that career and rose through the ranks based on sheer tenacious force of will and by being the most disciplined, because he was terrified of turning out like his father.  I think he learned about what it means to be a man from his father and from Jaha and that they both taught him emotions are weak and you should box them up and put them away.  I don’t think his dad hugged him.  I don’t think he had any idea how men show affection to other men, until Abby’s presence in his life normalized the idea that people touch each other and that it’s okay, and then he realized how badly that was something he needed.  I think he’s still startled when someone else initiates touch with him - like when Abby kisses his cheek - because he didn’t grow up in a house where that was okay, the way Clarke did.  (And Abby, too, seems like the kind of person who grew up in a family where you hug people or hold their hands or kiss them to show affection.  It comes easily to her.)  I think seeing how the Charles Pike he knew has changed since coming to earth breaks his heart, and I think the sense of urgency he feels about pulling Bellamy back from his influence is because he knows what happens once you start going down that road.  I think the reason he doesn’t realize he’s become everyone’s dad - panicking about Octavia being in danger, supporting Clarke as leader, mentoring Bellamy - and he’s so overwhelmed by all the things he’s feeling in that scene where he goes to see Abby in Medical, is because he simply does not have the context for the fact that this is what good fathers do.  I don’t think he ever felt his dad worry about him - whether he was safe, whether he was turning into a good person, whether the people around him were good influences - the way he worries about those kids, and the fact that he’s surprised by it means he has no idea this is how parents like Abby feel all the time.  I think Abby was the first person in his life besides his mother that he ever trusted enough to left himself be vulnerable, show weakness, cry, ask for help.  I think he has a huge, loving, warm heart and he grew up in an environment where men were told not to show that, and he gravitated towards Jaha because Jaha is the kind of man Kane understood - the kind of man like his father was.  Maybe a little warmer, a little less hostile, because Jaha did have a child he clearly cared about, but still, a man who thinks what men do, what leaders do, what fathers do, is swallow their emotions and put their heads down and soldier on.  And I think the way Kane treats the kids - the way he listens to Clarke, takes her so seriously, the way he trusts Octavia and Harper and Miller with such incredibly important work, the way he fights for Bellamy to come back to the right side - tells us how hard he’s trying to be a better father than the father that he got himself.
And I think Abby knows all of this without having to be told any of it, and it’s part of why she loves him.

An Adirondack Wilderness All Your Own
Moments after parking our car and loading into a compact, one-propeller bush plane, my three friends and I were looking down at a lush boreal landscape, newly green after the long winter. The view of soft, wooded peaks interspersed with creeks and lakes extended as far as we could see, evoking the northern territories of Canada or Alaska.
But what lay below us was closer to home: the heart of the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, its vast wooded expanse concealing the isolated campsite where we would ensconce ourselves.
Fifteen minutes into our loud, choppy flight, the pilot banked and touched down on the surface of a still mountain lake, then ferried us to a rustic plot at the far end. He would be the last person we saw until we flew out again three days later.
Within the roughly six million acres that comprise the Adirondack state park are some 2.6 million acres of forest preserve, broad stretches of which are open to public recreation. Disappearing into the wild, far-flung corners of New York state has been a tradition that began in my childhood, when my parents learned about the boat-access-only grounds at Saranac Lake that offer visitors the splendid isolation of their own island.
Some years later, we became aware of a new, more enticing approach. Away from Lake Placid, Lake George and other more crowded regional hubs, are several smaller hamlets that provide access to a handful of exceptionally remote lakeside campgrounds reachable only by pontooned floatplanes. With round-trip charters typically priced at $150 or less per person, some of the most secluded frontiers of the Adirondack Park are accessible even to travelers on a limited budget. Over the years, this little-utilized route into sequestered backwoods sites has become a prized secret among my close friends and family, and since my maiden trip with my father six years ago, I have been back every year with a rotating cast of companions.
Car, plane, wilderness
On this trip, our group assembled in New York City, driving up from Washington D.C., adding people and collecting gear along the way. From there, we drove our rental car north, following the Hudson River before breaking off onto smaller roads that twisted and turned more and more sharply as we approached the foothills of the Adirondacks. After passing through several small burgs, each imprinted with the distinctive Adirondack architecture style, we arrived in Long Lake, N.Y., where a small shack on the side of the road serves as an airport, and a stretch of the skinny, 14-mile lake is the runway.
We planned our trip with Helms Aero Service, which has been doing business out of Long Lake since 1947. Payne’s Air Service, about 30 miles away, in nearby Inlet, N.Y., also takes travelers to another subset of lakes in the vicinity. Both are multigenerational family businesses, operating a few aging planes that take off and land from sandbox-size docks. The two are among the last charter companies in the Adirondacks that are licensed to transport campers, hunters and anglers to lakes in the park.
The campsites they service cannot be formally reserved and are available for free on a first-come-first-served basis, but the pilots keep a diligent calendar of which ones are open. In years past, many of the pilots have even helped the state steward the campsites, flying in supplies and occasionally helping stock certain varieties of hatchery-raised fish ahead of the fishing season. They also supply paddles and life jackets for those who want to use the canoes that are stashed in the various camping areas.
That the four of us could drive from our scattered homes and have an entire lake to ourselves is a testament to the remarkable success of New York state’s preservation movement. Ironically, though, the efforts that have made this singular experience possible have also taken a toll on the floatplane pilots who enable people like us to disconnect from the world.
Before 1972, commercial floatplanes were allowed to land on 57 bodies of water across the region, offering a wealth of options for visitors looking for solitude. Since then, the state has reclassified broad tracts in the park as “wilderness,” a designation that prohibits the presence of motorized vehicles. Today, floatplanes are permitted on just 15 lakes and ponds in sections of the preserve designated as “wild forest,” and only six fall in the immediate vicinity of Long Lake.
Now, with fewer flight-accessible lakes, and just two companies taking visitors to them, the experience faces an uncertain future. If the remaining bush pilots who have delivered outsiders to these sites for decades retire without others filling their roles, there may one day be no realistic way of reaching many of them.
A place of our own
Our first decision every year is which lake or pond to go to. All the lakes that are open to floatplane camping in the area are comparable in size, but each setting has its own subtle character and attributes. Some offer access to prominent hiking trails, such as Tirrell Pond, which lies along a particularly scenic stretch of the roughly 130-mile Northville-Placid Trail. Others, like Upper Sargent Pond, have islets that can be explored and even camped on, using the canoes on hand. Still others are known for good fishing, with plentiful brook trout, panfish and smallmouth bass, or geographic quirks like miniature peninsulas and beaches ideal for bird-watching and landscape photography.
Days before our flight, our pilot pointed us toward Pine Lake, a small, forked pool in a newly incorporated section of the park that the state acquired in 2013. The parcel of land that encompasses Pine Lake was previously owned by the paper company Finch, Pruyn, once the largest private landowner in New York state. But today, gaps and logging roads where timber was harvested years ago have mostly filled in, leaving seamless stands of old, soaring trees, resplendently reflected in the water.
Our campsite fell just east of Raquette Lake, around which the titans of the Gilded Age once built sprawling summer estates at the turn of the century. Camp Uncas, once owned by J.P. Morgan, and Great Camp Sagamore, the former stamping grounds of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and his relatives, are both situated on their own small lakes some 20 miles away, nearly indistinguishable from the lake we set up camp on.
Our much humbler site was also alongside the Cedar River, which we could hear flowing through gentle, nearby rapids before the river bends east and empties into the Hudson four miles downstream.
The same natural tranquillity that drew some of the wealthiest American families to parts nearby is on display everywhere. But the forests we ranged through are far more than a playground of the rich and powerful. Their history goes back thousands of years as the hunting grounds of Iroquoian and Algonquian people who occupied neighboring river valleys, and many of these people resettled in Adirondack mountain towns after being displaced by European colonizers.
Even in the centuries since, these lands have persisted as a rugged sanctum for outdoorsmen. With our tent set up and gear stowed, we paired off in canoes and paddled to a shore across the lake, where a trail leads to an old dirt road. That road continues several miles to a ramshackle farmhouse — the only remaining outpost of the Gooley Club, a hunting lodge that traces its origins to a sporting club founded in 1867 and operated until 2018 when the state removed its main complex on another lake close by.
When timbering and paper companies owned much of the land in the region, they often leased usage rights to sportsman’s clubs, allowing members to hunt there during the long stretches of time between harvesting trees. But as part of the “forever wild” provision in New York’s constitution, newly acquired lands added to the preserve are to be protected for posterity as “wild forest lands,” requiring the demolition of most existing structures like the Gooley complex in order to return the land to a wilderness state.
Today, besides the road itself, there is nothing to signal the previous presence of people. Yet somehow the image of earlier generations trekking along the same path, taking fish and game from the surrounding lands, was never far from our minds.
We settled in at our site exactly three weeks before the summer solstice, but temperatures still swung into the 40s after dark. During daylight hours, we faced near-constant attack by swarms of black flies assailing our heads and necks, leaving annoying, shallow bites. And though the black flies typically subside before July, there are always mosquitoes to swat away.
But these momentary nuisances are offset by the divine things, like the calls of loons and hoot owls we heard at nightfall, and the perfect clarity of the night sky, unspoiled by artificial light pollution. These conditions only improve deeper into the summer and autumn, as the water warms up enough to swim and the northern foliage takes on early fall hues.
Small natural mysteries are always a source of intrigue as well. Besides the birds, each evening after dark we heard a sequence of heavy splashes from the water that resonated like giants’ steps or small boulders falling from above, often coming too close for comfort. It wasn’t until we arrived back in town and talked to locals that we discovered the origin of the sounds: slaps of a beaver’s tail.
Excess and simplicity
Not only does the floatplane open up isolated sites that often don’t connect to established hiking trails, but it also makes the experience feasible for almost any traveler. Other than the tediousness of getting out of the plane, which sometimes involves wading to shore, it is a straightforward journey doable for most people of any age. And while the environs are primitive, the usual restraints campers face with regard to the weight and size of their gear don’t apply when flying in.
On my first trip by floatplane six summers ago, my father brought a cooler stocked with butter and pancake makings, intent on recreating a boyhood memory of watching a more fortunate family indulge in flapjacks and maple syrup in the Allagash wilderness in Maine. Over the years, my experiences with cooking have grown more ambitious. This year, my friends and I armed ourselves with a variety of heavy equipment such as a steel fire-top grill and a cast iron pan, things that minimalists might consider extravagant, but that open all sorts of culinary possibilities. But even with the freedom to attempt wilder feats of campfire gastronomy, we opted for a vegetarian menu of egg and potato scrambles, grilled cheese sandwiches, three-bean chili, and roasted vegetables, followed by beers and spirits after dinner.
Coming to these campgrounds sight unseen requires a degree of adaptability, as some are more rudimentary than others. As most sites in the area are set up with little more than a rock fire ring and canoes, we were pleasantly surprised to find our site by Pine Lake outfitted with a dock where our pilot could moor, as well as a picnic table — small luxuries by backcountry standards. With a proper dinner table at which to eat our meals, we moved our camping chairs out to our private pier, spending hours fishing and watching clouds merge and fray and roll over the mountain terrain.
When the fire died down, the four of us retired to our sturdy, family-size tent — not the kind we would have brought had we backpacked in from town like most campers in the park.
Over-engineered as our shelter seemed for most of our stay, it proved its worth on our final night, when a violent thunderstorm burst over us around bedtime, disturbing our days of calm. Captivated by the energy of the storm, we flipped up the tent’s vestibule, making a roof to sit under and observe. Briefly forgetting the flight and the long drive ahead of us, we sat silently for a time, enjoying the rhythmic patterns of the rain and watching the flashes beyond the treetops.
