Food & Drink in the Elizabethan Era
Food and drink in the Elizabethan era was remarkably diverse with much more meat and many more varieties of it being eaten by those who could afford it than is the case today. Storage of food was still a problem and so fresh produce was grown at home or regularly acquired at local markets. Thick sauces with strong flavours were popular and made even more varied as ingredients became more readily available from Asia. Pastries, cakes, and other sweet goodies of all kinds were greatly appreciated and often eaten between the savoury courses. A healthy distrust of water meant that ale and beer were the most popular drinks, with wine a welcome addition for the better off. While some commoners struggled, as ever, to feed their families, especially in the long winters of the 16th century CE, foreign visitors did often remark on how well-fed the Elizabethan peasantry was and how overfed the rich were compared to their continental neighbours.
Cooking & Storage
Most Elizabethan cooking was done at home but there were communal ovens in many parishes for people to take their prepared dough and have it baked into bread or to have a stew (pottage) slowly cooked. Those who could afford servants also had cooks, usually women but including men, too, at the great houses. Even the humblest of kitchens would have had such indispensable cooking and preparation aids as a large brass pot and iron pan, a spit for roasting over the fire, a milk pail and sundry containers, utensils and serving dishes for food made of wood, clay or pewter. Most cooking was done over an open fire of wood or charcoal with a large pot either stood on legs actually in the fire or suspended over it using chains. The main methods of cooking were boiling, roasting, and frying. The fourth method was baking and involved putting the dish inside a closed oven made of clay or brick much like a wood-burning pizza oven today.
Larger households stored food in giant meal chests which were airtight and used to keep such goods as grain and preserved meat and fish. In contrast, hutches ('pantries') were boxes with air-holes for keeping fresh food like cheeses. In households with a staff of servants, these chests were often kept locked to prevent unauthorised nibbling. The vast majority of the population still worked in agriculture and often had their own small plot of land for their own personal needs. Indeed, even artisans who specialised in such activities as weaving and making clothes still kept a patch of land for their vegetable garden and some poultry. Local markets supplied everything else but the larger estates would have been more self-sufficient producing their own bread, milk, cheese, meat, and fish on site.

i have a similar situation - i'm struggling to make my own correspondences, and i'm trying to draw from my pagan practices as well as my ancestral asian practice. i'm having a bit of difficulty with systematically going through a small dictionary, but maybe this can provide some ideas (and of course, if you have any critiques, i'm totally open to that as well!)
I usually just pick up any reference book and choose whatever I like the sound of and can get my hands on. I have a copy of The Encyclopedia of Natural Magic by J.M. Greer which I use a lot because it has minimal tangential waffle and is neatly laid out. I like Llewellyn's Charms, Spells and Formulas for the same reason.
For culturally relevant things, I like chinasage which has a symbol index of various flora and fauna. I'm not aware of similar resources for other parts of East Asia, apologies.
While I do think that different materials are endowed with particular virtues, I also think this is another area of magic where people get a little obsessed with categorisation.
It's not like Pokemon where lavender has +10 sleep magic points and chamomile has +12, or roses are exclusively for love and attraction and black pepper is only for cursing and banishing, and so on... It's a little more like cooking where there are many possibilities of creating a satisfying meal and yet it still depends on the individual tastes of who's partaking in it.
Cypress, yew and asphodel are strongly associated with the underworld; mugwort and wormwood are associated with night-time and dreams, but these plants will still die without the light of day. Sunflowers and oranges are very solar, but they still have roots that reach into the earth to anchor them. Chilli peppers are incredibly fiery, but they still die without water. Yarrow is for youth, love and beauty, except when you're allergic to it.
Every herb is a herb for protection, and wealth, and attraction, and fertility, and banishing – and so on, because every plant has its own strategy to survive, thrive and proliferate.
(And that's just plants, not even touching on the properties of minerals, animals, elements, colours and so on.)
They do have their specialisations, yes, and I wouldn't use mint to call on the element of fire, nor would I use coffee beans in a sleep spell... What I'm trying to say is: they're all multi-faceted, so set aside the reference books now and then, and just observe and make connections intuitively.
Reference books might tell you that basil or cinnamon or citrus (or whatever) have wealth-drawing properties.
But grass, plain old common grass, completely dominates the greenery of the earth. Crops like rice, wheat, barley and corn are staple foods that support the world's population. And dandelions, with their solar and ouranic qualities and how quickly they proliferate across an open field, are oft overlooked.
These never get listed in books, yet their literal and symbolic powers are undeniable.
Put these – grass seeds, rice grains and dandelion seeds – into a wealth working with a simple prayer. "Bless me with as much wealth as there are blades of grass on this earth, as there are grains of rice that sustain humanity, as there are dandelion seeds that fill the air in spring."
Correspondences are only part of what makes magic work. There's also your own ability and experience, the spirits you call and the relationship you have with them... I strongly favour the relationship part because reference books become less and less important, when you can just ask and the spirits will tell you what to use. Or even better when you don't have to do a spell at all, because you have spirits to take care of it in exchange for some cake.
It took me a long time to open myself up to receiving that kind of inspiration, but... honestly, don't overthink it. You know a lot of correspondences already because you interact with the world every day.
Good luck 🌿

Restore Me - Kenji POV
So I was bored and this idea randomly popped up. Just the dinner scene where Kenji meets Nazeera but in his POV.
Kenji
We’re all sitting at the table, dinner is being served. Warner in the middle with J and me on either side of him. In front of Warner is the son of the Supreme Commander of Asia, Haider Ibrahim. Even though Warner says he’s harmless, I don’t trust the guy, or trust that he’s here for any good reason.
Apparently his sister is going to be a bigger problem.
Juliette and I have no idea what to expect.
Haider seems pretty happy to be here, smiling and starting a conversation with Warner.
Who, by the way, speaks 7 languages?
I start my meal while listening to them talk, not really understanding the Arabic. The room is only filled with their quiet whispers.
For some reason Haider laughs out loud, and sips his water. Didn’t realize Warner was so funny.
“There’s always time for dinner.” He says to Warner, who uncomfortably turns away.
“Where is your sister? Why didn’t you arrive together?”
“Why don’t you ask her yourself?” An unfamiliar voice announces and everyone's eyes go to the door.
And the world stops spinning.
Air escapes my lungs.
Standing there at the door is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. Utterly gorgeous.
Her cold hard stare quietly assesses everyone in the room and I clench my jaw to stop it from falling.
For the split second that her gaze meets mine, my heart stops beating.
She’s ethereal. I’m questioning whether this is a dream or not.
Did Haider like poison our food or something?
Am I dying?
This must be real, I think, as she makes her way to the table. And she sits right. In. Front. Of. Me.
She’s so much more prettier than she was at a distance.
Oh wait this must be-
“Everyone, this is Nazeera.” Haider jumps to his feet with a smile and wraps his arm around his sisters shoulders. Nazeera does not react.
Haider says something else but I’m too distracted.
Too focused on the girl before me.
Nazeera has warm brown skin, honey dipped eyes with dark lashes. Her lips are full, and a small diamond piercing sits right underneath her bottom lip. I can’t see her hair though, it’s hidden underneath a silk shawl. Which is weird because it’s illegal?
She’s looking at her plate, I can’t see her face and I so badly want to.
“You cover your hair now?” Warner asks and finally she does lift her head. Sips her tea and studies Warner.
I don’t know why emotion just hit me hard and fast, but I find myself annoyed that she’s looking at him.
I want her to look at me, to hear her voice again.
Nazeera does not answer Warner at all, so I take the opportunity to say something,
“So you don’t think anyone will notice? That you cover your hair?”
I chew my food as she silently forks some lettuce.
Still not looking at me. I try again,
“I mean you have to know, that what you’re wearing is an offense punishable by imprisonment.”
This time her eyes meet mine and I feel all weird.
My head feels light, dizzy and I swallow a lump.
Why am I so nervous?
“I’m sorry,” she says softly, putting down her fork.
“But who are you exactly?”
I like the sound of her voice. It’s calm, steady.
And she’s speaking to me. A lick of warmth rushes all over my body.
“Nazeera.” Haider says, “please remember that we are guests-“
“I didn’t realise there was a dress code here.” Nazeera interrupts him, continues her conversation with me. I can’t believe this-
“Oh - well,” I take another bite, “I guess we don’t have a dress code here. But that’s only because we have a new Supreme Commander who’s not a psychopath. But it’s illegal to dress like that,”
I gesture to her pretty face with my spoon,
“Like literally anywhere else. Right?”
I search the table for confirmation from anyone, but everyone’s staring at me weirdly. Huh.
“Isn’t it?” I ask Warner, silently begging that he doesn’t embarrass me in front of this gorgeous woman.
He nods and I turn back to Nazeera, who sips her tea. Leans back carefully in her chair and glares at both of us. I can’t explain why the way she is glancing at me makes my heart burst.
“What makes you think I care?”
Huh.
I frown, sort of confused now. “I mean, don’t you have to care? Your dad is a Supreme Commander. Doesn’t he know that you wear that thing in public? Won't he be pissed?”
Nazeera sets down her fork again and sighs, staring only at me.
“This thing?”
“Sorry,” I apologize,
“I don’t know what it’s called.”
Nazeera smiles at me. It’s not a happy smile but wow.
I can’t breathe.
Her smile is so beautiful, so scary too.
“Men,” she says, “Are always so baffled by women’s clothing. So many opinions about a body that does not belong to them. Cover up, don’t cover up -“ she waves a hand, -“no one can seem to decide.”
Oh wait what. I think I made her mad. Great job me.
“But - that’s not what I-“ I start to explain myself but she cuts me off.
“You know what I think,” she says, still smiling at me,
“about someone telling me what’s legal and illegal about the way I dress?”
She holds up two middle fingers.
I choke on my food. Oh my-
“Go ahead,” she says, her eyes cold and angry.
“Tell my dad. Alert the armies. I don’t give a shit.”
“Nazeera-“
“Shut up Haider.”
This has taken a wrong turn.
“Woah - hey I’m sorry,”
How the hell did I manage to piss her off when she doesn’t even know my name yet?
“I didn’t mean-“
“Whatever.” Nazeera rolls her eyes, “I’m not hungry.”
She stands up gracefully. Stalks out the room without another word. Awkward silence floods the room but I’m still frozen.
In awe of her.

The remains of an American woman have been discovered inside the stomach of a shark after she disappeared on vacation in Indonesia while on a diving trip, according to a friend of the woman.
Colleen Monfore, 68, was diving with friends near the Pulau Reong island off the coast of Indonesia’s Southwest Maluku Regency on Sept. 26 when she did not resurface, Asia Pacific Press reported.
Two weeks after Monfore disappeared in the tropical waters, a fisherman spotted a shark in distress and killed the creature. Upon cutting open the shark’s stomach, the fisherman uncovered what were believed to be Monfore’s remains along with her wetsuit and bathing suit.
Initial reports indicated the shark had attacked and eaten Monfore, but a friend of the Michigan woman says that the evidence so far suggests this is likely false.
Kim Sass, who wrote that Monfore was her "very good friend" in a Facebook post, listed what is known about the case, and how it appears likely that Monfore died of a medical issue during a dive.
Sass wrote that the fisherman captured the shark around Oct. 4 near Timor-Leste, a southeast Asian country which is 70 miles away from the dive site where Monfore vanished over a week earlier.
Monfore’s remains were identifiable, according to Sass, which would not have been had the shark eaten her at the time she went missing.
While it can take days for sharks to fully digest a meal, the stomach of a shark "produces an acid that is strong enough to dissolve metal," while "large bones and other indigestible objects are prevented from going past the stomach due to the small size of the opening to the intestine," according to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Sass believes that the nearly eight-day timeframe from when Monfore disappeared to when the shark was found suggests that the shark consumed Monfore after she was already dead.
"Colleen's body was identifiable. Her fingerprints (again identifiable) are being used by our US Embassy and the local government for proof of death," Sass wrote. "This would not be possible if the shark had attacked her weeks ago."
Sass said that dive information, photos and witness accounts from two other divers and the group’s dive master show that Monfore was in 24 feet of water when the group turned around due to a change in the current. Sass added that Monfore likely had half a tank of air at that time.
"There was a down current at the turn around site, but it was manageable," she wrote. "I've easily done 1000+ dive with this gracious woman; she was an excellent diver. I don't believe it was the environment and certainly not a shark that ended her life."
It remains unclear how exactly Monfore died.
Indonesian authorities are continuing to investigate.

I was rewatching Dangerous Romance for Reasons, and there's sooo many stuff happening in the background, but this dinnertime conversation between Kanghan and his father made me think a little deeper.
Kanghan first brings up the topic of him running for the school president. His grandmother encourages him, saying how proud she'll be to have her son and grandsons be successful in their own areas.
"I could tell the whole neighborhood about it."
Very typical Asian elder talk. C'mon Asian ppl of ql tumblr, we've all heard about how the kid next door is the student representative/won an essay competition/ranked first in the exam/plays a sport in the state level/is good at singing etc etc etc right
Maybe a little very annoying (if you're not running for the school president, that is) but matches up with reality. Elders being proud of their kids' or grandkids' achievements, and more often than not pushing them to do better, to excel. You gotta do better than the other kids in academics/grades/sports/socialablity/arts etc etc
Then Kanghan's father speaks up and his words not only contrasts Kang's grandmother's (can I just call her granny from now? grandmother is too long a word) but with much of the usual way ('usual' cause I can't say every single parent/grandparent in Asia is the same) elders in Asia perceive the childrens' school life. Instead of telling Kanghan to work hard and do well, he actively *discourages* Kanghan to steer away from it.
"This kind of work is not easy, you know?"
"You don't want to do it. Trust me"
Now, I'm all for not stressing out kids. Personal experiences ahaha But this is actively restricting Kanghan from exploring and developing his interpersonal and leadership skills, which, I don't think any parent would want to do? Especially someone from the higher economic background, who would prefer their kids to be all shiny and nice. And this is also cutting off someone's chances of developing themselves, opening their wings to the world.... not the best thing a parent should do, certainly.
But it doesn't stop there. Mr. Father I forgot his name is not merely advising, or cautioning Kang. Instead, he is not leaving Kanghan with any decision to choose whether he actually wants to run or not. He's the one making Kanghan's choices, he's taking away Kanghan's agency.
His words appear to be full of care, concerned for Kang's safety. He just wants his son to enjoy his schools years fully.
"At your age, don't stress yourself out unnecessarily. Just have fun at school and hang out with your friends. Then come home to enjoy a good meal of food. Have a good night's sleep."
But, it just hits me as wrong. Idk why, maybe I'm picking too much, looking at all the wrong things and making the worst assumptions. But still, telling their children to only enjoy themselves and do nothing else... I don't feel like that's the best for their future life, not matter how much generational wealth they'll inherit. The need to show off kids is proportional to economic affluence, in my experience?? But ofc very variable
"These kind of thing suits you better. Trust me"
This line, especially. It makes it seem that Kanghan never had a choice. His father had made all the choices for his present and future based on the image of Kanghan he has created on his mind. Is his image actually true to reality? We don't know yet (it's only the 1st ep and I'm def digging too deep and pulling wild theories out of slowly-thickening-but-still-too-this air.)
Kanghan will be what his father wants him to be, what his father believes would suit him. Not so much of a caring father then, eh?
Another interesting thing is Kanghan's posture. He's tense, hunched, not meeting his father's eyes except for in quick, shifty glances. Completely different from his father's confident, smiley way of presenting himself. He's not smiling, he just listens and agrees quickly without saying a word of opposition, or bringing up his own views on the topic.
And in moments like these I wish I knew gifmaking because when these conversation is happening, Kanghan is fidgeting with the cutlery in his hand. He's nervous, stressed.
And his father, who doesn't want his son to be stressed, should atleast be able to tell how the atmosphere has turned heavy, right? but he doesn't seem t care much about stress on his son if he's the one behind the stress.
Now I'm no body language expert but these are some tell tale signs (though the context of Kang's nervousness can be due to some other history he has with his father, rather than emotional manipulation?)
"Have this, son."
And the obedient son is rewarded with a gift of affection. A show of care. Positive reinforcement. Whatever you wanna call it.
Kang tries to smile but of course he can not.
There's another thing, Grandmother, the oldest one at the table, who ought to have enough authority in the household to counter Mr Father, if not more (cause seniority, filial piety and all that), does not oppose him. Though she is not happy with the decision, and she also wants to see her grandson shine and smile.
Then we cut to the scene of Pimfah hope I'm not mistaking names again and Kanghan in the garden. Here, Kanghan seems fine, he's smiling, but he seems to have a dangerous (sadistic?but not in the fun way. also half title drop yay!) streak to him.
The whole dog discussion shivering and hugging my cats protectively.
"My father told me, if you want to tame a dog, don't be afraid to punish it to let it learn."
At first I thought he's just being his privileged rich oppress the poor talk that he's socialised into for being born into wealth.
But after thinking this way, could it be that the one getting punished and tamed, is actually Kanghan himself? With the way his father treats him, denial followed by care, and the way Kanghan does not even try to disobey his father's words... hmmm....
"They say if you hit a dog too much, it can become aggressive."
Being abused as a child lead to higher chances of the child turning abusive, a bully themselves in later life.
That said, whatever one faces in childhood or any other walks of life is NO excuse for further harming another person. Lots of abuse victims become activists, volunteers, or research into abuse prevention and participate in policy making, too.
But anyway, *if* abuse of truly happening in the father-son relationship, can we hope that Kanghan directs any resultant aggressiveness towards his father at the end of the show? Cause idk if a man of such power and wealth can be held accountable to the law... We didn't get this with Vegas but can I hope?
That said, the following dialogues has weakened my line of thought.
But then again media is always perceived differently by different people based on their socialisation and experiences so...
SO anyway, that's some of the scattered thoughts I had! This is probably not a correct observation (my guesses are never right, I'm not lucky at cards ueueue), and ep 2 will prove it wrong in a few hours. Can't say I'm not looking forward to that ehehe~ What consequences will Sailom face for his daring? Will the teacher get punched? Will Kanghan get beaten? (hopefully by Sailom or his friends and not by his father) Will Nawa get slapped? (Guy looks like he packs a mean slap, and Marc Pahun looks pretty af when he's miffed u.u) Will Pimfah have cute girlie? (I CAN HOPE), will we get to see Sailom's elder brother?
ALSO, since we have yet another politician and his rich, spoilt on the exterior son airing on Saturdays, my views have certainly been influenced, too. There are too many similarities (except Kanghan actually still has a mother figure?), so high chances I'm unconsciously projecting Senator Thattep and Tanthai's relationship on Kanghan and his father's. Maybe all they have is some coldness, or historym or issues regarding Kanghan's mother? The possibilities are not endless, but there's a lot u.u
#dangerous romance the series#dangerous romance#kanghan#sailom#hmmm#the clown makeup kit is all ready for this evening#I maybe wrong but now that I've written it all my brain is quiet atleast#ah

New volume! Thanks for keeping on! I took some notes for chapter 26!
Wukong (no more Wade Giles uwu) demands that Tripitaka receive his three meals and six teas every day. That's not bad for a mendicant ascetic! I'd quite like to be guaranteed that, hahaha! There's a typo calling him the Tank Monk later in the chapter, very funny.
It's funny how reading Pinyin, which is all anyone uses now, feels unusual, while individual trees having names like Long-life grass of reverted cinnabar seems normal. You can really get used to anything.
I was quite surprised that the immortals are described as youngish-looking! We usually imagine a Greek philosopher-looking sage here, but even Plato was a virile, hairy wrestler once, I suppose! They always carry around gourds with stuff in them; I've seen the like in movies, but were they ever made of gourds, do you think? Pumpkins weren't around in Tang times, at least I think not.
Is Eight Rules and Idiot the same character? The switching between in the same paragraph seems to go against best writing advice, but I daresay I'll not write anything that will survive 500 years! Incidentally, he quotes a saying "put on the cap to increase riches." Is that a real saying or did he misunderstand something comedically?
There are several beautiful poems about specific natural sites here, and I wondered where Chinese people would learn these. Would they have to read them? Are they carved into stones near these rivers and mountains? Is poetry a part of the curriculum? Accented Cinema on youtube said poetry is a large part of Chinese culture, and I'm jealous. We all disliked it in Norwegian class :(
These supposedly rural and simple immortals have jade tea cups and wine goblets! That sounds nice! They should redistribute them to me! Hahaha! They have eternal life, after all, and isn't time worth at least as much as money?
Also, shout-out to the peach thief! Can't believe we got another peach thief here!
1. Same! I too struggle with having that many meals and teas (no money). To be a Tang Monk...
2. About the looking young thing, East Asians have a gene whose name I've forgotten that makes them mature more slowly than other ethnicities. My biologist s/o will kill me if he knew I've forgotten the name. So yeah, in my fantasy or historical despictions even of older people, they won't have many wrinkles (in others do). Remember that Taoism is about prolonging your life, so it's only normal that saints are young looking, while in the West ™ our idea of wise and saintly is Plato, Saint Patrick, etc.
3. I think that the only original to Asia gourd is the Wax Gourd, so they might have been using that.
4. Yes, Idiot and Zhu Bajie are the same and I too dislike a bit the constant change of name. I looked up the saying in English but couldn't find anything, and my chinese isn't good enough to try to translate it back into Chinese and look it up. I know that some of you are reading the OG Chinese book, could you tell us if it's a real saying?
5. Poems are very important in all cultures I'd say, and of course also in China. People who got an education in the past not only had to learn how to write poems but also to learn them from memory. For the imperial exams you were examined on your poetry. I think normal people like you and me in China would have learnt them from memory when a passing singer said them and retained. People used to work their brains more in the past, methinks. If you cared for poetry and you were a peasant, you'd try to memorize it and say it to others so you weren't a base man, but an intelligent peasant, closer to heavens because poetry comes from heaven etc.
5. It's only normal that immortals have jade things :) Maybe they lack in other commodities, but would you rather have a precious jade cup or ten IKEA mugs? I am sure they didn't even buy it, but they just sprung out of thin air in their house when they became immortals.
Thank you for your analysis :)

Driving Profits
One of the biggest problems faced by long-distance shippers, whether they be truck, rail, air, or ship, is the back haul. Suppose you made your delivery. Now your delivery vehicle, whatever it may be, is empty. In an ideal world, there would be another load to haul back, which would make the whole proposition lucrative for those in the shipping business.
Alas, it doesn’t always work out that way, and the train loads I see of stacked shipping containers heading west on the BNSF mainline by my house possibly are empty. You know. They are on their way back to China and other Asian nations so they can be refilled with more stuff for us.
It would be nice to keep those cars full of cargo, whatever kind it is. Now if we could just figure out how to send more things back to Asia. Not all containers go back empty, but our long-term imbalance of trade implies that at least some do. We consume more than we produce, and import more than we export.
A somewhat related problem is that faced by taxi and rideshare drivers. Airports are common pickups and drop-offs. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a steady flow of those so that you never had an empty back seat? It’s not like these drivers can operate their vehicle like a bus, with people always getting on and off. No, they are doing repetitive out-and-backs, unless they get lucky and can string together customers.
Then there’s meal delivery services. A driver may be able to pack multiple orders in his or her vehicle if they are going to the same general location, but you can’t do too much of this, lest meals turn cold. And once again, you have to return to a restaurant—much like the airport—for the next gig.The result is empty vehicles, just like those shipping containers. It costs money to run empty.
Uber, though, has figured out their core business better than most. They are in the transportation business. Hauling people to and from morphed into Uber Eats, which helps connect more dots. And now they have launched their package return service, yet another transportation-related offering aimed to keep vehicles full of something, whatever it may be.
For $5 (and only $3 for UberOne members), an Uber driver will pick up your e-commerce return, and drop it off at the appropriate courier. (Uber One is a subscription service that offers discounts on rides, deliveries, groceries, etc., and costs $10 a month.) The return package must have prepaid shipping and be good to go. It is basically the complete opposite of how the package got to your porch in the first place.
Because, you know, returns can be a hassle, and they add one more stop to already busy days.
Returns is a bigger part of the equation than most people suspect. While it has trended downward the last couple of years to “only” 18.2% of online sales, it amounts to about $200 billion worth of returns a year. I am sure it is this number that Uber was focusing on when it decided to pursue this growth opportunity.
It’s a smart move by Uber, who wishes to expand into new customer markets, as well as further penetrate the ones it already serves. And with e-commerce predicted to grow 4.8% this holiday season to $221.8 billion, it stands to reason there will be plenty of returns. Never mind the rest of the year.
So I must ask the question: Are people going to pay $5 per package to make a return? At the surface, it seems like a fairly cheap convenience. I doubt I would use it, if only because there’s a UPS store only a couple of blocks from campus. It’s no big deal to swing by there. But if you live a busy life and do not have easy access to drop-off locations, then $5 may be a bargain.
There is one drawback, and that is the same as having front porch delivery in the first place: Porch pirates. It is just as possible that someone could steal your return as your delivery.
Otherwise, I see this as a win for Uber. They are working on solving a problem at the micro level. Now we need to work on the macro problem.

Do you know any history about Thich Nhat Hanh or Sister Chan Khong? Thay was exiled from his home for decades, Sr. Chan Khong was arrested, many of their students and disciples were murdered, villages where they built schools and infrastructure were repeatedly bombed, they chartered fishing boats and braved literal pirates to rescue refugees out of the middle of the ocean during war... and they never waivered from their message of peace in every word and action. MLK Jr nominated TNH for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Where do you live? There are monasteries in the Plum Village tradition (founded by TNH) in New York, California, and Mississippi, as well as a few in Europe and Asia. Go to a retreat. Sit near the monastics. Talk to the monastics. Especially hang out near where they wash the pots and pans after meals. All I can say is, that shit's real. They are genuinely the happiest people I've ever encountered, even in July in Mississippi when it's 98 degrees and so humid it feels like swimming through air, and they're washing pots next to a steaming sanitizer, all while wearing multiple long layers of heavy fabric. They're radiating happiness with every micro-expression.
I have had a chance to help some of the nuns with English. Sometimes they share journal-type writing about their day to day lives. I showed one to my daughter (in her 20s) and she cried. It's just pages of stuff like "I woke up and did some stretches to take care of my body. I walked to the meditation hall in the cool, quiet, darkness. I saw the moon and felt very happy. I saw how the dew sparkles like jewels on the grass. The breeze in the leaves made a soft sound and the birds sang..."
Once, we were there when a young monastic had her birthday. For a lark since there were a lot of lay people there, they sang happy birthday and spent a few moments talking about what a wonderful sister she is. One nun said "when I heard it was her birthday, I felt so happy! I thought about how fortunate we are to have her as our sister. I remember one day when she called me out on the balcony to show me how beautiful the full moon looked. It's so wonderful that she shared her happiness with me. I wanted to give her something in honor of her birthday, so I offered her half of my banana and we ate together." And the birthday girl is nodding and smiling this huge smile because yeah, sharing food and companionship is wonderful.
Since that day, my daughter and I never eat a banana without offering half to each other, and I'm not kidding, it makes me feel happiness and love every time.
Sometimes lay people go and stay for months. If they've been there a while, they'll also shine with wonder and appreciation for the tiniest things. If you ask them how long they've been there or why they came, you'll find out fast how real the work is. People go after the death of a child, after leaving an abusive marriage, to get off heroine after years of addiction, to find a reason to live after countless suicide attempts, or to have a place to sleep and eat after parents kick them out for their identity... Vets who fought in the Vietnam war go to make amends and work for peace. The reasons people go would justify walking through the rest of life as a half-zombie, half-human struggling to just keep on keeping on. But they stay, and practice, and find out that there can be peace in every step.
This is some kool aid worth drinking, friend. Drink the plum village kool aid. You will never regret it.

Life in Hanoi
Hanoi is different from any other city I have ever been to, and it is even distinct compared to other places I have been in Vietnam. I could post many photos and write many paragraphs but one truly cannot understand what it is like to be here without experiencing it firsthand. You have to experience the feeling of a motorbike grazing within an inch of you as you walk along the side of the road because the sidewalk has too many restaurant setups, vendors, parking, and other obstacles to navigate. To hear the sound of aunties singing karaoke in the middle of a park at night (karaoke is very popular, especially among older women who will gather in groups to sing their hearts out). To have a random dog come up and beg for your banh mi as you sit and eat on a plastic stool in an alley. To inhale smoke from a random bush that is on fire while on the way to class (true story, there are many controlled fires for cooking and trash burning but this particular unattended bush fire on my morning commute stood out). To drink Vietnamese coffee in a cafe decked out with communist decor (there’s actually a cafe chain here, Cộng Cà Phê, that’s famous for being communist-themed and it is not uncommon to see communist decor and flags in general, which can seem a little weird for Americans). To look across the street and see a goat grazing in the middle of the city. I could go on for ages listing random experiences I have had however, as I mentioned, you really have to come here and experience things for yourself to get the full picture.
Some things aren’t that different. I have found that the human tendency to forget how to drive when it rains is universal; it happens in every city in the world. Another universal human trait is sharing love and bonding through food. I have to gotten to know some of my Vietnamese classmates recently by joining them for meals where they ensure that I am well-fed. I previously raved about some bún chả I had in a restaurant, but the best bún chả I have had so far was from a stall tucked away in an alley with seating underneath a tarp that some of my classmates took me to. Befriending locals is 100% the way to the best food in Hanoi.
While I love Vietnamese food, sometimes I do miss home and seek out western food. There are a decent amount of western food options around the city. Pizza is actually fairly popular in Vietnam. Children like to come up to me to practice English and many have told me that pizza is their favorite food. This may be due to pizza and other western food being special for them. My friend who lives here said that McDonald’s is for special occasions, as it is more expensive than local restaurants. Eating locally is definitely more economical; a banh mi for breakfast usually costs around $1USD while an “American” breakfast I had the other day was about $6USD.
Another random thing that reminded me of home was Valentine’s Day, which was celebrated the same as in the US. Last week stores sold roses, chocolates, heart balloons, and gifts, and couples went out on dates. I do not have a Valentine so the only thing that I had was a restaurant serving me a cucumber heart on that day.
While I love Hanoi, there are some downsides that I cannot neglect to mention. The streets are very dirty and waste management is lacking so there is trash everywhere, leading to many areas smelling pretty bad. This coupled with generally poor air quality means, while masks are no longer required for COVID, it is sometimes nice to wear a mask outside. The skies are gray and foggy most of the time, especially since it has been winter. Since I am used to sunny South Carolina, it is sometimes sad to go an entire week without seeing the sun. Public transportation is lacking and infrastructure is very motorbike-centric. Owning a motorbike is necessary for anyone living here long-term, but since I am here temporarily I get by on foot or using Grab (Uber for Southeast Asia). Also, being a foreigner is a little hard. While I think the people on my street are getting used to me being around, I generally get stared at a lot. Touristy areas like the Old Quarter are the only places that are accustom to foreigners, but because of that there are many people around aggressively selling. I much prefer a quiet walk with stares over getting harassed. Although most places have fixed prices listed, there are still many places that will try to up-charge or scam foreigners. This is mostly an issue in the touristy areas as well, I have found the businesses around FTU and where I live to be honest.
Overall I have had a great experience so far and I have learned to appreciate things like seeing the sun when it does make an appearance.
