Nickel Creek Make a Welcome Return at Music Hall of Williamsburg
Nickel Creek – Music Hall of Williamsburg – May 6, 2019
When you get nominated for a Grammy in your teens and win in your early 20s, early retirement sounds nice. Although the members of Nickel Creek took a five year hiatus from the band, Chris Thile, Sara and Sean Watkins had not stopped making music. Thile would go on to form the Punch Brothers, as well as play and record with classical bassist Edgar Meyer. Siblings Sara and Sean released solo albums of their own and also continued to play together for their popular Watkins Family Hour set at Los Angeles’s Largo nightclub. Although Nickel Creek reunited and released A Dotted Line back in 2014, they remained busy. Thile was hand-picked by Garrison Keillor to be his successor as the host of A Prairie Home Companion, which has since become Live from Here. Both Sean and Sara played Live from Here frequently to reunite with Thile onstage, but it was far from a true Nickel Creek reunion. Sara also was occupied with a folk trio, I’m with Her, which included fellow singer-songwriters Sarah Jarosz and Aiofe O’Donovan. In the last year, she became a mother for the first time, making Sean an uncle. Treating fans to a rare run of shows in New York City, the beloved band started on Monday night with the first of two sold-out shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Opening with “When in Rome,” the longtime trio masterfully wove through their catalog as if it hadn’t been five years since their last official show together. A collective foot stomping erupted as Sara fiddled and Thile strummed his mandolin as if it were an electric guitar for one of many fan favorites, “Ode to a Butterfly.” Sean took the lead on other oldies but goodies, “Somebody More Like You” and the Grammy-winning “This Side.” As everyone in the room sang along and called out requests, Thile sincerely thanked the sold-out crowd for taking their songs into their lives and keeping them all these years. Sara joked that this is how Taylor Swift must feel when she hears all these screams, to which a fan retorted, “You are better than Taylor Swift.” A cover of Bob Dylan’s “Tomorrow Is a Long Time” hushed the room before the first chords of the classic “The Lighthouse’s Tale” jolted the audience with excitement. Not one but two encores concluded with the three stepping to the edge of the stage for an acoustic rendition of “Why Should the Fire Die?”—a fitting lullaby to a most welcome return. —Sharlene Chiu
