Max Lightwood-Bane. A long-ass fic, Part 1.

Part 2

So Ik it was a while ago that me, @brotherlipsmackariahs , @themostawesomehuman, and other people from our group chat that I am straining to remember but cannot(if you guys know please reblog) helped come up with this idea. I’m really sorry it took me so long but it is my first ever fan fiction, and I wanted it to be good, which I’m not sure it is. Anyways, you guys inspire me so much I decided to post this. Enjoy✌🏻

It wasn’t fair. It shouldn’t have been like that. But it was, and Max Lightwood-Bane couldn’t do anything about it other than sit and bask in his brother’s glory, shiny and radiating victory.

Rafael Lightwood-Bane was over there, by their parents and their friends and family, laughing, drinking and chatting about their adventures, while Max sulked by the corner, ignoring the little sting of jealousy every time someone mentioned what an ‘outstanding’ shadowhunter Rafe was. Max couldn’t take it anymore. He walked out of the dining room.

Max had been wanting to be a shadowhunter his whole life. The only dreams he’d ever had ever since he was a toddler were slaying a demon and emerging in all angelic glory, like his Dad, Alec Lightwood, his Uncles Jace and Simon, his Aunties Izzy and Clary. But there was only one problem: he wasn’t a shadowhunter. He never could be. Every time he saw a rune on his brother’s skin, every time he saw him draw a seraph blade Max couldn’t even touch, he felt the same stab of pain and rage and shame. He could never do what his brother could. He could never achieve his dream.

Rafe had just killed an Agramon demon, a Greater Demon, the demon of fear. He bested it like the perfect shadowhunter he was, with his precious throwing knives, a blazing seraph blade, and a wit he was known all through New York for. The humiliating thing was, Max was only a few blocks away on patrol duty, but arrived too late: Rafe was already there, covered in demon ichor and grinning like an idiot.

Max was livid with frustration, anger, shame, and the worst of them all: envy. He was jealous. Jealous of his brother, of all people. There had been attacks, all through New York City, and always Rafe reached there before Max was even informed of it. This was the first Greater Demon attack in years; Rafe was a hero to have defeated it. Max couldn’t help thinking of what it would have been like, for once, to be the hero, to be Rafe sitting amongst the people he worshipped, his brother himself patting him on the back and Bapa Magnus showering glitter on him. But that possibility escaped him, just because he was a warlock. And he resented himself for resenting that fact. His parents, his family, had sought him better than that. He knew there were a lot of things Rafe couldn’t do that he could, but slowly, gradually, over the years he’d come to realise that he didn’t want to do any of the things he could, that made him special. He wanted what he could never have.

He walked out of their apartment, slowly picking pace over the cobblestones of New York. Hidden from mundane eyes through glamour, he navigated his way past several buildings before reaching his destination: the Institute. He made his way back to the entrance of the sanctuary, where downworlders could come and go as they pleased. Again, a stab of pain went through him. The front gates of the Institute could only be opened by shadowhunter blood, and going through the sanctuary gates served as just a reminder of how different Max was from them.

He went up to the training room, and did what he always did when the pain that twisted his heart became too heavy a burden: fought himself to the point of exhaustion.

Interview: Yan Birch (The People Under the Stairs, Terror Tales)

Actor Yan Birch discusses his role as Satan in the indie horror anthology Terror Tales, which is available now on DVD and VOD, along with his past work in such favorites as The People Under the Stairs, Slumber Party Massacre III, Death House, and more.

Can you begin by telling us a little bit about Terror Tales and how you got involved?

Terror Tales is a great anthology film with three different tales. I play Satan in the last tale, called “Epidemic.” It’s a shout-out to older films like Creepshow, and I believe director Jimmy Lee Combs really nailed it with the ‘80s look and feel throughout the movie. I was actually approached on Twitter and got hooked up with Jimmy. We had a few interesting conversations, I decided to jump onboard, and I’m glad I did. Jimmy was wonderful to work with.

What kind of preparations did you do to play the devil?

I wanted to do my own take on Satan, since this role has been played thousands of times before me by great actors who have put their own spin of comedy or darkness on it. I left myself open to what the character was really saying in the dialogue as a dark human being, and then added elements of creepiness. It felt more organic for the character to make it a natural progression of the unfolding of evil the further into the story we got, since I play him first in human form and then in full transition as Satan.

The film features fellow genre favorites Lynn Lowry, Felissa Rose, Jonathan Tiersten, Ari Lehman, and Helene Udy. Did you get to work with any of them?

In this particular film, I did not get to work directly with any of them, but I have known Felissa and Jonathan for a long time, and its always fun to work together. It’s great to have your friends in a film, even if you don’t always get to work the scenes together.

You also worked with many horror icons on Death House. How was that experience?

Death House was a great experience, and it was like one big family on set. I knew most of them from before this job as well, and it was great hanging out. The most fun we actually had was between scenes, when we all just sat around catching up on our lives and sharing personal anecdotes. That was definitely fun.

You're best known for playing the Stairmaster in The People Under the Stairs. How do you feel reflecting back on that film?

I owe so much to Wes Craven and this film. It has given me more than I could have ever imagined when I first got the part. It was great fun, and I was fortunate to become close with Wes. We had a wonderful friendship all the way up to his passing, which was way too early. This film also gave me life long friendships with Sean Whalen, Brandon Adams, and Kelly Jo Minter. We do a lot of horror conventions together, and they feel like family. That film is still the best experience of my life in this industry.

What did you learn from working with master of horror Wes Craven?

I learned so much about the art of acting and the importance of patience, emotions, truth, being real, taking chances. And just being calm, stepping back a little, and knowing that everything is going to be alright, no matter what choice I make.

You had a small role in Slumber Party Massacre III as well. What do you recall abut that experience? Were you familiar with the other Slumber Party Massacre films?

This was my first feature in the US, and I was beyond excited to book a film. The fact that it was a Roger Corman movie did not exactly make it any less exciting! I actually slept three nights on a bus bench to get the feel of being homeless to prepare for the character I was playing. I went all out on that one! [laughs] At that time I was not familiar with any of those films, and the working title on that job was Night Light, so I had no idea it was part of the Slumber Party Massacre series.

Do you have any other projects we should be on the lookout for?

Yes, I have been very fortunate in the last few years. Besides Terror Tales that came out on VOD last month and DVD this month, I have several more films coming out, including Sky Sharks, which is a mix between Walking Dead and Sharknado. Lots of other horror stars in that one, including Tony Todd, Naomi Grossman, Dave Sheridan, Lynn Lowry and Robert LaSardo. I believe this is coming out in May sometime. I also have a film by Harley Wallen called Agramon’s Gate with Laurene Landon. That one has a theatrical release in September, and I’m really looking forward to both those. I did another Harley Wallen film called Abeyance with Scout Taylor-Compton and Billy Wirth that should be out around November. Another film I did with Diane Franklin called Waking Nightmare should be out sometime this year. I also did Killer Rose, a film by Ricky Bird Jr., which has a great cast including Felissa Rose and Caroline Williams. I got to shoot the film Portal together with Naomi Grossman last year. I am so humbled and grateful for all these opportunities.

Lastly, why would you say someone should check out Terror Tales when it comes out?

Anyone that likes ‘70 and ‘80s horror films in general, and Creepshow in particular, should definitely check this one out. I believe Jimmy Lee Combs did a fantastic job with this film, and it’s a really fun ride. Fasten your seat belts!
