Polish New Talents : film production companies in a Spotlight! (part 1)

MADANTS

Madants is a Polish production outfit founded in 2015 by 2 producers, Beata Rzezniczek and Klaudia Smieja, both graduated from Kieslowski Film School in Katowice and worked before as a production manager. In 2019, Bogna Szewczyk joined the company. Madants started its career as a co-producer of films directed by renowned filmmakers such as Agnieszka Holland (Charlatan) or Claire Denis (High Life, starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche). The company also aims to develop projects of emerging talents like Aleksandra Terpińska's dark hip-hop musical Other People which had its world premiere at Tallinn Black Nights Festival 2021. In recent years, Madants’ titles have been selected by the Cannes Film Festival and gained the interest of international press and audiences. In Madants latest slate we can find an Icelandic co-production LAMB by Valdimar Jóhannsson starring Noomi Rapace (Un Certain Regard Cannes 2021) and Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s first English-language film Silent Twins with Letitia Wright (Black Panther) in a leading role.

LAVA FILMS

Lava Films is a production company based in Lodz, headed by Mariusz Wlodarski and Agnieszka Wasiak. The company specializes in international co-productions and focuses on making projects with worldwide audience potential. In their slate, we can find Poland’s 2021 best international feature Oscar contender Never Gonna Snow Again by Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert, Cannes title Magnus von Horn’s Sweat or Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou’s Apples (Venice 2020). Following Wlodarski's statement, Lava Films aims to create a safe space for filmmakers “where we engage in the storytelling, shape development but also team with filmmakers to find solutions to our struggles together.  Regarding the upcoming projects, Wasiak and Wlodarski are co-developing Eloe by Piotr Zlotorowicz with Germany’s Port Au Prince, Aga Woszczynska’s Baltic Sea-set thriller Black Water and feature Blood Mother set in Norway.
