THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT AGNES OF MONTEPULCIANO Feast Day: April 20
St. Agnes of Montepulciano may be best known for an incident that occurred many years after her death. About seventy years after Agnes died, St. Catherine of Siena made a pilgrimage to the shrine of this revered Dominican foundress. St. Catherine bowed to kiss Agnes’ foot, the saint raised it up toward her. Catherine may not have been totally surprised, as miraculous characteristics had surrounded Agnes’ life.
This 'little lamb' was born not far from Montepulciano in 1268. She expressed a desire to give her life to God and practiced pious exercises from an early age. Now and then, her parents gave in to her requests to visit the various convents in town. On one such occasion, Agnes and her mother were passing a house of ill repute, when a flock of crows suddenly descended upon her, pecking and scratching the little girl. Her mother remarked that the crows represented demonic forces threatened by her purity. Indeed, years later, Agnes would be asked to found a convent on that very spot.
In her teens, Agnes joined the Franciscans in Montepulciano and rose to become its prioress. Small white flakes in the form of crosses fell gently from the heavens in celebration. It is said that the sisters have preserved some of these until today. In 1306, God inspired Agnes to found a Dominican convent with three stones given her by the Blessed Mother in honor of the Trinity. The Blessed Mother had visited Agnes many times. On one of these occasions she allowed Agnes to hold the Christ Child, but Agnes showed great reluctance in giving him back.
Toward the end of her life, Agnes sought healing from some famous springs. Although she did not receive healing herself, her prayers effected the resurrection of a child who had drowned in the springs.
When it was clear that she will die, her community became distressed, and she told them: "If you loved me, you would be glad. Because I am about to enter the glory of my spouse. Do not grieve over my departure, I shall not lose sight of you. You will find that I have not abandoned you!"
In 1317, Agnes died in Montepulciano and received her long-awaited reward.

Saint Agnes of Montepulciano
1268 - 1317
Feast day: April 20
Agnes became known as a visionary and performed miracles.
Saint Agnes of Montepulciano was born into a noble Italian family. At a young age, her spiritual life consisted of prayer and penance. At 9 she entered the local Franciscan monastery and was elected Abbess at 15. After she had a vision from St. Dominic, she led her order to embrace the rule of St. Augustine as members of the Dominicans. Agnes was gifted with many visions, once even holding the child Jesus, and receiving Holy Communion from an angel. She interceded for people suffering from mental and physical illness. She died after a long illness and was found to be incorrupt with a perfumed liquid that flowed from her hands and feet.

SAINT OF THE DAY (April 20)
Tumblr media
St. Agnes of Montepulciano was born on 28 January 1268 into the noble Segni family in Gracciano, a frazione of Montepulciano, then part of the Papal States.
At the age of six, Agnes began trying to convince her parents to allow her to join a convent.
She was finally admitted to the Dominican convent at Montepulciano at age nine, despite it generally being against Church law to allow a child so young to join.
Agnes' reputation for holiness attracted other sisters, and she became an abbess at the age of 15.
She insisted on greater austerities in the abbey. She lived on bread and water for 15 years, slept on the ground, and used a stone for a pillow.
She became well-known for her holiness. Special signs accompanied her prayer.
She received several visions — holding the infant Jesus in her arms at one point and receiving Communion from an angel in another.
The nuns in her community saw her lifted two feet off the ground when she was praying.
When the convent ran out of food, she could feed the whole community with a handful of bread after she had blessed it.
Most interesting of all, though, was the appearance of manna about her body when she prayed.
She would sometimes be consumed in rapturous prayer, then a white, frosty-looking manna would appear on her cloak and in the place where she was kneeling.
In these instances, her sisters reported that she looked like she had been outside in a heavy snowstorm.
When it was clear that she would die, her community became distressed and she told them:
“If you loved me, you would be glad because I am about to enter the glory of my Spouse. Do not grieve over my departure—I shall not lose sight of you. You will find that I have not abandoned you.”
She died on 20 April 1317 at the age of 49. The Dominican friars attempted to obtain balsam (or myrrh) to embalm her body.
However, it was found to be producing a sweet odor on its own, and her limbs remained supple.
Miracles have been reported at her tomb. When her body was moved to a church years after her death, it was found incorrupt.
She was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726.
She is depicted as a Dominican nun with a cross or crucifix, lilies, and a lamb.

More about this painting, because I love it! I adore in old paintings where a patron is holding a miniature version of the thing they created or paid for, usually a miniature church. I don't think I've ever seen one where they're holding a whole city. Since Saint Agnes is being depicted as the patron saint of Montepulciano and this painting was commissioned by the podesta of that city, that must be the city in her hands. https://www.finestresullarte.info/en/exhibition-reviews/from-beccafumi-to-rustichino-the-surprising-exhibition-on-the-good-century-of-sienese-painting

When she awoke from her trance, she she was holding the small gold crucifix the infant Jesus was wearing.

Miracles have been reported at her tomb. When her body was moved to a church years after her death, it was found incorrupt.
She was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726.
She was renowned for her diligence in prayer and extraordinary charity.
Although born to a wealthy family in Gracchiano, Italy, she believed that charity is the only way to acquire the virtue of humility: there is no humility without charity; the one nourishes the other.

For the One Thing to Know, and if you’ll entertain a religious-related/Catholic question, who did you choose as your confirmation saint? I always like finding that out.
Yeah absolutely! So I went to a Dominican school from fourth grade on, and when it came to picking a confirmation Saint I was one of those kids who DON'T want to follow the crowd (I know right). Also I really wanted a Dominican Saint, so I did a huge amount of research and ended up choosing St. Agnes of Montepulciano, a Dominican mystic of the late 13th/early 14th century. She was a Prioress at 20, she was a miracle worker and a soul who suffered from illness all her life. When St. Catherine of Siena, (who lived in the same area of Italy) was shown her place in heaven in a vision, she was seated beside St. Agnes, and I like to think of the two of them having fabulous conversations now!

(Here she is getting communion from an angel because saints be like that)

Bl. Francis Page, 1602 A.D. Jesuit martyr of England. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Francis was a member of an English Protestant family of Harrow-on-the-Hill, in England. Reconciled to the Catholic faith, he was ordained in 1600 and sent from Douai, France, to England. He was arrested there two years later. While in prison, Francis entered the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits. He was martyred at Tyburn, England, and was beatified in 1929.

Sent home to work for the reconversion of England, he was arrested almost immediately and executed at Tyburn. Robert was hanged, drawn, and quartered on April 20, with Blessed Francis Page. He was beatified in 1929.
ST. ANICETUS, POPE Originally from Syria, Anicetus became Pope around 155. As Pope he invited St Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna, to Rome to discuss the controversy over the date of Easter.
