red-eyed tree frog
The red-eyed tree frog, or Agalychnis callidryas, is indigenous to Central America and are primarily arboreal, spending most of their lives in trees. Their strong back legs and firm grip allows them to jump through the canopy.

The red-eyed tree frog is notable for its distinct and vibrant colors. With a coat of bright blue and yellow markings, orange feet, and red eyes, this frog may seem poisonous but actually is not. So how do these frogs protect themselves from predators?

The red-eyed tree frog hides its vivid colors to avoid predators during the day by folding their bright orange feet underneath themselves and tucking their arms and legs to their sides to hide their vibrant blue and yellow markings.

As its name states, the red-eyed tree frog needs to also find a way to hide their bright red eyes to attract less attention to itself. Frogs have something called a nictitating membrane, a third eyelid that covers the eye and protects it from dirt and dust. Interestingly, the red-eyed tree frog uses an almost golden-colored web to help hide its red eyes while it’s camouflaged while allowing it to watch the area for predators.
The nictitating membrane serves another purpose; when discovered by a predator, the frog will open its eyes and jump away, startling the unsuspecting predator with the sudden appearance of bright red eyes and flashy colors. This is called deimetic behavior, also known as threat display, and is used to scare off or momentarily distract the predator, giving the animal a chance to get away. and hide itself again.
