09.06 | Happy Birthday to the incredible Anoushka Shankar.

I was watching what I like to call the "fam jam" scene of E8 (apparently a bunch of it was cut out. rude) and paused here. Thought it was a sarod, got very excited. Decided to double check and not be overconfident. My excitement doubled.

This was well over a month ago when the piece had its genesis, seeds were planted, call it what you wish.

Cut to earlier this month. The Desi LGBT Fest is announced, I realise day 9's prompt fits far too well. Though I must stress, 'Rise' was not written for the fest in the least.

As I’m drawing Jackson, I have a problem of drawing short hair, style, eyes, short hair, because most of the time I draw Afroz, curly hair and straight hair fucks me up. It’s so difficult to draw straight hair because it looks so flat and boring.

So I’m drawing Jackson with long braided hair, just because I can just because I hate how he looks like with long, short hair and I feel like the long hair suits the drawing anyways. Thank you for listening to my fucking TEDTalk.

একজনের সাথে প্রেমে ছিলাম।

গভীর প্রেম, উথালপাতাল প্রেম। মনে হত তাকে ছাড়া চলবেই না।

তারপর একদিন সে হাত ছেড়ে গেলো। আমার কাকুতি মিনতি কিছুতেই তার বাধ সাধলো না। সে চলেই গেলো৷

আমি দিনের পর দিন, মাসের পর মাস ভাবলাম, কী কমতি ছিলো আমার ? কী ছিলো না যা তাকে আমি দিতে পারতাম না ?

তারপর একদিন, ভোরবেলা উঠে বুঝলাম, আমার প্রেমটাই সব না। সে যদি আমায় চাইতো, আমাকেই চাইতো, যে চায় না, তাকে হাজার কাকুতি মিনতি করে আটকে রাখতে পারব না৷

ঠিক সেদ���নই বুঝলাম, ��ুল মানুষে ভালোবাসার পাত্র উজাড় করে অন্তঃসারশূন্য হয়ে গেছি। আমার আর কাউকে প্রেম দিতে ইচ্ছে করে না।

আজ এতদিন পর,তাকে ছাড়াও আমি ঠিক বেঁচে আছি, সুন্দরভাবে বেঁচে আছি।

যুক্তি তো সকল জানিই, তাও কখনো খুব ভোরে, গাঢ় সন্ধ্যায়, অঝোর বারিধারায়, মনে হয় একবার দুয়ারে গিয়ে কড়া নেড়ে বলি, কেন ভালোবাসলে না আমায় ? কেন যে প্রেমটুকু পেতাম, তা দিলে না ? কেন কেবল অশ্রুজল দিয়ে গেলে ? সবটা দিলে, জীবনটা অন্যরকম হতে পারত.....

Firstly, and most importantly, to darling Tim:

Alright, so, what I mean by this is I have written this piece from a place of incandescent fury, grief and an unfathomable level of disbelief. Did I mention rage? Well, yes.

As it so happens, all the Manzoors' LIF pieces are connected. Similarly, Suhani and Veer's will be connected, as they're blood family.

There are many vigorous nods, as it were to the brilliant @zeesqueere 's equally (obviously) incredible series installment for Yusuf. It has also been linked in my piece. My endless gratitude remains.

So, I'll try to keep this brief. I wrote Faruq's on the date my friend and I got tickets to see Hozier back in March of 2023. I wrote Saba's piece with the core integration of Anoushka Shankar's "Land of Gold". Faruq's "Foreigner's God" and this album are intrinsically linked.

I'd in fact chosen "ATE" as Afroz's song in April of last year - there are memos for this series everywhere you can think of - but as things go, the execution has changed. Her companion installment will be the second chapter of this piece - I have no wish to further isolate these characters.

Incidentally and beautifully so, I had the privilege of seeing Anoushka Shankar in concert last month and her set had a Land Of Gold sweep (naturally) so my mind went to Saba's piece. And then, as you'll see in this playlist:

"Ishq" and "Secret Heart" were played in succession with an incredible transition/ bridge. Yet, it all slammed into place today morning, devastatingly so. I apologise for any incoherence in this piece but I cannot remedy it.
