Eazy Peazy- The Chills’ Martin Phillipps speaks! (interview by Jeremy Grites)

So, thanks to our esteemed editor Tim Hinely, I have been a fan of the Chills since I was just a lad way back in 1988 in southern NJ. Flash forward 31 years to February 2019, and I have the good fortune of finding myself sitting on a couch in the backstage of the Trocadero Theatre in Philly with none other than Martin Phillipps. It's been 30 years since the Chills have played Philadelphia and will be my first time seeing them in person - I was underage on the last tour. After meeting the other members of the band and the road crew (all of whom were absolute sweethearts), Martin and I sit down for a few minutes before their dinner.  In 25 years of doing interviews and articles for Tim/Dagger I don't think I've ever met anyone more gracious, well spoken and thoughtful as Martin and his mates. It was at once a thrill, a pleasure and a lesson in how a professional musician and lifelong artist conducts oneself. I was nervous as hell.  Enjoy...

The current lineup

JEREMY GRITES: So, with the new Lp, label and the recent increase in touring - it seems like a new era for the band. Does it feel different and if so, in what way?

MARTIN PHILLIPPS: Well actually James and Todd have been with me 20 years and Erica for 15 years, Olie 18 years - so the band has been together and functional for years, we just couldn't financially afford to tour overseas. It wasn't until we played at the 50th birthday party of a millionaire art dealer who couldn't believe that no one was working with us and he got the ball rolling.  The "Somewhere Beautiful Live" LP which was actually recorded AT that party and we didn't plan on releasing it but we did. Then that lead to the "Molten Gold" single and "Pink Frost 13" - we were sort of testing the waters as a band and then everything got handed to Fire records and ever since then we've sort of been on a roll. I've been writing material constantly - even through my health problems when I was feeling a bit sick and exhausted all of the time. One thing that has changed is not sort of doing things on a 4 track recorder anymore. Generally we are doing like decent studio recording to sort of 'realize the vision' so to speak. And I think we've proved that with the last two albums.  JG: Oh absolutely. The fidelity, the layers - those records are awesome. It's probably sacrilegious for a Chills fan to say, but I think they are turning into my favorites of your catalogue.  MP: Oh that's good! Yes, especially with the new record - I think it's brought us up to a competitive level now if you know what I mean. It really shows what we're capable of and is a sort of jumping off point for us to really start exploring what the Chills can be. I think these last two albums were sort of a bridge to our past and getting the band up to highly functional level, like a machine and particularly with "snowbound" we work really well together.  JG: Yeah, it really shows. I mean right out of the gate with "bad sugar" - it's just a perfect pop song, perfectly executed.  MP: Nearly didn't make the record!

JG: What!? How?? MP: Well it was one that I didn't even want to bring to the band because I thought it was TOO poppy, you know? But then we started playing it and it really turned into something - same with "complex" - the band only heard a rough home demo of that song about a week before we did it in the studio. So that was very much assembled in the studio together, and turned out to be one of the very interesting tracks on the album.  JG: Right. And now the record is out and this US tour has just begun - do you like the touring and traveling?  I know how difficult it can be.  MP: I've really been enjoying this, especially now because we're getting into a pattern, we've been well received, we're playing well and we've always gotten the warmest responses from American audiences so that's a great feeling. I was bit nervous when we started doing gigs in Europe because I hadn't sung even 3 nights consecutively in many years so I wasn't sure how my voice would stand up. So we stagger our gigs a bit now and I'm careful about that. You know "heavenly pop hit" is top of my range and can really destroy my voice for a few days if I'm not careful. More importantly though, I was going back to Europe not knowing how I was confront all of my old wonderful memories from my 20's and the first wave of interest in the Chills.  But Erica our multi-instrumentalist said something very wise to me - she said " don't worry about old memories, create new memories." And she was right. Plus, everything turned out to be so different anyway - I mean the last time we played Berlin there was a wall in it! (Laughter and talking about how cool East Berlin is now...). Yeah but even London is different - the Channel tunnel wasn't there when we were there last, so everything is very different.  JG: and is there more touring after this stint in the US or back home for a bit? MP: No we go straight home after this for a bit. As you'll see Erica is about to have a baby so... JG: Wow she's a trooper! MP: Yes she is indeed.  Part of the reason for doing this tour is to end at SXSW and talk to some international booking agents about taking the Chills to regular festivals and going out for longer runs that are more financially do-able. That is definitely the way forward. We're back in business so to speak you know and there's a new documentary film being made about us that's going to premiere at SXSW while we are there which is lucky.

JG: So even thought the new record just came out, you're already thinking ahead... MP: Oh yeah - I think I already have about 23 songs or concepts for songs, plus a few older things that were never done that I think are worth doing. JG: Wow, that's a lot! MP: And that's just starting to tap into what I really want to do. The main difference with the next one is I'm going to heavily demo everything before into getting studio.  The last 2 records I was not feeling well and it was very hard to concentrate and even now, we're still adjusting the songs as we go. It started to be that way after I got my first porta studio, like post "Brave Words," where I did all my demos for "Submarine Bells," and "Soft Bomb."  JG: Ah yes, I loved each of my porta studios! MP: Yeah, you sort of had to become a master of bouncing tracks (laughter) and I got really good at it.  JG: Oh for sure. We used to do that too - you really had to plan it out in order to make the most of what little space you had.  MP: Yes definitely

And we're really interested to see what the impact of this movie will be. You know it's a feature length film that is both about the entire history of the band, but also about my health struggles and ups & downs and also my complete eccentricities (laughter) and as a collectors of weird things and maker of strange artworks.  JG: That was another thing I wanted to ask you about actually - your artwork and what's been happening with that lately? MP: I really stopped for a long time, mostly because there was no outlet for it. In the beginning I did nearly all of the art for the record covers etc - that was always part of the whole process. But then later when we're on Warner Brothers there was less to do because things needed to be done quickly, unlike Flying Nun where this could be held up for months.  JG: Yeah I can't imagine the major label scenario.  MP: It's amazing to watch how that machine works. It's fantastic. That’s another interesting thing about the documentary actually is that in going through all of this old stuff we found a lot of the original artwork (through Otago museum having a collection of Martin's works and history of the Chills). Yeah we found the "Rolling Moon" cover as well as the original, unused cover. They found the actual construction that was in pieces and spent 4 months repairing it and its pristine again.  JG: wow, amazing! MP: Yeah and all of this stuff is going to be in the movie I think, although I haven't seen the final edit yet.

JG: Yes I'll be interested to see the old footage and all of the stuff about the old days especially - that was one hell of a graduating class for Flying Nun back then.  MP: yeah back then mostly everyone in all of those bands came from 1 of 3 high schools, everybody knew each other and everybody had seen Chris Knox. You know you used to go see cover bands and stuff, but then we all saw the Sex Pistols on tv and saw Chris Knox who is still one of the most formidable performers I've ever seen - especially when he had the Punks of Anger - it was terrifying and then the Enemy, who were more powerful than Toy Love - who were the people's favorites. They were sort of THE band of the time and the whole Flying Nun community has either played with Toy Love or been to see them and it all came together very quickly. Plus there had already been a few other indie labels but Flying Nun was very lucky to pick bands like the Clean and suddenly - zoom.  JG: Yeah we were fortunate here that we had the Philly Record Exchange which was one of the only places you could find those records because of people Tom Lax and Jacy Webster. We would ride the bus up from Atlantic City to go there just to buy NZ records - like this one: my "Wet Blanket 45" still with the record change sticker on it. (Presents 45 and nerdish-ly asks for autograph) MP: Wow, great! You don't see that one very often.  JG: Another thing I was wondering about was what you've been listening to lately and are there any new NZ bands that you are sort of bringing along or appreciating these days? MP: I'm not as in touch as I really should be. But a band I haven't seen yet but have heard are called Soaked Oats - they're part of a whole scene of bands that are coming up, which seems to happen every 7 or 8 years so. I think they just started out for fun but they've become quite big now and I think you'll start to hear about them - full on sort of power pop, very strong band. So that's one to watch out for. I'm also a big fan of Aldous Harding. I did some solo support gigs with her and she's obviously really going places. She's an extremely courageous artist. It's different in the van now because it's sort of 'headphone world' and everyone has their own soundtrack.  JG: Yeah not like the old days when everyone would get their turn to pick a cassette to listen to and the whole van was stuck with it!  MP: (laughing) Yes, exactly! but out our manager Fiona has some really good choices so it's been fun. It goes from 70's / 80's post punk to girl groups, and then classic like Bowie. I couldn't believe - we've been eating in that supermarket... JG: whole foods?  MP: yeah that's it. The other day we were in one and they were playing the Seeds! (Laughter). And then all this 60's garage stuff.  JG: Man they must have a cool manager, haha MP: yeah must be.  JG: SO what was the first stuff that you really got into? Like, what was your first record you can remember buying or a band that made you want a guitar etc?? MP: the first stuff that made me realize that I was outsider and a little different was probably the Sweet. Everyone always talks about Slade, but I never heard Slade for years! Gary Glitter too, although we're not supposed to talk about Gary Glitter anymore (laughs). But that sort of stuff very quickly lead me to discovering David Bowie so I think probably the first proper album I bought was "Pinups."  I asked my misinformed older sister which was the best Bowie album to get. She should of told me "Ziggy Stardust," but she told me about the one that was currently the latest. Haha. For years I didn't even know they were covers because I didn't think to look at the label to see who wrote them.  JG: Yeah you're like 'wow this Bowie guy writes a lot of hits!' (Laughing) MP: Yeah, and they're all so different from each other!  JG: Indeed!  Well I believe I have used my allotted time with you sir. Thank you so much and break a leg tonight.  MP: Cheers. DEVELOPMENT/PRODUCTION Not that I’m superstitious, but every seven years, I seem to change careers. My first was as an avant garde composer, my second a science-fiction, fantasy and finally horror novelist. The third seven-year stretch was coming up, so I showed up in Hollywood a year and a half ago with a vague notion of doing something in film. I took meetings, jacuzzed with grim determination, and flashed my fake Rolex watch at all the right people, but no new career emerged. One day, I read in Twilight Zone magazine that I was one of the ancestors of the literary splatterpunk movement. A number of other ancestors were mentioned, but they were all either twice my age or dead. I began to feel like a has been. Then, one day in June 1988, it all changed. Nine months later, much to my own astonishment, I looked on as my first film, The Laughing Dead, screened for a crowd of avid genre fans.

Lex Nakashima was the next person to show up. He was a young producer who had developed a number of large scale fantasy projects, and an old friend. “We have to gain credibility in this town,” I said. “We have to make a movie – no matter how small-scale–so that we can gain the clout to raise money for the huge projects we’ve both been dreaming about. A horror movie would be nice.”

“Can we set it in Oaxaca?” Lex asked.

I thought about it. Oaxaca, Mexico, is the home of the festival of the laughing dead, a strange blend of Catholicism and pre-Columbian religions- people dressed as skeletons dancing through the streets, celebrants feasting over the graves of their ancestors. “Sure,” I decided. “I can write that.” My mind was racing wildly, trying to figure out a plot.

“Fine,” said Lex, “I’ll get a second mortgage on my house. You’ll be the executive producer, and I’ll produce.” At his best, Lex is one of the most decisive people I know.

Lex went to a New Age bookstore in Santa Monica and came back with a couple hundred dollars’ worth of books about the culture of the ancient Mayans, and in a few weeks’ time, I had the beginnings of a viable story. I wanted to have a lot of spectacle, I wanted a lot of black humor, and I wanted colorful, imaginative gore that would really appeal to the crowd. Could we really do it on $250,000? Probably not, I told myself, although I did not then envision that the budget would eventually reach seven figures.

Who could direct the film? I thought of another friend, Wendy Ikeguchi, who had been an assistant director on projects as varied as Wisdom and The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd. Would she care to direct? I inquired, knowing full well that although I had conceived the story and already mentally cast it, I didn’t at that time know much about the technical aspects of directing. I only knew what I wanted to see on the screen.

“Direct it yourself,” Wendy told me.

I didn’t quite trust myself yet. I tried to talk Wendy into it for some weeks, but to no avail. She’s a member of the Director’s Guild and, in the final analysis, we couldn’t afford their rates. Instead, she signed on as executive producer and directorial advisor, in which capacity she could tell me what to do in no uncertain terms. “You’re supposed to say ‘action’ now, Somtow, she reprimanded me when my mind started wandering one day. We disagreed about many things in fact, it might be fair to say that we fought like cats and dogs but her input proved indispensible to the project.

We needed someone to design the production, someone who really understood the tone of the movie, who knew a lot about pre-Columbian cultures, and who wouldn’t be fazed at the number and variety of sets needed in The Laughing Dead: the Mayan temple interior, the labyrinthine caves, seedy hotel lobbies and scenes of macabre revelry. Ryan Ellner, a former roommate of mine who worked for Freddy’s Nightmares as, among other things, a maker of Freddy gloves, introduced me to Philip Vasels and Diane Hughes. They’re responsible for both sets in Los Angeles and on location in the western-set ‘town’ of Old Tuscon, Arizona, were designed and constructed by the team. They built the seemingly endless underground caverns and, for the film’s finale, the Mayan ball court of death.

Philip later confided, “I thought, Oh no, one of those movies.’ But after I read the script, I realized there was a lot more to it.” I knew we had hired the right people when one day Philip called to tell me, “I don’t dare go into that inner room. I’m too scared.”

He meant the inner chamber of Dr. Um-Tzec’s office, the scene of a demonic possession and a kinky, bloody heart exchange sequence, the dark midpoint of the film. What transpires in the room is the hinge, the corrupt center of the entire story. It’s a metaphor for the equation of sex with death. When I learned how disturbed Philip was by the meaning of the room, I knew we were on the same wavelength. Despite the flashiness of some of the other sets, the Dr. Um-Tzec “suite– the death god’s office and the inner room-is Vasels and Hughes’ most inspired creation.

The next person I called was the man with whom I used to share a house when I lived on the East Coast: writer, raconteur and madman Tim Sullivan Beside being a very fine writer of everything from elegant horror to “V” novels, Tim Sullivan had just done a bit of acting, a PBS thing in his native Philadelphia. I was thinking of Tim for the role of a Catholic priest who, tormented by guilt over having seduced a nun 12 years before, turns into a crazed killer when possessed by Um-Tzec, the Mayan death god. Tim had wanted to be a monster since childhood. Although he was a little surprised at being asked to drop everything he was doing, fly out from Philadelphia and act, he was used to my eccentricities. He was the first person (aside from Lex) to actually believe there might be something to my claim that we were about to make a movie. Two months later, he was on my doorstep, suitcase in hand, making the sign of the cross at my neighbors.

Many of my friends are writers, so we soon had several well known ones roped in for cameos, everyone from science fiction author Ed Bryant (whose head gets crushed by a bus in the film) to longtime collector and fan Forry Ackerman, who does a charming little turn as a corpse. As other scribes ranging from Tim (The Anubis Gates) Powers to film critic Bill Warren began volunteering to die horribly, I realized that we had a pretty good gimmick going.

Two weeks before we were scheduled to start shooting on location in Arizona, we acquired our director of photography, David Boyd. Again, I felt fortunate to have found someone so sympathetic with my vision. The quirky neo-Expressionist angles, the Mario Bavaesque lighting, the painterly composition of his shots often provide an ironic undertone to the black comedy.

David Boyd explains what it was like to have writers instead of actors on set. ‘Actors,’ he says, ‘tend to be consumed by self-involvement. These guys were different. They understood my job much better than actors – you could talk about metaphorical lighting and camerawork and they would understand.’ Then crazy, star struck writers will do almost anything for almost nothing.

Thanksgiving came and went. We were on our way to Old Tucson for the most grueling 19 days of my life, some days with as many as 52 setups. The Arizona portion of the shoot had a party atmosphere despite the peculiar working conditions. Two other films were being shot on the same location, including Speed Zone, so Robert Shelton, who runs Old Tucson, was juggling as fast as he could. One day we shared the set with more than 1,000 high school students who were having a banquet, and I prayed that the sound of distant cheerleading choruses could somehow be disguised, in the audio mix, as the sound of crickets or birds through the use of clever signal processing.

On the opening day, I was in my UmTzec regalia atop a towering mountain and about to plunge a knife into my hapless niece Vanina, who was playing Victim #1. I couldn’t see a thing without my glasses, and I was trying to walk downhill toward Wendy Ikeguchi, whose blurry form was waving frantically in the distance, I took a Chaplinesque tumble, sprained my ankle, and thought that all was lost until my mother (who taught me everything I know about horror, and who was working with us as a production supervisor) explained to me that I shouldn’t have attempted to portray a god without making the appropriate blood sacrifice; now that my foot was bleeding onto the earth, everything would be OK. I limped away, wondering if I’d be completely useless for the rest of the shoot.

Soon everyone was ready to kill me, because my script was about warm tropical nights and the real temperature in Tucson in the middle of the night was below freezing. Timson Hill and John Anthoni, who played Dr. Um-Tzec’s evil acolytes, suffered in particular, as they stood in their skimpy costumes in the biting desert wind. One of the key FX-the crushing of Ed Bryant’s head under the wheels of a bus-didn’t come off the first time; the blood balloons failed to burst. I heard Wendy Ikeguchi cry out, “Where’s the blood, where’s the blood?” and we all rushed over to find that the head had been squashed flat. Was it ruined? We watched in astonishment as the head popped right back into shape the minute the bus pulled away. No one had ever dreamed that the head would be reusable.

We didn’t sleep much. We ate gargantuan portions of steak at the Pack ‘Em In Steak House across the street from our motel, and a week later we were ready to return to Los Angeles, where the Vasels and Hughes team had been wildly constructing sets in our absence. More spectacle was to come: Ryan Effner’s and my turning into monsters, the nasty Caesarean section dream sequence, the hotel lobby sequence in which Father O’Sullivan goes crazy and spatters the wall with women’s brains, and the climax, a recreation of the Mayan ballgame of death replete with zombies, dinosaur battle, a collapsing temple a la Last Days of Pompeii and an exploding hotel.

Interview with S. P. Somtow

Instead of wing for going for name actors, you’ve brought together a swill of self and horror writers S. P. Somtow: We didn’t have any money when I wrote the screenplay, so I found it easier to write the roles around people that knew, that would work for next to nothing. They really are playing themselves.

You describe the film as being a cross between NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and KRAMER VERSUS KRAMER, with a little NIGHT OF THE IGUANA thrown in at the end. That sounds sick. S. P. Somtow: Now I guess I’d just call it a neo-expressionistic, black comedy. It has an exaggerated quality to it. I find it very hard to write about anything without looking at its absurd qualities. Horror is so close to comedy in its structure. They both depend on misleading the expectations of the audience. If a guy slips on a banana peel, it’s comedy. If he breaks his neck when he hits the ground, it’s horror.

But if they’re so close, then why does big-budget-Hollywood prefer comedy over horror? S. P. Somtow: Horror comes from a nasty part of the mind. People with a lot of money like to shield themselves, with their money.

Your books don’t have the humorous, satirical edge that LAUGHING DEAD does. S. P. Somtow: No, and in fact the novel version of LAUGHING DEAD. which I’m working on now. is not satirical. But it’s the ambiguity that I enjoy. And that is something that I see about my own work.

Where is your accent from? S. P. Somtow: I was born in Thailand, and left there when I was 6 months old. We went to Europe. I went back to Thailand when I was 7. and then I went to Eton Preparatory school in London. It’s a horrible little place. This was in the mid sixties. We were a bunch of 14 year olds discussing the sexual imagery in Bergman’s films. Then I went on to Cambridge, and received a degree in Music and English Literature. I went back to Thailand, and became a hideous figure in Thailand music.

How did you end up writing horror novels S. P. Somtow: Every time a horror writer talks about his roots, it always goes back to his mother. In my case, it was because my mother would take me to every horror film, and watch them over and over. She would watch them with her hand over her eyes for the entire movies. She made me go, because she didn’t want to go alone. To this day, she rents every sleazy B movie she can get her hands on. She worked on LAUGHING DEAD as a production supervisor

SPECIAL EFFECTS By carefully conserving his budget, Somtow had enough money to acquire the services of John Buechler’s Mechanical Make-up Imageries (MMI) studio and staff to create glorious special effects. Buechler, claimed that for him The Laughing Dead was ‘a labour of love’. The feeling can certainly be seen in the wondrous effects he and his people devised. For example: Tess has a nightmare in which she gives birth to a murderous version of her own son. A bus driver is squashed by his own vehicle. And people transform into grotesque, serpentine gods of the ancient Maya.

Also producing special effects for the film was relative newcomer Rik Carter and his LA team. They created the zombie make-up and some of the simpler but no less stunning effects. In one sequence, Father O’Sullivan stands paralyzed as UnTzec’s evil assistant bares and then tears open her breasts, removes her heart and buries it in the priest’s chest, thereby giving Um-Tzec possession of O’Sullivan’s soul. And Frost loses one arm to the possessed priest, then has it stuffed viciously down his throat, his swallowed fingers wriggling out of his neck courtesy of Carter’s effects work. A gripping death, so to speak.

After John Buechler came on board, the movie really began to gel. Buechler’s name was well known enough in the horror/fantasy field to lend us the clout to draw in many other figures. I was deeply moved when John offered to do the creature transformations and the makeup FX for The Laughing Dead. I hadn’t dared ask him, because–even though our budget had, by then, tripled-I considered him, with all his credits, too exalted a figure to want to take part in our little venture. “Trn intrigued by the script,” he said. “It’s disturbing, and it’s funny. He then proceeded to make us an offer we couldn’t refuse. Buechler also talked me into playing the somewhat-more-than-a cameo role of the evil Dr. Um-Tzec. “Why, Somtow,” he kept saying, “it’s you. Can’t you see that? Rik Carter signed on to do the rest of the makeup FX, in particular an arm-down-the throat gag that became one of the show’s highlights.

“Another reason I’m doing this for you,” John Buechler told me, “is that I’ve never seen anyone attempt so much with so little money!”

okay so here’s the long ass story about how i got my ass from nyc to philly featuring @imlouisaf, @foliealou, and @1000-directions.

alternatively: how philly did us dirty

it starts wednesday when i jokingly talk to justine (imlouisaf) and rachel (foliealou) about making a road trip down to philadelphia and try and get last minute tickets to see harry. it spirals into “yes, we can totally do it!” and “here are the bus schedules!” and “okay, i have a price alert set up for stubhub.”

but you know murphy’s law? anything that can happen - will happen? yeah, fucking real as shit.

it starts off with me getting an uber from my house to the train station to catch a bus in midtown manhattan at 6pm to get to philly at 8:05pm.

3 ubers are cancelled on me, and i don’t end up getting an uber until 4:05pm, which - fine. my train is at 4:30, it takes like 25 minutes to get there, and nj transit is usually shit when it comes to being on time. so it’s fine, right? at this point, i’m expecting to make it to midtown east to drop off my stuff (a full-fledged backpack with 1d monopoly, clothes, and shit all in it) at justine’s apartment and maybe shower if i have time and i’m lucky.

my uber driver makes a wrong turn, adding 5 minutes to our ETA, there’s traffic. and so, i end up missing the 4:30 train, but it’s fine, because trains come like every 5 to 15 minutes, so i’ll just catch the 4:46pm train, right? wrong. because the 4:46pm train ends up being 10 minutes late. so fuck trying to get to midtown east at this point. i can’t even shower because i have no time (and the plumbing’s busted at my house). 

in the meantime, i finally buy a GA ticket from stubhub for a little over face value, but tickets were selling fast off stubhub and i didn’t wanna take my chances. so now i’m like committed 

so, justine and rachel check and apparently, i can leave my bag with greyhound. so okay, that’s fine and cool and dandy. but then i get to port authority to meet up with them for the bus, and customer service says i can’t leave my bag with them. GREAT, FABULOUS. then they direct me to brochure for a luggage service a few blocks away that can hold my backpack. (since it’s big enough that the venue will 100% not let me bring it in.) 

i go up this rickety ass elevator to the second floor of this small ass building, and guess what? NO LUGGAGE SERVICE. LIKE NOTHING. JUST ALL DANCE STUDIOS OR SOMETHING. my patience is dwindling, i’m legit 5 seconds away from a breakdown in the middle of manhattan. and i’m just like, “well, fuck, i’ll have to find a place in philly to store my shit.”

i get to the gate on time by some grace of god, and we get on the bus and i’m trying to charge my phone because i’m at 20% in the hours before a concert where cell service is absolute shit. i put my phone into what i thought was a clean sick bag, but i guess it had water at the bottom in it. (i would’ve actually cried if there was vomit in the bag, and i put my phone in vomit. i would’ve straight up cried.)

so, as a result, i’m calling greyhound and they have me on hold for 5 minutes before i’m in the tunnel and i have to hang up because no service. my phone isn’t charging - but now, my phone screen is flickering... just half of it... flickering dim... and i’m like, “WHY!” because i cannot afford to break my phone right now. i try not to think about it and just call and search on my phone for anywhere i can leave my bag.

i call tower theatre, and they tell me the box office is closed after the show starts so they can’t store my bag, and i’ll have to talk to security to see if they’d let me leave it somewhere. but there’s no way for me to know for sure until i get there, so that’s not an option. i call greyhound, and FINALLY the lady tells me i can leave it at the counter in philadelphia. so i’m like relieved, right? 

i’m on the bus for 2.5 hours, running on pure adrenaline and maybe 3 hours of sleep from the last 36 hours. i try to sleep on the bus, but i’m too wired to do so. i end up doing my makeup on the bus while justine and rachel try to find things to eat because guess what? we haven’t eaten dinner. but our bus is late, so we don’t get to the station until 8:30pm.

i go up to the counter and ask them if i can leave my bag, and the agent’s like, “yeah, it’s $10. cash only. i’ll just call baggage to come pick it up.” i don’t have $10 in cash, but justine does, and we hand it off. then the baggage guy comes, and he’s like “we don’t hold luggage after 8pm.” and honest to god, justine, rachel, and i all had matching looks of frustration, despair, and pure, pure panic. luckily, the agent sees the clear as fucking day distress on our faces and does us a solid saying she’ll take the bag anyways and leave a note for the people coming in later as long as we give the $10. we thank her profusely before quite literally running out the door to catch the septa train underground for 12 fucking stops all the way to the end of the line from the 11th st station.

so, eventually, we get to the venue at fucking 9:01pm, completely missing muna’s set. and we’re like, “let’s get our merch now since harry’s probably being dramatic as fuck with his curtain.” so we probably missed like the first verse of ‘ever since new york’ but it was worth it since we were in the GA seated section with a kick ass view and had half a row entirely to ourselves (read: to myself) to dance and go nuts. (amazing.)

after the show, we have a 11:25pm bus we can catch back to nyc. we already bought tickets, but we also bought backup tickets to the 3:35am bus. we end up meeting with steph (1000-directions) who offers to drive us to the bus station. except no one could apparently fucking drive last night, and we’re convinced we’ve missed our bus as we get to the station at 11:30. but BY SOME MIRACLE, the bus is delayed 30 to 45 minutes. but at least, i’m able to get my backpack from the counter, thank god. (and with our $10 returned!)

we’re able to grab food from some fried chicken place - in which some lady tried to get food for free, much to the chagrin of the owner who unceremoniously kicked her out. and then the owner, who we thought was cool and nice, ended up trying to invite justine and i back to his place for drinks and for a party - to which we immediately were like, “nope.” and took our food and RAN out of there. 

aaaaaand then we get back and we find out there’s been an accident that’s preventing the buses from getting to the station. (there was another group of people waiting for a bus to pittsburgh.) so we have to wait another hour and a half for the bus. 

we’re chilling and eating, i’m reading fic (a road trip fic, ironically), and my phone is ... questionably working. the screen is no longer flickering, but there’s some damage to the mechanism behind the power button since it’s gone sticky and tries to turn off my phone every fucking five minutes. and if i press the home button? screenshots. every. single. fucking. time. 

eventually, we get on the bus at like 1:20am. and some guy plops up right next to rachel, offering her juice and shit and being hella shady. our bus driver is a maniac on the road. i somehow sleep for 1 hour. we get to nyc at 3:20am. and then our uber driver is yelling on the phone to some guy, but he’s nice. except he stops at red lights and keeps trying to inch forward even though HE’S GOING TO INCH US THE FUCK INTO TRAFFIC. but after all is said and done, we get dropped off at justine’s apartment.

so, as a summary:

When I met Larry Krasner, I was a college dropout charged with seven misdemeanors

Here’s the story of how I know Larry Krasner. Today I work in City Hall as an attorney, helping to write and pass laws. But the first time I stepped foot in City Hall, I was a 20 year old college dropout, I had been charged with something like 7 different misdemeanors, and Larry Krasner was my lawyer. I was one of 75 people arrested while inside a private building, helping to paint signs and make costumes for protests at the 2000 Republican National Convention. I spent 10 days in jail after this ridiculous arrest, from the long hours on an overheated bus to days in overcrowded Roundhouse cells without beds, to maximum security at PICC up on State Road. Larry Krasner was one of the civil rights lawyers who dropped everything to come to meet with us in jail to advise us and get us free. He defended many of us, and helped us sue to try to prevent others from being surveilled and arrested for exercising protected rights. Throughout it all he patiently listened to dirty scrappy kids like me, supported us, and used his resources and talents to help us advance our vision of a more just world.

I took a few lessons from this episode in my life. I learned that our city imprisons many people who simply can’t afford bail. And I learned that you can’t simply rely on the ‘justice’ system to deliver justice. Throughout the 10 days I was shuttled through our local prisons, I had assumed that when we got to court, everything would quickly be sorted out and it would be clear that the police had no authority to arrest me. I was wrong. In court, our District Attorney’s office pressed charges - absurd ones. Blocking an intersection, when I was in a building when I was arrested. Obstructing justice, when I had my hands out in front of me to be handcuffed. They put on evidence that was nonsensical, irrelevant, fabricated. They told me to take a deal. Larry helped people like me avoid getting criminal records, including some who faced far more serious false charges. (This year I learned that the person who signed the warrant for our arrest was Rich Negrin - that’s not a comment on Rich’s character, but on how broken institutions will affect even good people.)

I stayed in Philly and got my own law degree. Working in City Council, I represented a part of north Philadelphia that is hard hit by drugs, the racist drug war, and decades of entrenched poverty and trauma. It became clear to me that the rot in our justice system only fuels more trauma and criminalization, and serves neither victims nor public safety.

I kept encountering Larry’s work on behalf of the integrity of the justice system. He became the person I would turn to when there was a wrong that needed righting. I called him when an arts nonprofit I worked with found out one of their youth was charged for unexpectedly being present when a serious crime occurred, and was being held in adult prison despite still being a child. I called him when low-income workers came into my Council office telling me about how police detained them and stole whatever cash they had, charging them with no crime. When I learned that the DA’s office filed civil forfeiture cases based on illegal arrests, without doing any review or investigation and sometimes with full knowledge they were relying on crooked cops and bad evidence, I called Larry. I turned to him when it became clear that the problems with the police and District Attorney were systemic, with no consequences for rape, assault, theft, and perjury by officers who were entrusted to solve crimes and to protect us. I watched when he fought for months to get the District Attorney to admit they had hidden evidence of systematic corruption of narcotics cops, and then cheered when he won in court.

Larry is not new to the issues or responsibilities of the District Attorney. By dedicating himself to not just criminal defense, but civil rights litigation focused on addressing and redressing systemic abuses and failures of our criminal justice system, he intimately knows both how it does work now, and how it should work better. He has no scales on his eyes. He is taking on a huge challenge, and we are taking a huge chance on him. But I can think of no more important chance to take.

I know Larry to be a good and principled man. When he says what he will do, these are not mere campaign promises. It’s a life’s work. Larry is part of the communities in this city that are closest to my heart - those advancing equality and justice. Immigrants, activists for Black Lives Matter and AIDS and economic justice and disability rights. I’ve been to benefits in his office and birthday parties. Show me who you stand with and I’ll show you who you are – I stand with Larry Krasner.

Adam Clayton Powell Jr.

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (November 29, 1908 – April 4, 1972) was a Baptist pastor and an American politician, who represented Harlem, New York City, in the United States House of Representatives (1945���71). He was the first person of African-American descent to be elected from New York to Congress. Oscar Stanton De Priest of Illinois was the first black person to be elected to Congress in the 20th century; Powell was the fourth. Blacks in the South were disenfranchised and excluded from politics until after passage of civil rights legislation in the mid-1960s.

Re-elected for nearly three decades, Powell became a powerful national politician of the Democratic Party, and served as a national spokesman on civil rights and social issues. He also urged United States presidents to support emerging nations in Africa and Asia as they gained independence after colonialism.

In 1961, after 16 years in the House, Powell became chairman of the Education and Labor Committee, the most powerful position held by an African American in Congress. As Chairman, he supported the passage of important social and civil rights legislation under presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Following allegations of corruption, in 1967 Powell was excluded from his seat by Democratic Representatives-elect of the 90th Congress, but he was re-elected and regained the seat in the 1969 United States Supreme Court ruling in Powell v. McCormack. He lost his seat in 1970 to Charles Rangel and retired from electoral politics.

Early years

Powell was born in 1908 in New Haven, Connecticut, the second child and only son of Adam Clayton Powell Sr. and Mattie Buster Shaffer, both born poor in Virginia and West Virginia, respectively. His sister Blanche was 10 years older. His parents were of mixed race with African and European ancestry (and, according to his father, American Indian on his mother's side). They and their ancestors were classified as mulatto in 19th-century censuses. Powell's paternal grandmother's ancestors had been free persons of color for generations before the Civil War. By 1908, Powell Sr. had become a prominent Baptist minister, serving as a pastor in Philadelphia, and being called as the lead pastor at a Baptist church in New Haven.

Powell Sr. had worked his way out of poverty and through Wayland Seminary, a historically black college, and postgraduate study at Yale University and Virginia Seminary. In the year of his son's birth in New Haven, Powell Sr. was called as the pastor of the prominent Abyssinian Baptist Church in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. He led the church for decades through major expansion, including the fundraising for and construction of an addition to accommodate the increased membership of the congregation during the years of the Great Migration. That congregation grew to a community of 10,000 persons.

Due to his father's achievements, Powell grew up in a wealthy household in New York City. Because of his partial European ancestry, Adam was born with hazel eyes, fair skin and blond hair, such that he could pass for white. However, he did not play with that racial ambiguity until college. He attended Townsend Harris High School, then studied at City College of New York before starting at Colgate University in upstate as a freshman. The four other African-American students at Colgate at the time were all athletes. For a time, Powell briefly passed as white, using his appearance to escape racial strictures at college. The other black students were dismayed to discover what he had done. Encouraged by his father to become a minister, Powell became more serious about his studies at Colgate, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1930. After returning to New York, Powell began his graduate work and in 1931 earned an M.A. in religious education from Columbia University. He became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, a fraternity started by and for blacks.

Later, apparently trying to bolster his black identity, Powell recounted that his paternal grandparents were born into slavery. But, his paternal grandmother Sally Dunning was at least the third generation of free people of color in her family. In the 1860 census, she is listed as a free mulatto, as were her mother, grandmother, and siblings. Sally never identified the father of Adam Clayton Powell, Sr., born 1865. She appeared to have named her son after her older brother Adam Dunning, listed on the 1860 census as a farmer and the head of their household. In 1867 Sally Dunning married Anthony Bush, a mulatto freedman. All the family members were listed under the surname Dunning in the 1870 census.

The family changed its surname to Powell when they moved to Kanawha County, West Virginia, as part of their new life there. According to Charles V. Hamilton, a 1991 biographer of Powell, Anthony Bush "decided to take the name Powell as a new identity", which is how they were recorded in the 1880 census.

Adam Jr.'s mother Mattie Buster Shaffer was also of mixed race. Her parents had been slaves in Virginia and were freed after the American Civil War. Powell's parents married in West Virginia, where they met. Numerous freedmen had migrated there in the late 19th century for work.

Career

After ordination, Powell began assisting his father with charitable services at the church and as a preacher. He greatly increased the volume of meals and clothing provided to the needy, and began to learn more about the lives of the working class and poor in Harlem.

During the Great Depression in the 1930s, Powell, a handsome and charismatic figure, became a prominent civil rights leader in Harlem. He recounted these experiences in a 1964 interview with Robert Penn Warren for the book Who Speaks for the Negro?. He developed a formidable public following in the community through his crusades for jobs and affordable housing. As chairman of the Coordinating Committee for Employment, Powell used numerous methods of community organizing to bring political pressure on major businesses to open their doors to black employees at professional levels. He organized mass meetings, rent strikes, and public campaigns to force companies, utilities, and Harlem Hospital, which operated in the community, to hire black workers at skill levels higher than the lowest positions, to which they had formerly been restricted by informal discrimination.

For instance, during the 1939 New York World's Fair, Powell organized a picket line at the Fair's offices in the Empire State Building; as a result, the number of black employees was increased from about 200 to 732. In 1941, he led a bus boycott in Harlem; the Transit Authority hired 200 black workers and set the precedent for more. Powell also led a fight to have drugstores operating in Harlem hire black pharmacists. He encouraged local residents to shop only where blacks were hired to work. "Mass action is the most powerful force on earth," Powell once said, adding, "As long as it is within the law, it's not wrong; if the law is wrong, change the law."

In 1938, Powell succeeded his father as pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church.

Political career

New York City Council

In 1941, with the aid of New York City's use of the Single Transferable Vote, Powell was elected to the New York City Council as the city's first black Council member.[3] He received 65,736 votes, the third-best total among the six successful Council candidates.

Congress

In 1944, Powell ran for the United States Congress on a platform of civil rights for African Americans: support for "fair employment practices, and a ban on poll taxes and lynching." Requiring poll taxes for voter registration and voting was a device used in southern states in new constitutions adopted from 1890 to 1908 to disenfranchise blacks and many poor whites, in order to exclude them from politics. Such devices, together with the social and economic intimidation of Jim Crow, were maintained in the South into the 1960s to keep blacks politically powerless.

Powell was elected as a Democrat to represent the Congressional District that included Harlem. He was the first black Congressman from New York State.

As the historian Charles V. Hamilton wrote in his 1992 political biography of Powell,

"Here was a person who [in the 1940s] would at least 'speak out.'... That would be different ... Many Negroes were angry that no Northern liberals would get up on the floor of Congress and challenge the segregationists. ... Powell certainly promised to do that. ...

"[In] the 1940s and 1950s, he was, indeed, virtually alone.... And precisely because of that, he was exceptionally crucial. In many instances during those earlier times, if he did not speak out, the issue would not have been raised. ...For example, only he could (or would dare to) challenge Congressman Rankin of Mississippi on the House floor in the 1940s for using the word 'nigger.' He certainly did not change Rankin's mind or behavior, but he gave solace to millions who longed for a little retaliatory defiance."

As one of only two black Congressmen (the other being William Levi Dawson) until 1955, Powell challenged the informal ban on black representatives using Capitol facilities reserved for white members. He took black constituents to dine with him in the "Whites Only" House restaurant. He clashed with the many segregationists from the South in his party. Since the late 19th century, Southern Democrats commanded a one-party system, as they had effectively disfranchised most blacks from voting since the turn of the century and excluded them from the political system. The white Congressmen and Senators controlled all the seats allocated for the total population in the southern states, had established seniority, and commanded many important committee chairs in the House and Senate.

Powell worked closely with Clarence M. Mitchell Jr., the NAACP representative in Washington, to try to gain justice in federal programs. Biographer Hamilton described the NAACP as "the quarterback that threw the ball to Powell, who, to his credit, was more than happy to catch and run with it." He developed a strategy known as the "Powell Amendments." "On bill after bill that proposed federal expenditures, Powell would offer 'our customary amendment,' requiring that federal funds be denied to any jurisdiction that maintained segregation; Liberals would be embarrassed, Southern politicians angered." This principle would later become integrated into Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Powell was willing to act independently; in 1956, he broke party ranks and supported President Dwight D. Eisenhower for re-election, saying the civil rights plank in the Democratic Party platform was too weak. In 1958, he survived a determined effort by the Tammany Hall Democratic Party machine in New York to oust him in the primary election. In 1960, Powell, hearing of planned civil rights marches at the Democratic Convention, which could embarrass the party or candidate, threatened to accuse Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. of having a homosexual relationship with Bayard Rustin unless the marches were cancelled. Rustin was one of King's political advisers and was an openly gay man. King agreed to cancel the planned events and Rustin resigned from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Global work

Powell also paid attention to the issues of developing nations in Africa and Asia, making trips overseas. He urged presidential policymakers to pay attention to nations seeking independence from colonial powers and support aid to them. During the Cold War, many of them sought neutrality between the United States and the Soviet Union. He made speeches on the House Floor to celebrate the anniversaries of the independence of nations such as Ghana, Indonesia, and Sierra Leone.

In 1955, against the State Department's advice, Powell attended the Asian–African Conference as an observer. He made a positive international impression in public addresses that balanced his concerns of his nation's race relations problems with a spirited defense of the United States as a whole against Communist criticisms. Powell returned to the United States to a warm bipartisan reception for his performance, and he was invited to meet with President Dwight Eisenhower.

With this influence, Powell suggested to the State Department that the current manner of competing with the Soviet Union in the realm of fine arts such as international symphony orchestra and ballet company tours was ineffective. Instead, he advised that the United States should focus on the popular arts, such as sponsoring international tours of famous jazz musicians, which could draw attention to an indigenous American art form and featured musicians who often performed in mixed race bands. The State Department approved the idea. The first such tour with Dizzy Gillespie proved to be an outstanding success abroad and prompted similarly popular tours featuring other musicians for years.

Committee chairmanship and legislation

In 1961, after 15 years in Congress, Powell advanced to chairman of the powerful House Education and Labor Committee. In this position, he presided over federal social programs for minimum wage and Medicaid (established later under Johnson); he expanded the minimum wage to include retail workers; and worked for equal pay for women; he supported education and training for the deaf, nursing education, and vocational training; he led legislation for standards for wages and work hours; as well as for aid for elementary and secondary education, and school libraries. Powell's committee proved extremely effective in enacting major parts of President Kennedy's "New Frontier" and President Johnson's "Great Society" social programs and the War on Poverty. It successfully reported to Congress "49 pieces of bedrock legislation", as President Johnson put it in an May 18, 1966 letter congratulating Powell on the fifth anniversary of his chairmanship.

Powell was instrumental in passing legislation that made lynching a federal crime, as well as bills that desegregated public schools. He challenged the Southern practice of charging Blacks a poll tax to vote. Poll taxes for federal elections were prohibited by the 24th Amendment, passed in 1964. Voter registration and electoral practices were not changed substantially in most of the South until after passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which provided federal oversight of voter registration and elections, and enforcement of the constitutional right to vote. In some areas where discrimination was severe, such as Mississippi, it took years for African Americans to register and vote in numbers related to their proportion in the population, but they have since maintained a high rate of registration and voting.

Political controversy

By the mid-1960s, Powell was increasingly being criticized for mismanaging his committee's budget, taking trips abroad at public expense, and missing meetings of his committee. When under scrutiny by the press and other members of Congress for personal conduct—he had taken two young women at government expense with him on overseas travel—he responded:

I wish to state very emphatically... that I will always do just what every other Congressman and committee chairman has done and is doing and will do."

Opponents led criticism in his District, where his refusal to pay a 1963 slander judgment made him subject to arrest; he also spent increasing amounts of time in Florida.

In January 1967, the House Democratic Caucus stripped Powell of his committee chairmanship. The full House refused to seat him until completion of an investigation by the Judiciary Committee. Powell urged his supporters to "keep the faith, baby," while the investigation was under way. On March 1, the House voted 307 to 116 to exclude him. Powell said, "On this day, the day of March in my opinion, is the end of the United States of America as the land of the free and the home of the brave."

Powell won the Special Election to fill the vacancy caused by his exclusion, but he did not take his seat, as he was filing a separate suit. He sued in Powell v. McCormack to retain his seat. In November 1968, Powell was re-elected. On January 3, 1969, he was seated as a member of the 91st Congress, but he was fined $25,000 and denied seniority. In June 1969, in Powell v. McCormack, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the House had acted unconstitutionally when it excluded Powell, as he had been duly elected by his constituents.

Powell's increasing absenteeism was noted by constituents, which contributed, in June 1970, to his defeat in the Democratic primary for reelection to his seat (by Charles B. Rangel). Powell failed to garner enough signatures to get on the November ballot as an Independent, and Rangel won that (and following) general elections. In the fall of 1970, Powell moved to his retreat on Bimini in the Bahamas, also resigning as minister at the Abyssinian Baptist Church.

Marriage and family

In 1933, Powell married Isabel Washington, an African-American singer and nightclub entertainer. Like Powell, she was of mixed race. She was the sister of actress Fredi Washington. Powell adopted her son Preston, from her first marriage.

After their divorce, in 1945 Powell married the singer Hazel Scott. They had a son named Adam Clayton Powell III. In the early 21st century, he became a university administrator, Vice Provost for Globalization at the University of Southern California.

Powell divorced again, and in 1960 married Yvette Flores Diago from Puerto Rico. They had a son, whom they named Adam Clayton Powell Diago, using the mother's surname according to Latino tradition. In 1980, this son changed his name to Adam Clayton Powell IV, dropping Diago, when he moved to the mainland of the United States from Puerto Rico to attend Howard University. (His half-nephew, 8 years younger, was also named Adam Clayton Powell IV.)

This youngest son of Powell, known as A.C. Powell IV, later was elected to the New York City Council in 1991 in a special election; he served for two terms. He also was elected as a New York state Assemblyman (D-East Harlem) for three terms. After he and his wife had a son, they named him Adam Clayton Powell V. In the 2010 Democratic primary election, A. C. Powell IV unsuccessfully challenged the incumbent Charles B. Rangel for the Democratic candidacy in his father's former Congressional District.

Family scandal

In 1967, a U.S. Congressional committee subpoenaed Yvette Diago, the former third wife of Powell Jr. and the mother of Adam Clayton Powell IV. They were investigating potential "theft of state funds" related to her having been on Powell Jr.'s payroll but doing no work. Yvette Diago admitted to the committee that she had been on the Congressional payroll of her former husband, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., from 1961 until 1967, although she had moved back to Puerto Rico in 1961. As reported by Time Magazine, Yvette Diago had continued living in Puerto Rico and "performed no work at all," yet was kept on the payroll. Her salary was increased to $20,578 and she was paid until January 1967, when she was exposed and fired.

Death

In April 1972, Powell became gravely ill and was flown to a Miami hospital from his home in Bimini. He died there on April 4, 1972, at the age of 63, from acute prostatitis, according to contemporary newspaper accounts. After his funeral at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, his son Adam III poured his ashes from a plane over the waters of Bimini.

Legacy

Seventh Avenue north of Central Park through Harlem has been renamed as Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard. One of the landmarks along this street is the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building, named for Powell in 1983.

In addition, two New York schools were named after him, PS 153, at 1750 Amsterdam Ave., and a middle school, IS 172 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. School of Social Justice, at 509 W. 129th St. It closed in 2009. In 2011, the new Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Paideia Academy opened in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood.

Representation in other media

Powell was the subject of the 2002 cable television film Keep the Faith, Baby, starring Harry Lennix as Powell and Vanessa L. Williams as his second wife, jazz pianist Hazel Scott. The film debuted on February 17, 2002, on premium cable network Showtime. It garnered three NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Television Movie, Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie (Lennix), and Outstanding Actress in a TV Movie (Williams). It won two National Association of Minorities in Cable (NAMIC) Vision Awards for Best Drama and Best Actor in a Television Film (Lennix), the International Press Association's Best Actress in a Television Film Award (Williams), and Reel.com's Best Actor in a Television Film (Lennix). The film's producers were Geoffrey L. Garfield, Powell IV's long-time campaign manager; Monty Ross, a confidant of Spike Lee; Adam Clayton Powell III; and Hollywood veteran Harry J. Ufland. From some of its darkest hours, the United States has emerged stronger and more resilient.

Between May and July 1862, even as Confederate victories in Virginia raised doubts about the future of the Union, Congress and President Abraham Lincoln kept their eyes on the horizon, enacting three landmark laws that shaped the nation’s next chapter: The Homestead Act allowed Western settlers to claim 160 acres of public land apiece; the Morrill Act provided land grants for states to fund universities; and the Pacific Railway Act underwrote the transcontinental railroad.

Nearly 75 years later, in the depths of the Great Depression, with jobs in short supply and many Americans reduced to waiting in bread lines, President Franklin Roosevelt proved similarly farsighted. He concluded the best way to revive and sustain prosperity was not merely to pump money into the economy but to rewrite the rules of the marketplace. “Liberty,” Roosevelt said at the Democratic Party’s convention in 1936, “requires opportunity to make a living — a living decent according to the standard of the time, a living which gives man not only enough to live by, but something to live for.” His administration, working with Congress, enshrined the right of workers to bargain collectively, imposed strict rules and regulators on the financial industry, and created Social Security to provide pensions for the elderly and disabled.

The coronavirus pandemic has laid bare once again the incomplete nature of the American project — the great distance between the realities of life and death in the United States and the values enunciated in its founding documents.

Over the past half century, the fabric of American democracy has been stretched thin. The nation has countenanced debilitating decay in its public institutions and a concentration of economic power not seen since the 1920s. While many Americans live without financial security or opportunity, a relative handful of families holds much of the nation’s wealth. Over the past decade, the wealth of the top 1 percent of households has surpassed the combined wealth of the bottom 80 percent.

The present crisis has revealed the United States as a nation in which professional basketball players could be rapidly tested for the coronavirus but health care workers were turned away; in which the affluent could retreat to the safety of second homes, relying on workers who can’t take paid sick leave to deliver food; in which children in lower-income households struggle to connect to the digital classrooms where their school lessons are now supposed to be delivered.

It is a nation in which local officials issuing stay-at-home orders must reckon with the cruel irony that hundreds of thousands of Americans do not have homes. Lacking private places, they must sleep in public spaces. Las Vegas painted rectangles on an asphalt parking lot to remind homeless residents to sleep six feet apart — an act that might as well have been a grim piece of performance art titled “The Least We Can Do.”

It is a nation in which enduring racial inequalities, in wealth and in health, are reflected in the pandemic’s death toll. In Michigan, where the coronavirus hit early and hard, African-Americans make up just 14 percent of the state’s population but 40 percent of the dead. Jason Hargrove, who kept driving a Detroit city bus as the virus spread, posted a Facebook video on March 21 complaining about a female passenger who coughed without covering her mouth. He said he had to keep working, to care for his family. In the video, he told his wife he’d take off his clothes in the front hall when he got home and get right in the shower, so that she stayed safe. Less than two weeks later, he was dead.

The federal government is providing temporary aid to less fortunate Americans, and few have objected to those emergency measures. But already some politicians are asserting that the extraordinary nature of the crisis does not warrant permanent changes in the social contract.

This misapprehends both the nature of crises in general and the particulars of the present emergency. The magnitude of a crisis is determined not just by the impact of the precipitating events but also by the fragility of the system it attacks. Our society was especially vulnerable to this pandemic because so many Americans lack the essential liberty to protect their own lives and the lives of their families.

This nation was ailing long before the coronavirus reached its shores.

Agreat divide separates affluent Americans, who fully enjoy the benefits of life in the wealthiest nation on earth, from the growing portion of the population whose lives lack stability or any real prospect of betterment.

The hedge-fund billionaire Kenneth Griffin paid $238 million last year for a New York apartment overlooking Central Park. He plans to stay there when he happens to be in town. Meanwhile, 10.9 million American families barely can afford an apartment. They spend more than half of their incomes on rent, and so they scrimp on food and health care. And on any given night, half a million Americans are homeless.

For those at the bottom, moreover, the chances of rising are in decline. By the time they reached 30, more than 90 percent of Americans born in 1940 were earning more than their parents had earned at the same age. But among those born in 1980, only half were earning more than their parents by the age of 30.

The erosion of the American dream is not a result of laziness or a talent drought. Rather, opportunity has slipped away. The economic ladder is harder to climb; real incomes have stagnated for decades even as the costs of housing, education and health care have increased. Many lower-income Americans are born into polluted, impoverished neighborhoods, with no decent jobs to be found.

“By 40, my parents owned a house, had a kid — me — and were both doing well in their careers,” said Melanie Martin-Leff, who works in marketing in Philadelphia. “I’m freelancing, renting, partnerless and childless.”

The inequalities of wealth have become inequalities of health. A middle-aged American in the top fifth of the income distribution can expect to live about 13 years longer than a person of the same age in the bottom fifth — an advantage that has more than doubled since 1980.

These changes have become harder to reverse because the distribution of political power also is increasingly unequal. Our system of democracy is under strain as those with wealth increasingly shape the course of policymaking, acting from self-interest and perhaps also because it has become harder to imagine life on the other side of the divide or to design policy in the common interest.

The wealthy are particularly successful in blocking changes they don’t like. The political scientists Martin Gilens of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Benjamin Page of Northwestern have calculated that between 1981 and 2002, policies supported by at least 80 percent of affluent voters passed into law about 45 percent of the time, while policies opposed by at least 80 percent of those voters passed into law just 18 percent of the time. Importantly, the views of poor and middle-class voters had little influence.

The fragility of our society and government is the product of deliberate decisions. The modern welfare state was constructed in three great waves:

In the Progressive legislation of the early 20th century...

…in Roosevelt’s New Deal…

... and in President Johnson’s Great Society, which created programs including Medicare, Medicaid and Head Start.

These policies embodied a broad and muscular conception of liberty: that government should provide all Americans with the freedom that comes from a stable and prosperous life.

“We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence,” Roosevelt told the nation in 1944.

The goal, of course, was never realized in full, but since the late 1960s, the federal government has largely abandoned the attempt. The defining trend in American public policy has been to diminish government’s role as a guarantor of personal liberty.

Advocates of a minimalist conception of government claim they too are defenders of liberty. But theirs is a narrow and negative definition of freedom: the freedom from civic duty, from mutual obligation, from taxation. This impoverished view of freedom has in practice protected wealth and privilege. It has perpetuated the nation’s defining racial inequalities and kept the poor trapped in poverty, and their children, and their children’s children.

One of the most important aspects of this retreat was the government’s role in constructing a new residential landscape of economically and racially segregated communities. The government built highways that carried white families to new suburban neighborhoods where minorities often were not allowed to live; it provided mortgage loans that minorities were not allowed to obtain; and even after explicit discrimination was declared illegal, single-family zoning laws continued to exclude low-income families, particularly minorities.

Policymakers tied funding for public services to the prosperity of the new communities, and the Supreme Court blessed the practice in a 1973 ruling, San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez, that allowed differences in school funding based on differences in local property values. The effect was to substitute economic segregation for explicitly racial segregation.

The government similarly enabled growing divisions in the workplace. As the economy shifted from manufacturing to services, corporations — with the help of Congress and local lawmakers — successfully resisted the unionization of new jobs. And the government declined to replace organized labor as the protector of workers in burgeoning sectors like retail and health care.

Companies were not required to provide employees with basic benefits like paid leave, and they were given free rein to claim that many of their full-time workers were actually contractors. The purchasing power of the federal minimum wage has been falling since 1968.

A shift in corporate behavior also harmed workers. Many business leaders rallied around a narrow conception of corporate responsibility, arguing the sole obligation of a corporation was to maximize shareholder returns. Policymakers backed the shift, notably by writing that narrow definition into the laws of Delaware, where many large companies maintain official homes.

The results are clear enough: Executive pay has skyrocketed, and shareholders have enjoyed rising stock prices, at least until recently, while most workers are falling behind. If individual income had kept pace with overall economic growth since 1970, Americans in the bottom 90 percent of the income distribution would be making an extra $12,000 per year, on average. In effect, the extreme increase in inequality means every worker in the bottom 90 percent of the income distribution is sending an annual check for $12,000 to a worker in the top 10 percent.

The idealization of individual action in an open marketplace has had its mirror image in the denigration of collective action through government.

The United States does not guarantee the availability of affordable housing to its citizens, as do most developed nations. It does not guarantee reliable access to health care, as does virtually every other developed nation. The cost of a college education in the United States is among the highest in the developed world. And beyond the threadbare nature of the American safety net, the government has pulled back from investment in infrastructure, education and basic scientific research, the building blocks of future prosperity. It is not surprising many Americans have lost confidence in the government as a vehicle for achieving the things that we cannot achieve alone.

The nation’s hierarchies are starkly visible during periods of crisis. The coronavirus pandemic has necessitated extraordinary sacrifices, but the distribution is profoundly unequal.

The wealthy and famous and politically powerful have laid first claim to the available lifeboats: Senators Richard Burr of North Carolina and Kelly Loeffler of Georgia secured their own fortunes by selling off stock holdings as the virus spread in January and February, even as they reassured the nation that everything was going to be OK; the billionaire David Geffen posted on Instagram that he planned to ride out the crisis on his 454-foot yacht, Rising Sun, adding, “I’m hoping everybody is staying safe”; large corporations lobbied successfully against a proposal to provide paid sick leave to every American worker, pleading they couldn’t afford the cost.

Less affluent Americans will bear the brunt in health and wealth. Already they suffer disproportionately from the diseases of labor like black lung and mesothelioma; the diseases of poverty like obesity and diabetes; and the opioid epidemic that has raged in the communities where opportunity is in short supply. By one estimate, these patterns of poor health mean those at the bottom of the income spectrum are twice as likely to die from Covid-19. Many are losing their jobs; those still working generally cannot do so from the safety of the living room couch. They risk death to obtain the necessities of life.

Children, relatively safe from the coronavirus itself, are in particular danger from the economic fallout. Public schools are one of the great equalizing forces in American life; the shift to online learning means existing inequalities matter more. Millions of children lack reliable internet access. The principal of a high school in Phoenix found three students huddled under a blanket outside the building on a rainy day, using the school’s wireless network to complete their required schoolwork because they could not log in from their homes.

And research shows the impact of economic traumas in childhood are long-lasting. The children of parents who lose work, for example, end up earning less over their own lifetimes.

The crisis has also exposed the federal government’s lack of resources, competence and ambition. The government failed to contain the virus through a program of testing and targeted quarantines; it is struggling to provide states with the medical equipment necessary to help those who fall ill; and instead of moving more aggressively to contain the economic damage, the federal government has allowed companies to lay off millions of workers. The unemployment rate in the United States has most likely already reached the highest level since the Great Depression.

A major reason for the faltering response is a chimerical expectation that markets will perform the work of government. The White House has for the most part refused to mandate or coordinate production of critical medical supplies. Indeed, the federal government has bid against states for available supplies and encouraged states to bid against one another. It is an embrace of markets so extreme it might seem farcical if it wasn’t resulting in unnecessary deaths.

Corporate action and philanthropy certainly have their places, particularly in the short term, given President Trump’s feckless leadership and the tattered condition of the government he heads. But they are poor substitutes for effective stewardship by public institutions. What America needs is a just and activist government. The nature of democracy is that we are together responsible for saving ourselves.

Americans need to recover the optimism that has so often lighted the path forward.

The crucible of a crisis provides the opportunity to forge a better society, but the crisis itself does not do the work. Crises expose problems, but they do not supply alternatives, let alone political will. Change requires ideas and leadership. Nations often pass through the same kinds of crises repeatedly, either unable to imagine a different path or unwilling to walk it.

The worst crises often occur under weak leadership; that is a big part of how an initial problem spirals out of control. Americans had every reason to despair of President James Buchanan’s ability to lead the nation through a civil war, or of President Herbert Hoover’s ability to lead the nation out of the Great Depression. Now, as then, the country is burdened with weak leadership — and it has a chance to replace that leadership, as it did in 1860 and 1932.

There is also a need for new ideas, and the revival of older ideas, about what the government owes the nation’s citizens, what corporations owe employees and what we owe one another.

The multi-trillion-dollar scale of the government’s response to the crisis, for all its flaws and inadequacies, offers a powerful reminder that there is no replacement for an activist state. The political scientist Francis Fukuyama has observed that the nations best weathering the coronavirus pandemic are those like Singapore and Germany, where there is broad trust in government — and where the state merits that confidence. A critical part of America’s post-crisis rebuilding project is to restore the effectiveness of the government and to rebuild public confidence in it.

A major investment in public health would be a fitting place to start.

The larger project, however, is to increase the resilience of American society. Generations of federal policymakers have prioritized the pursuit of economic growth with scant regard for stability or distribution. This moment demands a restoration of the national commitment to a richer conception of freedom: economic security and equality of opportunity. That’s why Times Opinion is publishing this project across the next two months, to envision how to turn the America we have into the America we need.

The purpose of the federal government, Lincoln wrote to Congress on July 4, 1861, was “to elevate the condition of men, to lift artificial burdens from all shoulders, and to give everyone an unfettered start and a fair chance in the race of life.” The Homestead Act in particular was a concrete step in that direction: 10 percent of all the land in the United States was ultimately distributed in 160-acre chunks. But Lincoln’s conception of “everyone” did not include everyone: The Homestead Act rested on the expropriation of Native American lands.

Roosevelt shared Lincoln’s vision of government, but industry had replaced agriculture as the wellspring of prosperity, so he focused on ensuring a more equitable distribution of the nation’s manufacturing output — although African-Americans were treated as second-class citizens in many New Deal programs.

The United States today is in need of new measures to stake all Americans in the modern economy.

To give Americans a fair chance in the race of life, the government must begin from birth. The United States must reclaim the core truth of the Supreme Court’s seminal decision in Brown v. Board of Education: So long as Americans are segregated, their opportunities can never be equal. One of the most important steps the United States can take to ensure all children have the opportunity to thrive is to bulldoze enduring patterns of racial and economic segregation. Zoning laws that limit residential development in the very areas where good jobs are most abundant are one of the most important structural obstacles to a more integrated nation.

Over the course of this project, we will examine other ways to equalize opportunity early in life, and also to restore a healthier balance of power between employers and workers.

One of the clearest lessons of the pandemic is that many employers feel shockingly little obligation to protect the health and welfare of their workers, and workers have been left with little means to organize or resist. Amazon, one of the nation’s largest employers, fired a worker protesting safety conditions at the company’s warehouses on the Orwellian grounds that his protest was itself a safety hazard. A manager at a Uline call center instructed employees not to tell colleagues if they weren’t feeling well because it might cause “unnecessary panic.”

And the nation’s tattered social safety net is in desperate need of reinforcement. Americans need reliable access to health care. Americans need affordable options for child care and for the care of older members of their families, a growing crisis in an aging nation. No one, and especially not children, should ever go hungry. Everyone deserves a place to call home.

Just a little more than a decade ago, Americans lived through a very different kind of crisis — a financial collapse — that exposed similar fragilities in American society. The government’s response was inadequate. The recovery was still underway when the coronavirus arrived, and partly because recovery had come so slowly, America’s political leaders had failed to take advantage of the intervening years to prepare for the inevitability of fresh tests.

The nation cannot afford a repeat performance, particularly as other challenges to our society already loom, most of all the imperative to slow global warming.

The United States has a chance to emerge from this latest crisis as a stronger nation, more just, more free and more resilient. We must seize the opportunity.

GOP Pennsylvania lawmaker yells over Dem reading letter from former homeless man in viral video

Pennsylvania's state Senate erupted this week during debate over a bill that ended funding for the some of the poorest residents, leading a Republican lawmaker to shout over his Democratic colleague for nearly three minutes.

Republicans have pushed to end the General Assistance program but Democrats on Wednesday introduced amendments to save the monthly funding for certain populations, such as domestic violence victims, people with disabilities or veterans, Penn Live reported.

Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman (R) made a motion to cut off the debate and called for a vote.

Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who was presiding over the chamber, temporarily left the platform to speak with angry lawmakers. Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R), who leads the chamber when the lieutenant  governor is absent, seized the opportunity to grab the gavel and asked for a vote on Corman's motion. 

Democrats walked off the floor and when they returned, Fetterman acknowledged freshman state Sen. Katie Muth (D) instead of starting the vote. Muth began reading a letter from John Boyd, a formerly homeless man from Philadelphia who said the state's program was a "second chance at life."

The outlet noted that under the state Senate's rules, the proper procedure should have been to hold a vote on Corman's motion. 

Corman began shouting at Fetterman to "do your job," accusing the lieutenant governor of ignoring the Senate rules on debate.

"Bring the chamber to order, Mr. President. It's not a partisan job. You need to follow the rules. You need to follow the rules, Mr. President," he yelled.

Muth, unfazed, continued to read from Boyd's letter which described how the $200 he received each month helped him see his therapist and afford simple necessities like bus fare and toothpaste.

"The chair continues to acknowledge Senator Muth," Fetterman said as Corman's shouting continued.

The Democrat eventually finished reading Boyd's statement and stepped away from the microphone.

Video of the exchange circulated on Twitter this week, racking up more than 242,000 views as of Friday.

The yelling made Corman's voice hoarse at a Republican press conference when he continued to attack Fetterman, the outlet noted.

"When you are orchestrating that with the other party, that's what you are becoming. You are becoming a partisan hack," Corman said.

The Senate Republican leaders later issued a statement denouncing Democrats for the chaotic debate. 

"When our rules are not followed, chaos takes over," the Senate GOP said in its statement. "It was a sad day for good government in Pennsylvania and the actions of our colleagues on the other side of the aisle set a dangerous precedent for the future of an institution that we value so greatly. When we disagree with one another we must do so in a respectful manner."

The yelling made Corman's voice hoarse at a Republican press conference when he continued to attack Fetterman, the outlet noted.

Corman's communications director, Jennifer Kocher, elaborated on the rules issue in a statement to The Hill.

"The Senate rules that all Senators agreed to were that Senator Corman had the floor at that time," Kocher said. "Senator Corman was attempting to get Lt. Governor John Fetterman to listen to him and respect the rules of the institution so that normal debate could occur. The actions taken to ignore the rules of debate sets a dangerous precedent for the future of respectful discourse."

The bill eliminated the cash assistance program as of Aug. 1, the outlet noted, and was projected to cost $54 million in cash payments to nearly 10,000 individuals who don't qualify for or are awaiting approval for other assistance.

The Pennsylvania Senate ultimately approved the measure by a 25-24 vote, with two Republicans siding with Democrats.

Gov. Tom Wolf (D) signed the $34 billion budget on Friday. He noted in a statement to Penn Live that even though the GOP-led legislature eliminated the general assistance program, there was an additional $15 million included for low-income housing assistance.

"This will help a lot of the same individuals who previously received general assistance from the commonwealth. It will provide valuable resources to make sure they have a roof over their head. But there is more we can and should do to lift people out of poverty," Wolf said in a statement. 

Wolf's communication director J.J. Abbott told The Hill that the governor decided to sign the measure so that Philadelphia, already facing the closure of one hospital, would not risk "one of the city's hospitals' financial lifelines."

"Republicans, who control both chambers, made their determination to eliminate this program clear, despite Governor Wolf's opposition," Abbott told The Hill." "In the end, Governor Wolf was able to secure additional funding for low-income housing that can help many of the same individuals. Governor Wolf would be eager to reinstate the program if the legislature became amenable to doing so."

Muth tweeted after the vote and said she "won't back down to bullies or those who try and harm others."

"Shame on those elected officials who voted to strip away these vital resources! #Shame #MoralBudget," she wrote.

A Night in Scranton

We all take jobs that lead us far off our intended career path.  Mine started in the summer of 1973 as a newly minted Greyhound bus driver, trying to make extra money while teaching school in Buffalo, New York.  I answered their help wanted ad in the Buffalo Evening News out of curiosity and as more of a joke than anything else. What does an elementary school teacher have to offer a bus company known for a dog as its trademark?  They explained at the interview that teachers made the perfect fill-ins during their heavy travel times. We appeared clean cut and were polite with the traveling public. I bought their pitch and signed up for a new driver school that started in March.  I was all of 24 and eager to make extra money to supplement my abysmal teacher’s pay. My wife and two infant daughters were my main concern in this venture into transportation.

In 1973 the highway buses all shifted with manual transmissions.  This seemed like a piece of cake for me since I drove a VW Beetle with a four speed.  I was soon in for a surprise. The industrial transmissions used in buses required a technique known as a double clutching between gears.  The entire month of March was devoted to our mastery of the elusive art of timing our gear shift movement to the speed of the engine and that of the bus. Each shift required two presses of the clutch, not one as in a car.  It was a mechanical ballet that needed perfect timing in order to avoid the ugly and annoying sound of grinding gears and a lugging diesel engine. The clutch was also industrial and needed a lot more effort than my little VW.  I went directly from Greyhound class to soaking my left knee in a hot bath at home.

By April, they’d culled out several of the teachers for their inability to master the art of the double clutch transmission.  I felt fortunate to still be in the running. We were now onto the many other issues involved in driving a forty foot long highway bus. Tight roadways and heavy traffic are not your friend.  Weather is always in the back of your mind. A bus will hydroplane in a heavy downpour. The wind can force you into another lane of traffic. Snow and ice are the food of legendary driver room stories.  Slowly, I was becoming a bus driver, sans the rough edges of a Ralph Kramden. I was to be the Greyhound model of the trade.

This all led up to my night in Scranton.  The regular driver on the run from Buffalo to Scranton was Ron Perry.  He was in his early thirties and sported a modified Elvis haircut very much out of date by the seventies.  He’d been assigned to train me on this difficult run and he instructed me to sit in the first passenger seat on the right, take out my route schedule, and keep notes.  

As we broke the state line into Pennsylvania, the road narrowed and the shoulder rose up on one side.  “Deer will leap off those banks at night,“ Ron remarked, “My buddy had one come through the windshield and kill the lady sitting where you are.”  Perhaps the extra money no longer sounded so enticing. This was a real driver speaking without the Greyhound PR department providing the script. I knew from teaching that nothing equals the wisdom in the trenches. What was I in for?

We rolled into Scranton around five and turned the bus over to a Philadelphia driver for the remainder of the run.  Ron walked me through his log book entries and took a brief peek at my notes. “Hopefully you won’t see much of this run,” he said, which didn’t sound very encouraging.  “Wait till you see the Jeremy Hotel, only the best for Greyhound!” As we walked from the bus depot into downtown Scranton, I suddenly became aware of the old coal town’s state of decay.  Soot ran in streaks off window sills. The brownstone and brick buildings were blackened like fire ruins. The sidewalks were devoid of activity and many of the local shops were already closed.  “This is the only diner open. I like their fried baloney plate for three bucks.” Mr. Perry was not a man of complicated culinary needs. We went inside and sat at the counter as the heavy scent of the fryer filled my nostrils.  “Two coffees and a menu for the new guy.” The waitress pointed to the board above the short order window. “It’s all there, hun, and if you don’t see it, just ask.”

Lo and behold, there it was. Charbroiled liver and onions with the side note “new.”  Charbroiled was new in the seventies and I couldn’t imagine what it could do to rescue liver and onions from the bottom of my list of edible disasters. Knowing that Ron would soon have that baloney plate special in front of him, I didn’t want to be outdone in the search for politically incorrect food.  Liver is high in cholesterol and acts as a filter for an animals toxins. If the road didn’t kill me, the food sure would. “I think I’ll try your liver and onions tonight,“ I said. The waitress jotted down our orders on her pad and hung a copy on a little stainless steel wheel for the cook to view. Ron smirked and remarked that he was glad we had separate rooms.  

I actually enjoyed the charbroiled liver and onions and finished my entire plate before Ron got through with his fried baloney.  We both ate for less than our Greyhound dinner allowance of five dollars and off we went to the Jeremy Hotel across the street from the diner.  The Jeremy had once been the grand residence of downtown Scranton in the days of coal. Hard times and hard traffic had left a worn track in the once plush carpet from the entrance to the clerk’s desk at the rear of the lobby.  “Hey Ron, another new driver tonight?” the clerk asked. He obviously knew his regulars and my uniform left little to ask about my profession. “Did Ron tell you about our TV policy?” I’d never heard of a TV policy and shook my head.  “They’re portables you carry up to your room. The black and whites are two dollars a night and the color ones are three dollars. Greyhound has your room charge but you need to cover your TV out of pocket.” Ron handed the clerk his two bucks and grabbed a small black and white portable from a closet behind the clerk’s desk.  “I’m beat, forget the TV. I’m hitting the hay,” I said. Then the clerk said the oddest thing. “Radio is free. It hangs on the wall above your bed and has five local stations. Oh, did Ron tell you about your bathroom?” This was getting really strange. “You share it with your neighbor. You lock him out when you enter and unlock him when you exit.  Please don’t forget this, especially in the middle of the night.” A shared bathroom? A radio with five stations that hung on a wall? What year was this? Was I still in America?

Ron hit the stairs with more wonderful words of advice.  “Use the stairs, you’ll wait forever for that old elevator, sometimes it sticks between floors.  We need to meet down here in the lobby at five AM. Don’t be late.” My training experience had just hit a new low.  What if they stuck me in this shithole all summer? I didn’t think this old fire trap even had AC. I was writing my resignation letter in my mind as I climbed the worn wooden staircase that led to my second floor room.  I was holding a large skeleton key. I’d only seen this type of key in old movies and at my grandmother’s house years ago. The hallway leading to my room smelled of years of stale cigarette smoke and spilled booze. Did anyone pay good money to stay here?  Greyhound corporate needed to hold its Christmas party here.

I entered my room like a thief, cautious yet curious at the same time.  It was clean but dark in all aspects. The walls had been painted a dark green and the furniture was made of dark wood, an old design from before the war.  The head of the bed was pushed against the far wall and there was a strange art deco metal box the size of a toaster one foot above the headboard. What in the dickens was this contraption?  I moved closer and could plainly make out a small speaker in the center and two knobs on each side near the bottom. One knob had a pointer attached and was labeled with the letters A-E. The other was circular with “volume” written in small print above the knob.  So this must be the free radio? My God, I was born in 1948 and I’d never come across such a strange device. I carefully turned the volume knob and sure enough there rose that distinctive low fidelity sound of an AM station. I flipped the selector knob through the remaining alphabet.  Each letter brought another station with two of them smothered in static. I knew from an earlier job in broadcasting that these were most likely not local stations. What an odd device, and it still worked. I’d bet most guests had dismissed this little box as a joke left over from the glory days of booming downtown Scranton in the 40s and a hotel so broke it couldn’t afford to remove useless junk from the walls.  

At that moment, I could hardly wait to see the shared bathroom I’d been warned about.  I knocked lightly on the dark wooden door and twisted the old glass knob, and, there it was, a bathroom right out of the Great Gatsby era.  Small white hexagonal ceramic tiles on the floor and shiny square white tiles on the side walls. Halfway up they ended in a black ceramic border that ran the perimeter of the room.  On one side was a massive claw hammer tub and exposed brass fixtures with white ceramic handles labeled hot and cold. A chain with a rubber stopper hung from the overflow drain. A strange oval shower curtain hung from the ceiling.  Opposite the tub was a pedestal sink flawed with eggshell like age cracks and again sporting two large brass faucets with white ceramic handles. A small hotel soap labeled “The Jeremy” was neatly placed on one side. The purchasing agent must be in a time warp or have a strange sense of humor.  Would anyone want to be found with that bar of soap in their travel bag? The toilet sat next to the sink and was a good six inches higher than my new one at home. It sported a black wooden toilet seat of the horse collar style. The brass attachments had long ago turned green from missed aims. I locked the guest door at the far end and drew a bath.  I didn’t trust the shower and I felt like a good soak was a better choice.

I’d done plenty of shifting and my left knee ached.  I sat down in the oversized tub and laid my head back on a rolled towel.  I felt like I was 24 going on 60. My doubts surrounded me like the bath water.  How did one make a career out of this type of work? Why spend three nights a week away from your family in a run down shithole in the middle of nowhere?  Whatever good thoughts I had of a Greyhound career died that night in Scranton. I heard a knock on the guest door and shouted that I needed five minutes to clear out.  

Back in my room, I stared at my bed and the small grey box above the headboard.  Let’s see what this living antique has to offer, I thought.  I switched through two stations and heard a familiar voice from my youth.  It was Rod Serling introducing a radio play on the Zero Hour. I’d loved him when I was younger and decided that this was what I’d settle on.  The play was about the Bermuda Triangle and the possible reason for its mysterious goings on. I laid there and listened, and I found myself enjoying it.  I could visualize every detail in vivid color. Radio was perfect for storytelling, and I felt fortunate that I’d foregone the television and saved three dollars in addition.  The play ended with the explanation that the Triangle was a space port for aliens. Rod signed off in his distinctive deep voice and I went to sleep early.

Years passed and I left both Greyhound and teaching behind for a far more lucrative career in sales.  I traveled to many parts of the world, always eating at fine restaurants and staying at five star hotels with all the amenities.  Of those experiences, I can’t recount one as fondly as I can that night in Scranton in 1973.
